Well we’re off and running, the 2003 race season is officially in gear. We started early this year with Round # 1 of the B/P Promotions State Hare Scramble Series getting underway at the FDMC in early February. I know you guys are ready to ride; close to 300 riders came out in the cold and the muck to do battle on the Dutchmen course. Then we moved indoors to the warm dry course at the 25th Annual Motorama, this is the kick off race for the motocross season here in D-6. Again, another great turnout. After that the Sleepy Hollow opener, if you love the mud Sleepy was the place to be, over 300 riders showed up to brave the elements. Just one week later, you had to see it to believe it, its 70 degrees at Pagoda and they had to water the track to keep the dust down. You gotta love this sport. I’d like to say way to go to all the track owners and their staff that busted their tales getting their facilities ready for us to use this winter. And to all the warriors both male and female alike that came out to race in this stuff, you guys are what keeps this sport alive. MRA is looking forward to another great racing season in 2003, as always say hi to us when you see us at the track. Ride fast and safe and we’ll see you at the races.

FLYING DUTCHMEN HARE SCRAMBLE ROUND # 1 B/P PROMOTIONS - FEBRUARY 2, 2003 Luke comes thru again. February 2, 2003 was the date for round # 1 of the B/P Promotions State Hare Scramble Series hosted by the Flying Dutchmen MC Club. Mother Nature had us in her grips all winter long here in central PA and many were skeptical that the race would be run. Luke told us back in December that he was running the race even if he had to plow the track, and plow the track he did. Then the next question came up, will anybody show up with the cold and wet track conditions? And show up they did, 282 entries on the day. It seems to me that D-6 racers are the real deal, who would have thought that that many riders would come out to race in the middle of winter. Hats off to all the racers and especially to all the members at the Flying Dutchmen MC for putting on a really great show. Jim Bull-MRA

REACTIVE SUSPENSION, INC. By Andy Fleck & Al Carr
The Times They are a Changin’ Like so many times in its history Moto-Cross is undergoing change. Unlike past changes like Reed induction replacing piston port or liquid cooling replacing air cooling I'm talking about 4 strokes replacing 2 strokes. In reality though this isn't so much a change as a case of Moto-Cross coming full circle. Two-stroke engines have been around since almost the inception of the internal combustion engine. But for decades it was considered a cheap, dirty, utilitarian engine mainly used in low cost motorcycles. There were some companies though that believed in the potential of the two-stroke. Most notably an E. German manufacturer, DKW, laid the groundwork for the twostrokes rise to dominance in the racing world. Their work was later continued by MZ after the motorcycle industry in communist E. Germany was nationalized. The research of men like Ernst Degner and Walter Kaaden led to the development of the ex-pansion chamber exhaust system that cured the major problem that plagued the 2 stroke engine since its birth, loss of intake charge into the exhaust system during compression. At some point around 1960 Ernst Degner defected from E. Germany and was quickly hired by Suzuki this led to the Japanese companies rise to prominence in the road racing arena and ultimately Moto-Cross. The rise of two-strokes in Motocross gained speed in the 60's with companies like Husqvarna and CZ.
But their days were numbered as the Japanese juggernaut also gained speed. The seventies proved a wonderful time with dozens of manufacturers building twostroke moto-cross bikes. Does anyone remember Ancilotti, Puch, Tyran, Can-Am, Yankee, Penton, Saracen, AJS, Rokon, Greeves, Jones-Islo, Hodaka, Monark, Montesa, Ossa, Bultaco, SWM, Zundapp and would you believe Harley-Davidson. Man those were the days. Most of these companies were gone by the '80s but 2 strokes remained and were dominating every aspect of motorcycle sport. As the end of the millenium approached a new wind was blowing and Washington wanted it free of the smell of premix exhaust. So a few rules changes from the AMA and here we are today steadily moving to a four-stroke dominated sport. There's no telling what other innovations might have come along to improve the twostroke had we not shown up on the bureaucratic radar, but that's a moot point, four-strokes are here to stay. I for one will miss two strokes. Oh and for all you guys who think the 4 stroke is all that and a bag of chips ask yourself, do you really think anyone would ride one if they didn't have twice the displacement of their two stroke counterparts? See ya at the races.

