Blettner Power Sports Sponsored Cody Mummert Chases GNCC Crown
It’s Motorama Time!
Casey Clark had a Husky ride at last years Motorama, what will this year bring? PA State H.S. Champion Cody Mummert prepares for the 2007 GNCC Season. District 6 and Pa State Harescramble Champion Cody Mummert is ready to take on the Grand National Cross Country Series (GNCC) in 2007 on his Blettner Power Sports sponsored KTM 105. Mummert will take his D.E.F. powered KTM up against the best this country has to offer in the Big Wheel (14-15) year old division. Mummert resides in south central Pennsylvania and is a true contender in the upcoming 13 round series. Stay posted to MRA this year for updates on Cody’s progress and watch his results online at www.gnccracing.com. The 2007 GNCC series kicks off in early March in Vero Beach, FL.
Get ready; February 17 -18, 2007 is the official kick off of the racing season here in AMA District 6. For the past 29 years racers from all over the east coast converge on the Harrisburg Farm Show Complex to take part in the Motorama Indoor Races and Shows. It all started in 1979 as the Harrisburg Indoor Motorcycle Championships offering both motocross and flat track racing. Today the show is one of the largest in the north east and includes two days of Arenacross racing along with a host of other speed show related activities. Last year local Pro Casey Clark campaigned his Toy Tech Husqvarna against some of the best racers from the area. Rumor has it that Clark will be back this year riding a LVC / TBT Suzuki with his newly acquired National Number #97. If you’re looking for some great racing action in mid February then the Motorama is the place to be.

Hello Race Fans Happy 2007 everybody, I sure hope you all had happy holidays and a great off season. I hope even more that you are all ready to get back into another exciting season of racing here in our little corner of the world. We certainly look forward to bringing you another year of fantastic finishes as we cover all the great racing action that our area has to offer. As I sit here writing this it is mid January and the temperatures are still in the 50’s. I know many of you have never put your machines away this year and we are all wondering if winter is ever going to come El nino they say. Long Live El nino I say! For 2007 - MRA will continue as always to cover the racing you want to see. For all you motocross racers out there we will again be covering the District 6 Ultimate MX Series and the MDRA Race Series. In off - road racing action we will feature the PA State Harescramble Series and many of the ECEA rounds with photography by Tim Dennis. We have the District 6 Flat Track schedule on our agenda and new for 2007 we will offer a dedicated section within the pages of MRA to cover recreational off - road riding that will be billed simply as Rec Rider.
Don’t worry, we will not be pulling anything away from MRA. We are just expanding to cover the roots of our sport, the good old fashioned trail ride. It’s where most of us got started, out on some old railroad bed or riding an abandoned logging road in the mountains with our dads. Racing is at the heart and soul of MRA and it always will be, we’re just going to share the love with the rest of our cousins who choose to participate in a different form of our sport. You can check out a new website at www.recrider. com and tell a friend if you can. MRA photos will be out at the track again in 2007 grabbing all of the great angles for your viewing and purchasing pleasure. We will also be sending some new contributors out to cover your events so we can continue to cover more of your racing action. If you see a new face out there in one of our shirts with camera in hand, please welcome them and introduce yourself. I hear that photographers take more pictures of the people they know. You can stay tuned to www.mcracingaction.com for all the great images that will be created in 2007. Well it’s about time to get going, the season kicks off the weekend of February 17-18 in Harrisburg at the Motorama Indoor Races and Shows. We hope to see all of you there. Until next time.

Results: Kyle, in only his second year of racing won the DMX track championship as well as the PA State Harescramble title in the ATV Open C division. For 2007 Kyle will be moving directly to the A class to take on the best racers this area has to offer. Kyle’s future goals are to be able to compete in the GNCC Series against the best racers in the nation. At one of the last DMX races of the season last year after the inception of timed bar code scoring I was speaking to one of Kyle’s crew and he told me that Kyle’s lap times were right up there with the front runners. Matter of fact, Kyle signed up for the A division at the last event of the year, but mechanical troubles kept him from getting off the line with the leaders. I’d recommend keeping an eye on this young racer from Pennsylvania, my bet is he’ll be ready when he lines up this year on the front row at a race near you.

“Just for Fun…” Another Harescramble racer out to have some fun and coming home a champion. Andy Powers had been doing a lot of riding on his backyard track in 2005 and he went to his dad and he expressed a desire to try a race. So, ‘’just for fun” Andy and his family started hitting some of the local harescrambles. Andy was racing in the 110 Air Cooled class and his older brother Mitch started competing in the 85cc 12-15 class. Without planning it just so happened that these races were part of the PA State Harescramble Series. Andy ended up racing in 6 out of the 12 PA State Series Races in 2006, winning five of them and placing 2nd in the other. In most of the races he was one of the top overall finishers in the pee-wee divisions and he usually had second place locked down by at least a lap into the race. After a couple of races it became apparent that if he continued performing consistently that he could actually win his class. Andy did continue his winning ways and he actually wrapped up first place in both the Pa Series and the District 6 Series in his class. The main point is that this was always ‘’just for fun’’. There was no pressure from his dad, just go out and ride the wheels off your bike and have a good time slinging mud, and sling is what Andy did. As for this year Andy has again expressed an interest in running the series. So, the family is planning on loading up the trailer and truck, packing the coolers, calling grandma and grandpa with the schedule and they said we’ll see you all at the races in 2007! I’d like to congratulate Andy on his first full season as a harescramble racer. Andy went out with only one goal in mind and that was to have a good time. I’m sure the goal was met and along with it came a couple of racing crowns. I’d like to wish the whole Powers family a rip roaring good time in 2007, and racers, I’d like to put you all on notice - Harescramble Hotshots, we are looking for you.

