a holiday invitation you’re invited. spend the holiday in the city with us. Nine holidays have passed since Fig® first appeared in
mailboxes and hit city streets, and we know what is truly important to us—especially during the holidays. We always shop local. The best boutiques are right here in our city, and it’s worth the cold winter stroll to find that perfect gift for your special someone. Bundled tight with reusable bags in tow, we scour local shops for every name on our ‘nice’ list. We always eat local. Because the holidays are all about eating well, and eating well in Lancaster is an easy thing to do. From traditional Pennsylvania Dutch to worldly ethnic cuisine, there’s a taste for every culture in this city. And we always entertain locally. You can find us in the audience at the Fulton Theatre or the Ware Center, experiencing the cathartic emotions of performance. You can find us dancing at a local concert at Tellus 360, kicking off our shoes and getting caught up in the moment. Look for our faces and listen for our laughter; if there’s something happening downtown, we’re there. This holiday season, we invite you to share some of our beloved downtown traditions. Turn the pages of this issue and read about the local businesses that make the city such a special place to be. Then grab your warmest jacket and softest scarf, and head downtown to love local with us. matt early is a man on a mission. After living in New York and working in the audio industry for most of the 80s and 90s, Matt decided to bring his expertise back home to Pennsylvania. In 2000 he founded Residential Media Systems (RMS), introducing cutting-edge technology and media systems into homes throughout Central PA and beyond. In 2013, Matt recognized an opportunity to shift his sights on a new venture while being able to serve his existing clients. Longtime employee Caleb Fetter shared this vision, and his desire to be an entrepreneur created the perfect springboard for Caleb to take over RMS. Today, Matt’s lifelong love affair with music and decades of experience in audio has been the main ingredients for his new venture. “Now Listen Here is both a listening and
now listen here
shopping experience that focuses on rediscovering music,” Matt says of his new store. “My mission is two-fold: I want to introduce an entire generation that grew up listening to compressed music (mp3s) to hear their favorite artists as they originally wanted to be heard. I also want to reintroduce to a generation the nostalgia of when listening to music was an event. Remember going to a record store to get the latest record and gathering friends around the stereo to listen to it for the first time? Playing it over and over again while reading the liner notes and memorizing the lyrics!” When you step into Now Listen Here you enter the “My-Fi” Room, Matt’s self-titled name dedicated to personal audio. From headphones to computer speakers and all things wireless that connect your device to your music library. This is also a place for beginners to get introduced to entry-level
turntables and affordable gear. Down the hall to your left will be the future “All White” Room, bringing you a surreal vibe and listening experience. Finally, to the right is the “Hi-Fi” Room, featuring some of the finest equipment available for the ultimate listening experience. In this room, analog and digital music live in harmony and special attention has been made to focus on North American-made gear curated specially by Matt with over 30 years of audio experience. “I want to share my knowledge in a showroom environment where people can come and listen. It’s a sharing experience, a learning experience, and an opportunity to improve how music and sound are perceived and enjoyed.” Head to Now Listen Here to become part of the music movement that’s energizing Lancaster. Take the earbuds out, sit down, and discover a new way to savor the sounds.

lancaster ironworks
a building wrought with a history
structured by steel, the story of Lancaster Ironworks reaches back to the early 1900s. Designed by famed Lancaster architect Henry Y. Shaub, the building was first home to Posey Iron Works. Inside its towering facade, pipe, steel, and wrought iron were manufactured to be used around the world—from the dredging of the Panama Canal to both World Wars. After Posey Iron Works closed in 1983, the building changed hands as the years passed—until it was eventually purchased by Scott Graeber in 2011. His vision for the historic Posey Iron Works was one of revitalization, paying homage to the building’s original character while giving it newfound purpose. The 9,000-square-foot brick structure took three years to renovate, and now it finally stands as home to 11 luxury apartment units.
560 south prince street 717.208.4647
Modern technology intersects with historic character as you walk through the key-coded entry. Inside the common area, custom lighting showcases the building’s historic character and the original grand staircase has been restored to its former grandeur. Original iron installations from Posey Iron Works flank the walls, creating a modern industrial feeling that carries through each unique apartment. Inside each unit, deluxe finishes and high ceilings create spacious rooms that are rich in both quality and character. For their tireless work on the Posey Iron Works structure, the team behind Lancaster IronWorks has been awarded the Historic Preservation Award. Their adaptive reuse of this historic Lancaster Landmark is an integral addition to the South Side of Lancaster, a corner of our city that is quickly on the rise. Just a few blocks from Penn Square, Lancaster IronWorks is ready to make the South Side your new favorite place.

