Checkered Flag Productions’ Bad Boys of Arenacross Series Kessler Tames Trenton Arenacross The 2010 Bad Boys of Arenacross Series returned to the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, NJ, for the weekend of Jan. 8 and 9, 2010) Although temperatures outside dipped into the single digits, the racing inside was on fire. A tight track and tough competition ensured great racing for the fans in attendance. In addition to the arenacross portion of the show, this event was part of Checkered Flag Productions’ Winter Nationals Monster Truck Series.

At this event, two separate days of racing are available for competitors, who, along with the monster truck drivers, are the stars of the show. There is even a pit party for spectators to come and get autographs and take photos with all of the competitors. Classes are available for most riders, including a 50cc class, mini classes and even a quad class.

But the stars of the show are always the pro class riders.

Friday night’s pro classes were swept by KPS/MCC-backed Dakota Kessler aboard his new 2010 Yamaha. Kessler’s victories did not come easy, as Kawasaki-mounted Steve

Roman was hot on his heels in both classes.

The tight track left little room for passing, and a good start was critical for victory. But as it has been said in NASCAR, “rubbing is racing,” and the same holds true for Arenacross competition. Kessler and Roman were the only two riders in the 250 Pro class, while behind the duo in the 450 Pro class was Bryan Wallace in third and Brian Carroll in fourth.

Saturday night’s finals again saw the same two riders line up for the 250 Pro class. This time Roman got the jump on Kessler and and shut the door heading into the first turn.

Kessler was glued to the rear fender of Roman but could not make the pass, and Roman took the checkered flag ahead of Kessler.

The 450 Pro class featured more riders, and this time Mt. Holly KTMbacked Bryan Wallace got the jump and early lead coming out of the first turn. Wallace led early on, but the battle between Roman and Kessler waged on behind him, eventually pulling them past the KTM pilot. Roman went for the pass after the finish-line corner. Kessler left the inside open, and Roman ran up the inside and made the move, but Kessler was not to be outdone as he stuffed inside Roman the very next corner and re-gained the lead. Roman would stay right on Kessler’s rear fender the rest of the moto but could not make the pass. Kessler would take the victory, followed by Roman, Corey Strickler, Anthony Marisa and Wallace.

2009 ECEA Youth Awards Banquet Lancaster Host Resort, Lancaster, PA Jan. 16, 2010 - By Jim Bull Photo.com

The East Coast Enduro Association is a group of 18 dedicated clubs that offer the area’s only Enduro Series along with both a Youth and Adult Hare Scrambles Series.

This organization has deep roots in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and continues to offer excellent competition year after year.

One of their main sponsors is Tucker Rocky Distributing. They are the parent company of the MSR, Answer and Pro Taper brands. They offer a fantastic gear sponsorship program to the riders of the ECEA, and if you have questions or need information on how you can participate, please inquire with a supporting dealer or check with your club to see how to get signed up. It’s a great deal, and everyone should check it out.

The 2009 Awards Banquet was held recently at the Lancaster Host Resort in Lancaster, PA. As the norm, they spare

no expense in their yearend celebration and awards ceremonies. The day started off with an open vendor display for sponsors and businesses that help support the series. Attendees were able to see the new model race bikes available for the coming year along with all the essentials needed to compete at this level.

The Youth Awards were the first up, and 11 different classes of racers received their awards. From 4 years old to 15, the top finishers all got a spot on the podium, with class champions being awarded brand new electric guitars. Awards were given for perfect attendance in the series, for best pit parents and a Sportsman of the Year Award that went to Corby Gill. Corby received a nice award and a fourhour one-on-one session with Rich Lafferty.

Top riders in the Adult HS Series, Andrew Delong and this year’s champion Jerod Stoner, both addressed the youth racers of the series.

Their message was pretty much the same.

Work hard, appreciate your parents and have fun. Both of these guys grew up racing in the ECEA, and they battled each other this year right down to the end for the overall title. Delong had it won coming into the last round, and a mechanical failure cost him the race, allowing Stoner by for the win and the 2009 Overall.

