hands-on art The arts have a way of stirring the senses, evoking emotion, and changing perspectives. Whether we’re watching dancers twirl and leap across a stage, taking in the colorful brush strokes of a painting, reading a moving sonnet, or listening to live music, we can feel that the arts have the power to transform, to change lives, and to bring community together. Take the work of local dancer and choreographer Nora Fitzgerald, who harnesses the power of dance and movement to build positive energy and confidence in young girls. Or consider how listening to live music, be it Bach’s cello suites or The Sermon! at Side Bar, can lift spirits and transform a bad day into a great one with the right note.

Community Supporters Our Community Supporters believe in the power of a thriving downtown. Meet them starting on page 52: Plantation Field International Horse Trials, Brandywine River Museum, Penns Woods Winery, Garden Spot Village, Otto’s MINI, Crozer-Keystone Health System, Otto’s BMW, Jeffrey Leiss, DDS, ACAC Fitness & Wellness Centers, Brandywine Valley Wine Trail, The Whip, & Proto Landscape Design.

In this issue you’ll find examples of fantastic art all around us in West Chester. Did you know that West Chester University hosts the largest allpoetry writing conference in the country? Kim Bridgford, award-winning poet and Director of the West Chester Poetry Center, also hosts readings and poetry salons year-round. Turn a page and meet the wonderful locals who are supporting the capital campaign to construct a new building for the beloved Chester County Art Association. Take a look inside Sunset Hill Jewelers and Fine Arts Gallery for a glimpse of the great work of West Chester native Harry Dunn (if you haven’t visited this exhibit in person, now’s the time!). This issue also includes an eclectic gallery of local visual artists—painters and sculptors working in a variety of mediums. Best of all, we take a peek inside the studios and creative spaces of artists at work: Rhoda Kahler’s sculpture studio, Erica Brown’s colorful wax-covered studio space, Monique Kendikian-Sarkessian’s inspiration found in fields of lavender, and the “Barn Lady” painting outdoors en plein air. As Jamie Wyeth once said about his father Andrew, “My father’s studio is the nearest one can get to physically entering his world.” Where creativity lives, great communities will grow. The Next Generation of Kooma

Scott Kim (owner) & Steve Kang (manager)

With a reputation for providing a world-class Asian-fusion dining experience right in the heart of West Chester, it’s no surprise that Kooma’s popularity has continued to grow. For ten years Kooma has been well-loved for their fresh sushi and sashimi, Eastern cuisine, and inventive cocktails (like the cucumber saketini). When a restaurant is great, word travels fast. A crowded eatery is a wonderful problem to have, but can be a frustrating experience for diners seeking a last-minute seating. So when owner Scott Kim found a venue on North Church Street that would double the size of his existing Gay Street location, the decision was easy. This fall, “the next generation of Kooma” opens its doors in a newly renovated location at 123 North Church Street. Aside from providing a much larger space, the new venue includes a private room for meetings and parties and pairs state-of-the-art technology with fashionable, trendy décor. Scott Kim refers to Kooma’s new look as the “Las Vegas concept”—presenting a family-friendly restaurant by day and a chill lounge environment by night. Imagine glass walls that change colors and two full bars bordering the dining area: one for Kooma’s infamous beverages, the other for their sushi chefs. With an exciting new look and freshly renovated space, Scott Kim and his team look forward to carrying on Kooma’s tradition of excellence at their new place. As for the former Kooma location, that will remain as KoomaViet (an upscale Chinese and Vietnamese restaurant) and Kooma to Go (for those seeking a quick take-out alternative). Changes are afoot for Scott Kim and his family, too. As of this fall, they’ll also be West Chester residents. Join Fig® in welcoming Scott to the West Chester community and celebrating the next generation of Kooma!

finding the right balance

GRAND OPENING! September 5th 150 East Gay Street 610.314.4300

Thomas Crisp & Biff Piner create a perfect blend of creativity and personalized customer service. Thomas Crisp and Biff Piner know that balance means feeling great inside and out. For six years they’ve helped clients look and feel their very best at their Exton-based Balance Hair Spa, where expert hair coloring and design meet a full range of spa services and a wealth of all-natural products. This fall, Thomas and Biff are expanding their brand with the opening of Balance Hair Spa Studio at 150 East Gay Street in downtown West Chester. Located across from the newly relocated Roots Café, Balance Hair Spa Studio will impress guests with a fresh look, a relaxing environment, and an enthusiastic, well-educated staff. Education is part of the salon’s culture, and clients are provided with little extras at every turn (including free Wi-Fi, organic beverages, and plastic sleeves to shield glasses during color sessions). “We want our clients to have a relationship with our brand, and develop trust,” Biff said. To that end, the Balance staff offers consultations as a team. “You might have three people talking about your hair,” said Thomas. This approach enables a more flexible clientstylist relationship. Rather than choosing one stylist to work with, Balance Hair Spa encourages working with many. Whether taking an appointment with a lead stylist or one of Balance Hair Spa’s “new talent” (those with under five years’ experience), clients can expect to leave feeling better than when they walked in. “No matter who they’re seeing, our clients know that they can expect great service, a great haircut, and great conversation,” said Biff. “We have a very tight group,” said Thomas. “We want to keep that perfect balance.” READ MORE > figwestchester.com/ balancehairspa

leading the way to a creative future Rendering of the new CCAA (construction due to start in 2014)