March 2, 2003 By Trish Krachun
The 2003 GNCC race season started off in Palatka, FL on the first Sunday in March. Many racers really look forward to this race, not only because they are itching to race after a 4-month break, but also because they look forward to getting out of the cold & bitter weather up North. While everyone enjoyed the warm weather on Saturday, the ground conditions left much to be desired. After FL’s 2-week rain periods, it turned this beautiful track into a water-drenched mud & sand pit. As if that wasn’t enough, the soil really had a stench to it too! Due to this, many riders opted not to practice on the Saturday. It’s Sunday, RACE DAY! This year the promoters, along with the Pro & Pro Production racers decided to combine the first row to be a mix of the two classes. The top 20 Pro/Pro Production racers start on the first line & the rest of the Pro & Pro Production racers start on the 2nd line. The racers who start in the 2nd row will have a time adjustment at the end so if they finish less than 1 minute behind anyone who started in the 1st row, they will finish ahead of them overall. This can be really hard for the spectators because no one really knows how they finished until the race is over & posted. As the first row raced off the starting line, it was Bill (Pro Class) & Brandon Balance (Pro Production Class) into the first corner, however Brandon – on his LRD Z400 beat everyone into the woods. When the 2nd row of Pro’s started, it was Mike Krachun on his LRD 400EX who got the holeshot, followed closely by Steve Holbert on his Predator. As the racers came through the checkpoints, the announcer relayed that Bill had surpassed his brother, Brandon Balance for the Overall lead as well as Pro Production racer Chad Duvall who was now in 2nd. During lap 1, Mike Krachun (Production) & William Yokely (Production) dropped out of the race due to mechanical problems. After getting off to a slow start, both Matt Smiley (Pro) & Chris Borich (Pro) moved into 4th & 5th Overall trailing Bill Balance by 38 seconds. Mid-race action saw big battles for the 1&2 spots in the Production class. Chad Duvall & Brandon Balance were duking it out with only 5 seconds between them. In the Pro class, Bill Ballance retained his overall lead with Smiley in 2nd, Chris Jenks in 3rd and Borich falling back to 6th. On the last lap, Bill Balance’s engine started to weaken due to the water & sand getting sucked in to it. As he struggled keep the speed up, his brother Brandon & Chad Duvall thumped past him on their 4-strokes. Smiley had now caught up to Bill & was battling with him when he ran out of gas. At the checkers, it was Brandon Balance with his first overall win (and 2nd for a Pro Production racer – 1st was Chad Duvall), Duvall got 2nd overall & Bill Balance barely made it over the finish line for 3rd. At the end of the day, Brandon only had this to say: "This is the biggest surprise ever, I never expected this to happen. I never got stuck in the mud today". As a result of the horrible track conditions, only * of each of the Pro & Pro Production classes finished the race!
