Hello Race Fans, As most of you know, I sold MRA to Engle Printing and Publishing in April of 2008, but I continued to work with them through the transition until I said my goodbyes in October of last year. After a bit of soul searching and some downright withdraw symptoms, I made my return around Motorama of this season. I love being at the races, and I love the many great relationships that I’ve built over my lifetime of being involved with this industry and sport, but if there is one thing that I’ve discovered in the last couple of months, it is that it’s time for a true break. I have a few other businesses that I’m involved in. My oldest child is shipping off to the Marine Corps in a few months, and my youngest will be out of high school before I know it. Besides all that, we have to give the new guys a chance to ride on their own. Engle has come a long way in a short time, and with their latest move I’m sure they’ll be in a position to carry on well into the future. Effective immediately, I would like to introduce Chuck Lister as the new editor of

MRA. Some of you already know Chuck, as he is currently with Engle in a sales role. He will add the editor duties of MRA to his responsibilities with the company. He is excited about this new opportunity, as it allows a love from his past to return. During the mid-1980s into the early 1990s, Chuck was a general manager with Raceway Honda in Perris, Calif. Chuck’s dealership was very involved with both motocross and desert racing under his tenure, and they sponsored and did race support for a large group of riders. Chuck also has a photography background, and he is fired up to finally have a reason to put his trusty Nikon back into action. This doesn’t mean you are rid of me for good! I will still be attending and covering occasional races, and I will be working with both Chuck and Engle in the background to help ensure another smooth transition. One of the other things I learned during my break is that I’ll never be able to completely walk away; it’s too much a part of my life. So again I would like to thank you all for your kindness and support over the years, but more importantly I would like to ask for your continued support as we embark on this move. Engle has the ability to keep MRA a truly great publication; after all, you guys deserve it. So please support and suggest anything helpful and watch for MRA in your mailbox each and every month. Remember the Internet is instant, but print lasts forever. With your help, we can keep this tradition alive for years to come. We’ll see you now and then at the track, and thanks for all you do! District 7 Enduro Series Round #5, Delaware Enduro Riders Club, Delaware City, DE. April 26th, 2009 Andrew Tsakanikas Wins the Delaware State Enduro! By Chris Borger, AMA District 7 Enduro Rep.

By Ken Doane The Cow Patty Hare Scramble held on April 19th by Maryland Competition Riders was the fourth race of the 2009 season. This was a much-anticipated race due to the unknown weather conditions before the race: Was it going to be wet or just about perfect for a spring race? Well, once again, the race gods smiled on the course at Boyers Farm. After the previous race at VXCS, a lot of riders looked forward to the combination of fast straight-aways and a large grass section, and Ken Shaffer and his MD Comp crew did not disappoint. After much discussion at previous races, MD Comp added large sections of the pastures to the racecourse. The morning weather was pictureperfect -- a little bit cloudy, but that kept the course from drying out to soon. There was a slight chance of bad weather nearby, but that was much farther to the west. The fields were green with thick, moist grass just ripe for the ripping, and the new course layout was visible in the nearby fields. The start for this race was moved to a new location, mainly to utilize the vast open fields available to Ken Shaffer and his course layout crew. As the morning moved along, it was nice to see that this race was going to have a large turnout compared to the past. I still cannot understand why this track does not have a larger turnout. Anyway, the pits were active with the usual chatter people catching up with the latest bike news, viewing the new course layout, and enjoying the weather. Before you knew it, it was time to go to the start line. Like a mentioned before, the course layout this time was different than last time. At the start of the race we had about a 200foot funnel down to a hard right turn around a large hay bail. Then it was through a short brush section and back out into the large fields where the course was defined by hay bails and course tape. Once we made it through the long switchbacks, we were sent into the woods sections of the course. Many thanks to Ridersville

Cycle for stepping up and providing trophies and contingencies. You can view detailed race results at http:// www.mdcompriders.org, and always look for the latest Hare Scrambles news at ww.amadistrict7.com/ harescrambles/index.html. Our next race is on May 31, 2009, at ECEA South Penn Enduro Riders OXBO.

