Hello Race Fans!
Happy Independence Day everyone. Picnics, fireworks and long race weekends are just a few of the many things that make this country the greatest place in the world to live. Please do MRA a favor, if you see a soldier or if you know a veteran - thank them for their service. And please support our troops abroad, no matter what your political views are, they're there for your freedoms. Well we're about halfway thru the race season and I've been wondering lately what everybody thinks of the content found in MRA? I'm curious if people enjoy the way we do things? I wonder if people read the stories and like the pictures. But most of all I'm curious if you do business with the advertisers in MRA? I know you visit the tracks, but I'm curious if you visit the dealerships and performance shops that advertise in the pages of MRA? I'm curious if you take advantage of the money saving offers and coupons occasionally found here? I know it's not my business to tell you where to do your business. That's the greatest thing about being an American - it's the right we have to choose. To choose where we live and the activities we participate in, to choose our clothes and our hairstyles, to choose where we get the goods and services that fit our lifestyles. To choose - whatever ! Please remember that the advertisers in this publication are here because they chose to be. They chose to support the sport that you all know and love. Please remember when you need parts or service, or when you want to go practice or go race for the day, please choose to support the shops and tracks that choose to support our sport. If you can do me one more favor? If you chose to read this column this month, please send us an email or a note and let us know what you think of MRA. It's the only way we can properly choose what to print in these pages. Until next month !!

Youngest rider ever to receive the prestigious award, we think. ATV Racer Colin Bolden will be starting kindergarten this fall. While most of his classmates will be learning how to spell their names, Colin will be explaining to them exactly what a holeshot is. Colin may also hold another record for this designation - most holeshots in a year. By mid June he has pulled 14 holeshots and has 3 Overall wins. Colin has also won his first 5 foot trophy in June and is leading the track points at the Flying Dutchmen. Not bad for what we believe is also our shortest Holeshot Hotshot to date. Lets face it, you weren't very tall when you were starting kindergarten either. Colin, way to go buddy and keep up the great work. You have a big heart and you certainly are a Holeshot Hotshot. Watch out next month, you just may be the next MRA Hotshot. Jim Bull, MRA

MRA would like to feature Maddog Medeiros from Freehold, NJ. We first bumped into the Maddog at the Valley Forge Trail Riders Hare Scramble in May of this year. Maddog is an accomplished BMX racer who has been riding his dirtbike for years. This season he is attacking the ECEA Hare Scramble Series in a big way. Mike has won four out of the five rounds he has raced in and placed third in the other. Potential sponsors check this racer out. I'm sure in the years to come he could be a worthwhile investment. MRA would like to wish Mike the best of luck for the rest of the series. Watch out next month, you just might

