Hey everybody - Happy August. Actually it’s Happy National Month. July was full of big races starting off with the Amateur National Flat Track Championships in DuQuoin, IL. We had several riders from the area score big there, please check out our recap in this issue. Western PA hosted a GNCC event in early July which looked to be a tough one and there was an AMA National Harescramble to end the month at Rausch Creek. That race will actually take place after this printing and will be featured next month. On top of all that, the areas best amateur motocrossers are on their way south for the 27th running of the AMA Amateur Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynns Ranch in Hurrican Mills, TN. By the time many of you are reading this issue the champions will be crowned,

some earning factory contracts with others heading home to start the process all over again. Check this issue to see who’s going and check back next month to see who won. The local scene is still going strong with good turnouts at the tracks and great battles while there. Check this issue for several rounds of coverage from both the MDRA and Ultimate Series races. I know we don’t want to think about it, but both series are coming to a head with only a few rounds left. Before you know it, we will be headed to Doublin Gap for the big year end shoot out. Make sure you get to the last few rounds of your chosen series to earn those valuable points. A trip to the shoot out along with a great finish there will not only get you in MRA, it will go a long way to help secure those much needed sponsors. The best amateur riders from our region are going to come together and duke it out to see who’s the fastest in their particular classes and sponsors want to work with the guys and gals who are out in front. Remember to check out all of our regular columns and to log on weekly to our website. If we weren’t at the event you attended last weekend there is a good chance that one or more of our contributors were. You can check out most of their websites right from our “Contributors Corner” located at the top of our homepage. All of the race coverage, right in one spot. Mountaineer Raceway 6/29/08 By Ashley Boyan Another day, another chance to win and another great weekend of MDRA racing was brought to Mountaineer Raceway. Stanley Bolen III or should I say Screwy Boldlen III pulled off one heck of a day. He finished up decently at 11th place in the 250 C division and had a gnarly crash which sent him to the hospital with a fractured collar bone. He must have dying passion for this sport because he came back from the hospital and finished out his day! Now that’s dedication. Michael Bear, # 914 on a Yamaha, looked good in the plus 25 division and went 2-3 taking a third overall. Max Stevey and Tyler Condon battled in the C division all afternoon in 250 C. Tony Archer from Waldorf, MD went 1-1 in School Boy 4-stroke, but Dakota Yohe was on fire once again. With a super smooth ride in the School Boy 2-stroke, he took the win. Kameron Page shut out Josh Corbin in the Supermini 12-15 division going 2-1 and 1-2. Shayla Stephens has been steadily improving in her riding abilities and it is showing with her 2nd overall finish for the women. Kipp Brookens, co-owner of Nine1Nine Designs, recapped the day by saying “It’s another great day of racing. The track looked pretty good and [the] guys in the Expert Class were really riding today. I’m just glad the little girl who went over the barricade on the atv is ok.” It is never a dull day of racing in the MDRA series. See you at the next track

Mountain Ridge GNCC

July 5-6, 2008 - Somerset, PA GNCC Somerset Race Recap! The Grand National Cross Country Series (GNCC) stopped in our home state of Pennsylvania for the GEICO Mountain Ridge at Mountain Ridge Park in Somerset, PA. Round #9 of the 13 round series was also co-sactioned with our local PA State Harescramble Series and Atlantic Grand Prix Series as well as the new National AMA Harescramble East Series. Although the weather predictions for the weekend showed a 60% chance of rain and showers we stayed optimistic and hoped for the best. After walking much of the track on Saturday and watching the Pro Quads I was praying that we weren’t going to get any rain at all overnight or on Sunday for that matter. On Saturday we did see some showers and rain at times but it was just enough to be considered refreshing. Cloud cover was constant throughout the weekend and it wasn’t until the Pro Bike race on Sunday until we saw the sunshine. Dark clouds that were visible over the distant mountain tops would keep the umbrella and rain coats near but they wouldn’t be needed on Sunday because it didn’t rain or shower at all! And it’s a good thing too because it would have made the track even more brutal than it already was. The track for the afternoon bike race was a 14 mile loop which consisted of about every type of rock and boulder you could think of. It seemed that even in the “smooth” field sections there were rocks protruding through the soil which kept you honest and searching for another spot to catch your breath. Up in the woods were some of the biggest boulders that I have even ridden through, let alone raced through. I thought Rausch Creek was bad but this track definitely has them beat. I’ve heard about last year’s race here, which I missed because I had Lymes Disease, and now I know why I didn’t really see any familiar faces from the PA State Series. Regardless of how vicious and technical the track was I didn’t expect any less because it’s a GNCC and it host some of the best riders in the world.

