My favorite thing about Lancaster is the entrepreneurial spirit of the people who live here—the creativity and perceptiveness they possess. There’s a striking originality and contentedness to the people you meet downtown. People here are happy. There’s no denying that our capacity for happiness, our roots, run deep. At Fig®, we believe that the seeds of happiness can be found throughout the City. They’re scattered inside art galleries, revealing vibrant beauty through imagination. They blow along city sidewalks, and into coffee shops and specialty boutiques. Some seeds are planted inside churches and synagogues— sprouting revelation, strength, and hope. As we embark on our 10th year of showcasing the best of art, culture, shopping, dining, and living in Lancaster, we decided to start our own happiness project. We want to encourage people to continue to be kind, remind them why they fell in love with the City, and grow a strong community that thrives and produces good things—a homegrown goodness of kinship, reciprocity, and altruism. We are proud to launch the LancHappy Project with our partners and sponsors. We’re excited to learn what makes you happy. What we’ve discovered so far? Happiness is finding a balance of the mind, body, and spirit. There is no boundary between you and me; what happens to you, happens to me. This mindfulness of the interconnectedness in all things links to what is good inside of each of us; it’s tied to what it is we believe we can give— it’s etched into us. Service to others is one of the simplest ways to create happiness. And in those spaces where happiness is needed most, we can shape the void by gathering round. Happiness is a choice. We hope you’ll join us in choosing to remember that what you find is often a product of what you’re looking for. If you search for what is good— you will find it.
deborah brandt & the moxie house team Thank you to our editorial sponsor, the High® Companies. Committed to community leadership, sustainable building and business practices, and advancement through the preservation of local heritage.

WELLNESS ON WALNUT
the body thrives when the mind is well. That motto captures the essence of Wellness on Walnut. As an integrative health center, it encompasses services ranging from acupuncture and chiropractic care to massage therapy and mental health. Wellness on Walnut provides opportunities for clients to feel empowered about their emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical health— and all in one great location. Co-owners Susanne Umiker Spurlock and Dr. Leah Reiff are excited to share such a unified and holistic approach with Lancaster. After spending more than 30 years in the mental health field, Susanne’s education, training, and decades of experience as a clinical
social worker and psychotherapist have given her a foundation for successfully coaching her clients to a happier and healthier state of mind. As a Life & Wellness Counselor, “I most enjoy challenging my clients to identify the lack of balance in their lives, in a spirit of compassion, humor, fun, honesty, and trust. I’m here to help them achieve a more dynamic life,” Susanne says. Additionally, Ryan McGinnis is also a part of Wellness on Walnut. He provides a spiritual, Christ-centered approach— gently counseling both individuals and couples. Chiropractor Dr. Leah Reiff helps people get pain-free and function better than ever—without drugs or surgery.
“People say, ‘I wish I would have done this sooner; I didn’t think there was anything I could do about it.’” Dr. Leah is happy to provide a relaxed and holistic environment, and patients love the massage chairs—which are perfect after chiropractic adjustments. Maintaining your health and happiness has never been easier, or more convenient. Wellness on Walnut is a comprehensive destination for everything wellness related—for the mind, body, and spirit. ........................................................ Join Wellness on Walnut for an Open House on Friday, March 20, from 5 – 8 pm.

Owner and Chef Rob Garpstas in Root’s raw space. Open 7 days a week and serving Sunday Brunch!
fresh face: root lancaster is ready for its very
first vegan restaurant! Root is located on West Walnut Street, planted inside the old Wacker Brewing Co. building—a symbol of Lancaster’s rich heritage and homage to a community that promotes freedom, values, and good spirits. “We’re taking traditional bar and pub food and making it vegan,” says owner and chef Rob Garpstas. Both strict vegans and vegetarians are delighted with many satisfying options—pleasantly surprised by delicious appetizers like calamari, stuffed peppers, and a mouthwatering trifecta of meatballs, crab cakes, and corn black bean burgers. Obvious choices like salads and pizzas feature fresh and
16 223 west walnut street
local seasonal ingredients to flavor. Entrees include vegetable ravioli, mac and cheese, and a surefire favorite: the riblet sandwich. Beer enthusiasts can enjoy twelve beers on tap. Exposed brick walls enhance both bar and casual dining. “I’m keeping everything as raw as possible,” he says. Root takes its design cues from architecture that’s both urban and industrial while still natural and earthy. It’s modern meets Zen. “Root was something that was about new beginnings and the strength of something that has grabbed hold of my life and extended through my family,” Rob says. His conversion to veganism happened
only after his father was diagnosed with cancer. After much research, and reading The China Study, a book about the relationship between the consumption of animal products, including dairy, and chronic illnesses like coronary heart disease, cancers, and diabetes, Rob and his family decided to transition to a vegan diet. “I went through the process with my dad and after fourteen days I felt rejuvenated, clean, and better. So I adopted this way of life,” he says. What about meat eaters? “I’d say give it a try,” he says with a smile. With affordable prices and an unpretentious attitude, it’ll be easy to convince people that the food is good—and good for them too.

