Motorcycle Racing Action

Hello Race Fans Happy June, everybody. As I sit here at my desk writing this letter, I’m just wondering what this upcoming month will bring. The rains have continued through May, and as much as we dislike that, we should certainly count our blessings. Yes we’ve had to race in some mud and clean our bikes, gear and equipment week after week, but at least we haven’t been devastated by tornadoes or swept away in a flood. The spring of 2011 will certainly be one to remember, and as we roll into the beginning of summer I for one definitely hope things will begin to turn around. June kicks off the unofficial summertime season, the AMA Motocross Nationals here in the East and tons more great racing action for all our local series. Everyone seems to be holding their own, and many of our motocross series are approaching the halfway mark. Even with the numbers a little light, I’ve seen some of the best racing I have in years. It seems many have bumped up a bike size or a division this year, and that always makes for some great bar banging action. You have many options the next month or so, whether racing or watching. We just covered a local GNCC race the last weekend of May, and June brings two motocross nationals

to the area. We also have a National Trials event at Rausch Creek in June and a National Harescramble and Enduro in the month of July. So If you like to watch the pros, now certainly is the time. If you’re just into racing, then check out the schedules here in our pages then head on out to the track. Things are heating up, and the points you earn now will definitely make a difference toward the end of your chosen series. Especially while your buddy is sitting in a lawn chair somewhere watching somebody else, get it done. On another topic, I’d personally like to thank you all for your support of both me and MRA. I felt a little rusty coming back late last fall, and I had asked you all for your patience while I got my legs back under me. I am now in production of my sixth issue and get the feeling that I’m back in the groove. I get a lot of joy out of bringing you the news, and there’s no better feeling for me than to show up at the track with a new edition and have you all standing in line waiting to get your new copy. Thanks for reading and thanks for the support. If you see something we’re missing, please speak up because we do it all for you. Again, support the advertisers and promoters in our pages, and we’ll see you at the track.

Derek Hersh, Roy Miller and last year’s track champion Ken Yoder rounded out the top five. Majeski was also crowned series champion for his efforts. Next up were the awards for the Delaware Dirt Track Championship Series. Kyle McGrane topped everybody with three class wins. McGrane won the 85, 125 and 250 Sportsman classes. Blue Diamond MX D7 Gold Series April 17, 2011 • By: Paul J Freeman The second round of the 2011 D7 Gold series got off to a muddy start after several days of steady rain had fallen on the Blue Diamond MX facility. Saturday was the worst, with periods of heavy rain that would often ease up for a bit only to start falling heavily again. Not surprisingly, Saturday’s practice was cancelled, and racers that were home anxiously checking the forecast learned that Sunday was expected to bring windy, warm and sunny conditions. That news kept racers’ hopes up; however, the message on the BD track phone revealed the final call to race would not be made until 6:30 a.m. Sunday. Fortunately, the rain had stopped during the night, and the BD staff made the call - the race was on! The BD crew did an awesome job getting the track back into shape, and after two practice sessions, it was time to moto. Race 1 combined the 25+, 35+A, and 250A classes. When the gate fell for moto 1, 35+A Suzuki rider Wade Blevins (#18x) nailed the holeshot, followed by 250A rider Andrew Benson (#191) on his YZ250 two stroke on the inside with Suzuki-mounted Steve Lewis Jr. (#310) on the outside and Kaw racer Justin Kidd (#3) in tow. Benson had his YZ250 pinned as he worked it through the muddy sections of the track and took over the lead by lap two while being chased by Blevins, Kidd, and Lewis. Moto 2 was a copy of moto 1 with the 4 stroke mounted Blevins grabbing the holeshot again, only to be passed by Benson halfway through lap one. The finishing order was the same, with the exception of Lewis, who had some difficulties and DNF’ed the 2nd moto. Race 2 combined the 65cc 7-9, 10-11, and 65cc 7-9, 10-11 beginner classes. In 65cc 7-9 racing action, Kyle Savvas (#5) used plenty of body English to keep his KTM tracking straight in the muddy conditions of moto 1. However, the mud would get the best of him on the next lap as a thrown chain ended his moto early. He ended