Yoder Clinches Two Delaware Dirt Track Points Championships Harrington, DE - Nov. 29, 2009

Walls HARRINGTON, DE-Ken Yoder recorded two Delaware Dirt Track Association points titles, clinching wins Nov. 29 on the association’s 1/10-mile Harrington, DE, track. Yoder (Suz), a GNC regular, engaged in heated battles with Coatesville, PA, pilot Perry Phillips (Hon) for 450 A and Sportsman checkered flags. In addition to winning the titles, Yoder was named 2009 Track Champion. Phillips locked the Pro Class with a final win.

National #88 Raun Wood was 450 A’s early leader but was forced to settled for a fourth and a third in the Sportsman finals.

Former national numbered rider Tom Majeski finished third in the 450 A’s final,

the youth classes with wins in 50, 65 and 85 cc classes. Smith topped Georgie Price in 65 and 85 cc classes, while brother Jonathan finished second in 50cc. The Prices won, but they won the war topping all three youth divisions in the final points tally.

After a 20-year absence from Vet B, Dave Moore took the win. Dan Dougherty finished third, which earned him second overall in the championship chase. Majeski was also Vet A’s final winner over Ray Jenkins, placing him third overall for the year in that division.

Jenkins and Scott Muller were tied in overall points. Muller won the tiebreaker for the class title over Jenkins.

Welcome back to another exciting season. There are some new changes to our series programs, contingency program, and some new venues in addition to some of the same good old racing venues. Our multiple discipline racing produces some of the best racing in the Mid Atlantic region. We’re fortunate to have some of the best national caliber racing venues in our region. Budds Creek, High Point, and Steel City provide the motocrossers national caliber racing venues for the amateurs to hone their skills.

Hagerstown Speedway provides the dirt trackers with a national every year where we can watch our local riders compete against the nation’s best. Moose Mountain Ridge GNCC in Somerset, Pennsylvania, is another fortunate location where our locals can once again stack up with their peers from around the country. I’ve said many times that our region produces some of the nation’s best riders. We should all be proud of the promoters and volunteers that have built this region and its programs to what they are today.

Since our district is so small, many of our series are dual sanctioned with other districts and other series in the region. We’re very fortunate to be able to race competitively and promote together to achieve the successes that our region has achieved. All of our series cross state lines. The racers get to experience a multitude of different surfaces, conditions, preparation, southern hospitality, northern etiquette, and plain old camaraderie.

District 7 has some new board members coming on this year to help guide us into the new decade of racing in the district. John Kernan is our new vice president and moved from being the vet chairman to being motocross chairman. Ted Orr, a past District 7 Hall of Fame recipient and district champion, will be our new MX youth chairman.

Jeff Wroten, another district champion, will be our new vet MX chairman. These new chairmen will work with the newly formed North East Promoters Group to direct a new vision for the Gold Cup series in 2010.

Dirt track has a new chairman, Brett Friedel. Brett along with BCTRA, introduced the Mid Atlantic Dirt Track series last year that awarded over $6,000 in cash and merchandise to its series participants for the first time. He’ll bring this success to the district level and promote a series that produces more national riders than any other in our region. This success is achieved through the hard work of all of the promoters, motorcycle dealerships, clubs and volunteers that put their love of the sport on their shirt sleeve. Tucker/Rocky also has a full contingency program for the Dirt Track series. We’re very proud of all of their hard work and accomplishments.

Our continuing board members include Chris Borger, the hardest working chairman. Chris has also agreed to assist new Trials Chairman Bill Menges and will serve as co-chair for the Trials Series. Chris has once again set the Enduro and Dual Sport series to be one of the best in the region. He has increased his membership in all of his disciplines over the last two years while the other disciplines seem to be suffering a bit from our economic situation. His series are top-notch. Ken Doane, our hare scrambles chairman, has brought back Chad Gochenour, another District7 Sportsmanship Award recipient, and Tomahawk into his series. With the new Tucker/Rocky contingency program, Ken is planning on expanding his membership on the pace that Chris Borger has achieved. Since Randy Hawkins is MSR sponsor, our Hare Scramble riders have the capability of cashing in on our new 2010 Tucker/Rocky contingency program that covers the hare scrambles series for the first time.

