Hello Race Fans!
Is it here yet? Has anybody seen it? Spring is what I’m looking for, some nice bright 60 degree days. Hopefully by the time you are reading this, spring will be upon us. As I’m sitting here writing this, it is still very cold and windy and it’s even snowing. Winter came late this year but none the less it made an appearance. Anyhow, let’s get on with the race season. Motorama is behind us and featured within this issue. We also braved the elements for Round #1 of the PA State Hare Scramble Series in early February. What a success, over 350 racers came out to battle the ice and the Dutchmen course. Things are looking great as we move into the new year. There are a ton of races that you can attend this year and I’ve heard that a few of the local tracks have made some awesome course changes. As usual MRA will be out each and every weekend at a track near you. Watch for our camera and be sure to check our website Mondays by noon to catch all of the weekends racing action. Also, coming soon at www.mcracingaction.com you’ll be able to place classified ads both online and in print. What better way to “reach the racers” than to advertise your merchandise with MRA. As Always, we thank you for reading MRA. Please remember as we move through the year to support the advertisers in our pages. You can find most anything you need to have a successful race season right here in MRA. I would also like to give a special thanks to our paid subscribers. Thanks to you, MRA continues to be strong and we can move into the future. Until next time.

RACERS WANTED Attention Racers:
Team Offroadmotorsports1.com Forms Local Race Team Pro – Amateur – Novice – Mini – ATV Riders, if you need a great sponsor and are willing to help promote our dealership. Give us a call. You don’t need to be a pro racer to attract great sponsors. Have you ever tried to get help with your racing efforts and come up empty handed? Or how about this scenario, after mailing in your resume and weeks of waiting for the post man to bring you that much anticipated response, you get this. Congratulations, you’ve been sponsored, just send in your order form for our fancy sports wear and we'll give you a 20 % discount off our retail prices. Just make sure we don’t catch you wearing some other race companies t-shirt or we’ll – Blah, Blah, Blah, etc. etc.!. Hopefully you haven’t experienced these types of replies. I’m sure some of you receive a lot of great help from a lot of great companies. Unfortunately most of the good deals are reserved for the select few that are winning every weekend or for those that attend a lot of big amateur events. And in all due respect, most of us understand that racing has to be a business and if something doesn’t help the bottom line of a company, then it usually doesn’t happen. But what about the rest of us, with the rising cost of practically everything, how do we afford to keep our race bikes on the track? Fortunately, there is a local company that has stepped up to the plate and formed a local amateur race team. We are Off Road Motorsports, centrally located in the heart of AMA District 6. And yes, if you become part of our team we will expect you to promote our company, the big difference between us and maybe some other companies out there. We are willing to help you get what you need, at a price you can afford. Off Road Motorsports is looking for the everyday racer, both expert and amateur alike to take part in the newest concept in motorcycle racing in our area. In return for your support, Off Road Motorsports will work their hardest to obtain the best deals for you on all types of products that will help you keep your bike on the track We will offer 5 levels of sponsorship where we base your cost on the dealer cost of the items you need, not offer you a discount off of some type of retail price. We are going to offer opportunities to win free merchandise, we will have race team fun days and you will be able to accumulate points towards year end savings and giveaways. We are even going to give away a free Pit Bike to the team member that earns the most points until the end of the year. And points aren’t all together earned based on your race finishes. Give us a shot, we believe you'll be glad you did. Shop History Off Road Motorsports is easy to find and located in Myerstown, PA on Route 422 just east of Route 501. Team Owner, Duane Brown has been in the off road business for close to fifteen years in one aspect or the other. Duane got started as a young ATV rider and he saw a need for people to be able to get what they needed easily and affordably. Duane eventually went on to own Off Road Motorsports, an independent shop that offers pre-owned ATV’s and Motorcycles for the off road enthusiast. The shop also carries a full line of parts and accessories and has a full service shop. “We are gearing up our inventory to support our race team, we plan to have those last

minute items in stock so we can keep you on the track”. Recently Duane teamed up with Greg “Frenchie” Pamart and the idea of the race team was born. Duane was looking for a way to expand his offerings at the shop, and Frenchie, a long time racer and motorcycle enthusiast himself has always dreamed of managing a race team. The two put their heads together and Team Offroadmotor sports1.com was born.