LANCASTER, OUR ROME rachel dawson, US women’s national field hockey team
Something was missing. Only it wasn’t a thing, it was a place, the place that would give us a sense of power, purpose, and possibility. For a year we’d been drifting, meandering from training camp to training camp with nowhere to call home, surviving as best we could the uncertain winds of change. Our new leader, Craig Parnham, stood before us, his eyes dancing in the gleam of a photo projected on the wall of a makeshift hotel meeting room in Rio Di Janeiro, Brazil. “Who recognizes this ancient building?” Curious nods filled the room. “This is the Colosseum,” he said, pausing dramatically. “Every great movement, civilization, team, needs a Colosseum—a place to call home, to identify with, to discover and launch themselves from.”
Front row: Michelle Kasold, Katie O’Donnell, Lauren Crandall, Julia Reinprecht, Stefanie Fee, Jackie Briggs, Jamie Montgomery, Rayell Heistand; Back row: Melissa Gonzalez, Michelle Vittese, Kat Sharkey, Alesha Widdall, Katie Reinprecht, Rachel Dawson, Katelyn Falgowski, Kesley Kolojejchick, Lauren Pfieffer, Paige Selesnki, Ali McEvoy, Jill Witmer, Hannah Prince, Caitlin Van Sickle
As he spoke, a new photo appeared, a massive, impeccably outfitted, industrialesque sports complex. “...And we’ve found ours. Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.”
WE’VE REAWAKENED TO NEW PURPOSE, DISCOVERED A NEW SENSE OF SELF.
Two Years Later, inspired by the culture of Lancaster and its people, whose values, like our own, root themselves in the potent triad of creative passion, authenticity, and discipline, we’ve reawakened to a new purpose, discovered a new sense of self.
Who are we? We are the US Women’s National Field Hockey team—a team of 30 ordinary women who, on days away from the field, indulge in Lancaster’s many local treasures. We walk our dogs at Beau’s Dream Dog Park, drink coffee at Prince Street Cafe, do yoga at Evolution Power Yoga, catch tunes at Tellus360, and, yes, we occasionally enjoy the luxury of a donut from Central Market. We want to change the game of field hockey. Play it faster, more fluidly, more powerfully than the world has ever seen. We want to redefine the standard, push it to a higher level, transform perceptions, and invigorate our sport with a new and vibrant energy. We are ordinary women on an extraordinary mission.
Dr. Kathryne Stabile of Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster (OAL) treats a team member. OAL is Central Pennsylvania’s premier orthopedic surgery practice. They are the official team physicians for the US Women’s National Field Hockey Team at the Spooky Nook Sports complex.
Some say it’s a daunting vision. We think it’s exhilarating. It’s big, it’s bold, it’s different. That is what makes it so inspiring. It’s why we show up every morning, humbled by our task, sticks to the turf, willing to engage ourselves fully in the rigorous, uncomfortable, monotonous grind of Olympic sport. And oddly, that grind fulfills us; it makes us happy, because deep down we know we are growing stronger from each challenging moment. Here in Lancaster we are building something special. We are crafting a legacy. This place isn’t simply our home, it’s become our Rome.

your love story NATURAL ROMANTIC ARTISTIC
We met each other in a motorcycle accident in the mountains of West Virginia. Ever since then, our lives have been one crazy adventure after another. Now, as a husband and wife wedding photography team, it’s these adventures that fuel our passion and excitement for hearing and documenting the unique story that each couple has to tell. This goes far beyond the gear we use or how we compose a photo, this is friendship at its core. This means getting to know you as a couple, and portraying that for the world to see. It’s all about your story, we are just the storytellers.

