Hello Race Fans!

Hey everybody and welcome back. I’m sure there are a few of you that have been wondering when your new MRA was going to come. Never fear, we are back to printing every month, now thru December. We combine a few months over the winter just because of the lack of activity in the region. I thought about possibly pulling some sick “April Fools” joke by telling you we were throwing in the towel and this will be the last MRA you’ll ever get. Anyhow, I’m not that mean and thats certainley not going to happen so, never mind. Well the season started off with a bang at the Motorama Indoor Races and Shows. The racing action was red hot and the spectator attendance was huge. Maybe they’ll make that place bigger some year so they can fit everybody in. From there we went to Doublin Gap for the outdoor opener. What a great treat that was, beautiful spring weather and an awesome new track design. It seems that 2006 is the year of the track. Several promoters from around the area have either built completely new tracks or they have redesigned their current layout. Either way it’s good for us. As usual, watch for MRA at all of your favorite events. We have ramped up the issue this year so we can offer you more coverage and to bring you a more appealing look. Do you like the color? We’ll try to do

as much of it as we can. Please if you can, when you support one of our advertisers, wether it’s your first visit to their facility or even if you have been dealing with them for years tell them you saw their ad in MRA. It goes a long way and it helps them to want to continue to support the sport. Remember to watch our website for weekly updates and to check out your race photos each week. Most events are usually posted by Monday noon following the event. And new this year to MRA and coming soon. Video race coverage by Trevor Bull. He will be at many events doing random footage, who knows, maybe he’ll catch you in action. He will also be offering custom video for you to purchase to help attract sponsors and to share with friends and family. Lets face it, the day of the paper resume is over. Potential sponsors want to see you in action. Contact us to get all of the details on how you can get your custom video from Trevor. Well, that’s about it for now. Keep the rubber side down and we’ll see you at the track.

Until next time.

TIRES VET CLASS HOTSHOT Name: Keith Gilliam Event: Doublin Gap Season Opener Age: 39 Hometown: Thurmont, MD District #: 218 Ride: KTM450SX Class: Vet C Experience: Riding a long time, 2nd year racing. Hobbies: Going Racing With My family Fav. Food: Pizza Fav. Racer: Ricky Carmichael or Valentino Rossi Sponsors: Summit Construction, Blettner Powersports, Family and Friends. Future goals: To have fun and keep my son racing. Well we thought we would try something different this month. We love to recognize the kids and feature them for doing well. But you know what? At the heart of every Holeshot Hotshot there is usually a strong parental figure and many times that parent or sometimes even both parents are racers themselves. So we thought we would step up to the plate this issue and feature a Vet Class Hotshot. Last year while covering the MDRA Series we met a really cool family from Thurmont, MD. We featured their youngest son Cory as a MDRA Hotshot for the way he had improved in such a short period of time. Last year Cory started out on a 50cc bike and he has progressed to the 65’s and has now even started to ride an 85cc bike. Like any really cool father would, his dad Keith decided that he was going to go racing with his son. Now Keith, he used to ride dirt bikes back in the day, and he’s been riding street bikes all his life but it’s been close to 20 years since he’s been on a dirt bike. And he’d never ridden anything like the big orange KTM that he decided to start his stretch for glory on. Keith got geared up and started riding the Vet C class last season. He held his own and had a few decent finishes. This winter he decided he was really going to go for it and he started working out and eating right. Keith showed up at the Doublin Gap opener and rode his best and he creamed the competition in his first moto of the day. Wow he thought, my first win ever. Well this boosted Keith’s confidence and he went out for the second moto, he rode well but the number two rider in the class was really pushing him. Keith held on and made it through the 12 commandments to hold on for his first overall win ever. He told me if he would have had to do another lap, he would have been in trouble. But, life is full of what if’s and Keith Gilliam earned his first win as a motocrosser and he landed himself the honors of the first ever MRA Vet Class hotshot. I don’t know, as I was leaving the Gilliams pit area, Keiths wife Missy flagged me down and said look what I got. There it was, a bright red honda with the number 216 on the number plate. Later that day I saw her buzzing around the pits. Could this be that the womens class will find still another competitor in it this season. Only time will tell, and please watch out next month. Who know’s who we may feature then.