MRA would like to feature Scott Meshy as this years Motorama Hotshot. We can only give this honor once a year obviously because The Motorama Indoor Races are held once a year and they kick off our season here in AMA District 6. We caught up with Scott and his family on Sunday hanging out in the pits and here is what we learned. On Saturday Scott was on fire, grabbing not only his heat win, but he also grabbed the holeshot in the main and went on for the win. Scott had a great day on Sunday as well, racing for all he was worth and he ended up grabbing a second place finish to cap off the weekend. Way to go Scott, excellent job. Last year was Scotts first full year racing and he ended up taking third overall in track points at Sleepy Hollow. Scotts finishes at this years Motorama were a great start to kick off the new season. 50cc racers better be on their game this year, I believe they'll all been chasing this young man around all season long. Scott, I would like to thank you for taking your time to give us a picture and we wish you and your family the best in the 2005 season. Local racers watch out, you just may be the next MRA Hotshot. RounD #1 BP promotions, Flying Dutchmen Motorcycle Club February 6, 2005 The 2005 Hare Scramble Season kicked off as usual at the Flying Dutchmen in early February. Over 350 racers came out to challenge the partially ice covered course on a bright 40 degree winters day. The crew at FDMC did a great job of getting the snow off the track for the event. Studded tires were allowed and came in handy on those slick spots, especially in the woods. In the morning youth race, Justin Frederick got out to an early overall lead and never looked back. He would go on for the 12-15 age group win as well as the overall. Bugsy Wakefield moved up to the Super Mini class this year taking the win in that division. In the afternoon bike race the racing action was intense up front. Chris Evitts got out in front early and he turned up the heat. Pro Motocrosser Ty Wallace was on hand as well as New Jersey fast guy, Tim Rizzon. The three set a blistering pace with Rizzon and Wallace swapping positions several times thru out the day. At the end it was, Evitts, Wallace then Rizzon. In the amateur ranks, several fast racers have moved up from the youth divisions this year. The 200 B class was stacked with talent, it would be another Rizzon though taking the checkers at the barrels. Chris Rizzon who had an intense battle last year for a championship in the ECEA series was your winner to kick of the PA State Series. In ATV action, local Pro Chris Borich came out to show his stuff. Borich had his share of competition with GNCC Racer Matt Smiley making an appearance. But as usual, Borich made quick work of the competition on the familiar Dutchmen course and he took home the win. Jim Bull MRA Dirt Ball, was the message of the day.