The 47th annual Delaware State Enduro was held Sunday, April 26, in Delaware City, Del. This was round 5 in the AMA District 7 Enduro Series and the ECEA Series. The event is provided by the Delaware Enduro Riders Club. The DER club has a longstanding reputation of putting on some of the best and most challenging Enduro events in the country, and this year’s event was no exception. The DER club prides itself on providing these epic events year after year, and their club members and families really put forth a huge effort, devoting countless hours of work before, during, and after the event. This year’s Enduro was extremely challenging, having heavy rain earlier in the week making for extra muddy conditions in some areas and unforeseen record high temperatures reaching nearly 100 degrees, in addition to the already challenging course. The course ran 110 ground miles (the longest course in the ECEA) and had an amazing 21 checkpoints along the route. The course consisted of many tough sections, including the famous phragmitus fields along the C and D Canal zone, where the riders encountered the phrag mud, which added an extra 20 to 30 pounds to some of the riders coming through this section. Several areas of the event are at or below sea level, making for extra muddy conditions. Several muddy technical areas were encountered all day long. Some of the mud holes ended the day for many riders. One of the many highlights of the event is the Sluice section, where the riders were challenged with giant boulders and fast running water that resembled the Colorado River rapids, rather than northeast Delaware. The Sluice is a great extreme test section and provides an awesome place for spectators. For years, club Trail Boss Charlie Stapleford, ( the mastermind of the event) has been putting together this course with the real Enduro enthusiast in mind. Charlie is an Enduro legend and a champion rider of five decades. Charlie, along with fellow club members Don Billing and Pete Parlett, lay out some incredible sections of trail, designed to test riding and time keeping skills and humble riders of all classes. There were 280 entries at this year’s event, and 118 riders did not finish, a testimony to the tough course and extreme unseasonable heat. Many riders were caught off guard and not prepared for the hot day, and dozens suffered from dehydration and bikes overheating. Many riders were crawling around on the ground sick at the second gas stop. The riders who stayed hydrated and prepared their bikes seemed to do better overall. There was lots of great racing action in all classes at this year’s event. District 7 rider Andrew Tsakanikas of Frederick, Md., was the Overall Grand Champion of the event, with an awesome score, dropping only 26 points on the day. Andrew rode a fast and furious pace all day, beating out the fastest riders on the East Coast in the most challenging Enduro in the series, riding the Honda CRF 250 from Shenandoah Honda and sponsored by WER Racing. Congratulations to Andrew Tsakanikas for a stellar performance and his third overall win in the 2009 season! Second overall was national rider Andrew Delong of Morgantown, Pa.; third place went to Rich Lafferty, dropping 31 points on the day; followed by big brother Jack Lafferty, Jr.

dropping 40 points on the day. Fifth place overall went to Chase Compton, who dropped 43 points. Seven AA riders finished the event, but all of them took a severe spanking from Tsakanikas, who won by a large four-minute margin. In other action, High point A went to District 7 rider Ken Law, who was also the A-Open class winner. High Point B went to Dan Baldwin, and High Point C went to Michael Cramer. District 7 riders Brian Boyer won the B-Open class, Mike DeMos won the B-Senior class, and Russell Skeet Newlen from GMER won the B-Super Senior class. Enduro hero and the toughest guy in the woods Jack Lafferty Sr. won the Masters class, and then he was taken away for dehydration sickness. The Woman’s class was won by Courtney Compton, with mom Merle coming in second, one minute behind Courtney. Indeed, this was tough race, with the makings of a true Enduro, with nonstop time keeping all day and an endless, extremely challenging trail, all put together by one of the best clubs around. The event was very well organized, given very high marks from the riders, and was held in a great location that provided an awesome Enduro racing format. For many, the DER Enduro is the number one event of the year. As the 2009 Enduro season progresses, we’re beginning to see a new generation of off-road champions emerge from the series, with names like Andrew Tsakanikas, Dane Schonenberg, Jeffery Pasqua, Daniel Stoppi, Jr., Chase Compton, Ben Smith, Joey Giordano, and many more new AA riders. These will be the riders to watch as the 2009 season continues, as they all are top contenders in the series. Special thanks to all the fine people at the DER club for providing another outstanding event. On a final note, we would like to thank our AMA District 7 Enduro Series sponsors, Shenandoah Honda, Matto Cycle, and Moose Racing, for their ongoing support of the 2009 series. Be sure to check the District 7 website for upcoming Enduro and Dual Sport events and for Enduro Series points standings.

President’s Corner D7 President’s Corner

MAMA President’s Corner

Hey Racers!