Chapter 2

The race day started early at Shady Run, and Stevie woke up to the sound of race bikes revving and the smell of freshly made pancakes. Stevie was always up early at the races, helping his dad get the race bikes ready to go. Tom Warner wasn’t racing today. Tom usually rode in the Veteran class reserved for riders over thirty years old, but today was Stevie’s big day, and Tom decided to sit this race out. Stevie jumped out of bed and got dressed in less than a minute. As he headed for the front door on the motor home, he was still trying to get his sneakers on. Stevie’s mom yelled from the kitchen, “Get over here, Stevie, and eat some breakfast!” “But, mom.” “No buts, Stevie. You’ve waited this long, fifteen more minutes is not going to kill you.” Just about that time Stevie’s dad came through the front door laughing, “Listen to your mom, son. You need a good hot breakfast to get your day started right.” “But, dad,” Stevie pleaded. “Let’s eat some pancakes, son, and then we’ll go get you signed up.” “OK, dad,” Stevie sighed. ‘This is killing me,” Stevie thought. After breakfast the Warners headed to the sign—up shack. It was the longest walk Stevie ever had to take; it seemed like they bumped into everybody they knew along the way. Stevie’s dad was very popular at the track. He always had spare parts along and was always willing to help a fellow racer if they were having problems with their bike. Finally, Stevie and his big brother Jake were signed up for their races. Tom Warner had gotten up early and done his final check over on the race bikes and every thing was ready to go. All there was to do now was to walk the track and then wait for practice to start. Tom Warner always walked completely around a course the day of a race no matter how many times he had competed there. It was something his father had taught him and it was a practice he was determined to pass down to his sons. “Come on, Stevie,” yelled Jake, “We’re going to walk the track.” “OK,” Stevie yelled back. “Wait for me!” As they walked around the track, Stevie was so excited. He explained to his dad and his brother how far he was going to fly over each jump on the course. Ten—year —old Jake asked his dad later, “Did I act like that my first time, dad?” Tom Warner smiled and replied, “Worse than that, Jake” “No way,” thought Jake. The Warners got back to the motor home and Stevie was in his gear in no time. “Let’s go, dad” he yelled, “Practice is about to start!” “OK, son, relax, we still have about an hour to wait.” Tom Warner tried to remember his first race. He wasn’t quite as young as Stevie was but it had been many years ago. As his

memories came back to him, he realized at just that moment how big a deal this must be to Stevie. “OK, boys, let’s go” Tom said. Stevie ‘s mom, Jane, looked at her husband as she pointed to her watch. “Let’s be the first ones in line for practice today,” he said. “Yippe!” yelled Stevie, as he ran over to his bright blue race bike, “It’s time!” Stevie’s big brother Jake also realized what his dad was doing as he thought back to his first race just over a year ago. As they sat on the line waiting for practice to start, Stevie’s dad went over last—minute instructions with him. They talked about gears and jumps and making sure Stevie’s helmet was tight. “Dad, is it time yet?” “Five more minutes son,” as they both smiled from ear to ear. Stevie’s class was the first one to practice. His group had about twenty riders in it, many first timers themselves. They had ten minutes to go out and get familiar with the Shady Run course. Stevie was the first one out on the track. Tom and Jane Warner were both nervous and excited. Their baby boy was about to grow up just a little bit more. Stevie came out of the gate and headed for the first corner. “Yippee!” he yelled. “Finally I’m a racer!” He powered his little blue race bike through the corners and over the jumps. He went round and round the course, getting more confident with each lap. Stevie was doing very well, just as his dad had expected. He had been riding for quite a while now, and Stevie had listened to every word his dad had said. He had been a good student. Stevie came off the track from his practice just as he had started, in first place. “I won, I won!” he screamed. “I beat them all dad”. Stevie’s Pap Miller and his mom smiled. They knew it was just a practice. But to Stevie, it was the best thing that had ever happened to him in his entire eight years of his life. “I won dad, I did it!” “Yes, son,” Stevie’s dad said, “you did great! Remember,

though, it was a practice session. It wasn’t the actual race.” “I know dad,,, but I did really well, didn’t I?” “You did fantastic, son,” he said, smiling back at him. “Now let’s get ready for your first moto.” Stevie’s race was the 5th race in the schedule for the day, so they had some time to spare. Jake was racing right after him in the 6th race, so Pap Miller was going to help him. Stevie’s dad was going to help Stevie to the gate, since it was his first race. The anticipation built as the day wore on. The fourth race of the day had just left the gate when Tom Warner looked at Stevie and said, “It’s time.” “Yes!” yelled Stevie. He had been sitting on his bike with his helmet on for the last fifteen minutes. This time out would be a little different than Stevie’s practice. This time all the riders would line up on a gate beside each other and would wait for the gate to fall before they would all race to the first corner fifty yards away. As Stevie pulled up to the gate for his first race, he started to get a funny feeling deep down in his stomach. “Boy, this is different,” he thought. “In practice they were all lined up behind me.” Stevie looked to his left and then his right; there was that Davey Delong. He was the kid that wins a lot. There were seventeen other riders in his class, and Stevie wasn’t sure what to think at that particular moment. Stevie’s dad looked at him and asked, “Are you feeling a little funny, right about now, partner?” “Yeah, dad, how did you know? My stomach feels weird. It’s a little scary.” “Relax Stevie. Can I tell you a little secret?” “Sure dad,” Stevie said, “but make it fast.” “I still get that same weird feeling every time I pull up to the gate.” “Even now?” Stevie asked. “You’ve been racing forever.” “Even now, son, after all these years.” Suddenly Stevie had a feeling of calm come over him; he realized that his dad was just like him. “Are you ready?” Stevie’s dad asked him as he patted him on his back. “Yeah dad” Stevie said. “I’m ready.” If you enjoyed chapter two of “Stevie’s First Race”, please tune into MRA next month to catch the next exciting chapter.

