Welcome again to another action packed issue of MRA. We truly appreciate your loyalty to our paper. I can only hope that as editors and publishers we're bringing you, our readers the coverage you want to see. Well, the Supercross season is in the books for another year, and yes, guess who?, Ricky's done it again, this kid is HOT,,, can anybody catch him? and did you watch the season opener of the Outdoor Series at Glen Helen last month? When the checkered flag dropped at the end of the second moto RC had a 37 second lead on the rest of the pack. Back at home here, we are getting into the groove of our racing season, the District 6 Points Series is well under way with 5 races in as of June the 2nd. (See Point standings in this issue). There are 11 events left in the series where you can earn factory contingencies as well as D-6 Bucks that are good towards free admission and sign up at all D-6 Moto Cross Tracks. Make sure you have a valid District Card to earn points at these events.

Well, I hope you enjoy this issue of MRA. I look forward to running into all of you at the races this season-and I'm talking in the 'pits' and not on the track. Speaking of out on the track, I'm curious if there would be any Dad's, Mom's, Ex-Racers, or just plain 'old people' like me out there that would have any interest in an MRA sponsored Adult Mini Bike Racing Series at some of the local tracks in the near future. Send me an e-mail or give me a call and let me know what you think and we'll see you at the races.

“Mother’s Day Gift” On Sunday, May 12th was the first time I took Keith racing, he races lots of Sundays, but due to his father’s vacation, Dan and I were more than mere “spectators”. Dan told Keith he ‘should win the race for mommy on Mommy’s day’. To make a long story short, he finished an overall second place! (the best he’s finished in this class yet.) Talk about a proud mommy on Mother’s Day! Alice Lengle, mother of Keith Lengle #22L, 6 years old; 50cc oil inj.

The Legend
SHIPPENSBURG, PA. MAY 5 By Len Breech
Do you remember when you swung your leg over that 2 wheeler for the 1st time, didn’t it feel great? How old were you when you got your 1st ride on a dirt bike? Better yet, what was the first dirtbike you ever rode? I’d be willing to bet, if your getting to be an old guy like me, it was probably a Honda Mini Trail 50 or 70. Now in today's high tech world of high horsepower mini’s, a dad has a ton of options when it comes time to get junior his first ride, what bike or bike’s are you going to look at? There are a ton of great choices, matter of fact you could probably get a great bike no matter what brand you buy. When it came time for me to get my son his first ride, I went back to my past. I remembered that old Honda 70 that was in our garage for years, everyone in the family rode it, it started every time you wanted to go for a ride, and boy do I wish I still had it. Honda has been building great mini cycles it seems like forever, the next time you have a need for a new mini bike in the family take a look at a XR 50 or a XR70. Chances are if it’s next week or another 30 years from now, those same great starter bikes will still be available from your local Honda Dealer. It's like dejavue all over again, your wife will probably just look at you and say, “That's definitely your boy or girl”, matter of fact - it just might get you all fired up and put that racing spirit back in your blood again. Hey, wouldn't it be great if all us old guys just started racing mini’s again? We need something to do between moto's any how, sounds like maybe some new classes forming at the racetrack real soon. Let me know what you think. Jim Bull, M.R.A.
A pair of infrequent competitors emerged from Baer Racing Products sponsored short track at Shippensburg Speedway with a pair of victories. Jake Johnson is chasing the Grand National Rookie of the Year award (and maybe a podium), made his first local start a winning one. The Moroney's H-D/Metro Racing.com sponsored rider put the Nort Racing Rotax into the winners circle in the Sportsman and 600 A final, finishing a straight in front of Shawn Baer both times. While Johnson would like to race every weekend, Larry Weiss' infrequent appearances are because at his age, it takes a while to recover. Weiss was handed the 40+ final when race long leader, Dave Smith, fell just before taking the white flag. In the Vintage class, wily veteran Weiss, riding his Triumph, gave a riding lesson to a pair of youngsters, Richard Pfanders and Michael Headman on their TT Yamahas. Shawn Baer emerged from the second turn at the start of the Sportsman final with the lead, over Johnson, Dillon Cava and Georgie Price. As they entered the first turn on the next lap, Johnson slipped under Baer for the lead and extended it to a straight by the end. Price took over third at the end of the first lap, and Chris Klinefelter started pounding on Price to try to get by in the latter half of the race, but to no avail. Johnson added some excitement to the 600 A final, by being sent to the penalty line despite his 'it wasn't me' protests. Georgie Price took advantage of the situation, taking the lead from Cava, Baer and Brian Phillips. But like a hot knife through butter, Johnson began slicing his way through the field, taking third behind Price and Baer by the end of the second lap. Baer did the unthinkable, and passed Price for the lead off the second turn on lap four. Johnson quickly followed suit, with Price dropping out two laps later. On the sixth lap, Johnson again slipped under Baer for the lead. Earlier, Baer looked like he was going to win the 250 A final on his Battlefield H-D/BRP sponsored Rotax as he quickly pulled out to a several length lead over Roy Miller, John Lewis and Chris Klinefelter. His lead evaporated when Lewis became the first of three riders who got a little too high off the fourth turn, crossed up, and got tossed to the ground. Lewis made the restart, but Miller put his Bromley's Suzuki/M & S Suzuki sponsored DRZ Suzuki into the lead entering the first turn off the restart with Baer, Brian Phillips and Damian Kocovinos behind. By the seventh lap, Chris Klinefelter had worked his way to third, several lengths behind Baer. Other winners were Kyle Schlimme both the 50 Oil Injected and 50 (4-6). with Tyler Haas taking the 50 (7-8) group. Bret Pugh finally managed to stay on two wheels in the 65 class here and came away with a hard fought win over Austin Greenland in the process. Brandon Robinson showed off his new leathers and also managed to stay upright to the finish to claim the 85 (7-11) class. Joey Parks took the 85 (12-15) group. Matthew Young took the 125 class, with Joshua Tyeryar winning the 250 B and Richard Pfanders topping the 600 B class Travis Sennett easily won the 500 2 Valve final, with Bob Sweeten easily grabbing the 30 + final. Shippensburg has added a "snow date" race on Sunday June 9 to replace their opening date that was snowed out in March.