As you may have noticed from the application posted to our website, we have made some changes. Most notably is the addition of a new 50 class for shaft-driven bikes only. This is good for only little PW riders and should provide for some fun riding.

Additionally, we have decided to not only pay out 100% payback for our Open A and 250 A, we also will have a purse in excess of $5,000 dollars to be split among the top riders in these two classes. Now that should provide some great competition. This is possible due to two platinum sponsors and many others that have committed to contribute to this effort, most notably, Accurate Pest Control and The Art of Strength in Waldorf, Maryland.

Besides these two organizations, we have many others that we are working with that should provide significant benefit to our members. Stay tuned for additional details.

MAMA 2009 Awards Banquet Airport Mariott, Baltimore, MD December 5, 2009

MAMA celebrated 34 years of racing on Dec. 5 with the 2009 year-end banquet held at the Airport Marriott in Baltimore, Md. Doors opened at 3 p.m., and attendees enjoyed a buffet dinner followed by a night of award presentations, door prizes and celebration. The menu consisted of Maryland crab cakes, roasted tenderloin of beef and pan fried chicken, with various sides also available. A separate children’s buffet included spaghetti, popcorn chicken, hot dogs and macaroni and cheese.

The recipient of the Howard Jones Award, given to “the rider who is always out there, trying their best, no matter where they finish” is Kameron Henderson. Chip Jowett was honored with the Margaret Stebbins Award, presented to “someone who is not on the board but goes above and beyond helping the board out on race weekends,” and Russ Irvin was honored with the distinction of being inducted into the Hall of Fame.

“This distinguished award was established to honor those who have excelled in their contributions to the growth and wellbeing of our organization.”

Austin Simmons had a lot to celebrate by taking first place in three different classes, 60A 7-11, 80A 9-11 and Junior Mini.

Simmons also won two awards for being the top “A” rider in both 60A 7-11 and 80A 9-11, known as the Steve McQueen Award.

Charlie Wernig is another rider who had a great season.

Wernig took first place in 80A 12-15, second in SuperMini, a Steve McQueen Award for being the top “A” rider and rounded out his year by winning the Larry Beck Award presented to the number one overall “A” rider. Sam Gale and Creighton Hostelka rounded out the McQueen award-winners in 80A 9-11.

Others making a mark in more than one class include Jesse Chappell, who took first in 60B 7-11, second in 60B 9-11 and won two of the top “B” riders of 2009 awards. The first in 80B 9-11 and the second in 60B 9-11 resulted in a tie with Skyler Pruitt. Pruitt came in overall second in 50B. Hunter Jackson won first in 60C 7-11, placed tenth in 80C 9-11 and took home one of three Sportsmanship awards given to those who have shown good sportsmanship on and off the track. The two other recipients of this prestigious award are Dale Lewis and Kyle Farren.

Nick Carubba won first place in 80B 9-11 and placed third in 60A 9-11. Carubba was also honored for being a top 5 “B” rider. Mikayla Hostleka won 80C 9-11 and second in Mini Women Support. John McNamara won the title of 80C 12-15 champion, placed sixth in Supermini and also won a spot in the top 5 “C” riders. Adam Benson won Open B and placed third in 250B. Amanda Brown is the 2009 Women’s champion, took third in Mini Women Open, and also received an award for having a perfect season of racing.

Annie Wernig won first place in Mini Women Open, third in 60B and was also named one of the top 5 “B” riders of 2009.

