Happy August, it's time to get down and dirty, hot and dusty, so get out a 55 gallon drum of drinking water (if you can find it) and lets go racing. That's right it's been hot and dry, make sure you take extra precautions when you go to the track.Take along plenty of patience and your own water for drinking and cleanup.August is also Loretta Lynns Time. The best amateur riders in the country are headed to Tennessee to duke it out for the title of "Amateur Champion". Lets pull together and cheer on all of the local riders that made it. We're also half way through the D-6 point series. There are 8 events left where riders can earn D-6 Bucks good towards admission/sign up fees at all D-6 MX tracks. We wish you all the best of luck, and remember August is a hot one - Let's all work together to make it a great racing month.

My First Race at Sleepy Hollow on a TTR 125L. When I was sitting at the line getting ready for practice all I was thinking was to take it easy and not to crash. When I pulled out onto the track I just relaxed and took it easy and got used to the track. It was awesome. It was so fun it seemed like 2 or 3 minutes, but it was really a 15 minute practice. It was so muddy that they had to block off a few corners. Because of it being so muddy I only got to ride about 10 minutes of the practice, but that was OK with me. For the first moto I just thought the same thing and did great. The moto was 4 laps long. When I pulled off the gate, I did a huge wheelie. I got 6th off the start and held my position and finished 6 place out of 12 riders. In the 2nd moto I got off the gate good again. I got a good start but I got lapped and had to take the outside line on one of the corners and got into the ruts and crashed. I dropped back to 9th place and held that position for the rest of the race. I finished 8th overall. I had a fun day.

My name is Alyssa Savidge and I am 10 years old. I started racing in May 2001. This year I have a TTR90 and I race the TTR/PW class at Sleepy Hollow and Flying Dutchmen. Usually I finish in the top 5 overall; but, I have been practicing and am getting faster. On June 23rd at Flying Dutchmen I had a good start the 1st moto and finished 2nd. In the 2nd moto I got a good start again and was right behind the leader. I was trying real hard to find a good line to pass him; he went down, and I got the lead! I never led a moto before and I was real nervous; but, excited too. I tried to ride faster than ever before so I could win. The moto seemed like it lasted forever and I was glad to see the white flag; but I was even happier when I saw the checkered flag and I knew that I had won my 1st moto and had the overall 1st too. My mom and dad met me at the finish line and we celebrated my first victory! Now I want to win at Sleepy Hollow, too! Way to go Alyssa! Keep up the great work and can't wait to cover your win at Sleepy Hollow. Jim Bull and Staff, MRA

Performance R eport Will suspension re-valving really make a difference in my bikes performance? The motocross world is made up of people of all different shapes, sizes, and abilities. From the 150 lb. Pro to the 250 lb. C rider, or the 180 pro to the 120 lb C rider, and you may see them all riding the same bike. For the pro the question of valving isn't even thought about. The factories spend hours and hours testing suspensions for different tracks. The suspension you see on your favorite pro's bike at Mt. Morris isn't the same one you see at Southwick. Unlike the factory riders the average rider doesn't have the money or resources to re-valve their suspension for each individual track. The one advantage that the local rider does have is that most local tracks have relatively the same soil conditions and designs. As a local amateur you won't be seeing a large variety of dirt conditions and be jumping from a supercross style track to a fast outdoor style track from week to week. One mistake many people make is to think that changing their springs will help them if they are bottoming out or feel as if their suspension is to soft. It is important to remember your spring's primary job is to set the ride height for your bike, and help control rebound. Springs have no natural dampening abilities. Springs do help with the compression aspects of your suspension, but only to a small degree. The rest is left up to the shim stacks that make up your valving. As far as valving goes, the factories try to suit the masses. The only problem with that is there very rarely are two riders alike. Even if you are the same size as your buddy he/she may still prefer a different style valving. Re-valving a suspension consists of changing a series of shims that will adjust the flow of oil through your forks or shock. The factories pick a middle ground and set up their suspensions in hopes that the average guy can ride it. Usually when someone spends four or five thousand dollars on a new bike, they want it to work well for them. Getting your suspension to work well for you will almost always require some sort of re-valving. Remember very few bikes that are sold actually see a racetrack, but those that do, have riders that want the best from their equipment. There are many reputable suspension companies in the country as well as right here in our area. What a rider should look at is does the shop have experience and a thorough understanding of the suspension components. Also look and see if the person or people that are doing the work are riders. This is one of the advantages VPE has over some other companies. Fred still rides and races almost every week. By still racing Fred sees the changes in the bikes from year to year, and rides them to see how they are affected by valving changes. Fred has a very good understanding of how bikes work and how a certain suspension adjustment will affect them. VPE also has pro and amateur riders that are continuously testing and helping to update our suspensions. Another thing that will change the way your suspension works is, what the conditions that you
ride in are. A person that buys a new MX bike and expects to ride it in hare scrambles or enduros, most likely won't be happy with the bikes performance. A pro rider won't be able to take a stock bike and race a supercross. When you use your bike in one application or another your forks and shock will react differently because of valving, thus your valving should be personalized for you. When you go to a suspension shop be sure they ask you what tracks you are riding, how much you weigh, what class you ride in, and what type of riding you do most. If the shop doesn't ask you those simple questions you better pick up your suspension and walk out. It is not difficult to re-valve suspensions, but it does take lots of experience and knowledge to re-valve a suspension properly. Suspension parts are expensive, and also have a lot to do with you being able to ride safely, it is not something someone should try in their basement or garage to save a few dollars. Re-valving your suspension will give you better control and also allow you to go faster by letting you feel more comfortable jumping and getting on the gas sooner and braking later in acceleration and braking bumps. The two basic areas of suspension are compression and rebound. Compression is the speed and force required to compress your shock. Compression is something that can change from rider to rider. It all depends on what that rider is comfortable with, and the way they want their bike to feel on the track. Rebound is how fast your shock returns to its ride height after landing from a jump or hitting bumps. Rebound is figured out using a controlled formula that is dependent upon the riders weight and type of track they are riding. So while you and your friend who weigh about the same amount will have similar rebound shim stacks in your bike. The chances of you both wanting the same type of compression setups in your bikes is pretty slim. Controlling and adjusting these to areas of your suspension are what will make it work. Like I stated earlier, when you buy a bike with intentions to race it, it is rarely valved to allow you to ride at your optimum potential. The first thing most people do when they buy a new bike is to buy new pipe and silencer or get motor work done. In reality the best thing for them to do is to get the suspension re-valved. Like I have stated in the past it doesn't matter if you have a bike with tons of horsepower, if your suspension doesn't work you won't win a race against a guy with less horsepower and a properly valved suspension. Motocross isn't a drag race, and you have to look at getting your bike to work well as a complete packaged instead of just concerning yourself with how fast you can go on a straight away. Getting your suspension re-valved will definitely be an improvement you will notice on the track, and will allow you to become a better rider. By: Dean DeTurk Next Month:

Round 9 of 17 - June 29, 2002 Evansville Raceway, Berwick, PA A.H.R.M.A. - American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association, what a group of dedicated individuals. I call them Iron Men, Gladiators, Crazy, whatever term you want to use these guys are something else. Here's a group of motorcycle racers ranging in age from 20 something to .......... infinity, I love the 60+ Expert Class, that's years,,,, not CC's. These guys take 30 year old MX bikes (most of the time), I saw a guy racing an old Triumph Bonny 650 with a set of aftermarket shocks on the rear (that's a street bike for those of you that don't know), with 2 point something inches of rear wheel travel and race it on a National level track like Evansville, and they all walk around smiling saying, "You know this is the best track in the country." The A.H.R.M.A. organization based out of Tennessee, is a group that is 5,500 members strong, they race in all types of motorcycle events around the country. There
were a 185 riders at the National, some from as far away as Arizona. The track is a one and a half mile course that was partly designed by Rick Johnson back in the 80's. In fact, the National caliber of the track brought Jeff Ward, Bob Hannah, and Rick Johnson here to practice for the 1987 MX Des Nations. They also have a separate Supercross style track to race quads on Saturday nights under the lights. Evansville's next event is August 3rd, the scenery is beautiful, the facility is well maintained, and they sell a killer pit roast beef sandwich. For a great day of racing, I recommend heading North to Berwick. – Jim Bull, MRA