Let’s get the motocross fix out of the way first. Tucker Rocky/Pete’s Cycle has teamed up to title sponsor the last half of our Gold Series. They’ll be contributing $7,000 worth of merchandise to be given out at each riders’ meeting for the remaining eight events. Riders and spectators will be randomly selected by the promoters at each meeting and be presented their awarded merchandise. A complete listing of merchandise is listed on our website, www.amadistrict7.com. It’s almost impossible to race a Gold Series motocross event and not come home with some type of reward. Whether you’re in the top five, spectating, or racing your butt off, you’ll be eligible for a multitude of awards. Sportsmanship. Webster’s dictionary defines this as “respect for one’s opponent, and graciousness in winning or losing.” We all enjoy the competition. We all enjoy helping each other at the races. The enduro rider is one of a kind. They need to participate all year competitively but also must work an event to be eligible for year-end awards. These riders now have to learn and appreciate what it takes to run an event. There’s track set-up, starting, checkpoints, scoring, and trophy presentation. Each rider now becomes and has to understand what a promoter must accomplish to pull off an event. Every rider can now appreciate how much time and effort goes into every event. He or she must now work a whole day at an event as well as race future events to be a champion. Riders, please take time to talk and converse with all of your promoters. In all disciplines the promoters spend countless hours the night before or the morning of preparing your racecourse for you. There are countless hours of preparing advertisements and lining up sponsors that ultimately puts rewards back to you for your accomplishments. Motocross in the ’70s and ’80s had rubber band starts, and you raced around tires in fields or parking lots. Now we have mega tracks with towers for spectators, heated and air-conditioned showers, and electronic sign-up. Hare scrambles and enduro now race in National Forest that can cover up to 80 miles. We’ve come a long way in the past 40 years. I would like to think that the riders’ respect and compassion toward the sport and its promoters have come as far. Sometimes the younger or newer riders can’t understand or appreciate what advancements our sport has made. They need to be taught to appreciate. Parents, you need to teach your children. There’s one man who has raised the bar when it comes to race and series promotion. All four series that are on this page have benefited in one way or another from his hard work. He has raised the standard to 120% payout for the expert classes in motocross. There are times in motocross and dirt track where payments are only 50%. This isn’t bad or wrong. It usually is dictated by how many riders are at the event, 100 riders versus 500 riders. 100 spectators versus 1,000 spectators will also affect the payout. Promoters have costs of paying their help, insurance, ambulance, AMA sanction fees, mortgage fees, and heavy equipment maintenance. Rod Yentzer has raised the level of promotion to where all riders that finish in the top of their class will receive an award other than a trophy. He has set the level where every other series represented on this page is giving back to the participants. He has drawn from outside the sport as well as from local shops to benefit the racing participants. We have all studied his marketing ways and tried to reproduce them. We’ll continue to watch the sport grow, promoting contingency programs that benefit you, the riders. REMINDER: If you have submitted an application and not received a card…there is a reason. Please contact Hilly Bell at 410-343-1721 or district7membership@comcast.net to find out why and get your card.

It has been an exciting start to the 2009 season. We have had some great turnout resulting in some exciting races. With the paybacks we now offer, the competition has been intense.

This season is moving along so fast! We are already into the Regionals. I have been to 21 Sunday race events this year, and it is just flying by. As I watch the races and the families at the track, I sit back and look at all the time and dedication the raiders put into this sport. As a parent of a racer, I applaud all the parents for their dedication to the kids and the sport. With Mother’s Day behind us and Father’s Day coming, all the kids should thank their parents for spending their hard-earned money and time to take them racing. For the parents, I have spent the last 21 weekends with my son, Chase, and loved every minute of it. It is not about how he did at the race; it is about the time and memories we have. I would not trade that for anything in this world. Now to racing. With three rounds at MDRA in the books, mud racing at Budds and Doublin, and a great dry race at Tomahawk, the points are close in all the classes, and it’s going to be a great season for the racers. The next couple races are June 13-14 at Sleepy Hollow and June 2728 at Pleasure Valley. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the Shoot-Out race at Pleasure Valley on October 17-18, 2009. The MDRA Series needs to defend the title. We need all the MDRA racers to help!

We are just one-fourth of the way into the 2009 season, and the weather has been fairly cooperative. The last race at Delmarva in May provided some difficulties for some of our smaller bikes, but, compared to previous seasons, we have been very fortunate. A key initiative we have undertaken over the last several years is supporting our fallen riders. We continued this effort at our race at Budds Creek in early May. This is a very important and beneficial effort that helps riders from our area that need assistance. Once again, it was very successful, and we look forward to supporting this effort in 2010. Lastly, with daylight savings time changed to earlier in the year, we have been able to run two sets of practices on Saturday interlaced with two sets of motos (Senior Open/Support, Collegeboy/ Schoolboy, Women, and Supersenior Open/Support) as we have done for a couple years now. Sunday is a full day of racing for all the other classes. This has worked very well for the dads because now they can focus on the kids on Sunday. Remember, let’s all have fun and be safe. Don Logan MAMA President

PA State Harescramble Series Evansville MX Park Round # 2 - April 26, 2009 By:

The second round of the PA state series was held at Evansville MX Park. This race gave everyone a little taste of what summer is going to be like. It was an extremely hot day with lots of sun and dust. The day started out with a great battle between Henry Ferreira and Ethan Jaudas in the super mini class. They put on a great show for the whole crowd. In the end, there was

Megan Ego

only a three second difference between them! There are a bunch of District 6 racers that also are racing with the GNCC; this just goes to show how challenging this district really is. Jason Hughes gave me some dirt on the ATV classes, and apparently the dirt played a big role in this race. A lot of the racers had a hard time seeing through all the dust in

86-200 B class start: Jordan Barrent (17J) with the hoelshot, ending up in second behind Ryan Slane (28R).

Chad Shafer got his first win today!

Garret Brownawell (526) and Justin Deutsch (8j) talking about the race, both of whom had excellent races, Brownawell finishing in third only six seconds behind the leader!

the air, and the dust is what cost Hughes the lead. Dan Ketterer came through with the win after battling with Hughes in the Vet class. And congratulations to Chad Shafer, in the B class, who had his first win! But Shafer had to fight for this win because Chad Briggs, who had the holeshot, was only 3 seconds behind him going into the last lap. On another note, the transponder system worked out a lot better this time, and all the kinks are almost worked out. A handful of riders are still not registering as they go through, so we are now going to start to have a tech-checkpoint/inspection. This will most likely be located at the

entrance to the line. Everyone needs to make sure that they go to the techcheckpoint before they go to the line so we can make sure your transponder is working before the race starts. Also, I need to start meeting all of you racers out there! Look for me out there and introduce yourself and let me know about your race or any other good races you saw that day. It would be nice to start meeting some more people that I see every weekend! Be sure to check out all the race results at www.D6harescrambles.com.

