Hello Race Fans

Well, this is it. Your last issue of MRA, at least for 2006. The old cliche, “Oh How Time Flys”, especially when you have 10 deadlines a year. Before you know it another month is gone, then another year. Anyway, this is the final issue for 2006. It’s been another fantastic year of racing and relationships. We hope we have met your expectations. We strive very hard to bring you the best amateur race coverage around. We are always open for suggestions and by all means, please feel free to contact us and let us know what you would like to see in the pages of MRA. We take January off then come racing right back in early February with our Pre - Motorama issue. That issue kicks off the race season here in central PA and will be chock full of important information to get your season off on the right foot. As in 2006, for 2007 all MDRA members and District 6 motocross members will recieve a copy of MRA with your paid dues. We will again cover both of your race series in addition to schedules, rider interviews, training and maintenance tips and just about anything else motorcycle and atv related. In addition we are talking to the Flat track people about their membership and for all you off road racers we are contemplating a special deal for you to get a discounted subscription to MRA. Keep your eye’s and ears open, I’m sure there will be a promotion right around the corner.

Our Advertisers:

I would like to wish everybody a great off season and please enjoy the Holidays responsibly. We look forward to seeing you all back here in the coming years. I would ask that you all think about the advertisers in MRA when it comes to your gift giving season. The advertisers and promoters in these pages go way above the call of duty when it comes to keeping your favorite past time alive. Please give them a fair shake when it comes time to spread the love. I would also like to thank every single person that either reads, contributes too or advertises in these pages. We publish this paper to help keep the sport glued together in our little neck of the woods, without all of you many things wouldn’t be possible. Well, thats about it for now. Enjoy the break and we’ll see you in the new year.

Until next time.

Bryan Moffitt PA State Hare Scramble Series

Age: 31 Hometown: Glennville, PA Race #: 1 Ride: KTM 200EXC Class: Vet B Experience: 3 Years Racing Fav. Food: Steak Fav. Racer: Mike Lafferty, Jason Raines Sponsors: Off Road Cycle Supply, Canyon Thanks to:

Motorsports, Blettner Power Sports My Wife and Robbie Leese - For pushing me and making me work hard. The Smith and Mummert Families - For their support and for giving me a place to ride.

Vet B Champion in both PA States and District 6, Sportsman of the Year, along with his wife Patti. Father, brother, uncle and friend to many. That would be the definition you would find if you looked up Bryan Moffitts name in the dictionary. I met Bryan and his family last year while attending a motocross race. He and some of his family members were there on an off weekend to ride a practice day. I’m not sure if Bryan was riding that day or not, but he was there to support his nephews and other friends that he races harescrambles with. Just a few short years ago Bryan bought his young son Hunter a bike to race harescrambles with. Bryan had never been a racer but he had family members that were involved with the sport and he thought he would let his son give it a try. After a few races Bryan thought it looked like fun and he wanted to support his son, so he bought his own bike and gave it a try. That was three years ago, since then Hunter decided that racing wasn’t really his thing, but Oh boy, did his dad ever get hooked. Bryan fell in love with the sport and has been pursuing it ever since. Hunter still enjoys going to the races, but it’s mainly to cheer for his dad and his cousins. The result, as you can see above. Bryan has made many friends, he earned this years “Sportsman of the Year” award in the PA State Series and he overcame much adversity to win his first ever championship while racing motorcycles. Bryan raced thru three concussions this season to earn his # 1 plate. More importantly Bryan told me that he has built many great relationships along the way over the years. That he has enjoyed racing against the other great competitors in the Vet B division. That he looks forward to next year and the expert division. Bryan wrapped up his state title back in October and he was doing so well there he decided to continue chasing the District 6 title. Again success, but Bryan gives it all away, he would like to thank his wife and friends that continued to support and push him thru the season. Without them he’s not sure he’d be where he is today. Next years goal - a top five finish in the Vet A division and to stay healthy. We would like to thank Bryan for his time and to wish him and his family the best in all that they do. Watch out for this Vet racer next season, my bet is he’ll be right there towards the top of the heap. Jim Bull MRA

ULTIMATE MX HOTSHOT Name: Event:

Erik Wilson D6 Ultimate MXSeries

Age: 15 Hometown: Phillipsburg, NJ Race #: 22 Ride: Kawasaki KXF Class: 125 B and 250 B Experience: 9 Years Racing Fav. Food: Cheese Steaks Fav. Racer: Ricky Carmichael Hobbies: Basketball Sponsors: Wilson Drilling, MSR, RRP, Twin Air, Scott USA. As you already know, this year we’ve been changing up our Hotshot columns from month to month in the hopes of reaching more racers from more disciplines of racing. This month we looked back to our roots, we looked at motocross racers. Most logically, we looked to the District 6 Ultimate Motocross Championship Series. What we found there was a young man named Erik Wilson. I’ve been watching Erik all year and have been trying to get him in an issue. I could just never seem to get to the same event where he had either finished first or more often the case, that I got a good shot of him to use in the paper.. We finally got Erik in the last issue and believe it or not, it wasn’t a motocross event, it was Round #12 of the PA State Harescramble Series. Not only is this kid a great motocross racer, but he has the endurance to last 2+ hours on a knarley harescramble course and finish at the top of the class. After talking to Erik and his family for a while it all made sense. Erik’s dad was a rider and what do dads do that ride? They get their kids bikes to ride. At the young age of 6 Erik got his first ride, a Honda Z50 . At that point Erik spent a few months riding around his back yard in New Jersey to get the hang of things. Then it was off to his first race, a harescramble. Of course the rest is history, Erik and his family have been traveling to the races ever since; it’s harescrambling in the spring and fall, and motocross in between. Erik has won a few track championships over the years, but this season, one of his sponsors, Rossini Racing Products convinced him to give the Ultimate MX Series a try. The result? Two class championships, 125 B and 250 B. The competition is fierce in these two divisions. This year many of the fastest mini and C class racers have moved up and these are the classes to watch. Erik has been consistently finishing up front and he has captured two crowns for his efforts. Congratulations to Erik, thanks for the interview and we wish you the best in the future. Keep an eye on this guy, I believe he is going places and watch out next year, you just might be the next MRA - Kenda Tire Hotshot. Jim Bull MRA

pagoda motocross

Season Wrap Up • October 29, 2006 • by MRA The Pagoda Motorcycle Club held their last motocross event of the year in late October on their grounds in Birdsboro, PA. This has been a year of many firsts for the crew from Pagoda. 2006 saw their first ever night Supercross race as well as their first ever Pit Bike race, again under the lights. They’ve stepped up their offerings in the way of more practice days prior to events and they’ve offered more activities on those two day weekends, including volleyball and horseshoes and how about those hand wash stations by the porta potties, all good stuff. More importantly, Pagoda has also sponsored and helped to raise money for some of our fallen riders this year. They are a club that is involved, and I’ve seen many strides by their members to help make Pagoda both a great place to race and to socialize. This last motocross event of the season, held on a beautiful fall day was well attended and as usual the track was in top notch shape for a day of racing. Close to two inches of rain had fallen in the days prior to the event, but with the help of Mother

Nature and the Pagoda track crew, the dust was flying by mid day. The start continued to be muddy all afternoon, but the rest of the track shaped up nicely. Number #1 plates were awarded at the mini track for their season long series. Doug Zapf took the 50cc (4-6) Oil class championship with Savion Terry getting the honors in the 50cc (7-8) Oil group. Garrett Beam was the big winner taking home two division wins, one in 50cc (4-6) Stock and one in the XR 50 class. The action was intense up top on the main track with great racing going on in most divisions. Check the results here to see how your favorite racer faired and be sure to check our website at mcracingaction.com to preview complete event photos. Well, that’s another successful season in the books for the Pagoda Motorcycle Club. Stay tuned to their website and the pages of MRA to get all the dirt for their upcoming 2007 season. We’ll see you then.

Eric Krout sweeps the 25+ B division.

Mini racers leave the gate at Pagoda’s Mini Track. MRA sponsored Damian Thompson wins both 65cc (7-9) and 65 Jr. Mini.

Mel Fioravanti (72) goes 1-1 to win the Vet C division.

David Hall takes the X bike to the Vet B win.

Results:

Brian Weimer (62w) leads the 250 B group to the checkered flag.

