Thank You: Future goals: To go to Loretta’s
Storm Sheckells from Baltimore, MD is the latest addition to the now almost famous Holeshot Hotshot society. Our list of riders within this group continues to grow by leaps and bounds. There are so many Hotshots racing the tracks of our region that the society is about to explode. Last year we featured Storm’s cousin Sam and we’ve been keeping an eye on Storm ever since. Storm has really come alive this year. He is racing two bikes in two different divisions and he has definitely started to find his groove. Storm has been pulling holeshots at tracks both North and South of the Mason Dixon Line. We saw him out front at Mountaineer last month. We then went to Doublin gap and saw him pull 4 holeshots in 4 motos there, wow. Then we went to Happy Ramblers at the D6 Points race and saw him grab the holeshot there. This kid is on fire and we suspect it won’t be long until he reaches his goal of making it to Lorettas. Storm has a great list of Sponsors and fantastic support from his family. He practices regular and attends the MX Schools at Doublin Gap whenever he can. Add this in with his great riding ability and his will to succeed and it’s a recipe sure to be a winner. We wish Storm and the whole Sheckells Race Team the best of luck and be sure to watch out next month, who knows, you just may be the next MRA Holeshot Hotshot. Jim Bull MRA

MDRA HOTSHOT Name: Cory Gilliam Event: MDRA Race Series Age: 8 Hometown: Thurmont, MD District #: 217 Ride: KTM 50 Pro Senior / KTM 65sx Class: 50 (7-8) B / 65 (7-11) C Experience: 2nd year racing Hobbies: Baseball, Basketball Fav. Food: Pizza Fav. Racer: MX - Ricky Carmichael , Freestyle - Travis Pastrana Sponsors: Summit Construction, JT Motorsports, Brother Cody, Mom and Dad.
Thanks to: Brian Blettner and Rick Runkles Cory Gilliam from Thurmont, MD is the most current MDRA Hotshot. Now don’t get me wrong, Cory is good but we could probably fill up a couple of issues of MRA with all of the Hotshots that are starting to emerge from this organization. Who knows, we might even need to do a year end MDRA Hotshots Special Edition for all of the young racers who are earning their wings in the MDRA. But thats a story for another day, lets get on to young Cory Gilliam. We first noticed Cory a few rounds back when he was racing at The Landing MX. Cory’s dad Keith, a first year racer himself ordered a photo from us of Cory doing a major jump at the Landing on his 50. Well we investigated a little further and found out that not only can Cory really launch his little orange KTM off those mondo jumps, he also pulled down the first win of his career that day. Matter of fact, we also found out that Cory is relatively new at the sport of motocross and that he is progressing at a fantastic rate. Cory started riding not long ago on a Suzuki JR50 around his home in Thurmont MD. It wasn’t long that him and his dad were at the KTM dealer picking up a couple of race bikes. Cory’s first race was at the Baltimore Arenacross, wow what an introduction to the sport. Cory did well there and he rode a few motocross races last year in the D7 series. It was over the winter when the Gilliams saw the MDRA Series forming that they decided to get serious about the sport. Corys dad Keith liked the locations of the tracks and after a few rounds he felt that the series was very well organized. Cory is currently sitting in fourth place in the 50cc (7-8) B class in the series points and he is even on the board after only one race on his 65, 38th out of 56 riders. Watch out for this young racer from MD. I believe after he gets a few races under his belt on that 65 he’ll be a real force to be reckoned with. I also believe that he has a very bright future with the MDRA . As far as his dad Keith goes, well we’ll get him up to speed (just kidding). It’s great to see so many families, racing as families. One more thing, watch out next month. Who knows, you just might be the next MDRA Hotshot.

back mountain harescramble Round #6 • PA State Harescramble Series • Photos by T.S. Photos
BP Promotions went to Back Mountain for Round # 6 of the PA State Series in late June. What a day, temps in the 90’s with some of the worst humidity we’ve had all year. I would like to give a big thumbs up to all the racers who entered this race, let alone finished it. As always, Back Mountain is one of the favorite races of the series and it’s been a while since we could race here so everyone was anxious. Some of your winners on the day included Mason Evitts and Walter Bond in the 50cc classes. Douglas Allen won the 201-Open A race with Thomas Cichon taking home the Super senior win. In ATV racing action Rob Hertz won the Open A class with Austin Findley grabbing the checkers in the 70cc division.
The State Series has a break coming into August but Back Mountain has Round # 9 of the State Series scheduled for September 11, 2005. Mark your calendars now, it’s sure to be a good one. And please remember, to check out all of your Hare Scramble racing action log on to www.mcracingaction.com. Tom Simpson has been out there all year snapping 100’s of photos at each one of your events. If you see Tom let him know you appreciate it, a hand shake or a slap on the back can go a long way. We’ll see you at the Foot of Mountain on Labor Day Weekend. Jim Bull MRA