Jason Hughes is a long-time supporter of D6 Hare Scramble racing.

Budds Creek April 25-26, 2009 By: Ryan Henderson Designs www.rhdesigns95s.smugmug.com

We are back at Budds for another MAMA race. The heat kicked in and set us up for a sunny weekend of racing. The track seemed to have a different consistency than usual and added to the numerous crashes that seemed to happen one after another. Many riders became victim to the ruts, as the ground seemed to swallow their front ends as they tried to cross. The women’s class had a few tangles that put some of the riders on the ground. One rider that had no trouble in that class would be a young lady named Amanda Brown riding #293. Amanda has been consistent this season and, between Seaford and Budds, unbeatable. The only thing that she hasn’t been able to tackle is a large double at Budds known as “Big Gulp.” She’s almost there. Michael Groves #125 pulled the holeshot in the first moto of Collegeboy with a major save going into the first turn. He held the lead for a few turns before Zach Miller #773 took the lead and walked away with it. The second moto resembled the first, with TJ Irvin #77 getting the jump out of the gate, but Zach Miller worked even faster than he did in the first moto and took the holeshot and ran (I guess having a full tank of gas proves to work better, right Zach?). TJ dropped back to third behind Miller and Groves, where he would have to work hard to advance past Groves. He ended up taking the spot away and came home with a second.

DMX ATV April 25-26, 2009 By: Michael Salerno RoxstarImages.com

Dale Raven looks for faster lines as he gaps the rest of the field.

It was a perfect day for racing for the second round of the District 6 Ultimate Quad Series held at the Dutchman Motocross Park facility in Pine Grove, PA. Temps reached the mid 80s as practice ended. For this year, DMX has moved all its motocross races to the main track. For the Pro-Am and top “B” riders, this really made their day due to the demanding course with sweet rhythm sections, a table top triple and a camel back. Everyone else really had to dig deep to come out on top on this highly technical course. On a track like this, you would think the Pro-Am guys would be the stars, but the youth riders really showed they loved a challenging track by blitzing the whoops, hitting doubles and clearing table tops. Top racers in their respective classes like Travis Wotring, Kyle Frick, and Dale Raven put on a show for the bleacher-packed fans by airing out multiple jumps and holding the throttle wide open through the turns. In the 50cc Prod 6-8, #117 of Kyle Frick has come on strong this year but has a battle on his hand with Dale Raven hot on his heels, and the #6 of Raven is also leading

the 50cc limited 4-6 by going 1-1 for the day. Wotring, now running three classes, 70cc Prod, Sr. Mini, and 90cc 2str/125cc 4str, must have trained hard this off-season by taking four moto wins and now leads in all classes. Dylan Tremellen on his #940 East Coast ATV 300ex has one heck of a streak started for himself this season: four motos raced, four motos won. This young gun has been hard on the gas since the drop of the gate, bombing the downhill into the valley at Evansville and now crushing the table top triple at DMX. Even though the youth riders stole the show, there was no disappointment to be had when the big guys took to the track. New to the top spot in the +25 class was James Henry, Action Motorsports Suzuki LT-R450. The “B” class had another great showing and so was split once again. Top 10 riders from each gate were put in the main, and the rest were sent to Consi. Whether you made to the main or not, each point they got was earned by

gutting it out charging hard toward the finish. Coming out on top was Tyler Dommel on the Burgard Honda, followed by Robert Busa and the #21 of Nick Kohn. “C” also had two gates, but Sammel Cambell from Bath, PA, was able to go 1-2 to take the overall. “A” and Pro- Am classes had Trevor Borger sweeping both classes and taking the overall wins in a dominating fashion. The third round heads east to Englishtown, New Jersey, and the home of Raceway Park on May 2 and 3. This track is very unique to District 6 due to its sandy soil, which makes for a very rough and whooped out track. We look for a lot more heart-pounding ATV racing as the District 6 Ultimate Quad Series continues.

Jake Szigeti was able to battle back from this first turn wreck to a fourth overall.

Keep the throttle pinned!!! Michael Salerno RoxstarImages.com Frick knows how to make ATVs fly.

