For twelve years, The Cedar Chest has been a beloved shopping destination for the area’s “economical fashionistas.” Shawnee puts her eye for fashion to work when purchasing and selecting top-notch vintage pieces and once-loved clothing, working with consignors and designers. “It warms my heart to have people really enjoy their purchases,” Shawnee said.
In her years at The Cedar Chest, Shawnee has watched her community grow. She saw little girls who once shopped with their mothers grow up and move away for school, then return to the area to shop on their own. Likewise, over the years she has helped some of the same men select gifts for the women in their lives—mothers, girlfriends, and wives. “Everything comes full circle,” Shawnee said. “Some of my dearest friends are people I’ve met at the store.”

rocky run yMcA I OFTEN TELL PEOPLE THAT THE YMCA SAVED MY LIFE. Our family first became involved with the Rocky Run YMCA in autumn of 2011 when my oldest son, Jack, then two, began taking Mommy-and-Me gymnastics and swim classes. I was able to confidently leave my sixmonth-old twins, Kathryn and Will, in the Kid Zone, knowing they were safe while I spent one-on-one time with Jack. Often, during the class, I would look around enviously at the other fit moms. At that point in my life I was at my highest nonpregnant weight, and feeling less than confident about myself. As a stay-at-home mom with a husband who (although extremely supportive) travelled frequently, and three children under the age of three, I fear I even began to suffer from depression. That Christmas, I told my husband what I wanted as my gift: a YMCA family membership. Upon joining,
I discovered the excitement and variety of the challenging group fitness classes. My favorite classes included Les Mills Body Combat, Zumba, and a ‘Core Challenge’ class offered on Saturday mornings.

From New Year’s Day to mid- April of 2012, I had lost 18 pounds. It was then that I discovered that (surprise!) I was pregnant with my fourth baby. I managed to keep my pregnancy weight gain to a healthy 23 pounds. Meanwhile, Jack enjoyed the YMCA’s intramural t-ball and soccer programs, and I got to bond with the twins in Mommy-and-Me class. Our fourth baby, Brandt, was born in December of 2012. Less than a year later, I feel better, healthier, and happier than I have in my adult life. I weigh 33 pounds less than I did when I joined the YMCA in December of 2011, but I have gained so much more. -JeSSICA RADCLIFFe

It started with a bad day, a rainy night, a pair of cowboy boots—and the need to get out of the house. Media resident Jennifer Koenig McDevitt, a former nurse and stay-at-home mom to three boys, pulled on her favorite boots and met a friend on State Street for a little commiseration. As Jennifer said, “Sometimes you just need to get out and wear shoes that make you feel fabulous.” From this an idea was born that has grown exponentially: inviting women to wear their favorite shoes (clogs or stilettos —anything goes!) and socialize while contributing to local charities and their local economy. “The very heart and soul of Fabulous Shoe Night is to have a local chapter that hosts events in a local business and gives dollars back to a local charity. We have to help where we live,” said Jennifer. “I very much believe that we can change the world one neighborhood at a time.” Fabulous Shoe Night attendees pay $25 to attend events hosted in area businesses, a cost that includes appetizers, drink specials, and a $15 donation to a chosen local charity. Members of Fabulous Shoe Night pay a nominal annual fee, which allows access to discounts on local shopping, salon services, and more. In the span of a year, Fabulous Shoe Night has expanded to 18 chapters across the country, reaching as far as San Francisco and Las Vegas.
