Motorcycle Racing Action

Hello Race Fans Happy Fourth of July, everybody. Well, it seems we’re out of the monsoon season and into the tropical weather. The summer has just begun, and already we’re 90 degrees and a thunderstorm every other day. I for one welcome the hot weather; however, I know it’s not for everyone. So we get to celebrate the birthday of our great country this month. We are now 235 years old in the great ole U.S. of A. I know there have been some struggles of late, but we will persevere; we are Americans, after all. Maybe I should have made the holiday a trivia question; I just wonder how many of our children really even know that’s why we go see fireworks on that great day. I was driving by a carnival sign the other day, and they were showcasing their fireworks display. Man, I remember when I was a kid the only time we got fireworks was the Fourth of July. These days you can probably catch them just about any week of the year during the summer. Again, we Americans, we over do everything. Whether you are planning on attending a race or not, please enjoy and celebrate the holiday r e s p o n s i b l y. There’s nothing like living to race another day. I believe there is an MDRA 6 round that weekend at Evansville and, of c o u r s e , the Barbara Fritchie Classic at the Frederick Fairgrounds. Please check our upcoming

events section here in the paper. Things seem to be leveling off as we begin to move into the second half of the season. Some races have been good and others not so good. It seems the new magic number to hit is 350, and you have a “good turnout.” I’m still hearing the discussions on all the causes and on what we should do with class structures and payouts. It just seems to me that we are in another cycle. Since the beginning of time things rise and fall. Of course, actions along the way can be great determiners of outcomes; however, things always seem to come back around. I recommend if you are a racer and love the sport to keep on racing. Find the tracks or series you like the most and support them. Then encourage the people around you to do the same. Try to support the local businesses rather than buying out of the area, and if we all pull together, things will be just fine. As always, we appreciate you reading our paper. Please solicit the tracks and advertisers in our pages, and we hope to see you at an event real soon. If you feel there is something we can do better, please let us know. You can contact us through our website contact page, and while you’re there please check out all of the p hoto gr a p he r s and business links. Enjoy the summer, and we’ll see you at the track. MDRA 7 at Rocket Raceway nd 2 Annual Jack Carlton Memorial Race May 22, 2011 - By: Jim Bull – MRA I remember when I first met a 14-year-old Jack Carlton. I was at Rocket shooting a race back when they were a District 5 only track. There weren’t a lot of racers there that day, but it was really hot and it had probably been my second trip ever to the facility. I was down in the valley shooting the action, and this young man who was flagging says to me, “Hi Mr. Bull, how are you doing today?” Well, we got to talking, and I figured out who this polite kid was and a little bit about the history of the track. Turns out that Jack’s parents had turned this sweet piece of real estate into a motocross track so Jack could chase his dream. A little later in the day I saw someone else take Jack’s place as he headed off to get ready for his first moto. I think he had just moved up to the big bikes and was racing C class, and he did pretty well for himself that day. On my way home I thought to myself that he seemed like a nice kid. I wasn’t surprised because his parents, Mark and Shelly, had always rolled out the red carpet for me, and the riders seemed to like them too. Over the years Rocket has made some headway and found their way into District 6 and the MDRA Series. They had always sat right on the border of the two districts, but in late 2010 when the AMA juggled the lines a bit they found themselves on our side of the state. Hence, the first ever MDRA race at Rocket Raceway, plus the fact that the Yentzers had seen the changes over the years and are always on the lookout for new facilities to bring into the mix. Let’s get back to Jack a minute. I haven’t spent a lot of time at Rocket over the years, but every time I went Jack was there and totally into running the races. I had talked to him occasionally on the phone over the years when I called to talk to his parents, and I really thought he was a standup guy. Unfortunately for all of us, about two years ago we lost Jack as a young man in a tragic car accident. His life was cut way too short, and he left behind a very young son. Sometimes we don’t understand why things happen when they do, but I’m sure there was a reason for Jack’s passing. I’d like to thank Mark and Shelly for carrying on the tradition and keeping Rocket alive. I know Jack would have wanted it that way. Please check the results here to see how your favorite racer fared on the day, and be sure to put Rocket’s upcoming events in your schedule. You can find them on the web at www.RocketRaceway.com, and be sure to be back for their Allegheny Cup Race in September and their MDRA event in October.

