Happy 4th of July to all. Isn’t it great that we have the freedoms that we do here in this great country? Please take a moment this Independence Day to be thankful that we can go racing when ever and where ever we want. As I sit here writing this it’s raining again and the weekend’s coming. For flat trackers that means no racing, for the hare scramblers and mx’ers that means – not this again. Keep your chin up everybody, it’s gotta end soon. Motocrossers check this issue of MRA for the most up to date point standings as of deadline. I believe they’re still working on the hare scramble points, we’ll try to print them as soon as they’re available. Loretta Lynns is also coming up next month, be sure to cheer your friends and fellow racers on. I know everybody that’s headed to the ranch has worked their butt off to get there. Please give them a big pat on the back, it may be your turn one day soon. Remember to keep reading MRA for all you’re local race action, and keep an eye on our website: www.motorcycleracingaction.com maybe you’ll catch yourself in action. And please visit and support the advertisers in MRA, they help keep your sport strong. Until next time !!

Sponsors, this kids got them, Rickey Carmichael has nothing on Dylan Blettner from Hanover, PA riding for “ everybody “. No kidding aside MRA would like to give Dylan a big “way to go”. We’ve watched this young man start racing just early last season on a PW50 and running mid pack to bumping up to a faster bike and just a short year or so later grabbing the holeshot in both of his motos and racing for the overall win on the day. Congradulations Dylan on your first overall win of your racing career. Watch for this kid, he’s gonna go places. And be sure to watch MRA next month because you could be the next MRA hotshot.

MRA would like to feature Shane Simpkins from Northampton, PA. We caught up with Shane last month at the Flying Dutchmen MC in Pine Grove, PA. Shane is riding the #12 Extreme Machine out of Dave Gibsons East Coast ATV. Shane was pulling holeshots and winning motos all day long. Till the end of the day he had managed to take 1st overall in the outlaw class and 2nd overall in the 70cc modified class. Shane is starting to rack up some pretty impressive finishes this year, he’s won 5 out of the 7 races he’s competed in this year at the Dutchmen. When Shane isn’t on the track he enjoys playing basketball and riding his skate board. Shane asked that we give a big thanks to his mom & dad, his pop-pop and to East Coast ATV.

A few weeks ago I was helping my parents clear out their house of 28 years worth of stuff. My Mom is the type that never throws anything away that has sentimental value especially if it pertains to her kids. 20 years ago I would have called her crazy to keep some of the stuff she did but after spending a week emptying the house I am thankful for all the memories she has saved for me.

One of the things I came across was the parts manual for my '72 Husqvarna WR125. Ah that was my first new bike. I'd had some used clunkers before that, even a Yamaha 100 two-stroke twin cylinder street bike that I used to blast around the corn fields that surrounded our housing development. I was probably the most popular kid with the neighbors though as my bike was definitely the quietest. I still remember clearly the day we went down to Devon Honda to pick up the Husky. The whole family loaded into the station wagon and we drove an hour to get to the dealership, when we pulled into the parking lot there was my new bike parked out front, it was without a doubt the trickest bike ever built, up to that point anyway. After Dad had forked over the $1267.00 which by the way was twice what it would have cost for a Japanese 125 at the time, we went outside for the bike. The salesman asked if we wanted to test ride it. Did we want to test ride it? I was halfway to the bike before he even finished that sentence but my Dad very wisely did the test riding himself. I say wisely because you have to remember that the fastest thing I'd ridden up to that point was my buddies Honda SL70 which probably made all of 7 HP, the Husky was rated at 21, yep I would have splattered myself all over the side of the building.

