As the agrarian epicenter of the East Coast, Lancaster’s fertile farmlands are known to yield some of the best produce in the nation. But the only thing better than the local harvest at our fingertips is what the chefs of Lancaster are doing with it. In the wake of the city’s cultural renaissance are innovative cooks taking full advantage of the best crops in the nation—and not feeling guilty about it for a single minute.

Chefs at Lancaster’s urban eateries source local meat and produce to create dishes that tempt the palate, pairing unexpected textures and flavors. Lancastrians faithfully frequent historic Lancaster Central Market, creating a rich tradition in the city of loving local and bringing fresh into their homes. Every day, we’re biting into the juiciest tomatoes; we’re savoring the ripest berries; we’re nourishing our bodies, and enjoying every bite.

Fig® Lancaster is solely supported by local businesses & organizations. Join us in creating a thriving downtown. Shop local this spring and all year round.

The next time you’re shopping your favorite downtown boutiques—stop in at a corner cafe, enjoy a sit-down meal of contemporary cuisine, or grab some local goodness for a picnic in Musser Park. The presence of Lancaster’s rolling farmlands might not be seen in the historic character of brick-faced row homes lining city streets, but it is surely tasted. Meet the entire creative and talented team who make Fig® possible at figlancaster.com.

LISA BALACI

Owner of Charlotte Shoppe

LISA BALACI adopts a head-to-toe philosophy

when it comes to style. Start with the shoes, where comfort is key. Then, dress to impress. And finally, accessorize with flare. Now, Lisa hopes to bring her vision of stylish comfort to the energetic streets of Lancaster—from Charlotte Shoppe’s new home in The Shops at Hager. When Lisa opened the first Charlotte Shoppe in 2005, she had just retired her scrubs from a career as a pediatric nurse. With a keen understanding of tired feet, she wanted to bring

shoes that were stylish in design, but still treated the feet kindly. That philosophy then grew into clothing and accessories, where she always looks for the softest fabrics and most flattering designs.

Lisa’s clientele enter Charlotte Shoppe to find comfortable style, and what they also find is comfort in Lisa’s welcoming personality. She values personal connection, telling us, “In Internet retail, you lose touch with your customers. Here, we remember your name.

We greet you with warmness. We help you personally find the right item.” And for Lisa, it’s that personal touch that turns customers into regulars, and regulars into friends. For a flattering outfit from head to toe, head to Charlotte Shoppe—where Lisa combines comfort and style to make you feel at home. Stop in to meet Lisa and her helpful team of associates: Melissa, Cheryl, and Kathy.

FRESH IS REFRESHING The sweet scent of a backyard BBQ wafts through the air. A cherry pie bakes in the oven; its aroma fills the kitchen, spilling out to the yard through open windows. A pitcher of homemade lemonade made from vivid yellow lemons replenishes friends and family. The sound of roaring laughter floats through the sky as the sun shines and children run barefoot in the backyard. But before all of that—a trip to Lancaster Central Market to pick up the freshest local goodies for your afternoon cookout. Flavors rise to their full potential on the grill. And now that it’s the season of sundresses and sandals, it’s the perfect time to journey down city streets to Market. Renée Morth in Binn’s Park in Downtown Lancaster.

ALL OF LANCASTER IS A STAGE Shakespeare once told us “all the world’s a stage,” and Renée Morth took it to heart. As founder and creator of ARK Acting Studio, Renée has set the stage to share her passion with the world—starting right here in Lancaster.

Beginning in second grade, Renée fell in love with the theatre. She’d carry this love with her throughout life, receiving a BFA in acting from Tisch School of Arts, then a Masters in educational theatre from NYU. Relentlessly practicing her craft, Renée would stay in New York City for ten more years. As a member of Actors’ Equity Association, she performed with children’s theatres, and toured Europe with two German acting companies, where she sung in productions

of Grease and The Rocky Horror Show. She even spent a year in South Korea with a startup that used theatre to help students learn the English language.

