Well race fans here’s some regrettable news I never imagined that I would have to report. Due to lack of interest and support this will be the last issue of Motorcycle Racing Action that will ever be published. (Please Read On) April Fools !! Gotcha good I bet. I know that’s a pretty sick April Fools joke. I contemplated whether or not I should be so bold, but I thought what the heck, let’s see what happens. I hope you all enjoy reading MRA as much as we enjoy creating it. It is our way of serving the local racing community here in District 6 and the surrounding areas. Our hopes are to continue to bring you “Monthly Amateur Race Coverage” for many years to come. The truth is though, that the above paragraph could really appear in these pages at any given time. There are so many of you that have been 110% supportive of what we do since the day we took over. I know time flies and it can be easy to forget, just two short years ago MRA was a 12 page newsletter with two pictures per page. It was a great publication; it just didn’t have the content that we do today. We ask that if you can support us thru a subscription, please do. That if you are a business owner or know someone that is, purchase or recommend purchasing an ad to support the sport we all love. That you as a reader do business with the advertisers in the pages of MRA. Please remember, when you head to a race or practice track or when you purchase parts or service for your bike or quad, the companies and promoters that advertise in these pages are the ones that really support your sport. Even if you can’t spend any money with them at the time, tell them you saw their ad in MRA and thank them for what they do. Many times there are money saving offers in MRA, read closely and take advantage. Let the people know that MRA is something they would enjoy reading. I know the kids love it when they open the pages and see their pictures there, and without them this sport has no future. We sincerely thank all of you; MRA is strong because of you. Let’s all pull together and keep it that way so we never have to hang that sign in the window, “Closed!”.

HOLESHOT HOTSHOT

1

Experience: Racing 6 years

Class: 85cc 7-11 Sponsors: W.E.R., Rizzon Cycle, Metro Clothing, Spectro Oil, RRP, AGV Helmets Youth racer Dale “Bugsy” Wakefield is our Harescramble Hotshot to kick off the 2004 off road season here in the district. Bugsy had a terrific season in 2003 taking the D-6 Championship as well as the track championship at Flying Dutchmen and the number one plate in the BP Promotions PA State Hare Scramble Series all in the 85cc 7-11 division. Bugsy is riding the # 1 Suzuki out of Rizzon Cycles in 2004 and he has picked up right where he left off last season. On a frigid icy day in early February he brought home the checkers in the season opening round one of the BP State Series at the Flying Dutchmen. Watch out for this young hotshot in the years to come, I believe he’ll be ready for the expert division long before they’re ready for him. Watch out next month, you may be the next MRA Hotshot. Rider: Chase Miller Hometown: York, PA Bike: Cobra Age: 6 yrs. District#: 02 Experience: 2 years

Class: 4-6 oil, 4-6 stock Sponsors: Kincaid Racing, Bubbas Breakaway, Mackenzie & Hunter, Mom & Dad Kincaid sponsored Chase Miller from York, PA is our Holeshot Hotshot to kick off the race season for 2004. Chase is coming off an excellent race season in 2003 that was hampered by a broken leg mid way thru the year. Chase did come back at the end of the year to compete in a few events, and he showed up at this years Motorama Indoor Races ready for business. Chase was pulling holeshots all weekend long and went home with a first, 2 seconds, and a third place finish. Watch for Chase this year at all the local tracks, I believe he‚ll be right there at the top of the heap when it’s all said and done. Late breaking news, as we were going to deadline we found out that Chase competed at Budds Creek in the Loretta Lynn Area Qualifier and won his class. This allows him to compete at the Regional later in the year and he could very well be on his way to the Amateur Nationals. Way to go Chase !!! Watch out next month, you may be the next MRA Holeshot Hotshot. Jim Bull

