Unexpected
Welcome to the 24th issue of Fig® Lancaster. On the following pages, we take a creative look at all of the reasons to shop locally for the holidays. There’s something magical about our downtown this time of year: the strings of lights, the texture of old brick, the new neighbors; and the welcoming, knowledgeable shop owners who greet you like old friends. The City transforms into an urban wonderland—a maze of beguiling streets and treasures beyond every corner, waiting to be discovered. It is this spirit of novel discovery which informs our holiday editorial: a piece of visual storytelling inspired by the works of Lewis Carroll and the City of Lancaster’s many hidden wonders. So why not stay Downtown for the holidays this shopping season? Choose responsible spending, broad options, and lots of good tidings and joy. Hop in line with your other Lancaster fellows who have already unwrapped this gift. Pass through the looking glass and into Lancaster’s Wonderland. We would like to thank our many retail partners, community supporters, sponsors and friends for joining with us to make Fig® a reality. It’s been an honor to collaborate with you over the past 6 years. Enjoy! Deborah Brandt, Editor Meet the entire talented Fig Team at figlancaster.com

LOCAL IS IN, NO MATTER WHAT THE SEASON. Fall harvest has drawn to a close, but Lancaster Central Market is still going—and growing—strong. Hearty winter vegetables like leeks, parsnips and potatoes brave December’s frosts. Root vegetables store well year round and make a great base for comforting winter stews. Canned salsas and jams capture the memory of summer. Central Market is also Lancaster’s holiday marketplace. Seasonal flower arrangements turn a simple table setting into a celebration. Wreaths make a welcoming first impression for visiting friends and family. Chocolates, fudge, and peppermints tuck perfectly into stockings—if they aren’t intercepted by a rampant sweet tooth en route. So whether you’re in search of history or a new holiday tradition, find it all at Lancaster Central Market.

Voices:
the mint
“The Mint's songs have unforgettable melodies and catchy hooks. They are a great live band.” —Helen Leicht, WXPN
16
figlancaster.com facebook.com/figlancaster
THE MINT DROPS THE "R" WORD
A lot can happen in 40 minutes. For The Mint, it’s a live show that takes an audience to the gates, an organic relationship that transcends the stage and makes manifest high standards of spirit and creativity. And yes, responsibility—a credo so core to the band that it’s become simply the “R” word. Much more than friends coming together in the basement to rock’n’roll, it’s a vow to forever air to listeners the vibe and talent of each musician. But even more importantly, the “brand” of The Mint is a living, breathing entity that is bigger than what they could individually do.
David Dye
Helen Leicht
MEET WXPN AND EXPERIENCE A DIFFERENT KIND OF MUSIC RADIO STATION. WHO WE ARE First and foremost, we're music fans. And for more than two decades, countless fellow fans, musicians, and business supporters have joined us in building a community that's uniquely focused on celebrating music discovery and connecting artists with new audiences. WHAT WE DO WXPN provides an unparalleled musical listening experience featuring contemporary music from many genres including rock, indie, folk, blues, R&B, and alt-country. Our playlist is broad and comprised of international, national, and local artists ranging from brand new on the scene to legendary in stature.
“We’re just the messenger,” says lead singer Adam Kowalczyk.
HOW WE DO IT WXPN is a member-supported public radio
What does this “messenger” have to tell us? When you see a show, you’ll know. It’s all about “affecting people.” The Mint from its infancy has been a transition into the more mature meat of their music and philosophy, explains bassist Nate Jones (Jonesey). “We’ve been given a gift and not to do anything with it and share it with other people would be selfish.” And “selfish” is a foreign word in The Mint’s lyrical repertoire. Their emotional integrity, and that of their music, makes the term untranslatable. Whether they’re playing to five people —or 5,000. Whether across the country—or in Lancaster—the place they “call home,” Adam, Nate Van Name, and Jonesy all agree. “People are listening. And the energy doesn’t lie.”

WORLD CAFE® WITH DAVID DYE Mon-Fri 2-4pm
Host David Dye serves up an eclectic mix of music from blues, rock, and world, to folk and alternative country, with live performances and interviews with celebrated and emerging artists including Joni Mitchell, Black Keys, Dave Matthews, Elvis Costello, Robert Plant, Spoon, Iron & Wine, Neko Case, Paul McCartney, Ani Difranco, LCD Soundsystem, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, REM, Feist, Yo Yo Ma, Lyle Lovett, Fleet Foxes, Moby, Taj Mahal, and Coldplay, among thousands of others.
The Mint is not a product. Not a formula. It’s a life form, one that always leaves people at the gates, wanting more. The anthropomorphic “R” word in action.

