Hello Race Fans!
Welcome back everybody, I hope you all had a great Memorial Day Weekend. There was certainly plenty to do in the racing community, let alone all of the family activities and other goings on around the area. I hope everyone took a moment to remember the Veterans that have gone ahead of us that have served this great nation. Without them I don’t believe that there would be a need for this coloumn and maybe many others. They have paved the way for our freedoms so please lets not ever forget. On to the racing. Again May brought some great turnouts to many events around the region. The weather has been great for racing and we are getting well into the many great racing series that are going on around us. The Ultimate MX Championship Series is in full swing and we will see rounds coming to Pagoda, Hurricane Hills and Raceway Park in the month of June. The top riders from District 6 and the surrounding areas are competing for over $ 20,000. 00 in cash and prizes. This is one series you don’t want to miss out on. Along the PA MD border we have the Mason Dixon Riding Association (MDRA) series happening. This is a 12 race series that is getting red hot. The rider turnout has been phenominaI and it grows with each passing round. The competition has been great in the Expert ranks and the Amateur, Vet and especially the mini gates have been filled to capacity. Check them out at masondixonriding.com. The BP Promotions PA State Hare Scramble Series is going full bore as well.
Please don’t forget the schedule change this month with the Jack Frost Round being moved to Hurricane Hills on June 19th. Also be aware that the Hurricane round is offering Double State Points so you won’t want to miss that one. Later in the month the series moves to Back Mountain, I hear this is a favorite so be sure to check it out. Series points can be found at www.harescrambleracing.com and be sure to check out coverage from Rounds 2, 3 and 4 in the pages of this issue. Harescramblers while your at the races keep an eye out for TS Photos. Tom has been providing photos from all of the events and you can check them out after each round at www. mcracingaction.com. As always we ask that you support the promoters and advertisers in the pages of MRA. There are many places for you to do business and there are certainly many places that you can compete. The advertisers in these pages are the ones that truly support your sport. Motorcycle Racing is a tough business to be in, our advertisers have your best interest at heart so please allow them to make a buck when they can. And please tell them that you saw their ad here. I would like to thank each and every one of our readers for picking up a copy of MRA. A very big thanks goes out to our paid subscribers, you are the ones that have stepped up to the plate to really make this happen. You guys rock, your subscription helps us grow and who knows, maybe you’ll be the next racer featured in MRA. !! Until next time.

MDRA HOTSHOT Name: Event:
Morgan Wotring from Zionsville, PA is our Kenda Tire, Holeshot Hotshot for the month of June. We caught up with Morgan and her family at the Sleepy Hollow MX Park last month where Morgan was up to her old tricks of winning races and pulling holeshots. Actually, the whole Wotring family has the holeshot fever in their blood. Last year we featured Morgans little brother Travis in the holeshot column when he was just 4 years old. We were watching Morgan last year as well but 2005 really seems to be her year. She has moved up to the bigger quad and she is really making things happen out there. We talked to Morgan and she said her dad used to be a racer and that he really inspires her to go out and do a good job. It must be working because Morgan is on fire on the race track. She was able to pull off both moto wins at Sleepy Hollow today to add to her overall list of wins for 2005. I would like to thank the whole Wotring Family for their time for this interview and Morgan I wish you the best in all that you do. Keep an eye on this young lady in 2005 and the future, I’m sure you’ll see her in the winners circle many times. And watch out next month, who knows, you just may be the next MRA Holeshot Hotshot. Dillon Thomas from Hanover, PA is our first ever MDRA Hotshot. Here at MRA we like to feature hotshots of all kinds so we thought it only appropriate to start an MDRA Hotshot column. It’s very obvious from the caliber of talent at these events that we need to have this feature. The tough part is going to be deciding who to use, there are so many great riders in the MDRA, so please be patient with us, we’ll do our best. We met Dillion last year while he was racing at Doublin Gap MX Park. He had just begun racing but we could tell by his performance that he was going to become a fantastic rider. Dillion had managed to grab a few top 10 finishes last season racing against the other 65cc hotshots around the district many of whom had a ton more experience than him. Dillion went into the winter content with his performance but he was anxious for the new season to begin. Little did most of us know that the MDRA was going to be born during the off season. This organization is a Godsend for many of the youth racers around the region. They’ve broken the mini classes down not only by age but by skill level as well. This allows a mini racer to compete with other kids of his caliber rather than going out to try and compete against kids that may have 3 - 4 more years experience than they do.. We new Dillion had potential, but the MDRA allowed him to compete at a level he needed too. Dillion signed up for the C Class and guess what? He’s winning races. And it’s not like it’s a cakewalk, this kid is out there earning his wins. To date Dillion has won 6 out of 8 motos which gives him three overall wins and a second place finish. Dillion is building confidence, having fun and gaining the necessary experience to be able to move on and do well. Keep an eye on young Dillion Thomas, my bet is they’re gonna have to build a trophy room for him. And watch out next month, who knows, you just may be the next MRA -MDRA Hotshot. Jim Bull MRA

Pagoda Motorcycle Club
RD#4 - D6 Points • April 17, 2005 • Photos by Jim Mucklin Photography Round # 4 of the District 6 Championship Points Series brought a few firsts to the Pagoda Motorcycle Club in April of this year. To start things off Pagoda had a great practice day on Saturday bringing 280 riders to the facility for an open practice the day before the race. Next off, Pagoda set an attendance record of 532 riders on race day and last but not least, Jere Swarr owner of Sleepy Hollow MX donned his race gear and competed for the first time since, well I won’t say when but some of you Mom’s and Dads might not have even been born yet. Let’s just say it’s been a while, kudos to Jere for climbing back on and finishing 13th out of 23 in his division.