THE GENERAL GNCC, Washington, GA March 8, 2003 By Trish Krachun The 2nd round of the GNCC circuit landed upon the Aonia Pass MX Track in Washington, GA. As with Round 1 in Florida, the track conditions were very muddy & wet due to recent rain falls. However, on race day, there was no rain to be seen which was a relief to many. As the first line of Pro & Pro Production racers took off, it was Bill Ballance on his LRD 250R, once again, in the lead. Brandon Ballance & William Yokely followed in hot pursuit. The top 10 racers, a mix of Pro & Pro Production racers came onto the motocross track at the end of the lap in a freight train. Yokely was in the lead with Chad Duvall & Bill Ballance on his tail. Ballance, literally, flew over Duvall on a big double jump! As they checked into the barrels, it was Yokely, Duvall, Bill Ballance, Greg Trew, Chris Borich, Johnny Gallagher, Matt Smiley, Brad Page, Brandon Ballance & Andy Lagzdins in the top 10 all within 30 sections of 1st! What a battle to see, it was very exciting for all the spectators. In the PRO class, Bill Ballance continued to extend his lead by mid-race, Jeremy Rice motored his way to 2nd, 3rd was Rob Hertz who was battling with Chris Jenks in 4th & Lagzdins moved up to 5th. In the Pro

Production class, Yokely still had the lead & passed Bill Ballance for the overall lead while Ballance was pitting with a flat tire. Duvall was in 2nd, Gallagher moved up to 3rd, Brad Page (who was in the hospital with kidney stones all week prior to the race) moved into 4th & Trew slipped back to 5th. By the end of the race, it was Bill Ballance with the overall win. William Yokely placed 2nd & Johnny Gallagher raced his way to 3rd overall for the first time in 7 years! Pro Production racers have captured 2 of the top 3 overall positions at the first 2 GNCC’s. After the race, Bill Ballance stated: "This track was awesome, there were multiple lines in several places". Yokely agreed by saying "You really had to concentrate and try not to get stuck. I didn’t always see the right line every time and can say that without the spectator’s help in some of those tricky mud holes, I couldn’t have done it today". D-6 racers keep getting plagued by problems. As stated in the FL report, Matt Smiley & Mike Krachun both DNF’d, and also DNF’d GA due to mechanical problems. Tom Hertz also DNF’d FL as well as GA due to mechanical problems. Rob Hertz DNF’d GA as well. Keep your fingers crossed for our D-6 guys in NC!

“Carsten, Plotts, Masters of Motorama” 25th Annual Motorama Arenacross Harrisburg Farm Show Complex
By Jim P. Sanderson
HARRISBURG, PA, FEBRUARY 22, 2003
Bromley Suzuki’s Barry Carsten and RRP/Crossroads Powersports backed Honda thumper pilot, Damien Plotts topped the 125 and 250 Pro/Expert class podiums, respectively, before a packed house at the 25th annual Motorama Indoor Races and Speed Show at the Harrisburg Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Carsten also topped the over 30 expert class podium. Carsten and Plotts battled for the lead for several laps of the 125 Pro/ Expert main event. Plotts actually passed the super fast Carsten on lap six with some help from lapped traffic to take the lead but the veteran Suzuki pilot came back a half a lap later and re-took the lead and held it to the checkered flag. Plotts did all he could on the last lap to get around but couldn’t get it done. Bromley Suzuki’s Barry Carsten (79) leads the start of the 125 Pro/Expert main event at the 25th annual Motorama Indoor Races and Speed Show at the Harrisburg Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Peennsylvania on February 22nd. Trailing were Jeremy Cook (360), Andrew Tsakanikas (707) and RRP/Crossroads Powersports Damien Plotts (46).
Veteran Suzuki pilot Barry Carsten (79) won the 125 Pro/Expert main event at the 25th annual Motorama Indoor Races and Speed Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Carsten also won the over 30 Expert class final and finished fifth in the 250 Pro/Expert final after a no-so-good start.
Plotts ride in the 250 Pro/Expert main event seemed to be a little easier as he came out of the first turn in second trailing veteran Kawasaki pilot, Gaylon Dickson. By the first corner of lap two, Plotts had the point position and held it to the checkers with his only real battle coming from the hard charging Suzuki of Broc Helper very late in the race. Helper managed to work his way up to second from a fifth place start and reduced Plotts lead of three and a half seconds to a bike length by the last lap and just ran out of time.
