Art is everywhere. The beautiful colors in a landscape painting. The art of the dance. The musical notes emanating from a guitar. The words on an author’s page.
T
he arts are thriving in Doylestown, and at Fig®, we’d like to signify the importance of supporting the creators of the works. Supporting the arts begins with supporting the artists, and by artists we mean visual, performing, literary, and everything in between. From the earlier days of the well-known “Bucks County Impressionists” movement to the current movement of multimedia disciplines, artists Supporting the of all types have long flocked to this region, and Doylestown is arts begins with a lucky winner to have such a supporting the plethora of talent in its midst. You may run into an artist on artists... the street like David Ohlerking literally creating a painting before your eyes, or musicians at a gig belting out a tune they just wrote. Stop. Look. Listen. And say thank you. Entities like the Arts and Cultural Council of Bucks County (ACCBC) and the Michener Art Museum have directories and databases of local artists, artisans, writers, performers, and more, emphasizing the accessibility of art and artists in a community like Doylestown. Galleries and boutiques all around town have art for sale at prices for every budget, much of it by local artists. If you’re out and about shopping in town or meeting friends for a meal or a summer happy hour, check out a gallery or a gig. Purchase a painting or a print. Hire a musician or a writer. Buy a piece of handmade jewelry. Take in the arts, right here at home and help keep creativity flourishing for years to come. Janine Carroll, Managing Editor

25th-anniversary year culminating in the much-anticipated Grace Kelly exhibit, these two towers of cultural arts are unequaled. And it doesn’t stop with the collections; for instance, the programs offered at the Michener are many—from artist studio tours to art workshops for kids to live jazz and lectures in the stunning Edgar N. Putman Event Pavilion. There are organizations like The Arts and Cultural Council of Bucks County that provide support and advocacy to the local arts scene, and educational destinations like the tried and true Doylestown Library. In this day and age of digital technology, when was the last time you stopped by the library for a good old-fashioned book? As a Doylestown dad recently shared with us, he loves taking books out from the library and going next door to the Michener with his young son to read together in the sculpture garden. If that’s not the best way to spend a morning, we don’t know what is.
...and here.
For kids or kids at heart, Doylestown is a happening place to be, with summer arts
programs galore, including music, dance, art, and more. Like books? Like film? Go to a book signing or dodge the summer heat with classic films, indie features, and family movie mornings at The County Theater. Like music? Take in some jazz or folk at several venues with live music outdoors in the summer including the Puck Patio, a downtown favorite, or bring a picnic to one or several of the free concerts peppered through the parks. Like food? Like art? Dine indoors or al fresco around town after taking in galleries like The Chapman Gallery, specializing in original work by local artists. Enjoy a feast for the eyes and the palette with an ice cream and visit to the Star Tile Garden, or a feast for the brain with some outdoor chess on a Saturday morning at the Doylestown Historical Society.
Think about it. The two major museums in Doylestown have both undergone recent expansions, and they are both within walking distance of the very crossroads of town.
The icing on the seasonal cake is the annual Doylestown Arts Fest in early September, bringing the best in handmade art and crafts along with live music at multiple street corners and the thrilling, not-to-bemissed bike race with 35 high-speed laps through the borough. The diversity of arts and culture is everywhere in Doylestown. It’s amazing what you can see when you take a deeper look.

A Wise Woman Once Said… “You have to have it in your heart to do something.”
T
hat wise woman is Doreen Stratton, and being authentic comes naturally to her. Born and raised in the Doylestown house settled by her grandparents in 1896, Doreen continues, “When you live long enough, your life experiences come to you and they become contributions to the town. They become the gifts that you give back.” A historian, speaker, writer, researcher, photographer, master gardener, and more, at 71 years young, Doreen’s career spanned marketing, manufacturing, human resources and working for the County of Bucks Government. She helped develop a youth intervention program, visited state prisons with the Vietnam Veterans Association and served on the Maasai Cultural Exchange Project steering committee, providing clean water and education in East Africa. In 1999, Doreen traveled to Ghana as the photographer for a teen “When you live program, which is what first sparked her interest long enough, your in learning more about her own ancestry. Proudly life experiences referring to herself as come to you and “tri-racial,” she now they become helps educate the public on the deep history of contributions to Doylestown as a route on the Underground the town. Recently, become the gifts Doreen led talks at the Doylestown Historical that you give back.” Society for an exhibit corresponding with “The North Star,” a film based on a true story about an escaped slave who found freedom in Bucks County.