This month MRA would like to feature the Father and Son Race Team of Raymond and Andrew Szymczak from the Eastern Pa area. I know we usually feature some young hotshot that is tearing up the world of Hare Scramble racing. But we’ve learned over the years that Hotshots come from all age groups and racing genres. I believe that the Szymczaks are perfect examples of what hot shots should be and they could be terrific role models for all of the young hot shots out there to follow.
Although I’ve never met either one of them was competing without a camel pack. The Landing MX – September 11, 2005
Attention Racers:
On Sunday 9/11/05 The Landing MX is hosting The MX For Life Ride at their facility in Easton, MD. The Ride for Life is a 10 hour MX ride to remember all of our fellow Americans that were lost in the 911 attacks against our country. Proceeds from the ride will go to benefit the Children’s Hospital Foundation for Pediatric Cancer Research. This is a great cause and it allows us as a Motorcycling community to give back to a group of kids that really need it. If you have an open schedule that day, please form your team and head to The Landing to support this great effort. If you can’t make the ride there are many other ways that you can help. Below, please read the press release from David Segal, owner of The Landing MX and for complete details log onto their website at www.thelandingmx.com . Jim Bull – MRA

2005 Race Schedule
Sept. 11th
We are very excited to announce the first annual MX for Life Ride for pediatric cancer research. This ten hour marathon motocross event will be held at The Landing MX on Sunday, September 11th for Children’s National Medical Research Center in Washington D.C. This facility is the fastest growing cancer research facility in the country. All proceeds of this event will be donated to the research center. The great thing about the center is that ninety cents of each dollar goes to true research. That’s outstanding considering that most organizations average only about 40 percent. This is also 100% tax deductible ( 501-C-3 ) and a great way to support these children, our community, and our love to help each other. Your donations and gifts are what will get the job done. We have put together our guidelines as far as the event: team criteria, rules, and other information for the teams involved. Teams entering the relay event have a cost of a $450.00 donation. These fees can be paid by donations of any person, persons, business or whom ever. The fee is 100% tax deductible. All entry fees go to the foundation. A team must consist of 4 riders. You may have 5 if one is a female. Each rider must complete a minimum of 15 laps in the 10 hour period. The combined age of your team must be a minimum of 50 years of age and can not exceed the combined age of 120 years of age. Each team is required to complete the 10 hour ride to be eligible for awards. There will be prize give aways as well as awards for top teams in several categories. For example: The team that raises the highest dollar amount in donations; the team that does the most laps in the 10 hour relay, etc. We will have prizes for all kinds of other things. Please help us support this in any way possible with your tax deductible gifts and donations. We are already getting support for our silent auction from professional riders like Travis Pastrana, Tyler Evans, Paul Carpenter and many others. This is not limited to the motocross Industry. We have received gifts from Gatorade, Bam Margera, One Industries, Imperial Limousine, and others. Our contact person at Children’s is Marian Broadsky. If you have any questions about

mountaineer raceway Round #6 • MDRA Race Series • Photos by MRA
Hot was the story of the day, and not only the racing. I’m sure that June 26, 2005 will go down in history as one of the muggiest days ever in the history of the MDRA. And that’s saying something because I believe that the MDRA is going to be around for a long time. Mountaineers second and final round of the series again brought over 500 racers to their facility in the hills of West Virginia. The MDRA racers are dedicated and their results are starting to show. In the expert divisions, Kevin Brodsky made his presence known. Brodsky swept both motos in the 125 A class to take the overall and the points for the day. Newcomer to the MDRA, Aaron Day showed up and did the same in the 250 A division. Brodsky put up a fight there as well, but Day took home the win.
In novice racing action the gates were full; Mountaineer had to run three gates of 125 C racers to get it done. Bryan Bird, Brad Presgraves and Ross Latimer took home the honors. And in 85 (12-15) C racing action Joshua Fisher from Hanover, PA gets the win. The MDRA heads into Pennsylvania in the month of August. Both Doublin Gap and Happy Ramblers will be hosting their second rounds of the series. That means Saturday practice days with evening BBQ’s for all. If you’re already a member, you know what I’m talking about. If not, check their schedule here in MRA and come give it a try and see why it’s the fastest growing series around. Jim Bull MRA
The MDRA heads into Pennsylvania in the month of August.
David Wingate leads the MDRA Series Points in the 85cc 12-15 C division.
Garrett Arminger (201) goes high on the pass over Heather Snyder (236). Logan Hayden soars to the win in the 85cc 12-15 A class. Aaron Day joins the MDRA and sweeps the 250 A division.
Jeffrey Anderson chose the MDRA to compete in his first race ever.
Kelly Snider lands the big double on his 65cc machine on the way to victory - wow !!
Ken Porach finishes 8th in the 25+ A division. Kevin Brodsky goes 1-1 for the 125 A overall.
Jacob Diana races to a third place finish in 60cc 7-11 A racing action.
Conti RX50 hold numerous titles in Europe and now they’re ready to do it in the USA.