“Amateur’s Abound” Loretta Lynn’s Amateur Area Qualifier BINGHAMTON, NY, APRIL 20-21, 2002 – By Jim P. Sanderson
Tom Hurd Motorsports, promoter for the Broome-Tioga Sports Center, hosted a Loretta Lynn’s Area Qualifier on the fast, technical Broome-Tioga racecourse. Some of the most talented racers on the east coast came out to try to qualify for the prestigious Loretta Lynn’s Amateur National Championships held during the first week of August in Tennessee. Of course, the top riders here must still qualify at a regional qualifier and finish top ten in order to reach the start gate at Hurricane Mills in Tennessee.
Stock classes ran their qualifiers on Saturday while modified classes ran theirs on Sunday. Some of the regular race day classes were run each day so there was a full program for the weekend. Mother Nature made the weekend interesting buy supplying a bit of rain early Saturday, making for some pretty slick track conditions for practice and some of the first moto’s of the days race program. The rain eventually ended and the track dried out rather quickly. On Sunday, the racecourse was in excellent form due to the extra effort of Broome-Tioga’s track staff. Chad Sharrow topped the podium of the highly competitive collegeboy class on Saturday with a 1-2 score. Joseph Beatty, rode to a consistent 3-3 for the runner-up spot while Josh Seguine rounded out the podium with a 2-5 tally.
Charlie Ellis ( 181) and Wally Silva battle for the lead in the 125 Expert Stock class at the Loretta Lynn’s Area Qualifier at the Broome-Tioga Sports Center on April 20th.
In the talent laden 65cc 7-9 class, Scott Seal topped the podium with his 1-3 score. Second overall went to Zach Butler via his 2-5 tally. Drew Torrance earned third overall with his 4-6 score. Veteran Pro/Expert rider Wally Silva topped the extremely competitive 125cc Pro Sport/ Expert class podium on Sunday with a perfect 1-1 score. Rounding out the podium were Mike Veracka with a 5-2 and Charlie Ellis with a 6-3.
Tony Peregrin (189) leads the 1st 65cc 7-9 class moto ahead of Jim Doolittle (60), Tom Sharkey (424) and Scott Seal at the Loretta Lynn’s Area Qualifier on Saturday, April 20th.
In the super fast Supermini class, Phil Nicoletti rode to a perfect 1-1 score for top honors while Kaven Benoit, who came all the way from Canada to qualify, earned runner-up honors with his 3-2 rides. Mike Gesso’s 2-6 rides were good enough to earn him the last tier of the Supermini podium. Seguine got out front quickly in the first collegeboy class with Dane Coon, Sharrow, Charlie Ellis (181) nails the holeshot in the 125 Pro Sport class at the Loretta Lynn’s Area Qualifier. Trailing were Wally Silva (78), Dave Ginolfi (461), Paul Veracka (96), Mike Dougherty (25) and Joseph Beatty (856).
Mark Wundarck (729) and Paul Veracka (96) battle for the lead in the super fast 250 Open Pro Sport class on Sunday at the Loretta Lynn’s Area Qualifier at the Broome-Tioga Sports Center.
Josh Beatty and Paul Dornellas in tow. Seguine had a six second lead by lap two. Sharrow moved up to second, Beatty third, Pat Simpson was now fourth and Coon dropped all the way back to fifth. Sharrow began to chip away at Sequine’s lead and reduced it to two and a half seconds by the last lap. The two battled for the last lap with Sharrow finally able to make a pass stick in the front supercross section. Sharrow got the first moto win ahead of Seguine, Beatty, Simpson and Coon. Beatty earned holeshot honors for the second collegeboy moto but when the leaders came of the supercross section the top five were Chad Charbonneau, Beatty, Sharrow, Matt Hibbard and Paul Bowlby. Charbonneau had and eight second lead by lap three. Sharrow was now up to second after passing Beatty, dropping Beatty to third. Karl Morin moved to fourth and Seguine was fifth. Charbonneau got the second moto win easily with a whooping 14 and a half second lead. Trailing were Sharrow, Beatty, Morin and Seguine. Tony Peregrin led the pack of 65cc 7-9 class out of the first turn in the first moto but then cross rutted in the slick conditions and went down, taking Jim Doolittle down in the process. This allowed Tom Sharkey to inherit the lead. Rounding out the top five were Alec Eccleston, Michael Rommel, Zach Butler and Ron Neilson. Sharkey fell victim to the slick conditions just before the start of lap two which gave the lead to Eccleston. Sharkey remounted second. Peregrin was back to third, Rommel was still fourth and Neilson held fifth. Peregrin went down again late in the moto when he tangled with a lapper. Seal was now out front, dropping Eccleston to second. Seal finished the moto with a 12-second lead ahead of Eccleston, Butler, Drew Torrance and Zach Rosch. Peregrin managed another holeshot in the second 65cc 7-9 class moto and led most of the moto until late in the race when Chaz light made the pass for the lead. Shortly after the pass, Light took a big header going up the back tree line straight giving the moto win to Peregrin. Rounding out the top