Stevie’s First Motocross Race

February 18-19, 2006 • Harrisburg, PA • Photos by MRA & JCBENSON.COM

The Motorama, 28 years and counting. How many of you were at the first one? All of those years ago. Not me, it wasn’t until the third running of this annual event that I got involved in the business. I remember it well, sleeping in a lawn chair behind a makeshift wall around the top walkway of the big arena so no one would steal our handlebars and knobby tires we had for sale. Motocross racing was quite popular in those days as well. I remember going to Trail-Way Speedway on Saturday nights and having to qualify against 120 other 125cc racers to get in the main event, man we had fun. And to think it has all evolved to this, many of the guys I hung out with back then are still around, only now their son’s and daughter’s are the ones doing the racing. flying dutchmen harescramble PA State Fun Day • February 5, 2006 • By MRA

As the tradition, the Flying Dutchmen Motorcycle Club kicks off the racing festivities each year here in AMA District 6. The event held the first Sunday of February is usually run over ice and snow and is traditionally the 1st round of the BP Promotions PA State Harescramble Series. This year we had two changes, number one was the weather. Temperatures were actually quite mild for this time of the year and there was no snow or ice to be found anywhere. Number two, BP Promotions moved Round 1 of their series to late March in the hopes that studded tires wouldn’t be required. Guess what, no need this year due to the weather. The good news is that BP Promotions turned this early event at the Dutchmen into a PA State Fun Day. That means that any racer that competed earned 5 points towards the year end point series. BP Promotions also picked 15 classes randomly and had free merchandise giveaways to the top 5 riders in each class, all in all a pretty good day to be a Harescramble racer. And what a Harescramble race we had. For the first time since I’ve been covering races in District 6 we had a separate youth ATV race to kick off the mornings racing action. This appealed to both the youth ATV and Bike racers and I believe all our hoping for this format to continue. Hunter Grimes brought home the checkers in the 50cc group with Brian Thorson winning the 70 race and Joseph Bromley handled the 90cc class with ease. In the youth motorcycle races, Jacobus Ferreira got out to the early lead but was eventually tracked down by 85cc pilot Cody Mummert. Mummert would go on for the overall and the 12-15 win. Ferreira would hold on for the Supermini win with motocross racer Jarek Balkovic winning the 65cc 7-9 division. Then came the race we all hope for. Week in and week out, no matter what your discipline you hope to witness a battle like this. Every year it seems we have a few motocross racers come out to the first Dutchmen race to start getting in shape for the mx season. This race was no exception with Pro/ Expert Ty Wallace making the trip to work out the cobwebs. Wallace has held numerous National Numbers over the years and is still a serious threat on any Sunday to take the checkers. Then we also had another treat with ECEA - AA competitor Wally Palmer making the trip to the Dutchmen. Palmer has held a AA card ever since he completed his first year of

racing on a big bike. He is an accomplished off road racer and he even competed in last years ISDE for Team USA. Starting to get the picture? The horn sounded and the Open A division raced down the long Dutchmen start, everyone but Palmer that is. His bike failed to fire immediately and he was dead last heading out towards the back section of the course. Wallace led the first two laps of the contest Pro MX racer Ty Wallace with Palmer making quick work of the rest of wins the FDMC season opener AMS pilot Derek Christensen grabs the field. He worked his way onto Wallace’s in early February. a second in 201-open B. rear fender by the end of lap number two and that’s where he stayed until lap five when Wallace made a pit for gas. From that point on it was cat and mouse with frequent lead changes and it was anybodies guess who your winner might be. Palmer would lead then Wallace, at one point Wallace made up a twelve second deficit racing without any goggles in the famous Dutchmen mud. At the end it would be mx racer Ty Wallace winning by a mere two seconds. It was a combination of great talent; good pit timing and a little bit of good old fashioned luck. Lancaster HD’s Randy Texter has Jacobus Ferreira wins the Supermini The two shook hands at the end and they some fun in the 16+ morning race. division at the PA State Fun Day. were probably both thinking, Geez, I’m glad I don’t have to race this guy again until next year. That left us with the afternoon ATV races. Over 100 quads came out to kick off the 2006 season with Justin Kosmer taking the win in the Open A division. Christopher Peipher won Auto sport with Palmer (R) and Wallace (L) put on one of Michael Carbaugh (531) races to a Thomas Koontz, the best show’s the Dutchmen has seen second in 50cc stock quad. Mini racer Jarek Balkovic has cross trained on trials bikes with BRX for years.

