welcome home MEDIA

T

here’s nothing quite like Media during the holidays.

State Street shines with twinkle lights and holiday décor, and store windows glitter with the promise of one-of-a-kind treasures.

You’ll find friends and neighbors shopping for gifts and treats, celebrating in area restaurants, or strolling amidst the glow of the Festival of Lights in Rose Tree Park. With the warmth and spirit of the season upon us, somehow a visit to Media just feels like coming home.

Town, you’re supporting growth, prosperity, and change on a global scale, too. It’s also a time to think about giving to those in need, which is why we celebrate people like Jennifer Koenig McDevitt of Fabulous Shoe Night and Shawnee Johnson of The Cedar Chest and their efforts to make the world a better place. (For inspiration, see our Giving Back Guide on page 22.) As we ring in the New Year with friends and family under Media’s own ball drop, dancing to live music on State Street, we’ll give thanks to the many who contribute to making Media “everybody’s hometown.”

This is the time to rediscover the magic of childhood with Santa’s Arrival at the Courthouse, a trip to Santa’s Village on State Street, or a carriage ride through the decorated streets of town. It’s the season to celebrate all things local—and by shopping in America’s First Fair Trade

authentic Shawnee Johnson, The Cedar Chest

FEMININE. FASHIONABLE. FUN. Shawnee Johnson of The Cedar Chest embodies these qualities, as does her vintage and consignment boutique. For twelve years, The Cedar Chest has been a beloved shopping destination for the area’s “economical fashionistas.” Shawnee puts her eye for fashion to work when purchasing and selecting top-notch vintage pieces and once-loved clothing, working with consignors and designers. “It warms my heart to have people really enjoy their purchases,” Shawnee said.

In her years at The Cedar Chest, Shawnee has watched her community grow. She saw little girls who once shopped with their mothers grow up and move away for school, then return to the area to shop on their own. Likewise, over the years she has helped some of the same men select gifts for the women in their lives—mothers, girlfriends, and wives. “Everything comes full circle,” Shawnee said. “Some of my dearest friends are people I’ve met at the store.”

While some choose to earn cash or store credit for their consignments, donated revenue goes directly to Shawnee’s nonprofit, A Ravenous Heart, which was established to aid children in war-torn Liberia. “It’s a humble organization,” said Shawnee. “But if I can help even a few people, it can have a domino effect.” Shawnee loves that The Cedar Chest brings so much joy to those who find their treasures within her walls, and also to people in need of help overseas. “I do it for the love.” LEARN MORE :

KEEP YOUR RESOLUTIONS Personal trainer George Loving knows that the best way to meet your New Year’s fitness goals is to start early. With a season of celebration and decadence right around the corner, some might trade carrots for cookies and workouts for parties, figuring that it can’t hurt to get back to jogging in January. But imagine going to those holiday events with a strategy, enjoying the spirit of the season while staying on track. “Clients get the most success by getting ahead of the holidays,” said George. “You’re better prepared when you get a head start.” George believes in helping his clients set realistic goals for a healthy lifestyle: enjoy that seasonal fare, but with a game plan. Since opening the doors at Fitness at 5 East, George’s clients have lost inches, lost weight, and increased muscle mass. “Everyone is here for a different reason,” said George. He works with people who want to bulk up, trim down, recover greater mobility, or train for sports. With more than 13 years of experience and a client base that ranges in age from 23 to 73, George specializes in individual exercise and nutritional guidance, fitness assessment, weight loss, strength, and flexibility. Fitness at 5 East has grown into a new location, right around the corner at 3 East Baltimore Pike. Featuring state-of-the-art Cybex equipment, the new studio will offer a larger workout space in a freshly renovated environment.

gathering together the

holiday cheer See what Media’s residents are saying about celebrating (the local way)! “ I do every ounce of my holiday shopping here. I can find a gift for everyone in Media.” – Eileen Mielcarek, The Aesthetic Center at Mielcarek

“I love the town at night when all the lights are on outlining the buildings and the trolley is slowly moving up State Street. You almost can see a Norman Rockwell painting begin to take shape.” – Bryan Messick, Media Business Authority & Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union

“Every December I look forward to strolling State Street on a cold wintry eve. I love how all the festive window displays lure me in to purchase something for myself when I am supposed to be Christmas gift shopping for family and friends!”