AMA Chevrolet Motocross Championship Round #2 – Mt. Morris, PA May 30, 2004
By Jim Bull
Bubba'a the
Twenty Four year old Ricky Carmichael copped his 98th career victory (Supercross and Motocross comMan-still. Can bined) at Round #2 of the AMA Chevrolet Motocross Championship at High Point Raceway in Mt. Morris, PA over the anybody catch Memorial Day weekend in front of nearly 20,000 fans. this guy? Before I go any further with this report, I'd like to thank a few people for making it possible. First I'd like to commend ESPN II for their on going TV coverage of the outdoor National Series; I don't get to cover too many races from the comfort of my lazy boy. Next I would like to thank Pat Schutte with OMS Sports for allowing our MRA photographer Allen Gavlak access to the National events. And last but not least, Allen for getting out there and catching the action. In moto #1 of the 250 race, R.C. pulled the holeshot followed by Reed and Vuillemin on their 4 stroke Yamahas. Carmichael took a soft crash early in the race and Reed powered by, Ricky was able to remount still in second and take chase. This guy truly is something else, within a half lap Carmichael caught and passed this years Supercross champion with little difficulty and raced to the win. Carmichaels team mate Kevin Windham finished second with Reed and Vuillemin grabbing the third and forth place postions. In the second moto Windham got the holeshot followed by Carmichael, Heath Voss, then Reed and Vuillemin. The two Honda riders pulled away from the rest of the pack with Carmichael following Windham for most of the race. Carmichael waited for the right moment to put his move on K-Dub and built up a substantial lead on his way to victory. Is there another perfect season in Ricky's bag of tricks? Stayed tuned, it's going to be interesting. As exciting as the 250 race always is, this years crowd was on hand to see local PA native turned Suzuki Factory rider Broc Hepler. High Point is Heplers home track and the local's were out in huge numbers to support their District 5 hero. Broc, donned in Shoei Pittsburgh Kevin Windham put in a strong second his Steeler replica helplace finish at Mt. Morris. met gave his fans a Ricky Carmichael thrill and pulled the wins again-can he hole shot in the first 125 moto. The crowd went wild as Hepler was leading Stewart and the rest of the pack around the High Point course. Stewart got pull another perfect quickly by and started to pull away, leaving Hepler and Kawasaki racer Matt season out of his hat Walker to battle for second, with Sorby, Ramsey, and Lamson fighting for the for Honda? forth spot. Team green rider Ryan Sipes from Kentucky was putting in an impressive ride in sixth place in his first pro outing. In the end it was Bubba Stewart taking his first moto win ever at Mt. Morris with Hepler edging out Walker for second. Mike Brown and Ryan Hughes rounded out the top five. In moto #2 it was Stewart with the holeshot followed by Sorby, Tedesco, and Walker. Hepler got a bad start back in the sixth position but by the third turn had motored his way into second place behind Stewart. Bubba would Chad Reed Piloted again run away with the race showing the world he is the man to beat, with the Big Yamaha 4 Hepler running a solid second in front of the home town crowd. All Star National-Warm Up Doublin Gap MX Park - June 5, 2004
Every year the Yentzer Family hosts the Yamaha All Star Amateur National at their facility in Newburg, PA. Every year they hold a Friday practice and Saturday warm up race if you will prior to the National Event on Sunday. This year the crowds of riders from all over the eastern seaboard started arriving on Friday afternoon for an evening of practice. Many riders enjoyed the extra track time, especially those qualified for the Loretta Lynns Amateur Regional being held here later in the month. By the time the riders started packing up for the day and getting ready for a night of camping the skies opened up and the rains began to fall. Most stayed to see what the following day would bring, looking forward to the 2 full days of racing that lie ahead. The rains fell all night and well into the next day, an inch and a half until it was all done on Saturday afternoon. Some stayed, some didn't, some took advantage of the day to catch up on bike maintenance or family time. Others waited, hoping the Yentzers would not cancel the race. The rain stopped around 1:30 Saturday afternoon and Rod and Jeff Yentzer along with their crew hit the track with the heavy equipment provided by Chris Kinsley of Kinsley Construction in York, PA. By 2:30 practice had started and by around 7:30 that night the final motos were done and the 200 die hard racers that had the faith were cleaning their bikes and talking about how great the day had turned out and how did that track ever get so good after all that rain. For those of you that missed it - sorry, it was an awesome day of racing. Congratulations to all the racers that toughed it up and went for it. Racing or riding in the heat takes more energy. Here are seven easy tips to help prevent the sun and heat from getting the best of you. #1 Hydration (the most important) Who hasn’t heard “Drink eight 8-oz glasses of water a day.”? That’s a start but if you are racing and training hard you need more. The more you weigh, the more water you need. Your body uses up a lot more than that 64 ounces on a hot-humid day. To continue feeling good you need to replace it. Try to shoot for a gallon a day. I know that you are thinking the port-a-potties are not close enough to where you pit, but it will really help you recover through out the whole day. Sports drinks are ok but watch out for the high sugar contents. Water is still your best hydrator. To see if you are getting enough water check the color of your urine, it should be clear or pale yellow. #2 Eye protection There are so many goggle companies that are all making really good products. You have so many choices so try to find a pair of goggles that fits well and provides a mirrored or polarized lens. This will help to keep the bright sun out of your eyes and reduce the glare on the track. Remember to wear sunglasses while you are cruising the pits, this relieves your eyes from the sun. #3 Head Protection We all know we have to wear helmets so try to stay cool by wearing a vented one. There are many good helmet manufacturers with a variety of options and a wide range of prices. If price isn’t a factor, from what I’ve been reading, Troy Lee is the best out there on the market. Again, while cruising the pits keep you head protected. Wear your favorite companies logo on a baseball cap. #4 Stay Out of the Sun This is a hard thing to do on race day. The more the sun is beating down on you, the faster it will sap you of your energy. The best thing to do while you are not riding is retreat to your motor home and stretch out on the bed in the A/C. Oh that’s right, most of us aren’t factory riders. So, make sure that your chair is out of the sun. Use the shade from your truck or better yet get yourself one of those pop-up canopies. The canopy allows you to get a breeze from all sides (if there is any cooler air moving). Try to avoid a lot of walking around and standing in the sun. #5 Wear Light-colored Clothing Again, like the helmets, you have so many choices of manufacturers. Find the company that suits your style and fits you best. The vented pants and jerseys provide protection and coolness. Try to avoid the dark colors. If your back in black the sun will bake you like a raisin. The lighter colors will help to reflect the sun instead of sucking it up. #6 Avoid Training in the Middle of the Day (or after work) Try to get out early in the morning for your daily training run or bike ride. The morning air is still cool from the night and the humidity is generally lower. As the sun gets higher the day gets hotter. So if you can get your butt out of bed, get out the door and beat the heat it will also jump-start your day. By completing your workout in the morning it frees up your afternoon. You can relax at the end of the day instead of rushing around after work. #7 Rest and Relax Cool down with some simple stretches. You may be hot and tired after racing and training but there is no better time. Take a few minutes to stretch while your muscles are loose from the heat. It helps you relax and cools you down at the same time. Remember to get plenty of sleep during the week and before race day. Your body is running on the sleep it gets two or three days before the event not just the night before. If you are aware of these factors and follow these basic tips you will ride safer and feel better through the summer heat. Hope to see you at the races. – Bob Schuler, Total Two Wheel Training

