A V E R Y S O C I A L C I T Y. We’ll be honest: We like to host a great party. From five to five thousand, Lancaster is a perfect place to throw a party. It’s a place where everyone is welcome. There’s room for everyone at the table.

Having a thriving community is a lot like throwing a great party. It starts with a plan and a vision. This season, we’re inspired by the collaborations happening in both the City and the county; everyone wants to see Lancaster become a success. With brilliant collaborative spaces in the City like Pubforge (a tech-working space), RudeWood (a craftmakers’ space), and The Candy Factory (a co-working space), we’re working together and sharing ideas alongside some of the most creative people we know. The energy is palpable. A plan for the City is underway as we watch the Lancaster City Alliance’s Building on Strength strategic plan unfold. In the county, an even broader plan is launching with The Lancaster County Planning Commission’s places2040 which is helping to rethink what it means to be part of a community and value spaces—reflecting on our hopes and concerns for the county for the next 25 years. With an eye on business, we are thrilled to have a front row seat as the Lancaster Chamber moves to King Street. They’ve been very busy; we can’t wait to share the news about the opportunities they are creating for our business community. We’re also thankful for Discover Lancaster’s hard work to market Lancaster as a destination of the expected and the unexpected. The impact of tourism in our community is far reaching—tourism saves each homeowner about $1,000 a year and brings monies into the City to help keep local shops and businesses thriving. At Fig, we’re excited to help set the table for the future of a very social city. We’re happy to showcase all of the places and spaces where ideas are born and the future unfolds. We’re inspired by the cooperation and collective efforts. We have learned that most great ideas don’t happen in the boardroom—they happen when we’re out there connecting, meeting people, and sharing ideas. At Fig, we believe every gathering should be memorable and make an impact. We support the people, places, and partnerships that encourage collaboration. So get involved and stay involved. Make your voice heard—no RSVP necessary. Tell all your friends, make some room in your social calendar, and let’s get this party started. Learn how you can get involved on the following pages. Planning a gathering? Find all you need to know starting on page 57. Cheers to A City Authentic!

after thirty-six years in Buck, David Lyall is proud to call downtown Lancaster his new home! Along with the new location comes a new name: David Lyall Home & Design.

In 1979, Lyall’s father and uncle founded a small furniture store called Buck Home Furnishings. Lyall grew up in the family business and from an early age loved bold designs and visually interesting textures. He purchased the business in 2005 and began offering interior design services to clients throughout the Susquehanna Valley.

David Lyall Home & Design opened in February. Located on the corner of North Prince and West Walnut Streets, the building was originally an old tobacco warehouse and then a furniture warehouse in the 1920s. The beautifully renovated space offers a thoughtful retail selection. “This is a showroom full of things that are a little different and a little more refined,” Lyall says.

WHY DO WE NEED A PLAN? Lancaster County is a special place. It’s always changing, but we can adapt to these changes without losing our unique identity and sense of place. To do that, we need to think about places in a new way. Instead of focusing on old boundaries, we’re focusing on whole places: communities, corridors, and landscapes.

Lancaster County is a changing place.

WHO’S LEADING THE EFFORT? The Lancaster County Planning Commission is coordinating places2040 to ensure that Lancaster County remains a special place in the future. We do that by facilitating dialogue, creating shared plans and visions, and helping communities achieve results.

WHO’S PARTNERING WITH US? Seventeen countywide and city organizations have joined together to educate, build awareness, and engage the public in creating this plan. We’re calling them Partners for Place.

A comprehensive plan for Lancaster County’s future— a conversation about the kind of place we want the county to be.

THIS IS YOUR PLAN. What kind of future do you want to see?

FRESH FACE : choose the original, taste the best! is the tagline. The distinctive

taste of DiCarlo’s Original Pizza is made with a special crispy crust, a trademarked tangy sauce, and freshly ground provolone cheese. The “Original Way” includes sprinkling cheese on top of the square-shaped pizza after it comes hot out of the oven. A melted cheese option is also available along with fresh toppings like pepperoni, sausage, salami, ham, steak, olives, and bacon—to name a few. The company got its start in 1945. Family photos depicting the history of DiCarlo’s

D I C A R LO’S P I Z Z A decorate the walls of the restaurant, which seats about fifty. Owners Ned and Jodi Bauhof opened their first DiCarlo’s in York in 2014. The overwhelming success led them to open their second location in Lancaster’s Historic East Side. “People are happy that we’re here; there has been a lot of support and excitement,” Jodi says. In addition to their signature pizzas, DiCarlo’s is proud to offer calzones and baked sandwiches, pepperoni rolls, veggie rolls, and traditional favorites like breadsticks and salads. Guests can

dine in and enjoy window seating or watch the game while enjoying buffalo, hot, and barbecue boneless wings. Want the “Original” experience at home? The “Take n’ Bake” option allows guests to pick up the fresh, ready-to-bake pizzas and toppings and slide it in the oven at home. Affordable daily specials are also available as well as business deliveries and catered business lunches. DiCarlo’s is a fresh tradition with a delicious recipe you can taste! FRESH FACE : for the past 13 years, Jeremy