D7 Gold at Tomahawk MX Corbin Takes Tomahawk Twice May 29, 2011 • By Tim Rader The fourth round of AMA District 7’s Gold Series attracted just over 200 entries to Tomahawk MX Park on Memorial Day Weekend. This event also was a District 5 Double Points Day. Promoter Chad Gochenour and his crew had the track in great shape on a sunny, warm and beautiful day for motocross. Daniel Corbin swept the 250 A class over Andrew Benson; both were on Yamahas. In the Open A class, Benson and Corbin swapped moto wins, with Corbin nabbing the overall. Kawasaki jockey T.J. Fifty girls attended this year’s school – a new record.

This year was our biggest yet. We had 50 girls attend our annual school at the Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club in Hanover, PA. I’d like to thank all of our sponsors; without them the school would be impossible to do: Moto Tech, Dragon Goggles, Racer X, Motorex, Appalachian Harley Davidson, Dirt Boy Designs, Sheetz, Renthal, Pit Posse, Tucker Rocky, Vortex, Matrix Concepts, DT1 Filters, Scott Goggles, RK Chain, Acerbis, Lock Straps, RPM Graphics, Liquid Performance, XS Energy Drink, Motogemz, Stultz clothing, and EVS. I would also like to add a special thank-you to those who help make Girls Just Wanna Ride more possible: Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club, Smoke and Sharon Fisher, Mr. and Mrs. Cree, Willy Toth, Amber Hughes, Bruce Lally, Cody Lunceford, Tonya Mantsch, Ashley Buffington, Greeny, Nate and Renee Green, and, of course, my Mom and Dad (Chuck and Linda)! Also, of course, all of the girls that came out and attended the school. See you next year!

Girls of all ages attend the school for basic motocross instruction.

Kelsey Green and Miss Motorama Tonya Mantsch talk with the girls during a break.

JULY 2011

Mid-pack action with Byron Shock and Christopher Knight running seventh and eighth.

GPMX’s Greg Pamart rides to first overall in Vet A.

Kevin Kolb (5) shadows Michael Shaud (222) to go on to a first overall in Plus 25 B/C.

MDRA 6 at Sleepy Hollow May 28 - 29, 2011 • By: John Sherer Round # 5 of the MDRA Series showed up at Sleepy Hollow over the Memorial Day holiday. Saturday’s practice sessions were run under sunny skies with warm temperatures. The racing surface was in mint condition until, yes, rain. Ten minutes of heavy showers drenched the track, changing anyone’s mind about going out for a few hot laps. On Sunday morning the groomers mounted up and took to the track. After some extra raking and blade work with the bulldozers, the riders hit the track about an hour and a half later than normal. The delay didn’t bother most of the riders, which numbered around 300. They were thankful for the transition into a good pliable racing surface. All classes were treated to some of the best riders in the MDRA Series and District 6 area. The action started early with the Open A charging into the first turn. Front runners Chad Aughinbaugh, Jeremy Cook, Kyle Sidle and Greg Pamart were giving each other no quarter. By the second turn Cook had moved into the lead and never looked back. The pack hounded him, but he never wavered and took the win. Cook won both motos, taking first place overall with Greg Pamart and Dakato Yohe second and third. The Plus 25 riders were not to be outdone, with Kevin Kolb, Steven Hoffman and Michael Shaud mixing it up all afternoon. There were some tense moments between Kolb and Shaud as they shadowed each other around the track, and at the end of four laps Kolb rode to the victory. As the Vet C combatants hit turn one, Joe Schaufele dove in hard, grabbing the holeshot. Steve Bohlen put the pressure on but just couldn’t run Schaufele down. Bohlen took the checkered in second place, followed by Chris Talianek to round out the top 3. Plus 35 B/C once again left Kevin Kolb the man to beat. Although a great effort was put in by Joe Hegeman, who was charging hard to catch Kolb, he had to settle for a second overall on the day. Anthony Maladra and Mike Cepress pushed each other to the last lap, but Maladra went on to handle the Plus 45 class and finish first overall. Mike Reynolds would lead the Senior B/C class, riding smoothly to take the win. The action mid-pack was exciting, as Roy Craig and the Hammer Jeff Groff traded positions back and forth until Craig took command of the situation finishing in the top five. The Open B division was won by William Carling on the day. Byron Shock and Christopher Knight put on an aerial show in front of spectator row to the delight of the crowd. Byron ended the moto in 6th place and Knight in 8th. The women showed some good moves too. Taylor Stevey was out front, while Michelle Kastle and Aly Morey fought it out behind her. With the race season just coming into full swing, come out and witness some of the great racing action to be found in the MDRA Series. You will not be disappointed. See you at the track.