Sipes Rocks Northeast Regional
2005 AMA Air Nautiques Amateur National Motocross Championships • Northeast Regional Qualifier By Jim P. Sanderson BINGHAMTON, NY, JUNE 25-26, 2005 Justin Sipes joined over 500 of the best amateur motocross riders from the east coast and beyond as they took to the hills of the Broome-tioga Sports Center for the northeast regional 2005 AMA Air Nautiques Amateur National Motocross Championships Regional Qualifier. Sipes topped the podium of the 250cc Open B Stock Class and is headed to Hurricane Mills, Tennessee the first week of August to compete in the biggest and most competitive Amateur Motocross Championship on the planet. In the 250 Open B stock class, there were two qualifiers. The top 18 of each division would use their scores as their first moto and the subsequent second and third motos were full gates of 40 riders. Adam Blessing led the start of the first division qualifier followed by Ren Jolly, Chad Bunch, Kyle Glass and Chad Rosselli. Jolly took the lead just before the start of the second lap. Marshall Hurd came charging through the pack after a poor start and eventually worked his way to runner-up by the checkered flag. Jolly took the win followed by Hurd, Blessing, Glass and Broc Streit. Michael Bierschied led the start of the second division 250 Open B stock qualifier followed by Mark Lindsay, Jordan Marlin, Anthony Roth and Joe Pinkham. Lindsay had the point by the second lap and took the checkers with a three second lead. Pinkham, Justin Sipes, Rashidi Kerrison and Bierschied rounded out the top five. Jon Taylor led the start of the second moto. In tow were Hurd and Glass. When the top five emerged from the front rhythm section, the top five were Taylor, Glass, Blessing, Hurd and Jolly. Glass took the lead on lap two, relegating Taylor to second. Blessing, Hurd, and Jolly all advanced after Taylor went down. Kerrison rounded out the
top five. Glass hung on to take the second moto win with a three second advantage. Blessing, Sipes, Kerrison and Bierschied rounded out the top five. Taylor led the start of the final 250 Open B Stock class with Glass and Sipes in hot pursuit. Kerrison and Bierschied rounded out the top five. In the last corner of the first lap, Sipes managed to get by Glass to secure the runner-up position. Glass was relegated to third. Kerrison and Bierschied were a solid fourth and fifth. Taylor must have gone down in the front rhythm section because Sipes emerged in the point position with Glass, Kerrison, Bierschied and Derek Lucarz trailing. Sipes had a three second lead on lap three when Kerrison passed Glass for second. Sipes increased his lead to four seconds on lap four and added to more seconds to his advantage when he crossed the finish line for the final moto win. Kerrison, Glass, Lindsay and Zack Alkire rounded out the top five. After all the moto scores were tallied, Sipes had earned the top tier of the 250 Open B Stock podium with a 3-3-1. Glass took runner-up honors with a 4-1-3 tally and Kerrison closed out the podium with a 4-4-2 score.

flying dutchmen mx
July 10, 2005 • Photos by Jim Mucklin • ejmucklin@adelphia.net The Flying Dutchmen continues to be one of the leaders in MX racing in our region offering motocross racing for both motorcycles and quads. The Dutchmen also stands out as a leader for offering a separate mini track for racing where classes are formed for not only MX bikes but for off road built machines as well. This allows the club members at FDMC to attract riders that can’t participate at many other tracks around the area. In quad racing action two classes of 2 & 4 Stroke B had to be formed to handle all of the entries. Jason Kovacs took home the win in Group 1 with Tony Snyder taking the checkers in Group 2. Thomas Perfetto won the Vet over 30 race with Dylan Smith from Collegeville, PA going 2-1 for the O/A in the 91-200 / 91-300 division. In mini racing action on the big track some of the regulars stood out, names like Savidge and Buck took a pair of wins each with William Bleich winning the 85cc 12-13 class. On the mini track Pollux Fisher and Alexander Miller earned 50cc Oil Injected wins with Kyle Hass taking the top podium spot in the 100/125 4 stroke class. The Flying Dutchmen has a pair of races in August, one on the 7th and one on the 21st. Their final MX race of the season will be Labor Day Sunday, September 4th. This race will be D6 points along with FDMC Double Track Points. Lebanon Valley Cycles from Jonestown, PA is sponsoring that race and offering some pretty nice gift certificates so head on out to the Dutchmen to win the loot and the valuable D6 points. Jim Bull MRA
Ernie Ehrenzeller wins the 2 & 4 Stroke A division.
Tyler Clark (14t) and Andrew Levengood (4l) go top side in 125 C action. Clark would podium in 3rd.
Zachary Waldrop (116) battles Derek Miller (33) in 85cc 7-11 racing action.
Their (Flying Dutchmen) final MX race of the season will be Labor Day Sunday, Sept. 4th
Zachery Buck sweeps both the 85cc 14-15 and Supermini divisions.