Then seven years ago, her winding path led her back to Lancaster, where she settled down at Lancaster Country Day School to teach middle and high school theatre. Since then, Renée has continued to inspire her students, sharing her talents and nurturing confidence in young actors and actresses.

It is a holistic approach. We’re focused on aiding in the development of the total person.”

Standing for Artistic Revelation through Kindness, ARK intends to create a safe environment—for both children and adults—where you can express yourself freely and experience your own revelation. It’s not about the stardom—but you’ll never know your own star-power until you release it.

Now she is taking another leap and opening ARK Acting Studio at Liberty Place, with her passion for teaching in tow. ARK was founded on the principle that there is a creative soul within each of us that needs a bit of encouragement. “I believe that anyone can act, and that’s what the studio is about. 313 West Liberty Street, Suite 238 717.490.3516 arkactingstudio.com 9

giving back

As a child, Srirupa Dasgupta listened to her

grandparents share their stories of resettlement during one of the largest mass displacements in modern history—the 1947 division of India and Pakistan. Her paternal grandmother spoke of loss, as she and her family lost everything as refugees. Her maternal grandmother spoke of hope, as she found purpose in aiding refugees through the turbulent process of resettlement. So in 2008, when Sri listened to Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus speak on the concept of social enterprise—using business practices to solve a social issue—she was poised to take action. After noticing the large settlement of refugees right here in Lancaster, she made it her purpose to find a way to create a social enterprise that would aid in the resettlement and integration of refugees into the city. And so Upohar Catering was born.

Meaning “gift” in Bengali, Upohar was established to give the gift of opportunity to refugee women. Sri tells us, “Moving here, these women can’t do what they used to do because of the language barrier—but they can cook.” So with food standing as the cultural medium for understanding, Sri offered several women a job with her newly created catering company. Because Sri pays them living wages, the women are able to support their family and slowly integrate into American culture, learning the language while sharing their traditional native recipes.

As Sri began to notice a growing need to provide more consistent work schedules, she decided to take the leap and open Upohar as a full-service restaurant at 240 West Roseville Road. “These people are my inspiration. They’ve lost it all, and still the human spirit has enough to start again. And if they can start over, I can do this restaurant.” With a rotating menu, featuring dishes from Iraq, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nepal, and Bangladesh, Sri gives each woman a chance to share her story through cooking. Sometimes it’s a story of great loss—but thanks to Sri, it’s a story of great hope, too.

Learn more about Upohar on page 49, as part of our summer food feature, and at UpoharEthnicCuisines.com.

fresh face A FRESH SPACE FOR A FAMILIAR FACE In 2004, owners and creative architects Bruce and Kathy Terkeltaub opened what would become Lancaster’s favorite urban boutique: Festoon. After ten years of stylish success, they’re expanding once again— and this time to a 3,500 square-foot store space on Duke Street.

As a former firehouse, Festoon’s new home is a testament to the cultural character of the city. With towering ceilings and expansive windows scaling the entrance, when you enter the new Festoon you’re likely to be left breathless. “It’s about an experience,

an emotion, excitement,” Kathy shares of her vision. Her design intends to be both beautiful and purposeful, as she hand selects each detail of the store with thoughtful regard for the client.

And for Kathy, it’s all about knowing the client—a skill that she has perfected throughout more than 30 years in the fashion and design industry. From working as a fashion illustrator for the original Hager Department Store to being a floral designer at her own avant-garde flower shop, each step along her path to Duke Street has given her a unique understanding of the industry.