Name: Tyler McCreight Age: 20 years Experience: Racing 10 years Hometown: Brownstown, PA Racing #: 109 Series: PA State Harescrambles Sponsors: BRX, Parts Unlimited, Sherco USA, Ryan Young Products, The Titus Company. Special Thanks: Dwain English, My parents and my girlfriend Kelsey Expert class off road racer Tyler McCreight will be riding the new Sherco 450 four stroke enduro model for Bottle Run Xtreme and Parts Unlimited this season in the BP Promotions PA State Hare Scramble Series. The bike, in its second year of production here in the U.S. is sure to give Tyler a boost in his efforts and should prove a healthy stead to lead him on his quest for a State Title. In 2005 Tyler had a huge lead in the Open A point’s series when he started running into mechanical troubles with his old ride. Even after a few DNF’s Tyler managed to hold onto second place in the series. Tyler deserves this ride as much as anyone. He is a competent racer and he has paid his dues. Tyler has been working since the age of 15 to help pay his way on the race tracks of the region and he certainly has the experience under his belt. If the Sherco performs for him as it did for David Chavez racing the GNCC Series last year, Tyler should be setting pretty. In talking to Tyler he was very humble and grateful for all of the help he receives to help make his race efforts possible. He would like to thank Dwain at Bottle Run for putting his faith in him this season and his parents for helping him along the way. He is especially grateful for his girl Kelsey who helps him pit at the races and who drives to and from when he’s beat from long day of racing. We wish Tyler and his whole team the best of luck in 2006 and when you see him in the winners circle maybe it might be time for you to think about one of those new Sherco 450’s from Bottle Run Xtreme.

“Becoming An ARC Angel” By Angela Koch If you have a child, a loved one or just a friend who is a fellow rider then The RiderDown Foundation should be a household name. I just so happen to fall into this category. My eight year old son Ethan has been racing since he was four years old. Ethan is the driving force behind my becoming an “ARC Angel”. We all would like to believe that in this sport nothing bad will ever happen to our children. The question is not “if”. The question is “when”. On February 18, 2006 at Motorama in Harrisburg, PA I had the pleasure of meeting Jordan Moyer, an injured rider. I presented him with an ARC Angel Gift Bag from RiderDown and the wonderful people at Rocky Mountain ATV*MC. Not only did Jordan break both of his wrists, he did so two days before his sixteenth birthday. The reaction I got from Jordan was one of astonishment. These kids eat, breathe and live to ride. For them to receive a gift such as the ARC Angel Gift Bag because they had a bad get off, well, it pretty much renders them speechless. They love knowing that there is someone out there pulling for them to get back to the sport that we all love and enjoy.

Mike and Jordan Moyer with Angela Koch from Rider Down. I am a wife, a mother, a friend and now I am a full fledged “ARC Angel”. I always say that good karma comes to those who do selfless acts of kindness for others. Thanks to the RiderDown Foundation I have been blessed with the opportunity to bring a smile to the face of an injured child and have been welcomed with open arms into the RiderDown Family! Please visit our website and find out how you too can become a RiderDown Angel and the many other ways that you can help this wonderful organization. You can visit us at WWW.RIDERDOWN.ORG. I truly hope that you will join us in “Helping Riders Up”.

The RiderDown Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping off road motorcyclists who have been injured while riding. Proceeds are used to provide assistance to the riders and their families when faced with medical expenses and related issues.

2005 district 6 awards banquet January 29, 2006 • Fogelsville, PA • by MRA

The 44th Annual 2005 District 6 Awards Banquet was held in late January at the Holiday Inn at Fogelsville, PA. Close to 400 members came out to socialize and enjoy a great dinner buffet. There were dealer and vendor displays, dancing and of course the awards ceremonies. Awards were given in all disciplines of racing thru – out the evening. A few special award winners included Cory Texter for bringing home two National Dirt Track Championships to District 6. Patti Toth, district points and numbers received an award for her commitment to the organization and Dick and Peggy Howell received an award for their years of service. In the world of Trials, their membership created a new award to be named after Dustin Flook. Dustin has overcome much adversity with his health yet still continues to chase his dreams and pursue Trials competition. Dustin is living proof that you can accomplish anything in life if the desire is large enough and you are willing to work for it. Overall this year’s banquet was a huge success. I would like to congratulate all of the award winners and to give a big thanks to the folks at D-6 that make this banquet possible each year and are willing to allow MRA to be a part of it.

Cory Texter brings two National Dirt Track Championships home to D6 in 2005.

Dustin Flook (R) receives an award from the Trials community for overcoming adversity in sport. This award named after Dustin will be presented on a yearly basis.

Lee Ann Bange places second in D6 in the 100 / 150 Four Stroke Harescramble division.

Morgan Wotring (L) and Hunter Titus (R) go 1 - 2 in 70cc Production Quad. You guessed it the goofiest picture award.

D6 Points Keeper Patti Toth receives an award for her commitment to the district.

Kenton Heinbaugh (L) and Derrec Robinson (R) chased each other around the district all year long in Harescramble racing action.

