AMA Pro Racing Sold AMA selects Daytona Motorsports Group to manage professional racing series
S487378
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.--The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) announced today that the Association has entered into an agreement in principle to sell the sanctioning, promotional and management rights for its AMA Pro Racing properties to the Daytona Motorsports Group (DMG), based in Daytona Beach, Florida. Led by Roger Edmondson, the founder of the CCS motorcycle racing series and currently the President of the Grand American Road Race Series LLC, and Jim France, Vice Chairman/ Executive Vice President of NASCAR, DMG will assume responsibility for the AMA Superbike Series, the AMA Motocross Series, the AMA Flat Track Series, the AMA Supermoto Series, the AMA Hillclimb Series and ATV Pro Racing. The agreement in principle does not include the AMA Supercross and AMA Arenacross Series, the rights to which are held by Live Nation. Daytona Motorsports Group will license the use of the AMA name and trademarks to promote their motorcycle racing activities. “For as long as I can remember, the AMA name has been synonymous with professional motorcycle racing in America,” said France. Added Edmondson, “Our goal is to guide the sport into the mainstream of American culture and showcase the extraordinary abilities of the competitors and their teams.” “We are honored to be working with the Daytona Motorsports Group,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “This group of individuals has supported the AMA and motorcycle racing for decades. There isn’t a better-resourced or more qualified entity in which to entrust the future of AMA Pro Racing.” The agreement between the AMA and DMG came as a result of an RFP (request for proposal) process undertaken by the AMA in September, 2007 to seek promotional partners for its professional racing series. The AMA will continue sanctioning amateur motorcycle racing and club activities. “Today is a great day for professional motorcycle racing and for the AMA,” Dingman said. “By placing AMA Pro Racing in the hands of people with a proven record of excellence in motor sports organization and promotion in a fashion similar to our successful partnership with Live Nation, the AMA will be able to focus its resources on its core mission to be a member advocacy organization.”

Hello Race Fans
pr promises to be one of the biggest spectator events of the year.
Ot Other exciting news is the expansion of race co coverage for MRA. Watch our pages this year as we increase our off road offerings to include the PA State Harescramble Series, increased ECEA co coverage and in addition, coverage of the new NE Championship Series. NEOC W When it comes to motocross, we’ll have it. In ad addition to our staple coverage of the MDRA and Ul Ultimate MX Series you’ll see select rounds of the PA Series and the Suzuki ATV Regional Series. PAMX W be expanding to cover Delmarva Series races We’ll an MAMA events as well. Who knows where we’ll and sto Stay tuned, it’s going to get good. stop. Well folks, here we go, racing into another great season of race coverage here in the area. I would like to welcome you all back and wish everyone the best for the upcoming year of competition. It should be an exciting one. You as racers have a ton of options this year no matter what your discipline. There are expanded flat track schedules, a new harescramble series and lots of motocross. I guess the most exciting news is the year end motocross shoot out between the MDRA, PAMX and the Ultimate MX Series leaders. This shootout in October at Doublin Gap will host the top 15 racers in each class from each series to see who the fastest racers of the area really are. Stay tuned for that one, full gates in 20+ classes coming at you wide open. Another big race you may want to check out in the fall of 2008 is Half Mile Flat Track Racing at the York Fairgrounds. It’s back after 20 years and
Pl Please remember that increased race coverage means more race contributors. Just because you may not see me at a track doesn’t mean that MRA is not there. Watch our website the beginning of every week to see who was there covering your great racing action. We’ll have links to the various photographers websites so you can view and purchase your race images the same as always. Then watch our pages for the complete race report and all the happenings from around the area. In closing, many of you may be reading MRA for the very first time. We sent a few extras out this month to introduce you folks that we haven’t met in the past to what we do here at MRA. It’s our goal to offer the best and most complete amateur race coverage available here in our region. If you like what you see, please consider a yearly subscription to MRA . Who knows, you just might catch yourself in the pages of MRA. Until next time - Jim Bull, MRA

Rider: Wyatt Barto
Obituary of Wyatt M. Barto Wyatt M. Barto, 10, of 251 Airport Road, Fredericksburg, died Monday February 4, 2008, in Children’s Hospital at the University Of North Carolina Medical Center, Chapel Hill, NC, following injuries sustained in a motocross accident while practicing in Henderson, NC. Wyatt was born in Lebanon on May 29, 1997 and was the son of John L. Barto, Jr. of Fredericksburg and Corie M. Noel of Jonestown. He was a Fifth Grade Student at Fredericksburg Elementary School where he participated in the school chorus, played on the Northern Lebanon Viking Pony Football Team, and was a wrestler with the Viking Matt Club. During release time from school, he attended Mt. Zion Road Church of the Brethren.
Event: Sleepy Hollow MX Hometown: Jonestown, PA Age: 7 yrs. Ride: KTM 50 District #: 529 Experience: 2nd Year Racing Class: 50cc 4-6 Oil / Stock Hobbies: Wrestling Sponsors: G & L Trophies, Lebanon Valley Cycle, Keeney Motosports, Action Photos, Yamaha KTM of Camp Hill, Shelly and Dad and a special Thanks to Grammy. MRA would like to feature Wyatt Barto as this months Holeshot Hotshot. We caught up with Wyatt at Sleepy Hollow last month and as usual he was pulling the holeshots in both of his classes. Wyatt is a consistent winner around the region, he is leading D-6 in the 4-6 Oil division and is currently in second place in the 4-6 Stock class, he missed a few races there due to some bike trouble. Wyatt is also shooting for his first track championship at Sleepy Hollow this season. It seems like wherever we bump into this young man, he is out front and on the gas. Wyatt has a ton of support from his family, his dad John holds an A card in the district and his Grammy is in charge of the whole racing effort. Keep an eye on this young hotshot, my bet is you’ll see him on the podium many times in the years to come, and watch out next month. You just might be the next MRA Holeshot Hotshot. Jim Bull – MRA March 1, 2008
Sadly, we as a racing family lost Wyatt to the sport he loved in February of this year. He passed onn after an accident while practicing for the upcoming racing season. He will be deeply missed by manyy of us as we continue thru life. We just have to cherish and be grateful for the time we did have heree on earth with Wyatt. He is now standing on top the podium of life with God in heaven waiting for thee rest of his friends and family to cross the finish line in this game we call life.