Festoon has already established itself as one of the foremost boutiques in the Lancaster. Now with even larger goals in reach, Festoon continues to grow. With an expanded selection of home goods, personal care, clothing, and cards, Festoon is making a name for itself beyond the boundaries of the city. “Lancaster is ready for this kind of anchor store. It will give people a reason to come here from anywhere.” Experience Festoon’s new location at 202 North Duke Street, opening June 23!

crafting a vision

“My entire life revolves around a great customer experience. From start to finish, Gallagher & Sons Construction built a store in three months! It’s a pleasure doing business with someone who cares about your business as much as you do.” – BARBARA BIDDING, TAUPE OWNER 22 21 North Charlotte Street 717.299.6670 gallagherandsons.com

fresh face Barb Bidding, Owner Liz Baley, Sales Associate

THE ART OF STYLE STARTS HERE TAUPE. It’s a color that’s sophisticated and understated. It complements almost any attire. “There’s nothing better than a black outfit with TAUPE,” owner Barb Bidding tells us, “There’s nothing like walking down 5th Avenue in New York City and seeing a stylish woman walk past.” Barb is determined to bring this fashion to the streets of Lancaster, combining that New York elegance with Los Angeles style, and throwing in a bit of European flair for good measure. And when Barb puts her mind to it, you can bet she’ll achieve it.

As the former general manager of Mercedes Benz, Lancaster, Barb combines her go-

getter attitude with a love of accessorizing— from cars to clothing. Her experience as a leader in sales taught her an important lesson; her business is only as strong as the team she stands beside. With that in mind, she called her “right-hand-girl” Liz Baley to join the team. Liz has long had an eye for the fashionable. After teaching for 30 years—every day in fabulous fashion—Barb finally gave her the opportunity she’d been waiting for. Together, the duo hopped on a train to New York to collect the first pieces for their spring collection. What they came back with was a newfound appreciation for the fashion industry, the latest trends to dress

the women of Lancaster, and a fortified bond as the closest friends.

For Barb and Liz, TAUPE is all about the art of style. There’s an art to dressing well, and being able to dress someone else is a refined talent, which Barb understands better than ever. “You have to be able to see it to put it on someone else, buy the right styles, and know your client inside and out. And that’s what TAUPE does best.” Located in Champion Forge, TAUPE is the perfect destination location. Spend an hour at hot yoga, get a manicure, grab some gourmet cuisine, and stop by TAUPE—where sophisticated style awaits.

bottling lancaster county goodness Lancaster County is nationally renowned as a hub for the agrarian community. With fertile soil for the tilling, Lancaster’s reputation among foodies everywhere stands as home to the best produce in the country. And with its central location along the East Coast, food producers and food eaters alike see opportunity in Lancaster’s bucolic countryside. In 2008, brothers Mike and Mark Thompson and Scott Goldsmith saw this opportunity. And the ending to one food-producing company marked the beginning of the current Lancaster Fine Foods. Of course, it wasn’t all a simple stroke of serendipity. Lancaster Fine Foods was founded upon a core set of values which still hold true: the passion for helping small food producers create the best sauces, spreads, and dips, the passion for supporting artisanal culture in the food industry, and the support of loyal employees who are dedicated to these causes.

Today, Lancaster Fine Foods works with everyone from local small-batch chefs to celebrities and international clients to produce, package, and distribute food products all from one facility. They stand as partners to their clients, helping them perfect their recipes and take them from the kitchen to the market. You’ll find these products in local farmer’s markets and in large-scale retailers. On the following pages are the stories of three producers who have stood with Lancaster Fine Foods, watched them grow, and grew alongside them. Read on to learn more about Cortazzo Foods, Harrowgate Fine Foods, and Miller’s Mustard.

CORTAZZO FOODS As an executive chef, Scott Martino knows a thing or two about cooking. So one afternoon in 2005, when Scott had an abundance of extra tomatoes, he put them to good use. Using his grandmother’s recipe for tomatobased pasta sauce, he canned a batch of sauce for his friends. Naturally, the sauce was a hit. Friends started requesting it more often and in larger quantities. Eventually demand grew so high, he rented a kitchen for his venture. Then demand grew even too high for that, so he sought the help of Lancaster Fine Foods. Scott’s first production was a small $800 order for Stauffer’s Supermarkets. Three years later, Cortazzo Foods has expanded to five different products, which you can find all over the country, in Canada, and soon in South America. Scott thanks Lancaster Fine Foods for their part in his success, “they were growing and they had a vision for me to grow, too.”

