hometown goodness Tasting the diversity of the Media food scene is as easy as strolling from one end of town to the other.

F

rom farm-to-table to international cuisine and hometown favorites, Media’s restaurateurs represent the creativity inherent in our flavorful community. It’s the season to celebrate local, sustainable eating with gardens in bloom and an abundance of farm fresh food at the Media Farmers Market. Pick up colorful produce, fresh flowers, and handcrafted foods to enliven your taste buds and your table. Warm evenings and golden sunsets set the stage for Dining Under the Stars, a Media tradition that turns State Street into a town-wide dinner party. It’s a great excuse to catch up with friends and neighbors over a decadent meal under summer skies while live music spills out onto the sidewalks. It’s also the season to enjoy the harvest with a share in your local CSA. Area growers such as Hillside Farm and Red Hill Farm offer herbs and vegetables straight out of the garden, giving farm to table new meaning. Just out of town, check out Pete’s Produce and Wolff’s Apple House for garden fare on the go. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the return of the annual Food and Craft festival this fall. For the 33rd year, the Food and Craft fest will bring thousands to State Street for a delicious showcase of local restaurants, artisans, and crafters.

food for thought

School is where children live for most of the day, for most of the week, for most of the year. Every day at MPFS, experts in early childhood, elementary and adolescent education craft meaningful learning experiences that engage students through inquiry, creativity, collaboration and reflection, and shape the habits of mind, character and conscience that will serve them throughout life. Now is the time to apply for Fall 2014. Limited openings remain for Fall 2013.

Visit to see for yourself the difference meaningful learning makes at Media-Providence Friends School.

giving back MARIE GOODWIN OF TIMEBANK MEDIA Media is home to a wealth of talent: artists and craftspeople, foodies and farmers, woodworkers and designers, musicians and healers. For Marie Goodwin, the inspiration to start TimeBank Media began with an appreciation for the varied skills and talents in her community. “Time banking makes people’s gifts visible to everyone else—we can see how to be of service to each other.” TimeBank Media’s members have the opportunity to put their skills to work and see a return on their offerings. Services are traded hour for hour with time “banked” for skills rendered. A volunteer-led initiative of Transition Town Media, the Time Bank supports all things local, encouraging collaboration and enriching the community with events, lectures, and workshops. “Media holds the right “Timebanking element of cohesion, with makes people’s an active and involved business district,” says gift visible to Marie. Support for the local economy is everyone else emphasized with we can see how both Time Bank and Transition Town Media’s to be of service work; part of their aim to each other.” is to bring dollars back into the community by encouraging a “buy local” ethos. To this end, TimeBank Media is actively involved in the local food movement, enabling members to bank time at farms and CSAs, supporting a local food infrastructure. “For every percentage you buy locally, you bring dollars back to Media and Delaware County—it’s a self-supporting cycle,” says Marie. “We all have needs and we all have gifts—this is how to get things done.” Find out more about Timebanking at timebankmedia.org

For Amy and George Loving, the decision to house two diverse businesses in one location came down to one important element: family.

George & Amy Loving

B

aby George, now almost two, was all the incentive his parents needed to think outside the box. Today 5 East State Street is home to both Starry Eyed Optical, a boutique frame store, and Fitness at 5 East, an intimate training studio. While the front of the store showcases high-end eyewear, the back of the store opens into a gym with state-of-the-art equipment and a separate entrance for privacy from foot traffic.

