Fig® is a communications package offering both voice and vision for great small cities. Our carefully cultivated audience appreciates authenticity and distinction. A symbol of unity and prosperity, the subtleties of figs and their importance in historic cultures make ‘Fig’ a fitting name to showcase a distinctive small city lifestyle. Sophisticated and not too sweet, Fig® celebrates the understated elements and beauty that weave themselves into thriving small cities.
FRESH FROM FIG®
WE’VE ALWAYS KNOWN the City of Lancaster was
an arts town. College students lugging paper and canvases roam the streets as they make their way to studio classes. Galleries gallore speckle the cityscape. The Fulton Theatre raises not only its curtains but the standard by which we judge locally produced theater. And come First Friday, the city seems to overflow with a creative energy that can’t be contained by one small span of evening hours. But the secret is out. From West Chester to the streets of Lancaster’s West Chestnut, people are talking. Through fresh arts initiatives—Music for Everyone, Poetry Paths, and more—Lancaster is defining a ‘New Urbanism’, an urban landscape so entrenched in the arts that the two are practically inseperable. So take a seat, browse a gallery, take a class, pick up a brush. Get caught in the art.
On the pages of this issue of Fig®, enjoy powerful images of art and experience, unique tastes and new ideas. Creativity is making an impact in our City and the results are hard to ignore. PLUM PERFECT. PLUM SALON AND SPA’S LANI TODD CREATES BEAUTY AND STYLE IN THE CITY OF LANCASTER.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY? An experimental self haircut before the high school prom inspired the choice. I attended with a bold, short, bleached-blonde look, similar to Billy Idol. I was my own canvas to experiment—after that I wanted nothing more than to study hair and makeup. After attending cosmetology school I took a leap of faith, and moved to Miami to work with photographers. PLUM IS 3500 SQUARE FEET—A LOT OF SPACE FOR THE RELAXED AND MOSTLY STATIONARY SERVICES OF A SALON AND SPA . IF THERE ISN’ T A BOWLING LANE HIDDEN, WHAT IS THERE TO CHECK OUT ? Being that we are neighbored with the Cork Factory Hotel I knew that we had to be full service. I wanted to make certain that we catered to the needs of both hotel guests and their ballroom’s bridal parties. We have an area for massage, facials, manicures and pedicures, hair and makeup and a private suite for bridal parties. IN A PERFECT WORLD, MORE PEOPLE WOULD...? Make ample time to restore both their body and mind. The salon and spa experience is about beauty inside and out. We need to take notes from our animal friends who spend 90% of their time grooming, nourishing and resting themselves. People devote more like 10% to these basic needs and the rest is work. At Plum, we truly encourage people to take time to relax. Read more from Lani at figlancaster.com/plumsalonandspa

HER EYE-CATCHING PORTFOLIO CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF AN AGENCY ART DIRECTOR. But it was how well 2010 graduate Vanessa Leddy was prepared for the work world and her inspired creativity that propelled her to the position of art director and studio manager at Lancaster-based White Good, a full-service agency serving clients in the furnishings, decorative finish and building products industries. Vanessa’s internship was eyeopening, as well, and brought into focus the skills she would need to succeed.

THE AUTHENTICS: MIMI SHAPIRO
FIGLANCASTER.COM
And as a metaphor for creativity’s place in the human experience, Mimi’s glue stick will do more than just do. “Creativity keeps the world spinning on its axis,” she professes. It’s what holds us all together. And what can also fuse artists to their “activist” leanings. As she states: “The world is the way it is. We have to push it in a different direction—nudge it off of dead center.” Mimi does a lot of nudging in Lancaster, serving on the HARB board, the Shade Tree Commission and the Literary Guild, and this summer the Fulton Youth Theatre. But she does it with her art, too, always hoping it will make someone think.

POETRY AND ARTWORK BY MIMI SHAPIRO
“JUST FLUTTER IT!” It’s Mimi Shapiro’s version of “Just do it.” As a mixed media artist, she often has a plan when she sets out to configure a new book of collage and poetry, but readily admits that it might go very differently. When she reaches into one of her boxes of the thousands of items she’s cut out—items that dance with texture and flavor—she may touch one briefly. But then? “Drop it and see what happens,” she says. Sure, it may fall upside down, but sometimes the back is better than the front...