These days she prefers keeping it local, volunteering with the CB West High School Hall of Fame Committee, veterans groups, local politics, and the Doylestown Memorial Day parade. “I love being involved in the community, helping veterans, talking about the history of this town, and helping at my high school,” she says. “I’d like to say to everybody, ‘Get involved. Do something’. There’s so much that can be done and I’m having fun.”

“Join the James A. Michener Art Museum this summer for exciting events and inspiring art.”
he Michener Art Museum is definitely the coolest place to be this summer. Take some time on one of those lovely temperate days to stroll the grounds and be inspired by more than an idyllic breeze. The new landscaping on Pine Street has taken off, the trees are filling out, and the grass conjures childhood memories of running barefoot. And speaking of memories, the Burro of Doylestown is back, from the Miles of Mules event from a decade ago. Steele, bronze and granite sculpture grace the façade of the museum and line the paths and walkways between the Bucks County Library and the Michener. Absorb the beauty of our natural and artistic environment or sit on a bench in the installation entitled Prison, musing ironically how a place of confinement and hopelessness could be magically transformed into a place of hope, dreams and inspiration. If we could turn a prison into an art museum, just think what we could do with one of your afternoons.

W
anna play some Bowie? How about the Rolling Stones? Hmmmm, maybe even KISS in full makeup? Or Elvis, or folk heroes or that band called The Beatles? It’s all part of the program at The School of Rock (SOR). At first glance and at first listen, one might think that SOR is about music. Indeed it is. But it’s about so much more than that. It’s called confidence and it’s the icing on the
cake of the on-stage performances. There’s a transformation that happens when kids pick up a guitar and get on a stage or mentor younger kids or are mentored by an older kid playing a classic guitar riff. Owners Mike Morpurgo and Annie Morton see it time and time again. Annie describes a transformation that often occurs, from shy to stage-ready, and Mike adds,
“Because of the mentoring process at SOR, the program only works if I have all different age groups and ability levels playing together.” Tracey DeLellis has seen the impact on her boys, and is happy to share her thoughts with other parents: “It’s like family here. You have to support each other and work together. I feel that my kids learned more about teamwork at School of Rock than in sports.”

giving back Giving back with unstoppable determination. That’s Lynn Goldman. A woman who knows how to pay it forward, Lynn has been chairman of the committee to build the Doylestown Bike and Hike System since its origination in 1992. Then the unthinkable happened: Her niece was killed while bicycling.
T
his motivated Lynn to steer the committee toward more safety on the Doylestown Bike and Hike System, consisting of over 20 miles of trails. Lynn’s degree in horticulture from The Barnes Foundation was instrumental in creating a tribute garden to her niece in Burpee Park. Serving as board chair to this day, Lynn helped develop the bike path on the Parkway, and with the support of the Bucks County Park System, she is looking to extend the trail to Peace Valley.
Owner of PUCK, (a live music venue in Doylestown), and wife of William L. Goldman, Jr. of Goldman Law Offices, Lynn thrives on getting things done and connecting people. She serves on the board of the Doylestown Hospital Authority and was instrumental in building the community gardens, an open space park for apartment dwellers. The Goldmans also provided space and were part of creating Star Garden and Manion Way Tile Garden, a place of reflection to honor veterans. Lynn was very active in saving the Borough Dam, chaired Doylestown Borough’s First Night Celebration in 2000, was co-chair of the Doylestown Bicentennial, and is very involved in community fundraising events at PUCK. “It’s in me to give back. I’m so appreciative of the town and the people,” remarks Goldman. “I consider it my responsibility; I’ve been able to raise my children here and it’s a way of saying thank you.”
With a smile and a deep commitment to serving, Lynn says, “All my projects are personal; they add value to the quality of life in the borough. They have a beginning and an end. I see them through, pause, then wait for the next one to show itself.”