Michael Bear led the pack out of the first turn in the over 30 Expert class final. In tow were Dickson, Carsten, Jim Mcllvaine and Todd Weindel. The first three laps were a battle for the top three positions with Bear doing a great job of holding off the charges of both Dickson and Carsten. On lap four, Carsten passed Dickson to take second and set after Bear. Carsten made several pass attempts on lap five and finally got around just before the start of lap six. Dickson then passed Bear to take second, dropping Bear to third. Carsten pulled away to a small lead by the end of the race. Carsten got the win with Dickson, Bear, Mcllvaine and Weindel trailing. Carsten, fresh off his over 30 Expert class win, nailed the holeshot of the 125 Pro/Expert main event start. In tow were Jeremy Cook, Andrew Tsakanikas, Plotts and fellow RRP teammate, Ty Wallace. By the third lap, Plotts had worked his way to second, relegating Cook to third with Casey Clark and Helper moving up to fourth and fifth. Plotts made a pass on Carsten for the lead on lap six with the aid of lapped traffic but his lead was short lived as Carsten came back a half a lap later to re-take the point. Plotts dropped back to second. Cook was still third, Helper moved up a spot, to fourth, which relegated Clark to fifth. By lap 10 of the 12 lap final, the top two were unchanged while Helper passed Cook to take third, dropping Cook to fourth and Clark was still holding down fifth. Plotts tried in vain to pass Carsten for the lead on the white flag lap but just couldn’t get it to happen. Carsten held on for the win followed by Plotts, Helper, Cook and Wallace.
Veteran Kawasaki rider, Gaylon Dickson (930) leads the start of the over 30 Expert class final at the 25th annual Motorama Indoor Races and Speed Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Trailing were Michael Bear (914) and Barry Carsten (79).
Dickson, the veteran Kawasaki pilot from Weatherly, Pennsylvania got off the gate ahead of the pack and shot through the first turn with a bike length and half lead. Trailing were Plotts, Clint Johnson, Wallace and Helper. Plotts quickly closed the gap on Dickson and made the pass for the lead by the first turn of lap two, dropping Dickson to second. Cook was now third with Wallace and Helper fourth and fifth, respectively. On the next lap Helper got around Wallace’s booming thumper to take fourth. Wallace was relegated to fifth. Plotts pulled away to a small three second advantage by lap four while the battle for second and third heated up behind him between Cook and Helper as Dickson was |fading a bit and dropped back to fourth. Wallace held fifth but not for long as he managed to get around Dickson on lap five to take fourth. Dickson dropped back another spot, to fifth. When the leaders received the half way signal, Plotts lead was only about two and a half seconds. Helper finally managed to get by Cook to take the runner-up position, which dropped Cook to third. Shortly after Helper passed Cook, Wallace did the same and displaced Cook to fourth with Carsten moving in to fifth place after a bad start.
RRP/Crossraods Powersports Damien Plotts (46) won the 250 Pro/Expert main event and finished second in the 125 Pro/Expert main, taking home a large chunk of the Pro/Expert purse at the 25th annual Motorama Indoor Races and Speed Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on February 22nd.
On lap seven there was a huge pile up of lappers in the first turn which posed a big threat to the leaders who were just a few turns away but all managed to clear the carnage unscathed. Helper closed the gap on Plotts in the remaining laps to just a bike length but simply ran out of time. Plotts took the checkers for the win with Helper, Wallace, Cook and Carsten trailing.
RRP’s resident thumper pilot, Ty Wallace thumperd his way to a 3rd place finish in the 250 Pro/Expert class and 5th in the 125 Pro/Expert class at the 25th annual Motorama Indoor Races and Speed Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Kameron is going into his third full year of racing here in central PA. He is 8 years old and has accomplished many things in his short racing career. Kameron races in local district races as well as some of the big amateur national events around the country. In 2002 he won the track championship at Doublin Gap MX Park in the 50cc Stk 7-8 class and took third in the 65cc 7-9 division. At the Mini O’s in Florida last fall Kameron finished 9th on his 50cc Cobra and is ranked in the top 10 in the country in his age group. More recently at the Motorama Arenacross in Harrisburg, Kameron had a great weekend as well; he had a 1st place finish on Friday night on his 50cc bike and four 2nd place finishes thru out the weekend. Kameron and his dad Jerry would like to thank all of their sponsors that help them pull off a tough racing schedule each season and they asked that we give a huge thank you to Rod and Jeff Yentzer at Doublin Gap MX Park. MRA would like to say way to go Kameron, and we recommend that you keep a close eye on this young man, I think we’ll be seeing his name for many more racing seasons to come.

