Home for the Holidays

A very Media holiday

WHY IS MEDIA THE BEST AT THE HOLIDAY SEASON?

“One of my favorite holiday traditions is Media’s New Year’s Eve celebration. It’s not only a town-wide dance party with lively, funky music; we also get to experience the thrill of the ball drop right here in town.”

Celebrate the Local Way with Fig® Bloggers

andrea quarracino, Media Music Notes

WHERE DO YOU BUY YOUR ORNAMENTS?

“My favorite place to buy ornaments is Quincy’s; I also love to browse their amazing selection of hand-crafted advent calendars.” jennifer camp, Fig Fresh

“As the f irst Fair Trade Town in the country, we have many stores downtown that offer hand-crafted, ethically and fairly traded gifts. When you buy one of these gifts, you are not only giving to the person who receives it; you are supporting an entire community. You are truly living the holiday spirit.” mariana lamaison sears, America’s First Fair Trade Town

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE SPOT TO GET WARM IN MEDIA WITH A NICE HOT BEVERAGE?

“I have to confess that I usually prefer a nice cold beverage, regardless of the weather, like a growler to go from Pinocchio's Beer Garden or Iron Hill Brewery!”

“An absolute staple during the holidays is a visit to Linvilla Orchards to cut your own Christmas tree. The fresh, crisp smell of cutting into a f ir; the work; and the sweat really start the season off for me.”

brooke penders, Media Beer Ladies

zach hammaker, The Dirt

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE MEDIA HOLIDAY MEMORY?

“My mom would always buy Bevan’s party mints for Christmas. I remember falling in love with them not only because they were so delicious but also because they were so beautifully decorated.” allison messick, The Sweet Life

“Nothing sets the mood for the holiday like bundling up and walking through Rose Tree Park to take in the light display.” monica schramm, Style Trends

peace. love. local.

we love local.

And during the holiday season, local gets even better. Hot brews, warm scarves, State Street shopping strolls. That feeling of home that comes from a very special mix of authentic people, places, and history. Sprinkled throughout the pages of this issue you'll find photos and memories of Media from years past, starting with the Christmas tree on the cover, circa 1950s. Media also offers the comfort of knowing that when you—and your pocketbook—stay home this holiday you support not only your local shopowners, you touch the world. We've discovered that what makes Media so good year-round makes it an even greater place to be for the holidays. As America's First Fair Trade Town, there's no better place to shop locally and think globally. To make a difference at home while making a difference in the lives of those abroad. To reaffirm who we are and what we believe in. Put your mittens & gloves together—let's applaud another year of buying, sustaining, and loving local. The Fig® Team

AFTER CELEBRATING THEIR GRAND OPENING AT 23 SOUTH JACKSON STREET IN LATE OCTOBER, VISO’S AUTHENTIC ITALIAN DESSERTS
IS SETTLING INTO ITS SCRUMPTIOUS NEW LOCATION.

“I’ve always wanted to have a business in Media. I told myself I’d have a store here someday. I love the community, the businesses, and the hometown feel,” says co-owner Donna Viso. “We want our business to complement the ones around it.”

For the lucky residents of Media, this new dessert shop tucked among bustling boutiques means easy access to made-from-scratch cannoli and cookies (not to mention assorted pastries and specialty cakes) whenever the mood strikes. And, given Viso’s irresistible and tempting menu, that mood is likely to strike again—and again—and again.

Donna and her co-owner brother, Rob, are fourth-generation members of a long baking legacy: “Our great-grandfather came from Enna, Sicily, in the early 1920s and opened up a shop in South Philly. In 1974, our father began his career using a lot of the same recipes!” Viso’s honors its nearly 100-year-old legacy through a commitment
to making everything from scratch, using only the finest ingredients. For the owners of this family-run business, keeping their greatgrandfather’s and father’s dreams alive in this modern, upbeat location is a thrilling opportunity. r

AIM AT YOUR SUBJECT, HOLD STEADY,

fully plunge your finger down, and — *CLICK* — a picture is captured. A moment in time forever frozen as a digital memory. Be it from the impressive 8 megapixel sensor in an iPhone 5 or that rickety point-and-shoot camera you’ve always had hanging around, the ability to document the everyday is becoming easier as technology forges forward. But what about capturing the timeless? An image carefully composed with the subtle dynamics brought out by various light sources. A relaxing environment staged to draw out the best in you. Meagan Ebersole of ME Photo & Design is one individual who has turned a passion for design and an eye for composition into an investment of equipment, space, and heart. Meagan has transformed a quaint space on South Orange Street into the perfect place for her to capture art through her lens, and you’re the subject. As a self-taught photographer, Meagan had to push herself extra hard to carve her name into the industry. Leaving a corporate job a few years ago, she applied her digital media arts degree from Moore College of Art & Design and began sharpening her teeth in the photography world as a second shooter for weddings. With an eye for aesthetics and a driving work ethic, it wasn’t long before she owned and operated her own wedding photography business. Hustling extra hours and working for sometimes nothing just to gain experience paid off as people started to take notice of the impressive pictures she constantly churns out. Now owning her own portrait studio in Media, Meagan continues to flourish with her classic lifestyle portraits of families, children, and pets. But with growth comes a need for help, and luckily Meagan has Bryn, her Studio Manager and Associate Photographer. “There is just so much value with Bryn,” she boasts. “She is the reason everything is able to run as well as it does.” With a talent for capturing images that are timeless, Meagan is developing memories that beg to be framed and displayed forever.