Haleigh Jowett won in Mini Women Support and placed fourth in 80C 12-15. Joshua Peery was first in Supermini and eighth in 250C, while Tyler Custer placed first in Schoolboy 14-16 and second in 250B, and TJ Irvin won Collegeboy and placed second in 250A. Cody Groves took home first place in 50B and

Awards were given for perfect attendance for the 2009 season, with 45 riders earning this distinction. Longevity awards went to Michael Groves, a member since 1993, and to Adam and Randy Benson, members since 1997.

Many of them decided to head to Delmarva Motorsports Park (DMP) in Easton, MD, on a beautiful Saturday afternoon to check out some of the changes recently made to the track.

The goal of the changes is to make the track a safer place to ride without eliminating the

This short stretch has one small tabletop before leading into a left turn heading back. This section of the track used to be flat but now contains a long rhythm section, for which riders have the option of riding out or jumping a few sections at a time.

For those of you who know the track, you will understand and appreciate the improvements, and for those who have not ridden there in a while or have never had the experience, put it on your list of places to ride in 2010.

The main track is a little over a mile in length, and the starting area has remained the same with a concrete start. As riders head into the back section of the track, there is a rhythm section

to last year, some seemed more confident since the smaller bikes had to slow down before because they were not sure how much they could take in one shot.

following the finish line jump has been lengthened, allowing for more racing action going into the turn with riders not having to get on their brakes as soon as they land. Trees in this area have been removed, improving spectator visibility and allowing the track to be lengthened. The stretch after the turn has also been lengthened and goes into a left with a straight shot to the bowl. Riders have the option of hitting the bowl high or low, but it seems quite a few of them like to go into it hard and take the high side, making some nice rooster tails on the way around.

After the bowl, there is a jump before going into another rhythm section leading back to the start point.

Track manager Buck Buckholz took the time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions.

MRA: What have you and your team done to improve the track for the safety of the riders?

Buck: “Our focus is to keep the track as safe as possible, but still provide challenge to the better riders. We have re-done some of the faces of the jumps, redesigned several of them and cut out what we thought were safety hazards, i.e. double/ doubles. We’re also adding sand to the dirt to make it a more rideable surface.”

MRA: How about competitively?

Buck: “There will continue to be changes made to the tracks to make them more competitive.

We take suggestions from the riders and try to incorporate their wishes into a track that will be good for all the riders.”

MRA: Is the starting gate staying the same?

Buck: “Yes. For the time being.”

MRA: Are there any more changes planned for the future, and when will they take place?

Buck: “Over the next few months, we’ll incorporate more changes for the track. Our goal is to have all the tracks finished by the spring, including the new quad track we are designing at this time.”

MRA: In the past this track has been very venerable to weather conditions. I noticed some drainage ditches in between the track area; what other improvements have you made to deal with nature?

“Local Boy Jason Issenock Takes Home the Checkers” Every year, the season goes out with a bang at the Timonium Cow Palace. The Baltimore County Trail Riders Association has been putting on the Timonium Indoor Series for decades. Hundreds of riders and spectators pack into the fairground building to experience the bar banging action that has been present since the 1970s. With an eight-rider main event and lap times that get below seven seconds, it may be one of the toughest shows to make.

Luck plays a large part in either helping you to the main or ending your night.

For 2009, assumptions were made on who would take the title as this year’s “man to beat” at the indoors. Donnie Mullen, who controlled most of the local outdoor races and won by half a lap in here last year, is still on the injured list and awaiting his return.

Without his presence, we were unsure of the final outcome that would arise at the end of the first night. Several riders have the ability and speed needed to win, but it takes more than that to get it done at the Cow Palace.

Jake Johnson, past Singles Grand National Champion, was thrown into the mix. Johnson took home a few wins the last time running at the indoors and was a fast contender. Another rider welcomed this year is the 2009 Grand National “Rookie of the Year,” Matt Weidman on the #20 machine.

On Friday night, Jake Johnson set the fastest lap for the Pro class, followed by the #24 of Mike Varnes. Varnes is a veteran who has been consistent at the indoors for many years and can never be counted out. Jason Issenock, mounted on the #34 Suzuki, pulled

the holeshot over Johnson in the first heat.

