I N N O VA T I O N in·no·va·tion \i-nə-'vā-shən\ noun 1. Something newly introduced; new method, custom, device, etc.; change in the way of doing things. Why, even though innovation is not defined as a negative action, do so many of us cringe at the suggestion of change? Without even realizing it, we all contribute to the world’s continuous evolution; we throw bottles in the recycling bin, we look for our long-lost friends on Facebook, and we turn up our heaters once that first November breeze feels just a little too cold. If we all have the power to make such changes in our own lives, then why not approach innovation in our surroundings with the same fearless attitude? When we all work together, we will be amazed at what’s in store for our future— while never forgetting our past. The world is evolving around us: ideas are spreading, cities are growing, and just about everything is lighting up. It is our job to highlight Doylestown’s most compelling treasures in order to enlighten our friends and family. By sharing our stories we can preserve our town’s authenticity while embracing an influx of new visitors, ideas, and traditions. Here at Fig® Doylestown, we provide the visuals of our town, and we are asking you to provide the voices. As a mother, I know there will be one day when a small voice inside of me will wish that my son had never grown up. I will catch myself quickly, however, because with his growth will come many proud moments, all of which are possible thanks to the opportunity for change and innovation. By looking at our beautiful hometown as a symbol of both our childhood and our future, we must remember that it is important to let it grow. Read on to admire the work of our very own brightest innovators and to marvel in the pride we all share for our home of Doylestown. With gratitude,

the value of a good concierge. They’re the knowledgeable natives around their neck of the woods, the candid connoisseur of local culture. You also know that a good one can be rare. Fortunately for Doylestown, Heather Walton of Class-Harlan Real Estate seems to have been born for such a role. “My passion is for being a ‘first friend’ to people,” she says, “helping them and guiding them from everything from doctors 4 figdoylestown.com

to schools to sports clubs for their kids to the best restaurants, and where to go for music on a Friday night.” Heather moved to the area twenty-two years ago. After a successful career in public relations and marketing, she began selling real estate in 2001, eventually becoming part owner of Class-Harlan. But she doesn’t just sell homes, she sells a lifestyle. “This area is rich in history, arts, culture, education, and opportunity,” she says. “What a gift for me to be able to live here and sell all of that.”

Heather is passionate about her role as concierge, purposefully positioning herself as the expert to go to for everything Doylestown. She created a Facebook page called Destination Doylestown when Facebook first came out with business pages. “I give a lot,” she says, “I believe that kindness matters and that giving comes back, and it has for me tenfold.” Learn more about Heather at classharlan.com.

by promoting positive behaviors via Search Institute's Development Assets which is the framework for all of CB Cares’ programs such as the Boomerang Youth Recognition award.

With a background in the hospitality industry, Cambra made the leap eight and a half years ago into her role as Executive Director of CB Cares Educational Foundation—a community coalition comprised of individuals, organizations, and businesses dedicated to creating a stronger, healthier Central Bucks.

The organization will present the longstanding tradition of Pumpkinfest on October 24th at the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works. Cambra sees this event—for kids of all ages—as an opportunity to convey an important message about ATOD (alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs) prevention amongst our youth.

One of the goals of CB Cares is to communicate the importance of drug and alcohol prevention and awareness

As a self-professed “lover of Doylestown history and culture,” she recently completed a personal project highlighting

the Village Improvement Association—an organization established in 1895 by a group of fourteen women dedicated to improving the quality of life in the Central Bucks community. One hundred twenty years ago, they then went on to found Doylestown Hospital. To mark this significant milestone, Cambra recently completed a documentary “Then, Now and Forever: The History of the Village Improvement Association” which will debut to the public later this fall. Cambra’s infectious passion is her “secret ingredient” that fuels her love for and dedication to Doylestown. Learn more at cb-cares.org.

proud to be one of only two museum venues in the United States for this stellar textile exhibition of thirty-five historical quilts and contemporary patchworks with trans-Atlantic ties. The exhibition features fifteen new patchwork pieces, designed by the internationally renowned textile artist Kaffe Fassett.

A native of San Francisco, Fassett studied painting in Boston before settling in England in 1964. Shortly thereafter he discovered knitting, and his first design appeared as a full page spread in Vogue Knitting magazine. In 1988, his work was the subject of a oneman show at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the first time a living textile artist had such a show there.

In the decades since, Fassett has designed ambitious patterns that have inspired hand knitters all over the world. His work now encompasses designs for textiles and patchwork. His unique sense of color and drive to create has led to his reputation as a guru in the world of color and textiles. This dynamic installation will be on view from November 14, 2015 through February 21, 2016.

COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY LAB

Innovation Starts At Delaware Valley University Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology Developing the skills, knowledge, and experience to apply to become a licensed professional counselor (LPC) The philosophy and overall goal of our Counseling Psychology Program is to educate professionals who are interested in becoming change agents for their clients and the community. Students can choose from two tracks based on their interests: social justice community counseling or child and adolescent counseling. Guided by the question: How can we train our counselors to think within a system where they can best impact people and the community? Using a cohort-based model, our students are cooperative, not competitive, and become advocates for each other. Our senior students mentor our junior students and together they conduct research with faculty—presenting together at conferences and professional associations.

Now is your time. DelVal is your school.

• S tate-of-the-art counseling lab features a large group counseling room and six individual counseling labs. • The lab’s Noldus equipment allows students to practice and develop counseling skills and record sessions while they receive real-time feedback about counseling skill development. FACULTY

•P ractitioner-based instruction with the region’s most progressive, involved clinicians, bringing real-world experiences to classroom discussion. • S mall class sizes give students individualized attention and tailored coursework to fit the class’s interests and abilities.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

Chris Walter is the Clinical Coordinator for the Graduate Counseling Psychology Program at Delaware Valley University– a graduate school program quickly becoming known for its innovative, real-world approach of preparing students to enter a competitive workforce. One of the main aspects of Walter’s role, and central to the philosophy of the program, is overseeing the student practicum and internship experiences. Upon receiving his undergraduate degree in Psychology, he became employed as a childcare worker. His interest in the field grew, and his experiences led him to pursue a Master’s degree, knowing that a graduate degree would provide him with broader career opportunities. It was the cutting-edge, sophisticated technology used in the counseling lab combined with the cohort-based model that attracted him to Delaware Valley University. The innovative lab allows students to record themselves practicing counseling skills and give and receive feedback from peers and faculty. “Our Graduate Counseling Psychology Program was intentionally designed to be small so that students get to know the faculty and staff,” said Walter. “Students receive a lot of individualized attention during their time in the program, including opportunities to pursue research with faculty and to attend and present at local, regional, and national conferences.”

“ Our counseling lab was built with very sophisticated and user-friendly recording technology. Students have the opportunity to record themselves practicing counseling skills and give and receive feedback from peers and faculty.”

The synergy between faculty, staff, and students, is combined with adaptive technology and a program built upon continually implemented counseling skills. Graduates of the Counseling Psychology Program are professionally prepared through practical, supervised experiences in order to become advocates for families and the communities they serve.

W H AT D O E S IT MEAN TO

shop local?

with the holiday season fast approaching, it is important for our community

to understand the impact of shopping at our local businesses in Doylestown. Maybe out of habit or perhaps convenience, we choose to go to the mall, or a chain store on the outskirts of town. However, the following statistics might make you think twice this year. Remember, the shops that keep downtown Doylestown alive also keep our community flourishing. W E N DY M A R G O L I S

DON BERK

“ D oylestown is a vibrant, award-winning community and shopping local will help keep it that way.”

• Residential neighborhoods served by a successful independent business district gained, on average, 50% more in home values than their citywide markets. • Small businesses accounted for 65% of all net new jobs over the past 17 years. • If independent businesses regained their 1990 market shares, it would create 200,000 new small businesses, generate nearly $300 billion in revenues, and employ more than 1.6 million American workers. *Sources: Small Business Administration; Intuit Small Business Innovation Study; American Express OPEN Independent Retail Index; Civic Economics/American Booksellers Assoc., U.S. Dept. of Labor

at eiseman construction, we believe in the power of community. We believe that the foundation to a solid community is laid one shingle at a time.

The No Roof Left Behind program gives people a way to help their neighbors who need a helping hand, and provides Eiseman Construction a way to give our time and talent to help foster that belief. Joe and Kathleen McHale were nominated by one of their Lower Bucks neighbors in Trevose. George Shaver, a volunteer Plumsteadville firefighter, was nominated by the Doylestown VFW. These three were the proud winners of new roofs this past summer. We were ready and willing, with hammers in hand, to help this wonderful Bucks County community. Shingle by shingle, nail by nail, we felt honored to serve. Go to www.eiseman.biz to nominate yourself or a neighbor and watch a short video about the project. 32 110 south sand road, new britain 215.345.9159 www.eiseman.biz