An optician with over 15 years of experience, Amy opened Starry Eyed Optical at 5 East State Street just over five years ago. For eight years she’d worked in a Rittenhouse Square boutique, and when that business closed, Amy wanted to continue offering the same level of customer service and care. “Glasses really have a certain connotation that other accessories do not,” said Amy. “It becomes an art to fit a face to a frame.” At Starry Eyed Optical, Amy provides her customers with “fine and artsy eyewear” and a custom look for each individual.

ew • l

George first started working as a personal trainer in Los Angeles 13 years ago, where he was living and performing as a professional musician. After years of working in corporate and gym environments, George decided to become his own boss and launch Fitness at 5 East. Much as Amy helps her clientele achieve a desired look, George works with people who want to bulk up, trim down, recover greater mobility, or train for sports. With a client base that ranges from 23-73, George specializes in individual exercise and nutritional guidance, fitness assessment, weight loss, strength and flexibility. To find a look that fits your needs, visit Amy and George on Facebook. 5 East State Street | 484.443.8396 | starryeyedoptical.com 25

“Media has been good to us, we want to continue to give back.” Tim, Athena and Ted Volikas

authentic

TED VOLIKAS OF PINOCCHIO’S RESTAURANT Ted Volikas still remembers the day his father walked in with a Pinocchio’s pizza box. Little did he know, that pie would set the course of a family legacy now nearly 50 years strong: good food and community in the heart of Media. Established in its Baltimore Avenue location in 1955, Pinocchio’s was the first pizza shop in the area. In 1965, Ted’s parents purchased the restaurant from its founders and served their flavorful fare. From traditional Italian-style pizza to hoagies, stromboli, burgers and entrees, the Pinocchio’s menu reflects a commitment to quality and “something for everyone.” As a teen, Ted Volikas worked alongside his father at the restaurant. After high school Ted stepped into Pinocchio’s full time, taking over when his dad

retired. Now his children, Tim and Athena, help run the business. Ted credits Pinocchio’s success to his staff, who are “like family” —many have worked there for over a decade. “We’ve had a lot of fun here,” said Ted. “We have a great customer base.” Pinocchio’s has evolved over time to include their popular Beer Garden To Go, which offers a selection of over 850 craft bottles. The Beer Garden To Go has been so well received that Di Bruno Bros. partnered with Pinocchio’s to host beer and cheese events, and Iron Hill Brewery collaborated with Pinocchio’s to create their Real Boy double IPA. Pinocchio’s was also one of the founding participants of Media’s Food Festival, and the Volikas family is committed to supporting local events and charitable organizations. “Media has been good to us,” said Ted. “We want to continue to give back.”

THIS IS THE

What works in Media TIME TOisGET everyone working together. INVOLVED WITH The time is now.THE MEDIA BUSINESS AUTHORITY

It’s summertime, and Media is flourishing. From musical showcases like the State Street Blues Stroll to 2nd Saturdays, the Food Festival, and the Annual Car Show, our town hums with activity. Events such as Dining Under the Stars on Wednesday nights invite restaurant-goers to experience the flavor of Media against a backdrop of local businesses: artisan boutiques and galleries, salons and clothing stores, sporting and home goods, and so much more. With a robust variety of merchants and culturally diverse restaurants in a walkable environment, Media is truly the place to be. The Media Business Authority helps to increase Media business patronage through presenting these and other activities, wherein the town becomes a stage for the MBA’s year-long calendar of events.

Part of what makes Media such a gem is its hometown feel, and the value its residents and merchants place on their community. The Media Business Authority is committed to growing and supporting this connectivity, inviting retailers to reach out to one another and cultivate a broader understanding of their neighbors’ expertise. “What’s good for Media is good for every business,” says Bryan Messick, Chair of the Media Business Authority. As Media has grown and adapted over the years, so too have its business owners and residents. The role of the Media Business Authority has long been to bring in new faces and drive commerce, to enhance the overall image of the borough, and to provide businesses with opportunities to promote themselves and interact with potential customers. Now is the time to continue that momentum, to uphold a strong community that “works together and benefits.” Bryan was on the Promotions Committee of the MBA for five years, and was on the board for the last year before becoming Chair. He is also President of the Media Rotary Club, is on the Board of Directors of the Media Fellowship House, and works at Media’s Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union. Bryan resides with his wife, Kelly, and two-year-old daughter, Reagan, in Middletown.