His passion for motocross racing began at age four. At age seven, he was sponsored by MCW (Miller’s Cycle Works, Leola) and Conti USA, Italy to race nationally. Wyatt was the first individual in the US to be sponsored by Conti USA in Motocross racing of which he was very proud. By the time he was Eight, he was rated 32nd in National Motocross Racing and won the District Six Championships three times. Surviving in addition to his parents are two brothers, Evan L. Barto and Shayden O. Barto, both at home; two sisters, Kylynn M. Klopp and Madison G. Klopp, both of Jonestown; a step-brother, Damian M. Klopp of Jonestown; a step-mother, Shelli L. Barto of Fredericksburg, and a step-father, Michael J. Klopp of Jonestown; Maternal Grandparents, Jerome Noel, Sr. of Hanover and Shawn Gilbert of Jonestown; Paternal grandparents, John, Sr. and Linda Barto of Annville and Brenda Barto of Lebanon; and Paternal Great Grandmother, Mildred Flocken of Annville. F OR I M M E DIAT E R E L EA S E Extremeion Carbon Raptor® Diamond-Like Carbon Coating delivers Race-Proven Performance Improvements for Motorcycle Fork Tubes and Shock Shafts Denver, NC January 10, 2008 - Extremeion Carbon Raptor, a proprietary diamond-like carbon coating (DLC), is used by AMA Supercross and Motocross champions to improve handling and increase fork tube and shock shaft component life. The Carbon Raptor Plasma Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition (PACVD) process coats component surfaces with a carbon film to reduce friction and surface wear. Carbon Raptor is highly flexible, won’t break off, and is known to be the highest hardness and lowest friction DLC available. Carbon Raptor increases suspension response by reducing sticking and sliding friction of the forks and shocks. Components are also made resistant to scratches and nicks, which extends service life and shock seal longevity. Learn more at www. extremeion.com.
About Extremeion Extremeion is the racing division of Anatech LTD. Over the years Anatech LTD has produced parts enhancement technology for some of the best teams in motorsports. Top teams in NASCAR, IRL, NHRA, AMA and other racing sanctions realize performance gains when using Extremeion Carbon Raptor. Carbon Raptor provides a high hardness and low friction surface to help components overcome the friction as well as surface wear limitations of their materials. By
reducing friction, galling, and surface-wear the performance and service life of components are increased. Parts that had to be replaced after one race are now routinely performing for two to three races. Additionally, reductions in sliding friction between components allows for a more smooth and fluid operating action.
to surfaces with no post-coating finishing needed, and maintains the finish of polished surfaces. Carbon Raptor is highly adhesive and can withstand high contact stress with no delaminating. It is very flexible, will not flake off, and wears as microscopic carbon. Carbon Raptor also conducts heat away from component surfaces, thereby reducing the potential for overheating and galling.
Carbon Raptor is differentiated from other high hardness coatings by using a Plasma Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition process to achieve a superior combination of high hardness and low friction. Carbon Raptor applies to steel, stainless steel, titanium, aluminum and other nonporous metals. Application thickness is 2 to 4 microns (80 to 160 millionths in.) so no changes are needed for component dimensions. Carbon Raptor applies with an even thickness over a 3-dimensional component to provide uniform performance on all component surfaces and preserve surface geometry. The coating conforms
Popular uses for Extremeion Carbon Raptor include engine valves, valve spring retainers, camshafts, piston wrist pins, axle pinion gears, transmissions, and shifters. Carbon Raptor is also frequently used with motorcycle fork tubes and shock shafts. Non motorsports use includes medical devices and pipe bending tools. The gates were also packed in almost all of the ATV divisions. These classes continue to grow and they put on a great show for the spectators as well. Big winners on the weekend included Tyler Dommel dominating the 200/300 class with Frankie Perez grabbing three wins in amateur competition. As the norm, Jason Dunkelberger would show the expert riders around the familiar Motorama course winning three events on the weekend.

Harrisburg, PA – The 30th Annual Motorama Indoor Races and Shows was back in action at the Harrisburg Farm Show Complex, Saturday February 16th, and Sunday February 17th, 2008. The complex which boats over 30 acres of enclosed grounds, was host to the largest Motorama yet, with everything from Arenacross racing, Speed Show, Tunerwar, Robot Conflict, Go-Kart racing, Quarter Midgets, a Spina Bifida Charity Auction, and the Ms Motorama Pageant. With the commencement of the Arenacross finals, the large arena’s 7,000 seats were filled to maximum capacity while many more spectators filled the remaining standing room. Motorama would like to thank all of the sponsors, participants, and fans for making this the most successful year yet! The planning for the 31st annual Motorama Events Indoor Races and Shows has already begun. The dates for the upcoming show are set for February 21st and 22nd, 2009. The ECEA would like to thank ALL who contributed towards and supported our event and riders, namely Moose Racing, Dunlop Tires (70 tires certificates were distributed!), DP Brakes, PG Graphics, KTM, B&B Yamaha – KTM in Lancaster, Fairway Motorcycle, Matto Cycle, Bromley’s, Pivot Pegz, Rich Lafferty Racing, White Horse RV, PowerSeal USA, the clubs of the ECEA plus many, many more! Shootout at Budds Creek in early November.
Angelo Manerchia leads John Lesko is School Boy racing action.