“THIS SEASON is going to be an incredibly rich mix of pure joy and captivating drama. I am so excited to open the season with The All Night Strut!, a revue of the music of my absolute favorite time period—the 1930s and ’40s. I think the music of that era tapped into an attitude common to all Americans at the time. We can do it, we’re in this together. And that’s ultimately what I love about the music of the show... these songs truly act as a unifying force for everyone who hears them, which is something I think we could all use right now. I know that when you come to the theatre this music will transport you to another time—and you’ll probably have a hard time staying in your seat.”

FRESH FACES FROM A SOUTH PRINCE STREET RECYCLING PLANT TO A DOWNTOWN STORE FOR SUSTAINABLE HOME PRODUCTS, RICK FRESCATORE INTRODUCES THE GREEN SCENE TO GALLERY ROW. ON YOUR FACEBOOK PAGE , YOU SAY THAT WHEN IT COMES TO SUSTAINABILITY, FEW OF US KNOW ‘ALL’ THE ANSWERS. CAN YOU ELABORATE ON THIS NOTION? It’s not so much that no one has ‘any ’ answers, it’s that there is so much information out there that we can be fooled into thinking we do have all the answers. That notion closes the door to finding solutions. At Fresco, we operate by seeking solutions with the foundational principles of : People. Planet . Probity. Purpose. AND WHAT IS THIS PURPOSE? Purpose for us is in effecting change. It’s not enriching, in the money sense. Operating in a way that does not leave unnecessary ‘footprints’ behind us. SO, WHAT IS GREEN, EXACTLY ?” Green, an overused term, is simply focusing on smarter, safer and healthier choices, to enable living, working, playing and building in a sustainable manner.
YOU CLAIM THAT THE GREEN SCENE WILL BE LIKE A “LIT TLE SLICE OF MANHAT TAN.” IS LANCASTER READY? It’s not so much if it’s the right time for the Green Scene in Lancaster; It’s if Lancaster is aware that we’re here. The media informs people of what they deem important , and sustainable prod ucts haven’t been on the top of their list , yet . To us, it’s always a good time to do what makes sense. JESSICA SMUCKER SHE DOESN’T WANT TO BE A SUPERHERO, but Lancaster native Jessica Smucker is by no means a fall-girl. As the unassuming front for her dark pop band, The Sleeping World, this folk-rock singer-songwriter unabashedly takes a stand for her haunting, even self-professed “gloomy” lyrics; for her controversial themes; for her suspenseful storytelling metered out in keen poetic morsels; and for her penchant to perform in venues other than bars and clubs—places where the music can actually be heard. And appreciated. “I want my music to find the people who want to hear it,” she says simply. Yet, it was precisely the fall that animated what Jessica intrinsically knew was her first “good” song. She’d been writing songs, “every now and then,” for her entire life. “But Same Time Every Year” was different. It was more complex. Lamenting and nostalgic at the same time, it delineated the blurring of seasonal lines as we age— when there is no more school in the fall. The song worked, Jessica explains, because of its equal measures of clarity and ambiguity, because of its invitation to let people “coopt it for their own emotional purposes.” That’s what a good song does. As an insomniac, often a willful one because she just can’t let go, Jessica refuses to give up on the integrity of her music. Or of good songs. So, in this fall issue of Fig®, we salute Jessica Smucker and The Sleeping World— even when supine, they’re perpetually awake, always standing up, always striving to “take it as far as it can go.” (So long as they always come back to Lancaster, of course. Anytime of year...) Visit jessicasmucker.com to learn more.