Raceway Park

Englishtown, NJ - April 25-26, 2009 by Scott Lukaitis

With temperatures as hot as the competition, nearly 1,000 riders showed up at Old Bridge Township’s Raceway Park the weekend of April 25th and 26th. Riders from as far away as Arizona and Canada came to this popular New Jersey racetrack to start their chase to Tennessee and the Amateur National Championships. The first step is the area qualifier, and Raceway Park was the place to be. Temperatures in the 90s and rough track conditions separated those who trained this off-season and those who did not. Saturday was for the stock class racing, while Sunday’s racing was for modified and vet class action. Saturday’s mini bike racing action saw Jay, Vermont, resident Dakota Alix take both motos on his way to the Supermini 2 class victory while Port Jervis, New York’s Jared Jennings did the same, taking the 85cc 9-11 stock class overall. Team Green’s Lowell Spangler set the tone for an interesting march to a national championship by qualifying first out of the 450A class. Another rider

Lowell Spangler was on fire in the expert divisions.

looks like a favorite heading into the August classic. Suzuki-mounted Aaron Lampi was a double class winner in the 250 and 450 C classes, while Asbury, New Jersey’s Joey Peters was a double class winner in both Schoolboy 1 and Schoolboy 2. Raceway Park’s elder statesman Barry Carsten showed he still has it by winning both the 35 and 40 + senior classes aboard his Bromley’s Suzuki. The well-liked Bayville, New Jersey, resident

may add a national championship to his impressive resume this August in Tennessee. For please

The next step for these riders is the regional championship in June and then on to Tennessee this August in hopes of National Championship glory. Good luck to all.

Sunday’s racing saw more domination from Spangler and Desiderio. Both riders went a perfect 4 for 4, with Desiderio winning both the 250 B Modified and Four Stroke Class and Spangler taking the 250A/Pro Sport and 450 A/Pro Sport classes. The Pro Sport classes are generally considered the next step to a career in professional racing, and Spangler

setting a tone for big things in August was Washington New Jersey’s Nick Desiderio. The Shift Racing-backed Desiderio was back at his home track and showed the speed that served him well during his mini bike days. Desiderio’s 4-1 scores in the 450B Stock class gave him the overall, while 2-1 scores in the 250B Stock class was good for that overall.

Round #2 - April 25-26, 2009 By Jim Bull Photo.com Round # 2 of the 2009 MDRA Series landed at Tomahawk MX in the foothills of West Virginia. Nonetheless, the faithful came to race, and the day went off without a hitch. The 250 B group was the first off the line today and is shaping up to be some of the best racing action of the year. Leonard Rehatchek wins Open A and the dash for cash. Blue Comet staff was all along the track to help out everyone who fell. They also had a great awards ceremony, giving trophies all the way to 17th place! One guy that was far from 17th place was Leonard Rehatchek. He was flying around the track on this Saturday race and won the 201-open A class by almost 13 minutes! He was also the winner of the overall and the Dash for Cash. The Dash for Cash was an event that the club held after the race was over. It was a onelap dash for the finish line to win some extra money. Anyone who raced could sign up, and it was just for some fun and money!

Kody Roloson, winner of the Open B class Transponder update! We have gotten 99% of the problems worked out now with the tech-checkpoint. Everyone went through and got theirs checked, and if there were any problems we fixed them before they got on the track. Everyone just needs to make sure they are going to the checkpoint before they go to the line, especially the quads at the next race because you guys weren’t here for this one, and everything will continue to go smoothly. Please log on to www.D6harescrambles. com to view results from this event.

Mike Ego, winner of the Super Senior It was a change of scenery at the Blue Comet race in Skippack. This is a track that is different then what most guys are used to racing on. It is a very small and tight track that racers seem to have a lot of fun on. One thing that Blue Comet does best is hospitality. The staff that they have is extremely nice and helpful with everyone. They had great food and music playing all day; it was an awesome atmosphere. Open C class start: Chad Salter with the holeshot who ended up getting second to Benjamin Glisson.

Lake or race track? Check out the next issue of MRA for the answer.

The 2009 District 6 Ultimate Quad Series came to Raceway Park at Englishtown, NJ… and so did the rain! Saturday was a great day for practice. Many riders took advantage of the day to dial their suspensions in on a very fast whooped-out course. Rain in the morning ended by the start of practice, which made the track very tacky and had some very fast racing lines develop. Sunday … well, that was the total opposite. Light to intermediate rains graced the track all day, which forced a 1 moto format. Racers battled the weather and the roost for valuable points to either gain on the leaders or to put some distance on the rest of the pack. At the riders’ meeting, riders were asking for as many laps as they could get. 50cc classes received six laps on a shortened track. But as the first few classes left the gates, the clouds would unleash the heavier rains. Gate picks and a quick reaction time were very crucial for getting good starts. The Elevator made it tough because of the huge pools of water in between the doubles. “C” class points leader Sam Campbell knows you don’t win championships in conditions like this, but you sure as heck can lose them. A solid third for the #323, but the win went to Hayes Dangerfield, making the hike from Elkton, MD. Second went to #48 Matthew Shroyer. Unfortunately for Dylan Tremellen, his perfect season that started back in February at Motorama has come to an end. A smart ride earned a second place just behind the #66 of Jeffery Swartz. In Open “A,” a good start does not always guarantee a moto win. Adam Sinz pulled a sizeable lead right out of the gate, but he was overtaken by Austin Murphy and Trevor Borger.

