HEAR THAT, LANCASTER? It’s the sound of a crowd buzzing with anticipation, waiting for the show to start. It’s the tapping of a microphone—a “check, one, check, two.” It’s a guitar being tuned; a vocalist stretching her voice; a whisper backstage between producers. It’s the sound of a child, plucking the strings of a violin, learning the notes for the first time. It’s a young trumpet player and the soft encouragement of a teacher. It’s the laughter of children; a choir of young life, joining together in harmony. It’s the voice of Music For Everyone, bridging divides, standing alongside educators and students. It’s the sound of darting feet, spinning to salsa. It’s a piano in the city, reverberating off the buildings nearby. It’s the wail of a blues singer, crying out to the audience. It’s the sultry song of a saxophone, the intricacies of the symphony, and a patient audience waiting to burst with applause. It’s the sound of a City Authentic, and the music lovers and music makers who bring their passion to Lancaster, 365 days a year. In our first ever music issue, we would like to pay tribute to these everyday rock stars. We’re saying thank you to the musicians for creating the sounds that move us; to the venues that host live music for our listening pleasure; to the teachers and volunteers who work every day to carry on the tradition; and to the organizations who promote awareness and support musical education, for all ages. THE CITY OF LANCASTER IS ALIVE AND PULSING WITH MUSIC. TAKE A WALK THROUGH THE STREETS ONE EVENING AND HEAR IT FOR YOURSELF. Mike McMonagle, Sam Campbell, & Chris Bejgrowicz—three of Fig’s bloggers—fill us in on what’s new in the City of Lancaster’s music scene. Read these blogs and many more at figlancaster.com.

It’s a Friday night in Downtown Lancaster and you have options. Live music options, that is. Depending on your mood, you can visit any number of venues, bars, art spaces, retail stores—heck, private residences—and catch a variety of artists in action. Singer-songwriters, bluegrass, party bands, DJs, jazz, rock & roll—it’s all there for the experiencing. Longtime Lancastrians will tell you that this is not a new phenomenon. The Chameleon Club has a storied history of not only luring high-quality touring acts to town but of helping nurture local up-and-comers to national recognition. The Village hosted Springsteen and Gregg Allman. The Blue Star, in its heyday, was a viable destination regardless of who was playing. But there’s been a shift in recent years; the scene has grown. There are the obvious additions, with Tellus360 recently renovating its space to add two full-blown stages, and Lancaster Dispensing Co. ramping up its music profile and regularly featuring nationally touring acts. The Ware Center and Trust Performing Arts Center, too, have added live music to their calendars. But if you look closer, you’ll start to notice a new class of unconventional spaces hosting shows—art galleries like It’s Modern Art and the Fulton Street Arts Cooperative; retailers like Rhyme and Reason and Art & Glassworks; restaurants like The Fridge, The Seed, and Chestnut Hill Cafe. Come Music Friday (for the uninitiated, observed on the third Friday of each month), the list swells even more.

The bottom line is that live music is virtually everywhere nowadays. And this is no quantity-over-quality situation, either. Lancaster-based bands and songwriters are steadily making a name for themselves with regular airplay on the Philadelphia-based independent radio station WXPN. They are going on national tours, building fan bases well beyond the Central PA borders, showing music markets far and wide what Lancaster has to offer. But this doesn’t mean they are leaving their roots in the dust. After all, there’s nothing quite like a hometown show—a packed room of supporters who “knew you when,” who bought the debut album and bragged about it to their friends, who still wear that first t-shirt the band screen-printed themselves. A music “scene” is more than just a smattering of venues in close proximity to one another. It’s composed of the artists themselves, the audiences, the families and friends, the bartenders, the promoters. And while it has grown considerably over the past few decades, I think it’s safe to say that Lancaster’s live music landscape is nowhere near plateauing. It’s ever-evolving. It’s maturing. It’s on the cusp of becoming “more,” without losing the charm of what it was that brought it to this point in time. downtown venues Lancaster’s music venues range from the sublime to the, “Surprise!” From history to, “Hello, we host music events now.” You are never far from a stunning array of live music in Lancaster. The Fulton Opera House opened in 1852 and is the longest-running theater in America. The not-for-profit Fulton Opera House Foundation operates it and oversaw a