2004 R A CER o f t h e Y E A R Jerod Stoner
Name: Age: 16 Hometown: Lewisberry, PA Ride: Gas Gas 200 Class: 200 A District #: 33 Experience: Riding 13 years – Racing 9 years Favorite Food: I really like tacos Favorite Movie: I don’t watch many movies, I saw Travis in the Nitro Circus 2 last and it’s a pretty sick movie. Hobbies: I play the drums and ride my CRF 50. Sponsors: Cycle Tech, Gas Gas USA, Cumberland Kawasaki, Hebo, Spectro Oils, Scott Goggles, Ten Racing, Works Enduro Riders. MRA names Jerod Stoner “2004 RACER OF THE YEAR”. This is the first year that MRA has offered this designation and we feel that there is no better candidate than Jerod to receive this honor. Although there are many fantastic racers in our region of the country, that had many fantastic results in 2004, none have had the season that this young man has. We were going to offer a winner for both Motocross and Off Road, but Jerod's results were so outstanding that we felt he deserved this honor all to himself. 2004 was the first year for Jerod competing in an adult division and boy did he shine. At 15 years of age, Jerod jumped into the 200 B division and made his presence known from the very beginning. Jerod won his first GNCC race of the year right here in his own back yard at the Rausch Creek Race and went on to win a total of six out of fourteen rounds to clinch the overall championship. Jerod also had a fantastic year racing locally in the East Coast Enduro Associations Hare Scramble Series. There Jerod won the 200 B division and finished 7th overall in the series to be ranked AA for 2005, a designation reserved for the top ten riders in that organization. As expected, Jerod also dominated the District 6 Series and the BP Promotions PA State Series, winning the championships in both. On top of all that Jerod has a great attitude and he is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. I would like to thank
Come See The Gas Gas Line of 2 & 4 Stroke Models At:
him and his family for their time for this interview, and I would like to wish the whole Stoner family the best in the future. Watch for Jerod this year competing in the 200 A Division. He has a new ride through Cumberland Kawasaki with Gas Gas USA, and he is off to a great start already this year. Jerod took a 9th place finish in Texas and an 11th in Florida by the time of this printing, pretty respectable for a new ride racing in a new division. MRA: Jerod, can you tell us when you started riding? JS: I was three years old. My parents bought me a Suzuki 50 four wheeler that I rode the wheels off of. Then they got me a PW50 that I wouldn’t ride for about 6 months after they got it. I guess I was scared of it or something. MRA: How about racing? JS: My first year I raced motocross on a KTM 50, I was seven. MRA: Do you remember your first race? JS: I was racing my KTM 50 at the Flying Dutchmen. In practice I fell over the one jump and broke my front fender off. I finished 7th out of 8 riders. MRA: What inspires you to race? JS: The racing environment is great, it's a family thing. The whole family is in there working as a team and giving it 100 %. The people are also great at the races; I’ve met people from all over the East Coast. It’s just really fun to go race and be with everyone having a great time. MRA: Do you have any heroes or people in the sport that you look up to? JS: Yes, Ryan Rodgers has helped me a ton with racing. He lives close, so we get to ride together a lot. There have been times where he’s spent all day pushing me to go faster by doing things like staying right on my butt, which made me want to go harder and harder. Those days, he could have been out riding and pushing himself to go faster, but he helped me. I’m very fortunate to be able to ride with him. MRA: Am I correct that 2004 was your first year on a big bike? JS: Yes it was, In 2003 I did have a KX 125 that I would practice on but 2004 was the first year on the big bike full time. MRA: What class did you race in 2003 and how’d you do? JS: I was in the 100cc (12-15) class. I won my class and finished first overall in the ECEA Kids Series. I also raced the Mini Intermediate class at the GNCC’s and finished first in that class. MRA: What were your accomplishments in 2004? JS: I finished first in all of the following series in the 200 B division. GNCC, ECEA, District 6 and the PA State Series. MRA: Wow, you won all of these divisions in just your first year on a big bike? JS: Yes MRA: What will you be up to in 2005? JS: I’m not quite sure what races I'll be doing this year. I’m moving up to the 200 A class where I’m hoping to do some GNCC races. I will be racing the ECEA Series in the AA division and I’ll be old enough to race Enduros this year so I think it would be fun to try one of those. MRA: Any goals for the future? JS: I plan on racing and having fun doing it. I’m a sophomore in High School right now so I don’t quite know what I’m going to do after school is over. MRA: Is there anyone you would like to thank or promote? JS: First of all, I’d like to thank my parents. They’ve been there and supplied me with everything and supported me my whole life with everything I do. I’m really lucky to have great parents like them. Next, I’d like to thank Ryan Rodgers for pushing me to go faster and ride harder. I’d also like to thank Cycle Tech, Spectro Oils, O’Neal, Scott Goggles, Works Enduro Riders and VPE.

