COSMOWHITE®. The Leather Revolution.

COSMOWHITE® comes into being, the innovative process enabling completely heavy metal-free leathers with a negligible amount of formaldehyde well below current limits set by any supply specifications. Leathers tanned with COSMOWHITE® are more than 90% biodegradable and do not release phytotoxic and chemical-toxic substances in line with eco-toxicology criteria to safeguard health and the environment as established by REACH. COSMOWHITE® allows eco-sustainable leathers with high tolerability for those who wear them while retaining extremely high quality, handle and performance of leathers processed with traditional products.

Events Interview

WLC SHANGHAI, THE RIGHT PLACE IN THE RIGHT TIME Third edition, third different continent. After Latin America (Brazil, 2011) and Europe (Italy, 2015), now it’s the turn of Asia and China in particular, that will host the 2017 World Leather Congress Mr. Richard Pai organized jointly by the tannery associations of China (CLIA) and Taiwan (TILA), which have thus launched a far from obvious drive signal in the Asian continent. As per tradition, the choice of location fell on the continent of the ICT (International Council of Tanners) president, elected in 2016, the Taiwanese Richard Pai, TILA’s chairman and Joinland Tanning Group’s CEO. Pai is convinced that Asia is the right place to deal with the theme ‘the Leather Revolution’, around which speech and conference activities will revolve. Mr. Pai, what’s the state of the art for world leather economy? The World leather industry is currently going through a period of considerable uncertainty, which, to a significant extent, is a reflection of the uncertainty of the global economic situation. Looking globally, there has been a substantial slowdown in the Chinese leather industry, which has been a driving force behind the growth of the worldwide industry, plus, there is uncertainty in Europe – not helped by the BREXIT vote in the UK – and also uncertainty over future industry and trade developments following the US Presidential election. In parallel with all of this have been some significant currency fluctuations that have added further uncertainty. Following the global financial crisis in 2008/9, economies in general and also the leather sector enjoyed something of a recovery up to 2012/13, but since then the markets have slowed. Any consequence of this slow-down? The main impact has come from China, especially in the very important footwear sector. More recent signs have been that even 38 Tannery International

the dynamic automotive sector has been slowing down. Some specialised sectors of the leather industry have held up reasonably well – the high-quality sectors and parts of the fashion/ leathergoods sectors, but even here the situation is patchy. There is some concern that the rapid increase in raw material and leather prices from 2009 to 2012/3 might have resulted in some permanent shifts in the market. Looking forward, the key questions are: what and where next? Why Asia, and particularly Shanghai, is the right place to discuss changes for the next 20 years? Asia, with Shanghai as a centre, is a crucial element of any discussion of the next 20 years for the leather industry. If one looks at the trends, over the last two decades, Asia is the area – and especially China – that has contributed virtually all of the growth in the world leather industry. The key point now is that this is changing – the industry in China is slowing down, at the same time as a significant amount of relocation to other parts of South East Asia – and to Africa – with investments from China and Taiwan being important part of this. In addition to this, there is a strong belief that it is important to have an insight into the new (in their 30s) Chinese consumers. This is not only because they are themselves an important market sector, but more important, there is the theory that what is happening in China now – with the new generation of young, non-traditional, mobile and urban consumers - is a vision of the future for the rest of the world. What kind of indications can WLC give to the world leather economy? Why people involved in this business should participate to this important meeting? The WLC will not only bring together all the different parts of the leather marketing chain to allow an important opportunity to exchange information, views and visions. It will also provide key insights into how the market and the industry is likely to develop going forward. At a period of uncertainty in the sector, and the global economy in general, it is more than ever vital for industry decision makers to plan and position their businesses to give them the best chance to be in the right place at the right time.

The challenge of the value in a world with limited resources Looking at the next two decades. It is a difficult challenge, the one that will be launched for the third World Leather Congress which will be held in Shanghai this year (August 30th- September 1st). Predictions, you know, are made to be disproved, but the context in which the leather industry moves is clear enough to be able to delineate the strategies by which international players will move to give a future to their companies, workers and generally to the industry. First of all, the world continues to grow at a spectacular pace, driven by population dynamics which is both a resource and a threat. It took 187 years (1800-1987) to climb from 1 to 5 billion inhabitants of the planet, only 30 years to get to 7.5 billion. In 2050, according to estimates made by the UN, the world population will reach 9.7 billion. It’s quote logical to think that the men and women of the future will have to live in a world in which, out of the most catastrophic scenarios, they will have limited resources. The waste will no longer be contemplated and the main challenge will consist in the optimization of raw materials, due to increasingly large investments in technology and business organization. This is even more true for the leather industry, which has as its mission the promotion of a food by-product, and that must use what slaughterhouses will be able to provide to tanneries. It is also logical that the growth of the animal population will be less than the demand for leather for garment, footwear and accessories, natural destinations of this material, the dynamics of which is proportional to the development of the population and average income. Prospecting for alternative materials responds to the necessity of producing shoes for all those who need it, avoiding dependence on a limited source. For this same reason, luxury holdings decided to invest directly in the tanning business, also if they lose money: their goal is the control of the upstream operations in the supply chain to avoid, in the future, not to have more gas with which to move a great machine which generates

enormous profits, unknown in other industries. The challenge of the next twenty years, under the circumstances, is that of value. Leather will be more and more synonymous with high quality, regardless of the intended use. This will be for the personal goods as well as for the house and for the industry in motion as airplanes, trains and other public vehicles, with the only doubt of cars that we can not imagine how it will be in twenty years, but we certainly know that on the individual movements will be played one of the most stimulating matches of the scientific research connected to the internet of things and smart mobility. Leather will be element of prestige, but for this will have to protect its image of up-level good, becoming unassailable. The technology will have to study so powerful weapons in terms of sustainability, ethics and respect for the environment, to enable the industries to defend themselves from the many enemies that threaten them. The use of natural resources must be implemented according to the principles of circular economy which, we emphasize, fully identify the identity of the tanning industry: use, and not exploitation, of an alive, reproducible, destined to be transformed and during the time raw material. More than to the raw hides and skins, the attention in the green key will then be stored for re-use of tanning water, energy selfsufficiency and the use of environmentally friendly chemicals. These are all aspects already underway in Europe and some of the most developed non-EU areas. And the “natural” approach of tanning to the places of origin of the animal raw materials, which today can be identified in Africa and Latin America, will no longer tolerate the phenomena of “wild” or non ethical production, without recourse to water purification and without a real respect for workers’ rights. The future of the oldest of human industrial activity is therefore linked to its ability to prepare for a better future and to the ambition to be the spearhead of the world industry. A. Leather dyers select dyes on the basis of hue, application and fastness properties, as well as for their tinctorial strength-cost factor. Most of these dyes are chosen from the huge textile dye ranges. A minority of the dyes is designed only for leather and includes modern fur dyes, which are entirely wool dyes. Leather manufacture today is subject to economic conditions such as high raw material prices and stringent environmental regulations. The available savings potential has, therefore, to be optimized, necessitating measures such as product mix optimization, efficient process technologies, and selection of efficient chemicals and optimal dyes. Tanning and dyeing are inseparably interlinked in leather processing. The process of tanning is the heart of leather making. It gives leather its own color to a certain degree, which will influence the final shade and its brilliance. www.researchgate.net
