community supporters
The culture of Kennett is active and diverse. Kennett Trails Alliance works tirelessly to produce a legacy of connecting nature to community for both current and future generations. The 30th annual mushroom festival starting on September 11 will draw more than 100,000 people to celebrate and embrace “The Mushroom Capital of The World.” On October 10, more than 100 local, regional, and national craft breweries will gather at 600 South Broad Street for Brewfest—creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and cheer.
Thank you to our Community Supporters: The Whip Tavern, Loch Nairn Golf Club, Trail Creek Outfitters, Mattock School of Music, Crozer Keystone, The Gables at Chadds Ford, Garden Spot Village, Hockessin Chiropractic Centre, Studio 882, Plein Air, Sycamore Properties, LLC, and PA Leadership Charter School. See them starting on page 40.
thank you to our partners Thank you to Historic Kennett Square and Longwood Gardens. With their generous support, we are pleased to present this issue of Fig® Kennett.
The historic district abounds with galleries and artist’s studios. Retail window displays are pieces of art themselves—showing the pride and personality of each shop. The town hums with the sounds of its own renowned 75-year-old symphony. The downtown is rooted in the traditional values of community coupled with class and sophistication, with a backdrop of astounding naturally beautiful landscapes. Kennett Square calls the creative spirit to settle, to stay, and to make.
I have heard Kennett Square called the apex of small-town Americana. The Kennett Square I know and love is a town with nationwide festivals, famous artists, and the largest heart. Please enjoy the Fig® Kennett Arts & Culture issue and make Kennett Square a canvas for your inspiration and memories. With appreciation and admiration, allison snavely-villano Meet the entire creative & talented team who makes Fig® possible at figkennett.com.

Joe Scalise & family at Anson B. Nixon Park
giving back: joe scalise is a familiar face to many. As a homegrown product of
a tight-knit community, he understands what’s important when it comes to maintaining and preserving Kennett Square —and after being a borough employee for nearly two decades, there’s no one more qualified to act on the public’s behalf when it comes to values and priorities. As the new Borough Manager, Joe’s responsibilities include keeping an eye on the budget, making difficult financial decisions, and helping to manage the borough staff. Currently, he’s working on a strategic planning process with council, the mayor, and all the department heads.
J O E S C AL I S E “I’m tasked with making sure we follow through on those plans. We just did another 5-year plan that guides us through 2020 and I’m responsible for the plan that we’ve laid out cooperatively,” he says. Joe says he’s working on an economic development study in collaboration with Historic Kennett Square, Kennett Township, and Longwood to view seven areas in and around the borough and Kennett. “We want to enhance it and not build something that’s going to detract from our very vibrant downtown district and make sure it won’t compete and cause any kind of issues in the borough or surrounding areas,” he cautions.
Responsible growth is paramount to making Kennett Square more dynamic. People want to live and work in Kennett. The school systems, the walkability, the community events and festivals, and the proximity to places like West Chester, Route 1, and Wilmington make it a desirable location for businesses and individuals. “Kennett Square is starting to be looked at as a community center. We’re proud of that,” he says. Joe enjoys being with his family, dining locally, and investing his time and talents (he’s a wonderful grant writer!) in the place he calls home. Learn more about Joe at kennettsquare.org.

PICKS All this beer in Kennett Square got me thinking (read: drinking) one night and “Eureeeka,” I exclaimed!
2. Cover the dough and allow it to rise at room temperature for an hour or for up to 2 hours.
Beer + Mushrooms + Cheese = Kennett Square
3. Preheat the oven to 450°F with a pizza stone
So, chefs and non-chefs, foodies and non-foodies, cheese nerds, beer nuts, and locavores—this one is for you. My all-time, tried and true favorite:
pizza dough with beer 2 ½ cups King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour 1 ½ cups semolina
(if you’re using one) on the lower rack.
4. Divide the dough in half. Shape each half into a 10" to 12" round.
5. Place the dough on a lightly greased or parchment-lined baking sheet. For thin to medium crust, bake the pizzas immediately. For thicker crust, let them rise for 30 minutes. 6. Transfer the pizzas, parchment and all, to the pizza stone. Or place the baking sheets in the oven.
2 teaspoons instant yeast 1 teaspoon baking powder
7. Bake for 5 minutes. Remove from the oven, top generously (see suggestions below), and bake for an additional 10 –15 minutes, until the bottom crust is crisp and the cheese is bubbly and lightly browned. Watch your cooking time and keep the cheese gooey.
1 ½ teaspoons salt 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 ½ cups local beer (room temperature) Your beer needs to be delicious and room temperature—don’t forget!
8. Remove from the oven and serve hot.
(Makes 2 pizzas.)
1. Mix and knead together all of the dough
try these toppings: sliced fresh, local
ingredients—by hand, mixer, or bread machine— until you’ve made a smooth, soft dough. Yes, you can mix the ingredients simply and all together. That’s the beauty of this recipe and the beer.
mushrooms sautéed in butter and a splash of beer • ricotta, mozzarella, burratta • crumbled cabot cheddar, taleggio • grated Doe Run Creamery “Bathed in Victory” • Shellbark sharp goat cheese • truffle salt & honey • farm-fresh cracked egg

