savor kennett square

THEY CALL US “THE MUSHROOM CAPITAL OF THE WORLD.” They say we’re “A quaint town. A beer town. A place for foodies; craft coffee drinkers; lovers of foreign cuisine.” And “they” are right, of course. We wear our titles with pride, as mushrooms sprout in the famed Phillips Mushroom Farms. We sip coffee with the best of them at Philter, and we savor sumptuous scones at Talula’s Table, where Aimee Olexy has helped to put Kennett Square on the map as a foodie destination that is worth the travel. In Kennett Square we sip local. As lovers of everything craft, we have the Kennett Brewfest. And we don’t want to boast—but—we started celebrating craft beer in 1998, far ahead of the trend. Now local breweries like Kennett Brewing Co. and Victory Brewing are coming to town, giving Kennett Square a beer culture throughout the seasons. Local wineries are abundant with Paradocx Vineyard and the Flickerwood Tasting Room right on State Street. Or you can take a trip out to Chadds Ford to experience Penns Woods Winery and relax with a little yoga in their scenic vineyards. The dining scene in town is mouth-watering, with authentic Italian cuisine at the newly opened La Verona, and traditional Mexican at Taste of Puebla. The Market at Liberty Place offers an array of choices from fresh seafood to fresh juices, gluten-free soft-serve, homemade crepes, and more. If you’re the mood for something speedy, there’s always Sam’s Sub Shop—a Kennett Square landmark. Eat in or take home, just enjoy every bite. Surrounded by beautiful countryside marked by the renowned, blooming beauty that is Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square in the summer is the place to be. Be awe-inspired by the natural landscape, explore historic streets, and once your walking shoes get tired, grab a bite at a local eatery and savor Kennett Square.

a delicious INFORMED AND INSPIRED BY OUR RICH AGRICULTURAL HERITAGE AND PROXIMITY TO SOME OF THE MOST BOUNTIFUL FARM LAND IN THE COUNTRY, KENNETT SQUARE—THE MUSHROOM CAPITAL OF THE WORLD— IS A HUB FOR DISTINCTIVE DINING THAT EXTENDS BEYOND STATE STREET. Kennett’s culinary diversity and sophistication could rival that of any big city. Yet, our small-town charm and down-to-earth nature makes even the most gourmet of meals feel like a comforting taste of home. The restaurant that boasts one of the longest waits in the country (one year for the farm table at Talula’s Table) is also a relaxed and community spirited cafe, where that same exclusive dining table turns into a communal space for friends and strangers, regulars and out-oftowners, to converse over coffee and a scone. Our thriving connoisseur culture extends to coffee, cheese, mushroom

soup, local wine, burgers, beers, and tacos. Foodies have easy access to expert cheese and fish mongers, craft beer brewers, local vintners, small batch coffee makers, mushroom growers, heirloom produce farmers, glutenfree bakeries, and juice bar nutrition specialists, all who passionately share their craft with the waiting palates of Kennett Square.

We embrace our ethnic diversity and its culinary traditions—from sushi to mole, paella to portabello fries, avocado ice cream to buffalo burgers; the food choices in town are a delicious adventure in what is true new American cuisine. Collaborations are common, apparent in menu creation, wine and beer recommendations, and the number of local chefs that shop at the weekly grower-only Farmers Market or can been seen dashing across the street to buy mushrooms at the Mushroom Cap. We love to celebrate food and drink in Kennett Square with the signature Mushroom Festival, two sell out

Brew Festivals, and a Meet the Maker Fermentation Festival. Our weekly Farmers Market is a pillar of community life in the downtown and a showcase for the newest trend in farm culture. The availability of heirloom seeds and tomato plants, whoopie pies, lacto fermented krauts and pickles, whiskey barrel-aged cider and a colorful pie truck makes the Friday Farmers Market a brilliant kaleidoscope of all things Kennett. Fairly new to the Kennett food scene, the Taste of Kennett Food Tour is running tasting tours every Sunday, and we have recently added three summer outdoor dining events for June, July, and August—3rd Thursdays on State Street. Check out historickennettsquare.com or figkennett.com for all the delicious details. Raise your glass for a cheers to Kennett Square and the local delicacies that fill our stomachs and quench our thirst. Bon Appetit! Claire Murray, Historic Kennett Square

giving back jeff norman

HIS LOVE FOR CRAFT BEER OR HIS LOVE FOR THE KENNETT SQUARE COMMUNITY—WHAT’S STRONGER? It’s hard to say,

but it’s a no-brainer that without a passion for both, the Kennett Brewfest would not be possible. And we can thank Jeff Norman for that.