FRESH FACES
WINE BARS HAVE BEEN GAINING POPULARITY IN THE LAST DECADE . WOULD YOU SAY THAT THIS IS FREEING WINE FROM THE NOTION OF THE “UPSCALE” AND MAKING IT MORE ACCESSIBLE? I’m glad you asked that question. What we’re trying to do is not pretentious. I don’t want Pour to be exclusive; I want it to be inclusive. Great wine and craft beers are for drinking and enjoying— It’s an everyday thing, not an aloof thing. HOW WILL YOU ACHIEVE THIS ? That’s why the word ‘social’ is part of our message. You come to Pour for an interactive taste of wine, of craft beer, of small and social plates, of discussion with new friends— ones you’ll meet right here in a unique urban space. We’re all about a communal mix .
SO, WHAT IS A GREAT WINE? It speaks to the soil and the region. It’s a wine of place. SPEAKING OF PLACE, YOU’ VE BEEN IN CHICAGO FOR 11 YEARS, WHY OPEN POUR IN LANCASTER? I’m from Lancaster, and I’ve always wanted to come back . To give something back . People in Downtown Lancaster aren’t just looking for change anymore, they ’re embracing it . AS SOMEONE WITH A WELL-DEVELOPED PALATE , HOW DO YOU PAIR YOUR WINE, BEER, AND MENU ITEMS ? My personal philosophy with wine? You drink what you drink . So, go ahead, have a cabernet with a piece of fish. I’ll give recommendations, but you eat and drink how you like.
STOP IN FOR A POUR Opening this September
Drop by for a carefully prepared menu of small plates and charcuterie as well as a wide selection of American craft beer and unique Belgian beers with 10 taps.

THERE’S A COMFORT IN THE CYCLE OF THE SEASONS, a thread of continuity tying our years together. As autumn approaches, woolen sweaters replace gauzy sundresses. The trees primp themselves in saturated oranges, reds, and yellows. Even the air feels made-over: crisp, clean, and crackling with energy. And, as in so many years past, Lancaster gathers at Central Market to celebrate another bountiful harvest. Homemade or homegrown—it’s all here at Central Market’s 60-plus stands. Hot vegetable soup and freshly baked breads offer coziness and comfort. Locally grown pumpkins prepare for new lives as cinnamon-scented pies or canvases for small hands. And don’t forget the opulent abundance of seasonal staples like squash, beets, broccoli, artichokes, radishes, carrots, potatoes, and zucchini. So whether you’re hungry for lunch or wondering what to do about dinner, gather at Lancaster Central Market for friendly faces, fall food, and your daily recommended serving of “local”.

has not only a national “Indie City” ranking, we’re also—perhaps even more enviable— an authentic arts town. Artists who come here will say so. They come to perform, to paint, write poetry and to be inspired. We’re a place where artists come to create and people flock to experience. Artists create. Ideas spark. People act. Good things happen. But it doesn’t happen alone. Art needs an audience. Art needs supporters. Art needs us. Give a hand to creativity in the City of Lancaster. Buy a painting, give theater tickets, attend a concert, visit a musuem, take an art class, visit a craft fair, make a donation.
TAKE A CUE FROM OUR GENEROUS ART SPONSORS—
supporting the local art community in the City of Lancaster. Special thanks to these inspiring businesses who value the importance of creativity and help to keep Lancaster a dynamic city engergized by the power of the arts.

WE’RE GETTING A REPUTATION. THEY’RE CALLING US AN ‘ARTS DESTINATION.’ any of us who live in Lancaster are already in the know about the arts vibe that stretches beyond our galleries and buzzes through coffee shops or settles on porches. But word is getting out. This summer, a collaborative arts campaign highlighting Lancaster City Arts has started telling our stories to the whole region. People are talking about us from West Chester and Carlisle to Baltimore and DeKalb, Georgia. Now, more than ever, the art-seekers are coming. Being a destination is cool, and it brings in important dollars. But for those of us who live here, it’s about more than the shake-up-the-status-quo paintings or the urban edge of live cabaret. It’s about harnessing the power of the arts to do more. We need to understand the value in our many emerging artists; the businesses committing to our urban scene and the families choosing to build a life here. Today’s urbanism demands creativity to thrive. Lancaster’s power starts with our creative DNA. We’re lucky enough to be infused with creativity in our everyday lives. Our community’s inspired lifestyle attracts big thinkers and creates new possibilities. The Lancaster County Community Foundation identified this growing energy more than five years ago. Community conversations helped identify “the arts” as an area with the potential to catalyze change; an opportunity that was at a tipping point. The Community Foundation took action and “Building Community through the Arts,” a three-year, multi-million dollar investment, launched. Lancaster is already seeing the payoff. Three years of investment in the arts supported the collaborative regional arts campaign, a Public Arts manager and multiple powerful projects for major arts institutions. For art to change our community, the investment needed to go even deeper. Michelle Fogel, Mosaic Project coordinator at PCA&D, told us about one 14-year-old in their innovative program. Last spring, the girl was invited by her teacher to the Mosaic Project and to be part of an 8-week class at PCA&D.
Since her family arrived in Lancaster from the Dominican Republic, aunts and uncles had been chipping in to cover the cost of her art classes. When the economy took a dive, they weren’t able to continue. Through Mosaic, all of her classes were paid for and she received a scholarship to another class of her choice. Her mother was astounded and cried to Michelle on the phone. Thanks to the Mosaic Project her daughter’s passion for creativity and a career in design may now have changed from a dream to understanding a real path of study and a tangible goal. Poetry Paths, another project with wide-reaching community impact, has flourished in our schools engaging hundreds of students with the power of words and an equally empowering sense of success. This fall, Poetry Paths will come to life in our streets. Fifteen city sites invited neighbors and colleagues to work together selecting poetry and art that will become public art. Sculpture, benches, city walls—a new trail of inspiration will become part of our daily walk. A project this vast and this sophisticated can only happen in places steeped in creativity—like Lancaster. The potential in a tipping point ignites when our community leverages what is already working. More and more, private businesses are choosing to hang local art and hire local designers. Developers continue to invest in creative urban reuse. Our city continues to celebrate pianos on our streets. We are buying art and becoming museum members. We are showing up. Together, these actions demonstrate that art matters to us. This is when the investment pays off and things start to tip. The arts form an important platform for Lancaster. They are an essential building block in helping our community to think bigger. With creativity, innovation and vision at our core, we have the tools we need to generate creative solutions for our real problems. Perhaps in the future we can be even more than an arts destination. If we think big enough, the new urbanism of Lancaster can actually be shaped by our creative soul. GUEST WRITER, TRACY CUTLER