The newest and hottest race team to make a splash on the D-6 scene: MX Pay Day sponsored PDL Racing. As a matter of fact, they’ll be making a splash all over the nation. The boys from PDL will be attending every AMA National this season on their Keeney prepared ECS Hondas. The boys, meaning Casey Clark and Kevin Brodsky are well known is this region of the country. Both have raced around District 6 for most of their lives. Both have won district titles and have earned the respect of their peers because the bottom line is that they both can flat out fly on a motocross bike. Team owner Chad Willard is a local businessman that loves the sport of motocross. Chad began

riding with his friend and neighbor Tom Hewczuk (now team manager) just a few years ago. Chad’s love of the sport along with his willingness to want to help a few local racers enticed him to form PDL Racing over the winter of 2005. The first member of PDL that Chad recruited was John Hewczuk, his team manager’s son. John has been racing locally for the past five years and has a Sleepy Hollow Track championship to his credit. John is enthusiastic about the sport and will represent PDL in the novice classes this year. Watch for John to take his past experiences and combine them with the lessons he can learn from teaming with two of the fastest guys around to quickly advance thru the ranks. Next Chad was looking for a few riders that could represent PDL on the National circuit. Enter Casey Clark and Kevin Brodsky, as I mentioned earlier, two local guys with a ton of talent and experience. Chad has spared no expense in the preparation of their race machines and he is giving them the resources they need to take it to the next level. Their hope is to go out and take advantage of the opportunity that PDL has provided for them and to represent their sponsors well. Look for team PDL to compete locally as well when there are no national events on the calendar. You combine great talent with great resources and some of the best looking bikes money can buy thanks to Keith Brown at Motographx and what do you get? Team PDL Racing of course. Watch for them at a track or on a TV near you.

It was cold and dusty here in the Northeast but in the end it was all worth while. The guy to beat was expert newcomer Phil Nicoletti from Cohecton, New York. I’ve watched this guy compete for the past couple of years starting in the mini ranks. Last year he came off an early season injury as a B rider and he turned up the heat from there. Nicoletti took the overalls in 125 and 250 A and Four Stroke 450. He didn’t win Torey Kauffman and her family from every moto but he got the job done and my bet is by the end of the year Waynesboro, PA win a KLX110 courtesy of there’s going to be a pro team out Gerry Stake at Cumberland Kawasaki.

Sleepy hollow season opener Fredericksburg, PA • March 12, 2006 • by MRA

Springtime in Pennsylvania, it almost wants to make you become a psychic. You never know what you’re going to get this time of the year and boy did we get a shocker for Sleepy Hollows season opener. Temps in the 50’s with a 30% chance of an afternoon shower. I keep telling my kids to grow up and get a job with the weather channel. It’s the only place you can make $60 grand a year and you can screw up all the time and its ok.

The Sleepy Crew did an excellent job battling natures wrath. Anyhow, let’s get on to the racing. The racers came, over 370 to be exact and the rains came and they never stopped. Some of the racers went home, but the rain kept coming. The Sleepy crew did their best to keep up with it, and so did the 320 some racers that decided to stay and go for it. I’m telling you, this district is loaded with some of the most die hard riders that you’ll find anywhere. They slipped and they slid

and they fell and they got up. Some of them hated it, but I believe most of them loved it. You can really see those smiles when the goggles are hanging around the handlebars. Anyhow, I don’t know who won because everybody looks the same when they’re brown. Some of the riders even had to stop at the finish line to yell out their numbers so they could be scored. Check out the results here in MRA to see who did what. Sleepy Hollow also debut their new quad track on this muddy Sunday. I believe most of the quad racers were happy because they now have another place to race. In talking with some of the riders, many said they liked the new track but it needed more jumps. When the people talk, Sleepy Hollow listens. Prior to this printing and just days after the race I spoke with Jere Swarr. Jere’s the owner of Sleepy Hollow MX and I asked Jere what he was up to? He said he was getting ready to head to the track and that he was getting ready to build a new quad track. Stay tuned, you know it’s gonna get better.

After speaking with several of my customers regarding the first race at Sleepy Hollow I thought it might be a good idea to discuss racing in the mud. Actually its not so much the racing as the post race work I’d like to discuss. What any racer should keep in mind is that if you are committing to race in a mud fest you are letting yourself in for hours of

clean up in the days that follow as well as some cash outlay for needed repairs. The one thing you can be sure that everyone will do after the races is to pressure wash their bike and this is a good thing BUT your work doesn’t end there. I have seen a lot of bikes after races like the Sleepy opener that have been washed and then taken to a race the following weekend, this

is a huge mistake. Even after washing there is still a ton of clean up work left. When you are pressure washing your bike it is a good idea to remove the number plates and seat and gas tank so you can clean behind them. Remove your air filter and install one of the plastic air filter covers from Twin Air this will allow you to wash the air box as well. If you don’t want