Hess and Donovan Roberts Witmer have captured compelling photography for clients in Lancaster and throughout the East Coast. In 2012, Donovan left his career as a magazine editor and creative director to join the Jeremy Hess Photographers’ team. In the years since that transition, the commercial side of the business has grown tremendously— identifying and creating visual narratives of local, regional, and national brands. Recently, it became clear that the time was right to create a new brand solely devoted to their commercial work. “At our core, we are photographers and

THE PREMISE STUDIO filmmakers. We partner with businesses to first identify what it is that makes their brand unique. Then we capture the story with visuals that clearly and confidently communicate to their audience,” the team shares. “That’s important to us. It starts with identity. It starts with the ‘why.’ That’s the premise—the foundation of what we’re capturing,” adds Donovan Roberts Witmer. With the launch of the new brand, the team expanded its range of services. The Premise Studio now offers motion and video production. “We look forward to the opportunity to work alongside brands and business as we create videos and films that get to the heart of what makes your

business great,” shares filmmaker Zack Wilson. “We believe that the foundation of every great brand is a great story. The Premise Studio exists to identify and communicate your story through captivating still and motion imagery.” Learn more about The Premise Studio and their new brand at thepremisestudio.com. FRESH FACE | spring 2016 | figlancaster.com NOW OPEN!

“ Tech is thriving here. This is our part of putting a stake in the ground.”

Joel Walker, owner & Samantha Bare, manager

FRESH FACE : “pubforge is a collaborative tech-working space that’s

been uniquely tailored toward web professionals, programmers, geeks, and people who make their living by using computers and high-speed Internet,” says Joel Walker, Pubforge’s owner. The new tech-working space is located on the second floor inside Tellus360 alongside Walker’s other business, Industrial Resolution, which has also moved its offices – and 15 employees – from its longheld location inside the Griest Building. “Our big picture has always been to see Lancaster become a tech destination,”

PUBFORGE Walker says. Pubforge follows a coworking model with part-time and fulltime members who are looking for an environment where sharing ideas, best practices, and skills can take precedence and raise the standards of excellence in the tech community. Members who join Pubforge will enjoy the benefit of collaborating with other likeminded problem solvers in their industry, allowing them to stay on the cutting edge of their craft. Other perks include access to high-speed Internet, special video conferencing booths, frequent skill-sharing

Lunch & Learn sessions, and the option of purchasing a meal plan from Tellus360. “It’s an intentional space built for people who want to get their work done. It’s taking care of all the distractions so they can focus on what they do best,” Walker says. Thirty-two desks are available. “Tech is thriving here. This is our part of putting a stake in the ground. We’re going to share the things we know and the contacts we have to help technologists grow and be the best version of themselves and produce the best work they’ve ever done.” Learn more at pubforge.work.

FRESH FACE | spring 2016 | figlancaster.com newly renovated!

Kathleen & Matt Smucker, owners of Cafe One Eight with Cianna

FRESH FACE : CAF E O N E E I G H T cafe one eight is celebrating the start of their fourth year in business with a brand new renovation! Owners Matt and Kathleen Smucker named the café after the address: 18 West Orange Street and Acts 1:8. The couple collaborated with Christopher and Claudia Beiler, owners of The Chris & Claude Co., to transform the space. The husband and wife team specializes in creating unique spaces with the atmosphere of home. Claudia explains. “We like to tell people’s stories that reflect the owner’s creativity while blending in extra things” like Matt and Kathleen’s national and international travels. The newly redesigned space incorporates some barn wood on the walls and lights above those for a very clean and refreshing look. There are also new tables and chairs throughout. The look is raw and organic— paying homage to both couples’ Mennonite heritage. “We’ve mixed the elements of wood and metals to create a natural look and feel,” Claudia describes. Cafe One Eight is excited to show off their new look. “We love being here in Lancaster and meeting so many great people. We’re very excited to continue to serve our guests delicious food in an atmosphere that is comfortable and beautiful.” Guests will still find their favorites (like fruit and yogurt parfaits, breakfast burritos, salads, and sandwiches) on the menu with newly added specials and even more local options.

