March 21st was the season opener at Trailways Speedway for both District 6 and District 7 dirttrack series. For most riders, the day was just the beginning of a long and competitive season. For Tyler Haas and his family, it was the beginning of a battle toward recovery and hope. Tyler is only 16 and lives in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania. He was running toward the front of the first 250B heat race when he slid out between turns three and four. His fall didn’t look much different than many of the crashes that happened before or after his. But as he twisted to get out from under the bike, another rider was unable to divert around him. Tyler and his bike were hit, sending pieces of plastic into the air and knocking Tyler out. Tyler was airlifted to Shock Trauma of Baltimore with multiple injuries while originally in a coma. He went in for surgery to set his back because of burst fractures to T-2, T-3, and T-4 vertebrae. They are the bones in your spinal column just above your chest. He also experienced a head injury, broken ribs, and a broken collarbone. He started on a ventilator before they added a trach into his windpipes. He was struggling with a fever for quite a while that they could not find the cause of. Tyler was transferred over to Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital to begin his therapy and road to recovery. He is now sitting up and able to eat while trying to speak. He has come a long way and is progressing every day. Jim and the Haas family would like to thank everyone for their support and prayers. Please keep Tyler in your thoughts and prayers. He needs our support in his long battle back to health. Gary Schaeffer and friends are putting together an event for Tyler. Here is what Gary had to say: “To All: Some friends of Jim’s and I are putting together a Tyler Haas Hope Ride on June 5, 2010. It will be a Poker Run that will start at Schaeffer’s Harley Davidson and end at Micheal B’s in Deer Lake, PA. Coordination has been mostly completed, and we expect to have advertising fliers published by next week. There will also be a mailing address for people who cannot make it and wish to make a donation to Tyler. Additionally, there will be a get-together at Micheal B’s after the ride, where we will raffle off door prizes, enjoy free hot dogs and hamburgers, and have a DJ spin tunes. Donations for people that did not ride will be $5 per person. People that rode will be admitted for free. This will be an over 21 event. There will be more details to follow, but if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.” More updates can be found at my website: www.RHDesigns95s.smugmug.com www.flattrack.com Jim’s Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/profile. php?v=photos&id=1266772685#!/profile.php?v=wall&id=1266772685

Marshall And Kessler Clean Up Expert Classes
450 A:
The winter of 2009-2010 in the Northeast will go down as one of the most severe in recent memory. So much so that the week before the season opener, there was still nearly a foot of snow on many portions of Raceway Park’s racetrack. Then when the area was deluged with a torrential rainstorm on the scheduled opening weekend, March 20th and 21st became the new opening weekend. The weekend also marked the the Northeast Area Qualifier for this summer’s amateur national championships. Sunny skies and warm temperatures greeted the racers, who were finally ready to get the season started. Racing would take place over the entire weekend, with the Area Qualifier classes schedule intermingled with some of the regular race day classes. Some of the best racing for the weekend would take place in the Expert classes. In Saturday’s 250 A Class, MCC/KPS-backed Dakota Kessler and Weinert Racing’s Robby Marshall would swap moto wins, with Kessler’s 2-1 bettering Marshall’s 1-2 for the overall. The Ocean County Powersports-sponsored Frankie Lettieri’s 4-3 motos would beat the other Weinert Racing-backed Kawasaki of Jay Weller’s 3-4 for third overall, and off-road

(3-4), and Ivo Camacho (6-5) rounding out the top 5. Sunday’s racing action was just as exciting, with Kessler and Marshall again the class of the field. In 450 A Pro Sport action, it was Kessler’s 1-1 motos besting the class, with Marshall (2-2), Bryan Wallace (4-3), Weller (3-4), and Lettieri (5-5) rounding out the top 5, while in the 250 A Pro Sport class it was Marshall’s turn to take the top spot. His (1-2) was better than Kessler’s (3-1), giving Marshall the overall. BARRY CARSTEN (31) CHASES DOWN MIKE TREADWELL. CARSTEN Lettieri (2-4), Sal WOULD GO ON AND MAKE THE PASS FOR THE VICTORY. Calamita (5-3) and Weller (4-5) racing star Wally Palmer’s 5-5 motos were good for fifth overall. In 450A class racing, rounded out the top 5. For more on upcoming Raceway Park Marshall would use convincing 1-1 motos to take the overall, with teammate Weller in events, check out their website at www. second (2-3), and Lettieri (4-2), Barry Carsten racewaypark.com.