Rock Run Recreation was a first time host of a GNCC event. Round 7 of 13 found its way to Pennsylvania and the relatively new riding area, Rock Run Recreation. Rock Run started out with over 50 miles of trails for ATVs, UTVs, and Dirt Bikes back in 2007. With the help of the Yamaha Trails Initiative Program, they were able to add an additional 20 miles of trails. Rock Run now provides over 80 miles of trails that you can enjoy on whatever type of machine you like. Set in the rural parts of northern Cambria and southern Clearfield counties, the trails there provide spectacular views from atop the Allegheny Mountains. Riders can access Rock Run for a nominal fee, and they are open Wednesday through Sundays in the months of June through September and weekends in April, May and October (www.rockrunrecreation. com). This weekend’s event was co-sanctioned with our friends at AMA District 5 and the BP Promotions PA State Harescramble Series. Below see how the top racers from each race finished at today’s event, and you can log on to their respective websites at www.AMADistrict5.com or www.PaHSRacing. com for series standings. To check complete results and info on the 2011 GNCC Series, go to www.GNCCRacing.com. The series stays in the area with the next round in late June in Snowshow, WVa.

Spring Grove, PA’s LeeAnn Bange raced to a third in the Women’s class and an impressive seventh O/A.

There were just over 1,100 entries at the PA GNCC round.

Peters Top Gun at Thunder in the Sand

The Southern New Jersey resort town of Wildwood has hosted the Thunder in the Sand beach racing event for many years. During the year the wide sandy beach is open to beach goers who flock to this famous beach town for the miles of sandy beaches and world famous Boardwalk. Situated about 80 miles south of the other “Jersey Shore,” Wildwood’s family atmosphere is a great match for the racing crowd. Twice a year, the beach is turned into a temporary racetrack that is both tough and challenging to all levels of motorcycle and quad racers. With one moto in each class taking place each day, the relaxed atmosphere of the race day is casual, but the racing is intense. Classes are held for the youngest racer all the way up to the cream of the crop A class. More

than 750 quad and motocross racers showed up on this spring weekend ready to do battle. Open A class racing action began on Saturday with Jesse Festenstine grabbing the holeshot and the early lead. Local rider Charles Sherby was by Festenstine early and set off to run away from the field. Festenstine went down while running in second place, and the Yamaha duo of Joey Peters and Dakota Kessler both got by. While out front with a comfortable lead, Sherby washed out in a corner and went down. The battle for the lead was now between Peters and Kessler, with Peters holding the advantage. Kessler was all over Peters looking for a place to pass but couldn’t make it happen and had to settle for second. Sherby recovered for third place in the moto. Since racing is held on two separate days with payout per moto, local pro racer Frankie Lettieri made the trip down the Garden State Parkway looking for some cash. Lettieri’s trip was well worth it as he grabbed the holeshot in the second Open A moto and went on for a wire to wire victory. Keeping the Honda mounted Lettieri honest was first moto winner Peters. He was right on the back tire of Lettieri all moto long eating sand but could never make the pass. By the moto’s end it was Lettieri, Peters and Kessler, with Peters taking the overall followed by Kessler and Bryan Wallace.