Febuary 8, 2004 Pine Grove, PA

The PA State Harescramble series kicked off its 2004 season at the Flying Dutchmen in Pine Grove Pennsylvania. Another great year of ATV racing is under way. BP promotions has lined up yet another awesome schedule of events with ten races planned from February to October. A few changes were made over the winter including the combining of two and four stroke classes. Racers now have there choice of three Overall & Expert Class Winner Chris Borich experience levels C, B, and A and all classes are listed as Open displacement. They have also combined the 0-230cc class with the 300cc four stroke class. Several riders did well enough in the points race last year to be advanced to the next class, which will add to the excitement in 2004. The opener this year was cold, wet and icy. As I arrived at the track it was obvious that this was going to be a tough race to finish. The track was covered with frozen puddles and the areas that were dry were extremely hard packed. As the mini quads and dirtbikes raced the sun slowly warmed the ground and by race time it was a balmy 20 degrees! The open areas and straight aways were beginning to thaw but the shaded areas were like a skating rink. Studs were allowed this year for this race only and a good number of racers choose to use them. I made a poor decision and opted to race without studs which proved to be a mistake. In the pits prior to the race mechanics and racers could be seen scrambling around their machines using a cordless drill to install their studs. The usual crowd was on hand, but as I walked the pits in the morning I noticed many Lots of mud & snow, but happy to be racing again. new faces. The riders made

there way to the starting area, bundled up in thermals and snow suits. The field lined up with the Open A class in the front row. Chris Borich (National #2) was ready to tear it up along with Tyson Thomas, Mike Lucas, Todd Rothermel, Sean Niedlinger, Jon Bowers, and many more. Up and comer Jared McClure was ready to try out the A class after dominating the amateur ranks in 2003. We used a dead engine on the machine start this race similar to the GNCC style of starting. Tyson Thomas got off the line first and took the lead. A few miles into the race Jon Bowers started to pressure Thomas for the lead. The freezing temperatures and wet conditions were very challenging but Bowers seemed to be prepared. He rocketed into the lead before the close of lap one followed by McClure and Borich. At the completion of lap one most of the pack stopped for dry gloves and fresh goggles or to simply get some feeling back in the hands. As the race progressed Chris Borich proved why he is the reining PA State Champion and #2 in the nation. He put his ECATV Yamaha YFZ 450 minutes ahead of the rest of the field and simply rode away. As the laps wore down I found myself getting more comfortable and more importantly I was able to stay dry and warm. With two to go I was able to get around McClure for the third spot, and put my sites on Bowers for the second spot. Unfortunately for me, Bowers was feeling rather comfortable as well and never allowed me to get close enough to make a move. Jarred McClure ended up in fourth place with Mike Lucas rounding out the top five in the A class.

In the Open B class it was Steele, Adams and Baker taking the top three positions. Monnett, Palmer and Doyle finished first through third in the Open C class. In the Vet class it was McBride, Bianatt and Correll with 2003 class champion Chad Kirby finishing 5th. In the 0-300 class Bergey took the win. Tim Olsen finished second on his 300EX, this was Tims third race ever, he says he's hooked and plans to compete in the entire series. I would like to personally congratulate everyone who finished this event. This race was terribly grueling, bitter cold, and wet. Many people pulled off after only Story By: Jason & Jacob Hughes one lap, others never made it that far. The shaded areas in the pines were so icy, that with out studs, if you lost momentum the quad would just sit still and some riders needed to get off and push. The staff at FDMC did an outstanding job as usual. The attendance was amazing considering the conditions which I believe is a sign of the direction this sport is heading. I'm looking forward to getting the regular season rolling, getting back to the dirt and putting the ice and snow behind us. See you at the track!

Lake Whitney drew close to 3500 riders this year and is the first big event of the year on the amateur tour. In Nicks class alone , the 65cc 7-9 modified division there were over 90 riders, yes 90 riders from all over the country. Nicks the man, he beat them all, every single last one of them. In the 65cc 7-9 stock ranks there were over 100 entries, Nick won his heat race but unfortunately ran into some mechanical trouble and had a DNS in one of his motos, who knows what might have happened. Way to go Nick on a job well done. Nick started riding when he was three years old on a Yamaha PW50 set up with training wheels. It looks like all that experience paid off big time this spring. Watch out for Nick, he‚s not stopping there. He won both of his motos in the first round of the N.E. Classic at Doublin Gap and he has his sights set on a National Championship at Loretta Lynns in August. Nick, again way to go and thanks for the time you gave us for this interview. We wish you a great and safe season. Jim Bull MRA