Experience-fed, veteran party planner Lori Hemphill always leaves her clients satiated. And not just with a fancy cake. From the save-the-date to guests’ arrival, whether weddings or kids’ parties, she connects all the dots. First, she listens. Then, she personalizes. Finally, she gives the ultimate gift. Peace of mind. Now that’s one fabulous cake topper..

Loud and clear, this is what people exclaim when they enter the Party Perfect wonderland. Paper flowers. Chinese lanterns. Parasols. Crystals. Local artists’ jewelry. And yes, even sock monkeys. THE FULTON, LIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE Once known as “The Queen of the American Roadhouses,” the Fulton Theatre played host to hundreds of traveling acts from the mid 1800s through the roaring ‘20s. All the legendary performers of the day from Sarah Bernhardt to Al Jolson to Louis Armstrong graced the Fulton’s stage. Today the Fulton bustles with the relentless energy of an incredibly talented staff of theater artists and technicians. Many people don’t realize the “Grand Old Lady of Prince Street” is no longer a touring house, but a nationally respected regional theater company. All year long this dedicated crew works to create the vibrant theatrical art you see on stage. Here the Fulton’s production team is assembled near the Fulton in the old coffee roasting warehouse where all the sets are built, props are assembled and scenic backdrops are painted. Inside you will find gallons and gallons of paint, endless rows of wooden flats and 2x4s, a countless variety of tools and, on this day, a tremendous Baltimore cityscape of orange, red and yellow, which will become one of several backdrops for the holiday production of “Hairspray”. The Fulton’s scenic artist, Rebecca Pancoast, stands barefoot on the massive sheet of muslin. She holds a three-foot bamboo handled paintbrush in one hand; in the other, the graphic rendering of the urban row houses and billboards she uses as her guide. Despite its size, Rebecca’s massive paintbrush glides gracefully across the canvas, set in motion by the touch of a trained expert. When she is finished, it will be up to the rest of the team to ensure her work flies safely above the historic stage, where it will become the dynamic backdrop for the actors in “Hairspray”. As for the rest of the show? It’s coming together, piece by piece, right in the heart of Lancaster through the work of dozens of craftspeople, designers, backstage crew, apprentices and actors. You won’t want to miss it.
Hairspray runs November 30 - December 31 717.397.7425 or thefulton.org for tickets
8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Music and Lyrics by Marc Shaiman, Lyrics by Scott Wittman.
Just in time for the holidays comes Broadway's big fat musical hit. Jump back to early 1960s Baltimore, where pleasantly plump Tracy Turnblad has big hair, an even bigger heart, and a huge dream to be a dancer on the Corny Collins Show. This musical-comedy blockbuster inspired a film and swept the Tony Awards... and audiences off their feet. As The New York Times said, "If life were everything it should be, it would be more like ‘Hairspray’. It's irresistible!"

ART YOU CAN USE.
“ You can hang it on the wall, or eat out of it.”
You can’t eat the wooden eggs that Cindy used to paint. But they did hatch into her current painting of winsome wooden bowls. Coated with sealer, you can safely eat anything out of them. Even eggs. Perfect for urban living.
"The arts are really catching on here.” A bird in the hand may be worth two in the bush, but now that Cindy’s gallery is on West King, and not Bird-In-Hand, it’s an outlet for local Downtown denizens who want funkier, more modern translations of her work.
“Do you want to see my ‘Friend Room’?”
A new gallery means new people asking to show their work. No problem. Cindy’s intimate, adjacent space nestles everything from notecards to a grandfather clock to aprons hand-made by poverty-stricken Nairobi women. Cindy’s bumper sticker? “Just Say Yes.”
“I meet them where they are.”
It’s half the reason Cindy’s here—and 100% sincere. She opens her door not only to buying customers, but to people who need lunch. Encouragement. A hug. Or simply a splash of joy in their lives. CINDY SCHLOSSER, ARTIST JEREMY HESS PHOTOGRAPHERS / JH

AN ARTFUL SEASON ♥ HOLIDAY FIG ® FIND ART FROM A DOWNTOWN GALLERY MAKES AN UNEXPECTED GIFT FOR ANY ART ENTHUSIAST
The new addition to Gallery Row. When describing his work, Freiman quips: “My desire is to produce work that is more than pigment on canvas, but a deep expression of beauty, memory, and hope.” 142 North Prince Street freimanstoltzfus.com
We all fancy ourselves artists come December. We paint our houses in colored light. Children create transient sculptures from experimental media—produce, twigs, and snow. Moms become interior designers, placing ornaments just-so on the tree. Relatives suddenly fancy themselves professional photographers at holiday gatherings, arranging family members into strategic vignettes. But what's left when the season is over? Give memorably this holiday. Giving a piece of original art supports locals artists, the creative community, and keeps the creative spirit alive, year round. So here's to the New Year and the many galleries that make Lancaster a thriving arts town.
A wide variety of art & craft for the holiday gift-giving season. Affordable artwork for the budgetminded. Representing 30 local and regional artists. First Friday monthly exhibitions 5pm to 9pm.