toyota arenacross series
Round 6 • Baltimore, MD • January 12-14, 2007 • by Brett & Dave Hayes Baltimore Arenacross: Pastrana races again, Reynard and Johnson split race wins Leading up to the Baltimore Arenacross there was a lot of hype that Travis Pastrana might show up and race his first ever Arenacross event. While this may be his first official Arenacross race, many of you may remember watching Travis race Motorama on an RM 80. This was great news to many race fans especially since Travis is the hometown kid from nearby Annapolis, MD. After being off from professional racing since last years Daytona supercross Travis came out to have fun and put on a great show for the crowd. While all of downtown Baltimore was a buzz with the Ravens playoff game, the racing action inside the First Mariner Arena was spectacular. Even though all the hype surrounded Pastrana coming into the event, the real excitement came from Robbie Reynard and Chad Johnson. Friday night the Arenacross class was dominated by Team Free Nissan Honda backed rider Robbie Reynard. Reynard jumped out to an early lead, took the holeshot and never looked back. Pastrana struggled with his starts all day as he was on a RM 250 2stroke, while all the other riders were on 450 machines. After starting from the second row Pastrana came through the pack and had a hard fought battle with former supercross star Brock Sellards. Travis ended the race in seventh spot, not quite the result he was
looking for, but the Baltimore fans were just excited to see Travis back on the race track. Reynard ended the night on top of the podium with the defending series champion Chad Johnson in second and Arenacross Lites specialist Jim Neese rounding out the podium. Night two saw some of the best racing the series has seen all year. Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. Recalls 2007 KFX50 and KFX90 All-Terrain Vehicles Washington, DC (1/11/07) Description: The following product safety recall was voluntarily conducted by the firm in cooperation with the CPSC. Consumers should stop using the product immediately unless otherwise instructed.
TNT Cycles – Wiconisco, PA TNT Cycles is well known to the riders from the coal country just north of Harrisburg, PA. Tom Pickup and his son Tom Jr. have owned and operated TNT Cycles for 16 years. Prior to that Tom worked as a service tech at a Harrisburg Honda dealer for many years. When the shop he was working at got sold, Tom decided it was time to do his own thing. Tom had always dabbled around his home part time working on machines but in 1991 he made it official. The doors to TNT opened full time and many years later, I believe the best is yet to come. Tom Jr. has really gotten involved with the running of the dealership recently and I believe a whole new era of great customer service lies ahead. TNT offers a full range of services to their customers. They are a Kymco USA dealer offering a full line of ATV’s, Scooters and Motorcycles. They offer a well stocked parts and accessories department and their service department is second to none. Service is the backbone and

