DESIGN
for good
who are we? why are we here? Art helps us discover those answers. Art illuminates, imitates, and interprets our reality— encouraging us to explore the boundaries of what is safe and giving us a foundation for inquiry. Every culture produces works of art, the purpose being to express the ideas of history, time, and self-discovery while simultaneously offering the viewer pleasure. At its most powerful, art can exude harmony through community. Here at Moxie House, we believe in our mantra: Design For Good. As we approach our 10-year anniversary of Fig®, we are reminded of the positive ways in which Lancaster has become a refuge for the arts, and how that has helped shape the culture of those who live and visit here. Not only does this community foster the spirit of creativity, but we invite others to watch as we transcend differences, change perceptions, and unify our City. What does that mean? It means our environment expresses ideas of who we are. It means that we wonder; we seek answers. Human expression is a form of culture that must be valued in order to evolve. At Moxie House, we’re working on refining our culture and challenging the idea of success—believing that the more we give back, the more we succeed. We are fostering an environment where no one’s individualism is penalized and everyone’s strengths are shared. Which leads me to my work as a board member with the Lancaster City Alliance. The Building On Strength campaign is part of a larger economic development plan for Lancaster for the next 15 years. We have achieved so much; and we’re excited for the future and ready to explore how each of us can, individually, do our part to uplift the City for the greater good. We are Moxie House, the creator and producer of Fig®. Our mission is to embrace our community’s ever-changing needs, showcase the advantages of cooperation, and change perceptions. Fig® is a tool for evolution, growth, and advancement. This arts & culture issue is dedicated to A City Authentic— where intelligent design is just the start. Get to know The Makers. Get to know the Self Made. And get to know the beauty that inspires us in those quiet hours to Design For Good.

Coleson Fine Clothiers’ strategic transformation is a direct result of the tremendous growth of TMB (since 1969) and will continue to fulfill customers’ expectations of iconic and distinguished service. Under the designation Coleson, the brand will begin a proprietary line of clothing—partnering with five different fabric mills in Europe, the United States, and Canada. The Coleson Collection will offer tailored looks to fit their customers and outstanding designs for suits, sport coats, pants, and shirts. “We took an aging, underused property and brought it back to life. We made it viable again. Today there are 450 or 500 people working here. It’s a hip mixed-use community designed for living— like a miniature city inside the city. Work here, live here, play here; get a cake, get dinner, or stay the night. I have spent 19 years abstracting the female figure, bringing to light that which was once dark and shameful, creating on canvas with raw honesty, and turning the ugliest parts of the Self into something beautiful and invaluable. susan j. gottlieb has a meaningful connection to the natural world, a visible
radiance from intentional living. She is a backwoods wonderer and a sensory explorer who believes in the expansion of awareness and beauty by way of experience. She’s fearfully made. Her discovery demands reinvention and her paintings express both relationship and possibility—not just the complex landscape of the artist’s mind, but the color, texture, emotional expression, and ultimately the universality of being. Susan’s fascination with origins has led her to travel the world and patiently wait for an awakening. Italy and Tunisia are two of her favorites. A select few are

afforded the opportunity to travel with her on these uniquely curated cultural experiences. The purpose is to learn how to advance sensory perceptions and pay attention to what matters most. Life is an amazing treasure box. Bring it back home. Share it! See more. Feel more. Taste more. Become more. The Edge of Possibility: An American Sketchbook is her edited compilation of actual sketchbooks she created on eight different drives across the United States of America, spanning the distance of some 22,000 miles. The landscapes. The contours. The boundaries and borders. The vast notion of hope, risk, fear. The light, and space, and sky. The splendid domestic topography.

Her book is more than visual storytelling; it captures the edge of unsayable sensations. Each collage painting hides a vast number of interpretations. At the very limits of perception, Susan finds the horizon and folds memory into existence. View Susan’s solo show “Here: An American Landscape” on First Friday, October 2 at Red Raven. The Edge of Possibility: An American Sketchbook, the successor to her first book: The Skin of the Milk: A Roman Sketchbook, will be on sale as well. Interested in cultural exploration trips? “The theatre is the mirror to life—and EPAC represents that 2500-year-old tradition. The makers are those who observe the world, observe life, the culture, society, and how it functions and works and they share it with the audience. The audience actively chooses to embrace the perception. Nurturing new talent and those artists who are driven by that same passion to observe, express, and explain their thoughts and share it with the community is how we extend our legacy.

“All of my work is very much about place—places that are important to me, places I have traveled to, spiritual places. All of the original images capture a particular moment, at a particular time, in a particular place. They are meant to evoke the smell of the place, the taste of the place as well as the visual colors and textures. Each of the 18 prints in the Reflections Series are a single straight photograph of the many reflections of the Duomo in Florence—a 360 degree view. This series was first exhibited in December 2014 in a one-person show at the Kansas City Artists Coalition in Kansas City, Missouri. My most recent show was at The Ware Center in March 2015 where I displayed 12 prints from my ongoing Triptych Series. I am currently seeking gallery representation in the Philadelphia area.” – Karen Schory