I believe you got your first win as a pro this season, is that correct and how did it feel: Yes I got my first ever pro career win, in Nashville, TN. The feeling was awesome, starting from the pole, and leading every lap was the best part.   How does Supermoto compare to flat track: I bring a lot of what I learned from flat track to my supermoto racing. I could list everything that I learned from flat track and use in supermoto but it would take hours to read. Flat track is a great sport, and I still love it, but after winning everything I could in 2004 as an amateur, I had time to try different things. I tried a little bit of road

Lewis on the factory KTM. racing and supermoto, but supermoto is what I started to like. I liked the fact that you were still on a dirt bike, like a flat track DTX bike, and you got to slide around a lot. But I always liked TT’s and I liked to jump. So supermoto just fit me. I have plans to race flat track professional in 2007 since the AMA Supermoto series doesn’t start until June, so you’ll see me at Daytona! Which do you like best: It’s hard to say, one day I’ll be riding supermoto, sliding around to the right and the left, jumping doubles and triples with slicks, but there is still a side of me that loves the way it feels when you are sliding it around on a flat track bike. It’s a totally different feeling. I don’t think I would change the way I grew up, starting with dirt track first and then going to supermoto, I wouldn’t be as fast as I am today without flat track.  Finishes this year: The season started in Fontana, CA, it was the first time I raced the Unlimited Bike and I still had a lot to learn. But with some luck, I got my first ever pro career podium with a third place finish. Going into the second round I had a broken hand from riding at the teams test track the week before the race. I had a lot of pain but still managed to get a ninth place finish. Round 3 was one of my favorite tracks and the track I have ridden the most on. USA International Raceway in Wisconsin, I raced an amateur supermoto race there in 2005 and then my first professional supermoto race in 2005 was also at that track. With my hand being broke 3 weeks ago I was still sore but it was feeling a lot better than at round 2, plus the dirt section was a lot smaller. I came away with a fourth place finish. Round 4 was Salt Lake City, an all new racing facility with a road race track and a supermoto only race track. The supermoto track had two dirt sections with whoops, triples, doubles, tabletops and it was almost 2 minutes long. I crashed 4 times in 3 practices and I wasn’t feeling like this was going to be a good track for me. Starting on the second row but inside, I got a great start into third. Going into the dirt my teammate and points leader crashed, leaving me with some breathing room. By lap 3 I was still right with the 2005 Unlimited Champion Micky Dymond, and on lap 5 I passed him for second. When I crossed the line, I finished second place, for my second