HARROWGATE FINE FOODS After growing up in South Africa, Ron and Cecille Steele found themselves craving the traditional foods of their English upbringing—especially the English curd. Then one Christmas they decided to whip up a batch of lemon curd as presents for their friends and family. Everyone quickly returned with empty jars and requests for more.

Ron and Cecille found that many of the imported lemon curds in the market weren’t true to their traditional character. Their goal was to make a lemon curd that had great taste, great texture, and could be produced in larger quantities. After years of trial and error, Curdelicious was perfected.

In 2005, Ron and Cecille took their lemon curd to Lancaster Fine Foods for production. With their help, Curdelicious expanded their brand to Harrowgate Fine Foods—producing various flavored curds, marmalades, and scones. You can now find their flavorful spreads and scones in more than 500 outlets in the U.S.

MILLER’S MUSTARD Every Labor Day weekend, Don Miller and his son would gather in the kitchen to make batches of an old family mustard recipe. His son, a student at Penn State, would then return to college and share their mustard with friends. And everyone loved it.

After Don retired, his son encouraged him to start selling their mustard. With some prodding, Don finally decided to go for it. In their first week, they produced 3,000 jars of Miller’s Mustard. For the first two years of production, they continued to work from their home kitchen, until in 2004 when they teamed with Lancaster Fine Foods.

Working with Lancaster Fine Foods helped Miller’s Mustard continue to grow. In 2010, they were named condiment of the year by the Scovie Awards. They ship to South Korea and Japan, where the mustard is used with sushi. Last fall they shipped to Germany, arriving just in time for the brats and brews of Oktoberfest. And now they have more than 800 retailers in the United States alone.

THINK BACK. What were you doing when you

were fourteen years old? Probably just entering high school, chasing around your latest crush, and the biggest stress was the Biology test of the week. Now meet Sean Bruce. When Sean was six years old, he started selling candy. At seven, he started speaking at local basketball camps. At ten and eleven, he sold cologne and dog treats and solidified his position in the family business, Lancaster Hummus Co.

Now at fourteen years old, Sean is starting his own business, helping the homeless, and simply out-doing all of us. Known to fans as Sean “The Gourmet” Bruce, Sean works with a team of mentors and business leaders to perform cooking demos on stage, on tv, and in front of live audiences. From celebrity chefs to local leaders, Sean and his team have big goals. But one of his most important goals is helping the homeless.

Sean remembers, “Since I was five, I would walk down the street and see homeless people in need. They’re on the streets looking up to people, talking, and no one is listening.” At thirteen, he was struck by the simple thought: why not? So, he established Brothers Through Christ. “The reason I did it was because I said I could do it. I started making phone calls—called politicians, called businesses, everybody I knew at the time.” Soon he raised the funds, got two local food trucks involved, and headed to Philadelphia. “We served 300 meals that day, helped 300 people, and got 300 hugs.” To learn more or get involved, connect with Sean on Twitter @TheGourmetBruce or #AskSeanBruce.

S UMMER REFRESHMENT: Menno Tea

The founders of Menno Tea set out to brew a f lavorful tea inspired by a Lancaster family recipe. Their Mennonite heritage had grounded in them a set of values to guide their practice: simplicity, community, and sustainability. Their recipe would be simple, but full in taste. They would commit to giving back to the community. And they would cultivate a sustainable relationship with the land to produce only the purest and most wholesome tea.

Unsatisfied with bland health-food products, 22-year-old Lancaster native Leif Arnesen launched the transparent organic snack company, Biré Organics (pronounced bee-RAY). Beginning with the company’s first product line, organic chocolate-dipped fruit truffles —more affectionately called “Chomps,” Leif seeks to make healthy eating taste as good as it feels. When you first bite into a Chomp, it’s quite likely you’ll get hooked. But like Leif says, Chomps are “A Good Thing To Crave!”