How does Shiatsu work? Shiatsu moves stagnant energy, removes blockages, and creates balance in the body’s energy systems. By applying firm pressure to energy points, the flow of “chi” or “life force” is restored. Shiatsu practitioners help facilitate this change. Over time, the body begins to feel calmer, rejuvenated, balanced, and more energized.

Miracolo means miracle, and for owner Michael Guagliardo, it’s a dream come true. Focusing on customer experience and beautiful hair, Michael has built a reputation that has his clients coming back for more and bringing their friends.
W
ith a dry hair cutting technique, spectacular color correcting, and an exclusive product line, Miracolo offers a one-stop style experience. Have a glass of wine and enjoy the makeup room, boutique, iPads around the salon, the free Miracolo app, and the ever popular Blow Dry Bar, which Michael debuted when he recently moved the salon to its new location in the borough. All the rage in New York & LA, the Blow Dry Bar is the first of its kind in Doylestown, and is perfect for bridal parties, running between the gym and work, special events, holidays, a day out with the girls, or simply for a quick pick me up.
Michael Guagliardo, owner of Miracolo Hair Studio
Michael grew up in Lahaska and honed his craft in New York, Philadelphia, and even Milan. When he wanted to open his own salon, he saw how Doylestown had evolved and knew it would be a good fit. Guagliardo keeps things fresh by furthering education amongst his staff. “My passion is that I love to create and be creative,” he says. “I love to pass that on to my stylists and apprentices; I love to inspire and teach how to be a great hairdresser.” Michael also gives back by donating hair to Locks of Love, running a fashion show for breast cancer research, sponsoring Ride for the Heroes and donating baskets to local charities. A visit to Miracolo is experiential as Michael puts into his own artistic words: “When it comes to creating hair, it’s like a blank canvas and I love to be the one to draw the picture.”

Got laundry? Kevin E. Roberts can help.
A
fter three years in Warminster, The Laundry Room is expanding to a second location in the heart of Doylestown and we’re here to say, this is “not your father’s Laundromat.” Kevin’s strategy is clear: Focus on the customer and provide the best experience they can have. Sure, it’s about clean clothes, but for Kevin, it’s about the customer seeing it less like a chore and more like a pleasant experience. Recognizing “I wanted to that Laundromats have not traditionally been aesthetically reinvent the appealing, Kevin’s intention is to laundromat turn that notion on its head and make The Laundry Room clean, industry.” comfortable, and inviting, filled with light, brand new machines, cable TV, and free Wi-Fi, not to mention the USB charging stations. Leveraging long time Doylestowners’ memories of “that Laundromat on South Clinton,” Kevin saw the value in maintaining the location, but that’s just about it. Everything else about The Laundry Room is the crystal clear vision and business savvy of Kevin E. Roberts.

Born in Doylestown and raised in upper Bucks County, Kevin always had an entrepreneurial spirit, starting with buying cars as a teenager to fix up and sell on eBay. He served in the Air Force for four years as a helicopter flight engineer, and received his MBA in Entrepreneurship from Del Val College. Though he found the military a bit too regimented for his style, Kevin is proud of his service and being a Veteran Owned business. “I wanted to reinvent the Laundromat industry,” he says. “The Laundry Room is unconventional; we’re an extension of the laundry room at your own home.” Kevin is also happy to report he’ll soon be opening a third location in Lambertville, NJ.

local icon: W. Atlee Burpee With a history as rich as Pennsylvania’s finest soil, it’s no surprise that the famous Burpee Seed brand sprouted in Doylestown over 100 years ago.
❧ Visiting History Find W. Atlee Burpee’s grave in the Historic Doylestown Cemetery—and take a tour to learn more.
A
tlee Burpee, born in 1858, was expected to become a physician like his father and grandfather, but even in his early youth he seemed determined to pursue a different career. As a boy he developed an acute interest in breeding chickens—a rather unexpected hobby that soon expanded to include the breeding of livestock, dogs, and plants. The new science of genetics fascinated him—and selective breeding eventually led to a successful livestock and seed business. Atlee spent many summers traveling through Europe and the United States, visiting farms and searching for the best flowers and vegetables. Burpee seeds came with a satisfaction guarantee that still exists to this day—a marketing slogan that has stood the test of time and generations of home gardeners.