They have a dedicated engine rebuild room and they offer custom motorcycle design and fabrication. If general service is what you’re after, they do that too and you can get a state inspection while you wait. Out front they carry brands like Fly, Fox, MSR and Thor. They carry a full line of protective gear as well as Bell helmets and
if you need to get your machine ready for the trail they have ITP tires and wheels and a full line of ATV bolt-ons. Last year TNT was looking to add a line of ATV’s to their offerings. After researching and looking at several product lines, Kymco was the choice. They offer machines from 50cc right on up to a 500cc 4 x 4 utility model and everything in between. There is also a scooter line and a 250cc street motorcycle. Kymco is competitively priced and they offer a full 1 year warranty. Kymco has been successfully manufacturing parts for the powersports industry since 1968 and have just recently entered into the market with a line of their own. For details go to www.kymcousa.com. PA OHV Newsletter PA Trailrider Pennsylvania Trailrider Excerpts from the Newsletter of the PA OHV Association NO FREE LUNCH But what should $20 get you? Much has been said lately about the fact that we ATVer’s are compelled by law to send $10 a year to the state to register ATV’s, and the state then turns around and makes that money available to private riding area operators that charge us again to ride their trails. Is that as unfair as it may sound on the surface? Let’s take a look at what we pay to engage in other activities on public and private lands in our Commonwealth.
How about a trip to a state park? Camp and it will cost you $12 per night for a non-electric site on a weekday, and $17 a night for a powered site on a weekend. Rent a picnic shelter for $36 to $56 a day. Add $5 if you want electricity.
A brief footnote, Because of PAOHV’s interest and communication of this concern to the Secretary of DCNR, the Department has contracted with a legal firm to review the need for changes to the RULWA. This week they will review the recommendations and next week they will share their proposals with PAOHV. Any questions please contact H. Jack Clark or me, Fred Brown at fred-brown @comcast.net.
There was a time, not so long ago, when a person could roll their machine out of the garage, fire it up, and go for a ride. For some of you, that’s still the case, and you should count your blessings and do everything you can to protect that precious freedom. But for most of us, myself included, that kind of accessibility to riding is just a sweet memory. For an ever-increasing number of us, going riding means loading up and driving to a riding spot. There are still a few places you can go for free. At most of these spots, you get
Winter trail riding in North Central PA. Do you like to hunt? Pay a $20 fee for a hunting license and the State Game Lands, land under the control of the PGC, and private lands where you have permission to hunt are your playground.
what you pay for. Unregulated riding patterns, uncontrolled conditions, and the ever present risk of being caught and fined for trespassing are the price you pay. And for many, it’s worth the risk.
Do you want to fish? Buy a $22 license and you can drop a line into most of the state’s public waterways. Figure on dropping a few more bucks for a stamp that allows you to actually catch something. What’s that? You want to fish from a boat? Okay, register your boat with the Fish and Boat Commission for $18 to $50, (depending on the boat), and then you can put it on a lake or river.
Then there are trails on state or federal forests. Pay your $20 registration, (and on the Allegheny National Forest, a $35 annual fee), and you get access to some organized trail. Your money gets you a parking area, signed trails, and varying degrees of maintenance on those trails. It also buys you some enforcement for those riders who choose to endanger our riding privilege by not riding within the law, which helps make it possible that we can still ride there tomorrow.
Have a snowmobile in the garage? Like ATV’s, please remit a $20 fee to register your snowmobile for two years. In exchange, you get to ride a couple hundred miles of snowcovered roads/trails for a couple months out of the year.
address the highway and mass transit funding problem. That would be an ideal time for action on this proposal.
Lastly, there’s the pay to play areas- club grounds and a growing number of private riding parks. You’re going to pay to ride at any of these as well- whether in the form of
Navigating the woods at an off - road event inWestern PA. club dues, volunteer labor, or entry fees. But in general you’re going to be rewarded with a better experience. The fact is ATV trails and facilities are not cheap to build or maintain. Once I took a look at the other fees we pay to enjoy various kinds of outdoor recreation, I started to think that perhaps even if we’re paying a fee to ride, it still is not such a bad deal. That doesn’t mean we should stop working to minimize our cost while maximizing our opportunity. But it’s time we start focusing on what’s important to our sportpreserving it for the futureeven if it costs a bit. Heck, I’ll trade my fishing budget for a riding park pass any day! Let me close by quickly venting while we’re talking about costs. I’m always amazed how many of us think nothing of hundreds of dollars on some shiny gadget for our rides, but balk at spending pennies supporting the clubs that preserve our sport. I firmly believe that if you love to ride, organizations that work to improve our sport, like your local club and this association deserve your support. Its pocket change well spent, and the right thing to do. - See you on the trail.
LANDOWNER LIABILITY KEY TO EXPANDED TRAIL USE Over the past legislative session PAOHV has worked diligently to broaden landowner protection under the Recreational Use of land and Water Act of 1965. Under RULWA a landowner that opens their property for recreational use is not liable for injury suffered by
the recreational users if that landowner does not charge for the use. There are conditions whereby landowners can be held liable if an accident occurs should the landowner charge a fee for use. In addition, if a landowner fails to make the user aware of particularly dangerous situations. There are, however, deficiencies with the act that cause landowners not to be interested in opening their land. The amendments offered by Senator Robbins and Representative Bastian in the form of Senate Bill 1374 and House Bill 3028 respectively would allow the court to award attorneys fees to defendant landowners in cases where the case has been deemed to be without merit or have been dismissed. The only reason this legislation was not considered is because we ran out of time. Due to a shortened legislative lame duck session and due to the controversy caused by the opposition of the Trial Lawyers Association the bills died. More than 45 Republican and Democrat members of the House cosponsored House Bill 3028. Senate Bill 1374 introduced by Senator Robbins also received 16 bi-partisan co-sponsors. With the shake up in the House and Senate every PAOHV member is important in communicating the need to the new 55 new legislators. They are generally more conservative and therefore more likely to be receptive to this proposal. I would also tell you that I believe that due to the large freshman class little will be done outside the budget and the need to
SCORE 2006 “SECOND ½ ACTION” By Denny Mann By the time our members read this newsletter the SCORE grant will be one year old and one third complete. For me it is hard to believe that it is time again to reserve our spot for Motorama in February 2007. We will use this event to expose the existence of PaOHV and SCORE to the residents of Pennsylvania. We have learned many new tricks over the past year on how to bring the public into our booth so that we can discuss the Sensible, Courteous, Off-Road, Enthusiast ethics. The last show was the PSSA’s Snowmobile and ATV show in York PA on October 13th -15th and to date this was the best interaction with the public we have had. Thanks to the NOHVCC’s DickLepley and PaOHV’s Director Harold Silbaugh the SCORE booth heard from many OHV enthusiasts and a few DCNR representatives. It is quite evident that the feelings between the OHV user group and the DCNR are less than acceptable. I personally witness quite a bit of finger pointing in both directions. The complaints against the users by the Ranger were mostly over illegal OHV usage and a misunderstanding of what the OHV user views as quality recreation. These are the very issues that SCORE addresses and we must come together to change our tarnished image. This is a family sport being enjoyed for the same reasons that one would experience while hiking, horse back riding, or mountain biking. We all enjoy the great outdoors and what it has to offer no matter what we use as a mode of transportation. So the fact that a small percentage
To accomplish this and to inform the thousands of non-PaOHV members throughout the state we have setup the SCORE EZ-up @ the Michaux Enduro, Foggy Mountain Enduro, and the three day Quadfest @ Mountain Ridge riding park. But the time spent at Quadfest by far over shadows any other outdoor event we attended this year. Special thanks to Jill Moyher and the members of PaATVing for their work creating Quadfest and bring it to reality. Jill’s vision of rider ethics allowed SCORE to not only setup as a vendor but also present SCORE @ the event Friday and Saturday night. This was the largest riding event that I personally have ever attended and we are already dialing in our 2007 assault on Quadfest. The 2007 Quadfest will return to
Mountain Ridge Resort and for good reason. The trail system is perfect for an event of this magnitude. In 2006 Mountain Ridge offered 60 miles of trail for the Quadfest and I expect the mileage to grow for 2007. It was a true pleasure to see thousands of ATVs being used legally without any problems. What I witnessed was the future of our sport and a snap shot of the direction the sport is heading. With facilities such as Mountain Ridge the need for outlaw riding will disappear and by using this type of facility we will improve the image that the public has towards us. In closing the scheduling of various events throughout 2007 require volunteers manning our SCORE booth. This is a great way to promote a positive image and to have fun too. Anyone interested in attending Motorama or Quadfest next year as a volunteer should contact me @ 717-532-6439. 50 Miles of NEW ATV Trails in Pennsylvania at The Rock Run Recreation Area Pictures Courtesy of Skelly and Loy, Inc. Story by Eric Bruggeman Off-road enthusiasts riding in Pennsylvania will soon be able to experience some of the most awesome trail riding opportunities that Pennsylvania has to offer. The Rock Run Recreation Area will provide more than 50 miles of challenging All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) trails during the first phase of trail design slated to open in May of 2007. Offroad motorcycles (dirt-bikes) and side-by-side all-terrain utility vehicles will also be permitted. Trail expansion on the 6,200-acre property located in northern Cambria and
and dirt-bikes has been time consuming and has involved many stakeholders. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) provided 2 million dollars of funding from registration fees of the ATV and Snowmobile Fund to assist the Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority to help purchase the 6,200-acre, previously coal mined property in the summer of 2003. Once the Recreation Authority obtained ownership of the site, the planning stages were underway to develop the off-road facility. As a result, the Rock Run Advisory Board was deemed responsible for project oversight. Working together, the Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority and the Rock Run Advisory Board developed a master site plan for the ATV facility. The plan

This system allows powersports enthusiasts a convenient and versatile option when winching an ATV or UTV. The Wireless Control System includes an easy-to-use, ergonomically designed, handheld wireless control with two long-life alkaline batteries; a receiver with a built-in antenna for the fastest installation; a handlebar-mounted holster for the handheld remote; and all the wiring and hardware needed for easy installation on an ATV or UTV. This quality wireless control system will fit all current WARN ATV and UTV winches as well as all existing WARN winches equipped with a contactor and mini-rocker switch. It will meet FCC, CE and IC standards, too. Once installed, operation is a cinch. Simply press both of the handheld’s large, easy-to-read buttons for five seconds until the LED turns green, signifying the power is on. To begin winching, hold the appropriate button, the winch will activate and the LED will turn red indicating winching is in progress. If the system remains idle for five minutes, it automatically shuts off to preserve battery life and prevent unintentional operation. If your battery becomes low, the LED will begin to flash red during operation so you know to replace the handheld’s batteries. The long-life alkaline batteries are expected to provide years of service for even the most frequent users. -- more --