Riding Tips for the Serious Racer HOLESHOTS WITH REACTIVE SUSPENSION, INC. By Andy Fleck & Al Carr
OK, the good news is you just exited the first turn and the only thing in front of you is clear track. The bad news is there's a whole crowd of guys behind you that want that view for themselves. Whats a racer to do? First thing, remain calm. Too many racers get a holeshot only to throw it away on the first lap because they ride way over their heads BREATHE !! Don't tense up. Tension will cause you to hang on too tight which is shortly followed by the always entertaining Arm-Pump. If you can avoid these things you can focus on the first lap. This is not the time to make a mistake. A mistake on the first lap can cost you a bunch of positions because the field hasn't had time to spread out., so concentrate. Every straight on the track is basically a drag race. Exiting a corner with more speed than the next guy is just like getting a rolling start so obviously we want to carry as much speed through the turns as possible. This means we want to use the fastest line right? Not necessarily. On the first lap you will invariably have riders breathing down your neck. Taking a fast outside line will leave the door open for a rider to get inside you. If he attempts this he won't do it with the intention of making a gentlemanly pass. No, more than likely you will be the victim of a block pass. All he has to do is get in your way on the exit and you'll have to back off or change lines which will cost you time and probably a position. By the time your moto has started you should be familiar with all the available lines. The best way to do this is when you aren't riding the bike or working on it make time to get out to the track and watch, not just pracrice but the races before and after yours. Watch faster riders to see what lines they are using. If there is a section of track you feel is giving you trouble go check out what everyone else is doing there. Maybe they're having the same trouble or maybe you'll see something you can use. Check out how the track is changing. A berm that was the hot line for you in practice may have been shoved so far outside that its useless, and the last place you want to find this out is when you are leading. Also pay close attention to the track boundaries. By this I mean what defines the edges of the track. Most tracks use car tires to define the edges of the track. Some riders don't take notice of this
they define the track by the tire tracks of the other riders or the ground that has been disced. I bring this up because I clearly remember a race years ago in which my younger brother, #1 expert rider at the time, was competing. Before practice we went out to walk the track as we did at every race whether it was our first time there or our fiftieth. The track had been cut out of a field of long grass so if you didn't look closely you might think that the tracks edges were defined by the tall grass but actually the track had been laid out with tires but when they ran the mower around the track they were as much as 5 feet away froim the tires in some corners so many of them were hidden from sight. In the first moto he got a second place start behind the one rider who could possibly have beaten him but knowing exactly where the track edges started and ended he was able to make a quick pass and go on to win the moto. I think walking the track is invaluable as you can pick up on a lot more detail walking as opposed to riding it. You are too focused on what's in front of you on a bike to notice details that could help youduring the course of a moto. Oh and if you do find something that could be useful in the moto don't use it in practice unless you want everyone else to know about it. Every corner has at least two lines. You must develop a feel for which line through any given corner will carry the most speed while minimizing passing opportunities for the guys behind you. Invariably the best line will be the roughest simply because so many riders have used it. This is the line you will have to use to protect your lead. And while I have your attention I'm going to share a little known fact.... Suspension Fluid lasts 20 hours! I mention this now because these rough lines you have to use are the ones that will bring out the shortcomings of a neglected suspension. Every new bike using Kayaba or Showa suspension should have the suspension serviced shortly after the bike has been broken in. Whether you choose us or another reputable suspension tuner, get it done. The difference is like night and day. Believe me, when you're trying to protect your lead you'll thank me every time you have to use that hacked up line. Finally I would like to touch on the mental aspects of this subject. I have known riders who when they got the holeshot went backwards, but when they got a bad start could charge through the pack and win. Some riders can't win from the front. Bob Hannah (who could win from anywhere) was one of the all time greats at passing, getting to the front and continue charging. Years ago when I was involved with Bob prior to the '86 USGP at Unadilla I asked him how he maintained that drive. He said he always imagined one more rider ahead of him just around the next corner. In essence he chased a ghost, but this helped him maintain his focus and keep pushing. Focusing on catching and passing is more productive than worrying about what's going on behind you. Racing is as much mental as it is physical so you have to train your mind to perform as well. So when you get that holeshot don't dwell on whats going on behind you, just be aware and concentrate on the job at hand. Pick your lines, commit and hit them as fast as you comfortably can. If you get passed, learn from it. What did you do wrong? What did the other guy do right? Don't forget it and next time you'll be the one doing the passing. Next Month: Jumping techniques

The 1st Rule of Two-Stroke Performance:
More Air = More Power Only maximum air intake, correctly
accelerated and distributed into the crankcase can deliver maximum power.
The Boyesen Guarantee Every Boyesen product comes with a money back guarantee. If you are not completely satisfied with any Boyesen product, return it for its full refund.
An Intake Valve the Size of Your Fist Delivers Air with the Power of a Tornado To maximize airflow and release the hidden power in your race nike, replace your stock intake valve with a Boyesen RAD Valve. Integrated into the seamless, tenzalloy chamber is a quadrant of aerodynamic directional dividers. This patented, dyno-proven system power channels the charge evenly for instant, explosive movements of air at velocities of up to 500 MPH. Intelligently controlled by a set of Pro Series Reeds, you’ll get maximum flow velocity across the entire RPM range, and at all throttle settings. Each Boyesen RAD Valve is unique — tailor-made to a single model, year and displacement. While other aftermarker valves might change flange sizes or bolt patterns, they’re basically generic — and require you to irreversibly cut your intake boot to install! But with the RAD Valve, there are no compromises in power, no modifications needed. A true, bolt-on power boost: no kidding, no cutting.

Well here I am reporting to you about the results of the "First Race"...... And I have to say I wasn't even there that day to see Trevor race. It was a pretty exciting day though,,, I don't think Trevor got any sleep the night before. The guys left early that morning to head up to Sleepy Hollow so they could get there in plenty of time and to get pumped up for the race day ahead. Although I was unable to be with Trevor at the races that #11 MRA Sponsored Trevor Bull day, my heart and spirit were with him constantly. We kept tabs with each other during the day with the cell phone. He was having a blast. He finished both moto's without injuries, (thank God), and I was able to relax and enjoy his excitement with him. He had a real great day and the thrill of his first race will always be etched in his mind. At least for riding his TTR125,,,, now about his KX85,,,,, that was his 2nd race, and I DID see that one,,,,,, Of course I held my breath the entire time he was out on the track,,,, The KX goes much faster than his TTR,,,, there was more of a 'thrill' for Trevor though,,,, but that's racing.