And there they were at the start, right in front of me…David Knight, Charlie Mullins, Barry Hawk, Nathan Kanney, Josh Strang, Thad Duvall, and Justin Willamson just to name a few. I really got a good feel of what it’s like to be up front because these are the best of the best in the most prestigious off road racing series in the world. As I looked to the left and right of the 250 A line which precedes the Pro XC1 and XC2 classes in front of us and I realized that I would have to run the best race of my life to even be in the mix of the talent that I was competing with. Most of these guys focus on this sport as a living and most will be getting signed or turning pro next year. Me, I’ve just started riding a dirtbike 5 years ago and this is only my forth year of racing. But never the less when that flag drops I’m hitting it as best I can for as long as I can and that is the best I can do. The flag dropped and I got a terrible start, which was not in the grand plan of how to start off for the day. The top of the pack took off and I banged bars with the riders who were in the same boat as me. The first 4 miles were great, I was keeping a good pace and then we went into the woods and hit the first boulder section and there were guys everywhere. It didn’t take me long to get stuck in this boulder section, which I realized wasn’t even part of the track. There must have been a bottle neck so people spread

out to get around them and I followed a couple people on the wrong trail. Getting lost on the first lap was another situation that wasn’t in the grand plan for the race. Eventually we got out of that section and continued to pound out miles on the 14 mile loop. The field sections were 5th gear pinned and 90% of the woods were big boulder rock racing. Delmarva Motorsports Park - July 19-20, 200 The Middle Atlantic Motocross Association held its 8th event of the season at Delmarva Motorsports Park in Seaford Delaware July 18-20th 2008. Open practice was held Friday with DMP’s Friday night events on the oval track with 4 divisions of Mod Lites and 270 and 600 Micro Sprints held shortly after. Saturday brought clear skies and hot weather with lots of action. Joseph Turner #899 won both motos in the Super Senior class, placed second in the first Senior Open moto and came back to win in the second one while Donnie Michaelis #29 took first place in both Senior Support races. Eugene Kaczka #17 won both Super

Senior Support races and in the Collegeboy class, Marty Gutowski #697 swept both motos while Logan France #523 took both in the Schoolboy 12-16 class. The Womens Class mixed things up a little with Amanda Brown #293 winning the first moto and Meagan Cascio #802 the second. Chelsea Brown #129 placed second and third respectively. The weather hung around for Sundays events as Mini Woman Open and Support kicked things off with Amanda Brown #293 taking both races in the Open and Tammy Posey #27 winning both in the Support group. Open A and B followed with Michael Groves #125 winning both A motos and Marty

Gutowski #697 and T J Irvin #77 splitting honors in B. Dave Desell #51x dominated Open C while Joseph Peery #150 and Justin Rodbell #58 spilt the 50A class. Benjamin Carroll #568 placed second in the first moto in 50B and took home a win in the second. Kelly Snider #104 took top spot in both motos in 80A 1215 while Dylan Blettner #32 and Joshua Peery #396 split motos in 80B 12-15. Creighton Hostelka #18 and Charles Wernig #31 swapped wins in 80A 9-11 as did Dalton Blettner #33 and Makiya Gorman #4 in 80B 9-11. Erik Struder #326 and Frankie Digiovannantoni #41 shared wins in 80C 12-15 while Kenny Vanvorst #197 won both motos in 80C 9-11. In the Schoolboy 4-stroke class Scott Clark #442 won both races with Tyler Boyer #2 taking second spot. Landon Hitt #35 took both 50 4 stroke motos as Jeremy Caudill #4x split wins with Davin Cote #006 in 50 Oil 4-6. Benjamin Carroll #568 continued his streak in 50 Oil 7-8 by taking home first in both motos. Charles Wernig #31 and Dalton Blettner #33 continued their runs by taking home first in both motos in 60A for Wernig and 60B for Blettner’

Richards #911 and Kelly Snider #104 also split motos. Andrew Benson #191 both motos in 250A while Levi Clemens #124 and Marty Gutowski #697 shared the wins in 250B. Dave Desell #51x continued to show his skills as he took both motos in 250C Div I. Division II mixed things up with Jesse Powell #8 taking the first moto and Kirby Kinslow #188 taking the second. Brad Collins #11x finished third in both motos.

Junior Mini brought out the largest moto of the day with 36 entries as Makiyah Gorman #4 held them all off to take home first in both events. With all 16 motos run with no major delays and few injuries it turned out to be a great day. Thanks to the staff at DMP for having the track in great condition as well as all the MAMA volunteers and workers for putting on a great show.