up finishing 2 - 2 for the day behind KTM mounted Jacob Gast (#3) Race 3 combined the college boy 14-24 and schoolboy 12-16 2stk classes, with #77 T Irvin going 1 - 1 ahead of #101 Brandon Langley in college boy, followed by #10 Ryan Dragunas as the lone racer in schoolboy. All were Kawasaki mounted. Race 4 combined the 85cc classes of 9-11, & 12-15, and beginner 9-11, & 12-15. #116 Gage Solis went 1 -1 for the day in 85 9-11, followed by Henry Scheetz Jr., who went 2 - 2. Mathew Cornish would use 1 - 2 moto scores to take the overall in the 85 12-15, and second place went to Austin Ricketts with a 4 - 1 score. Hunter Goydan went 2 -3 for third, followed by Chris Ford, carding 4th overall. Race 5 combined the 50+ class & women with Yamahamounted James Vari having a solid day using 1 - 1 moto finishes to take the overall followed by Honda rider Wayne Sody (5 - 2), with third overall going to Raymond Scocco also on a Honda. Race 6 had the 250C, and Vet 30+ C racers going at it. #48 Andy Leforte went 1 - 1 in 250C, and #60 Sean Simmons did the same in the Vet 30+ class. Race 7 had the Junior and Super mini riders going at it, with Henry Sheetz once again finishing 2 -2 behind the #116 Suzuki mounted Gage Solis in Junior Mini, with #3 Jake Gast rounding out the top three spots. Super Mini rider Matt Cornish on his #6 Honda used steady 1 -1 scores to finish on top of the podium ahead of #3f KTM rider Chris Ford. Race 8 saw the Open A, Vet 30+A, Sr. 40+A and B mixing it up. Race 9 saw the Open C class finishing up the race order for the day. Once again, #48 Andrew Leforte carded 1 -1 scores like he did in the 250C race to end the day with four moto wins in the respective classes.

Doublin Gap MX Park MDRA 7 – Round #4 May 1, 2011 By: Jim Bull – MRA I was pretty excited when I woke up in Lancaster County on that Sunday morning in early May. For once the sun was shining, and I was thinking about leaving my hoody at home and grabbing some suntan lotion as I headed out the door on my way to the racetrack. Little did I know that first glances can be deceiving? I wasn’t even an hour from home when the clouds started moving in, and as I approached the track those first few drops of rain where ricocheting off my windshield, and I knew then that it was going to be another one of those days. It’s been the story here in the spring of 2011 -rain, rain and then some more rain. Fortunately, we have been dodging the bullet on Sunday, but that was not to be the case for this 4th round of the MDRA 7 Series. Saturday offered a bright, sunny practice day for the racers of the MDRA, but by Sunday early afternoon the rain started to fall, and the track got slicker as each moto clicked off. Till the end of the first set, the Yentzers decided to pull the plug and call it a one moto day for all except the 250 C class, where qualifiers were necessary to determine the day’s champion. Contingencies were awarded from Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha, and as always gas cards and free classes were given away. Even with the weather, close to 500 entries were recorded for the day. Please check the results here, and the current point standings can be found at www. mdramxracing.com. The MDRA 7 Series will land at Happy Ramblers on June 11-12 and then head on out to Pleasure Valley on June 25-26. We’ll see you then.

MRA Tests

2011 Pitster Pro XTR 230 SC

The Pitster was able to handle this terrain with ease.

