Open your Heart this Holiday i have always loved the holidays. My mother, whose childhood

Christmases were more traumatic than joyful, worked overtime to bring magic into our home. My brother and I would lay head to head under the Christmas tree and look up into the web of lights and talk endlessly about what we wanted from Santa. The house smelled like beeswax ornaments and pine and cinnamon sticks simmering on the stove. We would read The Gift of the Magi before bedtime and when we woke, our wishes were piled high under the tree. But, in the end, I only remember one or two special gifts. What stayed with me were the traditions. I hope my three boys will remember the Christmas Parade, all bundled with a cup of warm cocoa, and the lighting of the glittery tree at the courthouse. I hope they will remember caroling through downtown West Chester with neighbors, looking at the lights and greens adorning shops and homes. And yes, I hope they will remember a special gift or two—but I also hope they remember the Christmas the only gift we could afford to extend to friends and loved ones was homemade cookies. Our last ingredient was always a ceremonial sprinkle of love. This is the season of giving. I feel giddy when I find the perfect gift while strolling and shopping through my town. But I no longer see the season the same way I did as a child—so carefully crafted by my mother’s love. I want my boys to remember the holidays are a time for giving to those in need who may have public or secret struggles. I want them to remember The Gift of the Magi.

Mark Yoder, President of the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce

A U T H E N T I C : M a r k Yo d e r the greater west chester chamber of commerce is the

leading organization for local businesses and entrepreneurs, focusing on helping members reach new customers, resolve business challenges, and become an integral part of the community. Mark Yoder, Chamber President, is committed to the Borough’s success. “We work hard to help business owners become successful,” he says. Whether that’s offering networking opportunities, providing resources and guidance for business management, or planning huge events that

draw thousands, The Chamber is constantly working on behalf of their 700 members. When he’s not judging the Chili Cook-Off, doing work on the Board of the BID, or coaching his son’s soccer games, Mark and his team at The Chamber (Dave Fairman, Bethany Kopp, and Libby Parks) are working on planning the next big event. Part of his role is to promote and package West Chester as a place where fun events are always happening—like the December 4th Old-Fashioned Christmas Parade which is expected to attract 35,000 people. “Sixty percent of every dollar stays in the community when it’s spent in a

small business,” Mark explains. The ThinkShopBuy…Local campaign encourages the community to purchase goods and services from local businesses. The free app makes shopping easier than ever! “The strategy of what we’re doing as a Chamber is to be the best we can be, to make West Chester the best it can be—and to share the success,” he says. “It’s a passion for us. We want to see West Chester be great. We want to see our businesses succeed.” Learn more about Mark and The Chamber at greaterwestchester.com.

F R E S H FAC E : Old Soul Décor what is beauty, after all? To someone like Krystal Reinhard, it’s simple: It’s an admiration for what’s natural, what has history, and what has been made beautiful in its time.

Old Soul Décor is West Chester’s newest treasure trove. The store is an affordable eclectic blend of vintage and antique furniture, jewelry, home décor, original artwork, and everything from primitive antiques to midcentury modern. It feels like the prize room of a world-traveler who has discovered and displayed impressive curiosities and collections with care. At an early age, Krystal knew she would be in an artistic field. “Both my parents

are from Germany. My sisters and I are first generation. For us, there was a big emphasis on saving your money and doing things yourself,” she says. One grandfather was a carpenter; the other, a painter. Her father was always making, fascinated by the process. “It’s been in my blood from the beginning,” she says with assurance— her desire for intrigue evident with a single step inside the store. It’s more than just a retail store; it’s also her fully functioning studio. After undergraduate and graduate school for art and design, Krystal transitioned to the world of interior design. Clients and customers can visit and see her in motion: hair in a ponytail, apron on, paint or polish

on her hands—engaging with thoughtful conversation about the pieces she sells. What is it? Where was it made? Where do the pieces come from? “We find them anywhere and everywhere,” she says. Krystal and her boyfriend and partner in exploration, Josh Unruh, have more than 20 years of experience in vintage and antiques, especially period furniture. “It’s the thrill of the hunt. Josh and I say it’s like Christmas every day.” Indeed everything here has been made beautiful in its time. Fuel your own sense of wanderlust this holiday season. What is the Fig Social Mission all about? At Fig, we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. We believe in the mission of The Charles A. Melton Arts and Education Center—our 2015 Social Mission Partner. Please consider giving to them with your

dollars and your time this holiday season.

E X PA N D S The New Directions program was established in 2010 and was originally funded by a grant from the Moody’s Foundation. New Directions offers free elementary academic coaching and homework assistance, as well as, recreational activities and field trips. The program will begin its sixth year serving West Chester Area School District students. The $25,000 grant will help

expand the program from elementary school to middle school program, as well as a summer program. This will allow the Melton Center to have students from Kindergarten to eighth grade in structured programs throughout the year.

Several of the middle school students started in the program in 2010 and we are very happy to be able to serve them during their middle experience.

Get involved today! Visit meltoncenter.org to learn how you can make a difference in the local community.

a meaningful

season

by j e n a n d e r s o n , f i g b lo g g e r

From arts and culture to health and fitness, delicious recipes to family fun, Fig West Chester bloggers are covering a little bit of everything and always keeping our community in the loop. Read the latest at figwestchester.com. Interested in sharing your voice? Email social@figwestchester.com.

As the Holiday Season arrives, the crunch to 'get it all done' can leave families feeling overwhelmed. Amidst the shopping, the decorating, the list-making, and the checking-it-twice, it can be easy to lose the family fun. Luckily for area families, the Chester County area has so many opportunities for nearby family fun that is festive and full of potential to become part of a new family holiday tradition. Holiday traditions, for our family, are what it is all about. When we take our seats at the West Chester Christmas parade or visit the train displays, it feels familiar and feels like a chance to remember what it’s all about for our family. It is these events and activities that we look forward to each year.

Longwood Gardens is a family-friendly spot all year round, but at Christmas there is an added element of magic! Grab a hot chocolate and stroll the beautiful displays inside and out. Strollers are available to rent for young guests.
