Hello Race Fans Happy New Year everybody, I hope both the holidays and the off-season were great for everyone. I’d like to welcome you all to a new year of racing and introduce you to our new format to help celebrate our 15th Anniversary of bringing you the best local amateur race coverage around. 2011 promises to be an exciting year. We see the economy starting to turn around, and that means more racing opportunities for everyone. For 2011 we will be the official publication of the MDRA 6 and 7 of the Mid Atlantic Motocross Association (MAMA) and of AMA District 7. In addition, we will feature off road racing from the ECEA, the PA State Harescramble Series and the NEOC. If that’s not enough, we will include rider interviews, tech and fitness tips, event schedules and just about “everything racing” this region has to offer. For our 15th Anniversary, we will bring you the same great racing coverage you’ve become accustomed to, plus we are rolling out a new look going to a new full-color format. We will be focusing a lot on youth racing, as it is the future of our sport, and our goal is to promote the racers, the advertisers and the sponsors of our favorite pastime. I like to look at it as making heroes of our riders, increasing the business of our advertisers, thus allowing greater sponsorship for all our series. Please remember that the folks you see advertising in our pages are the ones that support the sport that you love to compete in, so please pay it back when you can.
Also remember that you can find MRA online as well as in print. Over the off-season we have ramped up our web offerings. Just a few of the things you’ll find there are daily updates to our area, plus you can log on each week and link to your favorite photographer’s website. This means no matter where you race that Sunday, you should be able to find that track photographer’s photos on Monday, or shortly thereafter. We will have more rider interviews, plus Free Classified advertising in our Swap Shop feature. Just log on, click on the logo and post for free to expose your unneeded bikes or goods to thousands of viewers. We also have links to all your favorite websites, plus you can follow us on Facebook, where you’ll find mini video clips, MRA promotions and more daily updates. Our first event of the season will be the Motorama Races and Shows in mid-February at the Harrisburg Farm Show Arena. I know we’re excited to get back to the racing, and I’m sure you are too. After that, the outdoor season gets going in early March, and from then until the end it’s pure pandemonium. You can check our event schedules here in our pages, and we hope to see you at an upcoming event soon. The choices are great, so pick a series, strap on your gear and we’ll see you at the track.
See you at the track

Story By: MRA Photos: Rob Harris & C. Wright This month we caught up with Women’s and Amateur class racer Amanda Brown. Amanda has been racing since she was a little girl. Her dad, Dale, got her started way back in the day at the infamous Budds Creek MX Park racing in the 50cc division. What a way to get started, racing at one of the best-known motocross tracks in the world. If you can pull that off, the rest is a piece of cake. Well, that training ground seems to have served Amanda and her dad well. Today you can see her tearing up the tracks racing in the MAMA and District 7 motocross series. In addition, Amanda represents well by traveling to the bigger races like the Mini O’s and qualifying for the Loretta Lynn’s Amateur Nationals. She not only is a great competitor, but this year has also stepped up as the Women’s Motocross representative for District 7. She hopes to put a few big “Women’s Class” races on this year around the area too, so watch our pages for those details. For 2011, she is again chasing a National Championship at Loretta Lynn’s and plans to race her first Pro race at the end of the year. I’d say keep your eye on this young lady in the coming seasons; she’s determined and has talent, what more do you need?

BP Promotions PA State Harescramble Banquet Dec. 11, 2010 Grantville, PA - By: MRA
The elder statesmen of the series display their awards.
These four riders had perfect report cards in 2010.
The Shughart Family earns Sportsman of the Year.
Early December found us celebrating the champions of the PA State Harescramble Series. The series has grown year after year and is always well-run and well-attended and offers some of the best racing of the year. In 2010 we found ourselves celebrating its 10th anniversary. The evening started with a social hour followed by a great buffet-style meal served at the Holiday Inn in Grantville, PA. Joe Bromley, director of racing for the AMA and series promoter, was once again the evening’s emcee. Bromley started off with a recap of the 2010 season and thanked past series sponsor Thor and Moose Racing for all their support over the last couple of seasons. Awards and giveaways for this year’s banquet alone totaled over $20,000. New for 2011, AXO America will be the main series sponsor along with a host of local dealers and businesses. Racers can earn gear sponsorships among a host of other prizes and awards. In addition, KTM Sport Motorcycles always supports this series, and two well-deserving riders earned new KTM rides for 2011, boosting the prizes to over $35,000. The series not only offers awards for class championships, but also for Riders of the Year in several categories plus Sportsmanship awards, perfect report cards, Iron men and others. For 2011, the series will offer 13 rounds beginning in late March and running through October. They use electronic scoring and offer classes for both motorcycles and ATVs in youth and adult divisions. Over the years, many of the series riders have gone on to win National Championships, and many of the series’ current racers are contenders on the national level. If you want to race a great local offroad series that pays back to its riders and prepares you for the next level, then you owe it to yourself to check out the PA State Harescramble Series. Find them on the web at www.pahsracing.com and check out images of all tonight’s champions at www. mcracingaction.com.

200 B champ Dieter Willenbrock earns himself a KTM Sport Motorcycles ride for 2011.
Open A Champion Timmy Hunter earns a KTM ride and an AXO gear sponsorship for 2011.
Name: Timmy Hunter Hometown: Norwood, PA Age: 20 Racing: 12 years Class: 201 – Open A We’ve watched Timmy Hunter race for the last six or so years, and if anyone is deserving of this ride it is him. Timmy first approached me on a very muddy day at the Flying Dutchmen, and I believe at that point he had just moved up to the big bikes. He told me to watch for the # 45 KTM and asked me to take some pictures. He also said to make sure I got the right # 45 because at the time not only was he riding the # 45, but his dad and older brother were too. He said don’t worry, I’ll be the one out in front, and I’ll be wearing a tie. Well sure enough, we found Timmy through the mud that day, suit tie and all, and we’ve been watching him ever since. He also told me early on that he was going to be a champion, and every
time I see Timmy with that big smile of his he tells me all about his riding and how he has his sights set on all the local championships, as well about how he shares equipment with his family and how everyone in the family rides the wheels off those bikes. They definitely get their money’s worth out of their rides, but, hey, you have to these days. I ran into Timmy a few races ago, and he mentioned again how he could have won a few more races this year with the absence of some mechanical issues; however, never complaining, just always explaining. Well guess what – 2011 could be the year of the Hunter. Timmy has always seemed to pull a championship or two each year no matter the circumstances. I know he would like to wrap up all of the local series some year, and this could be it. With an Open A championship under his belt and a brand new ride there should be no limits. I know KTM couldn’t have picked a better rider to award a bike to. Timmy Hunter, always humble, always promoting and very fast indeed. Look out racers, I do believe you’ll have your hands full again in 2011.