Now with 95 to 100 breweries and 3,500 beer lovers, Kennett Brewfest is a bonafide tradition in town. After stepping back from Historic Kennett Square, Jeff now devotes his spare time to organizing the event—this sole duty almost a full-time job in itself. As a self-proclaimed beer geek, Jeff oversees the breweries that attend the festival and specifically the Connoisseur Tasting that occurs before the official start of the brewfest.

The event is entirely volunteer run (including Jeff ), and benefits the nonprofit Historic Kennett Square organization. Jeff shares, “The Kennett Brewfest plays a major role in funding a variety of events for Downtown Kennett Square, including parades, the Farmer’s Market, and winter holiday festivities. We help support the operating capital of the organization.” Without this support, Kennett Square would not be the vibrant, cultural town that locals have come to love. For Jeff, it’s all about supporting Historic Kennett Square and helping people realize that anyone can make a difference. “When you have a dedicated group of people—if you approach it with conviction and passion—you can do great things for communities, and bring great beer to town as well.”

P H OTO G RAP H E D AT TH E H A LF M OO N RE STAU RAN T & SALO ON

In 1998, Historic Kennett Square (then known as the Kennett Square Revitalization Task Force) was looking for a way to raise funds to support the community. As an active member of the task force, Jeff and Scott Hammond, owner of Half Moon Restaurant & Saloon, had the progressive idea to host a beer festival. Then, simply put, they made it happen. The first year of the Kennett Brewfest, there were 15 breweries and 150 festivalgoers. The second year there were 700 festivalgoers. And the rest is history.

talula’s picks A RECIPE FOR A FARMER’S MARKET FEAST WITH FRIENDS & FAMILY, BY AIMEE OLEXY. Do not miss the Friday Farmer’s Market in Kennett Square from 2 – 6 pm. You will see shopkeepers, chefs, locals, and tourists enchanted with all of the regional goodies, fixings, and produce. Market Manager Abby Morgan can direct you to the delicious weekly highlights. Adjacent to the Friday Market is Talula’s Table we can fix you an Iced Chai or Caramel Latte for an afternoon pick-me-up on your way, too. Try this “recipe” at the Friday Market! It is a scavenger hunt of sorts, where the fun will be in shopping and collecting. The end result is a local, seasonal dinner I would surely endorse as long as you add a a gooey, ripe piece of cheese from TALULA’S TABLE and a barrel-aged hard cider from BIG HILL CIDERWORKS !

Start with delicious dumplings and hors d’oeuvres from the newly featured food truck called the WANDERING CHEF , add ANITA’S guacamole and TASTE OF PUEBLA’S salsa fresca with some chips for flavor and fun!

Grab the first corn you see—it is sweet and just picked. Delicious on the grill or boiled. Serve on a big platter with chopped herbs or peppers.

Gather salad greens and radishes from RAMBLIN’ ROOTS , hard-boiled MEADOWSET FARM eggs, and a delicious dressing from TALULA’S TABLE to make a big, healthy salad.

For your sweet tooth, you must make a plate of chocolate truffles from SWEET SALVATION and wash them down with a cider from BIG HILL CIDERWORKS and fresh berries.

Grab a plump whole chicken from FLYING PLOW FARM . Season liberally and roast over big, sliced potatoes, onions, and turnips from LONDONVALE FARM .

One last secret trick... a treat for your dog is a must from K-9 and then freshen up your kitchen and tired hands with peppermint wash from LONDON LANE or renowned, gorgeous ELLEN APRIL soaps.

HAPPY HUNTING, EATING, AND COOKING! Let me know how it goes.

authentic sandy bertrando ON A CORNER, TUCKED AT THE END OF THE STREET AT THE EDGE OF TOWN, you can find

Sam’s Sub Shop. Open since 1946, always in the same State Street location, Sam’s Sub Shop is a Kennett Square staple; it’s the go-to spot for a hoagie, cheese steak, or sandwich, hot or cold—but always fresh.

Sandy Bertrando’s parents opened Sam’s Sub Shop 68 years ago, and it’s stayed in the family ever since. As a child, she and her sister spent summer days and after-school hours behind the counter, serving Kennett Square locals with the same philosophy that still holds true today: fresh is best. Every piece of meat and cheese is cut to order, straight from slicer to sandwich;

24 figkennett.com

bacon is cooked to crispy perfection the moment you order a BLT; egg salad is prepared every morning; the burgers are made fresh, too, of course. And though Kennett Square has changed over the past 68 years, some things remain the same. It’s easy to taste why this classic has stuck around. Known as a local landmark, natives of Kennett Square faithfully return to Sam’s Sub Shop because Sandy faithfully serves the best subs in town. “There are people we’ve grown up with and seen for years, they move away and come back. When the class reunions are in town, everyone stops in for sandwich,” Sandy says. The Kennett Paper gave credit to them in

an article titled “You Know You’re a Kennett Area Native When…” The answer— (you guessed it)—you get your cheesesteaks and hoagies from Sam’s Sub Shop.