This was MRA’s first trip to the Delmarva Motorsports facility and we really liked the place. The track appeared challenging yet safe for all skill levels and spectators could view all of the action from almost every angle. Close to 500 bike racers showed up for today’s event plus a slew of quad racers. Sorry we couldn’t get the
The quad racers were out in numbers today - sorry we don’t have your results listings.
Rd 1 of the 2008 Delmarva MX Series sponsored by Moto Jockey kicked off the first weekend in March at the Delmarva Motorsports Park, formerly Middleford Speedway in Seaford, DE.
results or numbers there, but most gates were full and in some cases two groups had to be run.
This series, now in its third year is picking up steam as it visits several new venues this year including Evansville MX Park and Dutchmen MX Park in the north. Pagoda MC will be included again this season as well as the Landing MX, Blue Diamond Park and of course the Delmarva Motorsports Park. The series will consist of 12 rounds total prior to the big series ending Delmarva Series
The day started off with the Vet Quads hitting the track with 26 classes being run right on thru the expert, novice and mini racers. The weather was perfect for a season opener with beautiful blue skies and temperatures which were tolerable for all.
Jeremy Caudill wins both 50 (4-6) and 50 Oil.
Sean Kelly soars to the win in both Supermini and 85cc (12-15).
The Delmarva Series requires no special membership cards and they are offering over $20,000.00 in cash and prizes for the upcoming season. You can find complete details and results from today’s event on their website at: www.delmarvamxseries.com and be sure to check out all of the racing action at: www.mcracingaction.com. By the time you are reading this, both rounds two and three will be in the books and next up will be round four at the Pagoda Motorcycle Club. TR is the parent company of the apparel brands MSR and Answer Racing and is one of the largest motorcycle parts and apparel distributors in the world. This series also draws some of the biggest factory contingency money around offering over $225,000. big ones over the five race series. In turn the series draws one of the largest competitor bases to chase all those big bucks that are available to amateur racers. On top of that many other local and national companies step up to offer free goodies and a new motorcycle is given away by a sponsoring dealer at each round. This rounds winner was Chris Duymich from Millstone, NJ. Duymich was the proud winner of a new Suzuki pit bike donated by Cernics Suzuki.

NJ Rider Spotlight By Scott Lukaitis Many racers and fans around the country recognize Harold Glissen. His outgoing personality and friendly nature make his a great person to talk to. He has overcome adversity and rose to the ranks of an expert racer and now in his 40’s he is continuing to do what he loves. Race motocross. Oh by the way Harold does it all with just one arm.
March 08, 2008
Here is the story of Harold Glissen. Tell us a little bit about yourself. I was born without a left forearm and hand. I’ve been riding since I was 10 years old and racing motocross since 1979. I own and operate a full landscaping company, Glissen Landscaping LLC since 1986. We install and design landscaping, interlocking paver patios, driveways, walkways and retaining walls. We’re currently running two divisions, landscaping and lawn maintenance. In the beginning you had a tough time getting to race in New Jersey. The tracks didn’t want to let you race due to your disability. Tell us a little about your tryout with Raceway Park. Yes it was tough in the beginning. Race promotersKen Landerman and Jay Irwin at Raceway Park thought it might be dangerous for a one armed kid to race motocross due to insurance reasons. My friend, Ray Cross, pleaded with them to allow me to ride at a practice session to assess my abilities. They liked how I rode and allowed me to race that day in the 125 Amateur Class. It was a little different back then because you would have 4-6 125cc qualifiers and they only took the top 20 riders from each moto to make the finals. It was very difficult and I didn’t qualify until 1980. You had a successful amateur career and moved up to the expert class. As an expert level racer for many years you even raced some nationals back in the day. Tell us a little about that. I had several 125 and 250 Amateur wins and turned Expert in 1990. I received my pro license in 1998 and raced the 125 Nationals fulfilling a childhood dream of mine. I had some good rides and found my ability. I rode to the limit of that ability. I was featured in a few magazines and several newspaper publications. Today I compete in the 25+, 30+, and 40+ Expert classes. Last fall you went down to Travis Pastrana’s house to try a back flip. How did that go? John Sigismondi got me invited to Travis Pastrana’s house. I went down and met with Travis’dad Robert, what a character, he went through and gave me some pointers as to what to do and assured me that I would not miss the foam pit. I was a little nervous at first, which I’m sure you can understand, but once I had my helmet and goggles on I went for it. My first attempt seemed like an inverted Barrel Roll and I landed completely upside down on my head. It felt a little weird being inside the foam pit with minimal lighting and air. It only took them a few minutes to dig me out but it felt like forever. The next few attempts got better rotations and the tires went into the foam first. I can’t wait to go back and try again and eventually do a back flip onto dirt. You have been using Bel-Ray lubricants for many years; tell us how your relationship with them got started. As with many young racers, you want to use the best products you can find and Bel-Ray
was that product for me. 29 years later, I’m still using Bel-Ray. I have been Bel-Ray sponsored since 1998 when I was racing the Nationals. I have a great rapport with the people at Bel-Ray. I’m mainly promoting their products on the local level through my travels by giving out products such as hats, t-shirts and oil to the kids and their families. More than likely if you give a kid Bel-Ray products you can be sure he will be using them for his entire riding career. Who would you like to thank for helping out with your racing. Oh boy!! I have a long list of people I’d like to thank over the years. Starting with Ray Cross, a family friend who first took me to a race in 1979. I would also like to thank Bob Sorensom, Malcolm Forbes, Uncle Carmen, Scott Lukaitis, KPS, RRP, Bel-Ray, Action Motor Sports, Stumpy’s Yamaha, Rekluse, Scott Goggles, Dragon, Twin Air, Boyesen, Ed Brazina, Glissen Landscaping and all my friends, fans and people who have inspired me over the years. Outside of racing you own and operate a hugely successful landscaping business. Tell us about that side of your life. In 1986, I wanted to be self-employed so I could have the freedom to ride more often. So I quit my job at Mobile Research Laboratory, bought a 21” Snapper Lawn Mower and launched my landscaping business. 22 years later, I have designed and installed landscaping, interlocking paver walkways, driveways and patios and retaining walls in Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Some of our projects are featured in Cambridge Clayton Block Company brochures and catalogs. We have participated in numerous trade shows and exhibitions such as The Flower and Garden Show at the NJ Convention & Expo Center, The Home Show at Brookdale Community College and The Home Improvement exhibit at The Freehold Raceway Mall. We also have a newly designed website at www.glissenlandscaping.com For more information about our business check out our website. It lists our company philosophy, our services, a photo gallery and testimonials. In conclusion, as a long time friend I have admired Harold’s success as a person in all that he does all the while not realizing the obstacles that he has overcome in everyday life. If you don’t know Harold you should. Stop by and say hi at the track next time you see him. For a link to photos of Harold check out this interview on the web at www.njmotocross.com

Bobby Kinsley takes 1st O/A in both 85 (12-13) Mod and Stock.