Johnson ended up going down. Issenock pulled away to take the pole in his semi.

Issenock went on to win his semi and take the pole for the main. Raun Wood #88 also took a win in his semi to take the second spot on the line for the main event. Mike Varnes went down in his semi to ruin his chance in the main.

Also seated on the front row was the #32a of Austin Greenland and #99s of Mike Poe. The back row consisted of the #20 of Weidman, the #86a of Paul Lynch, the #14 of Johnson, and the #92s of RJ Hart. Jason Issencock was the local favorite, as he resides only seconds away from the fairgrounds here in Timonium.

Issenock got the jump for the third time in a row, grabbing the lead from the pack.

Going into turn one, Greenland and Wood went down, leaving the inside open. Issenock pulled ahead to a comfortable lead, with Poe Rob Smith (#69), nicknamed “Scarecrow,” takes the win in the first and Lynch four ever Vintage class down at the indoors.

his heals. Smith settled in behind Reichert, waiting for a chance to get in the mix. Reichert tried to go wide around Hawk in turn two, and Smith took the inside to take over second.

Reichert regained the spot from Smith, and with one lap to go he tried to get under Hawk for the lead. His maneuver got him tangled up coming out of four, and he went down. Cook wound up getting tangled with Alex Thomas, and they wound up in the hay bales, taking them out of the top five. Hawk went on to take the win, followed by Smith, Reichert (who recovered), and then Tucker Hate to round out the top four.

The 50cc 4-8 year old shaft class was up next. Timmie Colonell got out in front and checked out for the third time of the night. He ended up taking home the checkers, followed

by Nicholas Crone, Tyree Moore, Robert Wheatley, Payton Hake, Burke Marsiglia, Elizabeth Smolen, and Hannah Wheeler.

Michael Cortese pulled the holeshot in the adult 50 class, followed by “Rookie of the Year” Matt Weidman. Weidman made every attempt at a pass until going down coming out of turn two. Cortese went on to take the win, followed by Jerry Alexander, Jonathan Jordan, Pete Neal, Weidman, Louis Smith, Jason Cunningham, and Earl Luhn.

Colin Cunningham slipped at the line in the 65cc main event to give Dalton Gauthier the holeshot. Savion Terry took over the second spot followed by Nathan Reichert, Chase Smith, Chris Thomas, Jesse Snyder, and Devin Owens. On lap number two, Chris Thomas made a move on Smith to take over the fifth spot. On the next lap, Cunningham took the second position from the #91 of Terry. Gauthier pulled away to get the win followed by Cunningham, Terry, Reichert, Thomas, Smith, Snyder, and Owens. Gauthier repeated the holeshot in the 85cc class over Joey Schmidt. With three laps down, Schmidt made the pass on Gauthier to take over the lead. Ryan Dragunas went down in turn two.

Schmidt went on to take the win, followed by Gauthier, Colton Smith, Brandon Price, and Cameron Smith to round out the top five.

Kristina Mester got the jump in the Women’s class. Amanda Hardy clipped Mester going into turn one when she sat up and high sided.

Samantha Resch reeled in Mester and made a pass for the lead coming out of turn four.

Resch went on to take the win followed by Mester, Hardy, and Amanda White.

Cody Bauer pulled the holeshot in the Youth 100 class. Colton Smith went down in turn one and was out of the race. Ryan Dragunas took over the lead followed by Bauer and Cameron Smith in third. Smith made the move past

Before the main events began, five riders were chosen to battle it out in the “Dash for Cash.” These riders earn their way into this single race by setting the fastest lap times in their classes. Two riders are chosen from the Pro class, one rider from the 450, one rider from the 250, and then the last rider is from the 125 class. As stated before, Jake Johnson and Mike Varnes were the two fastest pros.