Local Off Road Racers Score Big On The National Scene By: Jim Bull - MRA Editor MRA has watched this group grow up racing at the local level. They’ve all done well over the years competing in our local series, and a few of them have been Hotshots in our pages in years past. Please check out their story here as they blast onto the national scene and show America what they’ve learned racing here, then log on to their website for more information on the team and how to become a sponsor. Keystone Offroad Racing Team is the newest addition to the offroad motorcycling community consisting of four riders: Jedediah Haines, LeeAnn Bange, Ian Pannebakker, and Zack Smith. Despite recently being formed, these riders have a total of 50 years combined experience in the dirt bike industry. The team will be at all of the 2011 GNCC races and some of the AMA Nationals, PA. State, District 6, and ECEA Hare Scramble events. Keystone Offroad Racing’s members are based out of southcentral Pennsylvania, where they train and practice together every week. They compete in different classes that consist of top Amateur divisions in both Men’s and Women’s, as well as both of the Pro Classes. Keystone Offroad Racing’s main series of competition is America’s premiere offroad racing circuit: the Grand National Cross-Country (GNCC) series. For eight months of the year on a bi-weekend basis, the team will travel up and down the Eastern half of America racing dirt bikes in national caliber events as well as select local races. Our Goal Keystone Offroad Racing Team was formed with one goal in mind, to be successful. Our team of riders will reach this goal through hard work and dedication, two necessary qualities. Through our hard work we want to attract only the best sponsors, of which will be represented on a national racing level. Keystone Offroad Racing Team wants to promote its supporters in the best possible manner. This will be accomplished with good results and the respect this group of riders has earned in the motorcycling community. The final element which will make Keystone Offroad Racing Team successful is having fun and sharing our passion for the sport.

I had just arrived at Sleepy Hollow for their annual Labor Day race this past September. I was cruising the pits as I usually do before the racing starts, and I came across their pit setup for the first time – Headcase MX. My first thought was, who was the Headcase that came up with that and what’s the deal here? Well, it didn’t take long for me to start snooping around, and here is what I learned. The first guy I recognized was big Jim Munch from over at the Pagoda Motorcycle Club. He explained to me that a group of local racers had just formed this race team for the purpose of not only riding together under the same tent but to get their heads together and set some goals and support each other while doing it. I thought to myself, pretty cool concept, but will it last? I’ve seen a lot of local teams come and go over the years, and this was even taking it one step further, goals other than winning races. As we wore on through the rest of the season, there they were at all the big races, flying their banners and working together. I’d pop into their pit every now and then, and I got to spend some time talking with Kevin Kolb, the founder of Headcase, and guys like Casey Clark and Zak Klaptosky, all Headcases in their own rite, and I thought, these guys just might be on to something. Fast forward to the off-season, and we’re at Montgomeryville Cycle Center doing a cover shoot for none other than – Headcase MX. By working together and setting some of the right goals, this race team has accomplished many great things in a short period of time. Several of the members have been awarded Team Green rides for the upcoming season as they strive towards a Loretta Lynn’s Amateur National Championship. Other local sponsors have come together to support the team, and at this printing there are currently around 20 or so members of the team working together to reach their goals. The team started when Kevin Kolb and Casey Clark came together working through recovery, and they thought, “wouldn’t it be great if we could help others who really loved to race motorcycles but for one reason or another had something holding them back?” So they started looking for team members who wanted to really make an effort to get their heads right, thus allowing them the ability to go faster on their motorcycles. So far, so good; everyone I’ve talked to on the team says that being on the team, attending the team meetings and working toward their goals has made a difference in their performance both on and off the track. In further talking with team leader Kevin Kolb, that is the main goal for Headcase MX. They are actively looking for team members who are willing to set goals and work hard to meet them both in racing and in life. Yes, Loretta’s is the goal for many, but their belief is by working toward getting everything else right in your life, the racing will become easier. Many of the greats will tell you, it’s 95% mental. Get the head right, and the rest will come easy. Well, here’s a local team that’s going to test the concept. Keep an eye on this group as they work their way through the season. You’ll see them at the local events and at the Nationals; and they’ll be racing at all skill levels. We wish the best to all the team members both on and off the bike, and please check them out on Facebook, as team slots are available.

