good taste With rolling fertile countryside just outside the city limits, Lancaster has deep connections to its local food sources. And, while the average pound of produce in many parts of the U.S. travels about 1,500 miles from farm to plate, Lancastrians enjoy fruits and vegetables so fresh we can shake hands with the farmer who picked them that morning. Here in the City of Lancaster, we know that local food means healthier food, not just for ourselves, but for the community as a whole. We also know that local eating is one of the easiest and most pleasant ways to make a difference. While still cherishing the traditional comfort foods we’ve enjoyed for generations, these days, Lancastrians are branching out and trying new tastes. With local restaurants like Citronnelle, Lemongrass Thai, and Annie Bailey’s serving as our passport to culinary adventures, we can now enjoy the world on our plate without leaving our fair city. In this issue, learn more about Lancaster’s amazing gastronomical diversity, as well our favorite summer cocktails, outdoor dining spots, and other local picks. Enjoy eating well in the city this summer.

giving back

david i. silbert, md KinderSee

dr. david silbert believes that every child deserves to see well. Since first launching KinderSee in 2008, Dr. Silbert—a pediatric ophthalmologist with Lancaster’s Family Eye Group—has found deep personal and professional satisfaction in providing eye care for local at-risk schoolchildren. “It’s wonderful to work with these kids,” says Dr. Silbert. “You see that sparkle in their eye, and you want to keep that sparkle there.” A comprehensive program designed to screen and treat socio-economically disadvantaged children, KinderSee provides integrated eye care from screening to glasses to treatment for amblyopia (lazy eye), helping each child experience a school environment in which vision doesn’t impede learning or success in life.

As Dr. Silbert explains: “When people ask me, ‘Why are you doing this in the schools?’ I say, ‘Because that’s where the kids are.’ The bottom line is that serving children’s vision needs results in improved outcomes—better grades, better behavior.”

“We’re going to villages, doing the screenings, the exams, and the glasses in the same day. It made me think that if we could do it in Honduras, we can do it here.”

“ I love my glasses so much that I wear them to bed so I can see better in my dreams.”

A partnership between Family Eye Group and School District of Lancaster, KinderSee’s mission is to provide excellent vision for every child without regard to financial resources. To help defray the cost of providing eyeglasses, transportation, and other related needs, tax-deductible donations to KinderSee can now be made online through the Lancaster Education Foundation at kindersee.org/donations.

Bringing the lessons learned through medical missions work back home to Lancaster, Dr. Silbert is part of a team that regularly travels to Honduras to provide eye care.

For the kids who receive care, they’re not only getting the gift of better sight, but also a brighter and more successful future. And as one child said of her new specs: “I love my glasses so much that I wear them to bed so I can see better in my dreams.”

For Susan Louie and Rafael Perez, their new restaurant Citronnelle is a love story. The couple spent their lives in New York: she in the fashion industry as a design director, he as a chef for several trendy restaurants in the city. When friends moved to Lancaster, the avid travelers began spending occasional weekends here when they weren’t circling the globe. Trips to the area became more frequent, until finally they bought a house, and then an Orange Street storefront. They realized they were finally ready to make the commitment to Lancaster, and to each other. It was on their honeymoon trip to Africa, where they sipped citronnelle (lemongrass) tea, which offered the name for their new venture. Inspired by their travels and experiences, their new restaurant serves “classically

prepared French cuisine with a global twist, incorporating Asian and African ingredients,” says Susan. “We love traveling and applying what we learn to our cooking and decorating.” Classically trained Rafael worked for a number of renowned New American, European, and Asian restaurateurs in New York, including Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto. His experiences coalesce into his internationally inspired menu, with ingredients sourced close to home. Her fashion sensibility is exhibited in the intimate 500-square-foot space, with dark wood paneling, bronze metallic touches, and retro-style chairs to create a cozy midcentury ambiance. “The decor should be as thoughtful as the food, because it adds to one’s overall experience,” says Susan.