Stretching: How Important Is It? By: Bob Schuler – Total Two Wheel Training Did you know that most injuries happen in practice in MX and in many other sports because most do not warm up and stretch properly? Ask yourself, if you get to the track and get all your gear set up and think, what do I do next, the best thing you could do is go out and walk the track at a brisk pace and get a sweat going or if you are like Bob Hannah you could go out and run the track before practice to get a good warm up and get your body ready for the day to come. The other thing you can do is bring a jump rope along and spend some time doing that and this will also loosen you up and get your heart rate going. Stretching is also very important after you get a sweat going to help prevent injury and it is also good for helping you focus when you are more relaxed. With increased flexibility, the occurrence of over use injuries decreases. If stretching is not part of your morning routine, muscles will become tighter causing excess strains on the tendons, resulting in tendonitis, torn muscles and over stress to the joints. When you ride or exercise, muscle fibers are torn as a result of the stress placed on them, this is where the soreness comes from. These tears are generally so minute that they are nothing to worry about, but when healing occurs scar tissue develops which is like elastic. This build up of scar tissue causes the muscle to get tighter, less flexible and more prone to injury. Stretching should be a part of any work out program, whether its weight training or aerobic conditioning. A good stretching program should consist of a five minute warm up before you stretch to allow for better blood flow to all muscle groups and increased temperature of muscle. The stretching should be done from head to toe and fifteen minutes in length. When stretching, it should be gentle and not painful. It should be slow and controlled, not bouncing to the point where you feel a good stretch and can hold it for 20-30 seconds. Each stretch should be performed three times to reach maximum benefits. Don’t hold your breath during the stretch, always breathe normally and try to relax and get your mind only thinking about how you’re going to ride for the day and how loose you will be to just let the bike dance around under you. Keep your eyes open for me at the races and if there is any thing I can help you with let me know, I can run you through a good routine that should really help your riding. Happy Moto to you all and see you soon at the races.

Season Opener: Doublin Gap Motocross Park NEWBURG, PA, MARCH 7 – Story and Photos by Jim Bull, MRA

Over 400 motocross racers from AMA District 6 and AMA District 7 converged on the Doublin Gap Motocross Park in Newburg, Pennsylvania on the first Sunday in March for their 2004 season opener. The skies were bright blue with spring like temperatures and as usual the Yentzer Family had their racetrack in superb condition for the days event. Pro class racer RRP-Cycle Stuff/ MSR/ Rays Yamaha/ Crossroad Powersports Ty Wallace was on hand to showcase his talents in three expert divisions. Wallace was pulling holeshots and winning motos all day long. There were many who challenged but at the end of the day Wallace took home the money in the 25+A, 125A and 250A divisions. The big race of the day was in the mini ranks in the 85cc 12-13 group. In moto number one Kawasaki mounted Colton Harrison pulled #1 Colton Harrison battles #70 Dan Holton in the 85cc 12-13 Division the holeshot followed closely by Cernics Suzuki/ FMF/ PR2/ 909/ Michelin rider Daniel Holton Jr. and VPE/ Scott/ Liquid Performance/ Riders Edge Yamaha ace Broc Schmelyun. Both Holton and Schmelyun quickly passed Harrison thru the first series of corners and by the halfway point of lap one these two young pilots were moving into the 14-15 year old riders that left on the early gate ahead of them. By the end of the first lap Schmelyun had worked his way past Holton and was picking off the older riders one by one, by lap three both Schmelyun and Holton had worked their way past all but the top rider in the 14-15 group. On the final lap of the moto Holton managed to squeeze by Schmelyun for the win. Moto number two would prove to be just as exciting with Holton grabbing the holeshot this time and yes, Schmelyun right on his heels. Again these two future stars ran into traffic on the first lap and Holton grabbed the advantage and started to pull away. When the two came out of the bottom section of the course on lap number two Schmelyun had somehow worked his way passed Holton and the battle was on. The two raced tire to tire for the remainder of the #2 Broc Schmelyun leads the Junior minis thru th first turn race and at the checkers it was Schmelyun by a bike length for the overall. Schmelyun would go on to take the win in the Junior Mini 9-13 division as well, a double win at Doublin Gap in the season opener. Holton would go on to take the overall win in the Super Mini Division later in the day. Keep your eyes on these two youth veterans, I am sure they both have a bright future ahead of them in this great sport. For complete event photos go to www.mcracingaction.com and be sure to check out Doublin Gaps Yamaha All Star National in early June and they‚ll also play host to the Northeast Amateur Regional on June 26-27, 2004. You can view their complete schedule at www.doublingap.com.