ALICIA BYLER
for ten years mommalicious has
inspired locals, tourists, and other creatives as a place where imagination runs deep and vintage romance is the standard. From generating nostalgia to cultivating a refuge for selfexpression, Alicia Byler has honored the space at 310 North Queen Street. No matter where you looked—up or down—the thoughtful details had been lovingly culled: a doorway mosaic made of colorful broken ceramic that offered “welcome,” doors that hung under the roof, perhaps representing opportunities come and gone. These were the iconic hallmarks of a maker at work. What you might not have seen was her studio—the space where her inner life beautified. Kept behind a closed sliding door, it was the heartbeat of Mommalicious. Year after year the store showed steady growth. Vintage clothing, furniture, stationery, perfumes, and curiosities—nearly 2,000 square feet filled
42 figlancaster.com
with items people wanted to buy that Alicia had lovingly chosen. With each passing season Alicia’s desire to look inward was growing and she wanted to embrace her creative side more fully. Her decision to close Mommalicious, think new ideas, and have new adventures happened after a series of conversations she had with herself and her eversupportive husband, Dennis Snader, who own the building and call it home. What does the future hold for Alicia and Mommalicious? She will rent a 200 square foot space inside Madcap & Co.—a retail store with individual sellers offering exceptional handmade goods—and Mommalicious Bohemian Romance will occupy the exact space where her studio once was. Alicia will continue to explore her artwork and the layers of her life—and plans to create a line of stationery as Sweet Dish Design. Follow Alicia as she continues to showcase the maker’s movement at Mommalicious.com.

as a self-described dash of soul, a dribble of indie rock, and the occasional burp of pop, Meg & The Right sound is a 4-piece marriage of singer Megan McDermott, bassist Chris Jakubowicz, drummer Jeremy Bentley, and electric guitar player Jason Sherman. One thing is for sure: Meg has the power within—and a voice that can make the tiny hairs stand up on your arms. Her bold and sultry sound evokes both a sense of freedom and a longing to completely let go. The tension and intrigue in her singing is as beautiful as her ripped tights. “If it’s not original, we do stuff that we like: indie or re-imagined pop,” Jason explains. “I love Karen O. She’s incredible. And Billie Holiday. There’s soul in both. I can’t help but sing that way; it’s definitely a little bit of girl power,” she says, admitting she has influences from a lot of female performers.
RHYTHMS. NOT ALGORITHMS.
Each member has had roots in many different bands throughout the years—but together they’ve developed a sound that they’ve made uniquely their own. But the Right Sound comes from the efforts of the whole group—and that also includes Jason’s mustache, Jeremy’s beard, and Chris’ witty humor. The band practices every week and has played 60 to 70 shows this year, saying they’re transitioning from background music to something that truly garners an audience’s attention. “I just try to be me on stage,” Meg says with a laugh. “The measure of success is having fun.” And, as Chris adds, “When you do what you love, you never work a day in your life.” “Sometimes you just want to have fun with the music, have some beers, and have a good time playing with people you like.” Jeremy adds. Chris sums up by saying, “We just want people to feel good about life.”
VINYL AT HEART
They’re excited to release singles over the next few weeks to support their Kickstarter campaign—including “Tassology,” “Crooked Ways,” and “Some Assembly Required.” The full-length album is forthcoming.

INSPIRING AND SUPPORTING THE CREATIVE SPIRIT
I’m learning that circles are like eyes. That sometimes it doesn’t matter what elephants eat for lunch. That the ceiling is really the floor upside down. That dogs sing. That it’s o.k. if we do, too. That the wind smells like pizza. That fairies speak to strangers. That writing is like a bell, and nobody hears it ringing in quite the same way. mary frances gallagher - age 14 Write From the Heart Alumnus; Today, a Writing Fellow at Brown University.

a creative oasis...since 2001 In this hectic world, Write From The Heart workshops still take their time. Led by writer and teacher, Melissa Greene, these gentle, uplifting classes awaken the creative spirit—slowly and joyfully—without intimidation or pressure. Melissa fosters trust and, with humor and whimsy, her work delights and enlivens—guiding us to slow down, reflect, and find our own voice. Workshops are a safe haven, especially for those who have always longed to write but thought they couldn’t. With kindness, and a touch of mischief, Melissa guides us to look beyond fear, see beauty in the commonplace, and love the art of writing. Not for anyone else, but ourselves.

you’re in good hands dr. keith kuhlengel is a fascinating man whose Midwest upbringing has helped shape him into the accomplished and talented neurosurgeon he is today. With two decades of uncompromised, committed patient care, Dr. Kuhlengel is proud to be part of the team of professionals at Lancaster NeuroScience & Spine Associates. “I grew up on a farm in southern Illinois where the family doctor was always the most respected in the community,” he says, knowing back then that he would have a career in the medical field. “I found out, being from a farming background and being very hands-on mechanical, with tractors and equipment and stuff, that I actually enjoyed performing surgery.” Dr. Kuhlengel admits that he fell in love with neurosurgery— the long hours, the rigorous training. At age 5 he started practicing piano for 1-2 hours a day. He also helped work on the family farm. “It was simple: You did the job and you couldn’t quit until the job was done,” he says. That mechanical inclination and mastery of equipment is also part of Dr. Kuhlengel’s hobby. He collects and restores old tractors. In addition to his collection of more than 30 tractors, including his father’s first one, he gets pleasure out of bringing them back to life. “If you look at those early tractors, they are mechanical artwork,” he says as his eyes gleam and he talks about their brilliant paint jobs, decals, and individual histories. What do machinery and the brain and spine have in common? “The functionality,” he says. It’s helpful to know you’re in good hands! “What this is all about is taking care of patients. I always try to treat my patients the way I’d want my family treated if they came here.”
