welcome home WEST CHESTER
W
est Chester is fantastically festive during the holiday season.
With the return of the annual Old-Fashioned Christmas Parade and the musical Santa Stroll, and the anticipation of area shops and restaurants rolling out their holiday best, there’s no better place to enjoy the warmth and merriment of the season. In the pages of this issue you’ll find inspiration for one-of-a-kind holiday gifts as we celebrate the essence of what it means to live, shop, and love all things local. We also pay homage to a vintage-style homecoming, harkening back to a simpler time before cell phones and online shopping, with a photo spread including Mayor Carolyn Comitta in front of the historic courthouse with a 1938 Hudson Terraplane. In addition, we are delighted to feature some of the people and places that make West Chester such a unique and vibrant community all year long. As we look ahead to the start of a new year, we reflect on the changes that happened in 2013. The first block of Gay Street saw the most innovation with the addition of three new businesses. The ever-popular Roots Café expanded into the space at 133 East Gay Street, with Baco Juice and Taco Bar taking over its former space across from Iron Hill Brewery.
The fashionable Tish Boutique opened its doors at 138 Gay Street last spring, offering chic ladies’ apparel. And this fall, Balance Hair Salon opened just a few doors down, adding to the sophistication and style that has now come to define this first block. Further into town, Kooma reopened on 123 North Church Street, doubling its size and completely revamping its look. There are many reasons to look forward to 2014 as we plan to celebrate the cold-weather season with a new event in February, Winterfest. This brand-new family-oriented event will feature carriage rides, ice sculptures, and more. Check out figwestchester.com for updates. This holiday season also marks Fig® West Chester’s two-year anniversary. We look forward to bringing you the fresh, fashionable, and flavorful of West Chester in the years to come. Join us in buying local this holiday season and supporting the community we love. Happy holidays! the
holiday cheer SEE WHAT WEST CHESTER’S LEADERS ARE SAYING ABOUT CELEBRATING ( THE LOCAL WAY)!
“West Chester shines brightly during each season of the year, but during the holidays we sparkle! It is a season when we are reminded of our greatest gift—our people.” –C arolyn T. Comitta, Mayor
“For us, West Chester’s holiday season truly begins when our Little Lincolns step onto our historic Lincoln Building balcony and deliver the Gettysburg Address, moments before West Chester’s Old-Fashioned holiday parade begins. You can feel the anticipation in the crowd, dressed in Victorian garb and modern fashion, with joyful tunes from WCU’s marching band warming up near the Courthouse. The parade is coming! Holiday cheer is here!” – Karen A. Simmons, President/CEO, Chester County Community Foundation
“West Chester is such a beautiful town, and it just sparkles at Christmas. I love bumping into friends as my wife, Connie, and I walk around town. And it is so nice to walk into friendly stores such as Kaly or Sunset Hill Jewelers and have the owners know what would be a perfect gift for my family.” – Thomas McEvoy, President, Uptown Entertainment Alliance
Carolyn T. Comitta, Mayor
Car courtesy of Last Chance Garage in Unionville, PA
“West Chester’s Old-Fashioned Christmas Parade takes us back to a seemingly simpler time, and gives us an opportunity to appreciate even more the historic resources that make the borough such a great place to live and visit.” – A. Roy Smith, West Chester Business Improvement District
“I love that the people of West Chester are so vibrant and creative. This year’s Halloween parade was a testament to that with participants as well as spectators elaborately costumed for the occasion. It was another great night in town, and I look forward to the many fun and inspired events our terrific town offers during the holidays.” – Karen Delaney, Executive Director, Chester County Art Association
“It is truly a wonderful life in West Chester during the holiday season—Chester County’s very own Bedford Falls.” –D r. Timothy V. Blair, Dean and Professor of Piano, College of Visual and Performing Arts, West Chester University
“West Chester is a great place to live, work, and have fun year round, but our town during the holidays is simply the best! From Old-Fashioned Christmas to local gift-shopping and enjoying great food and drinks with friends, nothing beats being in West Chester from Thanksgiving through New Year’s. And, of course, we love having people visit us at the Historical Society to get their history fix with family visiting from out of town too.” – Robert Lukens, Ph.D., President, Chester County Historical Society
better now that it kicks off with the Jingle Elf Run, which is a great warm-up for my other favorite event of the weekend: Brian’s Run on Sunday afternoon, the best running event in West Chester (for 36 years)!” – Carol Quigley, Project Manager, Frens & Frens, LLC; Chair, HARB; President, West Chester Film Festival
“It’s not only the obvious: participating in the Jingle Run prior to the spectacular Christmas Parade, meeting friends in town throughout the season and this year looking forward to strolling with the Santa Band. For me, as part of Safe Harbor’s staff, it is seeing not dozens but hundreds of people walk through our doors throughout the holiday season with gifts and donations for the homeless men and women at our shelter. This affirms what makes West Chester a very special place.” – Gina Harrison, Development Director, Safe Harbor Shelter
“A West Chester Christmas is definitely one to remember! The lights, the parade, the shopping, the greens, the great food. Could it get any better? After 25 years in business here, I still love the excitement and joy of the holiday season.” –H olly Brown, President,
Borough Council
“My favorite part of Christmas in West Chester is Old-Fashioned Christmas weekend. I met some of my best friends at the Old-Fashioned Christmas Parade over 10 years ago on a very cold and snowy night in front of Vincent’s (now Side Bar), and we have made watching the parade an annual tradition ever since. The parade is even
“I love the holiday season in West Chester. I start getting into the mood in November when I take my daughters into town to hang greens with the Chamber of Commerce. It has been a holiday tradition for the three of us. Come December, of course, is OldFashioned Christmas, and every year I look forward to seeing the Cartoon Christmas Trio play at Iron Hill. Finally, about a week or so before Christmas, I get a group of guys to together for Men’s Night Out, where we walk around town, shop, and visit the many great restaurants for a beer to keep us warm and motivated. All in all, West Chester is a great place to be during the holidays.” – Kevin Finn, President & CEO, Iron Hill Brewery