Borger went on to win by capitalizing on a mistake by Murphy. Borger couldn’t duplicate his charge like he did earlier in the “A” class. In Pro-Am, Joseph Masta was able to edge

Dale Raven charges through the whoops toward one of his two wins for the day.

out the #23c of Christopher Clayton and the #8 of Austin Murphy. Open “B” had Robert McGhee taking the win over the #21 of Nick Kohn and Burguard Cycles’ Landon Herbst. In College Boy, Landon had his revenge and was able to come out on top and take the win from Marc Burke and Robert McGhee. If the Elevator was tough for the big guys to make it up, it was almost impossible for the little guys! The E-Town crew did an excellent job, even with the muddy mess, getting everyone in the gate to keep it going. In 90cc CVT Prod., the #719 of Niki Major beat out Eric Greene and Erik Callan. Her brother, Nicholas Major, had the same success in the Sr. Mini Class. Dale Raven will not be denied this year, whether it’s in dusty or muddy conditions. He is on the gas no matter what. Two more overall wins for the super fast #6 in the 50cc Prod CVT and Stk. Limited. Next Round of the 2009 District 6 Ultimate Quad Series heads to Miles Mountain in upstate Pennsylvania on May 10.

Gauge Keith was just warming up for his big weekend with wins in all 50cc 4-6 and 50cc Oil 4-8 events. As the dust settled on the motocross track, things were picking up on the oval track as riders warmed up for a night of flat track racing. Sixty-seven riders signed up for 19 classes held in 15 races. Top riders for

The 40th running of the BCTRA Blue/Gray MX Weekend was held at DMP in Seaford, DE, the weekend of May 2 and 3. Events started Saturday morning with 148 riders signing up for the Blue/ Gray MX race with 11 motos consisting of 31 different classes. The weather was cooperative with the weekend

theme and included gray skies while the rain held off all day. With temperatures in the lows 50s and overcast skies, the start of an event-filled weekend was underway. Some of the top riders of the Blue/Gray race included Steven Wilson Jr., who took first in all four motos in 250A and Open A. Dylan Blettner

Saturday night action who won all motos in more than one class were Brandon Price in 65 7-11 and 85 7-11 and Donald Muller on Open A and Stock Frame 450 and up. Gauge Keith was only entered in one event but proved he was just as capable on the flat track as the motocross track with his win in 50 Chain. Motocross riders with a 50cc engine were invited to try out theirs skills on the flat track using knobby tires. Some fared well, and others knew flat track was not for them, but congratulations to those who stood up to the challenge. The rain held off until the last race was over, and storms hit the area throughout the night. Sunday’s Gold Series race was held under cloudy skies with scattered showers

throughout the day. A little rain and mud were no reason for over 280 riders to stay away as 40 classes were combined into 20 motos. The track stayed wet but not slick, and riders were asked after the first set of motos if they wanted to cancel the rest of the day. The majority ruled, and it was a let’s go racing day. Some top winners on Sunday were Dylan Blettner, who continued

his streak from Saturday to again take all motos in 85B 12-15 and Supermini. Charles Vane Jr. took all in 250C and Open C, and Amanda Brown in Girls 9-15 and Women 12+. In Quad action, Joseph Elliot took everything in Quad A and Quad 30+. Gauge Keith continued his weekend winning streak and took all motos in 50 4-6 and 50 Oil 4-8.

Doublin Gap MX Pa9rk Round #3 - May 2-3, 200 By Jim Bull Photo.com

Cook has been cruising as of late, winning Open A and Four Stroke.

Josh Villarreal takes the win in 250 C.

Round # 3 of the MDRA Race Series reminded us all of that old but classic tune… “Rain, Rain, Go Away”! Saturday’s weather was perfect for the practice day, and once again those weather people made just a teeney weeney little mistake on the overnight forecast. Clear skies they said, but what they really meant was that it was going to rain - a lot. So at the riders’ meeting, the decision was made to give this day one round of motos, then head on home. It rained for most of the day, and the track was in pretty bad shape. Everyone made the best of it, and that’s exactly what we all did. Points were awarded on the individual moto scores, and we all called it a day to wait for greener pastures and the next round, hoping that the rain and the mud might one day go away. You can check out the results here and log on to www.jimbullphoto. com to view all of the race images.

Cameron Davis from Apollo, PA, wins two 50cc classes.