I got to check out some crazy battles while sitting on the track, getting sunburnt and scoring the races. Blue Diamond races are always either hot and sunny, or really muddy... The regular track race on Sunday, June 29th was one of those hot days. Allen DeCarlo and the track crew were worried about the 65% chance of rain so they started the first set of motos by going 6 laps. It turned out that the rain didn’t join us, so we even got to do the 2nd set of races, of 4 laps, and somehow got out of the parking lot by 5pm! with Kevin Bailey doing a great job of announcing all day long. There were lots of great battles going on all day... Kenny Day of the 802, was banging bars with Robert Garthe on the 543 bike in the 250A and Open A classes. Kenny took one moto win, with Robert taking the other three. In the 250C class, Stefano Saienni on the KTM of 428, took a spill in one moto, and went from last all the way to 3rd in 3 laps! Then he also took 3 other wins during the day! Tiana Alfano and Jessica Lockard battled during the Women’s class motos. Tiana took the win in the first moto, after a 6 lap moto of constant battling. Jessica took the 2nd moto win. Tiana also raced Schoolboy too, and beat a couple of boys in that class too! The 85 rider of Coty Schock rode some awesome motos, in the 85 9-11, winning that class overall, and then even won the Juniormini class as well. Tyler Wozney took all 4 wins in the Open B and Collegeboy classes, looking better and smoother, every time he rides! Watch out for Tyler as

2008 Loretta Lynn Preview Local Racers earn their spots at National Championship Motocross Race at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch Hurricane Mills, TN Many of our local racers have just made their dreams come true. The following local talent has qualified for the largest amateur motocross race in the world, the 27th annual Air Nautiques/AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch. These racers took on over 20,000 hopefuls from across America to earn one of just 1386 qualifying positions. “The Amateur Nationals at Loretta Lynn’s is the event every motocross racer in the country wants to compete in,” says Event Director Tim Cotter. “A win at the Amateur Nationals can serve as a springboard to a

lucrative professional motocross career.” Most of America’s top professional motocrossers, including James Stewart, Ricky Carmichael, Travis Pastrana and Jeremy McGrath have won AMA Amateur National Championships at Loretta Lynn’s. The race is so prestigious that last year, three teenaged stars, Elk City, Oklahoma’s Trey Canard, Saint Clair, Michigan’s Nico Izzi, and Lincolnton, North Carolina’s Austin Stroupe, were awarded six-figure pro contracts after the race. This year’s event will take place from July 28th through August 2nd. These racers are a part of the over 20,000 that spent the last four months qualifying for the event. The top finishers in area and regional qualifiers earn a birth into the national championship race at Loretta

Lynn’s. Racers may enter a wide variety of classes, from minicycle classes for children as young as four, all the way up to a Senior division for riders over 45. There are also classes for women, and classes for both stock and modified bikes. The track is built on a section of Loretta Lynn’s Ranch and Campground in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. The course contains a variety of jumps, corners and other obstacles designed to test the skills and stamina of the racers. Most riders attend the event with the help of their families. In fact, many groups consider the event their family’s summer vacation. Besides races, the ranch provides family-friendly facilities including a game room, swimming pools, arts and crafts activities, and a fashion and talent show. Foundation 529

Unfortunately rtunately many foundations are formed because of something tragic that happens in someone’s life. Most times however, something really good can come because the foundation was formed. That’s the way life is, isn’t it? Many times we have to give to get. There are some who pay the ultimate price of giving for others to receive and the one’s that can suffer the most can be the one’s that are left behind. Wyatt Barto (529) along with his remaining family members are among those that have paid the ultimate price. Wyatt is fine, yes he is missed by his family and friends and yes he could have had many great years ahead of him here on earth. But he is now in heaven with his maker and he will never ever

sorrows. again suffer any pains or sorrows

Foundation 529 was formed from the loss of Wyatt, but the work the foundation is doing is something that Wyatt would be proud of and it will most certainly help some of our local racers along the way. We all love the sport we compete in and it takes huge commitment, physical ability, much desire, a little luck and lots of cash. Many times we are just getting by on equipment or protective gear because of the amount of cash required to do what we love to do. That’s where Foundation 529 comes in. Wyatt was lost to a head injury, and not because he didn’t have the right protective

gear, it was just gear his time. There are however many racers competing without the best gear that’s available and who knows what the reason. Maybe we can help extend their time by getting them outfitted properly. Foundation 529 is raising money thru the sale of wrist bands and t-shirts and thru special ride days at tracks around the area. There are still a few to come this season and product is always available from the foundation to help raise money. They then take the money and seek out local racers that may need a better helmet or a protective neck brace and they purchase that equipment for the local racer. If you can help in any way please do. None of

us want to be the one to pay the ultimate price, and none of us ever expect that we will be the one that has to. Please give while you can, maybe it will help save the life of the guy pitted next to you, or your neighbors kid or maybe even one of your own. Futrell in sight for second overall with another Honda rider in third. That rider was Trapanis/Dragon sponsored Anthony Roth with 4-3 scores narrowly edging NJ hero Barry Carstens 3-4 motos for third overall. As good as Futrell was in the Expert class Cicero, New Yorks Josh Emmi was just as dominant almost. Only Sal Calamita was able to stop the Kawasaki riders dominance. Emmi won both 450 B motos with Kyle Sidle putting his Lebanon Valley Cycles backed Suzuki in second with 2-2 motos and Delmarva Powersports sponsored Joshua Willin using 3-5 scores for third. Emmi was able to win the first 250 B moto followed by Sidle and Yamaha rider Kody Renzland. In the second moto Honda mounted Calamita was able to ruin Emmis perfect day. Emmi held onto second behind Calamita with Sidle in third. Emmi would win the overall followed by Calamita and Sidle in second and third respectively.