Tri-County ATV
OFF ROAD WITH ATV TRACTION Inc. My first meeting with the newly formed ATV Traction club, was in the spring of 2001. I’d read about the upcoming meeting in our local newspaper and decided I wanted to meet others with quads to find out where they rode. At that time they were just a bunch of friends meeting in Brian Mills’ garage in West Springfield Pa. Brian, the president and founder of the club, had been an ATV/motorcycle rider since childhood. He’d listened for years to complaints from the locals about no place to ride. It seemed everyone had back yard trails, but no one had conceived that these trails might some day be connected from one area to another. This became Brian’s dream. Home based in the North West corner of Pennsylvania, in Erie County, ATV Traction has grown to become one of Pennsylvania’s largest and most influential ATV organizations by uniting riders throughout the state. Our members have formed chapters in eight Pennsylvania counties, including Erie, McKean, Tioga, Potter, Mercer, Venango, Butler and Clarion. We currently send club newsletters to members in our neighboring states of Ohio and New York, as well as 7 other states. We think this is positive proof that the ATV image throughout our area is being changed through our dedication and hard work. . By expanding our club, we have expanded our riding opportunities at the same time. Currently three of our chapters have established riding areas designated as “members only” areas. The
Erie County Chapter has newly acquired lands near Edinboro, donated to us by several land owners in that area. These are back yard trail linked together to make an approximate 15 mile trail. In the McKean County Chapter of the club, they have permission to ride on land owned by Collins Pines. Many of the trails were old logging roads, some still traveled today. The land is breathtaking in many areas, and definitely worth the many hours they have put into making bridges and maintaining what roads are there. Our Venango County Chapter has two trail areas. One is 28 miles long and the other is 30 miles long. The reputation that Traction members made in this area, had land owners happily signing papers allowing ATV Traction to ride on and across their lands. On almost any given weekend, you could find club members working hard to clear garbage from eye sore areas in the county, building bridges and clearing brush and limbs from trails. Mention riding after any clean-up jobs, and you have a group waiting to help out on any given day. Being a member of a club of over 1400 members means that you never have to attend a ride or dice run alone. Even if you go alone, you will always be lucky enough to meet up with a friendly face or two by the end of the day. Many folks in the club have back yard trails that don’t really add up to hours and hours of riding time, but can still make a nice afternoon ride with a picnic and BS session around a campfire after.
Since we purchased our machines in 2001, all of our summer vacations since, have been with our quads; and most of those have been with new friends from the club. Five years ago I would have never pictured myself riding through the rolling hills of West Virginia, dodging snow flakes and mud holes in a thermal rain suit and boots. Nor would I ever think that I would be in the wilds of northern Canada cautiously watching for bear while searching for Moose in the lowland rivers and marshlands. Just this last September, six of us rented a log cabin in Michigan so we could ride for a week on the many well groomed trails they have. We snapped photographs of wolf tracks in the sand, with the sounds of Elk whistles coming from the next ridge. We never caught sight of any, but we sure knew they were there! We are finding that it is a wonderland of riding experiences out there, just for the taking. We joined ATV Traction to find places to ride, but we gained so much more than that. In our club we have riders and racers, poke-alongs and pacers. We have ages 8 to 88, with the average age in our club being in their mid 40’s. Creating a positive image is of utmost importance to us, but what fun we’ve had while doing it! If you don’t already belong to an ATV Club.... any club.....you should! Rec Rider attended the 4th Annual SSRT Winter Trail Ride in late December in North Central PA. The 1800 member group promotes safe and legal riding practices in the state of Pennsylvania as they work with DCNR to open up more trail riding opportunities for ATV riders young and old. The day was fantastic for a ride with bright skies and temperatures in the low 40’s. I’m estimating there were over 300 ATV’s out for the day’s event as the line seemed to go on forever as
they left the trailhead. To be eligible to ride all riders must have a DCNR registration as well as a club registration to ride on the trail system. Registered ATV’s and motorcycles only are allowed to ride the trails. (Sorry, no unregistered motorized vehicles allowed here, check elsewhere in this issue for those riding opportunities). The system is also open for bicycles, horses and hikers as well.

Indian Creek Valley Open House By Mark Lynch
Club members out on the trail.
The Indian Creek Valley ATV club located in Donegal, PA had its winter open house in late 2006. Many club members and their families rode the freshly groomed 16 mile event while 50+ non members enjoyed riding the Laurel Mountains of South Western PA. The club recently opened its new additional 150+ acre parking/camping area and ATV safety training / vending area for this event. Club President Mark Lynch, a long time ATVA
congressman stated that a $5,000 grant from Polaris helped pay for the freshly groomed trails and new trail head materials. “This is a great place to bring the whole family to ride; we have a little something for every type of ATV enthusiast in a private club setting.” For more information on ATV riding at Indian Creek Valley visit www.icvatvclub.com

WMX - WER Studded Tire Review Product Report – New BEST GRIP TIRE STUDS WITH CARBIDE TIPS
Date: December 31, 2006 Product: Mitas Off Road Tires; Sizes 80/100-21 Mitas C-17; 120/90-19 Mitas C-16; Best Grip Studs installed at setup from Works Enduro Rider; Approximately 240 front and 210 rear Bike: Ice CubeYZ315WMXtreme. com Pro Yamaha
We were excited receiving our new set of best grip studded off-road m/c tires. The crew at W.E.R performed a superior installation and setup. Initial look out of the box was “Mad Max is in town! “ We could not wait to mount them on our best-motored bike. We chose our WMX YZ315 Stroker RPMs.com Yamaha. Using H.D. Maxxis tubes, care should be taken to mount these babies’s up; we are talking about 250 studs on the front and 210 on the rear. I would suggest Mechanic Gloves or a similar facsimile. There are some serious offroad winter studs. The look it gives the motorcycle is unbelievable. Tire wraps should be used to move the bike on cement but cardboard or carpet will work also. Trail Report
Test Rider: John Wernsdorfer “JW” Test Sight: Lewis County Western Adirondacks; WMX North Headquarters, Harrisville, NY 13648 Conditions: 32 degrees with fresh 3-4 inches of snow over approx ¼ inch of ice and frozen dirt base.
From the start you feel uneasy and the look and feel of frozen surface can be tricky and unpredictable not to mention scary, but the Best Grip Studs M/C quickly gain your confidence and eliminates all these problems. These tires were inspiring, positive and tight right through all the gears. Nothing changes with speed except your fun level. With winter riding, conditions are constantly changing. With fluctuating temperatures come frozen ruts, rigid ice and varying snow conditions. Your speeds will vary also with wetter snow being usually more rider
friendly and more predictable. I put the tires to the test riding knarrly tight single track, with frozen rocks, numerous log crossing and semi-frozen mud holes. Then I jumped on to a wider, faster style ATV trail which includes dirt roads that were ice and snow covered. Nothing seemed to bother the best grip stud system, always
* Editors Note: JW from WMXTreme.com
The wear factor was also excellent with the front and rear tires showing no signs of stud loss and only normal wear on the carbide tips. With this in mind, these studs should last for several seasons with normal use and can be removed and reinstalled depending on your bike selection. If you like to ride and if you like winter, you will LOVE this product. My rating is 5 stars ***** Special thanks to:

Tech Tips
Setting your sag I’m sure you’ve heard this phrase before. For some riders, it’s one of the first things they do with a new bike, for others it’s still a mystery. I can’t emphasize how important your sag is for proper suspension performance. No matter how much you spend on shock re-valving, you won’t see the full potential unless you set your sag. Your sag also influences the performance of your forks and your bikes handling characteristics. Before you start, check your owner’s manual for the correct spring (both shocks and forks) for your weight and change as necessary. If you’ve had your suspension re-valved, the suspension shop should have recommended a spring change if needed. You can double check your spring rate below when we check the free sag. Basically, setting your sag is fine-tuning the tension on your rear shock absorber spring. Your spring has been designed to work for a specified weight range. Let’s say this range is 160-180lbs. Therefore, the setting (or sag) that works for a 160lb rider won’t work as well for an 180lb rider. Setting your sag is easy and can be accomplished with a few simple tools.
ring on your shock spring. I like to mark the collar against the spring so you see how many turns you are making. You can sometimes turn the spring to spin the collar, if not you’ll have to use the punch. It usually takes approximately 2-3 revolutions per 5mm of sag. Have the rider sit on the bike again and re-measure. It may take several attempts until you get the correct sag, but take your time and get it right. Don’t forget to tighten the lock nut.
R
MS and UV of RC Official ATV
For Bike & ATV Riders of all Age & Skill Levels
There are two types of sag, rider sag and free sag. Rider sag is measured with the rider sitting on the bike; free sag is measured with the bike alone. RIDER SAG (or RACE SAG) Place the bike on a stand to raise the rear wheel off the floor. Place your sag tool in the axle and set to zero, or if you’re using a measuring tape put the end of tape in the axle and write down this measurement. It’s not critical where you measure to; usually it’s along the edge of your rear fender or side panel. Next, have your rider sit on the bike (preferably in race gear). Take the measurement again. Make sure you take this measurement from the same spot. If using the sag scale, you can read the sag directly. If using a measuring tape, you’ll need to subtract this measurement from your first one. You now have your rider sag. A fill size bike sag should be between 95105mm, with 100mm being an average sag. A 65cc bike sag should be 70-75mm and an 85cc should be 85-90mm. If you need to adjust the sag, use a hammer and punch to loosen the lock
FREE SAG (or STATIC SAG) This measurement is taken the same way as rider sag, but this time measure the sag without the rider. Push down on the seat several times to let the bike “settle” into position before measuring. Free sag should be 15-30mm. If your free sag is less than 15mm you’ll need a heavier spring. If

it’s more than 30mm, you’ll need a lighter spring. The 100mm rider sag measurement is an average, some riders may prefer a stiffer 95mm setting or vice versa. Make sure the high and low speed compression as well as the rebound adjusters are within the specified range. You can fine-tune your suspension by adjusting these clickers. You’ll find some huge improvements can be made by a few clicks. As you become more familiar with these adjustments, you’ll find that different settings work best for a variety of tracks. I’d suggest writing down your starting settings and then keeping a record of what settings work best at each track. Factory teams spend countless hours during the week prepping their suspensions, it pays off on Sunday!

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving MRA traveled west to the Breezewood Proving Grounds. I had heard many good things about Dan Harris’ facility, but this was the first time I’d made the trip. Dan is an accomplished expert ATV racer and he and his wife own and operate the facility on a daily basis. The Proving Grounds are located just a few miles off the PA Turnpike at Breezewood, PA (the town of motels and hotels). They have just over 50 acres at their facility offering 3 mx tracks for different skill levels, a kids track and an indoor pitbike track. During the season, all tracks are groomed and watered regularly. There is another motocross track in the planning stages and they hope to complete

Boo Koo arena cross Reading, PA January 5-7, 2006 By JC Benson Several local riders made the trek to compete in the Friday and Saturday racing action. Wile, Cook, Kibler, Kendall and Pamartt competed in 250 and 450 action with Shaffer , Palonicola and several others competing in 60cc action. Friday night’s event saw a tight track layout and with all the rain and dampness the track had a hard time coming around for the evening’s
events. Racing action was hard fought for every position and saw most every rider take a spill at some point giving the fans plenty of excitement. Saturday saw a few modifications to the track and with a better track surface competition was fierce. The local contingent fought gallantly and in the 60cc action saw Shaffer on the podium Friday and Palonicola on the podium Saturday. We want to thank the members of Pagoda for volunteering their time to flag the entire weekend and do the announcing on Sunday.