We had to lay the bike on its side to load it into the back of the station wagon. I rode in back actually sitting on the bike laying on my side. I can remember the grips that were as smooth as a desk top (a set of Preston Petty Hex grips came shortly afterwards) The Tomaselli style throttle that turned so easily and smoothly compared to everything else I had ever ridden. The Magura levers, you could feel how strong they were, I wasn't going to snap these off like those chopsticks that came on the Japanese bikes. Real Knobby tires, Trelleborgs no less. none of that Trials Universal stuff that my buddies bikes came with. The huge 35mm chrome fork tubes flashed with each passing street light. The rich smell of Pre-mix dripping from the gas cap onto my leg. Did I care? Nah. All European bikes back then leaked gas. After riding you always had an interesting stain formed by the dirt sticking to the Pennzoil left behind from the evaporated Gasoline.
neighbor felt it best that he take the bike out first to make sure everything was safe with the bike and the track. I could just scream. After 15 minutes the bike and track were proclaimed ready for me. I fully expected a Nuke to go off at this point and I would never get to ride, but it didn't. After the bike was started for me, hey you have to understand I couldn't even touch the ground when I was on board and this bike had a left side kickstart, add to that the fact that the Motoplat ignition refused to make any kind of spark until the engine reached 921 RPM and it was obvious that a 98 lb. kid was never going to be able to start this bike on his own, but I could turn the throttle and shift.
We had to make the ride home with the windows down, one spark and we would have been a Vista Cruiser fireball. When we finally got home though it was dark and raining, figures. But it was Friday so Saturday was only a nights sleep away, Sleep, yeah right. It was like getting all your Xmas presents on Xmas eve and then having to go to bed without playing with them, pure agony.
To this day no other motorcycle has ever made a bigger impression on me. I've ridden more bikes than I can count, heck I raced the bike that Bob Hannah used to win the 250 GP at Unadilla in '86. But that Husky, wow, the first time I ran it up through the gears I thought I was on a 400. It was the most powerful thing I had ever ridden, it would climb any hill with ease, and traction, well lets just say when you are used to street tires in the dirt, knobbies are a revelation. I never wanted to stop riding and I didn't stop for nearly 30 years.
The next day dawned grey and drizzling. A neighbor of ours was the president of the Lehigh Valley Enduro Riders and offered to take us up to the local track. We could leave in a couple of hours. A couple of HOURS ?! Just shoot me and end the suffering, please. Two hours in the dentists chair would have passed more quickly. Eventually though we did get to the track. I had my helmet on before we got out of the van but our
I recount this tale to you because some of you too are at the beginning of this journey and will one day look back at this time with great fondness. So don't allow yourself to get rid of everything that connects you to this moment because what might seem unimportant today may be your greatest treasure tomorrow. See you at the races.

PAT H VA L L E Y H O S T S Northeast National Champs Racing to Grand Nationals – By Walt Cox Fifteen regional riders in 20 AMA motorcycle classes can represent the Northeast at the Grand National Championships as the 2003 Northeast National Champions following the third Amateur National on the half-mile track at the Williams Grove Speedway June 8. Three races make up the Northeast Nationals produced by Two Wheel Promotions, and they include a Short Track (ST) sponsored by Action Motor Sports of York on the Path Valley quarter-mile clay and also a Tourist Trophy (TT) scramble sponsored by Roxy's Cycles of Fayetteville that were held June 24 and 25 at the Path Valley Speedway Park, along with the Half Mile held at Williams Grove. M&S Honda Suzuki of Chambersburg, Action Motorsports of York, B&B Cycle of Lancaster, Roxy's Cycle of Fayetteville, M&S Harley Davidson of Chambersburg, Two Wheel Promotions, Lost Creek Cycles of Oakland Mills and Path Valley Speedway Park sponsored the half mile races. Scores from all three races were combined using the AMA's points system to determine the overall Northeast National Champions who will represent the Northeast region at the AMA Progressive Insurance Grand Championships June 30 through July 5 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. For the eight premiere Northeast Nationals divisions, AMA Sports provides travel money in addition to the trophies and vanity plates won locally. "The winners are all legitimate National Champions already, and now they can race for the Grand National Championships," explained John Winsett of Bainbridge, a local AMA director and also a partner in Two Wheel Promotions, which produced the races for the second straight year. Winners in the Pro-Am classes at the Williams Grove half-mile race will not compete with the amateurs in Illinois, and four-wheeler riders don't race either, so National Champions Cory Buhrman of Upper Strasburg, Chris Crull of Blain and Dane Delancey of Port Royal will not be racing in Illinois. To make up for that, some area riders will be racing as Northeast National Champions in more than one class. John Lewis V of Brandamore, already an Amateur Grand National Champion on smaller bikes, will represent the Northeast on both the 250 Modified and the 450 Modified bikes. Austin Greenland of Spring Mills, who won the Amateur Grand National TT last summer, will race in the 125 Modified and the 85 Modified 12-15 bikes. Grand National Champion Richard 'Rick' Winsett of Elizabethtown qualified to race in the 250A class and also won the Sportsman class. Among the youngest riders, Kenneth Venarchick of New Castle DE won Nationals in both the 50cc Junior 4-6 class and the 50cc Peewee 4-8 class, and Patrick Jacobsen of Montgomery NY won both the 85 Modified 7-11 title and the 85 DTX championship.
Kenneth Venarchick of New Castle DE won National Championships in two 50cc classes.
"We can be proud of all our great riders, and especially the youngsters. Not only are these young
Two Wheel Promotions honored the 2003 AMA Northeast National Amateur Champions with #1 bike plates after the third series race June 8 on the Williams Grove half mile track. people accomplished flattrack motorcycle racers, but they are also clean, polite and capable youngsters who can represent our region well in Illinois. We all hope they have safe races and an enjoyable time," said Path Valley promoter Ken Geesey. This year the AMA premiere classes are the 50cc Senior for 7-8 years old, 65cc Modified 7-11, 85 Modified 7-11, 125 Modified, 250 Modified, 450 Modified, 505 Modified, and the 30+ Open Singles. All of those who raced in the Nationals are qualified to race in Illinois. For information on flattrack motorcycle and fourwheeler racing, call the track at 717-349-7111 or AMA director and Two Wheel Promotions partner John Winsett at 717-426-4756. Four wheelers race every Saturday at Path Valley, and both the bikes and fourwheelers race every other week in either AMA District 6 events or unsanctioned races for track points. The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. The new phone number at the track for promoter Ken Geesey is 717349-7111. For information on the 2003 schedule and rules, race teams and fans can consult the website at www.pathvalley. com or they can email Two Wheel Promotions at twp@pathvalley. com.