Dillon Cava set the fastest time in the 450’s, my little brother Nicholas Henderson was fastest on the 250, and Joey Alexander set the fastest time in the 125 class on a xr100.

Out of the five riders, all were on Hondas, but the #24 Yamaha of Varnes. Before the light went green, Varnes jumped the start and was sent to the penalty row. Johnson pulled the holeshot with Cava right on his tail. For several laps, Cava was in striking distance, but Johnson never made a mistake. With two laps left, Johnson began to put some distance between them and pulled ahead for the win.

The first final of the night began with the little guys in the 50cc Chain Driven class for the 7-8-year-olds. Ramzee Hawk was the pole sitter on the #15 KTM, followed by the #14 of Chase Smith, the #16 of Nathan Reichert, and #78 of little Dougie Cook, all on the front row. Timonium brings riders out of the woodwork. Some riders come from road racing, others motocross, some super motard, and of course dirt track. Benny McFadden (#21) returns to dirt track after running B class in motocross. Here he figures he can intimidate me by attempting to jump into my lap.

Joey Alexander got the jump in the Open B class and checked out from Daniel Bromley and the pack. While going through lapped traffic, Alexander tangled with a lapper and went down. The crash left Matthew Schwartz’s leg trapped inside the rear end of Alexander’s bike and caused a red flag. Due to the number of laps completed, Bromley was given the win, followed by Jeff McManus, Jake Cranston, Alexander, and Ronnie Mercer to round out the top five.

The Adult 100 class started off with a pileup in turns one and two between national #25 Brian Phillips, the #21 of Chris Hathaway, and the #88 of Mike Standiford. Jake Shoemaker pulled the holeshot over Joe Dragunas.

Dragunas plowed Shoemaker to take the lead, and Shoemaker took the position right back. Samantha Bergman passed Albert Cook with a lap to go to take over the fourth spot. Shoemaker ended up taking home the win, followed by Dragunas, Matt Weidman, Bergman, Cook, Standiford, and Hathaway.

My dad, John Henderson, pulled the holeshot in the 125 class over Joe Bromley, Joe Dragunas, and Joey Alexander. Three laps into the race, Henderson bobbed coming out of turn four, and Bromley took over the lead. Colton Smith and Alexander took the inside line to follow Bromley past Henderson.

Albert Cook passed Dragunas toward the end of the race to take over the fifth spot. Bromley took home the lead, followed by Smith, Alexander, Henderson, and Cook to round out the top five.

The 250 start went to another Henderson, my little brother Nicholas. Roy Miller went down in turn one. Travis Diem was hot on Henderson’s heels, waiting for a pass. Every lap he would square the turn up but couldn’t get the bite he needed to drive past. Coming out of the last turn, Henderson left some room, and Diem got a drive coming out of four.

Henderson clipped the wall as Diem took the win. Chris Klinefelter snuck his front end under the left side of Henderson’s bike and missed second place by a wheel. Diem took the win, followed by Henderson, Klinefelter, Richard Mellinger, and Perry Phillips rounding out the top five.

Perry Phillips got a little too excited and jumped the light in the 450 class. Roy Miller got the holeshot on the restart and led Dillon Cava and Chris Klinefelter. Miller went down and dropped to the back. Klinefelter ended

up getting out front to take the win, followed

by Cava, Corey Hormes, Phillips, and Dalton Winkler finishing in the top five.

This year is the first time running the new Vintage class down at Timonium. We had several bikes ranging from the 1970s to the 1989 date set in order to be eligible as a vintage bike. Anthony Crabbe grabbed the holeshot over Rob Smith. Crabbe went a little wide coming out of turn two, and Smith’s Bultaco pulled past to take the lead. Smith ended up checking out. Matt Langrehr, Ray Jenkins, and Chris Hathaway all worked their way around Crabbe. Smith took home the lead, followed by Langrehr, Jenkins, Hathaway, Crabbe, Steve Bromley, and then Johnny Long on the Bill Brown-sponsored Hodaka.