National Champions • New Rides • First Wins Local Racers Shine at AMA Amateur Grand National Dirt Track Championships Springfield, Illinois – July 3-10, 2005 By Jim Bull Every year in July racers from our region of the country travel west to compete in the Amateur Nationals. Every year racers come home to District 6 with National Titles. District 6 is a hotbed for talent when it comes to motorcycle racing, dirt track racing especially. Names from way back, like Texter, Heiser, Bromley and Wherley. I’m sure there are many I’ve missed and many I’ve never even heard of. How about more recently, names like Johnson and Mees who are out there competing on the National Circuit and doing quite well for themselves. How about guys like John Lewis that in 2004 brought home three Premier Class wins along with the AMA’s Horizon Award. Then there’s the big dog, ever heard of a guy named Chris Carr? I believe 7 - Time Pro National Champ who dwells from right here in Honeybrook, PA. The list continues to grow in 2005. Some of the names are new; some are still out there doing it like Joe Bromley. Joe’s shooting for 20 National championships in 25 years and he’s close. But now his son Danny is out there making a name for himself.
John Lewis Gets Super Moto Ride 2004 Horizon Award winner John Lewis V from Coatesville, PA earns HMC – KTM deal for the upcoming season. HMC is a satellite team of Factory KTM and is run and owned by veteran racer Mitch Hansen. Hansen chose 16 year old John Lewis to represent his team on the new KTM 250F four stroker in the upcoming Pro Am Series in the newly formed 250 class. Lewis a local dirt track racer has been competing since the age of 6 and has quite an impressive resume under his belt. John has many track and district championships over the years along with 3 Premier Class National Championship wins in 2004. John
Then there’s the new generation of Texter’s following in their father Randy’s footsteps. Both Shayna and her brother Cory are making their place in history. Don’t forget the little guy either. Kenny Venarchick keeps bringing those titles home, Kenny could out do them all before he’s done. Following is a list of local racers that did well at the Nationals this year. Please forgive me if I missed some names or screwed up some stats. I’m just an old motocrosser trying to give you all the credit you deserve. Congratulations to all and best of luck in the future. DIRT TRACK - Mees Gets His First at Lima HM! Posted By Scott Rousseau
Mees Earns One 6/26/2005 Saddlemen/Lancaster Harley-Davidson/ Montgomeryville Cycle’s Jared Mees scored his first career AMA Grand National victory the old fashioned way, he earned it. During round six of the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Series at the Allen County Fairgrounds in Lima, Ohio, last night, the 19-year-old Pennsylvanian got off the line third in the 25-lap main event, but he soon settled into a pace that would take him away from Dominic Beaulac, past Kenny Coolbeth and early race leader and two-time defending event champion Joe Kopp. Mees passed Kopp for the lead on lap 12 and was never challenged after that. Kopp held on for second, with Coolbeth third. Defending series champion Chris Carr also passed Beaulac to take the fourth spot, with Beaulac fifth, ahead of JR Schnabel, Jake Johnson, Geo Roeder II, Johnny Murphree and Bryan Smith. Broome Tioga—August 19-21 • Steel City—September 1-4
Last month we brought you a new feature in MRA called “A Fans Guide to the Nationals”. We hope you found it informative and useful and we also hope you took the time to check out the National at Unadilla. We are very fortunate here in the east to have so many major outdoor races so close to home. Unlike Supercross where we need to drive close to a day to even get close to a race (just a hint in case anyone is reading that could change that). Maybe the organizers don’t realize that our region of the country carries 25 % of the U.S. population and that AMA District 6 alone carries 10 % of the AMA membership. Anyhow on to the upcoming Nationals. It’s hard to believe that we are this far along in the season. It has been an exciting one again for our region of the country. Broc Hepler stepped up and swept Unadilla, and how about the new guy Lawrence? Eighth overall on a Cernics Suzuki ride, it sounds like the east coast is kicking butt. As far as the 250 scene goes, well Ricky is just the man and I believe he gets better with every race. In August on the 19-21 we have “Americas Greatest Spectator Course” on the schedule. That’s right it’s time to head back to Broome – Tioga. This is always an exciting race to attend. Not only do we have all the Pro’s in town but most of our local heroes make the trip to try for the big show. Guys like Casey
Offers end August 31
Clark, Barry Carsten and Damian Plotts will have a chance to race the world’s best on one of their home tracks. If you’re heading out to Broome from District 6 you’ll want to make your way to Route 81 and head north into New York. Exit the highway at Whitney Point, exit 8 and take Route 79 west for 8 miles to the track. The best time to arrive if you’re only making the Sunday trip is between 7-8:00am. Remember to allow extra time for traffic and leave your pets and alcohol at home. Broome – Tioga does allow overnight camping if you’re going for the weekend but no campfires are allowed. You can log onto their website at www.broome-tioga.com to order advanced tickets and find lodging information. A weekend ticket for the Pro Weekend is $ 50.00, if you prefer to order by phone you can call (607) 849-4438. Coming up Labor Day weekend September 1-4 we have the Legendary Steel City National in western Pa. Again you get all of the racing action of the US Motocross Nationals within a few hours of home. Steel City has a full schedule of events planned in addition to all of the racing. On Saturday evening at 5:00pm Mad Mike Jones will have his Freestyle Show followed by Celebrity Adult Pit Bike Racing at 8:00pm. Sunday will bring the main events with the first Pro moto going off at 1:00pm. To get to Steel City from District 6 head
west on the PA Turnpike and take exit 146. Then head north on Route 220/99 to Route 56 west towards Johnstown. Once there take Route 22 west to Delmont, then Route 66 north 3 miles and turn right on Slickville Rd. Follow the signs from there, it’s .5 mile to the track. Before you go log onto the Racer Productions website at www. racerproductions.com/SCN.htm. There is more information here on the do’s and don’ts, where to stay and how to get tickets And last but not least you need to pack for your trip. Be sure to take your lawn chairs and blankets. Take clothing for all
weather conditions, it could be 90 degrees or then again it may rain, a couple of $ 2.00 ponchos from K Mart could make or break your weekend. Don’t forget the sunscreen, take plenty of water and snacks, it’s a long day and the hills are big. How about a sharpie and your favorite MRA T-shirt to get the Pro’s autographs? Wear comfortable shoes with good traction and a small set of binoculars will let you zoom in on all of the action. The rest is up to you, so head on out to a National and have a blast. Jim Bull MRA