MRA would like to feature the Toth brothers, Willy and Garret from Carlisle, PA. Both of these fine young racers deserve their own interview so I apologize guys, I just thought it would be cool to keep it all in the family. Both Willy and Garret are exceptional people on and off the track, whenever I talk to one or the other at the races they always are very polite and humble. Whenever I watch them on the track they appear to be giving it their all and it shows in their results. Racing must be in the blood, their father Bill is the president of the Happy Ramblers MC in Hanover, PA and their mom Michelle is always helping out at the tracks around the district. Stop by their Suzuki Dealership sometime in Mechanicsburg, West Shore Suzuki and you’ll see the guys accomplishments. The shop is wall papered in plaques and awards that both Willy and Garret have won over the years,

thank all of the Toth Family for this interview and for what they give to the sport of motocross, if you see them at the races do MRA a favor and take the time to thank them too. – Jim Bull

Thor Parts Unlimited N.E. Classic

March 21, 2004 Round # 1 At Doublin Gap MX Park, Newburg, PA. I was traveling into the college town of Shippensburg, PA on a cold Sunday morning in March when it started. The snow began to fall when I was just minutes from my destination, I was hoping that this would not be the start of another late season snowstorm here in South Central PA. Just days before mother nature had dumped another four inches of the white stuff on our venue for the weekend and the night before the event when the Yentzers thought everthing was under control – Bam, a half inch of rain fell. The weather had caused Jeff and Rod Yentzer to cancel their warm up race scheduled for Saturday in hopes of better preparing their track for Round # 1 of the Thor Parts Unlimited Northeast Classic. The Classic draws thousands of riders each year to its five race series offering close to a quarter million dollars in contingencies and product giveaways. I’ll say this, given everything the crew at Doublin Gap had thrown at them in the days prior to this event, they did an excellent job and the track was in tip top condition. Special thanks goes out to Chris and Tim Kinsley with Kinsley Construction from York, Pa. The Kinsleys got right all the ball and got extra earth moving equipment out to the track when the snow storm hit, this enabled the staff out at Doublin to get the job done. I’d also like to give credit to all the racers and their families that came out to participate in this event. Not knowing what kind of track conditions Honda Pilot #216 Scott Sears from Arish, NY sweeps the college boy and 250B classes winning all four of his motos.

they would find, let alone putting up with the cold and the wind. The racers from the North East region of the country are true competitors, man it was cold and you all deserve the credit for getting this thing pulled off. Without you there is no race. The racing was hot as usual here in Districts 6 and 7. Some of the top experts from the area were on hand to showcase their talents. I keep finding myself saying this name over and over again already this year, and things are just getting started. The # 161 of Casey Clark with an American Suzuki ride out of Lebanon Valley Cycles and co-sponsored by Keeney Motosports established himself as the man to beat. Seasoned veteran Barry Carsten With both Damien Plotts and Jeremy Cook on the familiar Bromleys Suzuki sidelined with injuries early this season, Clark has wins the Vet A division. things pretty well under control. Not that the competition wasn’t there. RRP racer Ty Wallace was on hand as well as the likes of Barry Carsten and Kevin Crine, Stephen Stella and Kevin Brodsky, Doublin Gaps own Jeff Yentzer and up and comer first year expert Andrew Wiegand. Wow, no free rides here, Clark won all four expert motos in convincing fashion. I believe Suzuki made a wise choice when putting the bright yellow machines in this guys trailer. In the Vet A class Barry Carsten takes home the Round 1 win and Kevin Crine grabs the gold in the 25+ A division. Ken Messerman from Lewistown, PA. cops the win in the Senior ranks. Now we jump to the future expert riders com- Dave Marques from Hasbrouck Heights NJ is your 25+ B champipeting in the mini divisions, it’s gonna get good on finishing 3-1 respectively. folks, just you wait and see. In the 50cc ranks both Chase Miller, another name that’s been popping up a lot this year and Jarek Balkovic won their respective classes. Nick Desiderio was on hand coming off a first place win at Lake Whitney Texas to claim the 65cc 7-9 division, and Dylan Brakovich took the wins in both the 65cc 10-11 and 85cc 7-11 classes. Then there’s the likes of Lowell Spangler, Dan Holton Jr. and Broc Schmelyun. I recommend to some of you older expert riders hurry up and accomplish what you have set out to do, when these guys get a few years older, look out. Kawasaki racer Donnie Butcher riding out of Strouds Motorsports grabbed the overall in the School Boy class and another Kawasaki pilot, Matt Hougentogler of Cumberland Kawasaki took the win in the 125 C Division. Again, a big way to go the racers, to the staff at the track and the people that help sponsor this event. Pagoda Opener A Big Success