Ending a successful 2006 season after running the fall circuit in Europe, Damien returned home by December to begin a new career. Damien and his family returned to his roots moving to Selinsgrove, PA from Delaware and in Mid-December saw the arrival of a new baby. As Damien moves into “semi-retirement”, he plans to compete in various weekly local events including local nationals. He will also begin his new position at VPE as a Rider Representative and Accessories Manager. However, his true passion for racing shines brightly when he begins to talk about his plans for the future in becoming a Rider Coach. His plans are to work with riders, oneon-one, to cover all facets of the sport to include diet - training -sponsorship - and riding techniques. His intentions are also to become more involved with the local tracks and their events. The ultimate goal for the future is the formation of a Motocross Academy to share his experiences and knowledge with young riders We wish Damien the best as he forges ahead to fulfill his vision and we look forward to having the opportunity of being able to watch this very personable young man in action locally in 2007. timonium short track 3oth Annual Rodney Farris Memorial Short Track Series
Every winter for 30 years that are about to become champions. There are many amateurs now, the Baltimore County Trail competing right now in our area that will give you the show of a Riders and the Cockeysville lifetime. So if you get a chance this year, go check out a flat track Optimist Club promote their race. In most cases you can do it the night before a motocross or Indoor Short Track Series in the a harescramble race and still get to your chosen destination before Cow Palace at the Timonium Cinderella turns into a pumpkin or something. Now back to Timonium, Ellicott City Motorsports sponsored the State Fairgrounds in early 4 foot trophies on opening night with Lexus of Cherry Hill putting December. I remember as a teenager some extra money into the “Dash for Cash”. The Baltimore County Opening night - 85cc racing coming to these events and Trail Riders donated $1000.00 to the Cockeysville, MD volunteer fire action. Matthew Langrehr thinking boy, “these guys are department and 170 racers made their way around the Timonium crazy”. To this day I still get that course to kick off (15) takes the win. same rush as I watch 8 riders the three race 2007 go wide open on 450cc race bikes around the tiny Timonium course. series. The Trail Riders I still see some of the same racers competing as I did back then although in most cases their children or even grandchildren have will be right back to the fairgrounds come taken to the track at Timonium. I see everything from heats full of 50cc riders to some of the summer to run their 6 fastest Pro’s in the country. On this night I would watch Jared Mees, race summer series. National # 2 in the GNC Pro Singles division win the main event. Stay tuned to MRA I would also witness National # 1, Jake Johnson win the “Dash and their website at for Cash”, both riders being from right here in Pennsylvania. In www.bctra.com for recent years I have witnessed the fastest man on the planet and all the details and 7 or 8 time National Champion Chris Carr come to Timonium and to check out all the compete. (Chris just set the land speed record out at Bonneville on cool pictures from Megan Bell flies the checkers in tonight’s event go to a motorcycle.) Womens division racing action. Is anybody seeing a pattern here? Yes I know, you’re thinking mcracingaction.com. either MRA is a flat track nut or maybe I should go check out one of these races. The case is the same with many of the flat track races that are held thruout the year in both Districts 6 and 7. On any given night you can catch up with the big boys racing right here on the home town tracks. It’s no wonder; many of them were born and raised right in our area. It’s a tribute to the amateur Youth 50cc Short Track racing is on the move. Johnson Jams at Timonium Indoor ST By Len & Ben Breech TIMONIUM, MD. DEC. 9 After failing to make the eight rider Pro class final the night before, he swept through the evenings proceedings, setting fast time, winning his heat, semi and dash for cash on his American Suzuki sponsored machine. The Baltimore County Trail Riders/ Cockeysville Optimist Club sponsored event has evolved some unique rules to help speed the program along over the years; A and B riders compete in the same class, time trials determine starting spots for 125 and larger classes and riders are only allowed to enter one class, although they can ride the Adult 50 or 100 class. While he won everything, it was far from easy as he had to get under Raun Wood late in the semi for the win. In the final, another rider who failed to make the opening final, Mike Varnes grabbed the lead from Johnson, Wood, Roy Miller and Don Mullen. Making only his third start of the season, Varnes held the lead with Johnson close behind. That changed about halfway when Johnson got a better drive off four and was alongside Varnes as they entered one, taking the lead. Corey Hormes grabbed the 450 lead from Ryan Henderson and pulled away for the win. Coming off the fourth turn to take the white flag. Henderson fell, and Brett Friedel had no where to go, hitting him and the wall. Both were slightly shaken, but not hurt. Brandon Robinson jumped into the 250 lead followed by Jake Shoemaker, Michael Poe, Dale Verzi and Derek Hersh. Poe fell hard in the fourth turn, but remounted in fifth in the confusion, only to fall a few laps later. Robinson gradually increased his margin over Shoemaker to half a lap by the end. The 125 final had John Long taking the lead from Shawn Rothstein, Joe Schueler and Jesse Long. Several times, Rothstein let Long know he was right behind him as he tapped him in the turns to try to rattle the kid. Once he bobbled slightly, letting Long have a few length margin that he held
to the end. Matt Langrehr, Dan Bromley and Joey Schmidt quickly distanced themselves from the rest of the 80 class. Langrehr and Bromley ran nose to tail while Schmidt stayed with them running the outside line between them. Schmidt took second on the fourth lap, but 125 winner (36) John Long Bromley took it back on the eighth 50 (7-8): lap and then got by Langrehr as they started 1. Cameron Smith (Con); 2. Freddie Plank knows what the term “back in the day” means. Freddie Plank from Downingtown, PA, now just a spry 86 years of age was one of the original 8 founding members of the Eastern Pennsylvania Piston Poppers back on a cold winter’s day in January of 1952. Freddie and a couple of his good friends did a lot of street riding back in the day and they wanted to form a motorcycle club where people like themselves could gather and socialize. They wanted a way to organize street rides and they wanted a place to race motorcycles. Freddie and his friends found a piece of land they could use about 1 mile west of their current location behind Harvey’s Diner right along PA Route 30. They built themselves a 1/10 mile short track with a right turn and a few left hand turns and their only requirement to join the club was that
you would compete in three events a year. Back in those days they were limited to 125cc racing machines from companies like BSA, CZ and Puch. Freddie said the CZ bike was the best because you could turn the cylinder around to get better air flow and they came with twin carbs. Freddie raced for 8 years until around 1960 before he retired to pleasure riding but he continues to be an active member with the club. He helps take care of the grounds at their current location and he loves to attend the weekly club meetings and of course he attends all the races. Freddie is the oldest active founding member and his wife Bonnie was the club secretary until her passing. The Eastern PA Piston Poppers have been at their current location in Thorndale, PA since 1962. They are easy to find right along Route 30 and they hold 4 TT Scrambles races there each year. There are a few turns with a jump and the racing is always fun to watch. They attract racers from 4 years old to 40+ and they have some of the best home cooked eats at any racing event I’ve ever attended. The Piston Poppers are always looking for active members and they would like to invite you out to enjoy a race. You can find their race schedule on the page opposite this story and for information or directions to the track, please call: (610) 269-3661. We would like to thank Freddie and all the Piston Poppers for the contributions they’ve made to the sport and Freddie I look forward to seeing you at the track for years to come.

