west chester for then, now, & always

my first night in west chester, I cried myself to sleep. The image of

my parents unloading crates from the trunk of the car, my life compartmentalized into toiletries—bedding and nonperishables. The old me tucked under my mother’s arm, held by the watchful gaze of my father. I watched from Goshen Hall, my family driving quietly back to my childhood, while I stood viewing what would be my future. When people ask me why I came to West Chester, I say “I came to West Chester University and I never left.” And I never did. As I sat in my dorm room making some of the best friends of my life, I was falling in love with West Chester, one experience at a time. I was connecting to the diversity and creativity of the downtown. While the town was beginning to shed its skin little by little, so was I. West Chester and I found our voice together and we were growing through the pain and the accolades. During the holiday season, I am drawn to a quote by Charles Dickens from A Christmas Carol: “I will live in the past, the present, and the future. The spirits of all three shall strive within me.” West Chester has a historically rich past, being the county seat since 1786. Presently the town thrives, from a vibrant college community, to the arts, to retail shops, and to the eateries. Now, I look to the destined future of the town with the same eyes that looked out the window of Goshen Hall many years ago. But today, instead of homesickness, you will hear my laugh bellowing through the streets before you will see my face. (The same laugh that embarrasses my three children and can be a bit much for my colleagues at 8 am.) Charles Dickens writes, “There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor.”

what’s the recipe for a great restaurant that stands the test of time? Start off with a strong core— a menu filled with the classics. Add a strong team dedicated to building relationships. Keep it consistent. Keep it updated. Stay innovative. Stay motivated. Put it all together and you’ve got The Classic Diner, 19 years old, still going strong and still growing. When Tom Farrell opened The Classic Diner in Malvern, he had a goal to revolutionize traditional breakfast and lunch foods. With Krissy Flynn by his side, the two established their restaurant as a local staple in the Philly food scene. Now along with Tom’s brother Nick and his wife Linda Farrell (owners of the regional favorite Sovana Bistro in Kennett Square), the group will expand their brand and bring The Classic Diner to Gay Street. “We’re a solid team,” Krissy says.

6 16 east gay streeet 610.725.0515 theclassicdinerpa.com

“Everyone brings something different to the table. Nick is a strong leader with a great business sense. Tom has an eye for design and presentation. Linda loves to work with her staff and is a great motivator. And I love connecting with our guests.” West Chester locals have a lot to look forward to with this team in town. Every item on the menu is homemade—the soups, potato chips, french fries, pies, baked goods, and the homemade sticky buns ( just to name a few). You won’t even find a freezer at The Classic Diner. The bacon is mouthwatering. The eggs benedict are renowned. The portions are large; you won’t go home hungry. And if all that isn’t enough, Krissy and Linda will be on hand to provide the best customer service around. Need we say more?

authentic:

dr. clifford e. debaptiste

if there’s a story to be told in West Chester, it’s that of Dr. Clifford E. DeBaptiste. With more than 60 years of service, Dr. DeBaptiste has impacted Chester County in immeasurable and innumerable ways. To truly understand the magnitude of his character and dedication to the community, we must start telling his story from the very beginning—in 1954 when Dr. DeBaptiste first moved to West Chester. Along with his young bride Inez Manning DeBaptiste and daughter Lillian L. DeBaptiste, Dr. DeBaptiste had energy to spare and wanted to devote it to opening a business in West Chester. In the face of opposition locally, the family opened the DeBaptiste Funeral Home in 1954—and its doors have been open ever since, expanding throughout the years. This successful familyrun business would be the ground on which Dr. DeBaptiste was able to donate his time and services to the borough of West Chester. In 1968, Dr. DeBaptiste was appointed to the Trustee Board of West Chester University.