Although the couple’s menu is designed to appeal to every palate (including those belonging to vegetarians and vegans), they suspect local favorites may become their Lentil and Merguez Terrine with spicy harissa oil or their Chicken Bisteeya. For dessert, they’re offering a signature Citronnelle souffle. “It has notes of lemongrass and is served with a coconut crème anglaise and a citrus tuile cookie,” says Susan. Eventually, the couple hopes to add a small garden dining space filled with their own pots of lemongrass to continue to serve as inspiration, and as ingredients. Citronnelle is slated to open early summer.

in season OUR FAVORITE LOCAL FOOD, FUN, FESTIVITIES, FITNESS & MORE THIS SUMMER

summer is meant to be savored.

The abundance of summertime not only fills our baskets to overflowing with locally grown bounty, it also stretches our sun-soaked days into firefly-illuminated nights. As we picnic in the park, ride bikes to our favorite ice cream parlor, or stay for extra innings at the old ballgame, we’re

like children again, devouring every minute outdoors. Healthy living is never so easy or so natural as when summer beckons us out to play. The cozy, hibernating days of winter are just a memory as we dine al fresco, feasting on fresh, inspired meals under the very same sun that warmed the farmers’ fields.

for brothers andrew and david neff, life revolves around the creature comforts: good food, good drinks, good friends.

increases, and we can share that with our customers, who will also be learning along with us.”

Growing up in the specialty-food business, the brothers developed discerning palates, helping to purvey the best of domestic and imported meats and cheeses aimed at delighting customers and making gatherings special. Their European travels and life in cities at once expanded and refined their taste, helping them hone in on a shared vision of gathering the greatest gastronomical provisions in one place.

A second floor chef’s table will serve as a private tasting room for intimate gatherings.

To their surprise, the physical location for that vision brought them back home to open Hunger-N-Thirst amid Lancaster’s booming beer culture. Their aim is to offer their tasty artisanal discoveries and surprising pairings to their community to sample on-site in their craft beer taproom and gastropub, or to take home from their specialty-food store and take-out bottle shop. “I can’t wait to try pairing new things that come out of the kitchen with our extensive selection of craft beers and artisanal spirits,” says Andrew. “With everything we taste, our knowledge

Their parents Nancy and Sam Neff—Sam being a former co-owner of S. Clyde Weaver—will draw on their decades of experience to run the specialty-food store. This frees up the brothers to experiment with their food and drinks in a renovated warehouse, which echoes the city itself. The industrial bones of the space are warmed with great slabs of polished sycamore lining the bar and tables just as the trees line the Conestoga River. Local craftsmen created the copper countertop, distressing the surface to a cozy finish. “We’re trying to import some flavor into the local community and promote Lancaster to a larger audience,” says David, who sees the venture as a tourist draw as well as a local hot spot, especially with its outdoor garden seating in the summer. “We’re passionate about discovering what tastes great.”

fresh faces Corey Fogarty is a lot like the 225-seat restaurant he’s opening at 201 N. Queen Street this summer: ambitious, slightly larger-than-life, definitely all fired up—and just a little bit irreverent.

101 Drafts Wood fired Pizza Live Music

As he launches Federal Taphouse with its woodfired pizzas and over 100 craft beers, this driven entrepreneur brings a lifetime of experience to his latest endeavor. Raised in Lancaster County, Corey began his restaurant career as a busboy at the tender age of 15. Spending his college and post-college years waiting tables and tending bar, his next move was to the booming web industry, as well as the pre-crash real estate market in Florida. “But in 2006, the real estate market tanked,” says Corey. “And I went with it.” Rising even stronger from the rubble, Corey remade himself, returning to his first love: the hospitality industry. Putting his past experiences to good use, he ultimately became the managing partner of the Fogarty Hospitality Group. When he returned to Lancaster in 2011 with a thriving three-store chain of Florida restaurants on his resumé, Corey was impressed with the local scene. “Lancaster’s not the same place I left,” says Corey. “The area has definitely become more metropolitan.” With partnerships in establishments like Busted Bean Bakery & Coffee Co., Susan Notter Pastries, Dishes by Diane Catering, and the recently opened Harrisburg Federal Taphouse, Corey has established himself locally as a successful restaurant developer. In launching Federal Taphouse in Lancaster, Corey has been grateful for the city’s support and for the small-business-friendly atmosphere. “The city infrastructure and the people here are wonderful.”