Alex Rudegeair & Jeremiah Linton

FRESH FACE :

R U D E WOOD D E S I G N

alex rudegeair and jeremiah linton became friends while studying

carpentry at Thaddeus Steven’s School of technology. The two formed RudeWood Design in October of 2014. Their custom design and build woodworking company focuses on skilled commercial and highend residential creations. RudeWood’s handiwork can be seen inside Spring House Brewing Company, The Pressroom Restaurant, and Square One’s Coffee Roasting Warehouse—as well as many private residences. While they specialize in unique one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture, the team has also created

lighting fixtures, wine racks, and nearly any custom piece you can imagine. Both Rudegeair and Linton are excited to share their talents, and their beautiful workspace, with others. Within the next year, the two will open The Shop—a maker’s cooperative space. “We’re focusing on community, the arts, and education. It’s going to have art studios, a woodshop, a ceramic studio, glassblowing, and two classrooms,” Rudegeair says. The Shop will offer artists levels of memberships, including the option for

full-time leased spaces. “We want it to be a thriving community of ambitious and upand-coming artists,” Linton adds. The two are partnering with local schools and educational institutions to help students advance their skills. The Shop will be a hive of creatives and mentors who are willing to teach classes and collaborate in order to build community through craft. See their work and learn more at rudewooddesign.com. WHERE SUCCESSFUL

Sing. Act. Dance. PERFORM!

STUDENTS SHINE My goal in life is to someday perform on Broadway or maybe even on TV! I take private voice lessons (with Michael) and an acting class (with Debra). I have been a student at Popovsky Performing Arts Center for about a year now. My teachers are really outgoing and supportive. You can tell they love what they do! During my voice lessons, Michael works with me on technique and how to tell a story through singing. He also helps me prepare for auditions! In acting class, we practice showing different emotions and learn ways to make each script our own. PPAS gives me the confidence to keep working toward my goal!

YWCA Lancaster has been a vital part of the community for 127 years, working to eliminate racism and empower women through a variety of programs and value-added services.

Excentia is a nonprofit organization serving Lancaster County providing support to people with developmental needs from birth through adulthood. It’s our goal to be able to provide comprehensive support for as little or as long as they are needed.

The Mix at Arbor Place is a youth development center supporting disadvantaged children and youth in Lancaster City. The Mix is dedicated to innovative programming that provides holistic development. The central hub of programming is a free intentional afterschool program that provides tutoring, poetry programs, music, mentoring, and meals to all participants. The Mix is also home to the Lancaster Police Athletic League which connects cops and kids in positive ways through sports. Together, with your support, we are helping to make Lancaster a better place for kids and families!

The YWCA offers quality childcare services at an affordable rate for children six weeks to twelve years old, enabling parents to work and pursue an education. Just last year, twenty teen parents were able to stay in school while the YWCA cared for their children. The community is invited to support our childcare programs by attending an 80s-themed Pop-up Party on March 12. Details at ywcalancaster.org.

Our services include the S. June Smith Center, providing care for children and families from birth to preschool; Adult Day Services and Training Programs; and around-the-clock services for 27 residential homes in Lancaster County. Learn more at ourexcentia.org.

POWER

every child deserves to have a loving family—to live in a home that provides stability and opportunities to grow. In the Central Pennsylvania area, hundreds of children are removed from their homes each year due to traumatic experiences like: abuse, neglect, abandonment or behavioral issues. These children desperately need the care and support of a loving, skilled foster family. Foster parents are everyday people from every walk of life. They share a genuine desire to care for children and the ability to provide a safe, nurturing home. At Pressley Ridge, we understand that the commitment to foster parenting comes with great rewards—and great challenges. That’s why we’re here to support our foster families every step of the way. dr. jessica mack joined Lancaster NeuroScience and Spine Associates in 2015. “Everyone here is really friendly and I enjoy the camaraderie,” she says with a smile. As an interventional physiatrist, she helps diagnose and manage her clients’ back, neck, and nerve pain. She has a joyful presence and a friendly disposition.

“It’s my job to manage pain conservatively and find some other option prior to surgery,” she says. “I enjoy looking at all the alternatives and putting them together to see if we can get to that optimal function and improvement. But, of course, we do have great surgeons here, in case it is necessary.”

children have been watching birds out of their back window at home. “They’re getting good at identifying bird species,” she says, laughing. Dr. Mack works with clients to create a plan that makes sense for them, what they want to do, and what feels right for them. “My goal is to get them back to their best function and back into what they want to do, enjoy doing, or need to do.”

Studying the whole function of the patient rather than just their symptoms is what attracted Dr. Mack to the field of physical medicine. She graduated from medical school at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque, and went through her Training and Fellowship programs at the University of Michigan. BOLD. DISTINCTIVE. BIBLICAL. “Dayspring Christian Academy places God’s word as the foundation of all other knowledge. It begins with Biblical truth then teaches every subject through the perspective of those truths. It emphasizes that all knowledge is God’s. Nothing exists apart from Him: not science, not math, not economics, not rhetoric, nothing. If we, as scholars, intend to glean as much knowledge as possible, then we must acknowledge the source of information and the reason for it: God.”