Budds Creek Motocross May 9-10, 2009 By RPM Graphics.net

We were blessed with a good combination of weather, track conditions and racing for this Mother’s Day weekend. MAMA visited Budd’s Creek for round #4 of the 2009 season. Track crews did a phenomenal job of making the track very usable despite a week’s worth of rain leading up to the weekend. In Saturday’s racing action, Amanda Brown continued to show her dominance in the women’s class. In moto 1, Kacey Curtis jumped out to an early lead and kept if for two laps. Amanda wrestled it away and held on for the win, with Kacey staying within striking distance. Amanda got the holeshot in moto 2 and led wire to wire. That’s 8 wins in 8 motos, which equals 4 overalls and the points lead for Miss Brown. Kacey also put in a very solid performance on Sunday in both Super Mini and Mini Women Open. Josh Stein took the overall in College Boy, and Scott Clark took the win in School Boy 2 Stroke. Sunday’s track was much drier and faster, and a full gate of 250C riders showed their stuff. Last year’s top 10 C riders all advanced to B, which opened the door for some new faces. Names like White, Reynolds, Foley and Brown have already notched moto wins. Charlotte Hall’s Cody Heath has control of the points lead with multiple moto wins and an overall. Cody also holds the points lead in Open C. The young Mr. Heath won moto #1 of both 250C and Open-C. The second round of motos was not too kind to him, as he got caught up in the first turn carnage and log jams at the start of both motos. Look for Cody to stay in the championship hunt all season, as this kid knows how to go fast at every track. Other notable winners were Greg Hoffman in Super Mini, Alexander Frye in Junior Mini and David Callihan 250A. This weekend also marked the Annual MidAtlantic Fallen Riders Foundation event. This year, in lieu of the relay race, MAMA donated a portion of every entry fee to the foundation. MAMA’s own Darius Glover was on hand to lead the parade laps and had a host of riders along for the ride. A portion of this year’s proceeds will go to Mike Bowman, who was injured at Budd’s Creek a few weeks back. MAMA will be at the Delmarva Motorsports Park next weekend for some fun in the sand. Let’s hope for a continuation of the good weather. See you at the races. good experience on this weekend. Point being, it’s hard to please everybody all of the time; we’re all looking for something different. We all know it’s expensive, we all know it’s going to be a long day, and we all know that track conditions will change from one venue to the next and even sometimes throughout the day. Some say it was a good day, and some say a bad day, maybe even a really bad day. I guess the way I look at it, any day spent riding your bike should be a thankful day.

Round # 3 of the 2009 Ultimate MX Series landed at the Dutchmen MX Park in Pine Grove, PA. I guess if you are a reader of the D6MX message board, there’s not much more that can be said about this day. We all have our own expectations and goals as to what a race day should bring. Some are in it for the local competition and to participate in a local race series. Then there are some who are very serious about it and are chasing a national championship. Favorite Racer: Chad Reed

Anybody you would like to thank: God, all my sponsors, and my Mom and Dad.

Hobbies: Racing motorcycles is all I do. What was your first bike: Yamaha PW 50 How old were you: 4 Do you remember your first race: No Past championships / accomplishments: 2008 MDRA Champion – 250 A and Open A Going 12 for 12 at Motorama Numerous wins over my 13 years of racing What are your future goals: I want to repeat my MDRA Championships and finish in the top 10 at Loretta Lynn’s in the 250 A Class. I want to then turn Pro and someday win a championship.

Just a day prior to this interview, Broc had a small get-off while practicing, and he fractured his collarbone. After talking with the doctor and his trainer, he feels confident that he will be able to return to racing in two weeks time. The next round of the MDRA Series falls on the weekend of June 13-14, and the NE Regional is the following week, so Broc should be ready to go. I first saw Broc ride when he was in the 65cc divisions, and I knew then that this kid had a special talent. He works hard and has a great attitude and can just plain get it done. I was at Motorama the year he won 12 out of 12 motos, and believe me, it wasn’t like he was the only fast kid there. I wish him and his family the best, and I’m betting that he will go far. Keep an eye on the #111 Schmelyun; who knows where his dreams and hard work will take him?

Happy Rambler MC

MDRA Round #4 - May 16-17, 2009 By Edward Brown Photo.com Round # 4 of the MDRA Series took place at the Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club in Hanover, PA, in mid May. It was a nice day for racing, with mild temps and clear skies. The weekend started off on a bit of a soggy note, but by the time the gate dropped for the first set of motos, things were looking pretty good. For this event, the crew at Ramblers made some changes on the back section of their course: nothing major, a few direction changes and a new whoop section gave the racers something new to contemplate. They also added a new vendor row area and a new entrance area for parking. The club members at Happy asked me to thank all of the MDRA sponsors and racers for making this series such a success and wanted to send a special shout-out to Drew from DEF Performance for his devotion to the club and all of the racers on race day. I don’t know what it is about this season; it just seems to me that everyone has stepped up their game. It’s some of the best racing I’ve seen in years, and it’s across the board. Trust me, I go to a lot of races every year, and I spend a lot of hours on the track watching the action. 2009 has been second to none, and I’d like to thank you all for that. Your dedication and determination makes it all worthwhile. I salute the racers; keep up the good work, and we’ll see you at the next round.