LOCAL SPIRIT: Thistle F inch

Calling back to the late nights and speakeasies of Prohibition, last Christmas Eve local Andrew Martin opened the first distillery in Lancaster since the 1920s. This small batch White Rye Whiskey is not barrel aged—hence the uncommon coloring. (Although there are plans to release aged spirits in the future.) It was a hit from first taste—for the proof just look around town. You’ll find it being sipped in local restaurants, where you can drink it straight or in an innovative cocktail.

it’s all about the music

68 figlancaster.com

A soft wind graces your cheek. A ray of sunlight kisses your skin. An emotion grabs ahold of you, tightening around your heart. And suddenly, inspiration arises, flowing from pen to paper. At least, that’s how it happens for singer and songwriter Leticia Joy.

With an appreciation for the simple beauty of nature, Leticia expresses herself through unadorned melodies that allow her honest lyrics to shine. Her voice acts as the messenger of a true story; the story—her own. And when she steps on stage to share it, she’s not just sharing her music; she’s baring her soul. “Before every show, I’m a small bit terrified,” she relinquishes. “It’s not about messing up or doing everything perfectly. It’s scary to be so real and vulnerable in front of other people. They’re not just songs; they’re me.” Penning her most recent album was a heart-opening experience for Leticia. A candid picture of heartbreak, sorrow, and the glimmer of hope seen through the light, Oeuvre’s poetic lyrics take listeners on a journey. “Hope was seen, but I wasn’t yet living in it.” Now in the process of writing her next album, Leticia continues on her personal journey—this time focusing on the expression of hope she’s finally living in, and the new revelations about life and love she’s reached. With a voice that soothes at the same time as it provokes, when listening to Leticia Joy you might find yourself searching within. You might feel something you’ve never felt. And you just might find something you never knew you were looking for. Listen to the tracks of Oeuvre and order a copy of the EP at leticiajoy.com. Because of generous donors, this spring we partnered with the Lancaster County Council of Churches to establish a local Food Hub that will distribute fresh produce to low-income families across our community. an artist, an economist, and a sommelier walk into a bar... (as was often the case for longtime friends Jonathan Yeager, Adam Ozimek, and Chris Trendler). And after a few too many bad jokes and craft beers, an idea dawned on them—Joycat.

Joycat is a Lancaster-based events company and the host of the best party this city saw in 2013. With more than 34 breweries represented, 70 beers for the tasting, and 2,100 tickets sold in advance, the 2013 Lancaster Craft Beerfest was a huge success.

Now in their second year, Joycat promises that the 2014 Lancaster Craft Beerfest will be even bigger and better. More beer. More food. More music. And more beer after that. The Lancaster Craft Beerfest is just the beginning of Joycat’s creative adventures. The City of Lancaster is on the rise, and they have plans to continue the celebration. Cheers, Lancaster!

fresh face STYLE COMES NATURALLY Introducing the freshest faces on Queen Street, with perfect hair to match: the ladies of Bristle & Prim—primped and primed to style the streets of Lancaster. Whether it’s a visit to the blow dry bar, keratin treatment, extensions, or a simple cut and color, owner Dana Paparo and her team are ready, scissors in hand.

“We strongly believe in individual style and keeping a creative atmosphere for both client and stylist,” Dana shares of her philosophy.

And in opening Bristle & Prim, Dana wanted to wholly embrace that by creating a salon with an atmosphere that is a reflection of her own personal style. Now Bristle & Prim has opened its doors, with an urban atmosphere that pays tribute to her love for the natural and pure.

“Being so close to Lancaster Central Market, we wanted to incorporate the historic character and also the organic, local culture it represents.” So Dana and her team set to model her salon around that precept, starting

from the eco-friendly dark wood floors that complement the raw Lancaster County recycled barn wood adorning the walls. Even the hair that falls to the floor gains purpose, as it’s donated to an organization that uses it to clean up oil spills. Make an appointment and settle into the rustic elegance at Bristle & Prim. Sink into a plush leather chair. Relish a relaxing scalp massage. And let Stylists Dana Paparo, Brittany Burkholder, and Elly Karpouzis showcase the natural beauty in you.