By: Jim Bull In this day and age of everything being more, we thought we would go out and look for something a little less. Not lesser in quality, but a little shorter in the saddle and a lot more affordable than many others. I’ve been keeping my eye on one of my local accounts and a new product line that they picked up a year or so ago. The Pitster line wasn’t new to me, but more so one of the models in the lineup that kept catching my attention every month when I would visit. Pitster Pro has been on our local Pit Bike race scene for quite a number of years now here in central PA, but what I kept noticing was a mid-size play bike sitting in line with all of the souped-up mini racers. Now as I get older and somewhat a little less aggressive, I’ve been thinking about doing some trail riding again but wishing that I wouldn’t need to dump 6 G’s on a bike and have to carry a mini step ladder around to mount up every time I took a break. So the last time I stopped around I asked the shop owner if there was any way we could get a chance to try that baby out. Squeak says, “Sure, I have one I’ve been riding at my camp instead of my race bike, and we can go ride whenever you want.” This kind of took me aback because I was talking with a Senior Expert racer that had been riding all his life, and I knew what kind of hardware he had sitting at home at his disposal. This really piqued my curiosity, so we set a date and met at one of our secret testing facilities right in the heart of Lancaster County. As I dusted off my Alpine Stars that day, I really didn’t get my hopes up a lot. After all, it was just a little four stroke trail bike made by another one of those startup American companies that you hoped would succeed but really wasn’t sure if they could or not. After all, look at the ones that have come before. We met up that afternoon, and Squeak unloaded his KTM and said, “Here, the Pitster’s yours for the day.” As I easily swung my leg over the low 35-inch seat height, I went for the kick starter, and before I found it I noticed the little yellow button on the handlebars that said start. Things were really going my way so far, easy to get on and a breeze to start. Great for a 40-something guy like me or even that 14-yearold just getting started out. The bike fired right up, and off we headed for the woods. What a dream! It had been a while since I put any time in, but this bike was light and nimble and had great acceleration too. We were riding some tight single track, and I felt like I could have ridden this bike all day long without getting tired. I was beginning to see why this American/Chinese Hybrid was the

Bike Model: 2011 XTR 230 SC MSRP:

Whether you’re just starting out or a seasoned pro, this bike works well. ride of choice for my local dealer friend. After playing around in the woods for about an hour, we headed out into so open riding, and the bike held its own against the mighty orange machine. Another thing that really got my attention was the stopping power of the disc brakes - front and rear - and the fully adjustable rear shock. The inverted front forks were a little stiff, but Pitster has a simple fix of going to heavier fork oil from stock in a lesser quantity. Everything from the polished hubs to the 2.1 gallon fuel capacity seemed to be well thought out. This bike will go all day on a tank of gas and bring you home feeling like a champ. The best part about it is less; remember, we were looking for less when we started this journey. The best part is you get all this in a fun, reliable package for a suggested retail price of just $2199.00. Pitster Pro is made mostly in Utah with a well-tested Chinese power train. One of many stream crossings

Blue Comet MC – Photo Gallery D6 Hare Scramble May 7, 2011 By: JC Benson

Letting you know your position

If you’d like to get into racing hare scrambles, then look no farther than Blue Comet Motorcycle Club. They have a long, rich racing history that started way back in the day with short track racing. A few years ago they made the move into the world of hare scrambles with the right attitude. Before starting, they talked to many tracks and riders for their input on the best course layout with limited acreage. What they came up with is a tight, wooded area with plenty of stream crossings. So if you think you are ready for their course, remember that you ride for one hour if you’re a youth rider and two hours for adults - this course can wear you out. So come out and enjoy the fun that Blue Comet’s course has to offer and get your feet wet. Their next event will be in October, so watch the pages of MRA for all the details. I’d like to give a big thank you to Blue Comet Motorcycle Club and their members for the fun time I had at their event.

Bill Carling and Zach Tussel get cozy in Open B racing action.