MARTHA GOOD OF LANCASTER UNITY
names have power.
Martha Good should know. She’s a woman who believes we’re all capable of changing our community for the better— one good idea at a time. She believes in unity, in joining those who embrace cooperativeness and choose action over fear or apathy. Lancaster Unity was born out of these ideas. “One day I was walking my dog and I just noticed all this trash everywhere. I wanted to do something,” she says. After a Facebook post and several energized suggestions, one person recommended a cleanup. It was clear people wanted to become involved. “Our mission is to do community-building throughout

the city—through events and volunteer opportunities. Diversity is one of Lancaster’s greatest strengths and we want to incorporate everyone’s voice,” she says. So far, so good. The events have had tremendous success. Martha and her friends organized a trash cleanup day and participated in a mulching event. They also gathered together with 400 others and staged a Peace Walk throughout the downtown. It’s the kind of communitybuilding effort that can become both exquisitely purposeful and profoundly healing. The Lancaster City Alliance, Lancaster County Community Foundation, and other local organizations and businesses have all been very supportive.
Martha’s not out to save Lancaster or conquer the world. She just has a desire to serve as an agent of change. All that’s necessary to become a part of Lancaster Unity is a willingness to serve the community, meet your neighbors, and believe in the goodness we can achieve side by side. True power is about empowering others to inspire fruitful change. It means, in a deep and honest way, that the richness of unity and the vibrancy of altruism are the hallmarks of social good. Because the only thing better than greatness is, of course, goodness. The good news? Go to Lancaster Unity’s Facebook page for details on trash cleanup days, potluck dinners, events, and volunteer opportunities.

W E’RE IN PU R S U IT OF H APPIN ES S . The LancHappy Project is about ordinary people finding and creating happiness in the City of Lancaster. What do locals love? How do kindness and gratitude affect happiness and wellbeing of the mind, body, and spirit? We want to know. Our goal is simple: to make the City of Lancaster a happier and healthier place to be, to live, and to love. Through random acts of kindness and a pay-it-forward mentality, we want to think about happiness in terms of cultivating curiosity, performing acts of service, and creatively filling the city with an appreciation that ordinary people pursuing happiness leads to extraordinary things: better relationships and a stronger, more connected, community. We’re in pursuit of happiness and we know Lancaster will lead the way. CARRIE JOHNSON

HAPPY THOUGHTS “ I share happiness with a smile or a handshake or a hug. When you’re happy you feel warm and you want to share it.” –lori “ All the little things are really what makes a life. I think that happy has to do more with heart and understanding that if you think with your heart you make better choices. If you think with your heart you do nicer things.” –mimi “ We have an amazing built environment and wonderful people. This is my hometown and I’m fortunate to have a hand in shaping the future of this place through design of public spaces and also private spaces.” –john “ Something that makes me sad is seeing people live in poverty or be homeless or without a meal for their families or children. I mostly turn that sadness in my heart into motivation to do something about it. I take action to help them through Brothers Through Christ Ministries.” –sean “ My favorite thing about Lancaster is going to the art gallery [Friendship] to paint. I like doing different things with it, like doing flowers and cats and painting in circles.” –amy
“ Thinking positively helps you feel better. I think that your state of mind affects your health and your emotional wellbeing completely. Even if you smile, your body and your mind will feel better from the act of smiling. In other words, you can make the feeling follow the behavior. So just smiling sometimes when you’re not happy can turn that around for you. I think happiness is a state of mind and it’s good for your overall health.” –joan “ There were missions and food banks and people helping people, which is something that was foreign to me when I came here and one of the reasons why I stayed. I had no intention of staying here when I came, but I’ve been here for 8 years.” –james “ Happiness is peace. It’s joy. It’s love. It’s kindness. It’s a lot of things.” –sally “ I think people are happy when they are together—any time there is something social happening, or just feeling connected with one another. And I think food does that a lot. I think food allows people to gather and eat together and share stories and feel connected.” –pete
“ There are so many people [in Lancaster] who really believe in this community and love this community and want to do whatever they can do to contribute in a positive way to this community, to give.” –john “ I think that there is a choice involved with thinking positively. I think you can choose positive or negative. Positive is a lot easier to live with and it takes a lot less energy.” –linda “ The last time I was happy was when my mom got me a dog. Preta likes to play with people. And she likes to lick a lot.” –analuisa “ If you make someone else happy ...they might spread on the feeling to other people and it might keep spreading and then that person who you made happy might become friends with you. And he might become friends with other people. And the friends might start coming together by sharing happiness with each other.” –jack “ My favorite thing about Lancaster is that you don’t have to be worried and it’s a fun place to live and there are lots of parks. I like Long’s Park and Monster [Musser] Park.” –emily