“I can’t think of a more perfect town to grow up in than Media.” – Dr. Dean Sophocles, Providence Dental Associates

“Having grown up in a small town in New England, I was not enamored with the prospect of living and working in a metropolitan area. Media changed that for me. Minutes from the city, but with a smalltown feel. It has been a wonderful place to live, to work, and to raise our kids.” – Jeffry Cadorette, Media Real Estate

–Tara Endicott, Burlap and Bean

“Holiday shopping in Media seems stressless and fun... our customers seem to always find what they want. Even up to the last minutes of shopping, we are still having fun.” – Denise Yocco, Seven Stones Gallery

“I love how the buildings are outlined in lights and how the music is softly playing in the background along State Street. They’re small things, but they really enhance that small-town holiday feeling.” – Ralph Nardell, Ralph Nardell Photography

“I love the white lights! For me they symbolize the light within each of us that we remember to share with others during the holiday season.” – Paul Downie, Community Arts Center “My favorite thing about Media during the holidays is the classic and festive backdrop of State Street when it’s lit and bustling with activity.” – Amy Loving, Starry Eyed Optical “I have so many fond memories of the holidays in Media over the years. As a kid I loved sledding at Glen Providence Park at the West End of State Street. And I can picture State Street ablaze with Christmas lights, and decked out with wreaths and greens. I’m now lucky to rekindle this same wonderment through the eyes of my two children, who are four and six. As we walk down State Street as a family, instead of looking where they are going, they are looking straight up—taking note of the beautiful decorations overhead.”

“Even though my kids are growing up, I still look forward to seeing Santa on the fire engine!” – Jennifer Koenig McDevitt, Fabulous Shoe Night

– Fran Wolff, Wolff’s Apple House

“ The streets glisten with twinkling lights, Christmas carols are playing, families shop and stroll along State Street and everyone is home to be with family and friends for the holidays.” – Loic Barnieu, Barnieu Restaurants

“Holiday lights on State Street, carriage rides and Santa’s Village are some of my favorite things, along with shopping at local shops.” – Zubair Khan, Executive Director, Media Business Authority

“We love how many customers take the time to tell us that they’re making a conscious effort to shop locally and support the retailers in Media.” – Monica and Kevin Schramm, local home + gifts

Thinking of others. Finding the perfect gift. Knowing what matters. It’s the time of year when we take stock of who and what we care about. When we make a donation, we’re giving more than a check. We’re creating community. Community is not only the place where we live, but also the way we live. Consider the gift of community this year: donate to one of these Media nonprofits. AT MEDIA REAL ESTATE COMPANY, our core business is providing homes to residents and businesses who have the desire to be in or around the tri-state area. We take that very seriously. We also believe it is important to give back to the community that we work in. We take that very seriously too. Below is a sampling of the organizations that we support. In many different ways, they are critical in adding to the culture and to the health of our community. As Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.”

“On behalf of everyone at our company to each of you, we wish you the very best of the holiday season. It would be our hope that the heightened joy, connection with family, and desire to reach out and help others that often is prevalent at this time of year stays with you in all of the days that follow.” The Media Real Estate Team

rocky run yMcA I OFTEN TELL PEOPLE THAT THE YMCA SAVED MY LIFE. Our family first became involved with the Rocky Run YMCA in autumn of 2011 when my oldest son, Jack, then two, began taking Mommy-and-Me gymnastics and swim classes. I was able to confidently leave my sixmonth-old twins, Kathryn and Will, in the Kid Zone, knowing they were safe while I spent one-on-one time with Jack. Often, during the class, I would look around enviously at the other fit moms. At that point in my life I was at my highest nonpregnant weight, and feeling less than confident about myself. As a stay-at-home mom with a husband who (although extremely supportive) travelled frequently, and three children under the age of three, I fear I even began to suffer from depression. That Christmas, I told my husband what I wanted as my gift: a YMCA family membership. Upon joining,

I discovered the excitement and variety of the challenging group fitness classes. My favorite classes included Les Mills Body Combat, Zumba, and a ‘Core Challenge’ class offered on Saturday mornings.