Mason Dixon Riding Association MDRA RACE SERIES
By Jim Bull
Racers, as you know, there are several race series around the region that you can participate in this year. Your options are great, but your time and resources may be limited. Wouldn’t it be great if we could all race full time, just hang up school and the job and go race in all of the great series that are available to us. In our area alone there are at least 6 different series that are being run, sometimes in conjunction with each other and sometimes all at the same time. Last month we featured information about the new Ultimate Motocross Championship Series that is being held, mostly north of the Maryland and Pennsylvania border. This month we’d like to fill you in on the new Mason Dixon Race Series. Just like the name describes, this series will be taking place at tracks right along the borderline between these two great states. The series will also reach into the northern tip of West Virginia and over to the new Blue Diamond facility in Delaware. In order to get the scoop on the MDRA, I contacted Rod Yentzer, owner of Doublin Gap Motocross Park and one of the founders of the series and Dave Hayes, past president of both AMA District 7 and the Happy Ramblers MC Club. Dave is bringing his experience to the table both as a racer and an administrator in the hopes of providing one of the best series available to you, the racers of this great region. In a recent conference call with both Rod and Dave I asked them to tell me about the MDRA. What I found is that both Rod and Dave, racers themselves are looking to offer the racer a better package than what may currently be available. Every promoter involved in the series is a racer or has a family member that is a racer. They all share the same passion for the sport. They want to provide a place where people can practice and race and earn awards that equal their efforts. We all know that it takes a lot of time and money to compete in the great sport of motocross and the MDRA wants to provide an environment where families can participate at their particular skill level and be rewarded well for doing it. Not that there is anything wrong with some of the series that are currently available. The MDRA just plans to take it to the next level and offer the people an alternative in 2005 and beyond. The MDRA is open to any racer that holds a current AMA membership. Racers from any of the surrounding districts may participate as long as they purchase an MDRA membership card. District cards are not required but the MDRA highly recommends that all racers purchase a district card from their home district to support both the district and to be able to participate in their respective district series if they so desire. The cost of an MDRA card is only $ 20.00 a year and it comes along with some great benefits. For starters, your card entitles you to compete at all 12 MDRA Series races as well as the practice day the Saturday before an event. There will be overnight camping at no charge. You will receive a MDRA T-Shirt and you will receive a 1 year subscription to Motorcycle Racing Action which will be covering all of the MDRA events. You will be invited to attend the Saturday Night Track Parties and the Year End Fun Day and Banquet. But best of all, you get to race at all of the great MDRA tracks and be eligible for the huge year end awards. Classes will be offered to fit everyone’s skill level. One of the things I like the most about the MDRA is their class offerings for the mini ranks. I attend over 50 races each season and the biggest
problem I see is that kids are competing against each other that shouldn’t be. The MDRA will break down the classes not only by age but by skill level as well. They will offer their own advancement system and class designation will be on the honor system. One thing to keep in mind, the MDRA is working with the local districts and they have a pretty good handle on who should be riding in what class. They will not tolerate sandbagging so please sign up for the appropriate skill level. Now, I saved the best for last. The payouts, sure we all want to race motocross to have fun, but isn’t it great when you can get something back. Let’s face it, we all like to win, and when we do we love to get the prize. The MDRA has really stepped up to the plate here. There will be over $ 20,000. in cash and awards paid out over the term of the series. Expert riders are eligible for great cash awards and amateur and youth racers will win MDRA bucks that they can redeem at the tracks and thru MDRA sponsors. There will be motorcycle giveaways and even better yet, lots of great food (sorry I like to eat), plus some of the best racing that will go down all year long. Racers your choices are many in 2005, and most are desirable. My only advice would be to look at what you are investing, and then take a good hard look at what the pay-back may be.The other thing to keep in mind may be the future. We all have to pull together to give our sport the support it needs. As racers lets support the series and tracks that are giving back to us and that have our futures in mind. To join the MDRA, you can do so at any of their events or you can log onto the websites of any of the tracks involved. You can find the MDRA on the web at www. masondixonriding.com or you can reach them by phone during the day at (717) 249-6036. You can check their complete schedule elsewhere in the pages of MRA.

Pagoda MX – Season Opener March 6, 2005
Our 2005 outdoor season kicked off this year at the Pagoda Motorcycle Club in Birdsboro, PA. Hats off to all of the club members for making this event possible. When faced with close to a foot of fresh snow just days prior to the event, the decision was made to go for it. Several club members took personal time from work to go out and tirelessly work the course to the best of their abilities to be ready for the first race of the year. Although race day left plenty of the sticky stuff to contend with, I believe all in attendance enjoyed their day. I would also like to say “way to go” to the 100 + racers that showed up to support the race. You guys and gals truly are the warriors of the sport. At a mid day riders meeting when the racers were asked, “race moto two or go home” they said, “lets race”. And race they did. I would like to say thanks to the Pagoda Motorcycle Club for staying the course and putting on the show. You can check complete event photos at mcracingaction.com, just look around the mud. Our Baja Adventure RIZZON CYCLE, INC. ECEA & D-6 Racer discounts available.
By Allen Gavlak
For a lot of riders, hearing another persons generic narration of a riding adventure is about as exciting as asking an Eskimo to write an essay on ice, so I’ll try to keep this short. We awoke at 3:00am to catch a flight to San Diego from Baltimore, but due to severe fog the night before all flights into Baltimore never made it in. The whole thing was unsettling, but after driving to Washington-Dulles and spending 20 something hours in transit, we finally arrived in Ensenada, Mexico. I had wanted to do a Baja Mexico ride and had been invited several times but it just never fit into my schedule. My friend Sam and his brother David were celebrating David’s 40th birthday and it only seemed fitting to go along with them. Plus, Mexico is a lot warmer than Pennsylvania in mid January. The Chris Haines Motorcycle Adventure company was chosen and went well beyond my expectations. Their website, http://www.bajaoffroadtours.com/ offers complete trip descriptions and a very realistic video. The first day started out a bit comical, while getting gas in the morning a guy riding a YZ125 was putting straight gas into his tank. I asked my brother Chris, “Doesn’t that thing need pre-mix?”. Moments later he added a little oil, shook the bike frantically, started it up and blasted down the street. I thought to myself, although not very accurate, I guess that would work. Day one consisted of about 160 miles of off-road riding ending in the beautiful town of San Felipe which borders the Sea of Cortez. A delicious bright and early breakfast on Day two had us heading across the Laguna Diablo, or Devils Lake. This twelve mile long dry lake bed was incredible and I have never ridden anything like it. Along another section of the trails we were photographed in front of a cactus that is said to be over 600 years old. Day two concluded with a scenic and fun ride up to Mike’s Sky Ranch. The trip there was memorable as our guide