“ Music has always been a very big part of my life. It’s what makes me happy. In Lancaster, 5 years ago, I started the Music For Everyone Community Chorus as a way to cultivate that happiness into the power of music. The most contagious thing about being in the choir is the spirit and the happiness that’s produced through it. I’m always very happy to share my happiness with people through what I love to do—which is music.” –aj

POETRY & CHAMBER FOLK SYMPATHY & THE LION is best described as
an alternative folk duo. Guitarist Michael Burke met cellist John Shavel on Craigslist. They have been playing as a duo for the last year and a half, performing as far away as Montreal and Santa Fe. They hope to play more local shows as they introduce their newest album Remnants. “It’s fragments from old notebooks. It’s the beginning; it’s a rebirth,” Michael says. Their music is pensive and understated. With a rural sensibility that’s accessible, it also incorporates a dramatic interest in transcendental storytelling. “We tend to weave a hint of sorrow into the music while the lyrics reach for triumph,” says Michael. He references el duende, which is the spirit of evocation. True to folk, this emotional or physical response to art is especially characteristic of the authenticity that comes from a culture of hardship. This heightened reality and powerful force lends itself perfectly to the band’s name— which is partially inspired by the preface to Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass.
RHYTHMS. NOT ALGORITHMS.
Music lovers will find similarities with Damien Rice, Iron & Wine, and Nick Drake. The richness of John’s cello and the passion in Michael’s voice evoke a sense of freedom. “We focus on playing for ourselves. We’re not necessarily trying to entertain anyone. Our music is a letting go. By putting it out there to the world, we try to attain a state of grace. Sometimes we make it there, sometimes we don’t,” says Michael. LISTEN ONLINE:

guess who’s back in town? Wheatland has opened for the season, tours are up and running, and President James Buchanan is back in town. And, reportedly, he’s been “Takin’ it to the Streets.” He’s been spotted dining, dancing, shopping, cruising around town in an old Jag convertible, even enjoying a glass of Madeira at a local pub. Please consider supporting these worthy causes. At Fig®, we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. For 2015, we have chosen three innovative nonprofits whose good works contribute immensely to our thriving, local community: Milagro House, A Week Away, and Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic. Please join us as we support these inspiring causes this year.

Milagro House has served the Lancaster Community since 1998 providing education, housing, and counseling to women and their children who are experiencing homelessness. They offer an on-site GED school taught by a certified teacher as well as a post-secondary track, and are the only organization in the community that offers homeless mothers the opportunity to further their education—a key ingredient to obtaining employment and providing a self-sustaining income. milagrohouse.org
The mission of A Week Away is to coordinate and finance respites for individuals and their loved ones who are dealing with a life-threatening illness. They can’t cure someone’s illness, but they can give them the hope to keep fighting. They take care of everything from travel expenses to medical care to lost wages.
Founded in 1938, the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic is the oldest clinic in the world devoted to the comprehensive care of children with clefts and other craniofacial differences. It also was the first to develop a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of patients with cleft lip and palate. Wider community support of the Clinic has always been necessary as they are committed to treating all patients regardless of their ability to pay. Today they strive to improve the wellbeing and quality of life of 2,500 patients from across Central PA. cleftclinic.org