Brandon Garlock (108) and Tyler Kirschner (244) led the start of the second Super Mini I qualifier at the NE Regional Youth qualifier at Broome-Tioga on June 11th.

Loretta Lynn Northeast Regional - Amateur National Youth Qualifier Broome-Tioga Sports Center • Binghamton, NY, June 11-12, 2011 • By Jim Sanderson Hurd Motorsports, promoters of the beautiful Broome-Tioga Sports Center, hosted the Northeast Regional Youth Qualifier on June 11th and 12th in Binghamton, New York. The last time Broome-Tioga hosted a Regional was 2006. Rider turnout was excellent! Many class divisions had nearly full gates or had to run qualifiers to reduce the field of competitors to 40 riders for the final two motos of the three moto format regional championship dictated by the series promoter, MX Sports. The weather forecast leading up to the weekend was predicting excellent spring weather, but it sure didn’t turn out that way! Saturday’s forecast had only a slight chance of thunderstorms and Sunday’s forecast was even better, predicting sunshine and temps in the lower 80s. Reality, however, was quite different! Saturday was humid, and the skies opened up late in the afternoon and wreaked havoc on the race program schedule. One 50cc class was run, but it proved so difficult for the little guys to navigate the racecourse that all remaining 50cc races were postponed until Sunday. Sunday dawned with light rain and very slick conditions, but the Broome-Tioga track crew did an unbelievable job of scraping the mud off and proceeded to provide a decent racecourse, all things considered. Track conditions improved considerably as the day progressed. Thirty riders loaded the gate for the first 85cc 9-11 Modified division’s first of three motos. Matthew Hale, Justin Beaudoin, Will Agnew and Frank Peneno led the pack out of the switch-back first turn. Hale continued to hold the point position after the leaders completed the difficult front rhythm section and was trailed by Agnew, Peneno, Connor Arsenault and Brock Papi. Papi set a blistering pace and began picking off riders and was even clearing the massive off-camber double on the back hill while no other riders even attempted the massive obstacle on the opening lap. Papi passed two riders on the massive jump to move from fifth to third, and then passed Agnew to secure second. Agnew, Peneno and Shane

Desell were relegated to third through fifth, respectively. Papi reeled in Hale and made the pass for the lead in the front rhythm section on lap two. Papi immediately began to gap Hale by three seconds and increased the gap to four seconds by the start of lap three. Papi continued to extend his lead, starting lap four with a seven second advantage that increased to 11 seconds by the last lap. Papi backed off slightly on the last lap but still took the checkers and the win with a ten second lead. Hale, Jake Beaudoin, Desell and Agnew completed the top five. Cameron Minton, Jake Beaudoin, Agnew and Hale led the start of the second 85cc 9-11 Modified division moto. When the leaders emerged from the front section, Minton and Beaudoin continued to run one and two. Christopher Venditti, Peneno and Justin Beaudoin rounded out the top five. Papi, winner of the opening moto, was nowhere to be seen on the racecourse for the second moto and was scored as a DNS. Jake Beaudoin began closing on Minton and made the pass for the lead on the massive Broome-Tioga downhill ski jump. Minton was relegated to second. Beaudoin pulled away, starting lap two with a 5 second advantage. One lap later, Beaudoin’s lead had increased to 12 seconds and just kept on increasing. Beaudoin took the win with a plus 30-second lead. Connor Arsenault, Hale, Peneno and Desell followed. Beaudoin, Hale, Minton, Walter Benitez and TJ Albright led the pack out of the first turn in the final 85cc 9-11 Modified moto. At the start of lap two, the top five remained unchanged. Benitez caught and passed Minton in the front section, taking third. Minton was relegated to fourth, and Albright remained fifth. The top five remained completely unchanged for the next two laps, and Beaudoin came around to take the white flag with a 12 second lead. It looked like Beaudoin had a second win in the bag that would also give him the overall with a 3-1-1 but it wasn’t to be. Beaudoin either crashed or had mechanical problems and when the leaders emerged from the front,