clearly Clinton North Carolinas Taylor Futrell. The VPE/ Serious Racewear Honda rider showed the fans at Englishtown that he would be the guy to beat in the A class this August in Tennessee. Although Futrell didn’t holeshot every moto he did quickly dispatch the rest of the class on his way to a perfect 4 for 4 day. Keeping him honest in the 250 Expert class was Thor backed Kawasaki rider Brian Mulcahy. Mulcahy used 2-4 motos to claim second overall behind the Honda speedster. Third overall behind Mulcahy was Shift/Matts Honda backed Ryan Blizzard with 4-3 motos. In 450 Expert class racing KPS/MCC backed Dakota Kessler went 2-2 to keep

Warm temperatures and a threat of severe storms throughout the day greeted the 600+ riders who came to Old Bridge Township’s Raceway Park on June 29th for Round # 7 of the Ultimate MX Series. The District 6 Promoters Group created this new for 2008 series that takes place over the summer with a race at each of the districts 9 tracks. With contingencies on the line from all of the major manufacturers at most rounds and a series point’s championship at stake the competition was sure to be intense.

Canon point and shoot camera. I C stepped up slightly to a Olympus s point and shoot and then a p Canon Rebel. It was fun to C do d for awhile and my work got my foot in the door with many publications and news websites. Video is something I have always wanted to do before I even got involved with the media deal. I just never knew how to do it. So with some help from fellow videographer Robo Robb Swiatek and some things I learned on my own, I was able to put some short videos together for Holeshot Graphics’ website at the start. I just think photos are too easy so I wanted to challenge myself with video.

How cool was it going onstage and accepting your award in front of your peers? Well, I never knew the spotlight was that bright! I could only see like the first 2 rows and the rest was pure white light. I probably looked all droopy up there but I was in the spotlight for first time in my life. Everyone in the crowd was applauding. Even people I didn’t even know were congratulating me. It was an honor for sure. When they said “And the winner is....Moto Xposure 3”, I had the biggest smile on my face and I tried not to trip walking down to the stage! It was unreal and to be recognized for my work is definitely a huge plus in my book. Hopefully it will happen again soon!

Many of you will recognize Matt’s work on Motoxposure and MXPTV. Here is a little bit about Matt Wozney, the man behind HG Films.

What do you enjoy more. Still or Video? I feel like with photos, you’re limited to what you can do. With video, there is so much you can do with what you got. There are so many more angles you can get with video than with photos. I just never could figure out a better way to get my photos out there so video was an avenue to something better that I wanted to accomplish. But don’t get me wrong, I love to shoot photos from time to time but video is where my specialty is at!

First of all. Tell us a lttle about yourselfThe name is Matt Wozney. Woz is what everyone calls me. I’m 22 years old from North Haledon, NJ for about 2 more weeks. I’ll be moving to Clayton, Delaware right after Loretta’s for good. I’m a videographer, photographer, web deveolper/ designer, writer, and extremely part time announcer!

Do you still shoot photos? Not lately. Last time I shot photos was during my Promo Week at Blue Diamond in April and that was with Mark Garvey’s camera. My camera is broken and done and haven’t had the money or time to get a new one. I think the last race I shot was the first New England Regional Championship in Winchester, NH back in 2006.

You recently did some video shoots with riders and posted them online. Do you see that as a new way of producing resumes for riders? I see that as being the new wave of getting that elusive sponsorship for the riders in the near future. When I film and produce these promo videos for the riders, I always look at it from the company’s point of view. What do they want to see out of a rider they are willing to sponsor? Do they wear their gear correctly? Do they have an up beat personality? How do they look on and off the track? These are some things you can’t get out of a normal resume on paper. I believe it is the best way for riders to draw potential sponsors and get the support they always need.

You originally were a racer. What got you started on the media side? I started racing in 1999 on a 1997 Honda CR80 and was a mid pack type of rider. But I did win some C class races and a 250 B class at Blue Diamond one time. It all started on the media side in April 2003 when I had a concussion at a Loretta Lynn area qualifier at Doublin Gap. I was going to be out for 2 1/2 months and I knew I needed to do something during that time to keep me busy at the track. I always wanted to get into the media world and do something different. In the Northeast at the time, it was pretty dead media wise and I wanted to make a change and get top riders like Justin Barcia, Phil Nicoletti, Gregg Duffy, Jay Weller, and others who were flying at the local tracks to get their name out there more. I didn’t think the Northeast deserved much recognition since the Southeast and West regions were overshadowing everyone at the time. And there were tons of fast racers out there in the Northeast that no one knew about. My first race I covered was a local race at Atco in April 2003. And then the ball rolled from there...