to risk blowing the removed numberplates and seat into the next county with the pressure washer you can clean them later with the garden hose and a brush. I don’t recommend trying to clean the radiators with the pressure washer as the water pressure will bend the cooling fins seriously reducing their cooling capabilities. Use the pressure washer to blow off the heaviest deposits but don’t get the wand any closer than a couple of feet. After pressure washing drain the coolant and remove the radiators then wash them with a hose and light bristle scrub brush. Now begin dis-assembly. Soak the chain down with WD40 immediately after washing, remove and set aside. Remove the subframe the front fender the rear fender the front wheel the rear wheel the rear shock the front forks .. are you starting to get the idea? You should strip it down till all you are left with is the engine in the frame (and personally I’d pull that as well) Hours spent with a pressure washer will never get a bike totally clean and in fact it will force dirt into critical areas that you will need to service. Most notably the swingarm and linkage bearings and brake calipers will need to be dis-assembled cleaned and greased where necessary. Electrical connections should be sperated cleaned and greased using a di-electric grease. Levers and perches should be dis-assembled, cleaned and greased. Check your cables do they move freely or are they gritty, if so replace them. The shock spring should be removed because I know that it will be packed with dirt around and under the bumper and if left like this it will, over time, corrode the chrome from the shock shaft. Trust me when I say I am not being overly excessive when I tell you these things need to be done. I recommend also that you change your engine and gear box oils because if they haven’t become contaminated with water they will have definitely taken a beating from the heat and clutch abuse. Oh and it might not be a bad idea to take a look at that clutch especially on the smaller displacement bikes, you know what I’m talking about you were slipping that thing every minute of every lap to keep that bike in the powerband and it probably got a years worth of wear on it. Pull the carb, disassemble and clean it thouroughly. Drain whatever gas was left in the tank and then flush the tank with fresh gas to remove any water that might have entered during racing or washing. If you are not willing to do this type of work then avoid racing in the mud otherwise you can expect to experience poor performance and reliability as well as service problems down the road. So to all you people who didn’t do the work after Sleepy, better get to it, there’s a whole new season ahead.

“All we need is just a little patience”. It was 9 O’clock in the morning and I was in Washington D.C. I was making pretty good time, but when you’re on your way to go riding in warmer climates, you can never get there fast enough. Axl Rose had no idea what he was talking about. It was a buddy of mine and myself. We left central Pennsylvania around 5 a.m. and by my watch we would be riding at MX Park East in Clayton, North Carolina about 1:30. We were supposed to meet some others down at that track, but they called us and told us it poured and they were going to Georgia. Since the track was right off I-95 about 20 miles, we decided to go and at the very least…look at the track.

MX Park East I’m not sure what the rest of the guys in the A Class did this off-season, but I know I wasn’t about to sit around and get rusty. I hit the gym hard and got to ride a lot. This particular trip was conveniently planned around the Atlanta Supercross, so it was bound to be great. I was a little worried about taking a week off of work, but wouldn’t you know it…I got laid-off. Guess I don’t have to worry about that anymore. Our main plan was to leave Thursday and get to North Carolina and ride the same day. After that we’d go to Georgia and ride and watch the Supercross. In the days after the SX we were going to start working our way up through Georgia and the Carolina’s all the while riding different places. The southern states are riddled with places to ride. We crossed the North Carolina border about 12:30 and stopped at Subway for some food and gas and to give the van a break. I was taking my G-10 cargo van. It had 170,000 miles on it, which is a lot, but I was confident in my little rig. We got to the track and it looked great from the road, but no one was riding. We pulled in and it was about 80 percent sand and there were a lot of puddles. The owner came down and talked to us, but he was a little hard to understand, kind of like Lyle from Napoleon Dynamite. This guy went on to tell us that the locals there are “a bunch of chumps”. They don’t ride when it’s muddy, and they complain when it gets dusty. He said it was wet but we were more than welcome to ride. And he even told us that if we get out and

MOTOCROSS 04/02 04/01-02 started riding and weren’t happy, he’d give us our money back! The trip was going great already. Besides some puddles, MX Park East was great! It was mostly an SX track with some long straights. The jumps were modest and forgiving, which was perfect for our first days ride, plus it only cost us 10 bucks! We rode for 2 hours and packed back up and headed for Georgia. It was supposed to be another 5-6 hour drive from where we were to Aonia-Pass MX Track in Thomson, Georgia where the rest of the crew was. About 2 hours into the trip down 95 we started seeing those tantalizing signs for South of the Border. You just can’t go past by that place without stopping. It’s like the East coast Reno. Tons of twinkling neon lights, some kind of Mexican theme, and FIREWORKS. Of course…I didn’t buy any. NOT! I snagged a little rocket assortment for the 4th, it’ll be a miracle if they go untouched until then though. We drove as long as we could. After logging seven and a half hours before we rode, then riding two hours, we knew it’d be a miracle if we actually made it to Georgia that night. We knocked out about 3 hours and the two of us were so beat that we decided to get a hotel in Columbia, South Carolina, which was only about an hour and a half away from the track. Up at 7 in the morning, snag continental breakfast and off we went. We arrived at the track at about 10. When I pulled in I was surprised to see my buddy Rich Maychrich from MX Sponsor there with a crew of his own. Tom Sebastian and Alex Gaul were parked right behind us and Barry Carsten was on hand as well, and the track was perfect. There were a ton of people there that day, riders like Barry were getting ready to race the SX, and the rest of us were just putting in some time before we watched the SX. Aonia-Pass MX was really nice. After a long day of riding the best thing is getting a nice hot shower, and that’s exactly what they’ve got; flushing toilets with pretty nice showers. Granted, there were spiders and stuff, and a couple of leftover bars of soap, but this guy wasn’t complaining. It rained all day on Saturday, the day of the SX. So instead of just hanging out watching it rain, we loaded into my van and drove to another track just 25 miles west of AoniaPass, this track was called Rollin Haven and it was built by Mark Barnett. I wish it wouldn’t have rained because that track was cool. It had some sections that looked like you could really haul through them. Too wet though, at least we got to look at it. The SX was that night; you can read more about that elsewhere in the issue.