After winning his first race as an Expert the previous week at Trail-Way Speedway, Shawn Baer showed that he is a threat to win any time now with a victory over Don Mullen in the 600 A class. In what seems like a recurring theme during the early part of the mid-Atlantic flat track season, rain again threatened the races. Instead of during the race, this time it was before, as a quick heavy down pour caused the track to cancel part of their afternoon kart program. But after waiting a while, they managed to get the track in excellent shape for evening motorcycle program. Mullen was first off the second turn in the 600 A final with Ricky Winsett, Dillon Cava, Baer and Raun Wood right behind. By the end of the second lap, Baer had put his Battlefield Harley-Davidson/Baer Racing Products sponsored Rotax into second, with Wood third a lap later. With Mullen riding the inside line, Baer was right up on the edge of the groove gradually cutting into Mullen's lead. Wood followed in Baer's tire tracks, unable to gain any advantage on him. Baer took 250 A: 1. 88A Raun Wood 2. 56 Roy Miller 3. 21 John Lewis the lead down the back straight on the next to last lap, and once in the clear at the start of the last lap, he put several lengths on Mullen in the final lap. Wood also 4. 99S Chris Klinefelter closed on Mullen in the final lap, but couldn't get him. In the later Sportsman final, Wood was awake at the start, jumping into the lead over Phil Libhart, Winsett and Baer. Baer again was in second on the second lap, but again he and Wood were riding the same line as Wood kept the Scott Powersports/Greenland & Son Masonry sponsored Rotax a few lengths in front of Baer for the win. Rookie John Lewis put his 250 two stroke into fourth by the sixth lap and was pressuring Libhart for third by the end. Wood again grabbed the lead as the 250 A class came off the second turn, with Roy Miller, Chris Klinefelter and Brian Phillips behind. With Wood staying 'securely' in the lead, Klinefelter took second on the fourth lap, with Miller retaking it three laps later. After a poor start, John Lewis got rolling, displacing a tiring Klinefelter for third on the last lap. Bob Sweeten made his first outdoor start of the season a winning one, taking the 30 + class rather easily from Ken Yoder's Suzuki. Track owner, John Winsett Sr., took the 40 + class, with some mid-race pressure from Joe Dohm's Yamaha, before pulling out some breathing distance. Austin Greenland managed to stay upright in the finals to claim three finals. He held off James Rispoli for the 100 win, held off Rispoli again in the 85 (7-11), though Rispoli fell again late in the race trying to keep the pressure up, and easily won the 65 class that had a good battle for second between Derek Hersh, Tyler Kidwell and Josh Standiford during most of the race, with Standiford slipping into third on the final lap. Shane Narbonne won the 85 (12-15) final and also the 125 event. Jonathan Jordan and Mark Stambaugh took the 250 B and 600 B classes, respectively, while Stambaugh held off traveling buddy, Joe Dohm for the 500 2 Valve win. 30 +: 1. 71U Bob Sweeten 2. 57 Ken Yoder 3. 20 A Bill Bromley

