FIG ® MEDIA

Media. You could just eat this place from the ground up. Fat strawberries and mushrooms seduced from the earth. Bold curries and coffees percolating in the air. You can Zagat or bag it. It’s raw: the sushi, leafy chard and even the milk. It’s well-done: global, local, everywhere a fresh dish. So much fairly traded, yet so good it’s sinful. White linen on a table for two. Red gingham on a farmers’ market table for everyone. Get each day your daily bread: freshly baked. Sound appetizing? Sate your imagination with experience. It’s the best course. And far, far tastier. So, eat up. Eat down. Eat all around. Media has great taste. Sample every one of the 40+ restaurants in this foodie destination. Start by visiting some of our favorite palate-pleasing eateries as seen on the following pages of this issue of Fig®. fig ® is solely supported by our advertisers. Support your local Fig® businesses & join us in creating a thriving local community.

Hand-thrown mug by Bob Deane. Available at Earth & State.

fair trade champion NOT DEFINING A PERSON BY HIS ONE TOWERING ACCOMPLISHMENT CAN BE A CHALLENGE. Hal Taussig, for example, is Mr. Fair Trade — to his family, friends, business associates and even Martha Stewart. He did, of course, launch the movement in Media, making it the first Fair Trade town in America. And yes, as he likes to say modestly, “Media was ready.” He even has

12

his own blend of Fair Trade coffee: Hal’s Blend. Might this be, though, because he’s such the real deal? Smiling broadly on each label, Hal offers “cheers” to Equal Exchange for putting “full flavor and integrity in every cup.” If he could be labeled, the same adjectives would stick to Hal with great ease. But a label is close to a brand. A brand is close to consumerism. And consumerism, insists Hal, “doesn’t make people happy.” (So what does? KAZUYUKI MITSUI Azie Kazuyuki trained under famed Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, but he credits his mother as his first teacher. Kaz is serving Parmesan breaded Tazmanian trout with a honey miso & pesto sauce. See us on page 05

LOIC BARNIEU La Belle Epoque & Picasso “My family taught me how to cook. It’s in my genes.” Fitting, because the moment you enter La Belle Epoque & Picasso you are warmly greeted by friends & familiar faces—one great big family.

TIM VOLIKAS Pinocchio’s Restaurant It’s simple at Pinocchio’s. Dough. Sauce. Cheese. These tried-and-true ingredients keep Media coming back for more— by the slice, that is. “Stop by and see us tossing a pie made right in front of your eyes!”

CHRIS ALLEN Lotus Farm to Table Lotus isn’t simply a restaurant—it’s a destination and a lifestyle. “We’re committed to pure dishes that inspire good taste in Media.”

See us on page 25

DEE JONES Sweet Potato Cafe Satisfy your sweet tooth. “We make our food with love. Pies, cookies, cakes and more: they all taste like home. My favorite thing at Sweet Potato Cafe is our peach pie—it’s to die for.” Got your fill of sweets? Sweet Potato Cafe also has a wide selection of soups, sandwiches and vegetarian options. See us on page 34

GREG QUINTILIANO & ALAN REH Dos Gringos Mexican Kitchen “Stop by and try our signature dish: Morita-rubbed carne asada with chipotle mashed potatoes and tomatillos.”

CHRISTINA BAIR Sligo Sligo serves up Irish comfort food with style. Be sure to try the Prince Edward Island Mussels— served with hand cut chips and a grilled baguette. And don’t forget the Guiness! See us on page 27

NATALIE GRAHAM Seven Stones Cafe The devotion of Seven Stones Cafe’s staff is making people feel good with an emphasis on fresh ingredients in a comfortable setting. “My good taste is inspired by local ingredients—and, of course, my family. My mom especially. We’re Italian, food is our life!” See us on page 10

JOE KIRKWOOD Towne House A self-taught cook for 8 years, Joe offers a dish perfect for summer—a 20 oz. Porterhouse served with a baked stuffed tomato and a fresh lettuce wedge.

NAVARAT RATANAKANAKA La Na Thai Taking influences from fine French and Thai cuisine, La Na Thai offers an unexpected mix of Eastern and Western flavors. Try the Tutti Fruity Duck—roasted semi-boneless duck served with raspberry sauce and flavored with a touch of spices and chambord liquer. See us on page 31

CHRISTOPHER W. BLASI Fellini ZAIL S. SHERGILL Shere-E-Punjab Come taste the results of a thorough education at Shere-E-Punjab. Pushpinder Singh, owner of ShereE-Punjab, credits his father, Zail, a chef of 25 years, for his knowledge of authentic Indian cuisine. His chicken tikka masala is a palate-pleasing favorite. Broiled in the tandoor and cooked in a rich creamy sauce of tomatoes, onions and herbs, the taste— and aroma—is hard to resist.

Chris loves the fresh tastes of summer, like Jersey tomatoes and Italian herbs. Sample these flavors in Fellini’s Surprise Salad.

LAZAROS KARASAVAS Generations Restaurant At Generations, there’s something for everyone. From an intimate dining experience to a large seating area for events— this gem in Media is sure to please. Lazaros is serving the Fresh Tuna Stack: medallions of sesamecrusted ahi tuna served with homemade wasabi aioli. Simply delicious. See us on page 20

ED TIETJEN Stephen’s on State Tietjen studied under the best chefs in Philadelphia and settled in the vibrant community of Media. Try his Pepper Seared Tuna, served with a seaweed salad and a zesty wasabi crema. See us on page 18

MICHAEL HACKETT House When asked what makes House a unique place to dine, owner Michael Hackett’s enthusiastic—and accurate—answer is “everything!” The perfect summer lunch—the BLT with carmelized onion, mayo and watermelon gazpacho.

