“MEET ME AT THE CLOCK.”
IT’S MEDIA’S TIME
If people in downtown Media want a face-to-face, this is a likely preface. Freestanding and green, the striking timepiece is officially a “reproduction” of its predecessor, the one that was toppled in a mishap — and only then revealed to have been made by Paul Revere. This is not to say that Media’s sumptuous history is in any way secreted. It beckons us through the wide plate glass windows of heirloom storefronts downtown; from its exquisitely preserved architecture; from its trolley tracks that crisscross State Street. Even so, new snippets from the past can be discovered by accident.
But the future is always decided by intention. Just like when the good people of Media decided to come together and take something else really good — their town — and make it even better. Not a reproduction, but a reinvention. A revolutionary one, even. Paul Revere would be proud.

in America, proud that the town, like the clock, is green. Together, the community has traded up to open organic restaurants and offer global products, to be a culture thriving on its respect for other cultures, and for the earth. They’re proud that like their clock, they’re freestanding — that they stand up for freedom in copious forms. Artistic. Aesthetic. Intellectual. Epicurean. Individual. Collective. They’re proud that the shops and restaurants; galleries and exhibits; festivals, concerts, and strolls that have erupted from these beliefs just keep getting hotter and hotter. And Fig® is proud to walk with them on this very striking street escape as we together advance with both deliberateness and design — right on time — to help create, sustain and showcase all that’s distinctive about Media. Because Media’s future is no longer in the arbitrary hands of a clock. It’s in the hands of an inspired and dedicated community. One that absolutely never sits on its hands. And because of that, your friends here at Fig® would like to be the first to shake them.
Fig® is a communications package offering both voice and vision for great small cities. Our carefully cultivated audience appreciates authenticity and distinction. A symbol of unity and prosperity, the subtleties of figs and their importance in historic cultures make ‘Fig’ a fitting name to showcase a distinctive small city lifestyle. Sophisticated and not too sweet, Fig® celebrates the understated elements and beauty that weave themselves into thriving cities. Like a mirror, Fig® reflects the soul of a community. Fig® creates a destination through imagery and language that gives both locals and visitors alike a picture of community. An unabashedly positive resource, Fig® cultivates conversation about the core attributes and joys of life in a small city. We believe in the power of a unified destination. We are proud and honored to bring Fig® to Media, Pennsylvania. Enjoy.

BECKY LEE Media Artist A PERMANENT SCAR OVER ARTIST BECKY LEE’S RIGHT EYE IS A REMINDER THAT THERE’S JUST NO SUBSTITUTE FOR A STURDY LADDER. But when she was five, and
downright determined to hang her little paintings, the bureau’s edge was all she had. Today, Media’s 2nd Saturday Coordinator fuses this same pluck with her talent and business savvy to leave a different kind of indelible mark: a really “smurfy” one. Becky’s favorite colors are blue and orange. And complementary. This means “they make each other look more like themselves,” the painter explains. Her new store, Blueberry Bog — part vintage shop, part gallery — is doing just this for area artists who can’t afford their own retail space. As a self-titled “organized artist,” Becky has helped spur an evolution in the downtown business community. Spare storefronts and walls no more: “Now, it’s all one big gallery!”
figmediapa.com
Like the decorative resurrection of 80’s floppy discs, and other rehabbed items in her store, it’s another brand of upcycling, one that has Becky Lee exhibiting her trademark smile when she thinks about what’s in store for Media. “I would love for us to be voted one of the best towns to live. I think we’re on our way.” Happily, the way is on a very sturdy — all locally handmade — ladder.

THE BEST OF MEDIA The heart & soul of a city on the verge
MEDIA MEANS SOMETHING DIFFERENT to just about everyone who lives here — not to mention the visitors who come to indulge in its expanding attractions. There is one neighborly consensus, though: This is precisely why they love it. Like the offerings of its shops, boutiques, restaurants, galleries and other cultural venues, there’s a little bit for everyone. And in a place where “everyone” can be artsy or homey, gritty or classy, vintage, crunchy, republican, democrat, upscale or upcycled (there’s even a celebrity whom we can’t mention), this is pretty exciting. Just the word itself, “media,” has different meanings. But each one, in its own meaningful way, defines a life that’s evolving in one very eclectic community.
their signs around to open, tossing the “for rent” signs out for good. People like this don’t just steep hundreds of teas. They go to India to study them first, and then feature tea leaf readers to enhance their sippers’ experience yet more. When the tags on their housewares and gift items read “one-of-a-kind,” it doesn’t mean “kind of.” Even a painter who refuses to use black devotes a wide column to it in her store. On the chalkboard paint, every 2nd Saturday, she writes the names of the new artists whose works she hangs on her walls — side by side with her own — in her innovative guerilla gallery.
Media has never been a timid place. Nor a quiet one. It knows a little bit about “mass communication.” It’s hard to walk down the street and not be greeted as a friend, even when a stranger. It’s just as hard to lounge in one of its tastily undiluted coffee shops and not let the newspaper droop, listening to people on both sides of the counter engage each other. And not always in small talk, either. Now — loudly and clearly — Media’s business owners and residents are starting to speak as a cohesive community. They’ve decided to join forces. To give voices to artists and musicians and all kinds of culture-makers in a big way. To make sure that downtown is abuzz so that not even a whisper goes unheard. To be advocates for prosperity and progress and promise.
And of course, “media” refers to any form used by an artist, composer, or writer. In Media, art can be made with wide swaths of saturated impasto pigments, or with Broadway shows. Other times, it is made by the simple strummings of a singersongwriter; with slow sync flash photography; with whole foods, organic foods, and ethnic foods; with local and global handmade objects; with crafts and children’s stories. With proprietors coming together and being open-minded enough to close down the streets for family-friendly festivals; for blues and jazz strolls; and for nights for truly taking it all in, like Dining Under the Stars. So whether it’s casual al fresco or on the stage of a restored beaux art theatre, the essence of Media always shines through.
And these “pr” words are not just PR, because people here know that what “media” means, also, is a means of doing something. Sure, folks do a lot of talking, like vital planning at the Media Arts Council, for example. But they’re walking the walk, too, right up and down State Street, flipping
But the most comprehensive and auspicious? “Media” is a substance in which something lives. And this is undefinable. Or, at least, it means something different to everyone — which for Media, is probably a very good thing.
“MEDIA HAS THE LUXURIES OF A GREAT CITY — AUTHENTICALLY WRAPPED IN SMALL TOWN CHARM.”