Major renovations are on the horizon at the Chester County Art Association. The $3.5 million Capital Campaign supports CCAA’s addition and renovations, which will include a new ceramics studio with an outdoor studio terrace, digital media studios, improvements to the existing lobby and outer facade, and the unveiling of totally re-designed and improved exhibition and classroom spaces. Environmental sustainability and building upgrades will allow CCAA to participate in new technologies available to the arts. These renovations will ensure that CCAA’s important contributions to the arts and the community will be available for future generations.

“ The most important thing is that the Chester County Art Association has been able to grow. I have watched CCAA evolve. The expansion and renovations are exciting, and we have needed more space for a long time. The ideas for these improvements are ready to go. It will be fun watching CCAA continue to grow because the art center will be so worth visiting.” – PENELOPE WILSON, CCAA Patron

Lele Galer

I paint a vision of the uncommon in the common, eliminating unnecessary elements that distract and have no meaning ... a wabi-sabi approach to art: “if an object or expression can bring about, within us, a sense of melancholy and a spiritual longing, then that object could be said to be wabi-sabi.

MEd, MFA, a juried member of the Pastel Society of America, recently returned from an artist residency at the Vermont Studio Center. Her work is a study of light, shadow, and color, as can be seen in this pastel of The Quarry Swim Club in Westtown.

Lele’s oil and encaustic paintings are inspired by ancient places that evoke a feeling of mystery and beauty. Subject matter includes dense tall forests, Roman temples, and French cathedrals. Lele renders the strength and solidity of the vertical forms of buildings and trees in juxtaposition to the color and shadow masses that make up their environment. Showing locally at Galer Estate Winery in Kennett Square.

Signe Sundberg-Hall

Steven Mogck

Emily Wilkins

From the microcosm of a pond, to rolling pastures and coastal vistas, Signe observes the interaction of earth and sky. Engaging color & light with a poet’s vision, she creates a particular energy of time and place. Represented by Hardcastle Gallery & Lambertville Gallery of Fine Art. Her work is featured in Quillman’s book 100 Artists of the Brandywine Valley.

Steven fuses mixed-media works of abstract qualities with his training in illustration. Over the years Steven’s works have been chosen by curators from The Guggenheim Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Gladstone Gallery. Steven studied illustration at Pratt Institute and graduated from West Chester University with a BFA in Studio Arts.

Her ceramic work reflects the investigation of imagination, growth, and development of product through a strong symbolic language. Within her exploration she incorporates idea, process, and product using abundance, layers, and shape to create her conceptualized pieces.

Paul Gilmore Paul Gilmore has always been fascinated with the magnificence of the great masters. He studied for six years at Brandywine Atelier (now Studio Relievo) under Neilson Carlin and four years at Studio Incamminati under Nelson Shanks. His training in traditional realism includes essentials of drawing and painting from cast, live figure, portrait, still life and landscape. “Doing a landscape painting on the edge of a corn field or a long figure pose in a studio inspires me,” Paul states. “My goal is to reach the footsteps of the great masters.” pfgilmore@verizon.net

Featured Artist Lin Webber is known for her Chester County landscapes. She says, “Providing original art for patient and public rooms makes a lot of sense. Sometimes you just need to lose yourself in something else beyond your health while waiting to be well enough to go home.” Her painting Pine Creek has been publicly displayed on the first floor outside the President/CEO’s office since 2011.

From the outside, our Hospital’s new 93,000square-foot patient tower looks pretty much like any other building of similar size and scale. Inside, the Tree at the Boathouse by Sandra Sigley Tower can accommodate up to 72 private patient rooms, all equipped with the highest level of monitoring capabilities and designed to meet the medical, surgical, intermediate and intensive care needs of our rapidly growing community. The fourth floor of the Tower is home to a Telemetry unit. Telemetry— the practice of sending continuously monitored electronic signals from one place to another—is a tremendously useful tool. It allows our healthcare team to monitor heart rates, heart rhythms, breathing and other vital signs by the patient’s bed, at the nurses’ station and in a centralized monitoring room. Our medical personnel can detect emergent health concerns before they become problems so a clinician can quickly address them. The Tower’s fourth floor

is now also home to 26 pieces of donated artwork that adorn the walls of patient rooms, the waiting room and the family lounge. Healing Art Works is a nonprofit organization committed to enhancing the well-being of patients, their families and medical staff by placing original, donated artwork in patient spaces at medical centers and outpatient facilities. The organization has worked with the Hospital over a two-year period to display original Party Time by Terri Morse artwork from generous and talented artists nationwide. Adding unique works of art in patient care spaces complements the Hospital’s commitment to “Making Lives Better Every Day.” Healing Art Works’ contribution to this effort is making a difference for our patients, families and staff members who spend time in the Tower. The Hospital thanks and acknowledges Healing Art Works and its many artists for sharing this tremendous gift.