Julia Swartz PAINTBRUSHES 2011 OIL ON CANVAS 16" X 20" Julia paints her life. This is a crock of brushes that sits on her table beside her easel where she paints every day. To Julia they are as beautiful as a bouquet of flowers. While it is rewarding to see the pleased looks of customers as they view their commission for the first time, what Julia loves most is a blank canvas—an idea in her mind’s eye, an opportunity with no limits or boundaries.

“In drawing and painting I am compelled to quickly build a sense of form, the underlying structure, or the feeling of air or light as these qualities may strike me. It is with an economy of means that they are expressed in the fleeting moments alloted (moments in which either these visual aspects or my spirit are ever-changing).”

Soon, when you walk into Characters Pub, you’ll be greeted by eight graphite-on-paper renditions of some pretty famous characters. Katherine Hepburn for sure. And with any luck, Flash Gordon. But off-the-wall? Fig® introduces new proprietors Meghan Young & Jose Fuentes.
CHARACTERS WITH GRIT “If you don’t do it now, when are you going to do it?” Meghan trained in London, under one of only three master chefs in Great Britain. She was the first woman, the first American. Strength and survival were key. Jose, equally type A, insisted they set a date to have their own restaurant. Meghan picked her 35th birthday—June 16th: The new Characters opened on June 1st. CHARACTERS WITH PERSONALITY He’s a big motorcycle rider, fresh from LA, with a Red Sox addiction. She’s a consummate cook, looking to petition for a Whole Foods in Lancaster, with season Yankees tickets. A healthy rivalry on the latter, yes, but not as front and back of house: “We’re definitely chef-driven, but hospitality-driven, too. It is food first, but we want people to feel comfortable like they did before—and get an unforgettable experience, too.”
CHARACTERS WITH CONSCIENCE Working in New York, it was driven in: “If you don’t change you die; people want to do the right things. To be conscientious in Lancaster is to support local; it’s living a good way hand-to-mouth.” Some things you will never see on the menu? Chilean Sea bass, sword or sail fish. “No Old Man and the Sea, here.” CHARACTERS WITH WIT If the new Characters were itself a character, who would it be? Jose: “Ralph Macchio, or Ryan from ‘Sixteen Candles’ ” Meghan: “Us! We’re both definitely a couple of characters —and this brings out our best!”

SOMETHING EXCITING IS HAPPENING IN OUR SCHOOLS . Students are getting their hands dirty. They’re thinking about problems and coming up with solutions that can’t be found in textbooks. Here in Lancaster, we have the gift of giving our young minds the outlets and opportunities to express themselves through art, music, theater and writing. Our schools and extra curricular programs provide a creative outlet, a place to shine, and for some especially talented pupils, a stepping stone into future careers. So whether they’re preparing for a gallery show, designing posters, or just bringing home something special for the kitchen fridge—these young artists are going places. And the art programs at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, Millersville University, Lancaster Country Day School, and Lancaster Mennonite School are taking them there.