podium of the year. The next stop forward to the race, it was where I had was Michigan on July 8th; I think my best result last year on the 250, a 4th it was one of the hottest days of place finish. I knew this year it was going the year. In practice I had a huge to be a lot of fun, the track was made high side at the top of a hill going from a 5/8 mile asphalt oval. It allowed a about 70mph. I got up right away lot of room to open the big 610s throttle, but when I got back to the truck we were hitting speeds of over 100 mph I wasn’t feeling so great, I think on the straightway. All day I was running every part of my body was sore. I 5th place times, but in my last qualifier, had a tough weekend and walked things just clicked and I ran the fastest away from the race with a 7th time of the day for an Unlimited bike and place finish. Round 6 and 7 were got the pole position for the race. It was in Denver Colorado at the Mile only my second time I started on the front High Foot Ball stadiums parking row, and my first ever pole. Off the start lot. The track was one of the of the race Micky Dymond crashed in the coolest all year, with a huge up hill first turn and I took the lead. I then lead and down hill jump from one parking lot every lap to win my first ever professional to the next. The asphalt was super slick, race. It was a long year and I learned so but the dirt section was awesome, 14 much about racing, but also, so much supercross whoops and big berms. Friday more then just racing. I ended 2006 with night wasn’t the best; I was having trouble 4th in the championship, 3 podiums, and with traction and I only got a 6th place one win. finish. On Saturday I woke up and saw that it had been raining all night. When we got to the track, some people were saying that they were going to cancel it because they didn’t have a way around the dirt. But being in Denver the air is so thin and the weather changes in minutes, it started to dry up and only 2 hours behind schedule. the 250s and 450s were out qualifying with out practice since they rode the track the night before. But my First Pro Supermoto Win, Nashville, TN luck, right before we go out for qualifying it starts to rain again. October 14, 2006 The dirt was good for about half of the section but then it turned Plans for next season: to mud, I rode threw it for my first front I will be racing for Factory Red Bull row starting position in 4th. Once again KTM again in the 2007 season. I am the rain stopped and dried up for the 450s really happy that I will be in the Unlimited first race, then the 250s race was half way class for my second season; I feel that it through and it started to rain. The dirt was is a smart deal for me. Staying in the class getting better and better for them, the will allow me to learn more for the 2008 rain was watering the dirt just enough for season were I plan on moving to the 450 them to get really good traction. By the Supermoto class. Riding the bigger bike end though, the dirt was starting to turn to (610cc), takes time to learn how to ride, mud. It didn’t stop for my race, and it was with such a powerful motor, it teaches nothing but mud in the dirt section. I got a me to use the power smoothly. Riding the good start but the French Ice champion Unlimited class again in 2007 I should got a better one, I was running second have good results and maybe even a but then ran off in the whoops and lost Championship two spots. I then passed my team mate Any plans to road race or other back after he fell going down the 100ft disciplines in the future: down hill, then he passed me back when Things change but I don’t really see I did the same thing the next lap. By the myself road racing, I like supermoto a lot, end of the race I had no goggles, my its one of the safest types of racing and hand guards were flips up, my face was it involves almost all types of racing. I muddy, my leathers were soaked and my have always been one that tried different bike was a mess, but I finished my first types of riding, flat track, supermoto, road ever rain race with a 4th place. I was racing, hare scrambles, trials riding, and ready for a dry track after this race but just playing around on pit bikes. no, at round nine it was raining again, but Future Goals: this time there was no way we were riding Win AMA Supermoto Championships in the dirt section. So we ran just the asphalt section but with the metal ramps. Check out Johnny Lewis online at: It was the first time racing with the metal www.johnnylewis.net ramps in the rain. It was a faster rain http://www.sponsorhouse.com/ race then the race before in Colorado, members/johnlewis4  and finding speed and pushing your self was hard. I finished with a 5th place. Part 2 Water has always been the liquid of choice in cooling systems because it is an effective heat transfer fluid but it does have some shortcomings that today’s Anti-Freeze & Coolants (AF&C) have been designed to eliminate. Most obvious is that water freezes at 32 degrees F (0 degrees C) and boils at 212 degrees F (100 degrees C). Freezing was one of the first hurdles that engine builders sought to correct. A variety of materials have been added to water in an effort to lower the freezing point, things such as salts like calcium chloride did reduce the freezing point but were too corrosive. Sugar and honey were also tried but high concentrations were required and they tended to be too unstable and viscous. Kerosene was used as a total replacement for water but it damaged rubber hoses and it’s heat transfer capabilities were not as good as water plus it’s flammable, duh. Around 1945 denatured ethyl alcohol, methyl alcohol and ethylene glycol were the most commonly used anti-freezes. Within a couple of years ethyl alcohol fell out of favour and ethylene glycol and methyl alcohol gained control of the market. Both worked well as Anti-Freezes but as engine performance grew and engine temperatures rose accordingly methyl alcohol also fell out of use due to its low boiling point. Ethylene glycol when mixed with water in the right concentration will lower the freezing point and raise the boiling point. Add a pressurized cooling system and the boiling point is raised substantially. Today the majority of AF&C is ethylene glycol based. Propylene Glycol is seen in some AF&C’s and has the advantage of better compatibility with engine lubricants so it will not cause engine damage should internal leakage occur. A modern AF & C is made up of 5 components. 1) Base Fluid: This constitutes the bulk of the coolant and is usually ethylene or propylene glycol. The base fluid depresses the freezing point and raises the boiling point. 2) Corrosion inhibitors: Inhibitors are chemical substances added to the bulk fluid to prevent metals from corroding. Typical inhibitors are borates, phosphates, benzoates, nitrates, silicates and a couple with names so long I’d get a cramp typing them. These additives provide protection by means of a buffering action and alkaline reserve that neutralizes acidic products that may form as the coolant deteriorates with age or by entry of combustion products past a leaky gasket. Inhibitors are depleted with time which is why AF&C’s should be changed at specified intervals. 3) Defoamer: Foam in a cooling system is detrimental to heat transfer so certain higher alcohols, organic compounds or silicone polymers are added to suppress foam. These additives lower the surface tension of the liquid to allow the bubbles to break. 4) Dye: This is added to differentiate the coolant from other fluids such as brake fluid, engine oil etc. Any sudden change in the colour of coolant indicates contamination from some outside source. 5) Water: Coolant “concentrates” usually contain less than 5% water. This includes water of hydration from chemical inhibitors, water of reaction during formulating, water present in

the base fluid and water added to dissolve the inhibitors. Always check your coolant level between rides AFTER THE ENGINE HAS COOLED DOWN. After removing the cap, coolant should be visible above the core. If it has dropped below the core you are losing it somewhere, find out where as soon as possible. Today’s modern competition engines create a lot of heat and rely heavily on the coolant to help stay in one piece. Ignore any coolant loss at your own peril. Today companies like Silkolene, Motorex and Maxima, to name a few, all sell pre- mixed coolants. If you are one of the few who buy a concentrate and then mix it 50/50 with water remember to always use distilled water. Tap water

