MRA JULY 2002 • 2

Happy 4th of July Everybody. What a great holiday - we get to celebrate the freedom's that we have in this great country of ours. We also get a day off work and get to see the fireworks. We also get to go racing and roost a little dirt on our buddies. We have so many freedoms here in America that we sometimes take for granted. We don't mean too,,, but sometimes we just do. I would like to ask everybody this year to take a minute to be grateful for everything we've been blessed with, and don't forget to thank all the men and women who have fought and died for the good ole' U S of A. We're about half way through the race season here in District 6, and things are heating up. There are a lot of close points races going on locally and of course don't forget the weather, it's starting to get hot. Make sure you take plenty of water with you to the track. Also, if you get a chance, watch some of the local expert riders, they've been doing pretty good at some of the National Events. And as always, keep the comments and suggestions coming, remember it's your paper. See you at the races.

CONGRATULATIONS/GOOD LUCK To Daniel Holton, Jr. of Conestoga, PA. Daniel qualified at the

Waldon Playboy Regional Qualifier for the Loretta Lynn Amateur National Series being held the first week of August in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee.

Daniel finished 5th overall in the 85cc 7-11 Stock Class with 2

ninth place finishes and a final moto 1st place ride. Approximately

14,000 riders from all over the US attempt to qualify for a spot on

the gate at Loretta Lynn's Ranch. There are 32 different classes and only 42 riders from each class qualify to go. Just getting there is a major accomplishment, this is where the champions of tomorrow are born. Daniel, congratulations and we all wish you the best of luck at the finals.

“Fathers Day - June 16, 2002” Sleepy Hollow MX Park

– By Jim Bull

Sleepy Hollow, what a great place for a kid to go motocross racing. First of all you don't have to get up with the roosters to get there in time for sign up, Sleepy doesn't start practice until 11:30 AM on Sundays. Second, if you can get your parents up to get you there a little early take along your bicycle or RC car and have a blast with all the other kids. Third, there's a class for just about every mini cycle ever made, so you don't need to talk your mom and dad into buying you some high dollar race bike, and to top it all off everyone who enters goes home with a trophy whether you finish the race or not. Now there are a lot of really cool tracks in the district, but this month we just wanted to tell you about

Having Fun before the Races

racing at the Hollow. Fathers Day was very warm and sunny this year, but it had rained hard for a couple of days before the event. I know all the kids had a blast in practice because they were up to their knees in mud. Donna and the crew over at the mini track got right on the ball and by race time they had the track in pretty good shape. There was still a decent size mud hole about half way down the starting line straight, but most everyone was able to cruise right through it.

Nice Air!

what lies in front of it. You will be running over it! Now you wait for what seems like hours for the moto in front of you to be over. Relax, don’t get anxious. Remember you’re supposed to be having fun! Just concentrate on the job at hand. Play out in your head what you need to do when the gate falls. Visualize in your mind pulling the holeshot. Basically, all the things you are going to do to get there. Be positive, not nervous or scared.

Riding Tips for the Serious Racer

STARTS WITH REACTIVE SUSPENSION, INC. By Andy Fleck & Al Carr Although a fast bike, speed, stamina and aggression may get you the moto win, it’s a lot easier if you get a good start. Many riders don’t take the start very seriously. A friend told me he was sitting on the starting line at Evansville his first race of the year thinking to himself – “Gee, I wonder what gear I should be starting in?” DOH?!?! (You know who you are.) The time spent between the 1 minute board going sideways and getting through the first corner can be very intense, scary, painful, or just plain fun. The first thing to decide is what gear do I start in? If you are on an 80 or 125, chances are you may start in 1st gear. STARTING IN 1ST: After you’ve picked your gate and cleaned all the loose debris away from your starting area, make sure to check the area around the gate and