Kent attempted to tackle a wild horse at about 55mph. He ended up being knocked unconscious and slightly separated his shoulder. He was a little shaken; but was able to continue riding. Day three consisted of a quick breakfast at Mike’s Sky Ranch then off westward to the Pacific Ocean. The dramatic Pacific coastlines made it difficult to keep your eyes on the road. My cousin Mike fell pretty hard and broke the upper arm bone, humerus. He is healing nicely but required surgery once he returned to Buffalo. Special thanks to Rich, Ken, Sara May, Damon and Brian for all their hard work and hospitality. What started out as a trip from hell, ended up being one heck of good time. I'm planning to go again and may add a few Baja Mexico surfing days to the adventure next time. GAVLAK RACING

Extreme Track Makeover Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club Press Release
March 12 and 13 marked the extreme makeover of the Happy Ramblers Motorcycle club's MX track. The ambitious project was led by Dave Hayes, a past president of the club and Bruce Lally the current president. Dave Hayes laid out the design with input from the Happy Ramblers Board, Bill Toth, Bruce Lally, Dale Macall, Nathan (Nate) Smallwood, Jeff Ridgley and Brett Hayes. Dave summed up the project: "Prior to this past weekend the single biggest project involving the racing surface was accomplished in the year 2000. I had just been elected president and the track was in serious disarray. With the help of Dave Fichter, Bill Toth, Michele Toth and a great bunch of members we resurrected it! This weekend was really different because Bill Toth and Bruce Lally had done a great job of improving and maintaining the facility for the last 3 years and all we did was concentrate on the racing surface." The project included raising the track level and adding adequate drainage to avoid water laying on the track. New sections were added to allow for more turns and to increase the overall track distance to one mile. Jumps were reshaped or completely plowed under and rebuilt. Dave clarified the reasoning behind the club's decision to rebuild or completely change the jumps. "We felt the track had become pretty stale and without a major change in five years it had become really predictable to the riders and offered no real challenge to anyone who had been there more than once! Speeds had increased dramatically and the fun factor was on the low end of the scale. So I proposed a major re-design to the board of directors that factored rider safety as the primary goal while making the track fun for everyone." The board approved the changes and now this is definitely not the same old track! After working from sunrise to sunset on Saturday and Sunday the crew finally stopped to admire the "new" Happy Ramblers. Bruce Lally was ecstatic, standing on the completely re-designed monster jump (now much smaller) near the pond he summed the weekend up: "I am really happy it turned out so well. This is exactly what I had envisioned and it looks awesome."