W

hat makes a signature dish? Media’s restaurants are happy to offer you their tried-and-true recipe. Locally grown values, fresh-picked creativity and a pinch of global flavor all make for a very special dish that nourishes both the body and spirit. Food is a connector. When we eat, we share time and conversation with the people we love. We consume—directly—the intimate handwork of

“food is a connector” our chefs. We support local farmers, growers and market owners. And we reconnect with ourselves. In an age of constant stimulation, mealtime offers a break from chaos—a moment of reflection. Technology may change, but the comforting allure of a fresh-baked slice of pie remains constant. A brisk walk through Media’ s downtown reveals a diverse tapestry of eateries and inviting aromas—a treat for the senses. Stop in for a cup at Seven Stones Cafe and you may find yourself sipping on fair-trade Colombian coffee while your ears soak up the sounds of live music. Sample the sushi at Margaret Kuo’s and you might also marvel at your plate’s museum-worthy composition and color palette. So what is Media’s signature dish? The answer is simple—it’s all about the mix.

Rebecca Michelle Lee has studied art in Italy and has degrees in art and business. As an independent artist, Rebecca presents workshops as well as creating fine art. Formerly the 2nd Saturday Coordinator for the Media Arts Council, locals know her better by her nickname, “Becky Lee.” She is now currently the Resident Artist of Blueberry Bog vintage & handmade.

“For any of my work to succeed I cannot create on my terms. When I observe my own surrender I feel the joy of the Creator, like I am sharing secrets with God. The more I can remove of myself in the process the more sincere the work will be.”

“I have played along the banks of Crum & Ridley Creek since 1969. As a professional potter I relish the opportunity to visit my old stomping grounds to gather clay. I process the clay that I harvest to create functional pottery that wants to be held & caressed by loving hands.” Deane’s work is available at a variety of galleries and in many domestic and international collections.

“I am neither a traditionalist nor am I a purist. I am not held to conventions or rules; I prefer to let the paper, ink, brushes and paint take me on a journey that is a mystery with no preconceived beginning or ending.”

Myra Reichel started learning weaving in 1970 at the University of the Arts. She is listed in Who’s Who in American Art, and her work has been exhibited in museums, galleries and fine craft markets. Her tapestries are currently on view at the Reiki Healing Center, 20 South Olive Street, Suite 305 by appointment.

“Drawing is always in the mix as the music festivals of summer feed my sketchbook images.” Drew will be appearing at art events all through the summer months— experience live art demonstrations and collaboration in clay with Bob Deane all summer long during the Mysterious Days of Clay.

TYLER ARBORETUM: a sanctuary in nature Cell Phones. iPods. Emails. Texts. YEARNING TO DISCONNECT? Tyler Arboretum is the antidote—650 magnificent acres of blossoms, birds, butterflies and towering trees in the heart of Delaware County. Here, the voices in your ear are the winds rustling through canopies of truly healthy forest, including over 26 of the original champion trees planted by Minshall and Jacob Painter in 1830 over a century after the land was sold to their ancestors by William Penn. Four of the trees, like the breathtaking Cedar of Lebanon, are officially the largest of their type in Pennsylvania. Or, perhaps what you’ll hear is your own gasp as you try to take in crabapples, magnolias, cherries and lilacs that exist nowhere else, or the over 13 acres of award-winning rhododendrons, all in bloom at once. Or ... maybe, it’ll sound something like this: “Come on, MOM!” a pig-tailed tot in a t-shirt emblazoned with “Little Girls, Big Dreams” urges. “This one’s Tinker Bell!” Racing wide-eyed through the “Pixie’s House,” one stop on the Magical Habitats Exhibit running through October 30, the young girl is one of 7,000 school children who come to Tyler each year to learn about plants, environmental responsibility—and of course gnomes, fairies and their enchanted friends.

MEDIA REAL ESTATE:

Supporting Media With 65 Years Of Community Engagement

1 East State Street

Tyler may be serene, but it’s far from passive. Tyler boasts over 100 programs, exhibits and special events annually—for both children and adults—from spring flowers to fall pumpkin days. Patrons can participate in weekly guided bird and wildflower walks; historic rambles; and woodland, wetland and meadow hikes. Or, visitors can feel free to navigate independently the over 20 miles of marked trails. Getting disconnected has never sounded so exquisite. Like any board of directors, the one at Tyler sets policies for the staff to implement—but with one big difference, stresses third-year Board of Trustees president Jeffry Cadorette: “We as board members are stewards and privileged to be so.” Inspired by the significant, philanthropic contributions from BiIl Strine and his wife Judy—herself a previous board member for nine years—as well as by his own very personal dedication to nature, Jeffry believes strongly that “the torch has been passed to us.” This means having a very “hands-on” board to help stimulate an understanding of our living world. As such, the board has “ramped up” education in recent years to make Tyler more of a destination for children and families and has implemented successful fundraising, like the Arboretum’s signature fundraiser begun by Bill and Jeffry nine years ago: Tyler at Twilight, an under-the-stars silent and live auction. Both of these efforts—and the board’s myriad others— are transforming Tyler from a “hidden jewel” into a regional destination. And not just with dollars.