Now the #2 board is up. If you are having a mechanical problem now is the time to let the starter know by raising your hand. No problems…let’s rock! After you’ve adjusted your goggle strap several times and just about have your fuel petcock twisted off because you’ve checked it several million times (it’s on already), the #1 board goes up. Rev your bike hard a few times to make sure its warm and not loaded up. Then put it in gear. Put your left foot on the footpeg and tucked up in, slightly against the shifter so you’re ready to shift. Get your weight up over the center of the bike with your head and shoulders over the bars and with elbows bent. When the starter turns the board sideways let the clutch out so the bike just starts to creep ahead. Then roll the throttle to just about wide open. Concentrate on the gate. Focusing in on the hinge bolt on the gate beside has been known to increase reaction time. (This is taken from personal experience, not scientific data.) Whatever you think will trigger your reaction the fastest will be the best maneuver for you. It is well known that peripheral vision will pick up movement faster than staring straight at something. Try to keep that in mind when picking a point to focus on. Once you see it move, dump the clutch with the throttle pinned. Get over the gate still leaning slightly forward. Do this so you don’t wheelie out of the gate. After you’ve cleared the gate, shift into second as fast as you can. Start sliding back on the seat while straightening your arms. Now you’re trying to get as much traction as possible and make good clean gear shifts to accelerate faster. Work yourself into a standing position hanging back over the rear wheel still hunting for all the traction you can get. Keep a finger or two on the clutch so you can slip it a little bit if you start to wheelie too much. Let your legs and arms flow with the bike to soak up any bumps. When it’s time to start breaking, stay standing as long as you can. You can brake much harder while standing and steer clear of troubled rid-

ers. Be aware of what everybody around you is doing. If everybody is of the same caliber rider as you, you should be able to stay cool and get through the first corner without issue. Now is not the time to be defensive. If you start getting paranoid and nervous, you are going to make mistakes. The best thing to do is to concentrate on getting through the corner clean…not by crashing. Possibly making some passes, being aggressive. If your leading, going into the first turn, remember, everybody is going to be breathing down your neck, You pretty much dictate the breaking point. Brake too soon – conspicuous tread patterns will appear on your back. Brake too late – you’ll get punted to the cheap seats. STARTING IN 2ND: If you are able to pull a second gear start it is definitely a benefit. So that you can balance the bike in a straight line more easily and get to the first corner faster, you should start with both feet on the ground. The tradeoff is there is greater room for error. You will have to slip the clutch just the right amount so that you don’t bog the engine. This takes practice. These days with the 4 strokes on a short start you might not even have to shift. POINTERS: Many of the tracks in the district allow you to practice at the starting area. This is a great opportunity to get a feel for the length of the start, What gear you will be reaching during the start, and where you will feel comfortable getting on the brakes to make the corner. When you’re going out for practice don’t just blitz out on to the tract to win another practice session. Stop… make sure the track is clear and practice a start or two. You will definitely benefit from it when you’re on the gate for your first moto. Another thing to do is to go to the start when you have time during the day and see how long the starter waits to drop the gate after the #1 board goes sideways. Some of these guys can be pretty predictable with the timing. Now with some luck, good reaction time on the gate, decent traction, and the fellow moto-head on either side of you hogging your line or goon riding into you and taking you out, you get the holeshot. That was the easy part! Now all you have to do is stay in front and win the moto. Stay tuned ‘till next month for more.

The 1st Rule of Two-Stroke Performance:

More Air = More Power Only maximum air intake, correctly

accelerated and distributed into the crankcase can deliver maximum power.

The Boyesen Guarantee Every Boyesen product comes with a money back guarantee. If you are not completely satisfied with any Boyesen product, return it for its full refund.

An Intake Valve the Size of Your Fist Delivers Air with the Power of a Tornado To maximize airflow and release the hidden power in your race nike, replace your stock intake valve with a Boyesen RAD Valve. Integrated into the seamless, tenzalloy chamber is a quadrant of aerodynamic directional dividers. This patented, dyno-proven system power channels the charge evenly for instant, explosive movements of air at velocities of up to 500 MPH. Intelligently controlled by a set of Pro Series Reeds, you’ll get maximum flow velocity across the entire RPM range, and at all throttle settings. Each Boyesen RAD Valve is unique — tailor-made to a single model, year and displacement. While other aftermarker valves might change flange sizes or bolt patterns, they’re basically generic — and require you to irreversibly cut your intake boot to install! But with the RAD Valve, there are no compromises in power, no modifications needed. A true, bolt-on power boost: no kidding, no cutting.

I knew the day would come when I'd be at some race track, watching from a distance my son sitting on his dirt bike at the starting gate. I never seriously gave those fleeting images much thought,,, after all,,, it was my son's dream, his goal, his ambition to race his dirt bike. There just always seemed to be something stopping him or us from allowing him to fulfill his desire to race his dirt bike. Believe me,,, I've had plenty of time to prepare myself for this very moment. His Grandmother bought him his very first dirt bike (JR 50), when he was only 4 months old! The first couple of Christmas' we'd bring it back in the house and put it beside the Christmas Tree. He loved it..... #11 MRA Sponsored Trevor Bull Anyway,,, let's fast forward to today,,, my son Trevor will be 11 years old in August and he'll be racing for the first time on June 16th at Sleepy Hollow. As a mom,,, those passing visions of him getting the hole shot, being out front, "breezing" through the race, winning the race, standing on some podium, and being awarded some hugh trophy, is not exactly how I'm visioning it today,,,,, I'm so excited for him, but so nervous and concerned, too. I'm gonna get through this "first" race, cuz I know a 'second' will follow and so on. My inner voice says, "He's gonna do just fine," and I'm gonna trust in that. I want to encourage him and he has to know that I,,, his mom,,,has got to be his greatest fan,,,,, Deep down,,, I wish I could be him for a day. Deb Bull - M.R.A.