The John Penton GNCC May 31, 2003
– By Trish Krachun, Pro Parts Racing
The 7th round of the GNCC series landed in Millfield, OH at the John Penton GNCC race course. This course, like many on the series this year, was extremely wet & muddy making it difficult for even the strong to survive. It took a lot of weather preparation on the ATV, skill & a whole lot of luck to make it to the finish line for this race! Only 38 racers made it on the last lap out of 296 competing in the afternoon session of the race! In most of the Pro/Pro Production & A classes only 1/3 - 1/2 of the classes completed the 4th lap which is an extreme rarity in GNCC racing! Lots of broken down quads littered the course by the end of the day waiting to be pulled back to the pits. Three-time series champion, LRD/KLOTZ backed Pro class racer Bill Ballance came out on top for the 6th time in 7 races this year. Ballance commented "This thing was awful, it was the worst one this year. That's cross country racing though. You need to be there in all conditions." And be there, he was... along with Pro Production's leader, Four-Stroke Tech backed Chad Duvall who finished 19 seconds behind Ballance for 2nd overall. "I told my mechanic before this started it was going to be a real long day. I'm just glad it's over," said DuVall. "Billy and I battled it out all day, even on the last lap. But the better man won today." Ballance later commented "I'm just glad it's over!" which was a common sentiment echoed by almost every racer to cross the finish line. Amazingly, Open A racer, Joe Kish put in an extremely awesome ride to claim 3rd overall.
Women's class broke the top 5 overall as they usually do during the morning race of all the Amateur racers on the GNCC circuit. Scott Kilby finished an amazing 1st overall on his Kawasaki & 1st in his class of Utility Modified. John Wright, mounted on his Honda 400EX, from the 4-stroke stock class raced his way to 2nd overall & Doug Henke, Utility Unlimited class, placed 3rd overall on his Honda. Trevor Rockwell from the Utility Modified class & Darrell Thomas from the Utility Stock class rounded out the top 5. Kilby had the lead in his class the entire 3-lap race. Wright battled early on with Adam Howell, Ty Huth & Kevin Wise, however, by the 2nd lap, he claimed the lead & never looked back. Howell's brother, William, competed in the Utility Unlimited class and gave Henke a run for his money - even leading mid-race, however Henke pulled it out in the end beating Howell by almost 3 minutes. Thomas back from being down 1 1/2 minutes behind on the first lap to winning by over 2 minutes in his class. Finally, where were the Women who so often place on the podium? Stephanie Parton took the early overall lead in the beginning of the race with Traci Cecco in 2nd. On the 2nd lap, the bottlenecks slowed them up. They actually sat & talked while waiting for one to clear up. That's when the 4-stroke stock & utility leaders caught them. On the last lap, Parton & Cecco swapped the Women's class lead 5 - 6 times, however, Troy Racing/LRD backed Parton fell back due to water & electrical problems. Team Alba's Cecco, took the win & 8th overall. Parton finished 2nd while Angel Atwell, Nicole Pennycook & Heidi Landon rounded out the top 5.
As the race started, it was pouring down rain. The first line of Pro & Pro Production racers took off. Yoshimura/Roll/ Nac's/IMS-backed Pro Production racer William Yokely grabbed the holeshot aboard his LTZ400 Suzuki. Ballance grabbed the lead from him shortly after, however, HMF's Johnny Gallagher soon passed him to claim the lead for himself. Gallagher looked amazingly fast on his LTZ400, however he had to pull off during the 2nd lap due to vision problems. Due to all the mud on the course, many racers needed to pull of their goggles before making it to the pits including Gallagher. This caused his cornia to get a scratch on it & he had to wear a patch for a couple of days. Every lap, most racers pulled in for a change of goggles & many changed gloves too as they couldn't hold on to the handle bars or twist the throttle any more. Here's a Pro tip for some of you amatuers.... Put zip ties on your twist throttles & wipe your muddy gloves on trees as you pass them.
Local Racer Finishes:
Ballance reclaimed the lead & held onto it for the remainder of the race having a tough battle with DuVall. Bottlenecks were a problem on this course too. "At one point in the race, Bill & I just sat there & talked for about 5 minutes" stated DuVall while waiting for a bottleneck to clear up. Eventually they got out though. Perhaps, this bottleneck is what gave Pro Production racer Steve Holbert a chance to make up some time on them. Holbert started in the 2nd row of the Pro/ Pro Production classes & used his time difference to move up to 3rd overall. "On the 2nd lap, I got into a huge bottleneck & got out first. I think I made up my time there" stated Holbert who raced on his Polaris Predator.
Pro Production: 6. Mike Krachun
At the finish, Ballance claimed his 6th win with DuVall finishing 2nd. Joe Kish ended up with 3rd after deducting the time difference of his class start. Holbert 4th & 4-stroke A rider Jeff Stoess finished 5th overall. Morning Race Action: The racers we usually expect on the podium, didn't end up there today due to the extremely muddy, slick & unpredictable track conditions. Neither Adam Howell from the 4-stroke Stock class nor Stephanie Parton or Traci Cecco from the