doublin gap mx
All Star National Warm Up • July 2, 2005 On Saturday July 2, Doublin Gap held their Yamaha All Star National warm up race. It was a busy holiday weekend at the track with a practice day on Friday, a regular race on Saturday and pit bike racing Saturday night. Sunday is another story all together and we’ll get to that elsewhere in MRA. The expert racing action was hot on Saturday. Three men would battle for the chance to go home champion. In the 125 A division it was all Jeremy Cook and Willy Toth, the two would battle in both motos with Cook coming out the victor and taking the overall. In the 250 A division again Toth and Cook were in the mix, but Damien Plotts would get in on the action as well. Cook took the first moto win and Plotts would get the second moto, but it was young Willy Toth going 2-2 for the overall.
Another expert getting back in the action after an early season injury would be Ty Wallace. Wallace came back and competed in the Vet A division as well as in the evening pit bike festivities. In youth racing action Kameron Page was back in the saddle at Doublin Gap. Kameron is another local fast guy recently off the injury list. Kameron looked liked he was getting back to speed as he prepares for the Loretta Lynns Amateur Nationals. Another local fast guy on the move this weekend was Dylan Brajkovich, Dylan swept the 85cc (12-15) A class and took home a second in Super Mini.
RRP’s Damien Plotts gets the moto win but West Shore Suzuki’s Willy Toth grabs the 250 A overall.
Ridersville Cycle’s Tyler Monn competes in the 85cc 7-11 C division.
Matthew Shutt (5mx) wins the 60cc 7-11 C class over Dillion Thomas (34t). Gap Racing’s Scott Stockunas grabs a second in 50cc 4-6 B racing action.
The expert racing action was hot on Saturday.
Dylan Brajkovich was on fire sweeping the 85cc 12-15 A class.
Damien Plotts got in on the Pit Bike racing too !!
Justin Frederick (32f) takes care of the competition winning the overall’s on both Saturday and Sunday in the talent packed125 C divisions.
Alex Maggi (444) battles Devin Sheldon (402) in 85cc C class racing action.