fresh faith

M ed i a P res b y t eri a n C h u rc h The members of Media Presbyterian Church are deeply involved in the larger community. Working on home repairs for those who “need something to start going right in their life,” cooking meals for the hungry, sewing clothes for children, and even helping build a pediatric hospital in Ghana, Africa—these acts of service are all a part of how this church lives out its mission:

REV. WILLIAM L. BORROR Senior Pastor REV. NIKKI PERRINE PASSANTE Associate Pastor

“Committed to serving the Lord, to loving our neighbors.” As Senior Pastor Bill Borror explains, the heart of the gospel is outward focused, and community service is a way that God works through his people. “It is Christ taking our meager, often flawed, attempts to follow him and transforming them into his powerful ‘yes’ to the human race.” Inside the church walls, this congregation serves its members as well, providing adult education classes, young adult ministry, youth groups, and children’s programs. Something is happening almost every night of the week, and there are opportunities for everyone to get involved, at all stages of life. This vibrant and loving church, which held its very first service in 1850 on the second floor over John C. Beatty's Dry Goods and Grocery Store, moved to its current location at 30 East Baltimore Avenue in 1855. With its mission of service and long history in the heart of Media, this is a church that knows and loves its community and is ready and willing to invest in its people. Media Presbyterian Church meets every Sunday morning, with worship times at 8:15, 9:30, and 11:00. The nursery is available for infants and toddlers on Sunday mornings during the 9:30 and 11:00 services.

A TOUCH OF SASS

Bold, bright, and eclectic—from the decor down to the dresses, Sassy Girl consignment shop is a beautiful representation of its owner’s personality. Coming to life only two months ago, Sassy Girl and owner Kimberly Shields are satisfying women’s cravings for unique and trendy fashion. The boutique delivers everything at a price that gives even the most budget-conscious woman no excuse for not being on top of every style for the season. The flexibility of both fashion and cost comes from the beauty of operating a consignment shop that has a penchant for the best. Choosing high-fashion brands like Betsey Johnson, BCBG, and Coach as well as the casual professional chic looks of Ann Taylor and White House Black Market, Kimberly finds the best of what people bring in and fills her racks with beautiful garments for all occasions.

Situated in a quaint space on the west end of State Street, the doors of Sassy Girl open up into a world of its own. Bright pink and green walls are accented by glossy white nooks sprinkled by the revolving light of a disco ball mounted overhead. Racks of cocktail dresses and denim are highlighted by tables packed with unique handmade offerings from local artists and designers, a beautiful juxtaposition of both proven and emerging styles. But Kimberly’s passions don’t end at injecting a little style into your wardrobe; she’s currently working to develop the Sassy Girl Foundation. At its core the foundation is an ambitious attempt to provide local young girls facing adversity with funds to pursue higher education. Kimberly has a love for the town of Media, a knack for style, and a drive to help others. This consignment shop, aptly named to reflect its owner’s personality, is quickly adding to the unique landscape of Downtown Media.

“We made a living, but more than that, we made friends.” — Bill Gross

Please provide a one or two sentence description of the photo seen above.

authentic

BILL & LORRAINE GROSS BILL GROSS Original owner of B. Gross Fine Menswear, with his wife Lorraine.

BILL GROSS WAS PRACTICALLY “BORN MEDIA.” Coming to this town when he was just 10 months old, Bill grew up learning the family trade at his father’s tailor and dry cleaning business. After serving his country and sacrificing a leg as a young man in World War II, Bill returned home and got right back to work. With a passion for excellence, he opened B. Gross Menswear in 1947, making it one of the longest-standing retail establishments in town. While men’s fashion has changed over time, one thing that has never changed at B. Gross Menswear is a commitment to quality. Throughout the years, customers not only recognized and appreciated the store’s level of service and attention to detail but also formed genuine friendships with owners Bill and his wife Lorraine. In addition to their work of running the family business—with Bill at the helm of the menswear store and Lorraine managing the tailor and dry cleaners around the corner—this loving couple raised three children together, all of whom live locally. r

30 r

After a lifetime of serving Media as a highly involved citizen, Bill was honored with Media’s first Community Service Award in 2011. A natural choice for this award, Bill was a member of the Rose Tree Media School Board for 17 years; he also served in the Rotary Club, helped establish Media’s first newspaper, and raised money for countless charities in the community. And though the business was passed in 2003 to former employee and friend Bruce Middleman, the legacy of Bill Gross continues to this day. Quality remains a top priority at B. Gross Menswear, even as the store evolves to meet today’s trends. Best known for its wide selection of menswear, ranging from business casual to formal wear, the store has recently expanded to include Per Lei, an upscale women’s apparel boutique. The Grosses recently celebrated 65 years of marriage. Here’s to Bill and Lorraine for setting a great example, in so many ways. When you see them out on a Friday night, be sure to stop them and thank them for their investment in our community.