MDRA 6 at Sleepy Hollow May 7 – 8, 2011 • By: John Sherer Sunday, May 8, was not only Mother’s day, but also the third round of the MDRA 6 Series hosted by Sleepy Hollow and sponsored by Ephrata Cycle and Sports. The rider turnout numbers were a little light in every class, but the racing was furious from the 50s right through the Vet classes. For this round, the racers were also treated to some new track configurations. A tabletop was put in just after turn two instead of the big double. The tabletop made for safer and better racing, and a rhythm section was incorporated in the section where the old starting gate used to be. Most of the riders I talked with seemed to like the tabletop but were challenged by the rhythm section. The 50 (4-6) racing was close right out of the gate, with some of the best action being found mid-pack as Ryan Canaguier (11) and Kyle Schlemmer (11x) dueled with each other. At the end, Canaguier took the fifth position in the moto and finished fifth overall in class. In the 50 (7-8) division Gage Stine (10) and Deegan Harper (47) filled the number one and two slots, and racing behind them were Josh Hoover and Dominic Amilcare dicing it out for third and fourth. Hoover raced hard but just could not get past the top three but gave the crowd along spectator row some good action to watch. Hoover finished the day fourth overall. In College Boy, the racing action was elbow to elbow with front runners Zach Tussel, Kyle Sidel and Nick Desiderio running fast and hard all four laps, and all finished in the top three for the afternoon. The 85/150 (12-15) B motos were dominated by Brennen Weindel with Alec Wademan putting on a show finishing third overall after working his way up through the pack after a bad start. In the Senior B/C group David Hall and Mike Reynolds raced mid pack to put on some good action for the crowd. By the last lap, Hall had moved himself into eighth position in moto two, placing sixth overall, with Reynolds dropping back to the twelfth position. As the day rolled on, the noise and dust settled, and the results were in. The riders and spectators alike were treated to a great day of racing, and the third MDRA race of the season was in the books. I recommend you come out and enjoy the warmer weather and racing with the MDRA series, and I’ll see you at the next one for some live racing action.

Mid Atlantic Motocross Association Doublin Gap MX Park May 7-8, 2011 By: Jim Bull – MRA Finally, a weekend with no, or should I say just a little bit, of rain. The MAMA racers definitely had one of the nicest weekends yet this spring for their return to racing in Pennsylvania. It has been a few years since this series has raced in PA, but I believe it was a great return, and we hope to see them back again on the north side of the border again in the years to come. The weekend started off with sunny skies on Saturday and as usual offered a day of practice for all, along with five classes of racing. Foundation 529 was on hand to offer their services, and the Motocross for Christ group had their regular evening chapel services. Saturday evening brought a bit of rain just as the motos were ending, but not enough to dampen anyone’s activities. On Sunday morning, we all awoke to pleasant temperatures and sunny skies. Racing starts later at Doublin Gap, so everyone had a chance to get moving and get ready for the day. Foundation 529 awarded a pair of Arai helmets and a pair of Leatt Braces to riders they felt could benefit from better protective gear, then it was off to the races. The 80 A (12-15) group would be the first off the line to get the day started, where we saw a classic battle between Mark Hushon, a Doublin regular, and MAMA’s Sam Gale. The two were stuck like glue throughout the first moto, with Hushon taking the win. I missed the second moto, but it shows the two swapping positions with Gale talking the win. The racing was great in all classes, so please check the results here. The day offered five-foot trophies and factory contingencies from Kawasaki, Suzuki and Honda. There were product giveaways from sponsors like RNB Racing, One Industries, Pete’s Cycle and MX Solutions. Holeshot awards were awarded from Cycle Nano and Fly Bucks and Lucas Oil Points. We had a great time at this event and we look forward to the next time you’re back in our neck of the woods. Please check out pictures and video on our website at www.McRacingAction.com, and we’ll see you at the next one.

Having fun at the track.

NEOC Series Rd # 5 - The Coyote May 14-15, 2011 By: Tim Dennis and Noel Hartem

Well, I must say this was another fine weekend of racing. 750 riders came to indulge in another fine feast of off-road smorgasbord delectables. This was an allyou-could-eat buffet of well-aged terrain. South Jersey’s finest wine! It’s not very often you can say that a 9 + mile course was pure virgin trail. A huge thanks goes out to The Holly Ridge Group for allowing us to have this gift. We had just enough rain to help with

Jeremy Williams earns his first podium, finishing third O/A in the youth division.