With the forecast calling for heavy rains on Friday and Saturday and a few hundred riders and spectators traveling from Texas and California to New York New Jersey - Maryland and PA braved the weather to qualify for a Loretta Lynn’s regional spot. Several classes were postponed on Saturday due to the inclement weather as Sunday’s forecast called for sun and to the delight of the competitors the forecast came true. By the time the second round of motos was reached the dust was already flying and so some of the heavy muck from Saturday was pushed back onto the track. The track surface itself was in great condition, but if you got off the track the probability was there to be stuck in a couple feet of heavy mud. It was wonderful to see
Derek Miller moves on with a 5th in Motocross C. Derek Miller back on the track and to see so many riders at my first race of the season. We want to congratulate all those now qualified for the trip to the north east regional Loretta’s qualifier.
Brock Papi and Shane Desell both advance in 50 Sr. (7-8). Budds Creek plays host to an LL Qualifier every year.
Heavy rains caused riders to battle adverse conditions on Saturday.

$170 and I’ve already seen them advertised for $152. However, you get what you pay for. It is not as high tech as the Leatt but if it’s all you can afford then it’s definitely better than nothing. The brace won’t be available till May. There was nothing in the Alpinestars booth about their new brace, all I could pick up was that it won’t be available till August and will retail for $500. While I was at the SixSixOne booth they had a chest protector with a built in neck brace, it was only a prototype but they will be available the fourth quarter of this year.
By Al Carr This past February I attended the annual Motorcycle Industry Trade Show in Indianapolis, IN. It’s the largest gathering in the U.S. of motorcycle distributors and manufacturers all in one place displaying their ‘08 line to attending dealers. I arrived on Friday morning and after checking in at the hotel caught the shuttle bus to the convention centre. First thing is to check in and pick up my show badge. The show doesn’t officially open until Saturday but there were a few exhibitors already set up so I decided to wander around and see what was new. The first thing I noticed was that there were a lot of Chinese manufacturers displaying their line of motorcycles and ATV’s. At first glance they didn’t look too bad but once you start to really scrutinize you can see the level of quality isn’t what we are used to. I’m always shocked at how small the axles are and that’s not a good thing. Japanese products had quality issues when they first hit our shores but they overcame them very quickly and I’m sure the Chinese will do the same. Then I checked out some of the latest offerings in Trials bikes from Beta and Gas Gas, very cool. Did you know that their 125 weighs 148 lbs? That has got to be fun to ride. I swung into the Pro wheel booth, their wheel packages look very nice and colorful but their prices will have a hard time competing with the guys over at Warp 9. $353. for a complete wheel with rotors and sprockets is going to be a tough act to follow. After looking around a bit more I headed back to the hotel deciding to get a good nights sleep in preparation for Saturday. The number of exhibitors is truly staggering, it’s impossible to see everything in two days, especially when you stop by a booth and end up chatting for 20 minutes. One of the first places I went was the EVS booth. A lot of my customers have been asking about the new EVS neck brace so I wanted to see for myself what they had to offer. The brace will retail for
I swung by the Boyesen booth and spoke with Dag Boyesen about the new X-Wing. This is an intake device along the lines of the Power-Now. The X-Wing however looks like there was a lot more development time put into it as some models have some truly bizarre shapes. Dag has tested every one so far and assures me that they all work very well. Retail price will be right there with the Power Now and Power Blade. I think this product will prove once again the guys at Boyesen truly are the Intake experts. Of course I visited the Race Tech booth. I spoke in length with Paul Thede about everything. A new product they have for ‘08 is the Rebound Separator Valve. An inherent problem many OEM shocks have is that when you adjust the rebound it also effects the compression. This makes it difficult to get the right low speed action from your compression. The Separator Valve does just what the name implies and a rebound adjustment no longer compromises your compression setting. It retails for $49.95 and can be installed during a routine service or re-valve. As a Race Tech centre I am carrying them in stock. We spoke a lot about Super Moto set ups and the necessity for changing triple clamps to achieve the correct trail numbers but in the course of the conversation Paul told me about Super Singles. One of my customers who races an RS125 and 250 told me about this some time ago but it kinda went in one ear and out the other. At the show however there were a couple of these on display and let me tell you they are cool. They take a YZ450 or CRF450 and convert it into a Road Racer; it looks just like what you expect to see at Laguna Seca or Brands Hatch. Supposedly you can buy one ready to race for about 16 - 17,000. dollars. It is supposed to be the next big thing. It’s got me thinking about Road Racing again. There were a lot of manufacturers from Europe, particularly Italy. I spent a bit of time talking with Fabio Bianchi about his tubeless spoked wheel assemblies for Super Moto applications AND moto-cross. That’s right we may soon be doing away with tubes altogether. Flats may be a thing of the past. Dunlop and Bridgestone are both working on tires for this application. His company also offers a dual disc front hub assembly for Super Moto but there’s no reason it couldn’t be used in a Moto-Cross application. How cool would that be to wheel up to the line with one of those. Â Retail price $2500. Ouch.
