CREATIVE

COLLABORATION finding inspiration in west chester is an easy thing to do—all you have to do

is open your eyes. The borough is a hub for creativity, and at its core is West Chester University. Educators nurture student growth and encourage inspiration, helping them to hone their talents and produce great art. Whether the medium is fine art or the performing arts, their productions are a gift to the borough— one that we celebrate and appreciate every day. The historic buildings and public spaces throughout town are works of art in themselves. As they provide the backdrop for us to find our own inspiration, local artists adorn gallery walls with their creations and some even take their talents to the streets by creating murals. As you’re reading this, volunteers are working together to restore art in West Chester’s Marshall Square Park for us all to enjoy. And the Uptown! Entertainment Alliance is renovating the historic West Chester Armory to give the borough its own theatre. In the pages of this issue, we’ve gathered the best of art in West Chester—from ballet to theatre, oil paintings to clay pottery and beyond. Flip the pages, find your inspiration, and find out how you can be a part of the creative collaboration in West Chester. Meet the entire creative and talented team who make Fig® possible at figwestchester.com.

karen cavin OF THE 5 SENSES

When it comes to West Chester, there are few more authentic than Karen Cavin. After moving here more than 30 years ago, Karen immediately fell for the borough’s cultural character and she hasn’t looked back since. “I don’t even eat outside of West Chester. I haven’t been to the mall in years. Why would I? There’s everything here,” she laughs. To Karen, West Chester is a truly unique town with unmatched dining, entertainment, shopping, and—thanks to Karen—arts. You probably know Karen as the owner of The 5 Senses. In May of 2005, she opened the doors to her store after working for many

years as a graphic designer. “I really liked making things with my hands. I’m not a painter or drawer, but I really liked making pottery and jewelry. I noticed that the functional artists didn’t have as many outlets as painters do, so I opened my store as a gallery for craftspeople,” Karen says of her inspiration.

In her store she features mainly North American products that have a functional purpose. She showcases the work of more than 100 artists, at least 20 of them being from Pennsylvania. Karen also allows local artists to consign their art—a support that gives artists continued ownership of their work and a gallery to showcase it in. This support of the local arts

scene is integral to the creative culture of West Chester. Over the years, Karen has been a key player in the borough’s growth into an arts town. She explains her dedication to the local scene, “Arts and culture: we need art. Art is creativity. We need creativity in politics, government, and business. It’s one of the most important things you can teach and encourage.” It’s this creative spirit championed by local leaders like Karen that permeates West Chester; you can feel it in the air, and you can find it in The 5 Senses. the5senses.com

giving back | fall 2014 | figwestchester.com authentic. true. west chester. Pictured is the Fountain Restoration Committee of Marshall Square Park which has more than 75 members.

The park was founded in 1848 and is 7 years older than Central Park in New York City.

giving back:

the friends of marshall square park

What makes a good friend? A friend is supportive, trustworthy, caring, and devoted. A friend is someone who will support you when you’re down, and will lend you a hand to help you stand again. The Friends of Marshall Square Park are just that—good friends. Anne Walters, Gordon Woodrow, Jeff Beitel, and Jim Salvas, together form the Fountain Restoration Committee of the Friends of Marshall Square Park. The park’s history reaches back to 1878 when it was initially formed and the group aims to help it shine again by restoring and preserving its historic integrity. More than a century ago, a beautiful Victorian fountain stood as a prominent and much-loved feature of Marshall Square Park. Sadly, over

the course of many decades, the fountain was neglected and fell into disrepair. The basin where the fountain sat was eventually filled with soil and the beautiful cast iron Victorian fountain was discarded in a field. Many years after its removal, Gene Gagliardi and his late wife Joan, saved this fountain from complete destruction, respecting its legacy and documenting its original structure. Now the Friends of Marshall Square Park intend to resurrect the famous cast iron fountain, modeling a new landmark while staying true to the original structure. For now, the Friends of Marshall Square Park have cleaned out the overgrown basin and groomed a garden around it of annual and perennial flowers and shrubbery. Gordon Woodrow says, “Restoring this fountain gives West Chester an important

anchor for the eastern entrance to the borough and is a continued reminder of our history in volunteer, community-supported parks and recreation. In addition, it’s a fitting way to honor Joan Chandlee Gagliardi, who worked tirelessly to locate the fountain and have it donated, making life a little more beautiful for all citizens of West Chester.” West Chester owes a great deal of thanks to Joan, Gene, Anne, Gordon, Jeff, and Jim for their tireless work in preserving this piece of art at Marshall Square Park for all to enjoy. Please consider donating to The Friends of West Chester Parks and Recreation. Mail your check to P.O. Box 1894, West Chester, PA, 19380 and specify your donation is to be used for Fountain Restoration. The Capital Campaign for Restoration and Installation kicks off on Oct. 25.