www.motoramaevents.com In the summer of 1977, Armin Hostetter and his three sons were finishing up their fifth racing season at Trail-Way Speedway in Hanover, PA. Being a farmer all his life and a motorcycle racer in his youth, he had an idea. During the yearly visits to the Pennsylvania Farm Show, he knew the large arena had a dirt floor. That coupled with the fact that no one was racing outdoors over the winter, the solution was obvious, indoor racing. With a few phone calls he put together the first Motorama event on February 15th - 16th, 1978. They called it the Harrisburg Indoor Motorcycle Championships. Over the last 30 years, there were many growing pains, but the main focus has always been the racing. Buildings were added to the complex, expanding to almost 30 acres under one roof. The Motorama Races and Shows have expanded to include all of the buildings. The newest is the new expo hall, home to the Saturday only show called Tunerwar and the Sunday only commercial truck and offroad expo. All of the racing and all shows are included in your single admission price, but there are no reserved seats in any of the five racing arenas. There are over 2,000 racers along with over 700 race and show vehicles on display. As you walk through the shows and pit areas, feel free to stop and talk to them. Don’t forget to support the more than 100 various sponsors and vendors who continue to support Motorama year after year. Motorama is the ultimate motorsports extravaganza and custom car show in the nation. It all goes down February 19th and 20th, 2011, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, at the Farm Show Complex. There are many things to see and do here, but ultimately Motorama is all about the racing. With all 7,000 arena seats occupied all weekend long, the Arenacross racing is what
makes Motorama Events a national phenomenon. That’s right, the indoor arena cross competitions attract racers from all over the nation. Riders from the ages of 4 to 40 all come out to compete for top honors in their respective class. Professionals such as Travis Pastrana, John Natalie and many others have graced the arena cross tracks at Motorama in addition to the local amateur stars of tomorrow. Be sure to wear warm clothing and a comfortable pair of shoes, as there is a lot to see and do. A good set of earplugs is always advisable, as it gets fairly loud during the arenacross races, and be sure to come early for a good seat. Also, bring along some extra cash to take advantage of the great deals at the show and to help out with the Motorama charity. This year Motorama Events has chosen a local group that helps racers out with protective headgear, Foundation 529. After many years supporting the Spina Bifida Association, the decision was made to help benefit a group that helps the local racers. Well that’s about it. Check out their ad here in our pages, then plan your weekend accordingly, and we’ll see you at the show.
Local expert racer Jeremy Cook is always a force to be reckoned with at the Motorama races.
Motorama events will be raising money for Foundation 529 at this year’s show.

My Return to the Track A Day to Remember By Ryan Henderson

Middle Atlantic Motocross Association 35th Annual Awards Banquet Dec. 4, 2010 • By MRA It would be my first trip to a MAMA awards banquet, but I can imagine it certainly won’t be my last. This year’s event was held at the Marriott at BWI and was attended by just under 500 racers and parents. The night started early with a great buffet meal that included the always popular Maryland style crab cakes, a roasted beef tenderloin and pan fried chicken. The kids got their choice of spaghetti with meat sauce, everybody’s favorite popcorn chicken and yummy macaroni and cheese. I say there’s no better way to start an awards banquet than to enjoy a great meal with friendly folks. And that’s exactly what I found at this first-time banquet for me. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, and the night rolled on without a hitch. Of course it should, this was the 35th time for this organization that caters to youth motocross racing in the mid-Atlantic region of our great country. What an accomplishment in this day and age, to operate a racing program for that
long in this economy, and by looking around it didn’t look like anyone was going anywhere. After the meal we got right into the awards, with Dale Brown doing a great job as the evening’s emcee. In addition, MXPTV was on hand to record the night’s event to video, and the always faithful to MAMA photographer Jimmy Hyatt from Pop Pop’s Images was there as well. This group amazed me with the number of extra awards they presented for service and outstanding accomplishments. The trophies were phenomenal, and we got to meet George from Larry Beck Trophies, who has been working with the group since the beginning. In addition to the trophies, MAMA paid out $5,000 in yearend cash to their two premiere expert divisions. Although primarily a youth racing organization, they’ve decided to step up and take care of the expert riders too. After all they’ve been at it for 35 years now, it’s amazing how those kids keep

Oh, and by the way, they do invite expert racers from all over to participate. If you think you have what it takes, they invite you to come and chase the cash. The night rolled on, and awards were presented to all classes. Don Logan, longtime board member, turned the top spot over to Ken Laurie, who will be the new president in 2011. The new schedule was released, introducing a few new tracks for the new year and a new gear sponsorship program from Fly Racing. Series sponsors were thanked, and a good time was had by all. The night ended with dancing, socializing and some good, oldfashioned bench racing. 2011 promises to be an exciting year for the MAMA organization. Whether you’re a longtime participant of the series or a racer looking for a great series to attend, I recommend you check this group out. “Isennock Monopolizes the Concrete”
When the temperatures drop and we see our first flurry, we know what is right around the corner, the Indoor races at Timonium Fairgrounds here in Maryland. Each December, the Baltimore County Trail Riders Association hosst a bar bangin’ event held on a tiny indoor concrete oval. Lap times are down below seven seconds, making it action packed. They run through time trials, heats, and semis to narrow down the field to the eight-rider final. This year turned out to be interesting and full of excitement with a stunt show and other exhibitions. It was also a milestone for me personally, and I will get into that a little later. “Mr. Shorttrack” DonDon Mullen, national #71, proved once again that his speed could not be touched in time trials. He was clocked quickest even while barreling down the track on his back past the finish line. This set him up for the first spot in the “Dash for Cash” and the prime spot on the line for the Pro heat. Second fastest of the night was the local Jason Isennock. Joey Alexander was the fastest qualifier in the 250 class, putting him third on the line. Mullen’s brother, Perry “Ace” Phillips, showed that speed runs deep in the family blood, taking the fastest spot in the 450 class. Albert Cook filled up the last spot in the dash, being the fastest qualifier in the 125 on a DRZ125. Mullen jumped out in front when the light went green. Phillips was able to tag his little brother for a few laps but couldn’t keep pressing, with Mullen going on to take the win. The first final of the night consisted of both the 50cc Shaft 4-8 class and the 50cc Stock 7-8 class. Devon Stanley grabbed the holeshot followed by Alex Thomas, Trever Williams, Jake Gast, Tim Colonell, and Jordan Bennet. Thomas quickly took over the lead and had his hands full with Williams. Eventually, Thomas broke free and ran away with the win. Williams was able to clinch the second spot followed by Gast, Stanley, and Bennet. Colonell came home with the victory in the Shaft class and was able to come across the line at a respectable spot within the Stock class. Jerry Alexander jumped out to an early lead in the Adult 50 class followed by Michael Cortese and Ian Lau. It turned into a very eventful race where luck played a big role. Lau plowed through to gain the second spot before going down and dropping to the back of the field. Alexander had the same issue, giving Cortese, Jason Cunningham, and Jacob Jenkins the top spots. Cortese battled for a while until a flat tire slowed him down. He was persistent and rode through it. Cunningham and Jenkins battled at the front, and Jenkins was able to take home the win. Cunningham finished second followed by Austin Greenland, Cortese and Louis Smith. It was no surprise that the #1n of Brandon Price led the charge into turn one in the 65cc class. The national champion has fought hard to earn his title and proved that he is unstoppable on his 65. Alex Thomas was able to follow Price into the turn on his bigger bike. Chris Thomas trailed in third followed by Melanie Siegel and Trever Williams. Chris Thomas made a move on Alex Thomas coming out of turn four to take over the second spot. Williams also did some work to advance, picking up the fourth spot from Siegel with Jake Gast, Dillion Curry, and Karl Wheeler battling towards the back. Price was able to check out followed by C. Thomas, A. Thomas, Williams, and Siegel. Price returned to the track on his 85 to battle with rivals Cameron Smith and Colin Cunningham. Smith was able to grab the holeshot followed by Cunningham and Price. Petey
Rob Smith (#69) makes a move on Chris Hathaway (#84) in the Vintage class, taking home the win. Colonell held the fourth spot just in front of Kalynn Mcafee. Smith, Cunningham, and Price were single file for the remainder of the race, charging on until the finish. Smith was able to hold the lead, Cunningham took a close second, Price third, Colonell fourth, and Mcafee fifth. Samantha Resch led the women into turn one. Nicole Henderson held a close second followed by Kalynn Mcafee. Henderson was able to stick with Resch for a few laps before Resch put some distance on the field, going on to take the win followed by Henderson and Mcafee. Cameron Smith and Ryan Dragunas got the jump off the line in the Kids 150 class. As they drifted wide, smilin’ little Chase Smith squared it up and went from third to first. Dragunas didn’t give Chase any breathing room and shadowed him like a hawk. Cameron was right with Dragunas trying everything to get into the mix. With one lap to go, Chase slipped and went wide, giving Dragunas the opportunity to take the lead and the win followed by Chase and then Cameron. The yellow and blue covered the front row for the Open B class. The Bromley boys, Daniel and Joe, pulled up to the line in their matching Bromley’s Suzuki attire. This year the boys have split wins at several races, making their father very proud. With two totally different riding styles, the boys are able to run different lines and make things interesting. In between the brothers at the line was Michael Sponseller riding for Standiford Racing. Dan Bromley got the jump followed by Sponseller and then Joe Bromley. Michael Cortese sat in the fifth spot followed by Jason