You Don’t Know Squat – Or Do You? By: Bob Schuler – Total Two Wheel Training Are you an Mxer that worries most about your upper body? You should be thinking about strengthening your suspension – your legs and lower back. One of the best exercises you can do for overall strength and power is the squat. It works many different muscles. Quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes are all part of the squat. It also works the lower back, hip and torso muscles. These are all the muscles you need strong to stand in the rough stuff, help you seat bounce or pre-jump on the MX track. The squat works more major muscles than any other resistance training movement. Sure, if you are going to the beach every weekend then spend your time working on your chest, arms, and shoulders. If you plan on riding then remember to work your lower body as well as your upper body. You don’t want to be one of those guys at the gym with biceps that are bigger than your quads. The larger the muscle groups the more often and at a higher intensity you can train it. I know you guys have heard a lot of reasons why you should not do squats. One, that it is bad for your knees and back, not true if done properly. First, you should have a spotter or a safety rack if you are going to lift heavy which would only be during the winter or off-season for the racer. Second, do not go lower than 90 degrees and do not bounce at the bottom. Third, keep your head up and back straight. I always pick something on the wall to focus on then as you lower yourself down it forces you to keep your head up. Fourth, remember not to pop all the way up where your knees are ready to lock out. Instead slow your movement at the top of your squat as to not over extend your knees. There are other ways to do squats if you don’t have a power rack or even barbells at home. Grab your dumb bells and get an Ab ball. Rest the ball against the wall with your butt against the ball. Roll down the wall as you go into your squat. This will not build a lot of strength but it will help with your muscle endurance. You can do really high reps and get that burn in your quads. This exercise is also helpful even if you have back issues because there is no load on your upper back or spine. If you use your mountain bike or run for training the squat will make you stronger on the hills in both of these disciplines. Remember you are not a body builder or power lifter so don’t go crazy with really insane weights. In the old days we wore belts but this is 2005. The new method is not to wear a belt in the belief that your abs and core will be stronger. You will not have that false sense of security causing you to lift heavy opening yourself up for injury. Ok. Hit the gym and get going on your squats for this season. Keep in mind that the season has already started so don’t go crazy with heavy weights. Keep it to 10 - 12 reps for your sets and save the heavy stuff for the off-season.

District 6 racer Logan Ehrets got the thrill of his young life a few weeks ago when he got to compete at the Indy Supercross in the KTM Junior Supercross Challenge. Only a handful of young racers get a shot at this each year. While Logan was there he got to participate in an autograph signing session, he took place in opening ceremonies, he got to attend a birthday party with Mike Larocco and he got lots of free stuff. KJSC racers always come home with a boat load of free gear. On top of all that, Logan got to compete on the Indy course where he brought home a 6th place finish out of 15 riders and he had his own personal mechanic. Way to go – Logan. Wow, there’s been a ton of racers from our area getting picked to compete in this prestigious event this season and there are more on the way. Keep an eye on MRA for all of the details and keep an eye on Logan Ehrets, a past D6 champion. My bet is this kid is going places. Jim Bull - MRA

KTM Junior Super Cross Challenge
Trenton makes the podium at Anaheim 3
Trentin moved up to the 7-8 50cc class this year and decided to apply for the KJSC. Needless to say he received several denial letters, until one Monday the “big” envelope arrived. Trentin was headed to California, he could not believe he would get to run the coveted Anaheim 3 track, this included the split gate and split first turns. The family packed their bags and headed west for a winter vacation. While there, Trentin toured socal’s Disneyland, Huntington, Newport, and Venice beaches, Hollywood and Beverly Hills, then it was off to the track. Trentin laid down the 2nd fastest lap time in the 1st practice and was really getting used to the KTM Pro Sr. by the 2nd practice. When it was time for the gate to fall Trentin started off in about 4th position, and by the 2nd lap you could throw a blanket over the 4 leaders. Then at the split Trentin decided to take the left side of the track which to his avail worked out nicely, two of the leaders tangled on the right side of the split and Trentin slid up to 2nd place with not enough time or track to catch the eventual winner Jose Ceja. Trentin was treated like a factory pro from the KTM staff and received many goodies from Thor, M2R, Motorex, Scott USA, and Michelin. He also got to sign lots of autographs as well as receive some from “Cowboy” Kenny Bartram, Ronny Renner, and Nathan Ramsey. Trentin really liked the whoops section of the track almost as much as the split track. It was a great experience and chance of a life time. It is something Trentin will never forget.