gettin’ sideways with Cory Texter
GNC Pro # 65A Hey everyone let me introduce myself, my name is Cory Texter. I am 19 years old and I am a professional flat track motorcycle racer from Willow Street, PA. This is going to be my fifth full year racing flat track. Last year I finished 6th place in the 2006 AMA Hot Shoe Pro-Sport Series, it was a 12 race series with probably around 60-70 entries. Finishing 6th was less than what I wanted to accomplish, but I had to miss two rounds of the short series, Dayton, OH and Peoria, IL., so I’ m pretty satisfied with how the season went, considering the circumstances. My dad got me started racing when I was younger, but I only ran selective races due to my parents splitting apart and all that kind of stuff. We got my little sister Shayna on a motorcycle when she was around three years old, we both started riding at about the same age. In five short years of racing, I have learned so much from my family and great group of friends and sponsors that I have around the country and at the race track. This year 2007, will be my first year racing in the GNC Expert series. The highest level that flat track racing has to offer. I will be competing in the whole AMA Pro Singles Series and as soon as I get my points, the AMA Pro Twins Series. Jim Bull is a good friend of mine and he has asked me to write a column every month in MRA about what’s going on in the world of flat track racing. Now, I am going to warn you, I think the best grade I got in English was probably a C-, but I will try my best to educate everyone with what’s going on the best way any racer can. I want to try and give back to flat track and build the sport that I love the best I can. I can tell you this, nothing beats racing the Springfield Mile four racers wide at 140mph while pitching it into the corners sideways on XR 750s. For a flat track racer, there really isn’t an off-season. Our outdoor season starts in Florida in March and ends sometime in October. Then we have a short break until some indoors start up in December and January. Then February usually consists of long days and even longer nights getting all the bikes ready for Daytona Bike Week in March. Since our season ended I have been busy riding and training as much as I can, so when I have to throw my legs over that big ol’ XR 750 Harley for the first time in 2007, it doesn’t take me for more a ride then what I want it to. Santa brought me one of the new CRF 150R’s for Christmas and I also have a RMZ 250F that I use at our practice tracks. We have a 90 acre practice facility located in Lampeter, PA. It consists of a 1/4 mile short track, 1/10 mile short track, and a Springfield TT replica. We also have some trails to play on as well. I am trying to be as ready as possible for next year; it is going to be my
biggest challenge yet. Turning expert and racing side by side with some of my heroes that I watched when I was a little kid is something I am really excited about. In the next couple of weeks, you will find me up in Middletown, New York supporting our good friend Keith Jacobsen’s Indoors that he promotes up there. It’s a 1/10 mile indoor with about 6 second lap times. Good ol’ track with a lot of bumping and banging. A great way to start the New Year! Then we will be busting our tail trying to get the new race bikes ready come Daytona where I will sink my teeth into my first GNC expert national. Well, I could sit here all day and talk everyone’s ear off about flat track racing, but I have to save some for the nine other issues that Jim Bull is putting out this year. Everyone of you flat track guys out there who doesn’t have a subscription to Motorcycle Racing Action, make sure you get your hands on one for the 2007 season. You can’t beat it for $11 dollars a year. We need publicity and promotion for our sport and having MRA around to cover our local races is an awesome thing for our area. I want to wish everyone out there a happy and prosperous new year and I look forward to seeing every one of you at the tracks in 2007. If I have never met you, please take the time to come over to our rig and introduce yourself. I love meeting new people at the track and listening to what everyone has to say. Stay warm everybody!

2006 d6 ultimate mx banquet Reading Inn • January 13, 2006 • by MRA
Saturday night January 13th was a monumental night for District 6 and the Ultimate MX Championship Series. It was a night of firsts for this organization that has made such a huge impact on the sport of motorcycling in America. AMA District 6 makes up a great portion of the sanctioned racing events and participants in the entire country. On this night the district would retire its first ever “riding number” and it would also hold its first ever “MX Only Banquet”. I couldn’t tell you when this organization first laid its roots but it was 40 years ago when a young racer from Bristol, PA named Tony DiStefano attended his first District 6 banquet. He was 10 years old and he was there to accept an award for racing Scrambles events. Tony related that motocross hadn’t even been invented yet. On this night 40 years later, the infamous Tony D came to a D6 banquet to accept yet another award, the retirement of his district number #111. We see numbers being retired quite frequently in mainstream sports but to retire a number in a sport as young as
motocross is a pretty big deal, especially at the district level. If anyone was ever deserving of this honor though, it would be the #111 of Tony Distefano. You see Tony has quite a few firsts in his resume as well. He is the first and only member of District 6 ever to win an AMA National Motocross Championship on a motorcycle, let alone winning the title three years in a row. And he is the first man ever to bring a National Motocross Championship to Suzuki, the year was 1975. Tony has been part of the MX Des Nations team for America and he is the founder of one of the oldest motocross schools in the country. As you can see the accomplishments have been great. A string of injuries led Tony to retire from competition early but he
continues to operate his Tony D. Schools and to be an inspiration to riders everywhere. The # 111, Tony claims it was just the easiest number to put on his number plate with electrical tape, but for the rest of the world it means three Number #1 Championships in a row buy a young privateer from AMA District 6. And now, thanks to the District 6 motocross committee the number will live on forever, thank you Tony D.

