F ROM THE HE ADMA S TER Gratitude is a word we do not take lightly at Mount Paran Christian School. From the Latin root Gratitudinem, we derive our word for thankfulness. At MPCS, we are truly thankful and grateful for the ways our many constituents – past and present – have blessed this amazing institution. As a result, the special edition of our school magazine Wingspan, has been named Gratitude. As a relative newcomer, I am excited about how we, at MPCS, view one another – as those who are made in the image of God, the Imago Dei. The idea of the Imago Dei is one that enables us to envision our peers, our students, our teachers, and our leadership as diverse members of one family. While we come from different neighborhoods, some (including this new transplant) from different states, and even others from different countries around the globe, we all are uniquely created in His image, inside and out. The uniqueness we find in each student allows us to differentiate our instruction, to find strengths in every individual, and to highlight amazing differences in each child. However, our corporate Creator who made us each unique, but in His image, also calls us to remember that our differences highlight who He is, and the many nuances of His character and His being. How amazing it is to know that though we are all so different, we share the same core of our being – the same identity – which is rooted in and flourishes in Christ, our Savior and Lord. Like our students, Mount Paran Christian School is unique too. We are supported by many who know and appreciate the diversity that exists harmoniously within our school classrooms, hallways, on our athletic fields, and on stage each day. You give of your talent and treasure to perpetuate the advancement of God’s kingdom on earth, right here in Cobb County, Georgia. It is for all of you, our supporters – past and present – that I am grateful. You see our uniqueness, you know our diversity, and alongside us, you celebrate that we have all been created in the image of God. For this and our many other blessings, we can all be truly grateful.

Educating and Celebrating
Multicultural Diversity

The world is ever-changing. With 196 countries on earth, cultures and people-groups are evolving, migrating, melding, and communicating. Even in America, our communities and schools are becoming more culturally diverse, filled with families of many nationalities and ethnic backgrounds. The unique differences and customs of students is something to be celebrated. God sees all of his children as uniquely His and loves them all as written in Galatians 2:28. Mount Paran Christian School celebrates the amazing blessing of God’s diversity in different ways every day. Our largest school-wide cultural event is the International Fair. Members of our school community join together to showcase the many customs and cultures represented throughout our school family. The fair gives students and families a chance to honor their heritage. This year’s program included a variety of cultural performances and 21 families representing countries from Uganda to New Zealand and Albania to Peru. Students and parents alike enjoyed discovering new foods, trying on authentic clothing, and learning about customs from around the world. The event supports the CommUNITY initiative of diversity and inclusion education at all grade levels. At MPCS, we are proud of the increasing diversity of our school and the rich educational opportunities being created. Just this year, MPCS reached 22 percent ethnic diversity among its student body, up from 11 percent just seven years ago. A new partnership has also been formed between the school and the Center for Civil and Human Rights.

Already, our staff and students are benefitting from training and educational opportunities provided by this amazing community resource. We seek to serve and reflect the community around us by improving the socio-economic diversity of MPCS. Financial aid, in its various forms, gifts provided by private donors, and Georgia GOAL contributors have made the dream of a Christian education a reality for more than 164 students at MPCS this year. Though we are a diverse school community, our belief in Jesus Christ unites us all and, by His example, we will seek to love others in all we do. W

John Sess, Director of Operations, said, “He is a man of integrity, a servant-leader and an ambassador for Christ.” In addition to his regular responsibilities, Ronald supports the efforts of Eagle Backers and is one of a very few employees to have received the Servant-Leadership Award from the headmaster. He has been married to his wife, Wanda, for 22 years and together have raised four children.

Caroline graduated from MPCS in 2003. In 2012, she received her Master’s in Educational Leadership from Georgia Southern University. At MPCS, she has served as coach of varsity softball and varsity tennis. MPCS athletic director, Mitch Jordan, commented, “Caroline’s passion for Mount Paran’s athletic program is contagious.” She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Janas and the sister of Melanie Janas Elgin (07). Caroline is married to Josh and they have two sons, Knox and Colt.

The Education Expense Tax Credit is perhaps the most popular tax credit in our state and is having a tremendously positive impact for families throughout Georgia. This includes our own community right here at Mount Paran Christian School. Thanks to the support of 158 MPCS GOAL supporters in 2018, our school was able to secure $362,026 for student financial assistance. These important tax credit dollars provided opportunities to help more than 66 academically qualified, mission-compatible students afford an MPCS education.
PA RT I C I PAT I N G I N T H I S P R O G R A M I S A R A R E O P P O RT U N I T Y Georgia is one of only 18 states that has this type of tax credit scholarship program. In exchange for a contribution, taxpayers receive a 100% state income tax credit! The cap on available tax credits was nearly doubled this year by the Georgia legislature, alleviating the oversubscription problem of past years.
DON’T MISS OUT! To take advantage of a 2019 education expense tax credit, applications must be received by December 31, 2018. Single individuals may apply for any amount up to $1,000 tax credit. Married filing jointly individuals may apply for a tax credit up to $2,500, and individuals with ownership in S-corps, LLCs or partnerships (pass through entities) may apply for any amount up to $10,000 in education tax credits.