CREATIVE WEST CHESTER IS A HUB FOR INNOVATIVE AND CREATIVE THINKERS

THINKERS

“We work and live in an environment created by architects such as Thomas U. Walter and T. Roney Williamson, where innovative artists like Horace Pippin interpreted daily life like never before and America's pre-eminent composer Samuel Barber learned his craft. It's part of the very soul of West Chester that nurtures the creative spirit.”

malcolm johnstone

with a thriving university at its core.

executive director of the west chester bid

Every day, small businesses open their doors and open their minds, moving from the conceptualized to the concrete; city organizations act as creative architects, promoting development in unprecedented ways; local leaders invest in the infrastructure of our borough, finding creative ways to stimulate economic growth; and the educators and students of West Chester University motivate us to think in new ways.

“I think West Chester is very colorful, in sight, sound and smell! I am inspired daily by the beauty of the historic architecture, the buzz of the streets on a Saturday night, the access to local, fresh foods and fabulous restaurants, and the energy of a college town. West Chester gives me a small town feel with big city goals.” lori zytkowicz owner/innkeeper, faunbrook b&b

We want to know what moves these creative thinkers to act. We asked them, “How does the West Chester inspire your creative process?” They answered… “Whenever you meander down our brick sidewalks, peak in our shops, or talk to our locals, you realize you’re a part of something special—a living, breathing community of like-minds working to improve not only themselves, but those around them. Our borough exudes a creative spirit that other locales simply can’t match, and all it takes is a step outside to realize our advantage.”

kymberly robinson

owner of stratus interactive

12 figwestchester.com

“Some of West Chester's most innovative and creative minds are members of The Rotary Club of West Chester. The weekly opportunity to interact with this great group of Rotarians keeps the creative juices flowing.” john schwab president of west chester rotary club “There is an esprit de corps in West Chester unlike anywhere else I have lived. It inspires enthusiasm and a strong desire to contribute creatively to the community. Many visitors—who come to this town to live, work, study, worship, or just relax—become members of a group that considers West Chester home.” richard may rkm advisors, uptown! alliance, west chester bid “The energy in West Chester is motivating and inspiring. The town is full of positive and creative people that inspire people to create, innovate, and lead. I love having West Chester as the home for our corporate office because I feel it is always moving forward while still honoring the history of the past. It has inspired me to become a better and more innovative entrepreneur.”

dave magrogan

the dave magrogan group

“There has been so much going on in the past 10 years in West Chester that it has been a challenge to find ways to incorporate all the new ideas that have created the great town we know today. But that is what has brought out the best in our involved citizens—many people working together to discover the best ideas and then make them happen. As an example, restaurants wanted to have outside dining in the summer but we didn't want to lose parking permanently. So, we came up with temporary dining platforms. I think we were the first town to do this!” holly brown west chester borough council president “I find running in downtown West Chester to be a great stress reliever. I usually bring my dog—a Great Dane named Cappy—with me and scope out the scenery, take in the life of the town. It’s inspiring to see all the great small boutique shops and restaurants continuing to pop up. Some of Iron Hill’s best ideas were spawned from these jaunts, like our Twilight Criterium bike race, which has turned into a community-wide party every summer.” kevin finn president, iron hill brewery & restaurant “I am inspired by the people who make up West Chester’s diverse communities: residents, businesses, students, faculty, artists, non-profits, neighbors, visitors. We have a tremendous capacity to create new ideas when we bring our diverse heads together!” carolyn t. comitta mayor of west chester “West Chester is one of the truly great towns in the commonwealth. It has gone through several cycles of prosperity over the years. It's a dynamic place that's always in a state of change. It's WC’s past that provides the inspiration and innovation for creating a better future.” eli kahn e. kahn development corp “The West Chester area has such a rich blend of history, education, arts, culture, and industry. You can have dinner in a Revolutionary War era inn, sitting next to some of the country’s brightest technological innovators and artists. It’s an inspiring, invigorating place to be. I also love that so many people here also really care about helping those in their community who are less fortunate.” jim scanlon superintendent of schools at west chester area school district

meet one of the fig® bloggers

For many, West Chester is a place of red brick store fronts, law offices and, of course, restaurants. Near its center is the imposing edifice of the Justice Center, which seems to project a rather staid image of the town.

artists of West Chester feel that they need to have anything but a neighborly approach to getting their art work “out there,” as they say. As artist James Lee Burk puts it, “it’s a scene without an art scene.”