Neilson Carlin, owner of Studio Rilievo
authentic:
NEILSON CARLIN
as a child, Neilson Carlin wanted to be a comic book artist. Or a priest. He loved art and at a young age had what he calls a profoundly moving, mystical experience during a Catholic mass. Raised in a Christian household, he had respect for the divine, but little did he know that decades later he would have a conversion that would lead to fulfillment, of sorts, in both those childhood dreams. His conversion to Catholicism almost 15 years ago, which was encouraged by his wife, led him to his first commissioned piece for the Church: adorning the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Wisconsin. That piece led to more, and at his most 10 figkennett.com
visible, Neilson’s art will be on display at the upcoming World Meeting of Families. Most of his paintings are of saints and some Biblical narratives. He uses bold reds for evocation and yellows for divinity of a symbolic voice. “What entices me about doing work for the Church is the deep theology and symbolism involved, and the challenge of bringing spiritual concepts to life through material means,” he says. And collaborations with priests, dioceses, and parishes help enrich the dignity of the work, guiding viewers toward the divine. Aside from a 10-year gallery career as a fine artist, Neilson also owns and
teaches students at Studio Rilievo School of Painting. “The most important thing to teach a student? Patience,” he says emphatically. A hero is idolized for courage, achievement, or extraordinary characteristics. “I wanted to do stories of heroic people in costume. I just didn’t realize it wasn’t Spiderman I wanted to paint—it was true heroes like Saint Maximilian Kolbe (Neilson’s favorite saint),” he says with a smile. What has been will be again, and what has been done will be done again—for now, Neilson’s content to guide others toward finding their authentic self through visual narratives. good things come to those who wait—and work hard. The Kennett
Brewing Company is now open and serving patrons original interpretations of new and classic styles of beer. The Americanstyle brewpub has an original and alluring speakeasy feel. The décor is complete with communal tables handmade with pinewood and walnut inlays for entertaining and friendly conversations with people from all walks of life. Owners Mark and Jossy Osborne have been brewing for more than a decade. What started as a home brewing experiment turned into an obsession for making great
beer—or, as they say, journeying on a flavor odyssey. “Beer is a living thing and it will never come out exactly the same twice. I take copious notes on every aspect: ingredients, pH, water composition, temperatures, time,” Mark says. “He’s very meticulous—always experimenting with new beer types and new styles,” Jossy adds. And he’s not alone. Chef Mike Hall shares Mark’s single-minded attention to detail and quality. Well-respected by both his peers and patrons, Chef Mike is an extraordinary talent in the kitchen. He’s created a delicious menu, pairing and using beer in many of the foods. He’s also
added inspired farm-to-table specials and continues to appropriate the theme and feel with options like the Pulled Pork Mac and Cheese, a Braised Short Rib Sandwich, and the Candied Beer Pork Belly. “The town has been wonderful,” Mark says, giving credit to Andy Crawford, his realtor, Holly Peters, his landlord, and Mary Hutchins who worked tirelessly to help them. “It really has been a community effort,” Jossy says. social mission At Fig® we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. We believe in the mission of the United Way of Southern Chester County—our 2015 Social Mission Partner. Please consider giving to them with your dollars and your time this year.
Class for seniors.
L IV E H E R E ? G IV E H E R E . STAYS H E R E . What gets the most attention is not always what is most needed in the community. Giving to help people in natural disasters or in difficult situations pulls at your heartstrings. Americans like to fund progress and improvement. The least trendy of charitable donations is funding for seniors or helping people just sustain where they are health-wise. Programs promoting stability and sustainability are important to many of our neighbors. You can’t reverse aging, dementia, or physical disabilities. Health issues can pop up and surprise you at any age—sometimes neighbors need help to just maintain their quality of life. United Way of Southern Chester County supports programs in our area for these less-publicized needs—like helping seniors stay well and independent. The United Way funds a health clinic, counseling services, and programs for children with disabilities. They see the big picture and know that these programs are vital to making our Southern Chester County community a better place for all. That’s just one of the benefits of giving a gift directly to United Way. They invest appropriately in funding programs to fully cover the needs in our community—trendy or not.

It is something that comes naturally to all of us, and I believe that with proper instruction anyone is capable of learning how to play music. Using the traditions of the past and coupling it with the music of today, the instructors at the Mattock School of Music give students the means and desire to make music an integral part of their lives.”

Some of the dozens of outstanding caregivers who make up the Crozer Brinton Lake team.
when crozer-keystone health system opened the crozer medical plaza at