Kyle pulled the winning tickets at the beginning of the evening while the crowd watched on. Those winning tickets were then placed in an envelope to be opened at the conclusion of the program. About halfway thru the door prize giveaways, George Denke stopped to pull the winning ticket for the quad, as the number was read and everyone looked around to see who the lucky winner was a hush came over the room, there was young Kyle Greenwalt holding his arm in the air with the winning ticket in hand. FastMann Racing and rear suspension components from all the major manufacturers and study the changes they have made so that we can maximize our modifications.
By: Dave Hayes Motocross racing has become very popular and extremely competitive. Stock Motocross bikes are now available that would rival the factory “Works” bikes of just a few years ago. As sophisticated as these new stock bikes have become, there are still some things that are required to make it the perfect bike for you. When you get your new bike, one of your first considerations should be to modify your suspension and engine to fit your specific abilities, weight and height, and type of racing/riding you plan to participate in. This will maximize the motorcycle’s potential, as well as your ability to perform at your highest level. Riders have many choices when it comes to modifying a race machine and racers are constantly bombarded with the latest and greatest way to fine tune their bike. In the world of off road racing, the four stroke invasion, which started a short few years ago, is nearly complete and the change has been phenomenal. Moreover, in the world of engine and suspension modifications, if you aren’t constantly changing you will not have a competitive edge. That’s where FastMann comes in. Randy Mann, the owner of Fastmann Racing, has a background in engineering and tremendous knowledge and experience in regards to suspension and engine modification. However,
all the knowledge in the world won’t make you a successful suspension and engine tuner if you don’t have the equipment, tools and skills to put that experience to work and satisfy the customers who hand you their bike and say “make it better”. Randy has the uncanny ability to modify and dial in a bike to YOUR particular riding ability and riding style. That’s a skill that should not go un-noticed by people involved in the Sport of Motocross. The majority of us do not need a “factory” bike, but we all want our bikes to perform the best they can for us! It’s that simple. I have to tell you, Randy has modified my CRF 450 and my son’s CRF 250 and we have been
so impressed with the suspension and engines modifications that I felt compelled to follow up on our story and interview from last year. I just want to let everyone know just how great his product is. I recently talked with Randy in his shop located in Mercersburg, PA to talk about his business philosophy and goals for the future and this is what he had to say: MRA: How long have you been in business? Randy: We have been offering our services since 1998. MRA: When you started what type of business was it? Randy: We started doing all types of performance, engine, suspension and carburetion work. MRA: What other types of services do you offer now? Randy: We offer Dyno work and testing, jetting on the Dyno with the exhaust gas analyzer, Dyno work and adjustments for the upcoming fuel injection, Flow Bench work for engine performance modification and Seat and Guide work utilizing a Seat and Guide Machine. The Seat and Guide Machine allows us to do multi-angle performance valve jobs and valve work within a very tight tolerance. To assure valves are sealing 100 percent, the valve jobs are vacuum tested by the onboard tester. MRA: Can you tell me a little bit about your suspension modification philosophy and has your philosophy changed as the bike technology has Engine • Suspension • Tuning with Dyno advanced? Randy: From year to year we adapt to the changes the manufactures have made to the Give Us A Call Or Check Us Out Online stock suspension components. We take apart the front

Valve failure is the single biggest complaint and repair we deal with on both 250’s and 450’s. Basically, when we do a valve job we can improve performance by 5% to 10% just by maximizing the flow of fuel and air through the engine. Unfortunately, when the bike is manufactured the seats and guides are not always concentric, which means all the parts do not line up to make a clean middle point. The cleaner the middle point the longer the parts will last. This is one of the leading causes in premature valve failure. Another New Year By Al Carr
www.reactive-suspension.com Well, just a couple of more months and a new season will be getting under way. There doesn’t seem to be any great advancement in store for this years MX models. We’ve sort of been threatened with Fuel Injection for a while now but it seems that its still only the ATV’s that are benefiting currently. Hydraulic clutches? Not yet. Only KTM has had the foresight to install one as an OEM item, if you’ve never tried one you should, they are truly a great idea. Suspension advancements? Nothing major, just some valving and spring changes is the most we can expect. I thought I’d heard that KTM had something new from WP as regards to the forks. WP is capable of creating some fabulous products as long as they don’t over engineer them as they did so many years ago

with their first USD forks. Only time will tell if there latest design has any staying power. There are some amazing advancements taking place in Suspension Technology in the automotive arena. Magneto-Rheologic is currently in use on some GM models, Corvette and Cadillac I think. This system uses sensors to detect the impact force as well as the cornering load and instantly adjust damping and spring force to achieve the perfect ride. Another I read about some time ago involved a special suspension fluid that had a variable viscosity, by simply introducing and varying an electrical current the fluid could change its viscosity in a millisecond. I believe it worked along the same lines as a LCD (liquid crystal display), introducing an electric current causes the molecules to align in such a fashion as to make them visible. I suspect some similar molecular manipulation is being utilized to create the changes in fluid viscosity. Just think instead of varying the flow orifice size as we currently do

OMS-1 rider TONY ROTH #165 Tony Roth is not the typical local rider. At 24 year old, beside been a super nice kid, he’s blessed with more natural talent than you and me together. Smoothness should be his middle name. So why he’s not on TV making a living riding with some other local pro like J. Lawrence, Helper or Mills? I don’t have a clue. But make sure you ask him that question next time you run into him … Anyway, don’t miss watching him ride if you have a chance, you won’t be disappointed….smoooooth !
Tony races Boo Koo AX Reading, PA, January 2007 Hi Tony, tell us, when did you start riding? I started riding when I was 10 years old on a XR100. I started racing two years later (12 years old) on a 1990 KX125 that we’ve found for sale in the local paper. I never raced 85’s. Why did you want to get into racing? As far I can remember, I always wanted to race. I used to watch Jeremy MCGRATH on TV all the time and just wanted to do the same thing. So, how did you do on your first race? I crashed hard and bent my handlebars after the second lap… the day was over! It was at Pagoda in the mud! Then what? I raced the C class for 2 years, and then went B for a while, I was 15. Then my 125 got stolen in my garage! So I bought a new RM250, and race 250B. 2 years later, I moved to the A class. My first A race was at Sleepy! What’s the biggest accomplishment/race you were into? I guess the mini moto at Vegas...or BOOKOO AX!! I won the Englishtown Trapani Pit Bike series in 2005 that was pretty cool. When did your dad stop going to the races? When I got my driving license... It was hard at first Buy • Sell • Trade Financing
to go without him but I got used to it after a while. What’s the part of MX you enjoy the most? I have to say....well everything! Riding, the camaraderie, the feeling you get when you drive back from a good race... If you could change something about the locals races? The cost of racing is outrageous comparing to the amount of track time we get, and I’m not a fan of the “minidad fury”. I hate when they yell at their little kid! What are your goals for 2007? Definitely get in better shape for racing and ride more often! I’m thinking of maybe following a series, but I’m not sure which one.

Do you think there will be any cars in it? No, NO CARS ALLOWED, BIKES ONLY! How is your girl friend with the racing thing? Very supportive, she drove with me in my van to Vegas for the Minimoto SX! But I felt bad because the first race she was at, I knocked myself out cold, and ended up at the hospital, but she likes it except for the danger. Peoples say you’re a really smooth rider, and fast too. Where does your style come from? I don’t know...! I don’t feel that way but everybody tells me that. Maybe from riding BMX a lot. What is your favorite D6 track? Pagoda, my hometown!