rts Delmarva Motorspo 2009 Round #5 - May 16-17, By: PJ Timberman

Race 5 of the MAMA 2009 season was held at Delmarva Motorsports Park in Seaford, DE, the weekend of May 16 and 17. The forecast for Saturday was calling for cloudy skies, but it turned out to be a beautiful sunny day with the temperatures hovering in the 70s. Five motos were run twice, with practice making up the remainder of the day. After the first round of practice, riders took to the track for the first of seven classes combined into five motos, with Claude Willett #161 taking all races in Senior Open and Super Senior Open, while Eugene Kaczka #17 won all four motos in Senior Support and Super Senior Support. Joshua Stein #177 won both races in Collegeboy, and Amanda Brown #293 took both motos in the Women’s class. Scott Clark #442 finished off the day’s events by finishing first in both of the Schoolboy 1216 motos. Rain hit the area Saturday night, and practice started Sunday morning with a steady rain. Makeshift raincoats were fashioned out of whatever plastic could be found. The rain continued throughout the day, making the track slippery and difficult, especially for the smaller bikes. After 15 motos, DMP staff scraped the mud off of the track as best as possible considering the weather conditions, and MAMA rearranged the running order so the 50cc riders could have a chance to try to maneuver around the track before the mud got too deep, stranding the young riders and clogging the chains. Parents and supporters were on hand to help the riders with the turns and spills. Knobby tires caked with mud made them look like slicks, and some younger riders needed a little push to get them up the larger hills. Scott Clark #442 had a big weekend, winning 7 out of 10 motos over the two-day event. Clark finished first in both Schoolboy 1216 motos on Saturday and finished an overall second in Collegeboy 14-24 with a third- and

second-place finish. Clark proved on Sunday that the track conditions were not a problem to him by winning all Open B and Schoolboy 14-16 motos and also taking a second- and first-place finish in 250B, giving him an overall first for the class.

Amanda Brown #293 pulled in all wins in Women’s on Saturday and Mini Women’s Open 7-15 on Sunday. Coty Schock #119 took a spill in a turn, lost a few positions, but still came back to take all Junior Mini and 80A 9-11 motos. Zachary Miller #773 also won all motos in more than one class by taking 250A and Open A. Riders who won both motos in one class are Dunovan Ivory #7, 50A; Jeremy “Dean” Caudill #4 in 50B; Dylan Kufaiti #7, 250D; Charles Wernig #31, 80A 12-15; Nicholas Carrusa #180, 80B 9-11; Eric Tinker #199, 80C 9-11; Jake Willoughby # 151, Open C; Kyle Henderson #449, 60B; and Robert Stubbs #318 in 60C. A great effort was made by all, and Mother Nature did not get the best of the MAMA riders. Congratulations to all the riders for having the determination to stick it out and a special “thumbs up” to the 50cc riders for their effort. Thanks to all the flaggers, EMTs, and everyone who toughed it out in the rain and mud all day to support the riders and the MAMA organization. better conditions for the two wheelers. Quad B kicked off the day with Nick Gadleta grabbing the checkered flag in motos one and two. Quad C was 17 riders strong, the biggest quad class of the day. Brandon Hoffman went 3rd and 1st and went home the overall winner. Josh Rogers was two for two and grabbed second, while Ryan Cochran swapped places with Hoffman in moto one and two for third. 250 A was the first bike moto, and they came around turn one with a purpose. Only six riders were in this class, but you could sure feel the riding of these racers. Michael Foor got his bike flat off of the step up double

Mike Farmer went 3-3 in the 40+ Senior A class and grabbed the holeshot award and the overall for the 50+ class.

“Lets hope the rain holds off,” hollers Chuck Carruthers as he motors by during his refereeing duties at Round 5 of the District 7 Gold Series. Not only did the rain hold off at Rocket Raceway in Three Springs, Pa., the clouds stayed away and the sun came out and provided a great day of racing. Camp Hill Yamaha, Bedford Motorsports, Moto Express, District 7 and Moose Racing made Round 5 exciting by offering holeshot awards for seven classes, a pair of moose riding pants, and the first-class race fee free of charge for the women’s class, and other prizes. Rocket Raceway switched things up a bit by letting all the Quad classes go first before letting the bikes loose. This would allow the quads to race first instead of last and keep the track in

why he currently is the points leader in all three of his 2009 Gold Series Classes. Nicholas Ferrell had the throttle wide open this weekend and never let off once. The only 80cc rider to make the uphill double, Ferrell went one for one in the 85cc 12-15 class and the Supermini 12-16. Nicholas also ran the Collegeboy 12-16 class, where he was 2nd overall with a two-two in each moto. Nathanael Lockhart rode his KX 65 to a one-one finish in the 65cc 7-9 class. Another Lockhart also went one for one. Phillp Lockhart took the overall win in 85cc 9-11 class as well as the holeshot award for that class. The 50 classes rode a separate track at Rocket. Jake Colson was number one in the 51cc 4-6 class. Braxton Mitchell was one-one in the 51cc oilinjected class, and Logan Rummel was two for one and took the overall in the 51cc Sr.78. Congratulations to Mike Farmer in the 50+ class, Josh Stein in the 250 A, and Stewart Smith in the Vet B class for grabbing the coveted holeshot awards in their motos. Shelly Carlton runs a good show in the hills of Three Springs, and this weekend proved to be no different. Everything ran smoothly, the weather cooperated, and the racing was great for Round 5 of the 2009 District 7 Gold Series.