Performance R eport What should I do to my bike each week between races? Many people don’t realize that the maintenance you do every week before the race can save you a lot of money. On today’s high performance machines a small problem or worn out part can cost you hundreds of dollars, if not fixed. Here are some of the things that should be checked every week after you ride, to make sure that your bike will be in top running condition for the next week’s ride or race. The fluids in your bike are what make it operate to it’s full potential; a lack of fluids can destroy a motor. Always be sure to check your coolant before every ride. The coolant helps keep your motor running at the proper temperature. If your motor is running hot you will not get full power from it, and you will also cause engine damage. If the day is extremely hot and you are running long motos you may push coolant out the overflow, which is normal. Also be sure to check for leaks or cracks caused by collisions or impacts from rocks. Always use a quality coolant like Spectro’s Year Round, which is designed for high performance aluminum radiators or the equivalent Engine and transmission fluid is another fluid that should be checked after every ride. With the new four-strokes using both engine and transmission fluid you have to check your individual bike’s manual for recommended amounts and intervals, but it is always safe to change your oil after every day of hard riding. Changing your oil frequently not only keeps your engine running in top shape, but also allows you to find problems early. As oil breaks down it will lose its’ color. If your oil is already black when you change it, it has been run to long, and needs to be checked sooner the next time. If your clutch oil is gritty or is full of metal flakes you may want to check your clutch or bottom end for wear or damage. Oil is the lifeblood of your engine and you should always be sure to use the good quality oil that is designed for the application you are using it for. Paying fourteen or fifteen dollars for oil may seem expensive, but it will prevent engine damage in the long run.

One of the most neglected and important things most people forget is the air filter. Each year we have numerous riders bring us their bikes that have destroyed engines, because they failed to properly maintain the air filter. An air filter needs to fit properly and be oiled and cleaned after every ride. In extremely dusty conditions some riders have a spare filter oiled and ready, and change it after the first set of motos. Any time you allow dirt into your engine you are asking for trouble and the most likely way for it to get there is by an improperly oiled filter. VPE recommends Twin Air’s oils and cleaners. First be sure to clean your filter thoroughly, using a quality cleaner, then wash it with warm soapy water, and

allow it to dry. Try not to twist and stretch it too much, as this can damage some filters. Then completely soak the filter in the oil and gently wring out the excess oil, be sure your filter is covered completely with oil! Next allow the filter to dry overnight. The best quality oils like Twin Air will remain tacky, yet not be dripping with oil after drying. If you don’t allow your filter to dry it may actually allow oil to be sucked into your engine and foul a plug or cause jetting problems until the filter dries properly. Your brakes and controls should also be checked each week. Make sure all your levers are working properly and your throttle tube is lubed and works smoothly. Clutch and throttle cables should be lubed and checked for wear or being out of adjustment. These are things many people overlook until they get to the races, and then are rushed to fix or adjust right before practice or their moto. Broken levers or misadjusted controls will break your concentration and may cause you to make costly mistakes like missed shifts and errors in corners. Your drive train should also be inspected after each race. Be sure your chain and sprockets are in good shape and not missing teeth or out of adjustment. A broken or thrown chain will cost you a DNF. Also be sure to check that your chain guides are all in good shape and are in proper alignment. A chain guide or roller may be knocked off or bent in a rut or in a contact with another rider during a race, and may not be very noticeable while you are riding. Of course you can’t anticipate everything that could go wrong with your bike while at the races, but with proper maintenance you cant prevent the most common failures. One mistake most people also make is to wait until the last minute to check over their bike. If you are running around the night before, or even the day of the race doing things that you could have done during the week, you will not have your mind on racing and will not prepared mentally when you get on the gate. After all that’s why factory riders have mechanics, so they can focus on winning the race and not worry about whether or not all the bolts are tight and there is gas in the bike. You have to learn about your own bike, each bike is different and the more you work on your bike the quicker and easier it will be to get your bike ready for the races. Remember, it doesn’t matter how fast you are, if your bike doesn’t stay together till the end of the race you can’t win.
