A SLICE OF LIFE IF WE ONLY BOASTED ABOUT THE SHEER VOLUME OF RESTAURANTS MEDIA HAS, it still wouldn’t make your weekday lunches, weekend dinners and grocery grabbing any easier. With over 30 establishments offering experiences ranging from grab and go, sit with the family or “Let’s have another round,” a rapidly growing and evolving downtown is coming to life before us. You’re carried through the town by aromas of Thai spices and baked pies; music literally spills out into the street every Wednesday evening, when State Street closes and a community dines together underneath a starry summer sky. So within these beautiful pages, we aim to add some clarity to your dining conundrums by showing off what’s new and highlighting what’s always been great. We hope to inspire you to dash out and rediscover all that’s charming about Media.

VEGETARIAN OPTIONS LOCAL INGREDIENTS SERVING BREAKFAST FAMILY FRIENDLY
Starting with Wednesday evenings in the summertime, you’ll discover a concept that’s credited to the cafés of Paris or the piazzas of Italy. Media is adopting the al fresco dining concept and applying it in an exciting way. Meander up a side street toward State, and the sounds of chatter and music dance around. It’s an exciting moment once you turn the corner and find the sound is not coming from bumper to bumper traffic, but from elbow to elbow diners enjoying the food and the tunes. Be it by your family’s side, or with a loved one at your hand, the town glistens from the candles on the tables up to the stars in the sky. You can find comfort and relaxation
at one establishment or do as we often do and play some restaurant roulette. Maybe a nibble of antipasto from the regal patio of Spasso, then a tapas or two from Picasso and finally the sweet guilty glow of O’Malley’s Ice Cream Pub and a hot fudge sundae. Because you’re a trooper, we know you can shake off Wednesday’s food hangover and prepare for Thursday’s Farmers Market. Back to State Street you’ll go, tote in hand and a mission of “What’s for dinner” on your mind. This isn’t just some standard flea market you’re headed to — no, it’s an honest effort, put forth by passionate volunteers and farmers dedicated to pushing sustainable farming awareness and healthy eating initiatives. Here you’ll find a direct link from the farm to your table, at a price that’s easy on your wallet but substantial enough to provide producers with safe working conditions and valuable income. All this wonderment and we haven’t even hit the weekend yet. If you happened to pick up this issue on an empty stomach, we can only hope you’re within striking distance of one of the many delicious eateries shown within the pages of this issue of Fig®.
enjoy! The Fig® Team

GIVING BACK [GREENER PARTNERS]
SITUATED ON 40 ACRES at the southwest end of Elwyn’s campus is Hillside Farm, operated by Greener Partners. Established as a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) initiative in 2009, this nonprofit farm — and its steadfast pursuit of sustainable farming, education and crop-sharing programs — supplies the residents of Delaware County with much, much more than produce.
kids love to eat to where they come from. The program informs and inspires kids to select healthier choices that benefit not only themselves, but also the land around them.
Just as we pulled up, so did a bus filled with enthusiastic second graders from The Walden School. The kids were there to get a crash course in farming — they found out just how good it could be, literally, as they chugged away at farm fresh smoothies.
The farm’s mission is to offer a direct and economical way for communities to interact with farmers for the greater good of everyone. CSA members pick up seasonal produce on a weekly basis and can get involved further on volunteer days. Summer camps teach kids how to grow and prepare food that will nourish them and provide opportunities to explore the farm through hikes and science-based projects. The Lost Arts Workshops educate and inspire participants to become more self-sufficient.
Education Director Meg MacCurtin has a knack for handson education and a passion for a farm-to-fork lifestyle. Greener Partners’ Seed to Snack® program takes learning out of the classroom and connects the dots from the foods
As we left that evening, another bus full of ambitious young farmers was heading toward the barn. It’s amazing to see how such a small, yet passionate, operation can nurture individuals and a community.

“THE FINEST GIFT A MAN CAN GIVE TO HIS AGE AND TIME IS THE GIFT OF A CONSTRUCTIVE AND CREATIVE LIFE.” —The Art of Living, by Wilfred A. Peterson Towne House restaurant and banquet facility has artfully inscribed this quote on an old wooden beam in the basement. It’s one of many quotes scattered throughout the massive 1,400 capacity banquet, bar and restaurant wonderland. Built by Babe D’Ignazio in 1951, it’s become a collection of moments, mementoes and photos that represent the life of Babe, while inviting the patron to become a part of the wonder and make it their own. Today the establishment is run by Babe’s daughter Lisa and her husband John. They manage and coordinate an operation that includes 125 employees, while maintaining an environment and attitude established by Babe from the restaurant’s beginning.

Somewhere beside a self-serve popcorn cart, beneath the silky glow of a Tiffany chandelier, we cozied into a booth and enjoyed drinks shaken and stirred by a bartender who’s been there for 38 years. Before the cherry was consumed from our Manhattan, owners John and Lisa joined us for a round of conversation. Their story is part of the fun; Lisa grew up around the place and came in with her dad daily, and so it was a given she’d go on to work there someday. As for John, he was a fresh-faced journalist out of college with no previous restaurant experience, but John fell in love with Lisa, and so it became a given he’d end up there, too, right beside her. It was in the cards for these two to own and operate everything together, but what wasn’t a given is the science to make a place like this succeed... > Read more about John at figmediapa.com