That may be one reason why it’s easy to forget that the local art scene—centered in recent years on Gallery Walks and popular outdoor painting days—has long been an important draw to the borough.

Burk had his start exhibiting in local restaurants and now sells regularly out of his studio, a converted carriage house behind Halliday Florist. Others take part in the annual Chester County Studio Tour. chestercountystudiotour.com

At one point, in fact, those in the business of selling images—the town's gallery owners—came up with the motto “Small town, Big Art” to promote the idea that one didn’t need to go the big city to discover art. That isn’t to say that the numerous

Regardless of the approach, there is an built-in art market known as Brandywine Art Tradition. It’s an artistic identity some artists I know trace to Indian Hannah, who along with her dogs, Elmun and Putmoe, wandered from town to town, selling her

handmade brooms and woven baskets. I associate the tradition with the illustrator N.C. Wyeth who helped to found the Chester County Art Association and even designed its logo. Wyeth mentored the folk artist Horace Pippin, who in turn influenced a long line of artists, including such borough “Modernists” as Tom Bostelle and Harry Dunn. As I’ll try to explain in future blog entries, you never know what artists will do next in West Chester. To paraphrase Bostelle, who once placed koi fish in the Brandywine, they have grown with their surroundings. Catherine C. fresh face: mercato ristorante & bar After traveling by boat across the expansive Atlantic Ocean from the shores of Naples, Italy, the Mercato Ristorante’s brick oven finally found its home in West Chester. Now starting this fall, they’ll be serving you artisan pastas, small plates, and a crudo menu alongside brick-oven Neapolitan pizza. Mercato Ristorante’s brick oven isn’t the only thing straight from the shores of Italy, owner Alfredo Giannaccari grew up there. It was there that he discovered his passion for the culinary world. At 11 he learned to age meat and make homemade sausage during days spent at his father’s butcher shop. At 13 he learned how to make bread and mastered the art of homemade mozzarella while working in his uncle’s bakery. Since moving to America in 1996, he has been bringing Italian tradition to the table every day.

Alfredo and his wife, Barb, will now open their fourth restaurant in West Chester. The menu will be heavily influenced by Southern Italian Cuisine and will feature Alfredo’s authentic recipes that he perfected during years of hands-on experience. With an expansive selection of pasta and fish dishes, it does not go unnoticed that with each plate, there is a taste of his Italian roots. Mercato Ristorante will also boast a wine cellar for private parties to experience a more intimate setting, as well as covered patio dining with a beautiful view of Church and Market streets. Head to Mercato Ristorante for truly authentic cuisine. “Fresh” and “homemade” are two words you’ll regularly hear (and taste) from Barb and Alfredo. “Delicious” and “delectable” are just two of the words you’ll hear from those who have had the good fortune to taste their cuisine.

SAVe THE hIsTORY that saved America

You can help the Chester County Historical Society save evidence of a Chester County man’s principled stand against slavery and injustice. In 1855 Passmore Williamson was jailed for refusing to cooperate in recovering an enslaved woman after she gained freedom with his assistance. Last year, Williamson’s prison visitors’ book won the “People’s Choice Award” in the campaign to save Pennsylvania’s Top 10 Endangered Artifacts. The book is fragile and crumbling, but with your assistance we can preserve the signatures of Frederick Douglass and the hundreds of other abolitionists who visited Williamson in jail, as well as the letters of support that came from all over the world. Your gift will help save this treasure and allow us to share the book and Williamson’s story with future generations by creating online access to images of the book and information about his supporters. Make a gift online at ChesterCoHistorical.org or please contact David B. Reinfeld at 610.692.4800 x 267 or dreinfeld@chestercohistorical.org.

SOCIAL MISSION

At Fig® we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. We believe in the mission of Safe Harbor—our 2014 Social Mission Partner. Please consider giving to them with your dollars and your time.

one day and one person at a time. “Safe Harbor is a comforting concept when all you know is abuse and isolation. The kindness and the generosity that has been offered is mind-blowing. In short, I went from a skull-fractured, bleeding, bruised, heart-broken, beat up and homeless shell, to a sincerely happy, somewhat well-adjusted independent person. I would never wish homelessness on anyone but [I do wish] they could just experience the kindness I have known in, of all places, a homeless shelter.” – Dawn, October 2012 Almost 90% of the funds needed to run Safe Harbor’s shelter come from supporters in our community. So many local businesses, organizations and individuals provide services, goods, and money which allow us to continue our mission to serve the homeless men and women in Chester County. Thank you. Much of these funds come through our annual fundraising events. We hope you will consider supporting us and joining us at our 7th Annual Safe Harbor Golf Classic at Whitford Country Club on Monday September 22. Details can be found on our website or by calling 610.701.5680. Limited sponsorship opportunities are available. Golf is limited to 100; please sign up now.