Hale had inherited the lead and the overall division championship. Benitez, Minton, Albright and Chris Venditti closed out the top five. Hale topped the 85cc 9-11 Modified podium with a final tally of 2-3-1. Peneno (7-4-6) took second, and Desell (4-5-10) took third. Forty-two riders signed up to race the Super Mini I 12-15 class. In order to reduce the field to 40 riders for the final two motos, two four-lap qualifiers were run. Evan Richard won the first qualifier and was followed by Zach Putman, Mike Carleton, Jonathan Baker and Miguel Correia. Tyler Kirschner won the second qualifier with a three second lead over Brandon Garlock. Ben Francis Nathaniel Page and Oak Welch rounded out the top five. Connor Ference, Welch, and Spencer Dendler led the full gate of 40 riders out of the first turn in the second Super Mini I moto. Ference and Welch continued to lead after clearing the difficult front section, with Carleton, Tyler Kirschner and Dendler in tow. Welch and Carleton passed Ference taking first and second in the front rhythm section on lap three. Ference was relegated to third. Welch pulled away and took the win with a four second advantage. Carleton, Ference, Kirschner and Nathaniel Page completed the top five. Page, Carleton, Joshua Lee, Richard and Schae Thomas led the start of the final Super Mini 1 12-15 moto. Page pulled away to start lap two with a two second lead. Page and Carleton were separated by two seconds and ran one and two for the entire moto, separated by no more than three seconds. Page held on to take the final moto win with a three second advantage. Carleton, Correia, Jeremy Smith and Richard followed. Carleton topped the Super Mini I 12-15 podium with a final tally of 3-2-2. Page took the runner-up tier with a 4-5-1 and Richard completed the rostrum with a 1-7-5 score. Please view complete event results at www.mxsports.com.

XC300

Possibly the best Offroad motorcycle on the planet with: • Superior handling • Two stroke engines strong, smooth power characteristics • Newly designed headlight shell and headlight • FMF Q-Stealth silencer • Marzocchi 45mm front fork • Ohlins 888 shock • Improved cooling system • Improved chain guide • Eye catching red frame and graphics

Jerod Stoner wins the overall at this year’s OxBo.

XC SIX DAYS 200

The Erzberg Rodeo winner - with its legendary traction, handling and great toughness - is now even better. Smaller plastics, factory-made fork rods, red anodised forks with larger diameter pistons, standard crash pad and meticulously worked engine and components. Another new feature is the die cast frame, which features a combination of cast and sectional parts. The XC’s superb design also makes it a winner at a glance.

WOW, nice event South Penn! The famed Foot of the Mountain venue that hosts many District 6 and 7 events was an eye opener for some and just an awesome course for others. This was the 2011 season’s first real rock banger, and there were a few rocks there, the soil was limited, LOL. The 50cc gang got to ride some of the smaller rocks in the grass track along with some small hills and off cambers, a nice challenge for the li’l tikes that did a great job. The Pee Wee and Youth riders got more of the real trail mixed with an afternoon shower, hats off to those boys and girls showing some great skills and riding. In the C and Main events some more trail was added but an early morning downpour made one hill trouble, so it was taken out early. The riders from down South got a good primer for the schedule’s upcoming runs at RORR, HMDR, GMER, VFTR, as the trails were short but proved to be just enough not to intimidate anyone. Thanks for a great weekend, as I know the landowner/host of the SPER event was pleased with the ECEA riders and support, and we as the ECEA thank them for a great weekend. Faith Greetings MRA readers, in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is that time again - to share the good news with all of you. This month I thought we could talk about the faith of a 5-year-old. I met a 5-year-old who was more faithful to God than most people I know. His name will come in a little bit.