p.m., almost forty oil injected racers were the first to breach the fresh trail and mark it for the next 700 riders. #642 Allen Adkins from the 4-6 OI class was top overall, with #89 Wayne Cox and #602 Freddy Cabegin of the 7-8 OI taking the next spots in the O/A. Fourth overall and second 4-6 OI #88 Chris Hemple came in just ahead of third-place 7-8 OI #601 Brenda Cabegin to close out the top 5 spot. At 3 p.m. the lines were full of raceready peewee riders. The first ones to the checkered flag were from the 4-8 50 class: #28 Michael Beeler and then #136 Colby Davis. They are from the third line back, which means they had to make up 3 minutes to win the overall against the 65s and Thumpers. Very amazing feat indeed. Third overall and first 7-9 65 #185 Johnny Manera came in just ahead of #76 Alex Thomas after a battle for position the whole race. #444 Colin McCollough was top Thumper at the end over #55 Tyler Massie. The 1012 EL class had an absolutely fierce battle for the top three positions the entire race, with the chips falling like this: #111 Gilliam Nardelli, #66 Alec Cileone, and then #51 Austin Raines. In the 4-9 EL we had #515 Hunter Keen take the win over #190 Kyle Lawton and third place #516 Mason Abrams, who held first for two laps. Sunday is our most wicked fast racers, and the AA Youth was the first to make us hold our breath and give us goose bumps. Coming to the flags as one bike, literally, was winner #2 Jeffery Hall and then #109 Schoolboy (Schoolgirl) 1st place, Thorn Devlin, with #906 Jeremy Williams

dust control, which is always way worse to have than mud. The course was a perfect mix of everything you love when you race. Tight woods, tabletops, whoops, open and fast, off camber with rolling elevation changes. Hard to believe you were in South Jeresy. Thirty-seven Tikes on Bikes took on a trail lined with briers, roots and vines which, means the parents went home with the scars, not the youngins’, lol. At 1

Having trouble with a deep rut

Pagoda’s Shell Kastle doing the harescramble thing.

Blitzing through a big water hole.

No mud, no water, and making up time.

PA State Hare Scramble Series Foot of Mountain May 15, 2011 By: JC Benson The morning began with a light rain as the racers rolled into Foot of the Mountain in Neelyton, PA, for Round # 4 of the PA State Hare Scramble Series. As the youth bike classes took to the course, the rain continued to fall, but as the laps clicked off, the track began to improve, and by the end of the youth classes the sun was breaking through the clouds. The adult class took off only to find an extremely slick area at the start, costing some their starting line advantage. As the adult bike classes rolled to a finish, additional slick areas and heavy rutting began to plague the course. The youth quad event was up next, and they had the deep ruts to deal with, but as the event progressed they smoothed out and could carry a lot more speed. Everyone managed the rough track well and appeared to have a great time. As the adult quads rolled to the starting line, the dark clouds returned to the course. The slick and muddy track became harder to manage as Mother Nature added extra moisture with a heavy downpour. The event ran well, and as Murphy’s Law would have it the sun reappeared at the end of the “Jim, would you please day. A thankadd a big thank you to the you to the Foot of the Mountain riders in your coverage staff for their for braving the weather hospitality and a and supporting our race great course. A special thanks to at Foot of the Mountain, the riders for and and please thank JC awesome event under adverse Benson for coming out conditions. Hebrews 11:1 Verse 1: NOW FAITH is the assurance (the confirmation, a title deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses]. Amp Jesus had faith; all the men of God in the Bible had faith. How about you? Faith is the thing needed to obtain Salvation. Salvation is not just Jesus saving you from Hell, but He is making available blessings for every area of life. Faith brings change. Look at this closely: [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses]. You see Jesus made your spirit new and that can affect your health, your financial or material provisions and everything in life. Faith - say I already have it even though I can’t yet see it. So, for example, I believe the racer who believes he already won the race has; now it’s just a matter of going through the motions. You know the one, when he shows up to the starting gate you can almost smell his confidence. He/she is

expecting to get the holeshot and pull away and get the checkered flag first. Back when I was a sixty rider I felt that way often. You can preserve life as a winner because you already are one.

Have you made Jesus the team manager/full-time trainer of you entire life? Have you taken the free Gift of God’s forgiveness by prayer. If you have, then you have what you need to conquer your biggest dream and/or your biggest problem. Begin today to have faith in Jesus’ finished work on the cross. Going into a jump you must have faith that your bike is going to hold together, so in the same way take a leap of faith in life, knowing Jesus is going to hold it together. R.I.C.H. Rest In Christ’s Hands J.O.E. Jesus Over Everything