It’s that time of the year when many of us start thinking about putting away our rides here in the North East. Wouldn’t it be great if we had access to a product that would allow us to have traction all winter long? A product that actually does what it’s supposed to do. Yes, I’ve gone the screw route before and unfortunately after a short time of riding they all seem to be left along the track or the trail somewhere and your traction is back to next to nothing. While at the PA State Harescramble Banquet last month I was introduced to a new product that Works Enduro Rider from Great Meadows, NJ is offering this year. It’s called the “Best Grip” stud and you can actually take this new carbide tipped stud and use it over and over again.

MRA DECEMBER 2006 • 15

New Product Tip

The stud screws into your tire to offer you superior traction on the track or trail. This product offers a much larger thread design than a traditional screw to help retain itself within your tires. By looking at the product it works almost like a butterfly effect once it is inserted into the rubber. The beautiful part is that you can use them from one season to the next. Once spring comes and you’re back on solid ground, just remove the studs and save them till next year. In talking with Drew Smith from WER, they tried two sets recently at a mud and snow race in NY and had fantastic results with both sets. Neither bike lost a stud after a half an hour race and they appeared to be in great shape. I’m sure we’ll have more feedback once the weather starts to turn and there is more opportunity to test the product. Riders and racers, if you are looking to extend your riding season this year, give the crew at WER a call at (908) 637-6385 or online at www.werproducts.net to get the full details on this great new product

Round #18 • D6 Ultimate MX Series • November 5, 2006 • by www.mppics.com By Michael Pierson / mppics.com ATCO, NJ NOV 5 The final round of the 2006 District 6 Ultimate MX Series took place at Atco Motocross Park on the first weekend in November under mostly sunny skies, much different than when the first round took place at Atco back in March when it had to be shortened to a single moto format because of inclement weather. Several titles were still up for grabs heading into Round 18 and many riders advanced their overall position for the season with their finishes at Atco. The Supermini class ended up with the closest points finish for 2006, with Suzuki rider Frank Lettieri edging out Kawasaki rider Tyler Conner by just two points, showing just how important every race finish can be. Lettieri also earned the overall title in the School Boy class and finished third overall in the 85cc (12-13) class. Yamaha rider Garrett Beam started off the day only five points out of the lead behind Cobra rider Jacob Keane in the 50cc (4-6) Oil-Injected class. Beam had a 1-2 finish, which was good enough to take over the

lead and earn the title, while Keane had a 13-3 finish, good enough for second place overall for the year. In another close points battle, Derek Miller arrived at Atco with a two-point lead over Broc Rupert in the 85cc (14-15) class. Miller rode his Suzuki to a perfect 1-1 finish to claim the title, while Rupert had a 6-6 finish to earn second place overall for the season. The pressure was on in the 40+ Amateur B class with Kawasaki rider Edward Rapp holding on to a twopoint lead over Honda rider George Gilmour before the gate dropped. Rapp raced to a 1-2 finish giving him the title, while Gilmour earned second place overall for the year with a 4-4 finish. For complete photo coverage of the final round of the 2006

dutchmen mx park harescramble Bar Code Scoring • November 5, 2006 • by MRA

DMX continues to impress. In early November they held their next to last round of their fall harescramble series at their facility in Pine Grove, PA. What’s new for this round you ask? Well, for starters another new track layout, but the best change to date came in the form of bar code scoring. Harescramble racers from District 6 have been asking for this for years, and finally someone delivers. Even better news yet, it looks like the folks from DMX are going to make the system available for all of their events next year as well as working with the District and the PA State Series people to have it at most of their events. Did I mention they were only charging a buck ($1.00) for a bar code sticker? Anyhow, the crowd loved the new system. It allowed everyone to get home a little quicker and it sure makes scoring a lot more accurate. Many of the racers I spoke with also liked the fact that they now had a way to determine how fast they were compared to other racers in other classes. Remember, at a harescramble it’s not necessarily the racer that gets the checkered flag first that wins his event, it’s the racer that completes

the most laps in a allotted amount of time. It looks like the future has finally arrived in good ole’ central PA. The racing was again intense during this round of the series. We had mud in the morning and dust by mid afternoon. One thing that hasn’t changed is the battle we’ve seen all year in the Open A division. Once again, Ryan Rodgers and Wally Palmer went at it for two hours straight with Rodgers again getting the win. Harescramble racing is always a treat for me to attend, there are races going on all over the course but unfortunately many times I don’t have a clue who is racing who and in what class they are doing it. One things for sure, there is never a dull moment, the action is good and the rivalries are sweet. If you’ve never checked one out, I recommend you do. Maybe you could help me figure out, who is who.