What got you thinking about producing your own DVD? When I started in April 2005 with video, I kind of thought about it but by the end of the year, I had all this awesome footage and wanted to put it to good use. There was like 1 or 2 videos of Northeast motocross racing out there but they felt like they were from centuries ago! So, I decided to put Moto Xposure together in November 2005. I wanted to show off what the Northeast had in motocross racing, particularly the amateur scene. It did well for my first DVD since I barely had a year of filming under my belt.

Do you still get to ride? Yeap, I still swing my leg over a bike once and awhile. I have been riding my brother Tyler’s RM250 at Blue Diamond a lil bit lately. Ever since my major head injury in September 2004, I have been taking it really easy and not racing like I used to. I’m just having fun now and throwing some mean one footers is all that makes me happy now! You were one of the first guys to move from still photography to video. How did that come about? The photography deal was great when I started. It started with writing articles for Cycle News and shooting with my mother’s

After success with Moto Xposure 1 was it easier or more difficult for #2? I’d say it was more difficult just because of the amount of footage I had over the year and I wanted to make the first DVD look like some 5 year old did it! It turned out way better with Impact Video stepping up and help distributing Moto Xposure 2, which has sold over 1,300 copies as of now, more than any Moto Xposure DVD. Some things were easier since my editing skills got better and things worked out well with #2. How about the Xtremey Award Winning Moto Xposure 3? The Xtremeys will be a night I will never forget. I had a good feeling coming in that I would walk away with the Xtremey that night. It was a first class awards show, no doubt about that! From the red carpet going into the theater to the free exotic food to the whole night in general was just amazing. Impact Video put together a great show! I always have my award on my desk to motivate me and always do better!

What is the goal behind the new website MXPTV? MXPTV (Moto Xposure TV) is my new video website that I have going now. It is a new home for my video work but I am expanding it with not just race highlight videos. I am putting together actual shows from the local races and also producing track profiles, rider interviews, product tests and demos, and much more content along the way. I want the site to be very informative and entertaining at the same time. I have started some small tests on getting a live feed going and possibly do a live show from some of the bigger local races in the future. My main goal is to make MXPTV the place to get your moto fix when you are at home watching race highlights from the weekend before or scoping out a race track before you haul or checking out some awesome products or just laughing away during funny interviews and some hilarious outtakes . My personal goal is to make MXPTV my life long dream come true at doing videos and making a living out of it. My ultimate goal is getting on TV as a small show but that is a long ways away. But you never know! I could get a call tomorrow! In addition to your videography you still do a little bit of writing including a monthy column for AmateurMX. How did that opportunity come about? Amateur MX has been behind me for lots of years. I have covered a few races for them and did some interviews from the beginning. Then, when I got into video, they were still behind me and plugged me along the way. They know I have a special talent for what I do and that I can get the work done when needed. The Hultner’s have been very supportive from day 1 and they know that I’m capable of doing some amazing work down the road. They contacted me about putting together my own column for their magazine and I was happy about the opportunity. It eventually turned into an internet column

and I plan on writing new material every 1-2 weeks. There is always a lot going on in my life and I don’t think a monthly magazine will cover that. So, the internet is the spot for it and they love the whole concept. I think it will turn out great for me and Amateur MX and I’ll be able to get some writing adrenaline out of me! What are the future plans for Matt Wozney and HG Films? My future. Well.....I remember when I started in 2005, my dream was to release a DVD. OK.....did that. In 2006, it was doing work for Racer X. Done that. 2007 was about getting my footage on TV. I did that with the Racer X Motocross Show as Speed has shown footage I filmed that has appeared on their shows. Now, I’m starting to work with Fox now and kicking off my new MXPTV site. I always try to better myself each time. I just plan on doing better and better each year and see where it brings me to. I’d like to do what I do now for the rest of my life but you never know when an amazing opportunity (that is actually worth doing) comes around the corner. I’ve always thought my ultimate dream in filming motocross was getting a call from Fox and produce Terrafirma 9. Hey, it could happen! But I always try to do bigger and better things to get these opportunities and so far, I have been getting a lot. So, we’ll see but the future is looking really bright now. I will be putting up new videos each week and plan to do more than 2 or so a week down the road after I move down to Delaware and do MXPTV full time. But for now, MXPTV is my main focus now. It maybe a few more years with MXP4 but we’ll see how things go down the road.

on the final day of racing at the 2008 AMA Black Cat Gold Dirt Track Grand Championships, winning both the 85cc Modified 12-15 years and 125cc Modified classes. Bromley, who originally planned to ride an off-road race today, changed his plans and stayed for the TT after rain delayed the program earlier in the week--

and the decision paid off. Bromley took to the track with determination in the 85cc Modified 12-15 class and jumped out front quickly. He was not alone, however, as T.J. Masset made his presence known just waiting for a mistake that never came. Cole Anderson of Cambridge, Minnesota, was involved in his own battle for third with Kentucky rider Evan Fields. Although Fields was able to show him a wheel occasionally, Anderson held tough for the final podium of the day with Fields having to settle for fourth. Staton Lomas rounded out the top five. Bromley again put his head down and led the 125cc Modified class from start to finish. Pennsylvania rider Ryan Connelly ran second while Bromley’s brother, Joseph, had to fight off Evan Fields for third. Austin Luczak finished off the podium for the first time this week with fifth; however, he did take top honors overall.