LOVING LOCAL + COMMUNITY COOPERATION

invest in west chester, consider becoming a memberowner in the new west chester food cooperative.

“We want to revitalize and celebrate our connections with each other and with the earth which sustains us. These connections have become obscured by the modern industrial food system,” says Suzanne Adams, a founding member of the West Chester Food Co-op. The Swarthmore Co-op has been doing just that since 1937, and now the West Chester community has an opportunity to do the same.

Food cooperatives (co-ops for short) are community-owned businesses that support local food producers and the local economy, and strengthen community through cooperation, education, and care for others. Food co-op dollars stay in the community, flowing to local food producers, local employees of the co-op, and back to local member owners as patronage dividends. The West Chester Food Co-op will be open to all; shoppers will be able to understand where their food is coming from and have the confidence that comes from dealing with a principled, community-owned business that

measures success not merely in dollars but in community well being. The West Chester Food Co-op is part of a wave of food co-op activity in the Philadelphia region, where there are at least seven new food co-ops in various stages of development. Food co-ops are a force for change in the food system as they return control of the food supply to local communities. Cooperatives take loving local and community cooperation to new heights, and we can’t wait to see what the West Chester Food Co-op has in store. Find out more at facebook.com/WestChesterFoodCooperative

The Swarthmore Co–op is a community-owned food market located in the heart of the Swarthmore Borough. While we rely on our members’ support, the Co–op is open to all, members and shoppers. Popcorn Obsession

Zebra Caramel, Dill Pickle, Mac & Cheese, Caramel Cashew, Coconut, Chocolate Caramel Pecan. What amazing flavors can be packed into the crunch of a salty or sweet kernel of corn? We dare you to imagine a flavor that Popcorn Obsession hasn’t already tried… and they welcome the challenge! Owner Cindy Fox says, “We maintain a suggestion list and constantly consider menu additions through customer sampling.” With more than 70 flavors of gourmet popcorn ranging from savory Parmesan Garlic to sweet Heath Toffee Almond, the possibilities are nearly endless. Owners Cindy and Ben Fox set out on this journey after living in Denver where they discovered a delicious local popcorn shop. For 10 years they let the idea of creating their own store settle into their imagination until finally deciding to take the leap. Then Cindy and Ben learned from a gourmet popcorn expert in Dallas, where he demonstrated the art of flavoring popcorn while

providing the foundation for making their dream a reality. Feeling prepared and hungry for a challenge, the mother-son duo brought their popcorn obsession back to Chadds Ford. Since opening in January, Popcorn Obsession has become a favorite for both children and adults alike. Not only do they feature almost any popcorn flavor you could dream of, the front of the store is home to a candy shop stuffed wall to wall with goodies. “We carry nostalgic candies that remind adults of childhood, and also unique candies for kids. Not to mention, every Harry Potter™ candy you can think of—Butter Beer, Chocolate Frogs, Bertie Botts Every Flavour Jelly Beans.” Popcorn Obsession is bursting with fun and flavor for you to explore, give as gifts, or spice up that next wedding, party, or family gathering. LIFE LIVED FORWARD Willow Valleyrepurpose lancaster’s LIVING IN FULL COLOR Creativity has always been at the heart of Willow Valley Communities’ success. With the opening of The Clubhouse this month, Willow Valley breaks through convention to create something that once again helps reimagine the senior living lifestyle. Every amenity in the 30,000 square-foot building illustrates the spirit of “agelessness” that guides the philosophy of development at Willow Valley. The Clubhouse features a six-lane bowling alley, a vintage arcade and a Sports Center, where pickleball, volleyball, basketball, and badminton can be played. A golf simulator, an outdoor pool and spa, two Har-Tru™ tennis courts and a snack shop round out the downstairs amenities. Upstairs, The Local Table will offer a farm-fresh menu and a full-service bar, with an impressive array of wines selected by Willow Valley Communities’ own sommelier, Chris Trendler. The Clubhouse opens a new world of possibilities, as an intergenerational “hub” for those who live at Willow Valley and their families. “The Clubhouse expresses a feeling of vibrancy,” says John G. Swanson, President of Willow Valley Living. “And vibrancy is compelling—no matter what your age.” Willow Valley Communities— Life Lived Forward. Visit the Willow Valley Communities Welcome Center.