WRITE FROM THE HEART WORKSHOPS empower and enlighten by awakening us to the wonder of writing, not the rules. Melissa’s mission: to keep creativity alive in a world losing sight of its soul . To help people thrive by breathing life into intellectual possibility. Through warmth, kindness and a touch of mischief, she cultivates creative energy. She guides us to look beyond our fear, tap into the creative process, and love the art of writing. Not for anyone else, but ourselves.

La Petite Patisserie has moved to the Historic East Side. Donna’s melt-inyour-mouth comforts tantalize with each nibble—a reason locals confess they are amazing and sinful. We met with Donna for a bit of tasty insight...

THE FRENCH ARE KNOWN FOR QUALITY CUISINE AND THERE IS NO COMPROMISE ON DESSERT. HOW DO YOU STAY AUTHENTIC TO THE FRENCH STANDARDS? Making everything from scratch with authentic French pastry techniques and I use as many of the finest local ingredients as I can. Most of the chocolate comes from Wilbur Chocolate and the dairy products are from Maplehofe Dairy Farm Store. Sourcing locally is important to me and my packaging is also as sustainable as possible.
WE’VE HEARD THAT BAKING IS A SCIENCE, BUT YOUR PASTRIES ARE MORE LIKE ART. ARE YOU MORE SCIENTIST OR ARTIST? Accurate measurement of ingredients is crucial in baking, so that aspect of it is definitely science. But nothing can take the place of experience and intuition. There is no way to describe the way a dough should feel, the exact amount of sweetness for a batter, the aroma that suggests a little more time in the oven. That comes from years of baking experience. A recipe is only as good as the artist that adds a little bit of her heart to everything she bakes. YOU’VE MOVED TO A NEW LOCATION. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT? With more space I am able to offer a wider variety of French pastries while maintaining the everyday favorites. To quench your thirst, there will be a nice selection of La Petite Patisserie teas and coffees with rotating flavors. Also, be sure to stop by and try our French breads which will be coming soon! U D HOME IS WHERE THE WAREHOUSE IS Jeremy Waak & Angie Hohenadel transform a forgotten city space into an urban retreat. A REMINDER THAT OUR LIVES ARE WORKS OF ART, this couple saw their biggest canvas yet, a forgotten warehouse. PCA&D professor, Jeremy and Warwick High School art teacher Angie wanted to give back to the city they love. “It pains us to see neglected and abandoned properties. Everything is life and should be held in the highest regard.” Examining their immediate neighborhood, a number of warehouses sat vacant. With patience, a seller was finally found. A LABOR OF LOVE As a sculpture artist, Jeremy needed a place to worka space to create. A larger destiny presented itself. “We saw an ugly book, with a great story inside, big enough for living and working.” Catalyst, friend and architect, Richard Levengood, helped them realize the transformation was possible and the renovation was set into motion. Sometimes long stretches, months,
went by before the next big reward. “I remember pulling square nails from boards for days.” A tedious task, but the end result was worth it!” AN ARCHITECTURAL BELLWETHER The message: this transformation is resoundingly positive for our city. The truth: not all of us have the ability to see beyond an austere renovation. “Its about cooperating with the existing.” With the world’s eye on the environment, there is nothing greener than retrofitting a building like this or diverting material culture from the landfill. Lancaster has nothing short of a collection of historical treasures to adopt. HOME IS WHERE THE WAREHOUSE IS Hailing from Nebraska, Jeremy thought Lancaster was a stepping stone to a megacity. He found an

incomparable utilitarian appeal. “Lancaster is human scale. Nothing is too far: the market, the arts, the culture, the restaurants and bars. We rarely need our car.” For Angie, the people and history hold a special place in her heart. “The scale suits me well, I have the chance to bump into friends and family everywhere I go, I love that.” And so- Poncho the pooch, Bird and Phoenix (ironically felines) and the couple settle into the warehouse to continue building memories in a once forgotten space. Want more about the transformation? Attend Angie’s art exhibit: scheduled for September’s first Friday at MU 42.