Tyler Tillman from Glen Mills, PA is our Holeshot Hotshot for the month of May. Tyler pulled the holeshot at FDMC in the 50 cc oil injected class and rode hard in both moto's to take the overall win for the day. Tyler started riding at the age of 3 and began his motocross career when he was 4 years old. Look for Tyler in the future in the 50 cc stock class on his Cobra 50 at all the local tracks. Watch out next month, maybe you'll be the next MRA Hotshot.

The 1st Rule of Two-Stroke Performance:
More Air = More Power Only maximum air intake, correctly
accelerated and distributed into the crankcase can deliver maximum power.
The Boyesen Guarantee Every Boyesen product comes with a money back guarantee. If you are not completely satisfied with any Boyesen product, return it for its full refund.
An Intake Valve the Size of Your Fist Delivers Air with the Power of a Tornado To maximize airflow and release the hidden power in your race nike, replace your stock intake valve with a Boyesen RAD Valve. Integrated into the seamless, tenzalloy chamber is a quadrant of aerodynamic directional dividers. This patented, dyno-proven system power channels the charge evenly for instant, explosive movements of air at velocities of up to 500 MPH. Intelligently controlled by a set of Pro Series Reeds, you’ll get maximum flow velocity across the entire RPM range, and at all throttle settings. Each Boyesen RAD Valve is unique — tailor-made to a single model, year and displacement. While other aftermarker valves might change flange sizes or bolt patterns, they’re basically generic — and require you to irreversibly cut your intake boot to install! But with the RAD Valve, there are no compromises in power, no modifications needed. A true, bolt-on power boost: no kidding, no cutting.

Some of you might say, what is a TT Scramble ? Well if you've never been to one, and you would like to take your family out for a great day of racing action I recommend that you check out the Eastern PA Piston Poppers located in Thorndale, PA. A TT Scramble is basically a short track race with a right hand and a left hand turn with 1 jump on the back straight.Their next event is Fathers Day June the 16th, and they are just a short drive from just about anywhere in central PA, they run both youth and adult classes. Watch next months issue of M.R.A. for race results and pictures from Deb B. from their May 19th event.See you at the races. Jim Bull M.R.A.

“In the News” - Dave Hayes
Jonathan Beasley (Budds Creek) is planning a 2 day event August 14-15 at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Rockville, Maryland. The event will feature a stadium style track with an outdoor motocross track section attached to the stadium course. The outdoor track will run into the parking lot. Quality practice tracks are popping up on the MX radar screen. Here's a list of the practice tracks that have opened recently and I have heard good things about. * The Landing located in Easton, MD visit the web site at thelandingmx.com The landings offers seven tracks for practice, call 410-763-6555 or 410-763-8164 for times and fees. * Breezewood Proving Grounds located in Breezewood, PA visit the web site at breezewoodprovinggrounds.com Breezewood Proving Grounds Features, 3 Motocross Tracks, 1 Kids-Motocross Track, 1/16-Mile Dirt Oval, Kids Woods Trail and a 5-Mile GNCC Style Harescramble Course. Call 814-784-9987 for times and fees. Don't forget the Budds Creek National will be held on June 14-16. The fastest riders on two wheels will be there and you should also. This is also our first chance to see James "Bubba" Stewart the way fast Kawasaki pilot in action. Get your ticket information at buddscreek.com or call 301-994-9555. Quad racing is on the rise in District 7 and there were 36 entries at the May 5th point's race at Budds Creek. We have two reps looking out for the Quad riders this year.Jeremy Brandwein is the ATV Congressman and MX rep and Karen Grogg is his assistant rep. Karen will handle all Quad Harescramble related issues. If you have questions concerning Quads e-mail the reps through the District 7 web site. Speaking of the District 7 web site. It turns out his has been a well-kept secret. Visit the D-7 web sit at amadistrict7.com and get up to date point's information and other District 7 stuff. It appears that the Motocross Des Nations (MXDN) will be held at Competition Park September 27-29 in San Jacinto, CA. I was in Palm Springs this winter and I found this track on my way back to San Diego. All I have to say is I hope they are building a bigger track! The facility I saw looked to be about the size of Happy Ramblers! It seems that Budds Creek should have been the choice for this race since Jonathan hosted (at considerable personal expense I might ad) not one but 2 GP's within the last 8 years. Be the politics of World Motocross are complicated and I guess that's why they are having the race at the wrong track. For MXDN ticket info go to comppark.bcentralhost.com