MRA could not be here on this day but we would like to thank Jim Mucklin Photography for providing the great racing action shots. Pagoda’s next race weekend is the first weekend of June when they will double up again only this time offering Short Track racing on Saturday night and Motocross on Sunday. Sundays event is part of the Ultimate MX Championship Series that is being sponsored by MSR / Answer Racing. MRA will be there so be sure to log onto www.mcracingaction.com after the event to catch all of your great racing photos. And log onto Pagoda’s website to catch complete results and happenings from the track.

PA State hare Scramble Photo Gallery Rounds 2, 3 and 4 • Photos by T.S. Photos
Harescramble Racing in the State of PA is hot. On the following pages check out photos from around the state from rounds 2 , 3 and 4 by T.S. Photos. Tom has been traveling with his sons to all of your events and providing photos for print and online viewing and purchase. You can check out Tom’s work on our website: www. mcracingaction.com and if you see him at the track make sure you say hi. We listed all of the results we could get our hands on and you can check out point’s standings at Mike Soudas website: www.harescrambleracing.com. Mike does a great job listing tons of off road information and there are rider forums available too. Don’t forget your schedule change this month, the June 19th event has been moved from Jack Frost to Hurricane Hills and it will be a Double PA Points event. Back Mountain is also in the schedule for late in the month. Coming up June 12th at Miles Mountain there is a WNYOA Hare Scrambles event, they are advertising Thousands in cash and prizes. I hear there is some good competition in that organization and Miles Mountain offers an excellent facility. You may want to take advantage of your weekend off and head north to kick some New York Butt. Tell them MRA sent you. Get info at www. milesmountainmx.com
Mini racers love the jumps at Hurricane Hills. Joshua Weikel grabs a 2nd place finish at Foot of Mountain. Tim McAndrew takes a second finishing backwards with a bent up front end.
Jerod Stoner, riding for Team Gas Gas takes the holeshot and the O/A win.
Albert Janes soars to a third in Senior action at the Foot.
Keeping it all in the family !

RD#3 Ultimate MX Series • May 8, 2005 • Story & Photos by Jim Sanderson MSR, Pro Taper, RRP and Answer Racing have teamed up to sponsor a brand spanking new motocross series consisting of 16 rounds for 2005 called the Ultimate Motocross Championship. It is one of the biggest series to hit the east coast in years and features over $20,000 in cash and prizes. This new series is being run in conjunction with the AMA District Six Championship series. Eight of the best tracks in the upper Northeast will each host 2 rounds of the series and riders who participate in the District Six series could also win the Ultimate Motocross Championship series by riding the same races. Casey Clark had a great day at round three of this new series. Clark topped both the 125 and 250 A class podiums. In the 125 class, Clark and Mitch Dougherty battled in both moto’s with Dougherty taking the first moto win by a measly two seconds over Clark. Clark however, was able to take the lead early in the second moto and maintain it to the end to claim the overall with a 2-1 to Dougherty’s 1-2. RRP’s Jeremy Cook rounded out the 125 A podium with a consistent 3-3 tally. Clark and Dougherty also battled in the 250 A class, but Clark managed to stay well ahead of Dougherty and take the overall with a perfect 1-1 to Dougherty’s 3-2. The riders in the Vet A and B as well as the 125 and 250 A and B classes received and extra treat when they arrived at the riders meeting on Sunday mourning and were informed that they would be running the full National track layout for the day as opposed to the usual abbreviated National track layout featured at the majority of the Amateur races on the Broome-Tioga schedule. Clark led the pack out of the first turn in the first 125 A moto. Trailing were Dougherty, Alex Sigismondi, Mike Dougherty and Cook. When the lead riders descended the National hill on lap one, Clark still had the lead with Mitch Dougherty second. Clark and Dougherty were clearly pulling away from the rest of the field. Mike Dougherty, Cook and Sigismondi were third through fifth. Clark had a minor bobble at the base of the hill on lap two but it was just enough for Dougherty to squeak by on the inside to claim to the lead. Mike Dougherty and Cook continued to battle for third when Aaron Dieter got by Sigismondi taking fifth. Dougherty got the first moto with Clark only two seconds back. Cook, Mike Dougherty and Dieter rounded out the top five. Mitch Dougherty and Cook led the start of the final 125 A moto but Clark was able to get by both riders on the huge downhill ski jump to take the point shortly after the start. Dieter and Sigismondi were fourth and fifth. Clark had a two second advantage on Dougherty on lap two. The top five quickly spread out and the rest of the moto was a snoozer. Clark got the win with a two second gap on Dougherty. Cook, Dieter and Sigismondi rounded out the top five.

Hurricane Hills • Loretta Lynn Northeast Area Qualifier Hurricane Hills has and will always be one of my favorite tracks in District 6. I attended the Sunday races only, due to the fact that 250/open B Mod was running on day 2 of the two-day format. I started off my day bright and early approximately 4:00A.M., and knew there was a long 3-hour drive ahead of me. Luckily the previous night I saved myself agony and loaded the van and trailer with all of my gear, gas can, bike and even a grille with a pack of hotdogs. It was my first race since moving up to B class and I was completely overwhelmed with the idea of trying to qualify for an Amateur National as big as Loretta Lynn’s is. I arrived at the track before most if not all of the rest of the racers were even awake. It seemed kind of peaceful but then I saw the track. From the looks of things, I thought I’d be going home at the end of the day completely covered in wet, heavy mud. They held a wonderful chapel service at 8:30 and riders meeting was started at approximately 9:00. The riders’ meeting was very informative, and they do something that most tracks don’t but I think they should. The gentleman that was speaking at the riders meeting chose three random people to call out their names to make sure that everybody attended. I think it was the first riders meeting I saw almost everybody at. Immediately after riders meeting the sun started shining and practice started with the C class. As they were getting off the track you could tell it was a mess. Most people in B class tried to spread out from each other to save the trouble of getting roosted with mud for 5 laps. After practice I had a long wait
and a lot of time to try to pick out the fast lines by watching some of the great riders that showed up for the day, including Jason Lawrence, Phil Nicoletti, Mitch Dougherty, Nick Desiderio, and many others that led to some great battles all day long. Finally it came closer and closer to my race, so I started to suit up in all of my gear, and go over the bike one last time before the slow first gear crawl to staging. While I waited in staging I saw a few people from last year in the C class, most noticeable was Adam Blessing. I hadn’t ridden in about 5 months prior to the race, so it was nice to see all the familiar faces that are like my family on every Sunday. With every lap that went by in the class ahead of me, I started getting more and more jumpy and pumped up to race. Finally we all saw the white flag come out and we started up to get ready to race. When the gate dropped you can never tell how your start is until the first turn. I was around 10th place and got pushed to the outside, then taken out. My bike was tangled with a Honda 450 and by the time we both got up and started, my hopes for qualifying for Loretta’s were gone. I cruised the track, knowing that a half-lap lead was almost impossible to catch and a DNF is a motocrosser’s nightmare. Over the finish line I got roosted with some pretty big rocks and had a chunk taken out of my skin down to my jawbone. When I got off of the track my mom saw I was bleeding on my jersey and pants and I couldn’t even tell. She insisted that we took a visit to the doctor or the hospital so we loaded up right after that and left. It took us a couple of hours to get home but I really
started feeling pain when the trip was almost at its end. Some weekends are great ones where you can show up, race, and win, but this was my off week. In the end all that mattered was that I had fun and I know what my competition will be like for the rest of the season. Next step for me is practicing, and training physically at the gym probably five times this week. It’s time to rejuvenate myself
and get back into the racing community. I’d like to thank my sponsors: EastCoastMX. com, Offroadmotorsports1.com, FMF/909, MotoGraphX, Tag Metals, ASV Inventions, and I saved the best for last...Motorcycle Racing Action. See you at the races! Gary Gallagher Jr. 250/Open B #28G

California Dreaming or New Mexico Nightmare?
I’m sure many of you have seen it at the track, the big orange bus that may have been built sometime before the ice age. Yes, you know the one I’m talking about, the trusty stead that transports the ECS
So after the guys got done playing on the local MX tracks, Chuck flew out to California to meet his son and check out some desert riding on the way back to the good ole state of Pennsylvania.
race team around our great district and to all ends of the earth. Well we need to share a report just in that has sent “Big Orange” to dry dock, at least temporarily. For the past two years, Chad Aughinbaugh of Ephrata Honda has taken his bus and some of his race team and headed to California to put in some hot laps over the winter. The team has spent time at some of the nicest facilities on the west coast and a few of them have even been passed by many factory riders while there. Chad and his team mates have rode at Perris Raceway and Glen Helen, they’ve spent time at Star West and Lake Elsinore among many others. This year Chads dad Chuck, owner of ECS decided that he wanted to spend some quality time with his son riding in the deserts in the western region of our great country.
The boys decided to take the southern route home and pointed their big orange bus towards New Mexico. On their way they made a few stops here and there to look for rattlesnakes and desert turtles but found that desert riding wasn’t all that it was cracked up to be, so on they trudged. It didn’t take long for the pair to figure out that not only is New Mexico known for its deserts but it also has quite a few mountains. Well big orange made his way up and over the mountains using all of its transmissions ranges. Chugging to the top then drifting down the other side. This was going along fine until Chad just happened to notice an excess amount of smoke billowing out of the engine compartment in his rear view mirror. Chuck instructed Chad to pull over and he proceeded to do a damage assessment.
I guess it’s a good thing that this all took place at the top of a mountain instead of on the way up. From the over exertion of all the mountain climbing the bus had somehow caught on fire and damaged the throttle cable. The pair thought, we’ll just drift to the bottom of the mountain and pick up a cable in the next town. Luckily there was a town at the bottom of the mountain, the throttle cable, well that wasn’t quite as easy to find. “Now what”? they thought. It’s a well known fact that motorcycle mechanics have some of the best talents for, let’s say “creative engineering” to keep it politically correct than most folk do so it was off to the Dollar Store. There they found some nuts and bolts and a 50 foot section of Class A clothesline. You have to remember that a buses engine is located in the back of the vessel. Once back on the bus a pair of Rental handlebars were commandeered and the engineering began. Within a short period of time the tech staff from ECS had installed a first class throttle mechanism that any 90 year old bus would be proud to sport around. The clothesline was run from the
the living quarters section and attached to the Renthal bars in the d r i v i n g
compartment 50 feet away. It was the finest hand throttle that anyone from Pennsylvania had ever designed. They must have liked the two man operation so much they drove the entire 2600 miles home with their new throttle assembly. You gotta remember, steering, clutching, braking, shifting and a homemade hand throttle among other things requires more moving parts than any one man has available. Talk about some quality family time. The moral of the story is? I still don’t know. Jim Bull MRA If you would like to be part of the next ECS Race Team adventure, call Chuck or Chad at (717) 738-1184 and ask them how you can be part of Team ECS.
MOTO MOM
engine through the garage section, through I am up at 4 am! Rushing around for the last bit of gear, packing the food, loading the bike, the tool box, and lets not forget the kid. Wake up the little ones; they just can’t seem to tend to themselves at home. I really do enjoy hearing the screams from the back of the truck, they go on for at least an hour of the two hour drive. Since I do it week after week, I must love it. It starts after the mandatory Wa Wa pit stop. Sure enough someone didn’t get the right high sugared candy at 5 in the morning. Is there any other reason to break the sound barrier at that time? It’s only natural to spill the chocolate milk before we are even out of the parking lot. Of course I didn’t bring any other clothes; they are still in the wash. Where are the baby wipes? They work just as well as a bath. Oh wait, they are home, sitting on the counter. I know there are other moms at the track, much better at organization. I’m sure one of them will have something for me. They have to get tired of seeing my kids so dirty after only an hour at the track. So what is this all about?? The four hour waits until practice? Yes, 4 hours! We have to get there as soon as the gates open. We need a good pit spot. Who wants to push a bike all that way, when we can get there at the crack of dawn, park right in front and just have to wait, instead of walking? If you’re lucky, you have met up with some great people, who put their chairs out holding your spot. That helps, since we are always a tad late because we always forget to get gas the night before. The coffee also runs out about an hour after we leave Wa Wa! So next time you see some toolboxes or chairs out holding a spot, they are probably for us. What can I say, I love the atmosphere. I love the cold mornings, the hot afternoons and the nonstop feeling that I need to eat. And you wonder why I look a bit more plump this
year than last. The chit chatting that goes on between the moms, the dads and the kids at that time in the morning gives me something to look forward to. Race day is my favorite day of the week. I look forward to meeting up with the moms that I left only a week ago. There is nothing else going on, outside of that track. It is as if we are in our own little world. The worries about real life leave, the minute we enter the gates. Aside from that, it’s the sound of the bikes and the smell of the fuel. The scream from the revved up engines gets my heart pounding, and my head. The zoned out look my kid gets while he’s up on his bike, in staging. Getting “into the zone” is a must!! The meaner we look, the better our chances of intimidating our fellow 8 year old racers are! There is nothing cuter than 10 little kids, lined up with helmets that their necks can barely hold steady. Leaning down, staring straight ahead, and nodding at the gate. The day is nothing short of excitement overload! Your heart pounds, your palms get sweaty. Your kid is at the gate and it drops!! The race is on! We just pray that our kids ride safe and do their best. Most importantly have fun. Listening to the dads give instructions and hearing the moms yell as their racer comes zooming by. I can’t imagine spending my weekends any other way. That is what it’s all about!! At least from this mini mom’s perspective. -- Deana Cox

RD#2 MDRA Race Series • May, 1 2005 • Photos by MRA Round # 2 of the MDRA Race Series was held at Karla Cains Mountaineer Raceway in Inwood, WV in early May. Mountaineer is easily accessible and snuggled in a beautiful mountain setting right off of interstate 81. Round # 2 proved to be just as exciting as the opening round at Blue Diamond Park with over 500 racers showing up to compete for the great year end awards that are being offered by the MDRA. Classes were full in all of the youth races with classes being divided up into A, B and C divisions. The class breakdown makes the racing more competitive for the youth racers as well as building confidence in their riding ability. We have kids winning races and awards that maybe would never have in a different environment.
In amateur racing action William Duffy showed up and joined the MDRA. Duffy dominated three divisions and had the rest of the MDRA amateurs wishing he would have stayed home. He took the wins in School Boy, 125 B and the 4 Stroke Divisions. In expert racing action the podium spots were changing all day. No doubt with names like Cook, Yentzer, Toth and Wile. Jones and Brodsky and Kendall were there two, the list goes on and on. There are a lot of things you can do for training in our sport, but if you do not follow the basics you will not perform to your highest potential. Your body will let you down just like your bike if you do not change the air filter and engine oil. If you do not eat right and get the rest that your body needs for recovery then your body and mind will also break down during training, riding and racing. Follow these simple daily thought and it will all come together for you.
Daily Thought Program 1. Rest: seven to ten hours per day. Try not to play catch up with your hours. Take naps if you have to. 2. Nutrition: Eat three square meals per day. Use the basic food groups; grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, meat and beans. Print out the new 2005 food pyramid chart from the USDA website (www.mypyramid. gov) and place it on your refrigerator for reference. Greens are great for recovery. Drink lots of water!
3. Stretching: Try to stretch from your neck to your toes. Don’t over do it; 15-30 seconds each stretch is all you need. 4. Warm-Up: Before all workouts. Try to do something to get yourself going, that way you will be prepared for anything and everything.
5. Work-Out: Make an honest effort. Don’t quit! Go into the workout with a goal. Try to at least repeat your last workout or better it. Remember you will not reach your seasonal goal by coming up short of your workout goal. 6. Warm-Down: Don’t just stop! Keep moving until you have your pulse down, normal breathing. 7. Diary & Review: Fill in your diary while it’s fresh in your head.If you wait until later, you might forget something important. While doing this you will be reviewing your training day.
…if you do not follow the basics you will not perform to your highest potential.
If you follow these thoughts, you will not only be successful in your program, but you will either reach or surpass your seasonal goals. Learning good habits (rest, nutrition, stretching, warm-up, workout, warm-down, and review) will not only improve your racing but your life. I know you can do it. I am here to give you support. All you have to do is believe in yourself and go do it. Good luck and work hard. - Bob Schuler (610) 633-6269 Totaltwt@hotmail.com

KTM Junior Supercross challenge RD#13 Pontiac Superdome • April 9, 2005 • Photos by Kevin Sheckells
By now must of us have heard about or witnessed the KTM Junior Supercross Challenge that is held at all Pro Supercross events. In order to get choosen for one of these events riders need to contact their KTM dealer and request an application. You then must meet the criteria, height, weight, age, you must have good grades and some racing background. Finally once all the applicants are excepted for an individual Challenge Event, they randomly pick 15 riders to compete. Odds are mighty slim if you only apply for one race, but chance had three riders from Maryland make the cut for the Pontiac Michigan Round. Sam Sheckells, Les Warfield and Tyler Webster represented their homnetowns of Perry Hall, Pasadena and Owings Mills respectively. On the Saturday morning of April 9th the riders met at sign up and got their passes and wristbands for the day’s event. We
then headed over to the KTM tent and got introduced to one another. Sal from KTM America introduced us to Stacey and Kristy LaCurrelle who were our guides and assistants. We then met Brandon our mechanic and the Clear Channel people, Erin Bales and Irv Braun, the voice of Supercross. Shortly after, Bevo Forte of Scott Goggles popped in and gave us all goggles, then the M2R Rep showed up and Travis Pastrana talked him into giving all the kids free helmets. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, they took us to the rear of the big rig and we got fitted with new gear. And last but not least we met the roving Supercross Chaplain who gave us some encouraging words before the big race. At around 11:00 AM we did the track walk, man those tracks are tough! We then ran our practices and got to meet Bubba Stewart, K-Dub, Davi Milsaps and
a whole lot of other pros. They also threw in a autograph signing session where the boys got to give their biggest fans their autographs. Later in the day we did manage to see some qualifying rounds and then at 8:15 our boys got to hit the track in front of 52,000 fans! They brought the camera crew across the starting gate and announced all of the kids. It was really impressive, the same attention the pros get. When the gate dropped our Maryland boys went right to work and moved to the front rapidly. Sam had a good look at the holeshot but dropped the lead in the corner and pursued. Tyler was running in fourth while Les was battling for the 6th place position. Sam
fell and all the boys moved up putting Sam back to 6th. It was an exciting race and all the boys did a great job. In the end Sam worked his way back to a fourth place finish, with Tyler taking 5th and Les grabbing 6th. Congrats to our Maryland entries, we should all be very proud. And a big thanks goes out to KTM North America for a great show. Kevin Sheckells

It was Round # 1 of the East Coast Enduro Associations Hare Scramble Series and it all went down just outside of Good Springs, PA (better known as the Tower City area). This years course was just over six miles long and consisted of a combination of open fields, fire roads and fresh single track. It was a beautiful day for racing with temps in the 60’s and bright sunny skies. All the top racers from around the region showed up for this one. Team Gas Gas made a strong showing with Factory Support riders Fred Hoess and Wally Palmer riding out of the Bromley Camp and Jerod Stoner campaigning out of Cumberland Kawasaki. Ryan McGaha was there as well as Pro GNCC Racer Ryan Rodgers on his # 25 Yamaha. Several New England fast guys made the trip down to compete and till the Main Event had left the start over 175 racers took to the woods. Ryan Rodgers got off to the early lead with Wally Palmer and Jerod Stoner right on
his rear fender. By lap two Palmer had made a pass on Rodgers with Stoner falling back to fifth. Hare Scramble veteran Fred Hoess stayed consistent running in the top 10 early in the race. Hoess kept on pace and slowly started to catch the leaders. In the end it was Hoess taking the win followed by Ryan Rodgers and Ryan McGaha. The C classes, Youth and Pee Wee groups were full as well. 96 Youth racers took the green flag and another 83 Pee Wee racers took to the rugged Tower City trails to see who would go home champion on the day. KTM pilot Tegan Temple earned the win in the Pee Wee division while youth class vet, Andrew Delong took the checkers in the Youth Race. As always the event went off without a hitch. You can view complete event results at www.ecea.org and be sure to check out complete event photos at www.mcracingaction.com. Jim Bull, MRA

The Landing MX
RD#3 MDRA Race Series • May 15, 2005 • Photos by MRA The Landing MX in Easton, MD. was the site for Round # 3 of the new Mason Dixon Riding Associations 2005 Race Series. This series is just in it’s infancy but has already attracted huge numbers to it’s events. No wonder, till the end of the year the MDRA will award over $ 20,000.00 in cash and awards to both amateurs and experts alike. This particular race weekend was chilly and overcast with rain threatening, there was a D7 Gold Series Points Race at Budds Creek and still over 300 racers came out to earn valuable points towards those year end awards. Only a few rounds into the series ,several riders are starting to establish themselves as the reckoning force in their respective classes. In expert racing action, West Shore Suzuki’s Willy Toth is leading the 250 class and seems to end up battling Ephrata Cycles Jeff Yentzer in the 125 division week in and week out. In other expert action, John Bowlin is also starting to pull away in the points lead in both the 25+ and 30+ expert divisions. In amateur racing Brian Domschke is leading both the 125 C and Vet C classes. Mike Wylie is another two class leader
opening up the lead in the Vet and Senior B groups. In youth action, Greg Sidebotham has his # 95 Suzuki dialed in and is leading both 60 and 80cc (7-11) B divisions and in the Womens class, Jessica Childs and Meagan Cascio are neck and neck for the points chase. The racing action gets better every week. If you’re looking for a place to race, the MDRA might just be worth checking out. You can find all the information you need on their website at www.masondixonriding. com including up to date results and point standings. If you don’t have web access stay tuned to MRA, we are the official paper of the MDRA with race coverage from each round including schedules and updates. You can also find complete event photos on our website at www.mcracingaction.com. One last thing, be sure to visit The Landing MX often. Not only do they hold sanctioned race events there, they are a full practice facility. You can get their complete info here in MRA or log onto www.thelandingmx.com.

Tomahawk MX
RD#4 MDRA Race series • May 22, 2005 • Photos by MRA Round # 4 of the MDRA Race Series found us heading to the Tomahawk MX Park in Hedgesville, WV. Tomahawk is a gem of a track hidden in a small valley a few miles off of Interstate 81. After todays event I have a feeling that it won’t be as hidden as it once was. There is a MX track, a Supercross track and a top notch Hare Scramble course on the grounds. I have to say that the MDRA members are a loyal bunch. Membership continues to grow at each event and on this day 80 % of the members showed up to do battle. Over 500 racers converged on this little secret called Tomahawk and I believe almost all went away wiith a smile on their face. As is becoming the usual, the mini and amateur classes were full of young racers looking to earn their wings, and the experts keep coming back to chase the guaranteed cash payouts. I remember just a few short months ago in talking with Willy Toth at the Motorama Races in Harrisburg. Willy had just been bumped unexpectedly into the A class and he was about as nervous as a guy could get. If you’d see him now you would never have believed that to be true. Willy is kicking butt in both divisions and I’m sure he’s loving those guaranteed expert payouts at each round. Speaking of Toth’s, lets not forget about Garret. I believe he’s about all of thirteen years old and guess who’s leading the 125
B division. Late last year Garret said enough with the mini’s and he skipped the C class and went straight to 125 B division. I’m sure there are some MDRA members that wish he would have tried the C class for a while. Other shining stars that we’re starting to see in the mini ranks. Dalton Blettner leading the 50 B division. Britton Stewart is a name that’s been popping up at the top of the win columns every round and young Tyler Murphy took a win in the 85 (7-11) B division today. I believe it was just last year he was still on a 50. The list of names goes on and on. We are seeing a group of riders racing in a true motocross series that are having a great time and that are looking forward to reaping the benefits. I can’t wait to the banquet it’s gonna be a blast. Look for the MDRA Series to be back at Tomahawk the first weekend in June and we’ll be staying in WV to finish out the month at Mountaineer. If you’re looking for a great place to compete, Tomahawk is the place. They also offer practice days a few days a week. Check their ad here in MRA or you can log onto their website for all the details at www. tomahawkmx.com Be sure to check out race photos from todays event at www.mcracingaction.com.

2005 Schedule of Events
Tomahawk MX Park - Centrally located and nestled in the beautiful West Virginia hills, features a 1.3 Mile GP style Motocross Track, a Kids Arenacross Track, and a Hare Scramble Loop. We are currently in the process of adding 2 new Kids Tracks and a new Supercross Track, giving Tomahawk a total of 5 tracks. With our new Kids Tracks you can bring your beginner riders out and feel secure knowing that they’ll be safe and having fun, even if they’re just learning. These additional tracks will be open for the upcoming season. With our various tracks and layouts, we cater to all skill levels and ages. Tomahawk has open practice year round (weather permitting in winter), and there are no memberships required to practice. Practice days are Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Be sure to check our website at www.tomahawkmx.com for updates on practices and races. For the 2005 season, Tomahawk MX will be part of the new Mason Dixon Riding Association (MDRA). We will host two MDRA races, in addition to our own racing schedule. Bikes and Quads are welcome at Tomahawk on practice days. For this upcoming season, we will split up the race days for bikes and quads, so they do not race on the same days.

Fab Gears By Al Carr/ Andy Fleck
www.reactive-suspension.com Pity that poor gear. Which one? The one you hammer after crossing the start gate. In most cases we’re talking about second or third depending on what gear you started in. Regardless, as you cross the start gate and flat shift that next gear it takes a beating. First gear itself doesn’t have it nearly as hard unless you are one of those nimrods who has the throttle pinned when he puts it in gear, ouch. Generally speaking though first is engaged with the clutch disengaged and no matter how hard you dump the clutch the gear is already fully engaged. Not so the other gears. When we shift gears, moving the shift lever only performs about 60% of the gear change operation. The shift ratchet mechanism completes the rest by keeping pressure on the gear we have selected and dropping it into engagement when things line up. For anyone who has never seen the inside of a sequential transmission it’s hard to understand how they operate. I find myself having to explain it whenever I do a tranny rebuild. It’s always the same, someone brings in a motor with the story that it keeps jumping out of third, then when I’m done with the job and they see on the invoice that I’ve also billed them for 5th gear it’s “hang on, there was nothing wrong with 5th gear” and here we go. This is a lot easier with visual aids but we’ll do the best we can. In the transmission we have two shafts, the input shaft and the output shaft sometimes referred to as the countershaft. The input shaft has your clutch mounted on one end and is referred to as the input as this is where power is inputted into the transmission, consequently the output shaft is where the power exits the transmission and has the countershaft sprocket mounted on the end. In a four speed trans there are 4 gears on each shaft, 5 in a 5 speed and 6 in a 6 speed. When in gear only one gear on each shaft is actually working all the remaining gears are idle, merely spinning. To accomplish this the gears are mounted to the shafts with one simple rule, any gear that is fixed to its shaft is mated to a gear that is not fixed to its shaft. When we are shifting gears we are sliding gears back and forth on each shaft in a predetermined manner that results in only one gear set being in operation at any given time. Now getting back to that 5th gear 3rd gear invoice thing. As I stated one of the two gears that make up third is not directly attached to the shaft it is mounted on. To engage this gear the gear next to it, 5th, which is directly attached to the shaft is slid over into 3rd locking it to the shaft through its gear dogs and if that isn’t confusing enough 5th gear on the other shaft is not attached to its shaft and is spinning free at this time. We are all familiar with the gear teeth located on the outside circumference of a gear, these are used to transfer power from gear to gear. But on the sides of certain gears in the box there are posts that engage with slots in the gears next to them these are called gear dogs. This allows a free running gear to be locked to the shaft to transfer power. You know I’ve just realized that trying to explain this in words is harder than negotiating middle east peace. For those of you genuinely interested in understanding how a tranny works I will endeavor to keep a unit in the race trailer for show and tell purposes. It will be interesting to see how many people ask me at the races for a demonstration. So I think I’ll finish by covering the types of failures we commonly see in transmissions. The most common is wear to the gear dogs or posts as I mentioned previously. This will commonly manifest itself as jumping out of gear. The edges where the posts and slots engage get rounded and when power is applied they slip out of engagement. There is little you can do to prevent this happening as it is a direct result of the way we shift gears in race conditions, hard and without the clutch. Even under these severe operating conditions this type of failure usually doesn’t occur until after the first season of racing. Gear pitting is what happens to the gear teeth faces. It is caused when the gear teeth are loaded excessively, the failure actually occurs beneath the surface at first and slowly makes its way to the surface where the metal then simply falls away. It is not uncommon to see this on the smaller gears as they are loaded more often but it’s not a rule. Broken gears are usually the result of either a cataclysmic failure like gears getting out of position and engaging more than one gear at a time or simply a gear that wasn’t manufactured properly, usually in the heat treating process. Which brings me to next months article where I will try to cover the manufacture of gears from the forging process right through heat treatment and the benefits of cryogenically treating gears. So till next month, see you at the races.

Posted: 05.18.2005 PICKERINGTON, Ohio (May 18, 2005) -- AMA Pro Racing announced today that the 2005 AMA Motocross Championship Presented by FMF will be telecast on OLN. In making the announcement, John Farris, AMA Pro Racing Vice President of Commercial Development, said OLN will be a great home for AMA Motocross. “OLN is building a strong reputation as a network committed to high quality action sports,” said Farris. “From coverage over the past two years of the AMA Supermoto Championship to such varied programming as the Tour de France and the Dakar Rally, OLN has created a unique niche in sports TV. We’re glad to be associated with the network.” Former AMA Motocross and AMA Supercross champion David Bailey makes his return to the announcer’s booth. “We’re thrilled that David will host our coverage,” said Farris. “His experience as a racer coupled with his overall knowledge of the sport is unparalleled.”
The 2005 AMA Motocross Championship kicks off on Sunday, May 22 with the Hangtown Classic from Sacramento, Calif., and finishes on Sept. 11 at Glen Helen Raceway Park in San Bernardino, Calif. The 12-round series visits some of the most historic motocross venues in the U.S. and adds a new stop on the schedule with the July 24 event in Lakewood, Colo. The 250 class races will generally be telecast on the following Saturday with the 125 class races airing on the Thursday after that. Exceptions will be made in the month of July to accommodate OLN’s Tour de France coverage.
“AMA Motocross is a great addition to OLN’s arsenal of action sports programming,” said Marc Fein, Senior Vice President of Programming and Production. “It’s got all the action, adrenaline and competition OLN viewers crave.”