His ardent support of education placed him at the center of a monumental movement for the university. During the school’s epic expansion in which a 250-acre area was added to the university, he was there. During the tearing down of Old Main and construction of New Main, he was there. In fact, between 1968 and 1972, along with the board, Dr. DeBaptiste championed the school’s expansion—22 new buildings to be constructed in just four years. A once small school comprised of 1,800 students and faculty, today has a population of almost 16,000. A true activist, Dr. DeBaptiste was a catalyst for the university’s growth, which as a result, served as a catalyst for the growth of West Chester. The next step for West Chester’s biggest champion would be mayor. With mentor and friend Charlie Swope by his side, Dr. DeBaptiste was elected mayor in 1993. Under his leadership, the borough saw growth and success. But the most memorable event for Dr. DeBaptiste was his organization of

West Chester’s 200th birthday in 1999. As Chairman of the Bicentennial Committee, West Chester celebrated all year long. The festive spirit started in January with a champagne toast and a prayer. The following months would host seven parades, West Chester’s first fireworks, and the first time the Budweiser Clydesdales would trek through town. In that memorable event, the 2nd Division Marine Band of the United States led the way as a jubilant parade followed behind, with the Clydesdales at the tail. As the mayor’s two terms came to an end and he returned to his business, Dr. DeBaptiste continued to actively support Chester County in any way possible. “I’ve had 60 years of service in West Chester and it’s easy to say that I’ve had 60 positive years,” he says. If you have the chance to meet Dr. DeBaptiste, you know that this positive spirit can be felt in the air and is easily absorbed by all those around him.

THE BEST RADIATION ONCOLOGY IN THE REGION BEGINS IN WEST CHESTER The scene looks futuristic, like something born in the imagination of a science-fiction writer. A cancer patient lies still on a radiation treatment couch, as what looks like space-age machinery starts circling around them to deliver precise radiation treatment with a remarkable level of control and synchronization. Called True-Beam™, this advanced technology represents a quantum leap forward in the speed, accuracy and safety of radiation therapy.

Andre Konski, MD, MBA, MA, FACR joined Penn Medicine in January as Chester County Hospital’s Medical Director of Radiation Oncology. Having practiced for many years at NCI comprehensive cancer centers, Dr. Konski brings tremendous clinical expertise to the hospital’s Cancer Program. “TrueBeam is much more than cutting-edge technology; it is the leading edge of radiation therapy and goes beyond what is considered stateof-the-art today.”

As part of Penn Medicine Chester County Hospital patients with cancer have access to a personalized treatment plan that considers every radiation option available. Many therapies, including Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT); Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT); Conformal Radiation Therapy (CRT); Sterotactic body radiotherapy; and Computed Tomography Simulation (CT SIM) can be found locally here in West Chester.

Dr. Konski works alongside fellow Penn physician and Radiation Oncologist Ann Marie Siegal, MD, who says the increased precision of the TrueBeam has significantly fine-tuned an often-challenging treatment delivery process. “Many tumors are located in places that are affected by the body’s slightest movement. With the TrueBeam, radiation fields can be tailored tightly, directly targeting the cancer or area at risk.”

YOUR LIFE IS WORTH PENN MEDICINE.

Radiation Oncology is a key component of Penn Medicine’s Comprehensive cancer program at Chester County Hospital. frank herron of barnaby’s growing up with six siblings, you can trace

Frank Herron’s skills in sharing all the way back to his childhood. Now as an adult and local business owner, Frank spends his time sharing with the people of West Chester. Whether it’s sharing a beer at Barnaby’s of America, donating to non-profit organizations, or starting the Bartender’s Ball in West Chester, Frank’s selfless personality has marked him as a local leader. After graduating college, Frank was bar hopping the restaurant industry until 2003 when he returned to West Chester and joined the Barnaby’s team. Here he was able to fit into a culture that encouraged all his charitable endeavors by donating their advertising budget to youth sports, and local police and fire departments. Frank says, “Our culture comes down from our lead partner Bill Daily. We’ve seen the bigger picture and we know what’s good for the community is good for everyone. We want to work with local businesses and organizations, supporting them in any way they need.” Last August, in the midst of all his day-to-day donating, Frank stumbled upon an opportunity that he couldn’t let slip by. The Budweiser Clydesdales were going to be in Philadelphia, and Frank had heard there was a chance they could visit West Chester.