Colton Bloser leads on lap # 1 of the Youth ATV race.

Zach Smith takes the win in the 85cc (12-15) division.

“DMX continues to impress.”

Tyson Thomas wins the Utility division.

Everybody loves to be in MRA!

Zach Easterly finishes 4th in 201 - Open B.

Brandon Hess checks out the electronic scoring on his way to victory.

Laying down a “no footer” over the table top - well kinda.

CAN MOTOCROSS CURE CANCER?! We all know that MX is a dangerous activity. Everyone that rides understand that the law of gravity is sometime stronger that we anticipate, and we understand the risk of injury. We actually embrace the fact that it’s “X’trem” and wear the daredevil etiquette proudly throughout our everyday life. Of course a lot of outsider pressure us to quit riding because it’s to dangerous, to expensive, you’re too old or too young, you’re too slow, you’re too crazy etc, etc. But, what about the positive effect of MX? So, to prove to the “outsiders” that Motocross is good for you, tell them the story of a Vet C rider, Melvin Fioravanti. Melvin is a 34 years old cancer survivor. He used his passion for motocross to help beat the deadly disease, and this is what he has to say…… “To start off with a brief history about myself. I started riding at the age of 12 when I got a 1982 KX 80 for Christmas. My father was a long time Pagoda member and loved Off Road riding. I found out I had cancer at 28 years old. I was having pain in my lower left leg and went to the doc for a look and that’s when I found out I had cancer ( Ewing Sarcoma ), a bone cancer in my fibula. After 2 years of painful chemo and radiation. They finally cut my Fibula out before cancer move any further. During my treatment I had time to reflect on life and from that point forward I decided to live life to the fullest and never regret anything. I had always followed MX and wanted to ride again, and especially start racing. The idea of racing was one of a few elements that help me keeping my head up and think positively, wish is the key to beat cancer. I won the battle and have been cancer

free for 5 years!! My wife Elaine was by my bedside during the 2 years treatments and she knew my dream was to get a bike. So one day I came home from the hospital, I opened the garage and there was a new 2001 KX 250 !! It was such a surprise that I cried like a little schoolgirl…. The happiest day of my life! If you are lucky enough to have your wife buy you a bike you know the feeling! So I started riding a lot with Jason Esterly and Guido Sica. I was ready to race in 2002. My first couple of races went o.k. I finished mid-pack a few times.

Then my 5th race ever I drove up to Hurricane hills with GP. We did the privateer deal and slept in the van. It was leaning on an angle and the bed was small. I slept with my feet above my head. Greg was laying the other way next to me. So I didn’t sleep to good (plus you never know with the French, lol ). The morning came, practice went ok. I had the first moto of the day. I got a 5th place start, flew into the back of the guy in front of me and went down. I got run over a few times and wound up with 5 breaks in my upper right arm. As they where loading me into the ambulance, my Wife Elaine showed up to the track just in time to follow the ambulance to the hospital… She was not happy!! After that I kinda put racing on hold and got into 50’s, until 2006 when I started racing again and doing really well. I went out and got a 2006 KX 450 F from Cross Road Powersport. The 4 stroke work well for me and I owe a lot to this bike for helping with my results.

Now I run the Vet- C Class. I had 2 Overall wins this year and held a 4th place average finish in 2006 and earned enough points to move up to the B Class! I’m happy to be riding (and to be alive!), and to have the opportunity to do what I love, after what I’ve been through in my life. My Crew: Tony Roth, Jimbo Wilke, Doc Jones, GP, Jason Esterly Riding with these guys makes me faster. They also push me to do things I normally wouldn’t do! Thanks guys! My Sponsors: OMS1, ASV, Twin Air, Acerbis, Factory Backing, VPE, Renthal, and Motoworld. com “ So remember, like Mel said, if you keep a positive attitude and keep you head up, you can beat anybody, even cancer… See ya at the track !!!