doublin gap yamaha all star national Round #8 • Ultimate MX Series • Photos by Jim Bull
Sunday July 3rd brought the Annual Yamaha All Star National to Doublin Gap. The race was Round # 8 of the Ultimate MX Championship Series sponsored by MSR, Answer Racing, Pro Taper, Kenda Tires and Rossini Racing Products. This event also carried D6 Championship Points along with factory contingencies. In addition PR2 Motors put up extra cash for the overall winners of the 125 and 250 A divisions and Sheckells and Sons Construction dished out some hot holeshot cash as well. If that wasn’t enough Yamaha sponsored this event and Max Stevey of Lebanon, PA won a brand new Yamaha TTR 90 donated by Riders Edge Yamaha. Kenda Tires was there awarding tire sponsorships to local riders and the man behind the creation of this awesome series Mike Rossini of RRP/ Cycle Stuff was on hand with his Race Team and staff offering needed parts and track side support. Wow, need I say more? And we didn’t even talk about the racing yet. All of the local experts from the day before were on hand plus a few more. The action was good but I believe some of the most competitive
racing of the day came in the 125 C division. We only had one gate on this day and I’m glad that was the case, it would have been a shame to split this bunch up into two groups. Here we go, Justin Frederick, Addison Kramer, Ryan Sebastian, Bradley Presgraves, Broc Schmelyun, Landon Yingling, Zackery Rudy. This group of novice racers went tire to fender in both motos for the entire race. Leads were swapped, guys came from behind but in the end it was hare scramble racer turned motocrosser Justin Frederick that took it to them all. Matter of fact Frederick took the overall in Saturdays racing action as well. If you missed it, I’m sorry. The racing was good in all of the classes, the sponsorship was second to none and a good weekend was had by all. To view complete event photos from the weekend, check out www.mcracingaction.com and to find out more about the Ultimate MX Championship Series contact Rossini Racing Products at (908) 454-8800.
...the sponsorship was second to none
Lebanon Valley Cycles Lowell Spangler was red hot as usual winning both Supermini and 85cc 14-15.
Colton Bailey takes the School Boy and 125 B class wins.
Yamaha KTM of Camp Hill’s Jarek Balkovic gets the checkers in 65cc 7-9 racing action. Max Stevey from Lebanon, PA wins the Yamaha TTR 90 donated by Riders Edge Yamaha.
Craig Maurer wins 4 motos to take the 25+ and Vet B classes.
RRP’s Ronnie Stewart wins the holeshot cash put up by Sheckells & Sons Construction in 250 A racing action.
Plotts battles Cook over the Spectator Triple in 250A racing action.
250 C racing action, David Brady (42x) far outside would take the win.
Chad Aughinbaugh (883) and Daniel Holton (70x) swapped moto wins in the 4 Stroke division with Holton getting the O/A.
Ultimate MX Series sponsors, Rossini Racing Products, MSR and Kenda Tires were on hand to show their products.

Fav. Food: Ice Cream Fav. Racer: Ricky Carmichael , Bubba Stewart
Sponsors: Toy Tech, Kenda Tire, Mom & Dad, Pappy & Ne Ne Future goals: To go faster. If you are looking to watch a true Hotshot compete just head on out to an Ultimate Series Race and watch young Damian Thompson lay it down. We had seen Damian ride before but had never really paid enough attention to see what this 65cc racer was up to. Last month we got a phone tip about how well Damian was progressing and we thought we better check him out. We caught up with Damian and his family at an Ultimate MX Series race at Doublin Gap where we got a great thrill watching him ride. Damian hasn’t made the winners circle yet but he’s been grabbing holeshots and finishing top five. Damian rode so good that day that he earned himself a deal with Kenda Tires. Kenda’s National Sales Manager was on hand and when he saw Damian ride he knew he had to have him. John has been around racing for many years and he said to me, “Do you know that kid ? He’s got potential”. We put the two together and the rest is history. Now, not only does Damian have the skill and desire, but he’s got a great new set of rubber under him to get the job done. Put that together with competing in the Ultimate Series sponsored by Answer, MSR, Pro Taper, Kenda and RRP and we’re sure to get a winner. I also got to hang with Damian for a few hours at the track, he was helping me get some great camera angles. Let me tell you, he’s one cool kid and sure to be a winner. I recommend keeping your eye’s on him, he’s gonna be a champ. Jim Bull MRA

August 1-6 • Hurricane Mills, TN • Amateur Nationals On August 1-6, 2005 the 24th Annual Air Nautiques AMA Amateur National Championships presented by Amsoil rolls into scenic Hurricane Mills, TN. Each year the best amateur racers in the country travel to Loretta Lynn’s Ranch with the hopes of coming away with the coveted number one plate. For some it marks the end of a successful amateur career, for others it’s the beginning of the sought after path to pro racing. Either way our region of the country is always well represented. We wish everyone that is going a safe and exciting journey. No matter what the results are in Tennessee please remember that you are among the top of your class, you are the best of the best and whether you come home number 1 or the last in your group you are still among the best in the country. Congratulations and have a blast. We had file photos of many of you and some we need to list. I’m sure there will be a few that we missed and for that we apologize. Jim Bull MRA

Round #11 • D6 Championship Points • Photos by MRA Round # 11 of the D6 Championship Points Series rolled into Happy Ramblers in early July and was sponsored by West Shore Suzuki of Mechanicsburg, PA. The track was in fantastic shape in consideration of the down pours we had in the days prior to the event. The club members did an excellent job of preparing it for all of the rain. The big winner of the day was Stephen Stella from Westminster, MD. Stella swept three classes taking the district points in 125A, Four Stroke and Unlimited. Last years D6 Champion, Clint Johnson laid down two wins on the day, 25 Plus and 250A. James Triano traveled from Long Pond, PA to grab the win in the 250C class with Josh Lingle riding out of B & B KTM in Lancaster, PA grabbing both the College Boy and 250B class wins. The heat and humidity were a factor on this day and racers and fans alike were doing their best to stay cool. Happy Ramblers next event is an MDRA Series Race being sponsored by Motorcycle Racing Action. There will be a practice day with evening BBQ on August 27th with Round # 10 of the MDRA Race Series on Sunday August 28th.