“Most of my originals are painted plein aire (outdoors). My art tells a story behind each piece. I use pastels, which is my favorite medium, as well as oils depending on my mood. 65 YEARS OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
When we hear “Victorian,” we might think corsets and cravats. We also envision those ornate houses with their sharply pitched roofs, quirky gables and wide front porches. A few such houses still exist in Media, a conscientious community ever mindful of its proud history. And much as the Victorian Era was a retro welcome mat for modern times, Media balances respect for its past with a vigorous open-door policy for its future. It’s fitting, then, that it was the conversion of these older homes into something new — something better for the people of Media — that gave birth to the Media Real Estate Company. President and CEO Bill Strine opens the company’s philosophical door with one inclusive sweep of his arm. “What’s best for the community at this moment?” Equally caring and practical, its answer has modulated over time — but never the question. Bill Strine’s father, who began the company over 65 years ago, first engaged the axiom in 1945 after noting that the Victorians were far too expensive to maintain. Why not buy one, fix it up, and turn the three floors into apartments that people can afford? He was “pleasantly surprised” by the success. Media Real Estate’s Vice President, Jeffry Cadorette, explains that today “people want something newer, brighter, bigger, more luxurious.” Their response? The “Madison Suites,” a high-end apartment complex. “There was a need,” Jeffry says simply. “We fulfilled the need.” Consistency and change. At first blush, they seem incompatible, like the asymmetry of those Victorians. The roofs, the gables, the porches, the facades; they’re like night and day. In a way, so is Media itself. As Delaware’s county seat, its population is 30,000 by day, 7,000 by night — after government workers have commuted home. Nonetheless, Media is still “everybody’s hometown.” Yes, it’s a truism, but that’s because it’s true. “No matter what the mix is, it’s a quaint feel, even if it’s not your hometown,” stresses Jeffry. Originally a summering spot for wealthy Philadelphians, Media was “where the city
1 East State Street
411 Manchester Avenue
ended and the country began.” Bill and Jeffry see Media as perched on the edge of change. Yet, a single timeless principle will always drive Media Real Estate: unparalleled customer service. “In the end, that’s the only thing that matters,” says Bill. And though we all appreciate the Victorians’ fancy facades, Media Real Estate doesn’t need one. They are a community-friendly company invested in Media, continuously located and continuously in business here; a true part of the community, never on the periphery. They give a lot back, too. Picking up the thread of his father’s practice of making older properties better, in 1994 Bill and his family restored the landmark Media Theatre to its original 1926 beaux arts splendor and produced Broadway shows. The Strine family years ago conveyed ownership of the Media Theatre to the Borough, and the Theatre now runs its own productions and programs. A Trader Joe’s moved to town, then an Iron Hill, and soon the sometimes empty storefronts on State Street were eliminated. Media is a community in which Media Real Estate is “very happily active.” They have four members on the Rotary Club of Media (three past presidents). They support City Team Ministries, the Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades, the Rocky Run YMCA and Tyler Arboretum, among other non-profits and organizations. They funded the Strine Learning Center at the Media Youth Center, the Strine Library and Academic Building at the Williamson School (where Bill serves on the Board) and significant parts of the Strategic Master Plan at Tyler Arboretum (where Jeffry is president of the Board of Trustees). They also funded the soon-to-be Family Fun Pool at Rocky Run Y (where both Bill and Jeffry have served on the Board). Media Real Estate contributes “time, talent and treasures to the community,” Jeffry says, an evaluation that Strine is quick to stress is “not an obligation, but a choice.” And if Bill and Jeffry continue to have their choice, they will always pursue “any development that would be an improvement to the current landscape of Media.” So as long as those old, stately Victorians stand, they will be a constant reminder of what Media Real Estate’s service stands for, too:
