Happy June to you all. I don’t think we have any official holidays in June, but I vote we make one. We could all use a little more time off to go racing. Well we’re hot into the race calendar here in D-6. There are 5 rounds of both the State Hare Scramble Series and 5 rounds of the MX Championship Series in the books. We’ve had a National GNCC event at Rausch Creek and the short track guys have an Amateur National Qualifier at Williams Grove this month.

MRA was at the GNCC race at Rausch Creek Motorsports Park last month and we had an

opportunity to talk with VPE sponsored Cross Country Racer Brian Schmid from Colden, NY. Brian races the GNCC series in the Open Expert Quad Division and has managed some very impressive finishes with his VPE Stroker engine on his 250R Honda. Brian finished 5th overall in the nation last year and as of race time was 4th in the point standings this year. Brian pulled an impressive 2nd place finish at Rausch Creek and was hot on the heels of the 1st place finisher. Watch out for this quad racer, before you know it heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be racing with the pros.

FROM NORTH JERSEY: Take Garden State Parkway south to exit 17.Bear left at end of ramp. Go to traffic light, make right (Rt. 9 North). Follow Rt.9 north 1/2 mile to light, make left (Rt. 550). Follow Rt.550 west to 2nd 4-way stop, make left (Rt. 610). Follow Rt. 610 about 100 yards and Track entrance is on the left. FROM SOUTH JERSEY: Take Garden State Parkway north to exit 13. Bear right at end of ramp. Go to traffic light and make a right (Rt. 9 North). Follow Rt. 9 North approx. 5 miles to 2nd light, make left (Rt. 550). Lewis Almost Doubles at Path Valley ST

John Lewis almost took a pair of wins as Path Valley Speedway managed to get a race in after a wet morning and early afternoon left the track a little soggy. After grading, the track was a little soft, but raceable, and 'flypaper' tacky. Lewis got a good, straight start to win the Sportsman final, and did the same to the 250 A class, but as his ABBA Systems/VPE sponsored Honda was pulling away, it came up with a flat rear tire about halfway, giving Chris Klinefelter the lead. While some of his competitors found out how much traction the track held as they pointed their front wheel to the sky. In the Sportsman final, Lewis left the line straight and true, with Ricky Winsett, Chris Klinefelter and Shawn Baer following. While Lewis smoothly added to his margin, Baer used the outside line to shoot into second at the end of the opening lap, bringing Klinefelter along. Baer quickly went into a comfortable second, but Klinefelter found his rhythm and moved up to challenge Baer in the closing laps. Coming of the final turn, they ran side by side, with Klinefelter taking secondby inches. A lot of the same bikes and riders returned for the 250 A final, and Lewis repeated his start again. Klinefelter and Baer eliminated the middle man this time and started fighting for second right away, with Donnie Mullen and Gary Conklin several lengths back. The traction proved too much for Lewis' Honda, as it spun the tire on the rim, flattening the rear tire off the fourth turn just past halfway. Baer tried to return the favor on Klinefelter, crossing the line side by side, but again Klinefelter's DMA/Deer Park Cycle/Williamson Cycle sponsored Honda held on. The 40 + class at Path Valley is usually the domain of track owner, John Winsett, who usually starts slow, but goes to the high line to take the lead. Tonight, he was one of the many who found a little too much traction at the start, letting Bruce Miller get a quick lead over Mark Stambaugh, Steve Heiser and Joe Dohm. By the third lap, Winsett and Heiser were fighting for second. This let Miller add to his margin. Heiser took second on the sixth lap. After losing to Jonathan Jordan in the 600 B final earlier, Cory Texter took the 250 B lead from Jordan at the start of the third lap. Brandon Robinson took second at the start of the final lap. Robinson later won the 125 B final. Joe Dohm took the 30+ final. Being the only 12-15 rider entered, Austin Greenland topped the 85 combined class over 7-11 class winner, Kenneth Lamberti. After a slow start, Evan Baer moved up to fourth overall in the late stages and pressured 65 winner, Tyler Kidwell for third. They crossed the line side by side, with Kidwell holding on to second.

Dalton continues to accomplish great things in his early racing career. Last year in MX competition he was a Loretta Lynns qualifier in the 50 oil division, he took a second place finish at The Maryland State Championships and he collected a fourth overall at the PA State Championships. In short track in 2002 he went undefeated in the oil injected class when he was on the track and he won 4 out of 5 races in the 50 stk class. Dalton continues his winning ways so far this season, he looks like the one everyone has their sites set on. Dalton will be traveling to the Grand Nationals in Springfield this year and he’s heading south to Florida to compete at the Mini O’s over the Thanksgiving holiday. I believe that’s what the mothers were probably thinking to themselves on Mothers Day at Sleepy Hollow MX. The Swarr family did a wonderful thing that Sunday when they commandeered that deluxe plug in toilet complete with flow thru ventilation and a flower on the seat. Now don’t ask me how I know all this, but that’s the word I get from my sources. Unfortunately ladies you may have to wait to Mothers Day again next year to use such fine facilities, I don’t believe Sleepy intends to raise their entry fees to support that john. It was great while it lasted. Now the word I got for the Fathers Day race is, no flowers or flow thru ventilation. But Dads come on out and bring the family. In addition to a great day of racing, my sources also tell me that Lebanon Valley Cycles is sponsoring the race, and they’re bringing two motorcycles to give away. One at the big track and one at the mini track, way to go LVC. – Jim Bull MRA

GNCC Racing – May 10-11, 2003 1,069 riders entered the 2 day event which pulled thousands of race fans from all over the country. There were riders entered from as far away as Washington State.

The GNCC Series is spread out over 13 rounds and

is run on some of the toughest terrain available in the good ole US of A. Top “Off Road Riders” compete to see who is the fastest man or woman in the land. This year’s event gave a lot of the local talent an opportunity to compete against these off road superstars.

Shippensburg Harescramble 5/11/03 The Pennsylvania State Harescramble championship series is nearing the halfway point of the season, this week round #5 led us to Shippensburg Pa. Compass Race Team sponsored this event and put together a great track. The track was located on farmlands near I81 in Shippensburg, Compass Race Team (CRT) transformed the fields and woods into a 3.5 mile stage for racers to put on their show. The start was set in a grassy field and led racers through a maze of banners and tall grass before entering the fresh cut trails in the woods. The A classes were started together at this event on the front row followed by the Vet class, 4 stroke B and 2 stroke B classes. The start of the A class was a tornado of mud and fumes for the first few miles. Once the path cleared Rob Hertz led the way on his LRD 250R followed closely by Todd Rothermel and Harlen Foley. Hertz had the lead in his class, the overall lead however was up for grabs. Rothermel on his new Polaris Predator and Foley on his Ray Wilt/Burgards backed Z400 had there thumpers dialed in and were in pursuit of the Hertz two stroke. A few miles into the woods the newly cut terrain took Hertz by surprise, the track went up a rise in the tight woods and around a left hand sweeper, Hertz had to get off the gas and lock up the brakes, sending him side ways into the trees. Foley on his Suzuki, had trouble stopping in time and ended up making contact with Hertz, then Rothermel followed from behind, and the three were nearly locked together. Harlen Foley got away first while Hertz and Rothermel recovered there quads from the brush. The collision left Rothermel's ATV with a damaged tie rod, Hertz however remounted his machine and put his sights on the overall lead. Within one lap Hertz overtook Foley in the field section and walked away with the 2 stroke A class win and the overall win. Foley ended up with the 4 stroke A class win and second overall. Tom Hertz also riding an LRD/JRD backed 250 R finished up second in the 2 stroke A class. Jon Bowers who has been riding strong all season long finished second to Foley on his Herrmannracing.com backed 400EX followed by Cannondale riders Randy Brandt and Mike Johnson (ATV Addiction). The vet class belonged to Cannondale rider Chad Kirby. Kirby took the lead right away and rode a pace matched only by A class rider Rob Hertz. Kirby shredded the competition as well as the terrain and finished up 3rd overall for the day and first in the Vet. class. Long time D6 racer John Kenney also piloting a Cannondale took 2nd in the class. Nate Gogno returned to his winning ways in the 2 stroke B class. After a rough few rounds, Gogno returned to the top of the podium with a convincing win, he led the race start to finish. In the 4 stroke B class it was Matt Highland taking the win followed by Brian Delucia, Ralph Johnson and Stephanie Kenney. Compass Race Team organized a great event, in only there second attempt. A huge thanks to Gene and everyone from CRT for adding yet another event to our D6 Harescramble series. Its great to see there are still promoters out there looking to improve our sport. For years our series stood idle with only a handful of tracks to attend. In only the past 3 years our series has grown from 15 to 18 events 10 of which were at the same track, to over 30 events taking us to new tracks all over Pa. We have seen the addition of several new racers coming from surrounding states on a regular basis. The sky is the limit for this sport, it will only grow as far as we make it grow. Remember to ride safely and respect your neighbors, but when you get to the track, let it rip.

“WE LEAVE THE COMPETITION BEHIND!” Atco Motocross Park – Atco, New Jersey April 19th, 2003

“Kuzbyt takes 3” Today was a beautiful day for some very good racing here at Atco. The track, in its 2nd year now holding motocross races and now part of District 6, was in great shape. The layout was totally changed from last year and it now features a single-triple-triple-triple finish line section. The start is a little bit longer and the jumps are all easy to do. With above 60 degree temperatures in the day but below 40 degree temperatures at night, it would set the tone of a great day of racing. The first class of the day was the 65cc 7-9 and 65cc 10-11 class. This race featured our Holeshot Graphics team riders J e s s e Kuzbyt and T y l e r W o z n e y, Thor/Renthal/Scott USA sponsored rider Matt Gillespie finished with Jesse a well respected 2nd overall in the racing the 125 C class at Atco. 10-11 class and Tyler racing the 7-9 class. Both riders were dominating in these classes and they were the only ones jumping a big double in the back rhythm section, which made up a lot of time over the rest of the field. They both finished 1-1 in these classes. Also, rounding out the top 3 in 65cc 7-9 class were KTM rider #15 Dylan Ahlert and Kawasaki rider #56 Bruce Redfield. In the

65cc 10-11 class, it was Jesse Kuzbyt taking the 1-1 overall and in tow were the 5s of Kyle Hill and the 4h of Daniel South. Our team riders also raced the Junior Super Mini class and 85cc 7-9 and 10-11 class. The Junior Super Mini class, which is basically the 85cc 7-11 class or Junior Mini class, turned out to be the hardest class for our team riders. In the first moto, it was Yamaha mounted rider Tyler Wozney taking the holeshot and in tow were Jesse Kuzbyt, the 38x of Mike Mackeprang, the 5m of Mike Sowa, and the 75 ride of Kyle Gillespie. After a couple of turns, Kuzbyt took control of the lead but out of nowhere, the 5m of Mike Sowa passed him and never looked back taking the moto win. Rounding out the top 3 were Kuzbyt and Wozney, holding off a very fast ride by Mackeprang. In the second moto, it was Kuzbyt taking the holeshot but again, Mike Sowa was on the rear fender of Kuzbyt but an unfortunate miscue in the finish line section by The big winner, taking home 3 overall wins, was Jesse Kuzbyt. Reactive Suspension By Andy Fleck & Al Carr

Once the correct spring rates have been verified you need to set your spring preloads. Preload is just what it sounds like, it is the amount the spring is compressed when installed in the forks or on the shock. In the forks this is generally about 7 - 8 mm. My experience has been that most aftermarket fork springs are the same length as the stockers, so when installed the preload is generally correct. Aftermarket shock springs are usually a little longer or shorter but this is not a problem. Measure the free length of the spring in mm then install it on the shock and tighten the preload collars to compress it. If you have the correct rate the amount of preload required will be between 10 and 15 mm Start at 14. With the shock installed place the bike on a stand with the rear wheel off the ground. Pick a point on the rear fender, I like to use the point where the fender and numberplate intersect, measure from here to a point on the rear axle. This measurement, usually around 600 mm on a full size bike, is your baseline number, write it down. Now take the bike off the stand and have the rider get on the bike and stand on the footpegs, you may need someone to help balance the bike and measure again from the same two points. The difference between this measurement and the first is your dynamic sag. The difference should be between 95 and 100 mm. If it isn't, loosen or tighten the spring collar until this is achieved. Once you get the desired number get off the bike and check how much the bike sags under its own weight, if you have the correct spring rate the suspension will compress between 15 and 25mm. If it's less than 15 the spring is too light if its more than 25 the spring rate is too stiff.

Having the correct spring rates and preload will not only help the suspension perform better but it will also give the bike balance front to rear which will optimize the handling. Finally we have the clickers. On the forks we have one on the top and one on the bottom of each leg. Depending on the model of fork the compression adjuster is on the bottom on KYB forks and on the top on Showas, the rebound adjuster is of course on the other end. On the shock the compression adjuster is on the reservoir and the rebound is on the bottom clevis. Internally the adjusters are comprised of a tapered needle positioned in a round port. As you turn the clicker in the needle goes deeper into the port blocking more of the port reducing the amount of oil that can flow through the port and thus increasing the damping force. Generally from the factory the clickers will be set at 11 or 12 clicks out, this is referred to as your baseline settings. The range of adjustment available is about 20 clicks, an important fact to remember is that the adjusters are most effective in the 1 to 8 clicks out range. What this means is that one click in this range is much more of a change than one click in the 10 to 20 range. As a result the further out you turn the clicker the more clicks you have to go to make a noticeable difference. There are a lot of riders that never touch their clickers because they are afraid they will screw something up. Never worry about this, if you make adjustments and things seem to get worse then you simply go back to your baseline settings and start again, remem-

ber you can always go back. To familiarize yourself with the effect each adjuster has I would like to suggest the following. Next time you go practicing try each adjuster on its minimum and maximum setting. Start with the fork compression adjuster, turn the adjuster all the way in to one click out. Now go ride, start slow as this will feel very different to you. After a few laps turn the adjuster all the way out and ride again. The reason for doing this is so you can get a feel for what too much or too little compression damping feels like. Doing the same with the rebound adjusters will give you a good feel, helping you spot problems and then knowing what to do to correct them. In closing I would like to mention one last time the importance of not racing on stock suspension fluids. After a few hours break in time the fluids in your forks and shock should be drained and replaced with a high performance synthetic. The benefits are better more consistent performance as well as reduced wear in the system. The cost to do this is very reasonable but is far outweighed by the benefits. To maximize our performance on the track we need to take advantage of all the resources available. Learning how to make correct adjustments to our suspension will be the single biggest improvement we can make at the track. Surprises Sprout at Trail-Way Night ST By Len Breech HANOVER, PA. MAY 3

At Trail-Way Speedway's first night short track in over three years, surprise finishes were the order of the night. Among the many surprises; the race ran, since the previous two yearly attempts at night racing were rained out, a rider made his first start in over eighteen years a winning one, and leading a race by a large margin on the final lap isn't a guarantee of a win. Raun Wood put his Scott Powersports sponsored Honda at the point of the 600 A final, with Ricky Winsett, Shawn Baer and Jared Mees trading positions several times a lap behind him. On the fourth lap, Winsett went into turn one a little too hot and tucked his front wheel under and fell. This caused Mees to let up briefly, letting Wood and Baer pull out several more lengths. Wood led the rest of the way, until he drove into one a little hard on the final lap, and slid up coming off two, letting Baer's Battlefield Harley Davidson/Baer Racing Products/VPE sponsored Rotax take the win. Most of the same riders returned later for the Sportsman final, that saw Mees get the lead from Wood, Baer and Winsett. This time, Winsett picked his spots better and took over second by the end of the second lap. Baer started dropping back, as Jason Isennock and John Lewis moved up to fourth and fifth. Mees kept his Lancaster H-D/Michael's Classic H-D Rotax in front the rest of the way. After suffering a flat just after the start of the 750 heat, Jared Mees got his Johnny Goad tuned Harley rolling and took the lead from Barney Waldron at the end of the first lap, with George Richtmeyer dropping his buddy another notch. Mees started pulling away, while heat winner Raun Wood was having a little too much power in his Honda RC 51 in the damp night air, getting into an ever changing battle for third with Lew Woods and Waldron. With two laps left, things started happening; Mees had problems with his swing arm, dropping out, and entering the first turn on the final lap, a bolt in his disk brake backed off just enough to lock up the rear tire. The battle for third earlier became one for the lead, as Wood couldn't hook up right, while Lew Woods' Triumph hooked up better and took the win by a length. Steve Bromley grabbed the 40 + lead from Jim Chapman, Steve Heiser, Bruce Miller and Vernon Caldwell. Chapman took the lead on the second lap, with Caldwell going into third by the end of the lap. Chapman, Heiser and Caldwell stayed close, with Caldwell taking the lead on the sixth lap. Brad Phillips as the quickest 250 B off the line, with Jonathan Jordan, Matt Young and Brandon Robinson. Jordan took the lead entering turn three on the third lap, with Robinson moving into second. After battling for several laps, Robinson went into first on the sixth lap, with Jordan falling in the fourth turn on the next lap. After dropping out of racing almost two decades ago, Adam Weiss returned to racing on one of his father's Yamahas. He shook off the 'track rust' by taking the 500 2 Valve lead from Jim Chapman, Tom Sisson and Mark Stambaugh. The top three stayed close, with Chapman pressuring Weiss for first on the last two laps. They crossed the finish line side by side, with Weiss' Larry's Service Center sponsored machine getting the nod. 40+: 1. 75 Vernon Caldwell Rick Winsett 2. 73 Jim Chapman 3. 13 Steve Heiser showed he has started to adapt to the new lightweight singles, as he battled John Lewis for the 250 A win, taking the lead at the end of the opening lap. Jim Hollister easily won the 30 + final. Ryan Henderson just held off Jonathan Jordan for the 600 B win, while Matthew Young took the 125 final. Brandon Atkinson won the 50 (4-6) class, with Dalton Worthington topped the 50 Oil Injected and 50 (7-8) classes. Tyler Kidwell won the 65 class, with Hayden Avery winning the 85 (7-11) and Austin Greenland easily topping the 12-15 division.