I could go on and on about all the stuff I saw at the show but space is limited, one thing I will say is that based on the turn out of exhibitors and Al Carr dealers our industry is still going strong. Hopefully we can weather the beating the oil companies are putting on us and keep our industry growing far into the future. Engine Services Suspension Services Parts & Acc. P MX PARK DOUBLIN WarGA mup - March 15, 2008 NE Classic
By Jim Bull
Michael Cahill (59) wins 25+ A and Vet A. Saturday March 15th brought the 2008 season opener as well as a North East Classic warm up race to the Doublin Gap MX Park in Shippensburg, PA. The day offered fantastic weather for an early season race with mild temperatures and bright sunny skies. Traditionally racers from all over the east coast converge to race the North East Classic series now in its 16th year. Doublin
small jumps were added at various locations with another big change made coming into the finish line rhythm section. There was a pair of double jumps previous with the first being turned into a small table top and the second being built into a larger humpback type jump. Everyone I spoke with seemed to enjoy the new course.
One of the bigger surprises of the day came in the expert division racing. Local, Broc Schmeylun who has just moved up from the amateur classes took the overall in both premier expert divisions. Schmelyun has always been at the top of his classes even thru his mini racing days. It’s not too often though that a racer moves up to the A divisions and performs like he did on this day. He was definitely the man to beat and believe me when I say, there were some very fast competitors racing this event. The day went smoothly as racers dialed in the track for Sundays upcoming Round # 1 of the MSR / Answer Racing North East Classic series. Please enjoy the results here from today’s race as well as event photos at: www.mcracingaction.com and Sunday’s event race coverage can be found in the center section of this month’s issue.
Hurricane Hills’ Joe Fritz grabs the Senior A win. holds this warm up race every year to allow the racers to work out the cobwebs and prepare for this five race series. Just over 250 racers braved the weather forecasts, calling for rain all weekend to come out and sample the recently changed Doublin course. Those that stayed home missed a perfect track as again the weather people messed up. Small amounts of rain fell Friday night overnight leaving a new and improved track ready for racing all weekend long. Some of the track changes included a build up of the first turn taking away that feeling of falling off the end of the earth if you went in too hard. The off camber was removed allowing for much smoother starts. A few

HOW TO REMOVE AND INSTALL REAR AXLE BEARINGS ON MOST QUADS By: Tommy Pickup General Manager/Service Technician TNT Cycles –www.tntcycles-atv.com
With the riding and racing season now upon us, also comes the other part of the “fun”… fixing all those broken parts! This month we are going to cover a problem all us quad riders have experienced before … axle bearing failure. This is an area of our quads that receives little to no maintenance and is subjected to extreme loads in many directions. It is a wonder they last as long as they do. I personally replace mine every season. Before we get started, it is important to state that this is not a job for the inexperienced. Although it is not mentally complicated, it is physically demanding. If you do not own a Service Manual, I would suggest you start there. Service Manuals contain very important information relating to torque values and picture diagrams of component breakdown. Also, when you sell your quad it is a nice thing to offer the buyer and conveys a message that you took care of your quad. Next, working on your quad can be and is dangerous. Accordingly, use extreme caution and do not work beyond your capabilities. Practice safety first and leave the hard stuff to the techs. With that said lets get started. The first place to start is by cleaning an area to work. The cleaner
the area the easier things go back together. Now before we get started, open up your bearings and place them in the freezer. The cold will shrink them making the install easer. Next we want to get the quad so the rear tires are slightly off the ground. Make sure the quad is solid and safe. You can then remove the rear wheels. To do this remove the cotter pin and the large axle nut in the center of the wheel. The easiest way to do this is with an air impact. Otherwise put the quad in gear and have a buddy hold the rear brake on. Common sizes are 24mm or 26mm. With the nut off you should be able to remove the wheel and hub as one. If the hub will not come off (because you did not grease it), you will need to remove the four lug nuts and then use a puller to remove the hub. If you never used a puller before, take it to a shop. They can be dangerous and under pressure contain loads of potential energy! After that repeat this process on the other wheel. Place each wheel out of the way and keep them on their respective sides. Keep the nuts and washers with the wheels.
PICTURE 1 Next we are ready to remove the two axle locking nuts. (see picture 1). These are the two big nuts on the axle.
Nerfs • Bumpers • Tires • Clutch • Exhaust • Intake• Engine Performance Suspension
Depending on your quad, they can be on either the sprocket side or the disc side. Sometimes they are even reverse threaded. Again, the importance of the Service Manual. Also, these are secured on with a thread locking compound and a high torque value which make it even more difficult to remove. A big adjustable might work if you do not have access to the proper factory tool. Apply the brake with the quad in first gear and break them loose one at a time. Now we are ready to remove the chain. Now if the quad is new, there is a good chance that it does not have a masterlink in the chain. In this case, simply remove the bolts that secure the driven sprocket onto the sprocket hub. Place the bolts back in the sprocket with the nuts and washers as you removed them or as the manual states are correct. Now you can simply remove the sprocket and let the chain lay on the axle. REMEMBER to install the chain when sliding the axle back in!!! Now if you do have a master link remember when you reinstall it that the open end of the clip faces the opposite the direction of your quad. Also, depending on your chain type, you might need a chain press to reinstall.