Team Jesus Ministries Races to Sunday MX Events MX Chaplain Zach Camp and his wife Anna are teaming up to help bring the word of Jesus Christ to racers and their families at all MDRA Races and at all Doublin Gap and Happy Ramblers events. Zach recently graduated from Bible College, has been holding Sunday morning services at some of the tracks for quite some time now. This year he and his wife are making the effort to get out to all of the events to offer prayer and the word of Christ to all racers that love to race motocross but can’t get to a church service due to the early race start times.
MX Chaplain Zach Camp In talking to the Camps I can tell that this is truly their calling, they always have a smile for you and Zach just loves to share
Zach holds a pre - race service. his knowledge of the Bible with all who care to listen. Zach is an expert rider himself, so he not only knows the joy of having God in his life; he also knows how cool it is to bust a big double jump and to race for the checkers on a Sunday afternoon. Services are open to all and are usually held 30 minutes before the riders meeting in an area somewhere near signup. Stop by and join Team Jesus Ministries and check out how God can improve your standings both on and off the track. Zach also asked that we mention a service that he offers to help support his ministry. If you are in need of having a practice track built or know someone that does, give him a call or email at (717) 404-3878 or
teamjesusracing7@aol.com . Zach has the ability to turn your back yard in to a first class practice track and proceeds go to support his ministry. Also if you need prayer or have any questions at all you can reach Zach at the above contact info. If you would like to make a donation to help the Camps keep their ministry in the winner’s circle you can send that to: Five Forks BIC, 9244 Five Forks Rd. Waynesboro, PA 17268. Attn: Victory In Jesus Ministries.
Zach races in the 125 A Class.

With our new Kids Tracks you can bring your beginner riders out and feel secure knowing that they’ll be safe and having fun, even if they’re just learning. These additional tracks will be open for the upcoming season. With our various tracks and layouts, we cater to all skill levels and ages. Tomahawk has open practice year round (weather permitting in winter), and there are no memberships required to practice. Practice days are Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Be sure to check our website at www.tomahawkmx.com for updates on practices and races. For the 2005 season, Tomahawk MX will be part of the new Mason Dixon Riding Association (MDRA). We will host two MDRA races, in addition to our own racing schedule. Bikes and Quads are welcome at Tomahawk on practice days. For this upcoming season, we will split up the race days for bikes and quads, so they do not race on the same days.

Round #7 • MDRA Race Series • Photos by MRA On Sunday, July 17th the MDRA Series roared into Pennsylvania and brought with it its normal average of 500 race entries. It also brought another record humidity day along with a little rain, so to speak. The MDRA offers a practice day on the day before each race and over 200 racers showed up on Saturday to practice and then to watch the rains move in Saturday night. Sunday dawned and the 2.7 inches of rain that had fallen in the Shippensburg area in the days prior was still running off the track. But the rains held and the track ended up in great shape for all in attendance. By halfway thru the first set of motos the dust was flying and by the break the water trucks were out. The racing action was hot as usual, the series standings are within single digit points in many classes and this series is going to come down to the wire in a big way. There are excellent cash payouts and rider bucks available to class champions and series founder Rod Yentzer promises it’s only going to get better for next year. There are some major sponsors getting ready to sign on and if that becomes a reality the MDRA is going to go thru the roof. Check out the results here, check out the points online at www.masondixonriding.com, check out the pictures at www.mcracingaction.com and if you want to check out the fastest growing series on the east coast head out to either Happy Ramblers or Doublin Gap in the month of August and see what all the fuss is really about.

Tech Tips
Most of the today’s serious racers use an oxygenated fuel. One of the drawbacks (other than the price.....) of these fuels is the corrosive side effect it has on the metals both inside your carburetor and engine. The fuels cause an oxidation to form on the metals on the inside of your carb, piston, and valves. The oxidation is similar to rust pitting the surfaces inside your motor. We’ve even had one instance of the corrosion causing a valve to stick open, thus hitting the piston and bending the valve. Many of you have seen the new labels on the VP ultimate 4 cans: Although this warning may make the consumer aware of the problem, it does little to prevent the damage. Simply draining your carb does nothing to the inside of your engine, and it also does not remove the coating of fuel left inside your carb. One fix is to drain your carb as the warning label indicates, then run some straight gas through your engine. This means draining your gas tank too, or removing your fuel hose and using an auxiliary gas tank to run your engine. This needs to be done after every ride. Sounds like a BIG hassle, right? Realistically, very few of us will follow this procedure. The problem is not as prevalent in 2-strokes because of the fact that your mixing oil with your fuel, thus leaving a layer of protection on the metal surfaces from the 2-stroke oil. Our solution for the 4-strokes is to add a 2-stroke castor oil to your fuel. Any good castor oil such as Klotz benol will work. Add the oil to your fuel at a rate of 1 oz. per gallons (5 oz. in a 5 gallon can). This will provide just enough protection to the metals inside your scoot but is not enough to have any detrimental effects. The minimal amount of oil will not hamper performance. Your 4-stroke will never know it’s there, but you (or your mechanic) will be pleased at the inside of your engine! T