President’s Corner D7 President’s Corner All seasons are in full swing. We’re rid of all of the bad weather and riding and racing is all that’s on our minds. All of the promoters are preparing their tracks for the riders’ pleasure. So everyone get out there and tear it up. Just a reminder that we have a new sponsor, Tucker Rocky. The rules and application are on our website at www.amadistrict7.com. This is a great program to reward your hard work and have your riding skills pay off. All you need to do is purchase pants, gloves, and a jersey, and you’ll eligible for $300 in merchandise at year’s end. This program is available for Dirt track, Enduro, Hare Scrambles, ATV HS, motocross, and ATV MX. This program can’t be beat. Please look up the program on the website and find out how you can reward your racing accomplishments. Remember when you’re out for the weekend racing, your next door neighbor is your best friend. They’re there for the same reason you are. We all come to the races for a good time. Everyone is willing to give a helping hand. I’ve said it many times before that we’re just one big happy family. When racing, there will always be some time that you’ll need some help. So giving a helping hand is just as important as receiving a helping hand. Last month I talked about how successful this area’s Dirt Track program is. This has all been accomplished by the helping hands that have touched so many riders. The families and local shops have lent a helping hand all the way through all of these riders’ careers. So when you can give a helping hand, please do. Last year, I asked all of the organizations to accept each other’s cards. There was limited response. This year at our last race, I observed some riders signing up. The riders were asked for their cards. They presented their AMA card and didn’t have a District 7 card. They were asked if they had any other card. They presented a District 13 card, which was fine. District 7 will accept any Recognized District Organization (RDO) card or any series that is sanctioned and abides by AMA rules and regulations. The next rider presented his AMA card and MDRA card. He was asked if he had any other card. He had a MAMA card, which was fine. MDRA is not AMA-
chartered or AMA-sanctioned. This was their choice. AMA didn’t refuse them a charter or sanction rights; they refused to accept the AMA rules and its creed. All district, Ultimate series, Masters, and MAMA cards are accepted by District 7. We all adhere to the “AMA mission to pursue, promote, and protect the interests of motorcyclists.” This is why we all have an AMA charter and sanctioning rights. District 7 will recognize all organizations’ cards that are AMA approved. This year our website has sign-ups online. Applications can be filled out online. You’ll need a credit card to pay through PayPal. PayPal will issue you a receipt that will be accepted at the track. Remember to fill in what class you would like a card in. The first class is $25. Each additional class is $5. Please add your classes and submit the total sum. All additional class monies go directly to year-end awards. Your $25 is broken down accordingly. Ten dollars goes toward the paper you’re reading (10 issues at $1/issue). Ten dollars goes directly to your primary class year-end awards. The last five dollars pays for the website, membership cards, postage, meeting hall rentals, and any other administrative expense.
MAMA President Corner It has been an exciting beginning to the 2010 season. We have raced at Budds Creek twice and Seaford once as I write this. Our next race is Tomahawk. The weather has been great for racing for a change. I want to thank our members for the excellent turnout and very competitive racing that we have experienced this season. We have had some great racing with riders competing for one of the largest cash purses on the East Coast for the 250 A and Open A as well as contingencies in virtually every class we run. We have implemented a new scoring system, which has worked flawlessly Another exciting benefit we are going to trial at Tomahawk is instant online scoring. This will allow people who have Internet access at home or at the track via an air card, BlackBerry, iPhone or similar device to go to mamamx.
com, click on race results/2010 and select live results. This will provide real time results for the race on the track! This is a trial, so let us know what you think. Remember to check out www.mamamx.com for upcoming events and contingencies. Don Logan President MAMA