19 Cunningham, Anthony Crabbe and Ryan Anderson. Cunningham worked on Cortese until he was able to take away the fifth spot in turns three and four. D.Bromley was able to check out in front, while Sponseller had his hands full with J.Bromley. D.Bromley took home the win, and Sponseller finished in second with only a wheel over third. Brian Phillips of Auburn, Pennsylvania, returned to Timonium for this year’s action. Phillips held national #25 up until having a rough time last season with some back luck. The first start resulted in a pileup coming out of turn two with pole sitter Albert Cook at the bottom of it. The race was restarted with Cook on the penalty row. Phillips grabbed the lead and ran away with the win. Cory Strickler was able to hold the third spot followed by Jason Cole, Kenneth Doane, Tom Anania, Samantha Resch and Cook. Cole was all over Strickler but just couldn’t make the move to take the spot. Cook and Cole returned to the track for the 125 main event where Joey Alexander held the pole spot. Beating Alexander off the line was John Henderson. Alexander held second followed by Ryan Dragunas and Colton Smith. Smith was able to drive it in underneath Dragunas coming into turn one on the second lap. Cook was unlucky, going down on the first lap. Smith made an attempt to take the second position away from Alexander but sat up and high-sided. Henderson went on to take home the win. Roy Miller rolled out onto the track with his “glowing” yellow rims. He held the pole position in the 250 class after his semi win. This race would be almost like a North versus South representation, being that four riders were out of Pennsylvania and four riders out of Maryland. Miller led the field into turn one followed by the young gun Colton Smith on his Triple J Racing/ Don’s Kawasaki four stroke. Richard Mellinger came into turn one in third followed by Joey Alexander, Dillon Cava, Chris Klinefelter and Matt Trout. Mellinger got a wheel underneath of Smith coming out of turn two to take over the second spot. Alexander went wide coming out of turn two, giving Cava the fourth spot. Cava was able to put a charge on Smith, but the opportunity never came for the pass. Mellinger fought hard to take the lead from Miller, and they battled until Miller made it to the checkered flag. Mellinger had to settle for second followed by Smith, Cava, Alexander, and Trout. The PA boys, or men I should say, because three out of the top four usually run the 30+ class, showed that experience led youth in battle. Klinefelter, Miller, Alexander, and Cava all returned for the second fastest class of the night, the 450’s. Klinefelter was able to run a faster semi than the fast qualifier Perry Phillips. Klinefelter was able to get the jump just ahead of Phillips. Nick Henderson was able to come from the back row and take over the third spot followed by Miller and Cava. Cava went down in turn two collecting the Miller Motorsports rider, Tom Majeski. Klinefelter had his hands full the entire race, with Phillips being pressured every inch of the race. Henderson lost the third position to Miller about halfway through the race when Miller got him coming out of turn two. Klinefelter ended up with the win followed by Phillips, Miller, Henderson, Cava, Stephen Lerch, Majeski, and Alexander. The next class is where it all began, the Vintage class. Back in the 1960’s Spain introduced one of the prettiest bikes ever to hit the track, the Bultaco. These bikes were instant winners, screaming down the tracks. The Bultacos used to own the indoors. Tonight they were untouchable in the Vintage class. Rob “scarecrow” Smith and Matt Langrehr differ in age by at least twenty years, but both are the smoothest riders on the track. Smith was able to jump out front and walk away from the field, proving that he still has what it takes to win year after year. Langrehr was able to capture the second spot over Chris Hathaway, who held constant pressure the entire race. Nick Taylor was able to finish in fourth on his project bike that he finally got dialed in. Michael Cortese finished fifth followed by Todd Martin on the Mason Dixon Dirttracker’s Hodaka and Michael Greer. The fastest event of the night was saved for last, the Pro class. Fastest qualifier Donnie Mullen, held a large lead in the semi when he slipped on a tire and came rolling into the infield, destroying his hopes of making the main. The incident gave Cory Strickler the win and would seat him second on the line next to Jason Isennock for the final. Isennock was able to get off the line first followed by Austin Greenland, Strickler, Kayl Kolkman and Paul Allison. Coming out of turn two Allison made a move that took him from fifth all the way up to second. Greenland was all over the back of Allison until he went down in turn three. Isennock walked away with the win followed by Allison, Kolkman, Strickler, Joe Gathercole, Brian Phillips, RJ Hart and Greenland. The night was a ton of fun and full of action. The Baltimore County Trail Riders Association would like to thank Lucas Oil and Pete’s Cycles along with all the other sponsors that helped the event happen. They would also like to thank the riders and spectators that continue to make this an enjoyable event.