tapping one side too far and cocking the bearing sideways in the bearing housing as this could jam the bearing or worse, break the housing. Remove the large spacer inside the bearing housing. Now with the one bearing out do the same to the other side. Take some time and clean everything up with some contact cleaner. Remember to work in a well ventilated area when using spray solvents. Now it is important to have a bearing driver that fits on the outside of the new bearing race. (see picture 4). A big socket will
With that said we can remove the brake caliper. This is usually secured by two 8mm bolts. If the two big axle locking nuts were on the disc side, you should be able to slide the disc and disc hub off the axle. Now you need to find a piece of pipe that fits over the wheel hub spline but not over the axle and gently pound the axle out. (see picture 2). Now take a moment and neatly lay every piece on the ground in the order it came out. Make sure to stay organized and work neatly.

work in a pinch. Now take your cold bearings and gently tap them in place, making sure to keep them straight. After you install one side, install the spacer and then the other bearing. It is good practice to apply grease to the inside of the spacer. Then apply some grease to the seals and install them. Put a little grease on the sprocket and disc hub splines and slide the axle in, remember the chain, and slide the disc hub and sprocket hub on. Clean the big nut threaded surface on the axle Now with a long punch gently tap the and nuts with a cleaner, and apply top of the bearing. (see picture 3). Now some thread locker to the threads. move to the bottom of the bearing Install the nuts to their specified torque. and do the same. You want to avoid Install the wheels and your good to go. BY Tori Devlin On March 16, 2008 the official race season for the new series North East Off-road Championship (NEOC) was officially welcomed. All the families reunited in Millville, New Jersey on Ormond Farms. The sun was shining and the skies were clear to start off a new season. Never skipping a beat the show went on and let me tell you what a show it was. Saturday afternoon started off
Maybe history in the making as the first group of Pee Wee racers blast the start of the new NEOC H.S. Series. new series, thank you to everyone who believed it could happen. This new series is going to be complete with, live bands, movie night, pit bike raffles, and much more.
Racers line up for the late morning C class races. the events with the pit bike races. Unfortunately I had to miss this event due to a family occasion, but when I got there I soon learned how much I really did miss. It was great to see how much the kids have grown in a few months, and what they have brought to the series this season. There were 450 plus riders that showed up for this
Youth racer navigating the course at Ormond Farms. We will be using a new transponder scoring system. Each rider carries a transponder, and scoring is done by a machine picking up its signal, giving credit for the lap. Just like anything new, change can be a bit scary, but once seeing this system in use it was definitely a great investment. As the riders rolled through it was clear that this was like breathing a breath of fresh

air. This system is very similar to easy pass, and if anyone could ever remember not having easy pass you can relate. The pee wees started the morning off and boy oh boy can those little ones ride! They always say good things come in small packages and these youngin’s definitely proved it. Next were the youth and they hardly looked like they haven’t been racing for a few months? These kids pour their heart and soul into this sport and it shines through when they hit that track! Then we have the adults, what a great show this always is! Here you can see everything from Moms, Dads, Brothers, Sisters, and sometimes Grandparents racing. Just goes to show this is truly a family sport that everyone can enjoy. I would just like to say thank you once again for all the riders that showed up to support NEOC. Please check out our website at www. northeastoffroad.org. Stay tuned for an update on the rest of the season.

Getting Sideways with Cory Texter Hey Everyone,
Another week in Daytona is in the books. There were 3 hot shoe races, 1 pro-am race, and 2 GNC singles nationals, lots of racing for everyone. We even practiced the week before all this started at a track called Neeses, South Carolina. So we definitely put some laps in. First off we had the practice day at Savannah. The track was awesome, wide, dark groove. You could go so deep into the corners and it would just stick to the groove. It was just the right amount of traction. I felt great as well as a couple others. Coolbeth, Weidman, Halbert, etc. The next day was the first hot shoe of the year. At the first hot shoe of the year, there was a ton of riders. I think somewhere around 68- 450’s, 50 750’s, and like 30 pro-sports. Since it is a hot shoe, they only take 12 riders to each main event. The track looked great when we got there and then right before sun down, they soaked it! We started an hour later then we were supposed to and the track was way different. It was kinda sketchy to me, but it’s the same track for everyone. I missed the 450 main by a couple spots and I got passed by Sammy Halbert on the last lap to finish 4th in my 750 heat race, also one spot out the final. I was pretty bummed, but with a stacked heat I couldn’t afford to make a mistake, and I made one. Coolbeth ran away with the 450 final. My teammate Chris Carr won the 750 final, with Coolbeth 2nd. James Rispoli won the 450 final, and my sister Shayna finished a respectable 2nd. Next was the Volusia half mile in Florida. The track was rough, like always. I decided to only ride my dtx 450. I think I pulled a muscle in my back, because I was having back problems all day on the 750. So with not feeling so great and hardly any purse money I decided I didn’t want to beat up myself or equipment on this night. I lead my heat race, until the track started to get slick and I slipped up against the framers. I finished 3rd and a transfer into the 12 rider final. A horrible start kept me from running up front. I came from