Toth Brothers, Willy and Garret – Feature Winners at Motorama
The first main event on Saturday night of the 25th Annual Motorama Indoor Races and Speed Show was to feature the 91cc-Open Expert Quad Racers. And what a list of impressive riders showed up to battle it out on the tight indoor course in the Harrisburg Farm Show Arena.
the years but it is always very challenging because of the caliber of riders that show up and also because of the small area that it is located in, especially in the Quad divisions. Passing opportunities aren’t as great on the larger 4 wheel machines as opposed to a two wheel mx bike. On lots of occasions the guy that can get the holeshot can lots of times hold on for the win, and in this particular opening main that is exactly what happened. When the gate dropped Kawasaki mounted John Natilie from Houtzdale, PA grabbed the holeshot and never looked back. Jason Dunkleberger from Lost Creek Cycles was racing in second position and Gil Attix from East Coast ATV was running in third place. The race continued in this order until near the end when #309 Attix experienced some sort of mechanical trouble going into the turn before the big triple jump, this allowed Herrmann Racings Ernie Ehrenzeller to get by him for third overall on the night.
Joey Peter wins the 65c 7-9 Group Some of the names include Attix, Dunkelburger, Diver, Natalie, and the list goes on and on, 6 states were represented with some of the top riders in the country competing. The Motorama course hasn’t changed a lot over
John Natilie riding for Legacy ATV and Rausch Creek MX and ATV Park cruised to the win lapping everyone but the second place rider Jason Dunkleberger.
Another class that is always exciting to watch is the 85 cc 7-11 division. If this is a preview of what is to come in professional motocross racing we better all hold on to our hats. These kids are something else, they’re 5 foot tall and racing lightning fast machines that would make most of us big guys wince if we grabbed a hand full of throttle.

Lattieri Leads 65cc Action
Again the list of names was impressive, and some of these guys already have 5 – 6 years of experience under their belts. Garret Toth riding a Suzuki pulled the holeshot with the #2 rider in the district, Broc Schmelyun right on his rear fender, followed by Frank Lettieri and Marcus Hodge. On the first lap Lettieri and Hodge swapped spots a few times with Lettierri settling into the third place position. By lap number three these four young men started to pull
away from the rest of the pack with an amazing five second lead on the short Motorama course. On lap five Broc Schmelyun passed Garret Toth going thru the whoops but Toth got him right back going into the double while Broc got mixed up in lapped traffic. With time running out it looked like Garret Toth had the win rapped up, but again on this short course with all the traffic, the determined Broc Schmelyun was able to squeak by the # 23t Suzuki to bring home the win on his VPE sponsored Kawasaki. Next up were the mini warriors of the sport, the 50cc oil injected 4-6 year old division. These kids may be small, but they sure do have big hearts and expectations. The class was full as usual and as the gate dropped all 20 riders locked the throttle and pointed their bikes towards the first turn. # 64 Brennen Weindel from Lebanon, PA was the first man there in this go round with # 98 Logan Ehrets and # 911 Jarek Balkovic hot on his tail. By the end of the first lap, local favorite Jarek Balkovic riding the orange KTM sponsored by Yamaha KTM of Camp Hill passed both Weindel and Ehrets for the lead. Meanwhile, further back in the pack #91 Trevor Shaffer was on the move, by lap three the running order was Balkovic, Ehrets and Shaffer with Ehrets pressuring. In the corner going into the big triple jump Ehrets went down and both Shaffer and Weindel slipped by. As I said earlier these young riders have heart, Ehrets was able to re-mount and by the end of the race he had battled his way back to take second place behind Balkovic. Another class of riders to be on the lookout for in the future is the 65cc 7-9 age group, boy can these guys fly. T h e
#911 Jarek Ba Motorama
contenders, Clingerman, Diana, Heilman, Page, Peters, Pisanchyn, Villarreal, there is not room to mention all of the terrific talent in this division, forgive me guys if I didn’t mention your name, you are all very fast.