45th Annual District 7 Awards Banquet December 4, 2010 • By Ryan Henderson The season has come to an end, and winter is upon us. After a busy and joyous year, it is time to honor those who have succeeded. On behalf of all the riders, we would like to thank the board members of District 7 for the wonderful program that they have put on this year. We would also like to thank the riders and sponsors that have kept motorcycle racing alive and running. This year’s banquet was held at the Marriot Hotel in Lutherville-Timonium, Maryland. The night began around
6pm and officially ended at midnight, when groups dispersed to their room gatherings. Mother Nature brought a surprise with our first snowfall of the season. Though the weather was bitter, the hall was comforting. The food was steaming, and the drinks were plentiful. Before I get into the details of the night, I would like to speak a little about those that are recovering at this time. There are two riders who have been fighting hard battles to get back on their feet. At the beginning of the season,
Colton Smith received the Triple Crown Award for his three championship titles in the Dirt Track Series.
Tyler Haas took a spill on the oval at Trailway Speedway. When returning to his feet, he was hit by another rider and left paralyzed from the chest down just like me. He and his family are in high spirits and seem to be doing rather well with the hand that he has been dealt. He is a young and growing 16-year-old, so his body is willing to battle this thing full force. Please keep him in your prayers. Hunter Pitts is also battling after a crash he sustained at Budds Creek toward the end of the season. His condition has affected not only the use of his legs, but his entire body. I have added a link where you can find his story, leave him a message, and help out his family, http://www.caringbridge. org/visit/hunterpitts. The first award is a distinctive honor given to an individual who has set exceptional records and/or has made significant contributions to the sport of motorcycling for District 7. The Hall of Fame was created in 1979 by Billy Heygster, who gave this “President’s Award” to five honorable members. This year’s award is being given to Chris Borger. Borger is not only our Dual Sport and Enduro Chairman, but winner of the 950cc-1200cc Adventure class. He is a major asset to the riding world and deserves praise for the time and effort that he has put into the sport. The second award of the night is known as “The Sportsman of the Year Award.” This annual award is a special honor given to an individual who is elected and chosen through a secret ballot by members of the District 7 Board on nominations made by the board and our members after being discussed and voted on at a regular meeting. This year District 7 would like to recognize Ken Doane as “Sportsman of the Year.” Doane is our current Hare Scrambles Chairman and participates in all sorts of events. No matter where he’s riding or working, there is a smile on his face. Cristina Chrysovergis made the ladies proud, dominating In July of 1995, our riding community the 50cc Oil class. lost one of its most promising riders.

21 Jason Isennock received the Triple Crown after winning three classes in the Dirt Track Series.
Jesse Snyder won his three youth classes in motocross, making him another Triple Crown winner.
Jack Stedding stepped in to receive the Rodney Farris award for Donnie Mullen National #71 presented by Taylor White, a friend of the late Farris.
Last year he was only beaten one time during the local season. Rodney Farris was national number 92 and the man to beat at all the local tracks. The only person ever able to dominate the Timonium Indoors like Rodney is this year’s recipient of the “Rodney Farris Award,” “Mr. Shortrack” Don Don Mullen. Mullen has the ability to maneuver a bike the way that most find impossible. Last year he was only beaten one time during the local season. His trip to Daytona went well, with two awesome rides. George Ireland has put together an amazing site that centers around our local racing world. You can find photos of Rodney and all the local riders, plus the tracks on his site: http://picasaweb.google.com/geoireland/RodneyF arris02?authkey=Gv1sRgCKm4gqLa9Z6uSg&feat=dire ctlink# Brett Friedel, Chairman of Dirt Track, awarded topseated dirt trackers in the district. Colton Smith was a triple award winner for capturing the titles in the 125cc, 250cc, and 250 Sportsman classes. Jason Isennock shared the award, winning the Vintage, Open A, and
The Hall of Fame Award was presented to Chris Borger by Wayne Sody.