pretty far back up to 10th and some more riders were in sight. I was disappointed but that’s the way it goes. I felt great however but with only 12 lap finals in a hot shoe, there just wasn’t enough time. With a 25 lap national final however, I think I could of picked quite a few guys off before the finish. Rob Pearson won the 450 final with Jersey Jake in 2nd. Factory HD rider Bryan Smith won the 750 final and Rispoli again won a close battle with my sister Shayna in the pro-sport division. The next day I sat out because I started to get really sick. My good buddy Kevin Varnes won the 450 final. Rob Pearson won the 750 final and Shayna finally got her first win in the pro-sport division. The last hot shoe at Volusia was next. I rode my C&J 450 as well as the 750. We tried a lot of different things with restrictors on this day with the 750. Since it wasn’t a national, we figured it would be a good day to try things. After a crappy scratch heat, I came from the back row to finish 3rd in my heat race to make the 450 final. In the final, I started on the outside back row. I felt awesome and worked my way up to 4th place not far behind factory Suzuki rider JR Schnabel when the bad luck bug bit me again. My exhaust broke and my motorcycle sounded like a lawn mower. Guys blew by me and eventually I was black flagged and credited with 12th place. Bummer! JR Schnabel ended up winning the final. I felt like a podium was within reach, but that’s racing. Kenny Coolbeth won the 750 final and Shayna made it two in a row in the pro-sport division. The two days at the stadium were a crapshoot. The track was rough, slick, and dry. I always seem to struggle there, but I was going to try and change that this year. A lot of luck seemed to play a big role this year. I got on the bad end of the stick. Leading my semi the first night and pulling away when a red flag came out. Bummer! Again the bad luck got me. A crappy start the second restart left me playing catch up and I finished 2nd place, by 0.594 seconds. There were 94 riders. They take 60 to the main show, and 16 to the final. I guess you could say I was that 17th guy. Jake Johnson pulled away and won by a long way. Kenny Coolbeth was 2nd with Schnabel 3rd. The second day was like a carbon copy of the first for me. I finished 5th in my heat race and was running 3rd in my semi when JR Schnabel bumped me into the wall on the straight-away and I faded back to 12th. I ran a couple guys back down to finish 8th in my semi. Huge bummer. Way better then last year here, but still not close to what I wanted. Jersey Jake won again by a long way. Schnabel finished 2nd from the 3rd row and Bryan Smith was 3rd. Our next national is April 5th in Tucson, AZ. After Tucson we have a little bit of a break before Springfield. The TT is May 24th and the Mile is May 25th. Locally I will be racing Path Valley on Mar 29 and Trail-ways on Mar 30. I am also scheduled to race Pagoda TT on April 19th. I can’t wait for that event. It was a lot of fun last year. Hope to see everyone at these local races. Stop by and say hey! Also, check out the new website CoryTexter.com. Sign the guestbook and let me know what you think of it. American Suzuki’s
By: Dave Hoenig Red flags and rain drops were not enough to keep American Suzuki / Part Unlimited’s Jake Johnson from becoming the first rider to sweep the Daytona Double. Last year he posted a first and a second and backed that up this year with two convincing wins. It took three tries tonight to get the twenty five lap National underway and Johnson nailed the start each time. The first start was aborted when R&D Machine / KK Supply’s AJ Eslick caught a rut off turn two and fell in the middle of traffic. Eslick’s machine along with Lance & Ronnie Jones Kawasaki’s Mike Rush’s were too badly damaged to continue. The second attempt saw Scott Powersports’ Raun Wood in the hay bales in turn one, he was able to make the hurried restart as the long forecast rain showers were fast approaching.
Finishing some sixteen seconds back were Joe Kopp (Bob Lanphere’s BeavertonRenton Honda), Raun Wood, Matt Burton (RJ Performance) and Nick Cummings (Honda Pro Oils / Total Control Racing).
The third time was the charm as Johnson blasted to the lead with Deeley HarleyDavidson’s Don Taylor and Bill Werner Racing / Kawasaki’s Bryan Smith right behind. Just has he had done last night Johnson cruised to a big win, building a lead over his teammate, JR Schnabel to over five seconds at the end.
Wisconsin’s Brock Schwarzenbacher (Moose Racing / Innovative Tech) made his first National main and finished eleventh. Rogers Lake Racing’s Bryan Bigelow was the last bike running in twelfth.
Schnabel had been forced to race his way into the National via a semi after he fell while leading his heat, but a third row start was not enough to keep him off the box. Smith was able to hold on to third over the fast closing Bettencourt Honda of Kenny Coolbeth. The other Lance and Ronnie Jones Kawasaki in the main,, Henry Wiles’ finished a ways back with Buddy Pulliam Racing’s Brandan Bergen pushing him across the line.
Don Taylor along with fast qualifier Brandon Robinson (White’s Harley-Davidson / Iron Valley Harley-Davidson), Eslick and Rush all failed to finish. A slight sprinkle started to fall as the cross flags, half way mark came out. Fortunately the rains held off until the champagne party had started on the podium. Obviously after two rounds Johnson holds the points lead. He already holds an eleven point lead over his stable mate Schnabel, 46 to 35. Defending Champion Coolbeth sits just one point behind Schnabel.

was such a great trip! If you ever have the opportunity to go down to Durhamtown Plantation you are guaranteed to find something for everyone to do! On Saturday we went to the General GNCC to prepare for the race on Sunday. The track was great! Fast in the fields but a little muddy in the woods. A couple mud holes made this track challenging and many people were victims of the soft-red Georgia clay. Many District 6 youth racers competed in this race including Nick Davis, Kenny Tenner, Ethan and Wendy Jaudas, Jarrett Mohn, Tegan Temple, Deiter Willenbrock, Henry Ferreira, Mike McGee, and many more. Congratulations to everyone who raced!

