Ready. Set. Learn. There's something in the air in Media—a passion for exploration, a thirst for knowledge, a hunger for thinking beyond the box. Cookie cutter educations have gone stale as a fresh batch of educational models are brought to the table. Let’s start with the very youngest of minds. Media’s preschools are meeting our kids exactly where they are. Educating the young pushes beyond the purely academic—and impressionable minds learn more than their abc's. Children develop intellectually, yes, but also physically, socially and emotionally. Hands-on learning experiences turn abstract concepts into tactile truths. Small, more intimate learning environments instill the values and morals that are so critical in today's world. Students connect with their teachers and each other. The key is in unlocking each student's potential. And in Media, there are many choices that enrich, inspire and nurture all ages. So, put on your thinking caps and explore the possibilities for learning in our great town. We hope you are inspired by the things you discover. EXECUTIVE EDITOR

Deb-are we getting new images?

fig. b Foundation: the basis or groundwork of anything. Buildings have foundations to support the plans of architecture. Terroir is the foundation to any beautiful glass of wine. And we as humans find our foundations within what has shaped us: our relationships, our religions, the unmarked twists and turns life so often hands us. Not all foundations are strong or even reliable, but when they are, look out world. Think Taj Mahal. Its construction began in 1642, and not only is it still standing, it’s still outstanding. The perfect balance of soil, location and weather provides a winemaker with the terroir to bring us the perfect glass. As humans, when we think about our foundations we’re often brought back to the beginning, the experiences we had, the things we did when we were young. Foundations are the essential piece. We all have to start somewhere—and if there is one thing we’ve realized in putting together this issue to share with you, it’s that Media is full of opportunities for strong foundation building. For instilling into the next generation a new skill set that pushes them while still encouraging them to keep hold of the ideals their parents' parents valued. Right here in Media we have preschools that have been around for years that are leaders in their field, teaching our smallest of friends to solve problems through play and encouraging them to find joy in learning through discovery. Elementary and middle schools are rocking the boat in the field of education and are holding students accountable for their learning and their actions. Gone are the days of a passive classroom environment: students are communicating, students are engaged and students are building foundations. Outside of school, our town has community groups in libraries and theatres, all of which encourage kids and adults alike to step out of the box. Teens' voices are being heard through writing clubs at local libraries. Actors are learning on stage how to heed the words of a director and still hold to their own unique style and stage presence. Learning, education and foundation building are taking place in and out of the classroom, and we couldn’t be prouder of a community that seems to whisper from its very pores, “We care about tomorrow.”

k n i h t g i b Media has a variety of options to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners who are living in a time when status quo simply won’t be enough. We’re here to tell you that this next generation of kids is in good hands. When life hands them twists and turns they’ll have the tools to approach it . . . the tools to build from the things they learned when they were young.

I am committed to be peace, for me, for my family, for my friends, for my community, for all people, everywhere. For the earth, for all living creatures. To teach peace. To plant its seeds. To grow love, around me first, and to send it out into the world. —FROM THE "BE PEACE" DAILY PLEDGE

authentic: Denise Yocco “DO YOU BELIEVE IN A WORLD WITHOUT WAR?” The words stumbled out of my mouth, with a touch of trepidation and a ton of honesty. Denise had been sitting across from me on a small stool situated in the back of Seven Stones, her boutique. She had been breezing though questions for the past 30 minutes, but this particular sentence seemed to ignite something. She paused for a second . . . glanced down and adjusted her posture, as if to buy a moment in thought . . . and then, a smirk stretched across her face, her shoulders eased up, she looked me in the eye and with confidence and hope she simply answered, “Yes.” Running her boutique on the west end of State Street for the last 10 years, Denise Yocco has rooted the ideals of peace into her core. With the heart of a hippie, she formed a shop that promotes and

pg 12

expands people’s perceptions of what is possible when we put focus back into our hearts and our neighborhoods. She’s forged an environment that draws in like-minded people, along with the minds of the curious. But her monthly drum circles and her connection with the community hardly scratch the surface of what she believes she’s capable of creating. After completing an educational program with the Shift Network labeled “Be Peace,” her ideals of peace and how the world can adopt it began to shift. She was able to shift her internal stance on peace from “What can I do?” to “How can we all?” The more she opened her life up to this idea, the more she saw and became part of a rapidly growing grassroots movement of people worldwide that feel the same way. > Read more about Denise at Figmediapa.com

PASSION IS PURELY A CULMINATION OF SPIRIT AND VIGOR APPLIED TO OUR DAILY LIVES—OR CAN IT REACH FURTHER THAN THAT? CAN IT BECOME THE DRIVING FORCE THAT PROPELS YOU OUT OF EXPECTATION AND INTO EXCELLENCE? Chef Loic Barnieu has already proven he can translate his French roots successfully with his first restaurant in Media, La Belle Epoque; his ability to be diverse and creative also shines in his second restaurant, Picasso. When Barnieu saw an opening in a town he’s heavily believed and invested in for the last few years, he didn’t just wish for someone to bring it to Media; he took the initiative and brought it himself . . . in a fashion only he could. And so the concept of Diego’s Cantina & Tequila Bar was born. Located at 214 West State Street, it is shaping up to be the perfect culmination of what Barnieu was born to do, while applying it to everything Media needs. It’s a unique offering of Mexican fare done in a natural and sophisticated fashion. Combine that with a bar with over 40 tequilas and a kitchen with a wood-burning stove, and we can’t help but salivate for the late March opening. A penchant for fresh and quality ingredients, a broad and accommodating price point and an eye for aesthetics and atmosphere, Diego’s is poised to display everything that makes Barnieu such an asset to this town.

NINA J. DAVIDSON: Inspiring local youths through creative writing and reflection

pg 22

In the year Nina J. Davidson spent as the art blogger for Fig® Media, she was immersed into the vast community of artists in Media but noted the lack of writers and writers' groups. She was active in her church and she heard from a few of the girls in the youth group that they’d be participating in National Novel Writing Month, just like she had the year before. With the support of Media-Upper Providence (MUP) Free Library Youth Services Librarian Brittany Eastman, an idea to host a write-in at the library eventually evolved into the Teen Writers Group.

With the support of MUP Library Program Director Jim Swiggett, Nina will be doing outreach work at the Delaware County Juvenile Detention Center. Though the background of the teens in the juvenile detention center is drastically different, Nina’s goals for the outreach program are the same. “With the kids in the juvenile detention center, I want to tailor the illustrative examples so that they speak to their experiences.” On her list of illustrative examples is an excerpt from Walter Dean Myers' award-winning young adult novel, Monster.

The Teen Writers Group gives teens ages 12-18 a safe, supportive atmosphere to come and share their poetry, short stories and other original works. Nina’s goal is to facilitate a teen-centered group where teens can come and share their works free of judgment and criticism in order to encourage them to write creatively. Though the structure of the program may change based on the teens participating, the group will adhere to group-written rules, incorporate a variety of print and visual aids to show illustrative examples of literature and have in-group writing exercises.

The book is written from the perspective of a young man who committed a crime and is using writing to cope with his trial. “By using Monster, I hope to show them that [the protagonist] made a mistake, the consequences of which may land him in jail for the rest of his life. I want to start a dialogue about it in the hopes that this reading can open the door to insights about their own situations.” By using readings like this, Nina hopes to be able to show teens at the facility that they can make better decisions moving forward.

CATCH THE TEEN WRITERS GROUP ON THE THIRD THURSDAY OF EVERY MONTH AT THE MUP LIBRARY FROM 6-8PM.