Raw ingredients burst with flavor—no flame needed. Take a refreshing walk through Lancaster Central Market. A cucumber here; some local goat cheese there. Grab some microgreens and experiment with duck eggs. Take a break at the juice stand for something cold and vibrant to cut into the summer heat. After all, our local food ways are forever tied to the agrarian culture of Lancaster County. Biting into our local heritage never tasted so good. fresh faces Ever since she was a little girl with stars in her eyes, Kristin Snyder has dreamed of opening her own boutique. “I drew my first floorplan for a store when I was in third grade.” After graduating from McCaskey High School, she moved to Philadelphia and went to school for fashion design and fashion marketing—all with the singular goal of opening own store. Her eye for fashion and sewing skills landed her a series of freelance jobs as a costume designer for theater and films, as well as wardrobe styling gigs. Each visit home to Lancaster began to refine her dream as she realized Philly’s culture was beginning to take shape here. Even a few years living in Hawaii couldn’t dissuade her. She left a tropical paradise to create her own vision, opening Sophie Stargazer on East King Street. The chic white walls with exposed industrial piping are a fitting foil to the high-end fashions straight from the runways and red carpets. Not content to simply mirror what the stars are wearing, Kristin aims to also share her personal sensibility, carrying the most fashion-forward eco-friendly brands and investment pieces to serve as the dependable foundation for any look. “I like products that do something more than just be pretty,” she says. This intention carries through her lifestyle store, with home furnishings doubling as displays for her merchandise. “I want people to walk in and have it feel like home. I want it to be a fun experience,” she says. What she thinks her customers will appreciate most is her dedication to customer service, and her experience creating the most flattering look for any body. Her years as a wardrobe stylist taught her all about fabrics and how to dress a woman. “It has made me so aware of what works and what doesn’t,” she says. Driven by her childhood dream, Kristin hopes her clients feel just as passionate about her store as she does: the cheeky painted gold stars on the ceiling are an ever-present inspiration. Opening on Merchant Row at Historic East Side.

fresh faces

Melanie Stoycos knows that one person’s cast-offs are another’s treasure—especially when those items originally came from the Coach store. The budding entrepreneur counts avid shoppers among her close friends. And when these friends are ready to purge their closets to make room for next season’s trends, Melanie is there to collect the fashionable extras to turn into consignment scores. Her new shop, Twice Found, is upscale resale at its most stylish. Melanie sees her role more as a curator than as a merchant—selecting only the highest-quality gently loved items (or even those still carrying original tags) for her shop. The store takes a breezy beach vacation feel as its design inspiration, donned in hues of turquoise, camel, and white. “I love the beach, and I wanted the look of the place to have that fresh feeling,” she says. While women’s clothes, accessories and jewelry are the focus, Melanie will also carry some small home goods, as well as select children’s, junior’s and men’s clothing. Melanie envisions her shop as a welcoming environment, where friends can chat over a cup of coffee at the cafe tables while their children play or read books on the pint-sized furnishings. “I want it to be a gathering space, not just a store,” she says. And for her customers, she wishes an experience akin to discovering buried treasure as they uncover fabulous fashion finds at unbelievable prices. “I want them to say, ‘How could anyone have given this up?’”

Children Deserve A Chance

Within Lancaster City there is a youth haven sitting on 16 West King Street where education counts and leaders are made. This building is home to Children Deserve A Chance Foundation (CDCF), an organization dedicated to engaging and empowering Lancaster youth with the value of education and hard work. Through mentoring, tutoring, and professional exposure, CDCF provides a holistic approach to developing young public-spirited citizens of scholastic excellence and strong principle. With the ultimate goal of getting students to and through college, CDCF proudly provides merit scholarships, motivational speakers, and educational programs dedicated to literacy enhancement, character development, and entrepreneurship. Learn more online at childrendeserveachance.com.

L to R: PCA&D: Tom Bejgrowicz, faculty member/ adviser; Danielle Farrell ‘14, graphic design major; Nick Belcher ‘13, graphic design major; Stephanie Choy ‘15, graphic design major; Aaron’s Acres: Lori B. Donofrio-Galley, director of development; Risa C. Paskoff, executive director; Laurie Cubell, board member; and Michael Tafelski, board president.

Aaron’s Acres

During its 15th anniversary year, Aaron’s Acres introduced the public to its new organizational logo. Danielle Farrell ‘14, a junior at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, created the winning logo for Aaron’s Acres. She commented, “Hearing about Aaron’s Acres, I was overwhelmed with the fact that these people are heroes. They created a sanctuary not only for campers, but for their parents as well. Designing the logo, I wanted a symbol that embodied the characteristics of Aaron’s Acres: love, comfort, acceptance, equality, and security.” Learn more online at aaronsacres.org.

a place to grow together

Students and their advisor in the ‘Simple Living’ LivingLearning Community meet weekly in ‘Simplicity Circles.’ As our students say, “We don’t live with any less— we truly live with more.”

the garden at elizabethtown college started five years ago on just half an acre of land. And the road to fruitful harvests hasn’t been easy. Thanks to the tilling and hard work of our students and dining services staff together, the once harsh growing environment is now covered in nutrient-rich, crop-friendly soil.

BE A BIGGER PART OF THE WORLD.

Today the garden grows approximately 9 months of the year, using hoop houses to sustain the garden during colder months. Produce from the garden can be found on the plates of students dining at the Jay’s Nest and in the Marketplace. During the summer, student workers maintain the garden—it’s a fresh and hands-on learning experience.

fig voices : Matt Wheeler & Vintage Heart ®

AS HE SINGS ABOUT THE MAGIC OF BEING YOUNG IN SUMMER, THE LYRICS OF LANCASTER ACOUSTIC FOLK ARTIST MATT WHEELER EVOKE THE CHILDHOOD DAYS OF JUNE THAT LAST FOREVER:

VOICES

“Summer came and it / Broke upon us like / Roman candles in the sky / Trade your coins for a / Handful of wildflowers and / Let the summer rain / Sing you to sleep / Summer sing you to sleep.”

Shot on file Copy coming

Underscored with poignant melodies, Matt’s lyrics take on a poetic spirit that reflects what it means to be human. With the release of his first full-length album, Strings & Wires, Matt strives to “bring words and music together to reach people in a way that the spoken word is unable to.” Wrestling honestly with deep issues of faith, Matt’s earnest and seeking voice resonates through his modern folk music. In “The Lark,” inspired by Book Three of Les Misérables, his percussive sound evokes birds beating their wings against oppression. And in “A Contemplation on Peace,” the changing chords break the reverie, reflecting our struggle for true peace in a torn and broken world. With a two-year gestation for this long-awaited album, Matt fulfilled his desire to create “really good art that focuses on the parts of life that are most important.” And as this self-described late-blooming artist carves out his own space in the Lancaster City music scene, Matt is humbly embracing this new bit of recognition of his work. “It’s a privilege to make something that I think is a good piece of art and have people agree.”

“ it’s a privilege to make something that I think is a good piece of art and have people agree.” “Matt’s Strings EP caught my attention, especially the violin and cello on the song ‘Avalanche’. Now with the help of his fans he has released his debut album showcasing his warm sound and heartfelt lyrics. If you are a fan of Josh Ritter, give a listen to Matt!” helen leicht

Meet new local businesses that are adding to the innovative culture of downtown. Look for our fig® innovator in each new issue.