13th Annual Thor Parts Unlimited North East Classic Round #1 - Doublin Gap MX Park – March 19-20, 2005
Since its inception, the NE Classic Motocross Series has been the event to attend on the East Coast if you are an amateur racer looking to get noticed or to be eligible for a ton of great contingencies. In twelve years this series alone has awarded close to 2 Million Dollars in contingencies, has given away close to a quarter of a million dollars worth of motorcycles and trailers and each year pays out roughly $ 180,000.00 in factory contingencies to racers from all over the country. At the opening round this year in addition to the factory money, 5 sets of Thor gear were given away, 1 Pro Circuit Pipe and a pair of Alpine Star Boots. On top of all that, race sponsor Cumberland Kawasaki from Carlisle, PA gave away a brand new Kawasaki KX 125. All you needed to do was enter one class and you were eligible to win. Racers travel from all over to compete and Round # 1 was no exception. Colton Harrison and Ryan Blizzard came down from New York and made their presence known, the Jersey contingent, Lettieri, Desiderio and Blessing came to town and set a blistering pace and Jacob Grove, Chad Wages and Todd Wilcom traveled from south of the Mason Dixon Line to represent the state of Maryland. As far as the PA riders go, well they put on a pretty good show themselves. In the expert divisions, Damien Plotts traveled all night long after an 18th place finish at the Orlando Supercross to win the 250 A division. Casey Clark, Jeremy Cook and Derrick Wile all took home wins over the two day weekend as well. The racing action was hot, the track was perfect and the weather was prime. Doublin Gap had made some sweet track changes prior to this event adding a step up jump coming out of the pond section followed
up by a huge table top jump. Other small changes were made around the track and the expert whoop section was added on Sunday for the A riders. MRA was there and we posted over 1000 photos from the weekends event, you can view them on our website at: www.mcracingaction.com The rider turnout was huge for this event so we didn't have near enough room to post all results here, please log onto www.doublingap.com for complete event results. 35th Daytona Supercross
Daytona International Speedway – March 11, 2005 Photos By Allen Gavlak Chad reed wins his second Daytona Supercross in as many years while earning his 20th AMA Supercross win. Reed led every lap of the 250 main with Ricky Carmichael right on his tail, Carmichael was looking to set a Daytona Supercross record of 5 wins. Daytona is known to be the longest and toughest track of the season, to win this event is one of the most prestigious honors in the sport, to repeat is even more of an accomplishment. At times RC challenged Reed and on lap 17 while attempting a pass thru the whoop section, RC Bromley Suzuki's – Barry Carsten at Daytona.
got squirrelly and ended up going down on the asphalt section of the speedway. RC was able to re-mount quickly but had gotten some "Honda Banners" tangled in his rear wheel and was unable to mount a charge. This gives reed his second win of the season with Carmichael still firmly in the points lead. The 125 main was almost as exciting as the 250. The tough Daytona course was chewing up riders left and right. Early in the race a huge pile up took out heavy hitters, Grant Langston and Davey Millsaps. Both men would crash again trying to get back in the mix and this left the door open for Josh Hansen and Josh Grant. The two would battle till the end and they took each other out over the finish line jump while getting the white flag. Hansen would get going first to take the win with Grant recouping for second. The win gives Hansen the series points lead over Langston by two points. Jim Bull MRA

Jake Johnson Lands Suzuki, Daytona ST Victory Story courtesy of Cycle News
Prior to the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship season-opening Daytona Short Track, there had been a lot of hype surrounding Jake Johnson’s move to Team Suzuki Flat Track. After the main event at Daytona Municipal Stadium was over, Johnson proved that he could live up to it. The 20-year-old New Jersey rider made history by becoming the first man to win an AMA Grand National flat track race aboard a Suzuki when he piloted his short track-framed RM-Z 450 past reigning AMA Flat Track Champion Chris Carr on lap five and sped to victory. After two restarts - the first for Nick Cummings, who cart-wheeled violently after tagging the hay bales on the outside of the back straightaway, and the second after Johnny Murphree did the same thing on lap two of the second attempt at completion - Carr took the holeshot, followed by Mack Daddy Racing’s Henry Wiles and White’s Harley-Davidson’s John Raun Wood. Johnson was sixth off the start, but he railed under two riders in turns three and four to run fourth on the opening lap. Johnson then blasted underneath Wood for third place on lap three to take second place. Johnson was running a lower line than Carr, and he used that shorter traveled distance to catch the fleeing Carr, the two pulling away from Wiles early. Johnson then caught Carr on lap five, drew alongside the champ and then passed him for the lead between turns three and four to take a lead that he would not relinquish. Johnson crossed the finish line with an official margin of victory of 1.094 seconds, though it was actually closer to 3.4 seconds. Carr finished second, with Wiles third, the Michigander barely holding off hard-charging Team Suzuki Flat Track’s Kevin Varnes at the stripe. Jones Powersports KTM’s Kenny Coolbeth was fifth. Now remember I said that this antiquated design is still with us. The sad thing is that it is being used in bikes being ridden by riders who have little or no idea that what they've got, frankly sucks. These are the mini riders. Now when I say mini riders I'm not talking about all minis as most of the new 80/85's do now come with cartridge style forks although some of these can be vastly improved upon i.e CR85. The KX60/65, smaller model KTM's and others however are all damper rod type.