For the next 6 days we ran up the East coast riding places like Durhamtown Plantation in Georgia as well as TNT and DNA in South Carolina. Durhamtown was pretty cool. You can rent bikes or quads and they have tons of trails plus 5 different MX tracks. They had a really cool freestyle ramp. I’ve never hit one before and I was eying it up. I decided to go off of it a couple of times. It was nothing big, I think from the take off to the landing it was only 30 feet, but it shot me straight up. All I could really do was a couple of whips and a nacnac, I’m no freestyler. Well, like I said the next couple of days we rode at a few different places, but there had been no more rain and most of the tracks hardened up like cement. We still rode a lot, but the conditions weren’t as nice as when we arrived. So on Friday we packed up and headed home. We figured we might be able to squeeze another day out if we stopped at North Carolina Motorsports Park, but that was hard as a rock too and our funds were running short. Once we got on into Virginia I remembered seeing a sign for Virginia Motorsports Park and it was right off the highway. We went there and checked it out. HOLY AWESOME TRACK! That guy knows how to build and maintain a track. It had this huge quadruple step-up that was 115 feet. About 100 sprinklers were around the track to assure perfect watering everywhere, and he had enough equipment to start his own excavating business. Well

Please verify all events with promotor. This is a preliminary schedule. if you need a great place to ride, check that place out. I didn’t get to ride it, but I walked it and talked to the owner and he runs a great program down there. The trip was a success, no major mishaps with the van and no major injuries or bike problems. The only thing that went wrong was my front left shock fell off of my van on 95. After that, it was making this horrible racket. This off-season is coming to a close. When next winter rolls around and you find yourself with the itch, don’t just sit around

Durhamtown watching SX. Get a couple guys together and head out for a three-day weekend. You can be at North Carolina Motorsports Park in 7 hours give or take depending on where you’re from. It’s actually an affordable trip if you take 3 guys splitting all costs. Gas, of course, is your biggest expense. Ride safe!

Tech Tips

GET A GRIP Installing safety wire on your grips is not a new trick and one I’m sure most of you have seen it before. There are many methods of securing your handgrips, from hairspray to friction tape. I for one can’t stress how important it is have your grips stay on tightly. A true water and mud race will put them to the test. There are few things more distracting than trying to finish a race with a rotating grip, and worse yet trying to hold on to a muddy handlebar without any grip at all. First you have to remove your old grips. You can cut them off or use an air compressor. Ras racing makes a nifty little air

Winning Starts Here

tool that fits under the edge of the grip. Some manufacturers, such as Suzuki have their grips glued so well that you will have to cut them off. After removing the grips, clean the handlebar surface with any good solvent or carb cleaner.

Now we install the new grips. I like to use Scott’s grip glue in the small tube, there’s just the right amount of glue for installing two grips and no messy tube to contend with. If you put the glue in the grips rather than on the bars you’ll have less glue oozing out. If you have a half waffle type, make sure you position them correctly. I like to put 3 safety wires around each grip, with the

twisted ends in the area of your fingertips. Make sure you press any sharp ends into the grip.

While we’re on the grips, here are a few tricks for your levers. It’s a good idea to keep your perch pinch bolts a bit loose. If you fall, instead of breaking a lever the entire assembly will rotate on your bars. You want to keep it tight enough to stay in place, but still be able to move if you crash. You can also wrap Teflon tape around your bars before installing the perches, of buy one of the rotating bar clamps available. The folding levers from ASV and ARC work great, but are not in every racer’s budget. Here’s