Nick McFadden won the first race of the day as he topped the podium in both the 85cc DTX 9-13 and 85cc Mod 7-11 classes. McFadden had struggled earlier in the week, but was on his game as he took to the track today.

Cameron Smith led most of the laps until he lost control right before the second jump. Brayton Lynch and Devin Owens were both able to get by Smith, but the Conti rider was able to hold on for third. That was enough to win him the championship.

McFadden was quick off the line in the 85cc Mod 7-11 class; however, Cody Kent jumped the start resulting in the riders lining up for another try. McFadden kept his cool and jumped back out to the lead. Colbert, Washington, rider Wyatt Anderson and Bronson Bauman fought for second with Bauman finally winning out. Davis Fisher and Andrew Luker rounded out the top five. In the 85cc Mod 7-11 class, McFadden just couldn’t be stopped. From start to finish, he didn’t slow down. Meanwhile a battle for second was happening behind him between Bronson Bauman and T.J. Masset. No matter how hard he tried, Masset couldn’t get past Bauman and

had to settle for third place. Hey MRA Readers, Hopefully everyone is having a busy but good summer in 2008. My summer is going a lot better then 2007, considering I sat around most of that summer with a broken ankle but it definitely could still be better this year. We have been super busy traveling all over the country racing the GNC Professional series trying to crack my first main event and move up some spots in the championship. Lately all we have been racing have been the 750 twins. I like the 750cc motorcycles a lot, but they are just not something I am used to. I am not used to the motorcycle and mostly I am not used to the tracks we have been racing them on. I am getting really close and learning a ton each race we go to, but I just wish we could have a throw away year and then press re-start and redo the year all over again with all the experience we learned. Obviously, that can’t happen.

gas”. The winner got a gas card, which was cool. I want to thank the BCTRA and Carroll Fuels for the gas card. I lined up for the first final and after I passed a couple of riders, I settled into 2nd and slowly started to catch my good buddy Brandon Robinson for the win, but finished 2nd. The last final of the night was the 450 pro final. My bike was running really crappy and the clutch was starting to slip real bad. The bike was trying to throw me off and when I was running 2nd on lap 3, it finally succeeded. I don’t remember much. I woke up and they decided to put an IV in my arm and send me to the emergency room in case of internal bleeding. After a LONG night at the hospital in Baltimore, I left with a broken right thumb, a conussion in my stomach(internal bruising), and a concussion. I wasn’t too impressed with the hospital. I thought it was the hospital from you know where for a while there. They went through like 5 IV’s after they kept breaking and putting them in wrong and the guy who issued my cat scan must have been an ex-boxer because all of his teeth were missing! Surely wasn’t a good experience. The good news is I am doing ok, I’m just a little sore and banged up. I decided to sit out this weekend’s national in Greenville, OH. It was a tough decision, but my hand is pretty swollen and I don’t want to take the chance of getting hurt more and be out for even longer. I will be back for the Hagerstown national on July 26th. The 750’s are freshened up and ready to go! Hopefully everyone can come down and check it out. It is the first race track of the year, that I have raced at before on the 750, so that gives me some confidence already. Plus, it’s the closest national to home of the year! Then we are going to freshen up our 450 arsenal and we FINALLY have our next 450 national in Billings, Montana on August 2nd. The second half of the year should be a good one for me. I have raced at a couple of the tracks before(Hagerstown, Monticello, Springfield ST, Topeka). I also get to race two Springfield Miles Labor Day weekend and also the Indy Mile in September. In the meantime, I have been training pretty hard on my mountain bike and also doing weight training as much as I can. My RM-Z 450 trail bike has been out of commission for a week or so, but my good buddy and sponsor Joe Bromley of Bromley’s Suzuki (Bromleys.com) is going to fix it up for me, so I can continue training on that for the upcoming 450 nationals and especially for Peoria TT which is on Aug 17th. Kenny Coolbeth is currently leading the overall series. He won the race in Tennessee and also in Kansas on July 4th. Joe Kopp has been super strong as well. He won the double-header at Bedford, and Lima and he also podiumed at Grove City. Bryan Smith ran away with the final at the Grove City mile. Chris Carr has had some pretty good finishes as well. His recent 2nd at Grove City has been his best this year. The point standings in the 750 class look like this. Kenny Coolbeth has 111. Joe Kopp has 104. Bryan Smith has 103. Chris Carr has 80 and Sam Halbert has 59. It definitely seems like the top 4 are spacing themselves away from everyone. Jared Mees has had even more horrible luck this year then me and the usual title contender is running 7th with 53 points. My goal for the year which was to be a top 20 rider my first year is still in sight as the 20th place rider right now has 16 points.