finding the peace YOU THOUGHT WAS LOST
SHELTER FROM THE STORM A Week Away was founded by Caleb Walker while he was undergoing treatment for brain cancer. Our mission is to provide a week of peace in the chaotic lives of families battling a life-threatening illness. After a successful first year, our goal for 2015 is to provide 10 families with respites in the coming year. A Week Away isn’t part of a bucket list. “It’s not to fulfill a dying wish, it’s so that when they come back they can continue the fight,” says Board Member Joel Walker. “If we can give people time, through hope, then we may just save their lives.” Marie McCune, Joe Fittipaldi, Joel Walker

part of history
c. emlen urban designed the lancaster press building in 1896 for the s. r. moss cigar factory and warehouse. The building was used for cigar rolling, drying, and storing tobacco. As S.R. Moss’s production fell, they gradually leased out space to a printing press. After 26 years in building, S.R. Moss sold the building to the Lancaster Press Printing Company. Their book printing department occupied the building from 1922 to 1992.
This unique and historic building is currently being developed into its new life—luxury condominiums. Forty-nine condominiums are available and range from under $200,000 up to $595,000. Amenities include exposed brick walls, hardwood flooring, upgraded kitchens and baths, rooftop lounge, fire pit, and grilling area. Restored details such as sawtooth skylights and exposed concrete beams will make owning a condo at Lancaster Press more like owning a part of history. Make an appointment for a private showing today.

The word is out: creative writing from the heart makes a difference in cancer recovery! This spring, the Lancaster General Health Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute teams with Write From The Heart Creative Writing Workshops to present Cancer and Creative Writing: Who Knew?!, a series of writing workshops for cancer patients, survivors, and their caregivers. Led by Melissa Greene, writer, teacher, and founder of Write From The Heart, these gentle, uplifting classes awaken the creative spirit, joyfully, without intimidation or pressure. Through warmth and whimsy, Melissa fosters trust. Her work enlivens and soothes —guiding us to relax, reflect and find our own voice. Workshops are a safe haven, especially for those who have always longed to write, but thought they couldn’t. No grades, grammar, or competition. No rules or red pen. Come to relax, write, and heal.
“Creative writing is an ancient, timehonored way to give expression to what lies deepest in our hearts and minds. It can be both an inner sanctuary in which to rest and find safety, as well as a path leading to transformation and healing.” C haplain Peter Jupin The LGH Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute

Workshops are free, and open to cancer patients and survivors in treatment at the Cancer Institute, or elsewhere. Also to caregivers, past and present. Call the Cancer Institute for dates and registration at 717.544.4636.

it includes a negative mindset that has adjusted to living and coping with nagging discomfort. “I try to educate my clients that they can change that.” Bob is working on a fellowship from Arcadia University and enjoys learning how to be as effective as possible—staying knowledgeable on the latest findings, treatments, and trainings. To him, wellness has a mind, body, and spirit component, which is why everyone gets a personalized treatment plan that encompasses exercise, mobility, and other aspects of health and wellbeing.
After thirteen years’ experience, Bob knows successful results come from individuals setting realistic goals for changing what they can. “A lot of our patients are here because they are in pain. I earnestly try to figure out what’s causing the pain,” he says. Bob notes that health is not just one-dimensional; sometimes

are helping their clients live happier and healthier lives. As physical therapists at Lancaster NeuroScience & Spine Associates, they diagnose and treat clients of all ages and levels of health. Whether it’s a health-related condition, illness, or injury, Bob and Andy strive to improve their patients’ ability to perform functional activities in their daily lives. The goals of physical therapy are to restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent and limit permanent disabilities.
Physical Therapist Andy Snyder says, “I
love the satisfaction I get from helping people feel better.” He enjoys the full-team approach and understands patients are there to get help with their condition. The neurosurgeons, physiatrists, physician assistants, certified registered nurse practitioners, and physical therapists all work together for the patient’s benefit. “Many times, depending on the diagnosis, the physicians will send patients to therapy first to see if they improve. Conversely, if we are treating someone in therapy and they just are not responding as planned, it is nice to be able to walk upstairs and personally speak to the provider to let them know first-hand what is going on with the patient,” he says. Education and teamwork are integral at Lancaster NeuroScience & Spine Associates. Through them, patients can make positive changes to lead healthier, happier lives.