11th Annual Kevin McNicholas Memorial • Round #1 of 6 On Wednesday night July 20th the Cockeysville Optimist Club and the Baltimore County Trail Riders hosted Round # 1 of 6 of the 11th Annual Kevin McNicholas Memorial Outdoor Series at the Timonium State fairgrounds. Close to 200 riders came out for the opener and as usual the outdoor bleachers were full of excited fans there to catch all of the short track racing action. The Sportsman class was loaded with talent and was the first main event of 2005. Jason Isennock from Timonium, MD jumped out to the early lead and never looked back. The 50cc (4-6) group was next off the line and was very similar to the Sportsman main. Young Kyle McGrane grabbed the early lead and raced to the checkered flag. Things started to heat up when the 450 / Open stock framed machines came to the line. Everyone was anxious to get going and all jumped the green except for RJ Hart. Wayne Sody event ref wasn’t messing around and he sent everyone but Hart to the back line. On the restart Hart got out in front as the rest of the pack swarmed him. If you missed this race I’m sorry, they were 3 and 4 wide through the corners and lead changes were occurring several times on each lap. It came down to the final turn and on the photo finish Chris Klinefelter (99s) was awarded the win.
In 50cc 7-8 action two Smith boys put on a great show. Colton and Robby Smith got out in front and swapped the lead several times thru out the main. In the end it was Colton taking the win. In Senior racing action as expected Timonium veteran Robert Babcock won the 40 and 45 plus classes. And in the women’s XR 100 class, Lisa Niner took the win coming back from her tour with the armed services. I could go on and on talking about how exciting this event was, you just really needed to be there. The 450 mod frame class was just as wild as the stock frame class. In the 125 division we had two re-starts with Joey Parks and Shayna Texter taking it right down to the final lap with Parks taking the win and in the 85cc division in was Texter again with Danny Bromley taking the upset win. If you’re looking to catch some exciting racing action the Timonium Series will be running Wednesday and Friday nights in the first two weeks of August. For complete scheduling and information you can log onto www.bctra.com and to view complete event photos check out www.mcracingaction.com .
Jeremiah Snow (00) chases down Colton Smith (41) in 65cc racing action.
3 Time Amateur National Champion Robert Babcock wins both 40 + and 45 + at Timoniums opener.
Jacob Miller leads a 50cc group down the front straight. Miller took his heat win and finished second in the main in his first race ever.
Michael Koppenhaver from Myerstown, PA takes a top 5 finish in 450 / Open B.
...you just really needed to be there.
Ryan Henderson wheelies across the finish line in Adult 100 heat racing action.
Adult 50 racing action is always hot at Timonium Corey Hormes (182) wins the main.

Do You Hear Bells? Sports enthusiasts have seen their heroes suffer concussions in various sports. Just look at what happened a few of seasons ago to Travis Pastrana and Ryan Hughs. .Some riders are able to return to racing within minutes, while other riders are unable to return to the race and lots of times miss several races due to their head injury. Returning to racing too soon can be very dangerous if you have not been cleared by a doctor. It can result in serious brain injury and possibly death. A concussion is an injury to the brain, it is important to know and recognize the symptoms. Sometimes they may present themselves immediately or sometimes it takes several hours and possibly days after the initial injury. A friend or family member may be the first to recognize the symptoms if they do not present themselves immediately. Symptoms are often missed and unfortunately sometimes ignored. Also remember that only 10% of concussions result in loss of consciousness or (LOC). Any LOC should be treated cautiously due to the severity of a concussion. The majority of concussions are not serious, but if a rider returns too soon, it could result in a phenomenon called Second Impact Syndrome. This occurs when another impact occurs before the brain is properly healed from the first concussion. Effects of Second Impact Syndrome include; permanent neurological impairment and it can even cause death due to rapid brain swelling. A decision to return to racing should be made by health professionals trained to evaluate head injuries. Evaluation techniques include mental status testing. Frequent questions usually include time, place, person and how the injury occurred. Exertion provocative tests such as a 40 yard sprint as well as push - ups and sit - ups are also used to ensure symptoms do not return from increased blood pressure. These are only a few examples and do not include neurological tests. Head injuries are very difficult to evaluate and many times people make judgment calls on who should ride and who should not. Certified athletic trainers and physicians are trained to treat head injuries. These professionals have the knowledge to make the right decision whether to return to racing or to give it some more time off. The riders safety should always come first. Common symptoms of concussion include headache, memory disturbances, dizziness, confusion, ringing in the ears and nausea. If you suffer from any of these symptoms after receiving an impact to the head, whether immediately or several days afterward, please get evaluated by a health professional. Remember if you can, your life could depend on it.