I was racing the local Timonium outdoor series this past Wednesday. A lot of good competition showed up and I won both my heat races by good margins. I also won the first ever “dash for

We raced in Tennessee, Bedford(Pennyslvania), Lima(Ohio), Kansas, and Grove City(Ohio). I had some good and bad finishes at each event. I guess I didn’t have a “good” finish at any of them. Well, what I consider good, but we ran good is what I can say. I was leading my semi at Tennessee and I kicked my bike into a false neutral and got rear-ended. I worked my way from last place but could only manage a 5th in my semi after coming from 12th. Bedford, I had a front row start in my heat race and felt awesome all day long but I had some stupid luck with stepping in mud before my heat race and getting it all over my footpegs and faceshield and I missed the main again there by a couple spots. Lima and Grove City, Ohio were both huge learning races for me. Lima was my first real cushion half mile on the 750 and I didn’t feel super slow, but I definitely wasn’t fast enough to run up front. I felt we could have run a lot better there, so that was a big disappointment. Grove City was a cushion and my first mile. It was a roller coaster of a weekend. I felt competitive in the beginning, then struggled in the middle, and finished off descent in my semi. Kansas was a really cool track. I went there all by myself since my sister was racing in Duquoin, Illinois. I didn’t quite know how to set my bike up, so it definitely wasn’t doing things to my liking. I was running well in my heat race, but the motor was going sour and we found a big chunk of dirt in my carburetor. I think with a front row start in my semi, we could have put it in the main event, but I had to start on the back row outside, and after a stupid long battle with Henry Wiles, I could only manage a 6th in my semi. So, that has been my luck on the 750’s in the twin’s series. I feel good on the motorcycle, I just need to get the first final out of the way, and so I can relax and get some confidence. I have been racing 450’s my whole life, so I know I can win on them, but the 750’s are still a learning process for me, but I’m going to keep pushing.

Patrick is a local expert rider that has aspirations of going pro and he is currently racing Pro Am events in the hopes of obtaining his pro card. Patrick like many of us got their start racing because someone in our lives (mom or usually dad) influenced us to swing our legs over a bike. Patrick’s dad Brian was an A rider in District 7 back in the 80’s so the natural course was for him to get his son a dirt bike. Patrick started riding at the age of seven and he made it to his first race by the time he was 10. He said he really didn’t get serious about it until he was 13 and that must have been the case because he won the D7 85cc (12-13) title that year. Since then Patrick has focused on his racing and has won a few Maryland State Championship races. He has been competing in the MDRA since its inception and he moved up to the expert divisions in 2007. Last

year he qualified and competed at Loretta Lynn’s and finished 24th in the Four Stroke division while suffering mechanical issues in MX Lites A. This year Patrick made the Deans List while attending Hagerstown Community College majoring in Business Administration. His goals for this season are to earn enough points to get his pro card and it appears he’s off to a good start. Just prior to this interview he finished third in 450 F and 6th in 250 F at the Unadilla Pro Am. The whole Wastler family travels to the races with Patrick and they support him 100%. It’s what they do. Patrick asked that we thank all of his sponsors for getting him where he is today. I’d say keep an eye on this young man from Maryland, he’s moving thru the ranks and he scored his first expert win just a few short months ago. My bet is, he’s going straight to the top. Moving on, as discussed above, as the four stroke engine moves through its cycles, the valves are opened and closed by a camshaft. This camshaft sit directly under the valve cover ( the top case you see under the gas tank ). There are several ways that the camshaft opens and closes the valves. The older way is through a rocker arm assembly. (See Picture B)

Four Stroke Motorcycles. Defined. Fast forward to today and the four strokes dominate the scene. With the influx of the four stroke comes a whole new set of maintenance requirements. I hear it all the time at the shop …”I didn’t know I had to do that?” “I could do a top end on a two stroke but not these four strokes.”

This design usually uses a centrally located camshaft that has both the intake and exhaust lobes on one shaft. (See Picture C). As the rocker arm follows the lobe design of the cam it transmits that motion onto the valve which opens the valve. Normally the valve is closed by the valve spring, but not always.