Within two days, he proposed the idea to the Borough Council and in just 24 short days, the Clydesdales would make their way through the borough. Frank and Barnaby’s offered to pay it forward, covering all costs until they could raise the total funds. When all was said and done, they had raised enough to bring the Cylesdales and donate $2,400 to the Wounded Warrior Project and David’s Drive (a Coatesville charity for Chester County veterans). When the Clydesdales arrived on August 29, Frank remembers, “It was spectacular, the turnout and Meet people who inspire energy of West Chester was amazing. at the core of the The StanAb Development Company is a passionate devotion to Chester County community. The StanAb Development Company was founded in 1994 by lifelong Chester County residents and entrepreneurs, Victor Abdala, Jr. and Tony Stancato. Their mission was unique and focused: repurpose and revitalize under-utilized real estate in Chester County to create a positive economic impact on the community. They have never wavered from this strategy. StanAb has been a catalyst in the transformation of West Chester. In 1998, they purchased the former Woolworth building on the corner of Gay and High Streets and brought in Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant, now a much-loved anchor of the borough of West Chester. StanAb has completed more than 23 residential and commercial real estate projects in Chester County, with their latest project being The Chestnut Street Lofts, West Chester’s first lifetsyle-inspired apartment community.

fresh face | holiday 2014 | figwestchester.com now taking clients!

Meet new local businesses that add to the texture of our thriving downtown in every issue.

fresh face:

with 13 years of experience as a hair stylist, Stephanie Cleck

relocated to Washington D.C. with plans to retire her scissors and devote time to raising her young family. But soon she began to notice a growing need among her friends— the desire to balance their styling needs with their busy schedules. Many women relish the salon experience, but find it hard to carve time out of their busy schedules to pamper themselves. And with three young ones, Stephanie understands the meaning of “busy.” Starting off with just one busy mother, Stephanie brought her talents and offered at-home salon styling while her friend’s children were napping. Her friend told a friend, who told a friend, and soon referrals started pouring in. Stephanie’s reputation

as an experienced stylist combined with this unique approach to “salon services in the comfort of your own home” flourished and within two years, Stephanie had 160 clients in the D.C. area who faithfully rescheduled every six weeks for a fresh color and cut. This past February, Stephanie relocated again to West Chester and formed CON∙CI∙HAIR∙GE to bring her talents to our area. Now the women of West Chester can have their hair styled from the comfort and convenience of their own home. Stephanie tells us, “My service is for all types of women: stay-at-home Moms, professional working women, or any woman who can’t find time for the salon. social mission

At Fig®, we believe in the power of creative thinking to transform a community. Each year, we choose an innovative nonprofit whose good works contribute immensely to our thriving local community. Please consider supporting this worthy cause. Join us in celebrating our 2014 Social Mission Partner: Safe Harbor. Safe Harbor’s mission reaches beyond just feeding the homeless and providing shelter. They aim to help rebuild lives and life skills, reestablish self-esteem, and help people overcome the issues that prevent them from leading independent, productive lives.

Senator Andy Dinniman, Joan Pladek, Shirley Deist and CEO Glenn Fricke

A special holiday message from Safe Harbor: congratulations to our 2014 safe harbor andrew dinniman humanitarian award winners!

the susan g. komen 3 day walk brought

teachers and friends Coleen Herbst and Jodi Wooten together for the famous 60-mile walk raising money for breast cancer. In their efforts to raise additional money to donate to the cause, Coleen and Jodi developed Camp for a Cure. This science-based summer camp, teaching preschool students through handson activities, helped Coleen and Jodi raise more than $44,000 over the past six years to benefit breast cancer research.

Jodi Wooten and Coleen Herbst in front of the Rocky Balboa sculpture in Philadelphia. They originally developed Camp for a Cure to raise money for breast cancer research.

Moved by the scientist spirit apparent in their students, Coleen and Jodi decided to turn their summer camp into a full curriculum. They started out using a space at Saint Agnes School for a few hours a week, where they stayed for four years, working with local West Chester students. Now they’ve moved into their own space and continue to run the same program that little scientists have grown to love. At Think Like a Scientist! LLC., children age four to six attend a weekly program with rotating themes.

From the pulmonary and circulatory system, to a creature feature where a different animal is met each week, to outer space, students can attend classes for two full years without repeating the same lesson. Each day begins with a listening and learning time, where Coleen and Jodi review the day’s lesson. Next comes experimenting in the lab—a new experiment each week. Then comes exploration time, when students can move freely from one interactive station to the next. Each station is set up with toys and activities that directly relate to the science concept of the day, with always at least two related art projects. Through Think Like a Scientist! LLC., students are able to explore science in an interactive and hands-on way. “We’re helping them create memorable, tactile connections that help them take home what they learn,” says Coleen. Jodi adds, “There are moments when you can see that they truly understand what we’re teaching them. Those ‘ah-ha’ moments are the most special to us.”