What’s up? The season is finally starting to get underway as many races have already taken place. I started off my 2008 race season down south at the General GNCC in Washington Georgia. My trip started off on Tuesday night as the long 14-hour trip began. On Wednesday morning we arrived at Durhamtown Plantation. It is an awesome sportsmans resort. It offers hunting, fishing, BMX, and of course motorcycle and ATV trails. Wednesday and Thursday was the most fun I had in my life! Great weather was making the day even better as I had a blast riding and practicing with my friends. With groomed motocross and supercross tracks, and miles and miles of harescramble trails ranging from tight-single tracks to wide-open fire roads and plenty of things to play around with; including a drag strip, mud pit and a valley to ride in... you could never be bored! I rode for hours; emptying the gas cans in our trailer and having a great time. Friday was a bit muddy and Mother Nature brought rain and wind to sunny Georgia; so, my dad and I decided to do a wild boar hunt since Durhamtown Plantation has 4000 acres on which to hunt on. This

The Mark Garvey Story By Jesse Greenwalt In the early spring of 2006 racing season started back up. It started out just like the past 13 years of racing for an average guy like Mark Garvey. Mark was 16, and on that one day at the Lake Whitney Spring Classic on the 12th of March, his whole life was changed forever. I didn’t know him too well before all this happened, but believe me, I’ve heard many stories. He was the typical 16 year old motocross boy who was always either, riding, training, racing, breaking bones, or getting into trouble. I’ve watched videos from when Mark had been riding, and don’t get me wrong, he wasn’t a Ricky Carmichael Jr., but eventually, I bet he would have gotten somewhere after his long 13 years of hard work, but that dream had been broken. That day of the 12th in the 2nd moto of 250C he pulled the holeshot and was in first place, until the 3rd lap came around to the table top coming into the woods, it all came to a stop for his racing career that very moment. Mark was flown away to the John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, TX from the Lake Whitney track where he stayed for a week. They decided they needed to move him to a better hospital and one that was closer to home, in Delaware. Then they flew him in a private jet, paid for by a special donation to Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Mark broke his T5, but the injury was at T4, which is classified as a T4 para. He had surgery for two metal rods and 12 screws to be put in his back. After the surgery, he was transferred to Magee Rehabilitation in Philadelphia for six weeks, and then was going to return home for six. After that he was expected to come back for one more set of six weeks for his therapy needs. I remember him always telling me how when he was at Lake Whitney the day before, he watched Ricky James ride, another recently paralyzed rider. Soon after Mark got home from therapy, things settled down and he became more independent, he decided he wanted to build a bike just like Ricky’s. Lots of our friends and families helped a little with putting together this bike for him. Many pitched in money to help get everything he needed for the bike and Motographx put together stickers to help us raise money. Mark had actually contacted Ricky James to get some detailed information and specs to put together the bike. It took many months, shipping parts off, and everything just for it to be perfect for him. The bike consists of a modified seat for him to sit perfectly in, bars for his legs, an electronic shifter on the handlebars, which isn’t all the way finished, but will be soon! The back brake is mounted on the bars and it has an automatic clutch too, so he doesn’t have to use a foot shifter. Finally the day came that he got his first ride on a dirt bike since he was injured. It’s simply amazing watching him ride again, with all the family and friends gathered around, all of us with tears in our eyes. At the same exact time, it’s terrifying, but it doesn’t matter because you know to ride again. For him to have that that he is happy feeling of being on a bike again is just amazing. After riding for 13 years, yea you can’t just give up something you love. He came to somet out how much harder it is find o to ride being paralyzed, without being able to stand through some sections, to seat bounce every sectio jump, not being able to put that jump out for turns. Think about leg o how difficult that is, how much heart and determination it must hear take, to do what it is you love take do. to d Some may think it’s wrong to Som get back on a bike, others think it’s great to see his passion for motocross; it all depends on your opinion. No one or anything can stop him, and an what is so inspiring. Mark has that is wh Park, since its right near his been practicing at Blue Diamond MX Pa He’s been ttrying little, and He’s been doing great, and I hhouse. H ’ b i tto jjump a littl d gain i some more speed. d H wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t start racing again soon! I hope that everyone who reads this gets to experience watching him ride. It really is what life’s about, living for what you love, living your dreams, they are always within reach....you just have to want it bad enough.
Nutrition & Fitness Thru Jay’s Eyes
Spring Training As the warm season returns to our temperate area of the earth, most riders should be thinking about waking from their winter hibernation. Getting out on the bike to practice up before the racing season starts is integral to a successful season on the track. Before you even get on the bike make sure you service it properly, especially if it has sat unused for over a month. Also inspect the riding conditions of the area, and try not to ride if the ground is still frozen. Frozen ground is notorious for having little traction when cornering and much less mercy when it is contacted at speed. If you must ride when winter’s grasp still clutches at North America please consider traveling south to a warmer climate where the ground is not frozen. Motocross is much too dangerous to be attempted in unsafe conditions. Special care should be taken when first returning to the track in the spring. Make sure to stretch out very well before getting on the bike, doing this is important especially if you haven’t had the chance to get much exercise in the off season. Take it easy the first few laps around the track, and get comfortable with the bike before you start to pick up the pace. Once you have rediscovered the flow of the track with the motorcycle, the next phase of your training should begin. Endurance is one of the most important assets to posses when attending the first race of the year. If you are well matched with the competition in your class there is a good chance that it will be endurance which decides who wins and loses. Mountain biking is an excellent crosstraining sport, along with rock climbing and jogging. Doing one of these activities even just one time per week will increase your stamina, and keep your reflexes sharp. As the race weekend approaches allow a few days between it and your training sessions so you are not sore when going out to race. When caring for your body after a work out, be sure to stay hydrated and try supplementing your diet with bananas and citrus fruit. The potassium and phosphorus in bananas will help strengthen connective tissue, while the vitamin C will help to process the lactic acid build-up on your muscles. I highly advise against drinking cow’s milk at any time (before or after) a good work out. Cow’s milk contains lactose which breaks down into lactic acid in
our bodies making it harder for us to get rid of our sore muscles. This is why human are not genetically predisposed (or meant) to drink cow’s milk, because the main ingredients in it break down to a toxin which our bodies must expel. (Hence lactose intolerance) Please do your body a favor, and seek out goat’s milk or vitamin fortified soy milk. Both types have more calcium than cow’s milk, and do not contain Bovine Growth Hormone. (A chemical synthesized from petroleum and also responsible for causing various mental and physical side effects) When going out to train for the new season remember to be smart about it. Take advantage of every possible angle which could potentially give you an advantage over the competition. There are so many ways to improve your body, and mind, which will also improve your skills out on the race track. This is the perfect time of year to try new techniques that could give you new potential in the year to come.