BRINGING INTERNATIONAL TALENT DOWNTOWN With vastly different life experiences, cultural backgrounds, and career paths, Dr. Xun Pan and Dr. Jeffrey Hardin don’t have much in common. But after they met many years ago, they bonded over the one language that everyone speaks—music. And then, after noticing a gap in the musical scene in Lancaster, Dr. Pan and Dr. Hardin founded the International Piano Festival to educate pianists to bridge cultural divides—just as it had done for them in friendship.

Now, for the past three years, they’ve been bringing elite caliber pianists from around the world to participate in the Lancaster International Piano Festival. The festival was founded with three pillars to uphold it: the principle of education, the art of performance, and the creation of cultural awareness. Internationally renowned pianists from around the world join in this piano conclave, where they receive ten days of master classes and training. They perform concerts in Millersville’s unparalleled Ware and Winter Centers, as well as in retirement homes and hospitals. And most importantly, the pianists experience cultural immersion, taking with them new perspectives when they leave. Dr. Hardin reflects on its power, “Music can only be enjoyed in a social context; it’s a language. If you’re born and raised in Turkey and you meet people from China, you realize the social context for the music is different. Interpretation of the piece is different. It improves you as a musician; you take it with you to Turkey. And suddenly there are connections across the globe.”

A concert pianist himself, Dr. Pan urges the people of Lancaster to come share these musical moments. “I would challenge you to watch; the pianists will exceed your expectations.” So much more than just the art of classical piano, the Festival brings people together, broadens cultural horizons, and empowers both pianists and listeners alike in new experiences.

Dr. Hardin, Dr. Pan, and the LIPF board of directors would like say thank you to the following people for their endless support and encouragement: Dr. Francine McNairy, Dr. John Anderson, Dr. Diane Zimmerman Umble, Dr. Mícheál B. Houlahan, and Mr. Jerry Eckert

gaudenzia/ vantage

When women first enter treatment at Gaudenzia, it is emphasized that completing the program is just the beginning of their path to long-term recovery. Graduation is the goal of the women completing treatment at Gaudenzia’s Lancaster programs. To graduate, one must complete a program and then fulfill the criteria, which includes one year of sobriety, volunteering in the community, employment and/or enrollment in an education program, residing in clean housing, and having a sponsor. Women who graduate often return to our programs as employees or volunteers. Graduates Evone, Barbara, and Sheri epitomize Gaudenzia’s core concept of the role model: they are productive, working members of the Lancaster community and share their passion and skills as they work with the women and children of Vantage every day.

COMMUNITY SUPPORTER

WHEN FACED WITH AN INJURY,

there’s a certain kind of surgeon you need. You need a firm stance and a steady hand. You need a voice you can trust. You need guidance to understand. You need a coach. Dr. Christopher Kager of Lancaster Neuroscience & Spine Associates is just that — a coach you can count on.

With six children, Dr. Kager has done his share of coaching. From baseball to basketball, football, and lacrosse, he’s lent his leadership skills to Manheim Township, where he showed his true character as an exemplary coach. Similarly, his colleagues and patients view him as a leader in the medical f ield, delivering

a coach you can count on patient-focused care with precision, skill, and dedication.

Dr. Kager’s hands are as experienced as they are steady. He’s performed more than 4,000 surgeries, with a focus in simple to complex spine procedures, including disc herniations, artificial disc replacement, spinal fusions, spinal tumors and brain tumors, carpal tunnel, ulnar nerve surgery, and more.

They’re people with families to care for, lawns to mow, and other everyday responsibilities we are all too familiar with. Often, injuries may result from the strain of hard work throughout the years. But with Dr. Kager coaching, and the help of his teammates at Lancaster Neuroscience, you know that you’ll receive the most comprehensive care— with a game plan that leads you to your fullest potential.

Most of the patients Dr. Kager treats are what he calls, “weekend warriors.”