2006 pa state harescramble banquet Holiday Inn • Grantville, PA • November 11, 2006 • by MRA

The 6th Annual BP Promotions PA State Harescramble Banquet was held in early November at the Holiday Inn Grantville, PA. What an event this has evolved into. In talking with series promoter Joe Bromley before the banquet, he was concerned just a few short months ago that he wouldn’t be able to meet the attendance requirements needed by the Holiday Inn. About 10 minutes after the doors opened, Joes biggest concern was whether or not they were going to be able to fit everyone in the room that had bought advanced tickets, let alone the riders that had shown up at the door looking to participate. As luck would have it, all 400+ attendees found a seat and the festivities began. Doors opened an hour before the buffet meal was served to allow banquet goers to socialize and to browse the vendor displays set up by series sponsors. The series, in its 6th year continues to grow each season due to the combination of the dedication of the riders that participate along with the efforts of BP Promotions and the sponsors they have attracted. Major Series Sponsor MSR / Answer Racing and Pro Taper continue to pump thousands of dollars worth of product into the series to be used as awards and giveaways along with product credit and complete gear contracts. Each year four riders are awarded with complete gear contracts in addition to the credits that racers earn by riding in MSR and Answer gear. If you are not up to speed on this program, please contact someone from the BP Series to get all the details. They practically pay you to use their gear, and hey, most of us buy new gear each season anyhow. Why not get the best bang for your buck? On top of that, Kenda Tires

MSR / Answer Rep, Jerry Hasaka awards four gear contracts for 2007.

remains on board as the series tire sponsor and many local dealers and distributors make huge contributions to make your series what it is today. The evening started with a prayer and a fantastic buffet meal along with a great dessert table. At that point Joe Bromley gave an overview of the 2006 season and let everybody in on what they can expect for 2007. To the delight of the crowd at the top of the list is bar code scoring at most and possibly all events next year. The series will consist of 15 rounds and will include a National Harescramble and the Western PA Round of the GNCC Series. At the mid point of the series, the PA State will combine with an ECEA event to offer a little

shoot out, so to speak and BP promotions will again offer the Triple Crown Series within a series. All major sponsors are again on board and several additional new venues are on the schedule. There are some class changes and a new point structure for 2007 that should even the playing field no matter how many riders show up to race your class. Wow, can it get any better? Just ask the

rubber, and over tightening starts to rip out the rubber between the threads. You’re basically starting to “strip out” your hole. Put a dab of crazy glue on each screw before insertion. It’s a time consuming and sometimes-messy process, but it helps. Check with your dealer for certain types of grip glue to save some money. Pro Taper and “grip it” brand are basically the same type of adhesive and costs a lot less. See the diagram for suggested pattern of screw placement for best results.

It’s here. For many of us, the dreaded time of year is back. Most tracks are closed. The days are short and it’s dark by 5pm. The ground is frozen, and ice and snow are on the way. Some of the lucky ones get to travel southward and find warm weather; others pack up their gear until spring or look for indoor riding. But the chosen few refuse to let old man winter keep them out of the dirt. If you’re one of these select few, here’s some help to keep your rubber side down this winter.

Tech Tips

Many of us have tried ice screws and haven’t had much success. It’s a slow and tedious process installing these little buggers, and a frustrating one if they don’t stay in. Of course, the easy way would be to buy ice tires, but not of all us can afford that route. Here are a few tricks to help. Most of these principles apply to bikes and quads. The very best way to keep your screws in your tire is install a second tire on the inside of your tire. A smooth sport bike tire works best. You’ll have to find the size that fits best and cut off the bead. Then find the correct length screw to go through your tire. The inner “liner” allows you to use a screw approx 1” in length. You may want to try a few sizes of some sheet metal screws lying around before buying ice screws. The reason most screws pull out is because they have such little rubber to grip into by merely imbedding in the knobs. If your going this route, install the tires and inflate to 30lbs before installing screws. Whether you decide to go with the inner tire or just put the screws into your existing tire, here’s some more tips: All you need is a cordless drill with a socket adaptor to fit your screws. It’s important to have a drill that you can control the speed (see below). You should still have fairly decent square edge left on your tire (if it’s not new). You want to get as many screws as possible in each knob; a badly rounded knob has much less surface area. -It’s extremely important not to overtighten the screws. As the flat surface of the screw head bottoms against your