FRESH FACES
LEMON STREET MARKET IS:
Left to Right, Front to Back: Lolita Haverstick, Trish Haverstick, Kharran Cattell, Juan Jaramillo, and Laura Sisay
“WE ALL GREW UP COOKING.” Kharran never had an Easy-Bake oven. Instead, she baked homemade cakes in her grandmother’s coal fired stove. No box mix. No recipe. Always good eating. Now she can cook anything from apples to zucchini and she’s happy to share a little how-to. “IT’S ABOUT GREAT INGREDIENTS.” Pastured eggs; grass fed meats; whole grain and gluten-free baked goods made locally. Laura worked on an organic farm and now sources produce from local family growers because fresh means flavor. Juan knows raw milk is beneficial, but he drinks it for the taste.
“SHE CAN’T BE ALLERGIC TO EVERYTHING.” Well, Trish’s daughter was, and with Lolita’s help, they developed a delicious repertoire of meals free of a dozen allergens and now they are stocking the Food To Go fridge with their goodies. “THE FOOD EXPERIENCE.” As a “Healthy Grocer,” they of course carry tofu. But yesterday’s bean curd is today’s sustainable, fair trade, organic triumvirate. Food ways converging. Lemon Street Market provides authentic food and real answers for your food experience.

Authentic Mommalicious
The authentics:
alicia byler & debbie serdy
“WHAT’S BETTER THAN AN ORGAN IN A JAR?” Mommalicious owner Alicia Byler poses this quirky question while reminiscing about a shark suspended in a jar of fermaldahyde, a favorite “oddity” that she recently sold in her shop of funky items. “It’s amazing what people make,” she marvels. How true this axiom is, too, for Alicia and My Aunt Debbie’s proprietor, Debbie Serdy, who together in four short years have made collaborating a tangible way to bolster the local art scene, to model for downtown retailers how they can help advance Lancaster artisans, also. How they do it ranges the gamut from the pair’s shared building, allowing them to save on expenses and remain open seven days a week; to lending knitters and crocheters the poles outside
their store to “cozy up” with their fabrications; to offering a local artist, each month, the front window to design with an original installation. Or spearheading events, like the 300 block of North Queen Street’s “Rock the Block.” The party started as a way to say “thanks” to their customers, but now the yearly bash—featuring local bands, foods, and artists—closes the street for a day. And opens the doors to new patrons for the entire neighborhood. “I like to look at it as a community event,” says Alicia. And though challenging, with monthly meetings of core shop owners, it’s another aspect of community service. “Everybody’s busy, but we still do it.” read on! visit figlancaster.com/authentics

That’s why it’s vital to play out our time deliberately, to always be mindful of the many ways to savor to the max our urban lifestyle. Fortunately, as we ourselves head down—downtown—we experience a similar wonder at the gift of choice. With a wide range of options spanning a space that is conveniently circumscribed, but far from narrow, we enjoy great latitude about where to spend not only our time, but also our resources. Time is money claims yet another cliche. Luckily, Lancaster’s longitude can be expressed in both minutes and seconds—the time it takes to stroll leisurely and easily from block to block. From hip to elegant. From vintage to ultramodern. From green to every color imaginable. From salt of the earth to out of this world. Organic. Vivacious. At all times alive.
Eat me. Drink me. As Alice followed these curious instructions, she grew both small and big. Indeed, Lancaster is a small city. But one with big benefits, which is precisely why so many people all over are making yet another choice, the one to move up to downsized cities like ours. Never pretentious; eminently walkable; intimate; informal; and welcoming, yet churning with an electricity that radiates sophistication, we get to live large. As insiders, we develop friendships with our neighbors, local shop proprietors, restauranteurs, gallery owners, artists and fellow downtown denizens. As outsiders, we pause for impromptu chats on street corners and check our hectic pace with window shopping and First Fridays, Music Fridays and everyday entertainment. And of course, to lounge at sidewalk cafes and coffee shops, very happy to indulge in those appetizing invitations of “eat me” and “drink me”—those all around good spirits. As Alice decided to plunge into that rabbit hole, to see whereever that white rabbit with his watch could be headed, she never once considered how she was to get out again. In Lancaster, why ever would anyone want to, when there is so much curiosity to be sated, so many opportunities to wonder about just what will happen next...