fran gillott & ryan keener Owners of DeliveryCrowd

Explaining that “time is the one thing you can’t get more of,” DeliveryCrowd founders and innovators Fran Gillott and Ryan Keener are really on to something. As with the best of ideas, the concept behind DeliveryCrowd is simple: “You want something delivered, and we want to deliver it to you. We know you’re busy. That’s why our Crowdies do the legwork and you simply answer your door. You don’t even have to put on your shoes.” The term “Crowdie” originates from DeliveryCrowd’s unique business model: when a new order request is made, they search their crowd of available labor to

provide the best fit for the customer, often referred to as “crowd-sourcing.” DeliveryCrowd then sources the best delivery person for each customer’s needs in a real-time fashion. Conceptually similar to eBay, DeliveryCrowd uses an online platform to connect buyers, sellers, and drivers. With an elegant solution to a common need, the genius of this innovation is that—thanks to DeliveryCrowd—customers now have convenient access to countless local restaurants, dry cleaners, flower shops, auto parts shops, and other stores that may not have their own delivery staff. This means less time commitment, less mileage, and less

hassle for shoppers and a more streamlined and fluid approach to deliveries for local businesses. Meanwhile, the delivery people (“Crowdies”) enjoy the freedom of flexible work, enabling them to monetize their free time. And, although the Crowdies serve as independent contractors, DeliveryCrowd strives to connect businesses with the very best delivery people, keeping a clear eye on safety, professionalism, and courtesy. An innovative idea whose time has come, owners and creators Fran and Ryan are looking ahead to a day when “anything can be delivered to anywhere by anyone. Your imagination is the limit.”

fig® authentic is sponsored by spencer law firm joking that it’s kind of like a vegan speakeasy, the five owners of The Seed—Fen Alankus, Courtney Lawson, Audrie Marsh, Josh Redd, and Amanda Reitz—point out that although it can be a challenge to locate, the people of Lancaster are enthusiastically discovering this unique café and community gathering space. Whether traversing the long hallway at 52 N. Queen Street to get their Kombucha on, enjoy local sustainably sourced food, or engage in the work of community-building, no one needs a password or a special knock to get into this “radically inclusive safe space.” In fact, with a friendly vibe

reflected by its brightly checkered black, yellow, red, blue, and green floor, The Seed celebrates individuality, tolerance, and service to each other and the planet. It is also the first and only workerowned and collectively managed community space and vegetarian/vegan café in the City of Lancaster. Inspired by the consensus-based decision-making model of the Occupy Lancaster movement of late 2011, The Seed serves as a space where people can gather and continue the work of social justice. In addition, as the only establishment in Lancaster where food can be made vegan, gluten-free, or soy-free, The Seed seeks to be a nourishing place where anyone can walk in and find the food and drink they need. According to Dr. Monacci, three important lifestyle habits can help reduce the risk of back pain: exercising, maintaining a healthy weight, and not smoking. While the first two healthy habits are not surprising, research indicates a high prevalence of back pain among smokers. One reason is that smoking damages the blood vessels that supply the back. In addition, cigarette smoking is bad for bones and can interfere with healing after surgeries.

offering nonsurgical intervention PROFILE: DR. WILLIAM T. MONACCI at lancaster neuroScience & spine associates, the good news is the majority of patients who suffer from neck and back pain do not require surgery. With highly trained neurosurgeons, physiatrists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and physical therapists on staff, the team at LNSA works together to create comprehensive, individualized treatment plans that often help prevent the need for surgical intervention. The even better news is, for the small percentage that do require surgery, expert

surgeons like Dr. William T. Monacci have the experience to address pain issues with often minimally invasive procedures. As he explains, “Technological improvements over the past 20 years mean better results and faster recovery times.” And with outpatient procedures to address problems like compression of the sciatic nerve, many patients are able to go home the very same day experiencing significant, often life-changing relief.

Thanks to physicians like Dr. Monacci, a former neurosurgery consultant to the Army Surgeon General who has served thousands of patients over his 20-year career, patients can rest assured they will receive unparalleled care. And with LNSA’s dedication to personalized and coordinated care, their core mission is always serving the community with competency, reliability, respect, and empathy.