John Harton, owner of the Mad Platter THE MUSIC WE LOVE If you grew up in West Chester, odds are good that you purchased your first CD, cassette tape, 8-track, or record from the Mad Platter. Since 1976, the Mad Platter has been West Chester’s source for great music—in any format. “The CD boom of the ‘90s took over most of our floor space,” says owner John Harton. “But we could never bring ourselves to part with the vinyl. It just went into storage. And now it is back with a vengeance.” “One of the things that gives us great satisfaction is seeing people who grew up in the ‘digital age’ set the needle down on a record, kick back to enjoy the album cover artwork, band info, and liner notes and have that same great vinyl record experience that we did back in the day.” After graduating from the University of Delaware in the mid-70s with a degree in political science and a love of music, John and his former business partner, Rusty Krauss, took a look at their job prospects and decided to go into business for themselves. So they sought out a college town that lacked a full-service record store, and the Mad Platter made its home in West Chester. Today John and Debbie Rich, who came on board in 1978, continue to uphold the Mad Platter’s legacy of providing a broad selection of music in a friendly neighborhood environment. As John says, “We are always adapting so that we can stay in our wonderful town of West Chester and enjoy what we love to do.” John Harton photographed in the vinyl library in the back room of the Mad Platter.

ART COMES TO LIFE AT PENN STATE GREAT VALLEY Penn State Great Valley commissioned artist Karen Delaney to create a sculpture to grace the entry to the Henry Gallery. “I created this nine-foot wall sculpture to enhance and signify the entry to the new Henry Gallery on the Penn State Great Valley campus. The top portion of the piece is my interpretation of the architectural design of the central building on campus. The many elements filling the lower area are an abstract representation of the energetic exchange, communication, development and influence the Penn State Great Valley students experience within the walls of PSUGV and project outward to our community.” – Karen Delaney 2014 HENRY GALLERY EXHIBITS AT PENN STATE GREAT VALLEY PA Made in Steel: Industrial Paintings by by Klaus Grutzka and Steel Sculptures by Chester County Art Association Artists January 27 – March 14 Opening Reception January 30 A selection of works from the Graystone Society’s recent acquisition of thousands of original works by Industrial Precisionist Artist Klaus Grutzka.

a Brandywine Valley holiday EXPLOR E . V IS IT. TO U R. E X PE RI E N C E .
you’re INVITED
The rich Brandywine Valley holiday tradition is especially vibrant in the corridor that stretches from West Chester to Kennett Square and the areas beyond. The countryside is home to Longwood Gardens, the inspiration of Pierre S. du Pont, and other du Pont treasures, including Hagley, Nemours and Winterthur. Three generations of the famed artistic Wyeth family were inspired by the region, and the Brandywine River Museum houses the work of N.C., Andrew and Jamie Wyeth, among other American artists. Each of the destinations has created its own unique holiday celebrations to go with its wonderful everyday attractions. World-renowned museums and gardens made famous by the legacy of the du Pont family are the centerpieces of holiday visits. The Hagley Museum, where the du Pont story begins in the Brandywine Valley, offers guided tours and features the original du Pont mills, estate, and gardens.

T H E B R AN DY W I N E RIV ER MU S E U M Brandywine Christmas 1 Hoffman’s Mill Road, Chadds Ford brandywinemuseum.org The Brandywine River Museum is home to an Old-Fashioned Christmas, with decorated trees of handmade organic material, model trains that fill a room, and antique dolls. The holiday show includes dozens of rare antique dolls dressed in beautiful period clothing, some on view in rooms filled with exquisite hand-crafted furnishings and miniature paintings by members of the Wyeth family. One of the most popular displays is the O-gauge model train—one of the largest in the country, with five trains running simultaneously on nearly 2,000 feet of track through a landscape inspired by southeastern Pennsylvania. A Brandywine Christmas is open November 29 – January 5. The museum has extended hours on December 5, 12, 19 and 26 until 9 PM and until 6 PM on December 27 – December 30.

Fresh and In Season 1001 Longwood Road, Kennett Square longwoodgardens.org Many generations helped create Longwood Gardens, but Pierre du Pont—industrialist, conservationist, farmer, designer, impresario, and philanthropist—made the most enduring contribution. Pierre du Pont bought the Peirce farm and soon began creating what would become Longwood Gardens. He followed no grand plan; rather, he built the gardens piecemeal, beginning with the “old-fashioned” Flower Garden Walk. This holiday, extravagant, fruit-adorned trees towering as high as 18 feet stand in the Longwood Gardens Conservator, and red and green apples float in an artistic pattern in the Exhibition Hall. The Music Room display pays homage to the Green Room at the Hotel du Pont in Wilmington, Delaware—featuring sugared fruit-laden trees and a lavish holiday tea set for 18 special guests. Longwood Gardens is adorned for the holiday from November 28 – January 12.

For almost 40 years, Bob Fanelli and a group of his fellow local musicians have been donning the classic Santa look and bringing holiday cheer to the streets of town. “In the beginning we were four guys from a wedding band, and the idea took off,” says Bob, who has stories of singing Silent Night with the nuns at St. Agnes Church, or bringing the Santa Band into a biker bar and unintentionally fostering a family reunion. “Each year, we have some great “ This year the memories.”