a french culinary term,
“Mise en Place” is the systematic preparation a chef takes to create a meal. Prep the ingredients. Prepare the sauces. Chop the vegetables. Collect the spices. This organization is done before a pot ever hits the stovetop or pan is placed in the oven. This practice allows the chef to prepare the best meal possible. Between Theresa and her daughters, Courtney, Kiersten, and Maddie, this family of foodies understands the term well. Now they’re bringing this philosophy downtown in their store Mise en Place, opening soon on the 300-block of North Queen Street.
mise en place
“I grew up in Lancaster coming into town to go to Lancaster Central Market. My mother was a great cook; we were always in the kitchen,” Theresa remembers. “I’ve shared those moments in the kitchen with my daughters, too.” Courtney adds, “We’ve had the opportunity to travel and taste cuisines across the world. There’s never a dinner where we’re not passing plates around, sampling different dishes.” The foodies shared laughs and dreams at the table as they talked about opening a kitchen store together one day. In Mise en Place they’ll feature all of the
kitchen gadgets, utensils, cookware, bakeware, barware, and serveware that you need to equip your home kitchen. Stop in for All-Clad steel pots and pans, Microplane zesters, Best Whisks, Nordic Ware, and more. “We want this to be a place where home cooks can shop alongside professional chefs and feel comfortable, get more organized in the kitchen, find the best products available, and learn new things,” Kiersten says. As a pastry chef, it’s safe to say Kiersten feels comfortable in the kitchen. And we’re certain that this team will make you feel comfortable, too.

lancaster city mounted unit
on any given day, you might find Liam,
Duke, Charlie, and Ozzy trotting confidently through our city streets. As strong as they are beautiful, these pillars of muscle have become a Lancaster landmark. Whether they’re parked at Lancaster Central Market or patrolling the streets on First Fridays, the Lancaster City Mounted Unit is respected and admired by locals and visitors alike. Since the unit’s founding in 1979, The Mounted Unit has become an integral part of the city. The horses’ towering stature gives officers heightened visibility when patrolling the streets, an especially useful outlook during crowded events. With imposing power and agility, the horses are able to efficiently navigate alleyways where patrol cars cannot. Together, the horses and their officers also issue parking
tickets, traffic citations, investigate criminal complaints, and monitor traffic accidents. But most importantly, The Mounted Unit acts as ambassadors to the City of Lancaster. From directions to dinner suggestions, the officers serve visitors and residents from the saddle. And the horses are always on standby, ready to greet a curious child or trek through bustling traffic. As they assuredly protect and serve our community, in return, the community of Lancaster serves them. The Mounted Unit is solely supported by donated funds from individuals, businesses, and community groups. The cost for feed, fencing, supplies, tack, veterinary visits, and barn maintenance is reliant upon the thankful community members who generously support Lancaster’s favorite equines: Liam, Duke, Charlie, and Ozzy.

reaches back to the early 1900s. With a storied history as a Prohibition speakeasy, new owners Matthew and Starla Russell aim to honor its historic character by serving classic dishes with a modern touch. michelle kime of imagine goods
as a lancaster native, mother of four, and lover of travel, Michelle Kime had been looking for a way to spread her generosity beyond the boundaries of the county. It wasn’t until she met Aiyana Ehrman in 2008 that she figured how to do just that. A few short weeks after being introduced, the two boarded a plane destined for Cambodia, where they would find the inspiration and motivation to found Imagine Goods. “Through my travelling, I had seen poverty before,” Michelle says, “but nothing quite like in Cambodia. I came back and knew I had to do something, but didn’t know quite what. Aiyana and I started out working with organizations already local to Cambodia, doing things like drilling water wells and establishing sanitation irrigation. Then we met girls who had been rescued from human trafficking through Agape International. The girls undergo counseling and are taught in the trade of sewing. I thought, if we can
help these girls find sewing projects and then sell their work, they would be able to make a livable wage with their skills.” And thus Imagine Goods began. It started small with simple projects for the women, so they could develop their sewing skills. Small projects grew larger, and the girls went on to sewing bags, tablecloths, aprons, and eventually dresses and clothing. Since 2008, Imagine Goods has developed into a thriving social enterprise that allows the women to support themselves and their families in fulfilling and meaningful ways. Michelle remembers one moment in Cambodia, “I saw a girl in the sewing room. She was only 17 and had been through so much. She was holding a dress she had sewn and was dancing around the room, twirling and smiling. She felt empowered and confident.” These innocent moments of joy might not have been possible, if it wasn’t for the work of Michelle and Imagine Goods. figlancaster.com

LOCAL
the story of john j. snyder, jr. Around the holidays, we often take a larger view of the world around us. We take stock of what is important and think about the kind of mark we want to leave on our community—today and in the future. Lancaster is fortunate to have individuals, like John J. Snyder, Jr., actively considering how their passions can live beyond their lifetime. John, a lover of local art, architecture and history, spent his lifetime collecting decorative arts. He was the kind of person who would take apart a rare clock to see how it worked and composed letters on a typewriter. He had a love and passion for our local history, and wanted to see it preserved long after he was gone. We’re proud to say that John chose to work with the Community Foundation before he passed away in 2013. Now, our community has the John J. Snyder, Jr. Historic Preservation Fund, which will support local structures, like Historic Rock Ford, for the education and appreciation of future generations. This year, and every year, his legacy will live on. Thank you, John. Alone we can make a difference. But together we can transform Lancaster County.