Discover the Wit & Wonder of West Chester’s own Harry Dunn On the second floor of Sunset Hill Fine Arts Gallery in downtown West Chester, something peculiar—and wonderful—awaits visitors. It’s an entire floor dedicated to the work of one artist. “Harry was as colorful, whimsical, and satirical as his work,” says friend and admirer Sandy Riper. Diversity was a key component to Harry Dunn’s artistic style. Working in many mediums, including acrylic, ink, collage, and primitive stamps, Harry was inspired by all things around him. His whimsical works are a part of West Chester’s history and well loved by many who have lived in the area and had the pleasure of knowing him.

After graduating from the Philadelphia College of Arts (now the University of the Arts), Harry served in the U.S. Army as an illustrator. He went on to work in advertising in New York City and is credited with having a hand in the creation of the now infamous NBC peacock and the cartoon character Mr. Magoo. Harry was also very generous with his time and mentored many of today’s successful artists. Although he passed away in 1998, he legacy and spirit lives on through his paintings and the Harry Dunn Memorial Art Scholarship, awarded to graduating art students from West Chester area high schools.

giving back

Of all the gifts of childhood, the capacity for joy, enthusiasm, and fearless self-expression are surely at the forefront. But as we get older, it can be easy to lose sight of that carefree sense of self. Dancer and choreographer Nora Fitzgerald grew up learning in a traditional dance academy and saw the need for an opportunity for girls to dance for the fun of it. “They just want to dance because it feels good,” Nora said. This awareness led Nora to create Confi-dance: a dance class designed to support personal growth and build self-esteem. Nora has been 44

During class, I’m very aware of what the girls are needing, and the importance of giving them a voice. Sometimes they just want to be heard.

teaching Confi-dance at Turks Head Yoga in West Chester since 2012, offering girls in grades 1-8 the opportunity to dance in a supportive and judgment-free environment—with no experience necessary. While some dance studios focus on training their students for life on the stage, goals at Confi-dance include “smiling, laughing, exercise, appreciating others’ strengths, love of dance, love for oneself!” Through Confi-dance, Nora wants to help girls learn “to respect each other and respect themselves” at a young age, before the selfconsciousness and vulnerability that can go hand-in-hand with the teenage years sets in.

“It’s important to reach girls when they’re fearless,” Nora said. At Confi-dance, classes begin with circle time, where students have an opportunity to share stories from their week, name a favorite color, or list their greatest fear. During class, I’m very aware of what the girls are saying, and of giving them a voice,” said Nora. “Sometimes they just want to be heard.” Nora credits the West Chester community and Debra Hess of Turks Head Yoga for getting Confi-dance off to a great start. “What better community to start this?” Get in touch with Nora and learn more at myconfidance.com

authentic: Kim Bridgford

Some people enjoy poetry the way one would a decadent dessert: sparingly, but with reverence. Others, like West Chester University’s Kim Bridgford, live and breathe it. An award-winning poet, Kim is the director of the West Chester University Poetry Center and the longstanding West Chester University Poetry Conference, the largest all-poetry writing conference in the United States. Her work at the Poetry Center includes hosting poetry readings, student events, and satellite events—such as a very well-received celebration at New York City’s 92nd Street Y that was featured in The New York Times. Kim is also editor-in-chief of Mezzo Cammin, a journal of poetry by women. Recently we asked Kim about her vision for the Poetry Conference and West Chester’s literary arts.

The Poetry Conference is blessed to have its location in West Chester, with its beautiful downtown. This is a community that supports and nourishes the arts.

“While the conference has always had an emphasis on form and narrative, we have worked to make it more global and inclusive. Our credo is ‘grandeur and kindness,’ and our speakers have included some of the best poets in the United States and around the world. We also have a special concert each year (artists such as Natalie Merchant have performed).” “The Poetry Conference is blessed to have its location in West Chester, with its beautiful downtown. This is a community that supports and nourishes the arts. For example, Kean Spencer, a resident of West Chester, has established national awards for undergraduates, and these talented young people travel from all over the United States to attend the conference and read their poetry. At the Art Trust, we had a wonderful collaboration between poets and visual artists at this year’s West Chester University Poetry Conference. This is a great way for different communities to mingle and have a conversation with a common purpose.” “During the school year, we have a poet-in-residence series. Since 2010, we have had Micheal O’Siadhail, Anne Stevenson, Fred Chappell, and this year Kay Ryan, who recently was honored at the White House.” At Fig®, we celebrate Kim Bridgford’s efforts to sustain such a vibrant, thriving literary presence in our community. Meet Kim at the Poetry Conference June 7, 2014. Find out more at wcupoetrycenter.com.

The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Jackson Five—In the 1960’s some of the most iconic names in the history of popular music were discovered in the Motor City, better known as Motown.