Photos and Story by Ed Fratoni of MOTOXSTATION.COM Race action started with the first gate dropping at 11:00 am and finishing up under cloudy skies at 4:00 pm. Here’s what I remember: The Supermini 12-15 gated first ahead of the Junior Mini. Joe Keefe #348 of Little Meadows, PA put his Suzuki into the lead position going into the downhill in both motos. Honda pilot, Randy Saxenmeyer was in second with Gap Racing’s Ryan Sebastian #20R in third follwed by Jason Smith #84, Nick McPhee #214 and Justin Frederick #32F and the pack. Sebastian sliced his way into first ahead of Keefe toward the end of the first lap on the downhill toward the finish line. The Supermini order of Sebastian, Keefe and Smith continued into the fourth and final lap with the Gap racer holding onto a two second lead with third place only seven seconds behind him followed by McPhee in fourth. The group would finish about the same with Honda rider #27A Saxenmeyer filling out the top five position. The second moto of the Supermini yielded better results for Keefe as he had the holeshot and lead to the checkers. Sebastian went 1-2 for second followed by Jason Smith in third place. The Junior Mini holeshot went to Kawasaki mount Rich Kastle #3 from Gilbertsville, Pa. who led into the second lap as the group of Kastle, Dave Sparr #360 and Jushua Gotthall #91G encountered the tail end of the Supermini riders. All Aboard The Valve Train