Reactive Suspension By Al Carr & Andy Fleck
www.reactive-suspension.com One of the most frustrating failures that a racer encounters is leaky fork seals. They always seem to go at the most inopportune time, usually the weekend. If you’re just going practicing it might be a light weeping but if you’ve got a race it’ll be coming out faster than Martha Stewart unloading Enron stock and it will invariably be the brake side leg so that the fork oil can get all over your brake pads adding insult to injury. But, If it weren’t for leaky seals some people might never get their suspension fluid changed. I know I’ve harped on this many times before but it is my mission in lfe to educate all riders to the necessity of maintaining their suspensions. The majority of racers don’t give their suspensions a second thought until they start to leak. Suspension fluid breaks down just like engine oil and gearbox oil and to maintain best performance and minimize wear they should be serviced at regular intervals. Unlike fork seals a shock seal can have a very long service life. The shock seal is better protected from the elements than a fork seal and has a significant amount of pressure behind it to help it fit tight on the shock shaft. Fork seals on the other hand have a wiper as their only line of defense. Fork seals will fail for any number of reasons, damage to the chrome fork tube from either an impact with flying debris or a first turn collision will cause instant failure as the damaged section of tube will simply tear up the seal as it passes through it. Usually replacement of the tube and seal will be required in this scenario. The most common reason for leaking seals is dirt. As I said before the fork seals only line of defense is the wiper and it can only be expected to do so much. In an effort to supply us with the best performing suspension the factories spec fork seals with as little drag as possible to eliminate “stiction” the drawback to this is that the wipers can’t always handle whats thrown at them. During the course of a race when mud and water might collect on a fork tube the wipers can do a fairly good job of scraping the fork tube clean but if the mud is allowed to dry on the fork tube then the next time the fork compresses some of that dirt will get passed the wiper and begin to compromise the seal. I suggest to all my customers that each time before you go out to ride take a dry rag and wipe off your fork tubes as even water spots can and will over time contribute to seal failure. Another reason for seal failure and I’ve lived this one is using the wrong fork oil. Whereas there are many suspension fluids that can and should be used in forks and shocks, i.e. Silkolene RSF and Race Tech US1 there are some that are specifically designed for shocks only and should never be used in forks, at the top of this list is Bel Ray HVI. Some dealers have mistakenly sold this as a fork oil and I had the good luck to have a customer show up at my shop with both fork legs leaking like I’d never seen before. This experience let me find out first hand just what this stuff can do to fork seals. Bel Ray HVI appears to attack the make up of the rubber in the seal causing it to break up, it is easily identifiable. To rectify the problem and avoid it happening again the forks must be completely disassembled and every part thouroughly washed removing all traces of the oil. When used as intended as a shock oil Bel Ray HVI is among the best but it should be avoided in forks at all costs. One last tid bit I would like to pass along is that when you are performing your week to week maintenance and you have the bike torn down for cleaning and inspection, with the fork legs off the bike loosen the fork caps

and completely unscrew them from the upper tube. While holding the fork cap let go of the upper tube, if it slides down to the bottom of the leg quickly then chances are your fork seals are starting to go. It has been my experience that while the seals are sound they have enough grip on the chrome tube to support the weight of the upper tube. But as they begin to fail oil will begin to collect between the seal lips making them slip very easily. The tools required to change fork seals are specialized but absolutely required to do the job right. On KYB forks in addition to some standard wrenches you will need a cartridge holding tool a 14mm allen wrench a seal driver of the appropriate size and an oil level setting tool. On Showa Twin Chamber you will need the special fork cap wrench a 21mm socket a seal driver of the appropriate size a cartridge rod retaining plate and a graduated beaker. For all types of forks you will also require a shop manual that outlines the procedure step by step. If you decide to tackle the job yourself pick up the inner and outer fork bushings when you get the seals it will save you a second trip to the dealer when you tear them up taking the forks apart. MRA caught up with Brandon Brown and Cody Trout at the ATCO MX Park in early June. Cody and Brandon are buddies that hang out together at the races while off the track and cheer each other on while on the track competing. Both are having excellent seasons in their respective classes and both are deserving of Hotshot status. Both have pulled many hotshots this year and both have several wins and top 3 finishes as well. Cody is a year older than Brandon but I personally am looking forward to the day when they may both be in the same division, what a race that'll be. Until then we'll have to cheer them on as things are. Congratulations to both of you and the best of luck in the remaining season. Jim Bull - MRA