Racing Technology Engine.
In the 10-11 year old 65cc class we have to give Frank Lettieri a big pat on the back. Frank crashed in the whoops while leading the race, this let the # 1 bike Joey Peters riding the RRP Kawasaki took the hole- of Broc Schmelyun and # 23 Chaz Light slip by. Frank shot with Diana, Villarreal, Page and Sharkey quickly remounted and gave chase without knowing following close behind. On lap two a rider crashed that he had broken his front brake lever clean off of the hard and the red flag went out sending everyone back bar. 4 STROKE ENGINES
By Dave Gibson Question: How long have you been racing your 4 stroke engine without a tear down to inspect both your top and bottom ends ? Here are a few signs that it may be time to take a look. * Loss of power * Excessive smoke when starting * Noisy top end * Timing chain chatter * Head gasket seeping ( high compression motors ) One of the biggest problems we see here at East Coast ATV is the lack of oil changes. We recommend using a good quality 20w 50 weight oil in air cooled engines and 10w 40 in liquid cooled power plants. If you are a cross country racer you should change your oil after every race, if you are a motocrosser and run a 2
moto format you should be good for 2 race weekends. Basically, oil under race conditions is good for about an hour of running time. What we find when we pull a 4 stroke engine apart with irregular oil changes is that in the head assembly, the cams and rockers get warm due to the oil breaking down, the valves get sharp and the valve seats get bent up. Also, after about a year of running time your piston and ring assembly could possibly need to be replaced. Your upper rod end also will show signs of scouring if your oil isn’t kept up with. 400 EX owners here is a tip for you, if you have a high compression piston the stock head studs from the factory are not strong enough under race conditions, they have a tendency to pull out over time causing a leaky head gasket and loss of power. Give us a call at East Coast, we can replace your stock studs with larger units to eliminate that problem. Last but not least , don’t forget about your bottom end. Make sure you check your transmission and clutches for excessive wear. It doesn’t matter how much horsepower you have if your quad won’t go. If you have any questions please give us a call at 215-541-4985.

I’ve waited all winter for this.
Sleepy was the site for the first outdoor MX here in district 6 in 2003. It was also the first event hosted by the new owners, Jere Swarr and his family from Manheim, PA. What a first race, again I give a two thumbs up for the effort put forth in pulling off this event. The snow was removed from the track and pit areas a week prior to the event. The stage was set, two feet of mud and a typical Sleepy opener, cold and windy. The day started out nice, but as the hours slipped away the temperature dropped and the mud kept flying. Again, the warriors came out, 324 entries on the day, man do you guys love to race. A one moto format was run because of the conditions, I believe a great time was had by all. If the opener is any indicator of what we can expect from the Swarr family we can all look forward to a great year of racing at the Hollow.

Sunshine and 60 in Birdsboro, PA. I was sitting at the track Sunday morning looking at all of the mud in the back of my trailer from the week before when the announcer came on the p.a. system and was asking for volunteers to water the track. I couldn’t believe my eyes; the track was in beautiful shape. Reports were that just one week earlier parts of the Pagoda course were still under water. Again the club members worked their butts off getting ready for their season opener. Anybody that stayed home on this particular Sunday just may have missed one of the best racing days of the season. Temps were just right for riding, not too much mud and very little dust, and we were home by supper time. Way to go Pagoda, be sure to check out their MX Practice Day this year. Log on to their web site at www.pagodamotorcycleclub.com for all the details. Jim Bull-MRA