Reactive Suspension By Andy Fleck & Al Carr

www.reactive-suspension.com With the advent of four strokes comes some added complications in the maintenance aspects of owning one. The four stroke engine has significantly more moving parts than its predecessor the two stroke and the valve train components require periodic adjustments. More than likely if you have looked through your service manual you may have thought the valve adjustment procedure a daunting task and for someone without the tools or experience it can be. The cylinder head on a four stroke contains the intake and exhaust valves, valve springs and camshaft(s). The camshaft(s) is/are connected to the crankshaft via a chain and sprocket arrangement. The sprocket on the camshaft is twice as large as the sprocket on the crank as a result the crankshaft has to turn twice for each single revolution of the cam this is due to the four distinctive strokes the piston must perform to achieve one power stroke These four strokes are Intake, Compression, Power and Exhaust. Lets start with the piston at Top Dead Centre (TDC) on the Intake stroke, as it moves downward the increasing volume in the cylinder creates a low pressure area. Airs natural propensity is to always move from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure therefore the air in the airbox will naturally move toward the cylinder. Along the way it will pickup some fuel in the carb and find its way into the cylinder past the intake valves which were actually already open before the piston had reached TDC. The intake valves will not close until some point after Bottom Dead Centre (BDC) since the intake charge will still be entering the cylinder due to inertia generated by it's high speed movement. After the intake valves close, the piston will begin the Compression stroke. As the pressure rises so does the temperature and at a point pre-determined in the ignition mapping relative to engine speed and throttle position a spark will occur to initiate ignition. The spark actually fires before the piston gets to TDC this is done because the burn takes place slowly at first, the idea is to catch the fastest part of the burn just after TDC which will result in the greatest amount of energy being exerted on the piston and generating the Power stroke. Before the piston again reaches BDC the exhaust valves will begin to open, the reason for this is that expanding gases have inertia and we can use that to help begin the venting of exhaust gases as early as possible. Now, the piston passes BDC and begins to rise, we have a low pressure area at the exhaust valve which is currently helping with the removal of the spent gasses and before the exhaust valves close the intake valves will start to open. The low pressure being generated by the venting of exhaust gases will help begin the intake process again The opening and closing of the valves is performed by the camshaft. In the CRF engines one cam opens both the intake and exhaust (Unicam) in the YZF there is a separate cam for the intake and the exhaust valves (Double Overhead Cam) Camshafts are described based on their lift and duration. Lift is the measured amount in inches the valve opens and duration is the time the valve remains open measured in degrees of crankshaft rotation. The eccentrically shaped lobes on the camshaft are what determine lift and duration. As the camshaft rotates it basically pushes the valves open and then eases them back down onto their seats. When the valve clearances are incorrect then the point at which the valves open and close are incorrect and will result in reduced performance. The '02 '03 CRF 450 was notorious for it's valves tightening up which resulted in very hard starting and poor performance, the cause was the titanium valves wearing down into the valve seats the cure was replacing the valves with stainless steel ones. The YZF and I imagine the new RMZ and KXF all use what is called a shim under bucket arrangement. The CRF uses this et up on the intake valves only. This set up eliminates some moving parts and is much more suitable for a high revving engine. The shim sits directly atop the valve stem and is covered by what looks like a bucket, this bucket sits against the shim and covers the top part of the valve spring. The lowest part of the cam lobe is called the base circle and in a properly adjusted engine it should not contact the shim bucket. This is the point at which we measure our valve clearances. With the engine cool we must first find TDC on the compression stroke. We do this because when the piston is in this position none of the valves are open and the base circles are directly above the valves. The ignition flywheel has some distinctive markings to help us find this point. On the ignition cover are two slotted caps. Remove both. The one in the centre accesses the bolt or nut that retains the flywheel, by putting a socket and ratchet on this we can rotate the engine until the required mark becomes visible in the other opening. Generally TDC is identified by a T mark on the flywheel and is also close to an F mark which is the engines firing point and used when checking ignition function. With the T mark in the window and lined up with a notch visible at the edge of the window the flywheel should feel free almost wobbly, if it doesn't but rather feels like there is resistance when turning it then you are at TDC at the end of the exhaust stroke, rotate it one more time. We can now remove the valve cover and expose the camshafts. Check your manual for the required clearances on the intake and exhaust they will be different due to the variation in operating temperatures between the hotter exhaust valves and the cooler intake valves. Now slip a feeler gauge of the correct size between the cam lobes base circle and the shim bucket, if you can't fit it in then try a thinner gauge until you can or consequently if it slips in easily try a thicker one until it slips in with minor resistance, record each number and the corresponding valve. If all the measurements fall within the range spec'd out in your manual then re-install the valve cover and celebrate your good fortune. If they are out of spec well here's what you do,

Maryland is home to many great motocross riders, most notably that of Travis Pastrana. The list continues with Nick Evennou, Kevin Crine, Tim Schmelyun and minicycle hero Randy Jones. Tony DiStefano, the 1975, 76 & 77 AMA 250cc Champion has setup shop for his Tony D’s Motocross school in the District 7 State as well. There are many young and talented riders working their way to the top of the sport from that region and one in particular that I want you to know about, his name is William “Gregg Duffy”. I had the opportunity to talk to Gregg at Delaware’s newest motocross facility called Blue Diamond Park designed by Gary Bailey and fast becoming a popular stop along the East Coast. Gregg was warming up for the upcoming Spring Nationals and honing his skills for another sweep of the Amateur AX series at Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. Gregg Duffy’s impressive resume is growing at a fast pace. In 2003, Gregg was World Arenacross Champion with a 1st in both the 85cc 12-15 and the Supermini classes. Gregg placed 4th in the 85cc 14-15 Olympiad at the Mini-O’s and a 4th place at the Suzuki RM Cup in Washougal, Washington. Despite his 10th & 13th place finishes at a soggy Loretta Lynn’s Amateur National, Gregg continues to excel at arenacross with his 1st place wins in Raleigh, NC., Hampton, VA., Albany, NY, Baltimore, MD., and Wilkes-Barre, PA. Gregg is determined to display his skills and be a front runner in the motocross community and has started the 2004 season off with a 1st place win in both the Supermini & Schoolboy classes at Elizabeth City Motocross in North Carolina at the Mid Atlantic Winter Series. In my discussion I found out that his sister Amanda has special abilities and competes in her own activities at the National level. Gregg Duffy is a polite and levelheaded young man who will go far in representing his sponsors and displaying a positive image of the sport. Gregg Duffy is another grassroots racer developing championship skills. Keep your eye on the #150 plate and check out his website maintained by his #1 fan and uncle, Kevin Duffy at www. duffnstuff.com EF: Gregg, I see that your name is listed as William Duffy on the entry & results listing. Tell me what you prefer to be called. GD: Gregg with two “G’s” ….William Gregg Duffy but I prefer going with my middle name, Gregg. EF: When is your birthday? GD: April 27, 1989 EF: Where do you live? GD: Churchton, MD.