Well what we are going to set out to do in the next several issues is to define a four stroke and its components, show you proper engine maintenance, and show you how to rebuild the top end. So, the place we are going to start at today is Defining the Four stroke engine. The four stroke engine derives its name from the four separate and individual strokes it goes through to produce power. These are: induction stroke, compression stroke, power stroke and exhaust stroke in that order. We will take a look at these respectively. During the induction stroke the intake valve is opened by the cam shaft as the piston is traveling down the bore and the cylinder is filled with air and vaporized fuel. Next, as the piston is at the very bottom

The next type, usually used in more high performance applications, is type A above, in which the cam sits directly over the valves. In this application you have two cams, intake and exhaust, that sit directly over the intake and exhaust valves. There is usually a follower or bucket between the cam and valve that holds a shim used to adjust valve clearance. Usually it is under the bucket and sits in a

The third type is pretty uncommon to us, but we will cover it. It is the push rod type. In this application, the cam is located in the lower region of the engine cases and transmits its motion through a push rod that runs up along the case, usually through a tube to a rocker arm and then to the valve. of the bore, the intake valve closes and the piston begins to rise in the bore compressing the volatile mix of air and fuel. Once the piston reaches the top of the bore, the air and fuel is ignited by the spark plug and trusted back down the bore; thus the power stroke. And finally, once at the bottom, the exhaust valve is opened and the spent gasses are exhausted and the four cycles are repeated. Now not to over simplify this process, as there are many other things taking place, like ignition timing and cam timing, but this is what takes place to produce forward momentum. (See Picture A)

2 Up Mini’s brought Saturday night pit bike racing to Sleepy Hollow.

Round # 7 of the MDRA Series made it’s way to Sleepy Hollow on the tail end of the 4th of July holiday. There weren’t any fireworks in the air that Saturday night as you might expect, but there were plenty on the race track come Sunday afternoon. Many classes were loaded with great racing action with battles thru out the day. There is so much great talent out there right now in both the Supermini and School Boy divisions and before you know it many of these young racers are going to be turning expert. I almost can’t wait until next season as I know so many of these guys I have watched come up thru the mini ranks are going to be moving up. I have to say I believe the talent pool is larger than it has been in years and the racing is just going to get better. Stay tuned for next issue when we’ll see how our local fast guys faired at Loretta’s and we’ll see who’s moving up and moving on. Thanks to Sleepy for hosting another great event. Fuel – Part 1 Last month we talked oils this month the topic is fuel. A lot of people are under some misconceptions when it comes to fuel so let’s see if I can shed a bit of light on this month’s topic. Back in the beginning; say early 20th century gasoline was that part of crude oil that boiled away at a specific temperature. Octane ratings for that particular gasoline were in the 50 range. It was discovered in the 1920’s that adding 1 to 2 grams of tetraethyl lead, an organo metallic compound, to a gallon of gasoline boosted the octane to around 78. This was huge at the time as it allowed for the construction of more fuel efficient vehicles as compression ratios could be raised significantly. Of course as we all now now lead is a bad thing so it has gone the way of the Dodo. Today gasoline octane ratings are achieved through the increased use of more aromatic compounds like toluene or more commonly through the addition of MTBE. Improvements in the combustion chamber designs have also helped extract higher performance without the need for very high octane numbers. To power a spark ignition engine we need a volatile mixture, a mixture that has to be adjusted to suit the conditions the engine is operating in. I’m sure we’ve all heard of winter grade gasoline. In cold conditions we need a fuel that can evaporate quickly to form a combustible mixture. The addition of extremely volatile compounds such as propane or pentane are blended at higher percentages to aid in cold winter starts. The same fuel in the summer however would cause problems such as vapor lock due to it’s high volatility and evaporating in fuel lines so the percentages of these compounds are reduced in the summer months. These highly volatile compounds are the ones you hear every time you open your gasoline container, that Pshhh is the escaping volatile gases. Pump Gasoline is made up of a huge variety of different molecular

Heat is merely a measure of molecular motion. The hotter the gas the faster the molecules are moving. With Hydro-carbon structures this increased motion leads to combustion. Hot metal parts such as the piston and head heat the fuel mixture and compression further heats it until the fastest moving molecules carry enough momentum to knock weakly bonded hydrogens off the least durable hydrogen structures, once combustion begins much more rapid heating and compression occur in the still unburned portion of the fuel mixture, now even durable hydro carbons are broken up along with reactions with oxygen molecules which create highly reactive fragments that accelerate the process. Octane number is not a rating of a fuels energy but rather its ability to resist detonation. There are some among us who have experienced the end result of detonation but what exactly is it. Detonation is an abnormal form of combustion. Combustion is a process that should occur in a smooth controlled fashion as described above but when the process is upset by accelerated heating which creates increased pressure on the end gases, those gases furthest from the spark plug, then the end gases can spontaneously combust creating a secondary flame front. These two flame fronts moving toward each other at the local speed of sound - pretty darn fast in this heated environment - will further compress the unburned gases between them creating a critical percentage of reactive fragments. With the fuel and oxygen in this hair trigger state the mixture now becomes explosive. These miniature explosions can reduce a piston to rubble in a very short period of time. Detonation announces itself as a “tinking” sound which is more audible in large displacement engines than in smaller ones. The most common reason for detonation is using a fuel with too low an octane rating. Always heed the specs supplied in your manuals.