It’s safe to say, for the people of Kennett Square, Sam’s Sub Shop tastes like home. Where tradition has stayed in the family, the owners know your name, the food is always fresh, and if you ask “what’s good,” you can bet a loving regular will respond, “everything!” Stop in and say “hi” to Sandy at Sam’s Sub Shop, 329 East State Street, Kennett Square.

AT FIG®, WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF A COMMUNITY that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. We believe in the mission of Kennett Area Community Service—our 2014 Social Mission Partner. Please consider giving to them with your dollars and your time this year. Find out more at kacsonline.net.

Melanie Weiler (Executive Director); Christie Doak; Norby McDonough; Pete D’Angelo; Lucy D’Angelo; Betsy Vergnano; Veronica Jenkins (Food Cupboard Manager)

THROUGH GENEROUS SUPPORT and full community collaboration,

Kennett Area Community Service provides valuable resources to our neighbors in need. For example, this June KACS is excited to expand its raised bed garden program, providing fresh produce and education opportunities. Thanks to Longwood Rotary, the Chester County Food Bank, and Longwood Gardens, the Food Cupboard gardens have grown from 45 to 160 square feet of vegetable garden space. Our Mission is “Serving People in Their Time of Need.”

We are an organization committed to serving families and all individuals in the fight against hunger and prevention of homelessness in the Kennett Area and surrounding communities. We help members

of the Kennett community to lift themselves out of the cycle of poverty. We achieve this goal through both raising awareness in the community to the needs of the poor and working with financially challenged individuals and families to identify and find solutions to their problems through a network of community connections that care. We could not do this work without our dedicated volunteers and support from the entire Kennett community. To all the individuals, businesses, churches, and agencies that support the work of KACS,

THANK YOU!

If you would like to get involved, visit our website to learn about opportunities and to complete a volunteer application.

Chester County Hospital • 701 E. Marshall St., West Chester • 610.431.5000 • ChesterCountyHospital.org

CHESTER COUNTY HOSPITAL’S NEW MOTHER AND BABY PAVILION IS NOW WELCOMING FAMILIES. The preparation. The painstaking concern for every detail. The care and support. All leading up to this day.

It was all worth it. Our new Mother and Baby Pavilion is everything new families want and more. Private, spacious, home-like rooms are bathed in natural light and equipped with comfortable glider rockers, a sofa bed to accommodate family members who would like to spend the night, and Euro-style bathrooms. There is a nesting room for adopting parents to encourage family bonding. A well-baby nursery gives new moms a chance to take a few moments for themselves. Patients and guests can grab a snack or beverage from a well-stocked nourishment station. Most important, the level of care is all you have come to know and trust from Chester County Hospital. A Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit—the highest level available in Chester County—is operated as part of the CHOP Newborn Care program. Neonatologists work together with the Hospital’s perinatologists, obstetricians, pediatricians, anesthesiologists, specially trained nurses and others to deliver the

highest level of care to newborns around the clock. This level of care is critical to the health of babies born early who require observation or for those who need treatment due to complications.

You have always known us for the best place to deliver your newborn. Our new Mother and Baby Pavilion is part of an experience that makes memories to last a lifetime.

CAROL LESHER

LELE GALER

Annie is a departure from Carol’s sought after landscape paintings. Creating work that inspires happiness is what it’s about. The loose brushwork and vibrant palette translate just as well from a large painting of the countryside or a view of the sea, to a small portrait of a favorite family pet.

Lele uses oil, encaustic, and welded steel to create artworks that evoke a feeling of energy and beauty. Subject matters include dense tall forests, natural vegetation, and Roman temples. Showing locally at Galer Estate Winery in Kennett Square, the Chester County Studio Tour, and various local shows and galleries.

A FAMILY LEGACY CONTINUES Since 1892, the Chandler family has been privileged to serve families in the Kennett Square and Chadds Ford areas during their time of loss. Four generations of dedicated service and professionalism is what has sustained the family’s reputation in funeral service. We are now proud to announce that Sara Chandler, our fifth-generation family member, will be following in her great-great grandfather’s footsteps. Sara has been assisting families alongside of her father, Chad, his brother, Jim IV and director, Joe Yasik. The entire staff will continue the Chandler family legacy of providing compassionate and dignified service to the families we serve before, during, and after their time of need.