Staging Ground An American Theater and Its Ghosts Leslie Stainton “Reading Leslie Stainton’s Staging Ground is like having a front-row seat at a thrilling epic drama. Stainton packs her stage with real characters, the famous and the infamous, and events unfold in a tumult of action both tragic and comic and at times heartbreakingly poignant. This book is great theater—immediate, engrossing, cathartic.”

painting the
talk of the town
“Fulton Theatre has worked with Ville Painters for the last 10 years to maintain the exterior of this National Historic Landmark. They have been excellent partners in identifying not only painting needs, but also addressing carpentry concerns. Their approach to treating our exterior has resulted in a more durable exterior than we anticipated, and their work has been delivered both on time and on budget. Their staff is courteous and responsive to our needs. We highly recommend them for quality, pricing, and service.” Aaron Young, Managing Director
“Repainting the Fulton Theatre is a project that required an abundance of attention to detail. Proper cleaning was required to remove years of road dirt and carbon. A 60’ hi-lift was used to access all areas of the project. It required expert craftsmanship to properly prepare and repaint all of the various architectural components of the theatre’s facade, as well as the two adjoining buildings and the structure directly north. Only the highest quality coatings were used to protect this historic icon. Ville Painters is proud to have been a part of preserving history.” Steve at Ville Painters

The Lancaster Public Library has been providing library service for more than 250 years, and every day nearly 2,000 people walk through their doors and enrich their lives. Through hundreds of cultural and educational programs, free Internet and computer access, language learning materials, and literacy resources, the library changes lives and builds the community. The Lancaster City location is also home to unique services such as the Autism Resource Center and the Duke Street Business Center, with resources to help start and grow businesses, as well as research grants. As a non-profit organization, LPL must raise more than 60% of its budget each year—so they rely on generous community support. Stop by and explore the Lancaster City, Leola, or Mountville branches. Chances are, they’ll surprise you!
A new addition to Downtown Lancaster, Friendship Heart Gallery strives to offer its Individuals a creative outlet, where the focus is expressing capabilities through art. THE SEPARATORS L – R: Alex Abel, Colin Deery, & Matt Abel
young & talented Don’t let their youth fool you. The Separators may be young to the eyes, but to the ears their sound is reminiscent of post-punk greats from years gone past. Think The Strokes, The Cure, and maybe one day The Separators will stand alongside these alternative rock legends. Brothers Alex and Matt Abel have honed their musical compatibility since childhood, spending late nights making music together. When Colin Deery fell into the mix, the trio found the perfect spot where friendship intersects with musicianship. Cemented in brotherhood and as bandmates, the group began writing and creating their sound. Just a year ago, The Separators recorded their first EP, “Sixes & Sevens.” To the listener, “Sixes & Sevens” is a seven-track stunner, but The Separators want you to know that even better things are on the way.
RHYTHMS. NOT ALGORITHMS.
Guitarist Alex says, “It was our first attempt at writing songs. It is a youthful representation of us, filled with young experiences.” Frontman Colin adds, “The recording process really changed us. We’re a better band now.” This pragmatic dedication to improvement promises big things in the future as fans can expect their sound to continue to mature and develop. Be on the lookout for the debut of their next single in conjunction with a behindthe-scenes music video. With this new release, The Separators give us a chance to experience their redeveloped sound and to get to know the young men producing it. Look for their video online and like The Separators on Facebook to learn when you can catch them live in Downtown Lancaster.
VINYL AT HEART
Listen to “Sixes & Sevens” at soundcloud.com/the-separators “When I listen to new singer/songwriters/ bands...it’s only natural to make comparisons to bands that we already have heard on the radio. Checking out The Separators music, I was reminded of The Jam, Madness, and early music from The Who.”

introducing
laser spine surgery to lancaster
laser spine surgery is an alternative approach to traditional
open neck and back surgery which uses the latest technologies available. Lancaster NeuroScience & Spine Associates is excited to offer laser spine surgery to the Lancaster community at their outpatient surgery center, The NeuroSpine Center (located directly next to their main office). Many factors go in to determining eligibility for laser spine surgery so it is highly recommended you schedule a consultation to discuss your options with one of our neurosurgeons. The Neurosurgeons of LNSA would be happy to discuss your condition and give their recommendation for the best course of treatment; whether it be traditional surgery, laser surgery, or a more conservative treatment such as physical therapy, pain management, or medical acupuncture. For more information, or to schedule a consultation, call 717.569.5331 or visit lancasterlaserspine.com.