The 50cc 7-8 class had quiet little Nathan Reichert #16 on the pole, followed by smiley little #14 Chase Smith, Friday night’s winner #15 Ramzee Hawk, and the #17 of Karl Wheeler. For the second night in a row, Hawk got the jump and leaped out in front. Reichert was hot on Hawk’s heels, with Smith followed

by Wheeler, the #76 of Alex Thomas, and the #3 of Gast. Reichert worked on Hawk but couldn’t find an opening so he tried to go wide. Coming out of turn two, Smith made a drive under Reichert to take over the second

We’re back down at Timonium Fairgrounds for another wild night of racing. The morning began with an open practice round for anyone that wanted to pay a cheap fee to cut laps and dial in their bikes. Things ran pretty smoothly, and riders got plenty of seat time.

After practice, the gates opened, and we had some time to rest and prepare for the long and chilly night ahead of us. The regular practice session began shortly and ran until it was time for the riders’ meeting. From there, we went through time trials and the races began. All riders ran in the heats, then classes with heavy numbers ran in the semis. Before we knew it, it was the “Dash for Cash,” and we were heading into the main events.

Setting the fastest time of the night, the #88 of Raun Wood took pole in both the “Dash for Cash” and the opening heat race for the Pro class. Followed by Wood was last night’s “man to beat,” the #34 of local boy Jason Issenock. Third on the line was one of the boys from Dalton Gauthier (#14g) won both classes that he ran down the PA posse, the #18 of “Ace” Phillips. at the indoors. Here he carried the checkers after beating Next to Phillips was the #14 of Joey Joey Schmidt in the 85 class.

Alexander, who set the fastest time on the 250. Finishing out the lineup on a 125 and the #33 of Michael Thomas, the #14 of Chase Smith, and fifth was the triple-crown winner in District 7, Cortese.

Colton Smith got the holeshot with Dragunas hot on his heels. Schmidt got pushed out in the first turn and got freight trained in turn one. Going into turn three, Cameron Smith went down and had trouble getting his bike started. Jeff Standiford #56 held the third spot until Ryan Varnes #68 made a pass coming out of turn four. Cody Bauer #64 got a wheel under Standiford, but couldn’t make a move to take the fourth spot.

On the last lap, Dragunas closed the gap on Smith and set him up for a pass but didn’t have the time to make it happen. Smith went on to take the win, followed by Dragunas, Varnes, Standiford, Bauer, Cameron Smith, and Schmidt.

The Open B class looked like a demolition derby. Coming out of turn two, leader Jason Cunningham went down, collecting Michael Cortese and a handful of other riders. Matt Langrehr was the first rider to make it out of the mess and take over the lead. Bennie McFadden also made it through, followed

by Shane Sanft, Jeff McManus, and Eric Hackman. Sanft ended up going down off the back of McFadden to take him out of the running. Langrehr pulled away to his first ever Open B win, followed by McFadden, Hackman, Cunningham, Cortese, Jacob

The first award is a distinctive honor given to an individual who has set exceptional records and/ or has made significant contributions to the sport of motorcycling for District 7.

The Hall of Fame was created in 1979 by Billy Heygster, who gave this “President’s Award” to five honorable members. This year’s award is being given to its youngest honoree, Alexander Frye. As a young rider, Frye has already brought home two victories from Loretta Lynn’s Amateur Nationals. He took his first victory at Loretta’s in 2007 in the 65 7-9 stock class. His second victory came this year A Class - 1-Scott Merrick, 2-Brian Carpenter, 3-Ray in the 85 9-11 modified class.

2010 AMA Arenacross Series Baltimore Pro Arenacross

This weekend, the 2010 AMA Arenacross series made a stop in Baltimore, MD, for its second round of racing. Wes Kain was in the building as the announcer, adding tons of humor and garnering tons of laughs with his off-color antics. The track remained mostly the same as years prior; however, on Friday night there was a break in the whoops, and on Saturday they replaced the gap by adding more. The catapult still remained the crowdpleasing, sensationally huge vertical finish-line jump.