VOL. 1
Performance R eport Do I have the right springs in my bike? How important is my sag to the overall performance of my suspension? Getting your bike to work well on the track is the key to winning races. The fastest motor in the world doesn’t guarantee you a spot on the podium. As today’s suspensions become more complex, that doesn’t mean getting your suspension to work has to be. The three main things that need to be in order for your bike to work well are valving, spring rates and your race and free sag adjustments. Valving suspensions takes years of experience and a full understanding of the way suspensions work, to achieve optimum results. With the wide range of people riding and racing it is almost impossible for the factories to valve suspensions in a manner that they will work for the average rider. VPE re-valves each customerís suspension according to their weight, riding ability, style, type of riding being done, and type of track being ridden on. Springs are dependent upon your weight, and style of riding as well as the type of bike you are riding. A very general rule is that most 125s are sprung for the 145160 pound rider, while the average 250 is set up for the 165-185 pound rider. Using the proper springs allow you to set your free and race sag so that your fork and shock are in the proper range of the stroke while riding. If your springs are to soft you will ride too far down in the suspension stroke and most likely feel a lot of harshness when encountering acceleration and braking bumps. Using a spring that is too stiff will not allow your valving to work, because the spring’s action will interfere with the compression and rebound capabilities of the valving. Although springs often cost about $90.00 a per end, without them your sag will not be set properly and thus your suspension will never work up to it’s potential. While valving and changing springs should only be done by professionals; for safety reasons, it is really very easy for you to make sure your sag is set properly. All you need is a pop-up stand and a tape measure or a suspension sag scale. Once your suspension sag is set properly it will be much easier for you to determine how well your suspension is actually working. The first thing we ask riders when they are having problems with their suspension is if they have their sag set properly. Surprisingly many people have no idea how important sag really affects your suspensions performance. If you follow these simple directions you will be able to get your sag set correctly, be able to tell if you have the right springs in your bike, and be on the way to dialing in your suspension.
1. Put your bike on a stand so that the rear wheel is off the ground and measure the distance from the center of the rear axle to a solid point above. Usually a seat bolt or the rear fender works well. After taking this measurement right it down. 2. Now you are ready to measure you race sag. Race sag is the amount the shock settles under your weight. Remove your bike from the stand and place it on a level area. Now while seated on the bike, bounce lightly a couple of times. Now while sitting in your normal riding position, forward on the seat, have a friend measure from the center of the axle to the same spot used before. Subtract this measurement from the measurement taken before. This is your race sag. Check your owner’s manual to see what the recommended amount is. (To increase or decrease the tension on your spring use the spring adjuster at the top of the spring) 3. Now check your static sag. This is the amount the shock settles under the weight of the bike alone. Without anyone sitting on the bike measure the distance between the two previous points. Once again subtract this distance from the first measurement to get your static sag. The static sag will also be listed in your owner’s manual. If you can’t get your static and race sag to fall within the correct ranges you may need a softer or stiffer spring. Amount of sag required will change from model to model, and year to year. Here are also a few things to remember when adjusting your suspension. New or rebuilt suspensions may need to be ridden ten to fifteen minutes for a break-in period. For your suspension to work up to it’s full potential start with your compression and rebound clickers at twelve out, on both your forks and shocks, and work from there. If you have to go more than 5 or 6 clicks in either direction you should most likely have your suspension revalved. Always keep notes on what your settings are for different tracks. This keeps the guessing out of suspension tuning and allows you to go back to proven settings if adjustments don’t improve performance. If you are having suspension or motor problems feel free to call us or stop in and visit us at the races. Go to www. vperacing.com for more info.