Sportsman Open classes. Bill Menges, Chairperson for Observed Trials, awarded the top trials riders of the district. Chris Hoffmeister was awarded the “2010 District 7 Sportsman of the Year Award.” Dual Sport was the third discipline honored at the event. Chris Borger, Dual Sport and Enduro Chairman, gave out the awards. He then continued with the Enduro awards. Hare Scrambles were next on the list for awards given by Ken Doane, Hare Scrambles Chairman. Following the Scrambles awards came the ATV Motocross honorees. Chairman and Congressman Jeremy Brandwein did the honors. Our Youth MX Chairman, Ted Orr, followed the ATVs with the recipients for the youth motocross awards. Ted’s son, Matthew, won the championship in the 65 10-11 class. Both Dakota Robbins and Steven Schultz were double winners in the classes that they had entered. Vice President Steve Carruthers awarded the big bike classes. Michael Reynold’s Jr. took home the championships in the 250C and Open C classes. TJ Irvin came out on top of the 250 A and Collegeboy classes. Ashley Dronenburg, the Women’s MX Chairman, was awarded with the Women’s championship. Vet/Sr.
Chairman John Kernan had the honor of awarding the Veterans and Seniors. Christopher O’ Hara proved that age doesn’t slow a rider down, taking the championship titles in the 25 Plus, Vet 30 plus A, and the 35 Plus A. Wade Blevins doubled with wins in both the Vet plus 30 B and the 35 Plus Amateur. After the awards, it was time to let loose and break it down. The DJ took over, and the music came on. John Kernan and Ted Orr launched gifts into the crowd of children. The crowd began to disperse before heading back to their rooms for late night gatherings. We would like to thank the following sponsors for this year’s events and hope to see everyone at the break of the new season: Pete’s Cycle, Shenandoah Honda, Dutrow’s Sales and Service, Cernics, Motoxpress, Lancaster Harley Davidson, Ellicott City Motorsports, Moose Racing, Matto Cycle, Don’s Kawasaki, Fredericktown Yamaha, Bob’s BMW, Tucker Rocky, TWIGG Cycles, and MRA I would personally like to thank the Baltimore County Trail Riders, District 7, Pete’s Cycle, Roost MX, Roy Miller, family, and friends for making this season possible for me and RHDesigns. The Riding Solutions/Standiford Racing Hondas ran well this season. Mike Sponseller was able to take home the win in the Open Amateur class.
It was great to have Georgie Price back on the track.
Timonium Indoors December 18, 2010 • By: Ryan Henderson “Mike Sponseller Gets One for Standiford Racing”
We were back down at the Timonium Fairgrounds for another night of racing, just before the Christmas holiday. For three years, Mike Sponseller has been mounted on a Riding Solutions/ Standiford Racing Honda trying to go for a win. Tons of bad luck has kept him from getting out front in the past. Being a tall guy on a small bike may have had something to do with it. In the past year he has jumped back onto a big bike, and his luck has changed. He has consistently been making the podium, and it has finally paid off. He grabbed the lead last week in the Open Am class and looked as though he was going to walk away with a win, but went down. Saturday night Sponseller jumped out in front in the Open Am class and battled the entire race with the #13 of Kevin Bills. Bills was right there waiting for a mistake that never came. Sponseller went on to take the win. Benny McFadden was able to hold onto the third spot. Wade Blevins had pressure from TJ Irving for the entire race, and with just a lap to go Irvin pushed Blevins out of the way in turn three to take over the fourth spot. The Adult 50 class was full of action. You’ve got grown men on bikes built for kids a third their size, which ends up being a comedy of errors when you throw eight guys on the track at the same time. Ian Lau was able to hold it together in order to take home the win. Mike Cortesse finished second followed by Mike Standiford, Jerry Alexander and Jacob Jenkins. The AMA Dirt Track Grand Championships choose a rider every year to represent the youth of our sport. This year there were four nominees, three of which came from our local district. Dalton Gauthier runs the #14g, Tristan Avery runs the #4c, and Brandon Price either has the #1n or #92. All three riders have exceptional skill and have won many events. This year’s Youth Dirt Track Rider of the Year went to Brandon Price for his six wins between the 65 and 85 classes. He was able to make every main event. He is only the second rider to ever win this honorable title while riding a 65, as the award is open to anyone on a 65 and up. He went on to win both main events at the last race of the year. In the 65 class he worked his way to the front and was followed by Chris Thomas, Dillon Curry, Nathan Reichert and Karl Wheeler. He was able to hold off Reichert in the 85 class. Reichert brought home second followed by Trevor Williams and Petey Colonell. The Baltimore County Trail Riders Association would like to thank Pete’s Cycle, Lucas Oils, and all the other sponsors of the event. I would like to thank the BCTRA, the Coles, the Langrehrs, Chris Hathaway, Brett Friedel, my friends and family for making it possible for me to enjoy the event and get in some seat time. I can’t wait to do it again next year. You can check out my website at www.RHDesigns95s. Evansville Snow/Mud Scrambles The UTV class is becoming very popular.
January 9, 2011 • By Jamie B. Brown • Evansville MX Park - Berwick, PA
After closing out an awesome season of racing at Evansville MX Park, the temperatures were starting to drop and tracks around the area were getting their 2011 season schedules ready to go. But here at Evansville we were also starting to make plans for the snow/ mud scramble races to keep people from getting cabin fever. Temperatures were in the high 20s for Round # 1, with a wind chill temperature reaching 4 degrees, and there were about 3 to 4 inches of snow on the ground. What better timing to have a snow/ mud scramble then in these types of conditions? Riders came from as far away as three to four hours just to come play in the snow and ice. The race order consisted of quad expert, all the way down to the mini classes, and they even had a UTV class with several side-by-side vehicles taking the track and trying the challenging course that was set out for them. Riders could also choose to either use studs or be brave and go without. You can check out the results here, and be sure to log on to www.AwesomePhotos.com to view and purchase the latest racing photos from this event. There are three rounds of the series left, with the final two in February. Check out www.EvansvilleMXPark. com for all the details.

Race Prep Getting Ready for Sunday
Has Success in Mexico

About the ISDE
The International Six Days Enduro ran its 85th edition in Morelia, Mexico, in 2010. It was an excellent opportunity for KTM’s Enduro Factory Racing Team riders to shine on the international stage as well as a chance for KTM to provide full customer support and spare parts for hobby riders who take part in this popular annual event.
World Trophy – USA takes fourth place
It was Mike Brown and Kurt Caselli who were the key riders in Team USA, which sealed fourth place overall in the World Trophy, with Caselli in the top five except for Day One, when he finished sixth, and Brown, who never slipped below 10th, consistently up with the leading group.
Club Trophy
This class is reserved for what the FIM calls “hobby riders,” better defined as typically firstyear riders to the world stage. The club riders compete both as individuals and on a team. This year local racers Andrew Delong, Fred Hoess and Wally Palmer teamed up to race in the world’s largest off-road race, the International Six Days Enduro. The ISDE takes place over six days of racing with nine special tests or sections on each day. The day consists of about 150 miles total, and racers earned points based on who gets to the finish the fastest. Points are then tallied, and the best points earner (the lowest) is the winner of the event in the different classes offered. In talking with Andrew, he said he rode on some of the knarliest terrain he ever has in one of the knarliest countries on the face of the earth. The locals were all friendly and happy to have the racers in their town of around 1,000,000 people; however, if you follow the news even the slightest, you’ll know that Mexico is the safest place on earth to go race your dirtbike. One of the biggest obstacles of the week was the hill that went straight up for five minutes. No zig-zagging, this baby had you climbing straight up, then across a rocky ridge, then straight down for “5 minutes.” The other unique thing about
competing in the ISDE is that the rider has to do all of his own maintenance. If your mechanic touches your machine for anything other than refueling you are DQ’d, out of the event. Can you image the endurance needed to race 150 miles a day for a week, then have to change your filters, fix your flats, and tighten the chain, and God forbid if anything major happens? Andrew raced in the C-2 class, which includes 250 – 450cc Two Stroke bikes. How’d he do, you ask? How about third in his class and 66th overall out of 700 entries. The team, oh yeah – they came in 4th overall in Club competition and were the 1st American Club Team in points. Not bad for a bunch of “hobby riders,” if you ask me. Andrew asked that we thank everyone that made his trip possible to the ISDE. It took a lot of help and fundraising to get there, and he hopes to return in 2011.