$9.5 million renovation in 1995. A tour and performance at this remarkable gem cannot be missed. View their full schedule and history at TheFulton.org. The Ware Center at Millersville University is the Fulton’s next-door neighbor and boasts two exquisite performance spaces. Steinman Hall is an acoustically-perfect theater, seating 360. The Grand Salon upstairs seats roughly 150 and combines crystalline acoustics with two-story curved windows overlooking Prince Street, Central Market, and the southern skyline. The Ware Center hosts a wide variety of music, film, and dance. The Chameleon Club opened in 1985 and has hosted Grammy winners and multimillion sellers. On a par with (the nowdefunct) CBGB’s in Manhattan, Chameleon has the history, immediacy, and intimacy that most rock clubs only hope to emulate and rock fans hope to find. James Cotton, The Ramones, Los Lobos, Psychedelic Furs, Live: a listing of the acts is encyclopedic. The Village Nightclub mostly serves as Lancaster’s dance hall. Loud beats and cheap drinks roll over a lighted dance floor from the days of Saturday Night Fever. But The Village owns plenty of its own pop and rock music history. Bruce Springsteen, Peter Frampton, and Gregg Allman have played there, and top regional bands still appear monthly. It’s a College ID night and “tribute band” nirvana. The Lancaster Dispensing Co. tops the list if you want a great meal with your music. Scores of sandwiches and appetizers complement full meals and soups made from scratch daily. Locals call the place DipCo and know the music will be special on Friday and Saturday nights from 10 PM-1 AM. The kitchen is open late, and it only takes one visit to become a regular. You’ll be in good company. Tellus 360 began calling us to table just three years ago. The boutique/art gallery/ furniture designer started hosting “Table Top” music sessions early on; musicians played while pot-luck and BYOB offerings were shared around massive, unique tables. 2014 will see the boutique move upstairs

while stages for 200 and 550 seats will be the new main purpose for the front and back rooms, respectively. They serve lunch and offer a complete bar, but those amenities barely hint at what this new community destination has to offer.

Lancaster’s music resonates past, present, and future. Our art galleries, vintage stores, coffee shops and cafes host music events. Our city and county parks host live concerts that draw thousands from around the region. We have 40-person house concerts and 4,000+ convention center shows. We place more than a dozen tuned and decorated pianos outdoors—all summer, downtown thanks to Keys to the City and Music For Everyone. We carry a tune and carry on as well as any city.

Let’s wish them the best in reaching their goals of touring Japan, South America, and Europe, plus a slot on the famed Warped Tour.

two bands going all out David Garman, lead vocalist and founding member of the Carousel Kings, is proud to be a Lancaster native. He was glad to give Fig® some insight into the band and their hometown. Having just wrapped up a tour of the Northeast, they return to keep writing, practicing, brainstorming, and finishing up their second album, “Unity.” Three videos are in the works for the initial singles! Max Getz, guitarist for One Year Later, tells Fig® what’s up with the band and his Lancaster experience. The final masters are in for album #2! It was written over the last two years as they toured in support of their debut. Max says, “We couldn’t be happier with how this album turned out!” The video for the song “Twisted Tongues” should be up and running by March. Having toured the USA and Canada, Max is appreciative for the positive response at all the stops. He is particularly impressed by the actual city of Montreal, as well as the “home away from home” feel in markets like Wisconsin and Nebraska. When away he misses his girlfriend, family, friends, and the comfort Lancaster brings. Here at WXPN, we’re fortunate to have a wealth of musical talent right in our own backyard. From big international stars like The Roots, Melody Gardot, and Man Man, to emerging artists like The Lawsuits, The Stray Birds, and Kingsfoil, we’re immersed in great local music. And as a membersupported radio station, we are able to introduce our audiences to these artists on the ground floor. If you tuned in to the station in 2003, you might have heard Helen Leicht spinning this unsigned guy with a soulful voice named Amos Lee. In 2007, we threw a free show with a scruffy indie rock band called Dr. Dog. In her Voices column here in Fig®, Helen Leicht told you about The Districts from Lititz—they just signed a record deal with national label Fat Possum. Every weekday XPN features her Philly Local Pick of the Day (1 PM), live performances during the Leicht Lunch at Noon, and on Tuesday nights (8-10 PM) Helen Leicht kicks off the Philly Local show at 8 PM, with myself acting as co-host for the 9 PM hour. I’m John Vettese, editor of The Key, WXPN’s blog covering the local music community. We review concerts and albums, bring you music news, and most importantly, produce The Key Studio Sessions.