MRA had an invite to Lancaster Hondas 12th Annual Streetbike Party on May 17th, and we sure are glad we went. They hit the nail on the head when they called it a party, I’ve been to a lot of dealership open houses over the years, I’ve even organized them – I wish I would have called these guys first. The food courtesy of the Twin Rose Lady Riders was good and hot, Roto Glow was the band they brought in and they we even hotter. And the coolest part of the day was the test rides they offered , because hey anytime you get to try out a new Honda MC courtesy of your local dealer I think that’s pretty cool, let alone the temps were in the 50’s. Talking with Dave Moore, owner of Lancaster Honda at his open house, he offered me these inside tips. Anyone looking to purchase a new CR or XR Honda head on out to his shop. RAUSCH CREEK GNCC By Trish Krachun The 6th round of the GNCC Series landed upon a new track in Tremont, PA. The Rausch Creek Racing Facility is a top-of-the-line stop on the GNCC Tour. It boasts a rugged Cross Country Track littered with embedded sharp rocks, tight woods & 2 tunnel crossings on one side, a gnarly MX Facility down the road & a road racing facility which is in the process of being built. As the racing began, KLOTZ/LRD backed Bill Ballance grabbed the lead while Team Safari/LRD/Pro Parts Racing's Matt Smiley & Duncan Racing/Roll Design's Santo Derisi followed in hot pursuit. Smiley soon took the lead from Bill Ballance while Brandon Ballance, Bill's brother & 1st in the Pro Production class, caught the flying trio, passed DeRisi & made his presence known to the top 2. Going into the last lap, Brandon had to pit for a flat tire, goggles & gloves. Although he had a lengthy pit stop, no one passed him. DeRisi, however, caught Brandon later on the lap. "I took a wrong line... DeRisi & Greg Trew passed me. I passed Trew back while he was stuck with engine problems though." Meanwhile, the battle for the lead was still up in the air. Smiley was hung up on an uphill which Bill Ballance took advantage of & pulled away to secure his 1st place finish for the 5th time this year. Smiley got going again & managed to finish 2nd, while DeRisi finished 3rd (his 1st podium finish ever). "My dad & dad Cook did a great job changing my flat. I rode last weekend where there were a lot of rocks & felt real good. It really helped me out for today!" This marks the first time this season that a Pro Production racer has not finished on the podium. Bill Ballance stated "My Custom AXIS suspension really worked good today, we made some good adjustments." Smiley continued "Things were going my way for a while today. I felt real comfortable whenever I got the lead, but Bill was always right there. My LRD chassis, engine & AXIS shocks worked really good today. I look forward to being in front next time". The Pro Production class had an exciting race too. For the 1st half of the race, LRD/Klotz backed Brandon Ballance, Four Stroke Tech's Chad DuVall & HMF's Johnny Gallagher raced wheel-to-wheel, then all 3 were plagued with problems which set them back. Brandon Ballance fell back due to a flat tire, DuVall to a long pit stop & Gallagher to a battery cable that disconnected from his Suzuki Z400. This gave Thomas Barrett & Tyson Thomas, who both started on the 2nd line of Pro/Pro Production racers, a chance to catch up & capture 1st & 2nd in the Pro Production class as well as 4th & 5th Overall after deducting a minute from their time. Brandon Ballance grabbed 3rd in the Production class. William Yokely, brought home 4th on his Yoshimura/Roll Design/Elka/Nac's backed Suzuki Z400 & Duvall finished 5th. Speaking with Brandon after the race on his season so far, he commented "After I won the first race of the season, I stopped working out & ate whatever I wanted... then after the South Carolina race where I had really bad arm pump, I figured out that I better start eating right & working out again. Now, I'm riding really good again."

Morning Action

Adam Howell finished 1st Overall & 1st in 4-stroke stock class on his Team Green Kawasaki V-Force 700. Stephanie Parton finished 2nd Overall & 1st in the Woman's class tied with Kevin Wise on his Polaris Predator. Howell had the overall lead almost the entire race, although Team Alba's Traci Cecco was hard charging on her Suzuki Z400 to catch him. She had the woman's class lead wrapped up as Troy Racing's Stephanie Parton fell back early in the race after submerging her Suzuki Z400 in one of the tunnel crossings which caused her quad to suck in too much water. Cecco, however, clipped a tree and bent her axle, which eventually caused her lug nuts to vibrate loose, and her wheel fell off. Parton's engine problems cleared up after a pit stop. She passed her way up to 2nd and eventually passed Cecco while Cecco was trying to put her wheel back on her quad. Parton won the Woman's class, Angel Atwell 2nd & Jean Lovely 3rd. Cecco checked in for 6th. Kevin Wise, who put on a hard charge to try to catch Howell early in the race finished 2nd in the 4-stroke stock class & John Wright finished 3rd.