WE ALL KNOW THE FAIRYTALE. And we know, too, that time holds many cliches. It’s the wisest counsellor. It’s what prevents everything from happening at once. It flies when you’re having fun. At times, it even seems to stand still. And perhaps most obviously—but at the same time often overlooked—you can never save it to spend on another day.

KING FOR A DAY. RESULTS UNTIL KINGDOM COME. “I breathe new life into every event.” With longtime gala experience, Don Blyler knows that functions last only a few hours. So each moment must be a wow moment with an outcome that endures. For corporations, to better them. For non-profits, to empower them. For both, success to build on year after year. And for Lancaster, a hopeful event king that’s here for good. IN AND OUT. “People enter knowing it
will be a great event; they walk away knowing the same.”
This is because Don has style. Professionalism. And the insight to consider flow; minute details; unique angles; personalization; clients’ goals. To plan for what might happen. This way, what always happens brims with positive energy. The beginning. The end. And in between. But never middle of the road. DON BLYLER WAS HERE. “I put my stamp on
it. I'm here. I do events. And I'm great at it.”
Based in Lancaster, Don Blyler plans events. But soon he plans to expand across the country. And around the world. Though modest, he has every right to believe this. Because his clients and guests believe in him. From college flings to a 18-month/8-city traveling art exhibit, he has always turned the party out. So who’s in?

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON make a toast to shopping local with libations from Lancaster wineries. Currently there are more than 140 wineries in the state of Pennsylvania. Lancaster county is unique in that it provides nutrient rich, welldrained soils as well as a climate that provides a long growing season, similar to many parts of Europe. In fact, our latitude is the same as parts of Italy, Spain, Greece and just South of France.

Whether it’s the Mom who never asks for anything, the dad who’s received one too many neckties, or the deserving loved one who already seems to have everything she needs, they are the people in our lives who give generously of themselves, yet ask for little in return. Now that we’ve reached the season for reflecting back on all that we’ve been given this year, we have a chance to show our gratitude by giving our loved ones a token of thanks. When you think of those special people on your list this year, consider all the gifts they deserve that won’t ever fit into a box: love, acceptance, self-empowerment, health. Or, as we like to call them, yoga. Yoga is not just an exercise. It is a gift, a lifestyle of self-expression, empowerment, and well-being that allows every one of us to do something greater than ourselves by taking a moment
for ourselves. At Evolution Power Yoga, we believe that you already possess everything you need to be fulfilled and content, regardless of your current strength, flexibility, or mobility. Our job is simply to make sure you have the tools—patience, self-compassion, security, and confidence—to become your most inspired and authentic self. This year, consider giving the gift that could truly make a difference in the life of a loved one. And as you reflect back on the special people in your life who are deserving of something more, perhaps you’ll even discover the most important person of all: You.

GOOD THINGS DON’T JUST HAPPEN; THEY HAPPEN BY DESIGN. Taglines are tacked on at the end. But for Moxie House, the creators and publishers of Fig® Magazine, “Design for Good,” always comes first. As a gateway to the projects that this design and marketing firm undertakes, it’s a deliberate philosophy that informs why and how they do the work that they do. But also where. This is why Moxie House has moved its studio to the Historic East Side Suites, a stunning renovation of a century-old street scape—and an innovation in the effort to remake a neighborhood, to give this forgotten Lancaster area a name, a special identity to make it a place of choice for business owners,
homeowners, retail and the arts. Expanding Lancaster’s footprint, definitely. But also very clearly manifesting Moxie’s notion that people are moving from larger areas into smaller, hyperlocal communities. And Lancaster, a City Authentic, can be the umbrella theme for this evolution even within its own perimeter. Beyond Lancaster, Fig’s footprints are now expanding—branching out into other unique downtowns and cities that have been inspired by Lancaster’s progressive edge. They’ve seen the product, and they want it, too. Yes, products are by definition manufactured. But Fig® has never needed to create what Lancaster already is. A small yet thriving; diverse; and very distinctive urban community

where residents live together, work together, play together and stand together. What it does create is a platform to easily experience what is so attractive and addictive about this lifestyle. Making it tangible. Something people can hold in their hands and feel. It’s only natural, then, requiring no savvy marketing techniques, that the placement of this product’s makers should be right in the thick of its mission. Its clients. Its neighbors. And its friends. Allowing them to not only be nimble in their creative, but also in making more and more footprints as ambassadors to the City of Lancaster Get to know the studio: visit moxiehouse.com Find out about Historic East Side: eastsidelanc.com Visit other Fig® Communities: figmediapa.com and figwestchester.com THE CREATIVE TEAM SETTLES INTO AN urbandwelling.figlancaster.com INSPIRING SPACE.