First, let me tell his faith story and how God blessed him for being faithful in his tithing. The faithful 5-year-old had been praying and saving for an electric car. I was told it was something his little heart desired more than anything, well, maybe not more than anything in the world, but to a 5-year-old it was the world. He saved his money and prayed, but did he save all the money he had? No! He didn’t. See, he did not forget his provider God in his time of waiting; this little guy tithed to his local church and received a statement of giving equaling $6.00 for the year. Now, that may not seem a lot for most of us, but for him it was the same as the story of the widow in Mark12: 41-44: The Widow’s Offering, praised for giving. Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts. 42 Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins. 43 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, and this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. 44 For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.”

Noah Geyer #18 in the 50 class from the MAMA Race Series was allowed to see God at work in his life firsthand. Like the widow, Noah gave of his heart, and he was blessed for it. The electric car Noah was saving for happened to be a prize in a drawing at Blue Diamond the weekend of a MAMA race that Noah was attending there. It was just like the car Noah was saving for. Now Noah and his Grandfather, who are strong in their faith, could have prayed for the car for Noah, but being the good and faithful people they are, they prayed that God would bless the one who was deserving and needed it the most. The drawing went off, and God used this very moment to show a 5-year-old what he meant in Malachi when he told us to test him. Noah may have not needed it the most - we will never know that for sure S701828

- but God blessed him for a reason. Noah tested God as God told us to test him in Malachi, and Noah’s name was pulled from all the names that were entered. Noah was the proud recipient of an electric car provided to him by God. God allowed Noah to not only win a car but also keep the money he was saving to buy the car in the first place. Why? Because Noah was faithful to God in his giving, and God showed Noah his blessings for his faithfulness. Now is this by chance or a divine blessing from God? You make the call. Listen to Malachi 3:10: Tithe 10 percent! 10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” say the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test! I believe it was a divine blessing! This is the only time God says to test him, and it is in Tithing. God blesses those who bless his work and his people. Noah was blessing others in his tithing to the church, and in return the church was allowed to bless with the money received. God knows that his people need to be blessed and in the blessing they can bless others. For God gave all of us the blessings first in what we have, and he knows the hardest thing to do is give back to others, so that is why he challenges you on this very topic. He wants you to have faith and test him! I ask you this, if I was to give you a hundred dollars and ask of you only one condition, that you give back to me ten dollars, would you do it? Most definitely you would, and this is what God is saying to you. He provides all that you have and is asking that you only give back to him 10 percent of what is his. Now I will not tell you whom to give your tithes, only that you should pray and look at God’s work in the world, and God will help you find an organization that he is calling you to. Then when you find that group or organization, give what is God’s, give 10 percent to that organization, and God will bless you for it. It may not be a big check in the mail or it may be, but how about no vehicle repairs because you car does not break or yours shoes just do not wear out, or maybe you win an electric car. God blesses those who are faithful! May Christ peace be with you, and may God’s blessings pour out on you. Motocross For Christ, Racing Rev. Roy P.S. MDRA 7 at Happy Ramblers June 12, 2011 • By: Jim Bull – MRA What a weekend this was if you are a motocross racer from our region. There was a National at High Point, a Loretta Lynn Youth Regional at Broome – Tioga, this MDRA round at Happy, Pagoda had a Mainline race, and I believe Raceway Park even had an event. Too many choices, if you ask me. I’m not sure how the rest fared, but the MDRA faithful were here at Happy - just over 350 entries for the day. I was pleasantly surprised as I pulled into the lot. The weather even cooperated as temperatures dropped slightly, and the rain held for most of the day. The count made for decent racing, as many riders were here preparing for the Loretta Regional at High Point next week. Last year’s novice champion Sean Baxley was at Happy and looking ready for next weekend. Baxley’s been hurt but says he’s finally feeling ready and excited to get after it again. Other hopefuls include the father and son team of Ken and Kevin Messerman from Lewistown, PA. Ken took the weekend off and was here with his son Kevin, who took the Open C win on the day. Action Motorsports’ Mike Bear was getting ready too and nailed three second-place finishes on the day. All in all, it was a good weekend for all the activity out there. You can check the results here and be sure to check out all of the racing images online at the MRA website. Happy’s next event will be a MDRA 6 race on the weekend of July 23 – 24. See you then.