The direction of the cutting edge of the screws is also important for a good bite. Again refer to the diagram and picture. The screw on your center knobs are set across the knob for traction during acceleration and braking, while the side knobs are angled for turning. The more screws you can get per know the better. The increases the number of screws in contact with the ground at any given time. The more screws contacting the ground spread the stress equally between them. ‘For example: If you have 5 screws touching the ground and a force of 1,000 lbs., that’s 200lbs per screw. If you have 10 screws in contact, the force per screw is dropped to 100lbs. The less force per screw the less chance of it pulling loose. Use as long as screw as possible. The more threads you have biting into your tire the less chance of the screw ripping out. If you’re not using the inner tire you’ll most likely use a ½” to 5/8” screw. If you’re not using the inner tire, it’s a good idea to cut an old inner tube and use it as a liner. Cut the stem out and cut away about an inch wide strip from the inner side of the tube (the area that would normally contact your rim strip). It’s a good idea to use a powder too to prevent chafing. Attention Readers: This month’s “Tech Tip” will keep you riding longer thru the winter. For another option to winter riding tire set ups, please check out the “Product Release” for WER’s new “Best Grip Sport Nail” on page 15 of this issue. “T” thanks for the great tips you provide our readers with each month. “The Word” by Jamie Jordan

Let’s face it, the money and the product that sponsors put up is a major factor as to why racers can and do race. In this issue I’d like to let you know about Larry Presgraves of Martinsburg Motorsports. During the past five years, in which Larry has worked at Martinsburg Motorsports,

thousands of dollars have been put up to sponsor the MDRA series, to sponsor races, and to sponsor riders. More importantly he is the person who helps with the cost of bikes, parts, and maintenance for us riders. In addition to the money, Larry spends countless hours helping out at the local tracks.

Larry is very familiar with the ups and downs of racing because of his son Bradley, who races. They travel just about every weekend for Bradley’s races. This has taken them to locations such as Florida and Tennessee (for Loretta’s).

If you’re in the need of a new bike or just need a few parts stop in at Martinsburg Motorsports. Talk to the man that will help you out in any way that he can, Larry Presgraves.

Look for the the Martinsburg Motorsports trailer at an event near you.

AMA to Launch Pro ATV Motocross Championship - Press Release November 13, 2006 PICKERINGTON, Ohio (Nov. 12, 2006) – The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and AMA Pro Racing have announced the creation of a new professional ATV racing championship set to begin with the 2007 season. The series will be based on motocross style c! ompetition and will feature 450cc machines. An expansion to include a 250cc-based class is expected for 2008. “With the continued sales growth and availability of sport ATVs in the United States and the expanding popularity of racing, the time is right to launch this championship,” said AMA CEO Patti DiPietro. “This discipline will receive the same level of support as our other pro racing series and will help elevate the awareness and professionalism of ATV competition.” A television package is under development as is a dedicated website. AMA staff is

preparing a rule book and homologation information. The 2007 schedule will feature up to 12 outdoor events managed by ATV-specific racing staff members. Five to six indoor events will be added in 2008. Transponder timing and scoring will be utilized. AMA staff is working with the major ATV manufacturers to establish a contingency program. An AMA Pro ATV Racing rules-making committee will also be created comprised of participants involved with the championship. DiPietro added that the new pro series will run in conjunction with current ATVA events and will create a better progression for amateur riders aspiring to become professionals. “We will issue pro licenses to top riders competing in ATVA competition,” commented DiPietro. These competitors will have the opportunity to earn an AMA Pro number one plate and be recognized as an AMA Champion.” More information about the championship will be issued in the coming days

A kid’s view by Chase Rusden

Hi Guys! This is Chase again. One of my last races was at the Dutchmen M.X. Park. It is under new ownership. The track has changed and they have barcode scoring. On the track they put in some new woods and also some motocross sections! I also recently did the Ridge Riders ECEA. When I got there that night, the weather was nice and I walked some of the track before it got dark and tried to get a good spot to start at. Right when I was about to go to sleep, mother nature showed us some stuff and it started POURING down rain. The next morning the track was as slick as bacon grease. I had a pretty bad start and every lap I tried to go faster. When I was riding in

the field sections, I stayed in the grass to get as much traction as possible. I really enjoy racing in the spring and fall the most because those races are usually muddy and the most challenging. Well, Got to go. See-ya!! Chase Rusden