EF: Who are your current sponsors?

GD: Pr2, O’Neal, JT Motorsports, Silcolene, Empire Graphics, Turbo Blue, Twin Air, Boyesen, Liquid Performance, HRP, HJC, Excel, Michelin, EVS, Mx Bonz, Renthal, Smith, FMF, Mom & Dad and anyone I might have forgotten. EF: I see you have a PR2 motor and suspension. How did your relationship with Pr2 come about? GD: They have great motors and awesome suspensions. It was at Budds Creek when I had my engine blow up and I had to find a motor. Jeff Pienhart had a motor in his box van that he lent to us and we loved it. EF: Tell me a little bit about your Loretta Lynn’s performance last year. I know a lot of qualifiers, regionals and the event itself was marred by rain and muddy conditions. How did you fare? GD: Not to bad. I had problems in the turns and stuff…I kept on sliding out and going down but I kind of liked the mud…it was fun. EF: Gregg with your success on the arenacross circuit and exposure at the amateur Nationals you have been defining your reputation as a true competitor both in the region and nationally. Have you been approached by American Suzuki or Cole Gress about sponsorship? GD: Yes, we tried to get Suzuki sponsorship last year but I didn’t do well at the nationals however we hope to do better this year. EF: Your father tells me that your mom helps out your sister Amanda and doesn’t make your races. What role has your family played in your young career? GD: My mom isn’t at the races much but helps out as much as she can…she’s great. My dad works on the bikes and helps me load them up and works everyday… all day. EF: How does school fit into your schedule? GD: I go to Southern High School and I’m in the 9th grade. School’s going pretty good but I got a few bad grades in Math and US Government. I’m working hard. EF: What Professional Rider do you most admire? GD: I’d probably have to say Travis, because he’s been through a lot in his life and still rolls out. EF: Do you have a favorite track? GD: I like Blue Diamond. I go there every Sunday. EF: Favorite food? GD: Pasta EF: Favorite Movie? GD: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back EF: Do you have any other hobbies? GD: …umm…I skateboard a little but that’s it.

EF: Thanks for taking the time and letting us know a little more about you and I wish you success in the upcoming season. GD: Ok, Thanks a lot for everything.

Note: Gregg Duffy is temporarily sidelined with a broken leg & collarbone that he acquired squeezing in another practice at The Landings prior to his trip. Gregg will be back in action soon

EF: Your Age? GD: Fourteen. EF: What classes to you race? GD: 85cc 14-15, Supermini and Schoolboy EF: How did you get started in the sport? GD: My dad use to race and I would always go with him to watch. I got tired of watching and asked my dad for a Honda MR50. I got an old MR50 for my first bike. EF: At what age did you start racing? GD: I think I was about 7 or 8 years old when I first started. EF: Your well on your way to a successful career. Last year you placed 1st in the World Arenacross Finals in Las Vegas, Nevada. What classes were they? GD: I won the 85cc 12-15 and Supermini classes. EF: The 2004 season is upon us. What is your projected schedule look like? GD: I’ll definitely be doing the Loretta Lynn qualifiers, regionals, Lake Whitney, Mini-O’s and perhaps a few more big events. EF: Where do you practice? GD: Sometimes I go to Blue Diamond and do a little riding there and also at The Landings MX Track. ( The Landings MX Track in MD. is where Honda filmed their new commercials) EF: What is the closest track to your home? GD: The Landings. EF: Whom do you consider your immediate competition? GD: …umm…Ryan Villipoto is a great rider and Mike Picone. Ricky Renner but I think he moved up to the 125 class.