The weekly series brings local artists into XPN studios for a live performance that airs on the radio and online with photos, video, and downloadable MP3s. To date, we’ve recorded more than 150 artists in a wide spectrum of genres, from folk to funk, hip-hop to punk, and roots to rock & roll. Beyond the airwaves and the web, XPN has a strong presence in the region’s music community. Leicht works with local artists on the Musicians On Call program and other charitable efforts; the WXPN Welcomes team sets up shop at many concerts by local and regional performers; and each year at our XPoNential Music Festival, we give several emerging local artists the chance to perform for thousands of music fans at Wiggins Park in Camden, and tens of thousands more who tuned in to the festival broadcast on XPN. GIVING BACK every good superhero has an alter

ego. The day job is the daily persona that masks their true superhero status. The night job involves saving the world. For John Gerdy, it’s hard to tell the two apart. His night job— electrifying audiences as delta-blues singer Willie Marble. His day job—saving the world one musical instrument at a time. But don’t try to ask him about his superhero status— like any true superhero, he’ll never take the credit he deserves. John Gerdy started off as most musicians do, humbly in high school strumming the strings of a guitar, trying to carry a tune. Flash forward to 2006: a stay-at-home dad of two, and as his children grew so did the amount of time on his hands. Cue the abrupt

cuts to music-education programs that were occurring in a faltering economy. Pair that with an abundance of available research citing the immeasurable impact of music as an educational and community-building tool —and just like that John sprang into action.

including more than 1,600 instruments with which students can create musical magic, and places between 12 and 22 pianos on the streets of Lancaster each summer. All of this stands as a testament to the uniting power of music.

With the mantra, “think globally, act locally,” he established Music For Everyone based on the premise that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the benefits of music. Beginning humbly with one small fundraiser that raised $7,000, Music For Everyone began to change the City.

John believes he couldn’t have accomplished all of this without the people around him, particularly his wife, Follin. He jokes that his musical achievements are based solely on playing alongside more talented musicians, and that Music For Everyone is a testament to the enduring generosity of the people of Lancaster. John Gerdy is the super-humble, super-talented, and super-dedicated modern day superhero that this great city needs.

FRESH FACE REology lancaster’s re-makers For DIY-er Erica Horning, the entrepreneurial spirit runs in her veins—literally. As a child she spent countless afternoons playing at her family’s laminating business, scrounging up scraps of remnant paper, finding a way to create art.

Now this fascination with the reclaimable has grown into the idea of REology—a design studio where you can artfully up-cycle while spending time with friends. With the help of a family friend, Cheryl Dennis, Erica left her day job as an elementary school teacher to start this venture. Having a background in business and design, the innovative Cheryl was the perfect partner to join this journey. Brave ambitions in heart and paintbrushes in hand, the duo officially opened REology’s doors in September 2013. Here they provide you with the supplies, tools, and instructions— just use your hands to build, and mind to reimagine; repurpose; renew. During REology’s Paint Workshop, you can “breathe new life into forgotten treasures” via a fresh coat of paint. At this hands-on workshop, students learn the basic techniques of applying Chalk Paint Powder and Milk Paint—both of which can be purchased in store for take-home adventures. Or you might try attending a Studio Social. These workshops, inspired by Pinterest, feature a variety of themes, and you will get to choose one of three unique project ideas to bring to life. For example, at Urban Funk Erica and Cheryl explain how to up-cycle city finds, like creating a chandelier out of a bike rim. married to the music For better or for worse, for richer or for poorer —we know this familiar phrase as part of the vows that couples promise to one another on their wedding day. But these words might also be tattooed on the heart of every musician as a commitment to a life of pursuing a passion that isn’t always a dream. For better or for worse, as an artist you’re married to the music. Matt and Nissa McCarthy know this well. These two just wrapped up a busy year. As a couple, they declared their vows on November 9th. As the band 3 West, they played more than 200 shows in the greater New York area and officially solidified themselves as a premier cover act. Their journey thus far had been mostly for the better.

What did the duo do next? Suitcases in tow, the newlyweds hopped on a train with a one-way ticket destined for Lancaster, PA. Their friends didn’t get it. They asked, “Why Lancaster?” and Matt and Nissa laughed like they had a secret. They knew something that their friends didn’t know, something that we already understand. They knew that the City of Lancaster is not just a dot on a map. They knew that Lancaster is a place where creative culture flows freely; a place where the music scene thrives and local artists are embraced; a place where they could get back to the heart of their music. The duo has already perfected the art of the acoustic cover. With Matt on guitar and Nissa’s powerful vocals, they can take any pop tune from the radio and mold it into a reimagined masterpiece. But in Lancaster they want to focus on finding their true voice: expressing themselves through original material. So here they are, looking for a chance to share this newfound voice in an unfamiliar city. They’ve already made appearances on NBC morning shows, the Rachael Ray show, and played at the top of Rockefeller Center in New York City—and now they’re ready to perform at a local restaurant, bar, or private event near you. Lancaster County barns, he brings new life to old timber. With styles ranging from modern to rustic, he consistently turns out artistic and innovative pieces—all without a staff behind him.