The weekend schedule started out with the Pros going head to head Friday and Saturday night and Amateurs racing Sunday. During the Pro nights, the event segued into giving the crowd a taste of the next generation of future motocross stars with the 65cc 7-11 and 85cc 9-15 Amateur classes racing. #79 Timmy Crosby won the 65cc event aboard a KTM, while local rider #63 Colton Yentzer got 7th.

The singing of the National Anthem and the introduction of several of the seasoned professionals ended the opening ceremonies, and the racing was on. On Saturday, the heat races were fast but plagued with wrecks. On the first turn for the Arenacross class, there was a huge pile-up with Demuth, Browning and Bright going down, causing

several of the seasoned riders to go the LCQ. Once the heats finished, the main events were on a lengthy 25-lap battle for the Arenacross class. But it was points leader #911 Tyler Bowers who took both nights for the Arenacross main events for a 16-point lead over teammate Chad Johnson. Teammates #709 Tyler Bright NC and #12 Jim Neese were able to wrap up the podium both nights in the Arenacross Lites. Neese won the first night, and Tyler won second. Local rider #444 Chad Wages made a 7th-place finish both nights in the Lites class, putting him in 4th place for the overall points chase.

The night capped off the last interview for the Arenacross main event, but the momentum doesn’t stop there. The racing continues on in Hampton, VA, with many riders thirsty to make the podium and change up the leader board.

2010 AMA Arenacross Series Baltimore Amateur Arenacross

Baltimore, MD - January 15-17, 2010

By Ashley Boyan - www.ashleyboyan.com The economy didn’t seem to hamper amateur racing in Baltimore as much as expected, as the 1st Mariner Arena, voted the number one event arena in the country, filled up once again on Sunday with racers and spectators alike. Luckily, everything except staging was inside, as the weather was much

cooler and rain moved in. The worst parts of the spectators’ day were the fumes from the 2-stroke smoke cloud, which filled the arena.

Racing began at 1:15 p.m. and set off with the Expert main. #471 Ben Rio cleaned up a 1st-place, while District 7 riders #85 Dave Azadi and #401 Adam Layman secured a 4th- and 5th-place finish. A real treat to watch aboard a Kawasaki was #37 Austin Coon of Spencer, WV. Coon was on fire every moto and cleaned up in the Intermediate Arenacross and Lites mains and had fun flattening it out over the finish line.

The women’s class was one of the biggest, with 14 competitors, and got a huge cheer as #293 Amanda Brown made it around the track for a win. Brown dominated the class, cleared the catapult and lapped half of the field. Her close competitor, #605 Kendall Chase, did exactly what her name said and chased Brown down for a 2nd-place in Women’s and 1st-place in the Girls 9-13.

PA was in the house in the 65cc main when #333 Cameron Scheller, #81 Bobby Semelsberger and #4t Tucker Hake went 1st, 2nd, 3rd. On his new Cobra, #3 Daniel

Stephens took a 4th in the 50cc 4-6. 85cc 7-11 Timmy Crosby was able to continue his success from Friday and Saturday and took a 2nd place.

For the Senior class, the favorite pick and usual suspect #914 Michael Bear had a surprising wreck in the whoops and was unable to regain composure for an 8th-place finish, which made way for #28x Kurt Mcmillen to secure the win.

Supermoto rider #18 Jason Conlon won the over 30 class, while #93 Michael Boyce secured a 4th-place finish in the over 25 class.

All hopes of a heel-clicker finish were shattered when #571 Jim “Jimbo” Mandrin had a hard fall in the rhythm section, which left him down for several minutes. He was eventually able to walk off the track.

The day wrapped up with the final pit bike class. PA’s own #411 Tyson Clark, who won his heat race, finished the day with a win,

the holeshot and ample style as he launched his mini over the entire catapult. #81 Joshua Sheffer was close behind with a 4th-place finish. Everyone cleared out and headed out