Motocross Points FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Q: What's the difference between Advancement points and Class Championship points?
A: Advancement points for 2003 will be kept for all riders
finishing in the top ten at any D6 scheduled race points event. Advancement points are points earned in a class. Example: if you run more than one class (125"B", 250"B") the points earned from 125"B" and 250"B" will be kept separate-
ly. "B" to "A" advancement: 100 points are required to advance to "A". When a rider has accumulated 100 points in either class, that rider will be moved to the "A" class at the end of the year. If a rider so chooses, he may have those two classes added together at any time during the year and request advancement from the points keeper. "C" to "B" advancement: 50 points are required to
advance to "B". When a rider has accumulated 50 points in either class, they will be moved to the "B" class at the end of the year. If a rider so chooses, he may have those two classes added together and request advancement from the points keeper. There are no advancement points for youth riders.
A:
Class Championship points are kept from each of the pre-determined classes at every race of the 18 points paying events. These points are kept separately. These points determine who the District 6 Class Champion will be at the end of the season.Points are earned by competing as a District Six member at the events listed in the D6 "Schedule of Motorcycle Events" booklet. You'll get the booklet when you apply for your number. Class Championship points will only be awarded to members with a current D6 card.
Q: What races count and how are the points allotted? A: All events count toward advancement but only the predetermined 18
class championship races will count toward the end of year D6 Class Championship awards. All events are printed in the "District Six Schedule of Events" booklet. You receive your advancement & class points relative to your finish and the number of riders in your class. 10 riders or more: 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Example: 22 riders, 3rd place get 8 pts.9 riders: 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.8 riders or less: First place will get points equal to the number of riders entered, reducing in increments of one point thru last place. Example: with 5 riders 1st place will get 5 pts., last rider will get 1 pt. ( 5-4-3-2-1 ).
Q: Do the Loretta Lynn qualifiers and final count toward D6 points? A: Yes. The Area, Regional and Finals will be added to D6 points if these
races were on dates that conflict with with a D6 scheduled points race. You will need to let the points keeper know prior to Sep 1st, the date, location, # riders in the class and your overall finish.
Q: How many points do I need to advance in class? A: "B", "Vet B" and "4W" riders may advance when they have accumulated
100 points. "C" and "Vet C" riders need only 50 points for advancement to "B". Keep in mind that riders may advance when they have the required points, but it is not compulsory until the end of the season.
Q: If I don't have enough points to advance by the end of the year, do my points go back to zero? A: No. Points are cumulative from the two previous seasons. Example: If
your 2001 and 2002 points total 100 points or more you will advance to "A" for the 2003 season. The current points season runs from Dec 1st, 2001 thru Nov 30th, 2002.
Q: "I clicked on the Points Page but it doesn't look like the most recent results. What do I do? A: When the pages are updated you may have to refresh the page. Here's

JUNE OFFROAD RACING – Story and Photographs By Mike Soudas
On the 1st mother nature continued to rain and it was not different at Rausch Creek. A wet and slick course awaited the riders. 29 youth riders raced with Alex Shaw edging out Brian Hoess by seconds for the Overall and the 12-15 85cc win, other youth winners included David Rhine, Jeremy Nease, Josh Weikel, Ian Pannebakker, Charles Thomas, Joel Chapman and Ian Quire. The Main Event had 43 riders that endured the poor conditions. Class winners Chris Evitts took the A open win and the Overall, Goerge Romeo Jr took the A200 win and 2nd overall. Other winners included Wayne Grenewich, Craig Shenigo, Broc Jennings, Brian Carpenter, Adam Wilson, Nick Simpson, Frank Evitts, James Iron, Scott Wolfersberger and Rick Wychunas. May31/June1 was also the John Penton GNCC in Ohio. Mudd and slop was a understatement. This track was known for its dusty conditions but this year the rain held down the dust. A few local riders braved the conditions. In the youth ranks Ryan McGaha took a 3rd place in the Mini Senior class. Ryan had the lead during the first lap but he got misdirected to the wrong trail causing him to loose valuable time. In the Mini Int. class Soudas (7th), Rehatchek (9th) and Shea suffered from the same course misdirection but all managed to finish respectively. In the main event local 250A rider Ryan Rogers had trouble in the mud while Senior A rider Brian Desimone managed a good finish. Racing Action at FOM #55 Soudas on his way to the 125B class win. On the 8th the rain continued until race time at the Foot of the Mountain, this was a District 6 and 7 event. Youth riders of the day rode the grass track sections while the Main Event was on a shortened 3.5 mile course. It was wet and slick plus the short course eroded quickly. Youth winners of the day were Tucker Covault, Kevin Pannabakker, Landon Wolfe, Tyler Klinger, Zach Smith, Joe Finney, Jeremy Nease and Kenton Neinbaugh. Main event winners were Paul Dotey, Tom Phillips, Hugh Mallick, Will Jenkins, Mikey Soudas, Bob Cawser, Jason Marcowicz, Tom Chapin, Wayne Grenwicz, Steve Green, Jedidiah Haines and Mike Strause. June 15th was another PA series race at Traxx sponsored by BP productions. It was a great sun shining day for racing. No dust and moderate mud. The youth ran a short course that included the MX track. The Main event
rode a 6.5 + mile course with 2 ski slope sections. Tim Rizzon took top honors in the youth class. Some winners of the main event included, Scott Wolfersberger, Mikey Soudas, Billy King, Adam Wilson, Dan Murray, Ed Guerrini, Alfred Huesenback, Matt Hunter and Ron Shaw. Also on this Pa Series Weekend was another round of the GNCC. This was at a new track in Virginia. This was a nice weekend that started but ended with a very muddy track once again. In youth action New Jersey's Ryan McGaha took the overall this is his 3rd overall win this year. Jerod Stoner took 1st in the Mini Int. class that was good for a 4th place overall finish. Eric Rogers (11) and Len Rehatchek III (12) had fine finishes also. In the Main Event New Jersey riders also did well with Pro Mike Lafferty taking second and Kevin Bennet taking a 4th in the 200A. Ryan Rogers finished 6th in the 250A class while his dad Keith Rogers finished second in the Senior A class and Brian Desimone took 5th place in the Senior A class. June 22 was another record rain fall weekend that postponed the racing at the BMER in Plymouth, Pa. The river had risen cover most of the track by Saturday evening leaving the club no choice but to postpone the event. The event will be held July 13th. One offroad event that was held was up north at NETRA, the Dam Good Junior Enduro on the 21st and Harescramble on the 22th. Local District 6 and ECEA rider Mikey Soudas ventured to Connecticut. The Junior Enduro was a 36 mile race that consisted of all types of terrain normally found at any eastern enduro. Over 100 youth riders, under 18 years old showed up to ride this event. Class for this event range from Junior A & B (Full size bike), Big Wheel, Mini A& B and Women. Junior A High Point and the Overall was taken by Alden Clark with the best Emergency check. There was a 3 way point tie of 14. Alden is one of New Englands rising stars, he also finished 11th overall in the GNCC AM race at Rausch. Mikey Soudas had a great day by winning the Big Wheel Hi Point from local regular Armand Menard with a 29 to Armands 30. Soudas was also 10th Overall. The Haresramble was run but with a shortened course due to heavy rain and flooding.