Whether you are a new racer or someone who has been racing for years, we all know motocross is such a multifaceted sport. It involves days of preparation, work, and planning. Each and every family runs their own program with who does what to get everything and everyone to and from the races. In the following article, I will explain how you, as the racer, can prepare yourself and your equipment. Please take into consideration that each and every person does things slightly different. Throughout the week, a racer should be working out (aside from going riding) as much as possible. Personally, I do cardio four days a week and lifting three days a week. Monday should be a day set aside for recovery from the weekend, so a small cardio workout followed by some stretching would be perfect. Tuesday through Thursday are the days that are prime for lifting. Monday and Friday without lifting allows your muscles to recover. Friday would be ideal for a light cardio workout (if you have the time with packing, and possibly heading to the races that evening). Stretching is a huge component of a workout that needs to be focused on. As a racer, you must be flexible and agile. For example, when a person crashes, if they do not bend and flex, bones, muscles, and/or ligaments can get torn or broken. As far as practicing throughout the week, as much or as little as you have time to go riding is perfect, but a workout routine should still remain constant. Any practicing will benefit. If a crash occurs (and we hope it does not), a good way to recover from that is stretching and cardio if possible (Getting your heart rate up will speed the healing process and reduce swelling and bruising). For nutritional guidance, we all can benefit from cutting out the junk food. Racers specifically need to watch their sugar intake on the weekends because it can cause arm pump, and it is simple energy that burns out quickly. If there is a day to splurge on sweets, I prefer to do in on a Monday as a treat. Any carbohydrate loading should preferably be done Thursday or Friday night. Many times people carb load on a Saturday night, but actually it tires your body out even the next morning still digesting all of the carbs. The dinner before a race
should include both some carbs and protein, but not an entire pasta dinner. If you know it is going to be a hot weekend, start drinking extra water days in advance. Another helpful hint is to snack on something salty so that you can retain fluids on practice and race days to keep hydrated. On the actual day of racing, the key is to keep your body fueled with the correct things. Water and Gatorade are some of the fluids one should be drinking. One should stay away from caffeinated and/or sugary drinks. You heart rate will increase plenty when you’re on the line, the Monster energy drink will only spike it higher. Nothing too heavy or greasy should be eaten either. Fruits, vegetables, and sandwiches are some simple things that can be easily packed to go to the track. Now that your body is ready, it’s time to talk about your equipment. Throughout the week, you (or, like in my case, Dad) should be washing your bike, changing your air filters, and lubing your chain as you go riding. We always make sure Friday night is set aside for some extra attention to our equipment. On Friday, go over the entire bike, making sure the air pressures in the tires is good, the spokes are all tightened, the chain is lubed, the air filter is clean, the oil is changed (if needed), and if you need to replace or fix anything else, it is done now. Also, we like to pack up Friday night, making sure all the gear, gas, bikes, stands, tools, tear offs, and bike washing necessities are in the trailer. This makes it easier on Saturday or Sunday morning. Then, when you leave for the track, your bike is ready to ride when you get there! I hope everyone has benefited one way or another or gotten a new idea to try! As I previously stated, everyone has their own programs going on, so if you have any ideas, tips, or suggestions when you see me, let me know! As you may know, I hold an annual “Girls Just Wanna’ Ride” event, which will be held again this year on May 21st. If you or someone you know is interested in more information, please get in contact with me; you can find me on FB!
Have fun, ride safe!

I pray everyone had a merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year. February is finally here, and we are ever so close to getting the bikes back out. I know many of us find this time of year difficult, especially when our sport is preferred and enjoyed more when it is 80 degrees. I find myself this time of year climbing the walls in anticipation of the spring weather and going back to the best sport in the world, motocross. I know many of us sometimes wish we could just skip through this time of year. If we would just stop for a moment and look at the season for what it truly means, we would find that this time of year is beautiful and very fulfilling. This time of year is a time to stop and take notice of all God’s glory and look at all he has given us, and we should thank him for it. We should take time to remember God in those special moments in our lives, especially when he sent his son into the world for no other purpose than to show his love for you and me. We so often get caught up in our own little worlds and want to skip through this time of year to get back to motocross. I challenge you, friends, to not be in such a hurry. Stop for a moment and take notice to this beautiful season and all of the blessings God has bestowed on you. Look at what you have been given, and be thankful for it. God provides all things, such as good health, friends, family, food, shelter, and a job. Oh yeah! Do not forget the ability to enjoy life through motocross as well. What a great God we have! We have been given so much, and we should be thankful for this time of year. This time of year God provides us also with a time of much-needed rest. We should take this time to look back and reflect on what God is doing in our lives and praise him who gives us an opportunity to have a wonderful future with him. So be patient, my friends, we are almost there, and before you know it we will be lining up at those gates and smelling the wonderful smell of exhaust. I leave you with this:

Yes, I said dirt; those little particles like to destroy motors. The best way to protect the running condition of any motor is with an air filter. The following is what can happen when fine dirt gets through the filter system and into a motor. On a two stroke, it will start to do a fine sanding to the reed petals and the carb slide, wearing them out. Then it will start sanding away at the piston rings, causing them to wear out and lose compression and power over a shorter period of time. However, the worst-case scenario for the two stroke would be if a lot of dirt gets into the motor, then the crank can wear out and seize, leaving you with a complete motor rebuild. It is far worse on a four stroke and more expensive to repair. Here is what happens to the four stroke motors. Any dirt that does stick to the carb slide will wear those parts out and clog up the main air jet, and this affects the performance of your machine. The rest gets pulled down the intake port and gets slammed into the valve and the valve seat. That dirt is getting pressed with 70 to 95 pounds of spring force as the valves open and close 33 times per second at 8,000 rpms. That’s a lot of wear there. The dirt that does not become part of the seat and valve then gets passed on into the cylinder to cause more wear on the cylinder wall and piston rings. That just sands out everything and then gets turned into carbon, the black buildup you see on the piston top and in the exhaust system. The dirt that becomes part of the valve and seat will not let the valve close all the way, and compression will be lost there and in some cases will not allow the machine to start. That’s the ugly side of dirt for off-road riders. I use a good foam filter over the cloth ones. Why? For one, they’re cheaper on my budget and they trap a lot more dirt than any cloth filter can claim to. A cloth filter claims more hp for my machine, true to a point. I took a proper foam filter for a 400ex and the proper cloth one and installed them on my flow bench, and what happened was that the cloth one flowed 10 cfm’s (that’s cubic feet per minute) more. That means it’s less then 1/10 of an hp gain. But the cloth one lets so much fine dirt in that it wears motors out, meaning a properly oiled foam filter will save the motor over time. There are good air filter oils available on the market today, so please use them. Just don’t over oil, and do not use the real sticky stuff, which will make the motor run rich as it’s not getting enough air for the jetting you have. For those that want to run the cloth type, definitely run a prefilter like an Outerwear’s nylon type to help keep the fine dust out. Clean the filters with simple green or a good degreaser. Never use gas or kerosene that will destroy the foam and the glue that holds them together. Make sure the filters are on tight and sealed. To accomplish this you can run a bead of grease on the filter where it makes contact with the air box. With the filter cleaned and secured, you can now move on to the carb or efi. Make sure the boot clamps are tight. When they’re loose you will see dirt collecting around the areas where fuel spray is leaking out. What leaks out also leaks in, meaning as fuel comes out dirt goes in. Clean the areas affected and tighten the clamps. Do not over-tighten them because it will move the boot off as you ride. A loose exhaust system will allow dirt in as well. There are positive exhaust waves (moving out), then there is a return exhaust wave called a negative wave (moving in). This negative wave can pull dirt in from unsealed points in the exhaust and get them to the exhaust valves in an extreme case. So make sure you have a good exhaust gasket at the head and the mid-section, and make sure the silencer is on tight. Use the orange heat silicone to seal pipe sections that have no gasket. To install a muffler correctly, install the head pipe first, but do not tighten the nuts. Install the silencer. Then starting with the head pipe, tighten the nuts and work your way back to the silencer. That should help keep your motor running healthy, and please remember that carb and exhaust maintance goes along with air filter maintenance too, so don’t overlook that important part.

2010 ECEA Awards Banquet Lancaster Host Resort • January 22, 2010 By MRA & Russ Brown The East Coast Enduro Association (ECEA) hosted their 38th Annual Awards Banquet in late January in Lancaster, PA. The ECEA is made up of 19 individual clubs that cover a five-state area. Their goal is to host sanctioned racing events while promoting the sport of off road motorcycling. For 2011, their schedule will include 16 Enduros, 14 Harescramble races and 5 Dual Sport Rides. The day started off in the early afternoon with sponsors of the series displaying their wares at a vendor fair. This allowed the racers and their families time to browse the offerings and do some much-needed off season bench racing before the awards ceremonies began. Up first were the youth harescramble series awards around 4 in the afternoon, followed by an evening meal at 7 p.m. with adult awards for the enduro and harecramble series to follow. Kenny Held was your emcee for the youth awards, and he began by thanking the clubs, sponsors and riders of the series. Enduro champ and ISDE racer Andrew Delong then spoke to the youth racers. Andrew began racing the ECEA on 50cc bikes and grew up through the ranks racing at the ISDE in 2010. He told the
kids to stay in school, listen to their parents and work hard. This formula has served Andrew well over the years, and he hopes to pass it on to the rest of the kids racing the series. Awards were presented, then a couple of Pitster Pros were given away to the 100 % club participants. All you needed to do was attend every round of the ECEA Harescramble Series and you became eligible to win a brand new motorcycle. Three were given away on the day courtesy of Fun Factory Racing and Pitster Pro. In the adult series awards, two guys rose to the top that have been racing the ECEA Series all their lives. Both are national caliber contenders and friends to boot. Andrew Delong was your Enduro Grand Champion, with the Harescramble Grand Champion award going to Jerod Stoner. Both are training in Florida this winter, so watch for them to be at the top of the heap again in 2011. You can check out the complete point standings at www. ecea.org along with club information and their 2011 series schedule. War on Ice at the Sovereign Center January 8, 2011 • Reading, PA Story By MRA • Photos By John Sherer at www.iso-photo.com
There was a great crowd on hand in Reading, PA.
Round six of the 35th Annual World Championship ICE Racing Series found its way to Reading, PA, for the first time in its 35-year history. ICE/ International Championship Events is the promoter of this exciting show, and it all went down on a very cold night in early January. The world’s top professional riders came to town for the event, competing on state-of-the-art Manufacturers World Cup Motorcycles and wild ICE Unlimited Outlaw Quads. Participants raced it out on a treacherous solid ice track specially prepared inside the arena. Over 20 races were run off in 2 ½ hours to crown the Reading Round Champions in both divisions. In addition, local riders could participate in classes for both bikes and quads. There was a pit bike class, and the ice flew when the go carts took to the track for the enjoyment of the crowd. It was a show up and ride event. No practice was given, and the amateur racers got one heat race and then on to the main event. The Pro divisions were offered two heats and a main event. You can check out all the details on this exciting series at www.icespeedway.com
Sammy Wiggins wins the Quad Pro final on his H-D powered machine.
# 78 takes the win in the Go Cart division.
The “Wild Child” Mandy Brodil launches her quad in Unlimited Outlaw competition.