THE YMCA

SAVED MY LIFE.

From New Year’s Day to mid- April of 2012, I had lost 18 pounds. It was then that I discovered that (surprise!) I was pregnant with my fourth baby. I managed to keep my pregnancy weight gain to a healthy 23 pounds. Meanwhile, Jack enjoyed the YMCA’s intramural t-ball and soccer programs, and I got to bond with the twins in Mommy-and-Me class. Our fourth baby, Brandt, was born in December of 2012. Less than a year later, I feel better, healthier, and happier than I have in my adult life. I weigh 33 pounds less than I did when I joined the YMCA in December of 2011, but I have gained so much more. -JeSSICA RADCLIFFe

Fig® proudly supports Fair Trade and local economies

CHANGING THE WORLD, ONE GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT AT A TIME

giving back fig® celebrates people who make a difference “I very much believe that

we can change the world one neighborhood at a time.”

It started with a bad day, a rainy night, a pair of cowboy boots—and the need to get out of the house. Media resident Jennifer Koenig McDevitt, a former nurse and stay-at-home mom to three boys, pulled on her favorite boots and met a friend on State Street for a little commiseration. As Jennifer said, “Sometimes you just need to get out and wear shoes that make you feel fabulous.” From this an idea was born that has grown exponentially: inviting women to wear their favorite shoes (clogs or stilettos —anything goes!) and socialize while contributing to local charities and their local economy. “The very heart and soul of Fabulous Shoe Night is to have a local chapter that hosts events in a local business and gives dollars back to a local charity. We have to help where we live,” said Jennifer. “I very much believe that we can change the world one neighborhood at a time.” Fabulous Shoe Night attendees pay $25 to attend events hosted in area businesses, a cost that includes appetizers, drink specials, and a $15 donation to a chosen local charity. Members of Fabulous Shoe Night pay a nominal annual fee, which allows access to discounts on local shopping, salon services, and more. In the span of a year, Fabulous Shoe Night has expanded to 18 chapters across the country, reaching as far as San Francisco and Las Vegas.

Jennifer Koenig McDevitt Founder, Fabulous Shoe Night

“We’re redefining philanthropy,” Jennifer said, who sees Fabulous Shoe Night becoming a nationwide trend. “We can all make a difference.” For a great reason to get your shoes out of the closet, learn more at fabulousshoenight.com.

FF Providence Dental Associates TOP Dentist Philadelphia Magazine

PROVIDENCE DENTAL ASSOCIATES “Painless dentist: upstairs.” At Providence Dental Associates, this signage is a promise. Dean Sophocles, DMD, has been proud to continue a tradition in family dentistry that his father started more than 40 years ago. “My dad had an extremely soft touch,” said Dr. Dean. “People sought him out because of his delicate sensibility.” This level of gentle, skilled care meets the highest quality in staff, training, and equipment at Providence Dental, offering patients “state-of-the-art, high-end services with no surprises.” With the addition of Scott Nakamura, DMD, in 2011, who practices periodontics and advanced restorative dentistry, the practice now provides a wide range of services. “We have patients from three to 93.” Both doctors practice cosmetic

and aesthetic dentistry, addressing the appearance of teeth and gums. The doctors place importance on spending time with patients and thorough explanation of procedures. “When you get up, you know what we found and how we fixed it,” said Dr. Dean. “I take these relationships seriously, and I want the best for our patients.” With this philosophy, it’s no surprise that Dr. Dean was recognized as a top dentist by Main Line Today and Philadelphia Magazine. He has also held an Assistant Professorship at Penn Dental for nearly a decade, passing on the wisdom of his experience to the next generation of practitioners. Dr. Dean was born and raised in Wallingford, and Providence Dental Associates supports

the local community by sponsoring events, collecting items for the Media Food Bank, and offering dental specials (like discounted teeth whitening) to those who bring in coats or canned goods to help those in need. “I think we’re all very proud of this community, and we want Providence Dental Associates to be part of that.”