There is a product that we install quite often that will change a damper rod system to one that performs like a cartridge and will vastly improve the ride and control of the bike. I guess I'm addressing this article to the parents of the kids who are trying to compete on this sub-standard set up as you are the ones who have to monitor the performance of your son or daughters bike as they are too young to yet know what to expect from their bikes.

I had first hand experience with this modified set up just a few years ago. Prior to that I had installed many but being a little too big for a mini had never been able to do a back to back comparison. Well when I got my latest street bike I got re-introduced to damper rod forks which I immediately remembered were about as dynamic as a dunked biscuit. After a couple of months of dodging pot holes and crawling across railroad crossings I opted for the modified set up and was completely blown away by the difference. To say it was night and day would be an understatement. I now actually hit potholes on purpose so I can feel the damping work to soak it up.

From the time that I began racing bikes and probably well before, until about 1986, the internal workings of forks changed very little. This type of fork is referred to as a damper rod fork. I want to talk to you about this set up as it is still around today and can be vastly improved upon. The major problem with damper rod forks is that they generate damping force (resistance to flow) by pushing oil through fixed holes. The shortfall to this is that at low speeds where the fork is moving slowly they have no damping at all as the oil can move quite freely. Then at high speeds, for example when hitting a square edged bump, they have way too much damping. The forks will feel almost solid as they cannot move oil quickly enough through their damping holes. Cartridge forks on the other hand move oil through orifices that vary in size depending on the speed at which the fork is trying to compress so you can achieve optimal damping characteristics throughout the range.
Any bike equipped with damper rods can easily and quickly be upgraded to perform as good as or better than anything else available. I urge you to find out what you are competing or riding on then look into getting it done. A large percentage of street bikes still use damper rods as do about 95% of all Harleys of which we have done quite a few over the past year. Everyone who has it done says the same thing, "I wish I'd known about this years ago". If you are curious and would like to investigate this for your racer or street or trail bike please give us a call we'd be happy to clue you in. Till then, hang on tight.

MRA WINTER SUBSCRIPTION PROMOTION WINNER – LES WARFIELD Name: Les Warfield Age: 8 years Hometown: Pasadena, MD Ride: KTM 50 KTM 65 Classes: 50 7-8 65 7-9 District #: 501 Experience: racing 4 years
Yes, most of the time you can find MRA for free at one of your local race tracks. We do ask if you can, to buy an $ 11.00 a year subscription to have MRA home delivered to your door. You may ask, why should I pay for something if I can get it for free? Our answer is, to help support racing in our area. The more subscribers we have, the more advertisers we can attract. The more advertisers we have, the bigger the paper gets. The bigger the paper gets, the more people we can put in. For one, it is very cool to be in a race publication, but best of all it means potential sponsors for you. We thank you all for reading MRA, whether you can subscribe or not. But here's the big news, every year we do a subscription drive and give away something really cool to one lucky winner. This year Rossini Racing Products and MSR Racing stepped up to the plate and made it really special. Les Warfield from Pasadena, MD is our winner. Not only does Les get great racing action delivered to his door 10 times a year, Les went home from the track last weekend with a complete set of MSR Race Gear. Les was outfitted from head to toe, yes helmet, boots, chest protector and everything in between. On top of all that, Les gets a one day MX School with Pro Racer Ty Wallace and a complete suspension job from Rossini Racing Products. Wow, what a deal. MRA would like to thank both RRP and MSR for participating in this yearís promotion. We would like to give a special thanks to Ty Wallace for putting this all together. And to all that support us through paid subscriptions and for everyone that signed up during the promotion. You can subscribe to MRA at our website, www. mcracingaction.com or you can clip a form from any copy of MRA. You can also do what young Les Warfield did; you can get a yearly subscription to MRA by joining the new Mason Dixon Riding Association. Now, Les gets to ride in a great series, he won all kinds of cool stuff and he gets to read about it each month in the pages of MRA. Jim Bull MRA