another trick if you’re using a standard lever. Drill two holes halfway through your lever next to the ball end. This will act like a breakaway point if your lever does break off. This way you will still have most of your lever to finish the race instead of the lever breaking near the pivot bolt and leaving you with nothing. Old Bridge Twp. Raceway Park Lawrence Tames Jersey Mud By Scott Lukaitis Photos by Lukaitisphoto.com ENGLISHTOWN, NJ, MAR 12 Living in the Northeast you know the one thing about the weather in March it’s that it is totally unpredictable. The day before the 31st annual Yamaha sponsored Opening Day at Raceway Park riders were treated to sunny skies and warm temperatures but when it came time to race on Sunday it was quite different. Sunday dawned with grey skies and drizzle but the weather forecasters said it would clear up. Boy, were they wrong. Not only didn’t it clear up but the rains actually got worse. The endless hours spent by Mickey Kessler and his crew getting the track in shape were all for naught as the torrential rains turned every inch of the track to a soupy sloppy mess. Many riders chose to go home and not start the season off on the wrong foot, many stayed and braved the conditions. As a friend of mine, Mike Daddio, once said to me “it’s anybody’s race in the mud” and it sure was. The decision was made to change the racing format to a single moto winner take all format. The riders would be forced to put it all on the line if they hoped for the victory. The big winner of the day was Rockstar Energy rider Jason Lawrence. Lawrence was home in New Jersey during a break in the West Coast Supercross season and decided to pay his friend a little visit. While many factory support riders would have left with their rent-a-cars when the rain came Lawrence gutted it out in the awful conditions. He won the college boy class and after going down early in the 250 expert class Lawrence came back to win the moto with no gloves or goggles. Hopefully Jason can use some of this grit on the National tour this season. In 85cc 7-11 racing Honda rider Anthony Maimone jumped out to the early lead over Bobby Lipyanek, Robert Piazza, and Richie Trevelise. This moto was one of survival as

the lead continually changed between the riders. Just when one rider would take the lead he would get stuck in a deep rut only to be passed by another rider, and back and forth it went. Piazza eventually held on for the victory followed by Lipyanek, Maimone and Trevelise. In 125 expert class action second year expert Bobby Jiminez put his Dragon Optics Kawasaki in front of Raceway Park veteran Jimmy Mc Ilvaine and Robert Malkiewicz. McIlvaine got redemption by slogging through the mud to claim the 30+ Expert class. RRP rider Ty Wallace claimed the 25+ expert class and long time Raceway Park competitor and nice guy Harold Glissen made the trip back from Daytona worthwhile by winning the 40+ expert class So opening day of the 31st anniversary season wasn’t bright and sunny but the racing was excellent anyway. I know I’m ready for the next race. I just won’t listen to the weather forecast the night before…and I’ll pack an umbrella.

Season Opener • March 19, 2006 by JIMMUCKLIN.COM Pagoda Update: As you may have heard we’ve undergone some changes (despite protests from long time back bowl bar-b-que chef du jour Bill Colihan). While we’ve maintained our established layout the track is now being run in the opposite direction. Naturally this necessitated changes to nearly every jump on the track in order to establish a good flow. Regardless we’ve stayed true to that classic Pagoda form and have added a few new twists and turns for good measure. One thing all riders (especially out of shape Seniors and vet’s such as Ken Rodenbaugh and I) will appreciate is that the track exit is now at the top of the hill near the sign up area. Meaning no one will have to push their bike up the hill any longer. Left leads to overflow parking, right leads down hill to the main parking area, straight ahead leads directly to the “MX Doc” McGee combination box van bar, brothel, oil change, shimming stand, surgical aid station, and bike wash. Just ask the doc for one of his specials and I’m sure he’ll be happy to hook you up with a cold one, a warm one, $12 a bottle of slightly used sticky green oil, a few used shims, a goiterectomy, and complimentary bike wash in exchange for a mere photo of your under 26 year old honey or a few used tools. Also due to popular demand we’ve added several more truckload of that fine oak sawdust to

our soil. Accordingly we’d like thank Steve Philips of Philips Mushroom Farm for supplying the soil. He would surely appreciate it if you would all remember to eat more Shitake Mushrooms. Randy Kastle would like for you all to please keep in mind that these changes are a work in progress and as the year progresses we will continue to evolve the new layout to better suit all our valued patrons. Later on this year we plan to update our starting area and add a Supercross style section to the top half of the track (for night time Supercross). ktm jUNIOR sx cHALLENGE Rider: Scotty Stockunas Event: Atlanta Supercross Age: 7 years Hometown: Mahonoy Plane, PA Class: 50cc (7-8) District #: 98s Sponsor: Gap Racing In late February, D-6 Racer Scotty Stockunas traveled with his family and his trainer Eric Sebastian to Atlanta, GA. to participate in the KTM Junior Supercross Challenge. The KTM sponsored event is an opportunity of a lifetime for young racers

from around the country. Each year a select number of riders get to race in packed stadiums on factory prepared bikes with their own mechanics during an AMA Supercross event. They get loaded up with free gear and they have their own autograph session and they get to meet all the pros. This year Atlanta boasted the largest crowd in Supercross history and young Scotty Stockunas raced his heart out and finished 6th in front of 70,133 people. Way to go Scotty and way to go KTM.

LOCAL RIDERS TRAIN HARD IN FLORIDA By Nicole Sidle   Hey MRA readers! Every year a lot of district 6 riders go down to Florida to train and ride to get ready for the up coming season. My dad, my brother, and I went down from February 17th-26th and traveled with Tom Sebastian and Alex Gaul from Gap Racing. The first track we stopped at was Pax Trax Motocross Park. We stayed there for 2 days and the track was outstanding! There we saw Tyler Wozney and Brian Wasson. After the boys were done riding at the same track for 2 days, our crew