The Flying Dutchmen March 14, 2004

By Jason and Jacob Hughes It looks like winters over for now. The track was perfect, the weather was warm and more surprisingly the track had dried out. There were a few normal puddles around the property but nothing like in previous years. I might risk saying this was the best we'd seen this track in years. Attendance was awesome, which of course led to parking issues, but this is a good sign of things to come. The new class structure has raised the level of excitement around the pits. It seems more people are getting serious about competing and being at every event. Gathering valuable points at every round and earning a place at the awards banquet is a mutual goal all racers share. This was the second of over thirty District 6 Harescramble events scheduled for the 2004 season. Racers were blessed with clear skies and a dry track, something the Dutchmen is not known for. I took a walk through the pits in the morning and noticed a growing number of new Honda 450R's. One 450R in particular was wearing the popular #2 of Sunbury Pa.'s Chris Borich. His ride was hopped up with a Curtis Sparks pipe and Hiper wheels. Another GNCC Pro racer Rob Hertz of Brookhaven PA. was testing out his 450R with Hiper wheels and sporting an HMF exhaust pipe. In the starting area the Open A class was lined up first with 16 riders. The combination of the two and fourstroke classes has made the A class very interesting. Borich was there on his 450R, Hertz on his 450R, Jon Bowers (Bowers Motorsports) on his YFZ450, Mike Lucas was on his Banshee, Wes Stone was on his Pro-Parts Roll Design R, Mark Walters was ready to go on his Laeger 250R, John Kenney had his 400EX ready for his A class debut along with his sister Steph on here highly modded 300EX. This is what Open class is all about, 16 racers, six different types of machines and all battling for the same spot. The B and C classes are also Open classes and allow all different machine sizes and strokes. After a short riders meeting the track was cleared and racer were ready to go. It was a dead engine, on the bike start. The starters arm went up and the horn sounded as 16 of the areas best ATV racers battled to see who would lead the first lap. To my surprise I was able to hang on to throttle the longest and I managed to put my ECATV/ Dubach/Powerline YFZ450 out in front of the pack. As we made our way through the MX portion of the track Wes Stone, Rob Hertz and Jon Bowers gave chase. As I made my way from the MX portion to the back section the track officials waved us down and we were instructed to go back to the starting area. Unfortunately during the start of the Open B class Blake Kramer got his 250R upside down and was knocked out on the track in the first turn. Track officials were unsure as to the severity of the injuries so they decided to stop the event and restart. After a short while Kramer was on his feet and was able to walk off the track under his own power. Blake is a tough competitor and I'm sure we'll see him out here again soon, showing these guys how to do it! After a short break we the race was underway again. This time it was the Borich and Hertz show start to finish. Several racers were left sitting on the line after a quick restart, myself included, and needed to work there way from the back of the field. Borich and Hertz seemed to be holding it wide open for the entire hour and a half race. Borich was able to stay within sight of Hertz until a flat tire forced him to pit. #45 Rod Hertz was not holding anything back and walked away with the win. Jarred McLure held onto third most of the race until Mark Walters and Wes Stone caught up after bad starts. At the end it was Hertz, Borich, Mark Walters, Wes Stone and McLure. In the B class Craig Sullivan, Kieth Applebee and Joshua Crone did a great job trying to hold of Feb 8th's B class winner Richard Steele. Steele who pilots a Honda 400EX has his sights set on winning a few more this year. With the large classes this year consistency will be the key to winning the championship. Kyle Knecht rounded out the top 5 in the B class. The Vet class had some great racing action this week. Joe Borich lined up the old #4 that Chris Borich used to win two GNCC races with in 2003. Joe is always a great competitor when he decides to race. Joe went on to take the win followed by last years points champion Chad Kirby. Third place went to Ken Tichner of Pottstown Pa. on his 450R. Brian Shimkanon and R. Correll rounded out the top five positions. 0-230 & 300 fourstroke: Lonnie Garland John Cunningham Trevor Stout Jim Kuperavage Brandon Romito