2010 Middle Atlantic Motocross Assoc. (MAMA) Series Budds Creek MX Park, MD - Round 1: MAMA March 20-21, 2010
Articles - Photos By Matt Wozney/MXPTV
“Archer, Lane Dominate MAMA Opener at Budds Creek” The 250 A and Open A classes saw a solid group of racers at Budds Creek that included names such as Tony Archer, Gregg Duffy, Josh Stein, TJ Irvin, David Callihan, and 2009 MAMA 250 A/Open A champion Andy Benson. Archer came away as the top A rider with four dominating moto sweeps in both classes and even sweeping the 250 A class aboard a borrowed Honda CRF250! Smart starts and his impressive speed, thanks to his recent success as the top A racer in the Florida Winter Am Series, were key to his two overall wins. Gregg Duffy had great starts and battles with Archer early on each race, but Archer put the hammer down at the end of each moto to keep a safe distance. Virginia native David Callihan, who was always behind Archer and Duffy throughout the day, finished 2nd in 250A and 3rd in Open A. In Open A, Josh Stein was not far from Callihan to finish 4th overall, and Josh also finished 2nd in Collegeboy 1424 behind class winner Gregg Duffy. Andy Benson was 3rd in 250 A and 4th in Open A aboard a Yamaha YZ250 two-stroke after numerous battles with Pete’s Cycle/Kawasaki rider TJ Irvin, who finished 5th in Open A. Lots of riders showed some great results at Budds Creek with multiple moto and overall wins. The 250 B and Open B classes were dominated by Maryland’s Nick Lane, who is ready to go for 2010 and to make the trip to
Tony Archer was once again undefeated in all 250 A and Open A motos at Budds Creek.
Loretta Lynn’s. Lane’s wins didn’t come easy, as fellow Maryland native Brock Richardson finished 2nd every moto Lane was in. Lane and Richardson had the best battles of the day, as they battled back and forth and left the crowd clenching the nearest fence to check out the exciting racing action. Tyler Custer raced his Honda CRF250 to 3rd-place overall finishes in both B classes and bettered those results with a 2nd in the Schoolboy 14-16 4 Stroke class. Maryland’s Austin Simpson was another unstoppable rider at Budds Creek. Simpson won three overall wins in the Schoolboy 12-16, Schoolboy 14-16 4 Stroke, and Supermini 12-16 classes. Besides a 2ndplace finish in the first moto of Schoolboy 14-16 4 Stroke (won by Michael Reynolds), Simpson was perfect all weekend long with great rides out front, and that left him way out in front of everyone else. Simpson is fresh going into 2010 after spending the winter in Florida racing the Winter Am series and riding at numerous Florida tracks. Could this be Simpson’s standout year Tyler Custer rode his Honda to a second-place in the Supermini and Schoolboy finish in Schoolboy 14-16 4-Stroke and a pair of classes? thirds in 250 B and Open B.

the pack, getting past one rider after another. With two laps to go, she was able to catch the leader, which was Newbold, and both of them went back and forth for about a lap! Newbold always seems to be the rider who gives Brown a run for her money at the MAMA races, but at the checkers, Brown made it across and is now 26-0 going into 2010! Newbold was 2nd. Groves, who was racing a 125 for the 1st time, finished 3rd overall. Logan was 4th, and Maryland’s Mindy Tubbs rounded out the top 5. It may have been only a six-rider field, but the 80A 12-15 class proved to be some exciting racing, as this saw many of the top 85cc riders from the area battle it out. In moto one, RNB Racing/Race Shop’s Tyler Kirschner took the moto win with a very solid ride from start to finish. Diamond Motorsports rider Coty Schock was 2nd, Maryland’s Austin Toskov was 3rd, 2009 MAMA 80A 1215 champion Charles Wernig was 4th, and Blettner Powersports’ own Dylan Blettner was 5th. Moto two saw a big change in the results, as moto one winner Tyler Kirschner went down in the first turn and came back to finish 4th, giving him 3rd overall in the class. This left the Yamaha duo of Toskov and Schock to battle it out for the overall win, and in the end, Toskov crossed the line first with the win, giving him the overall win in 80A 12-15. Schock was 2nd overall with a 2-2 finish. Kirschner was 3rd, Wernig finished 4th, and Blettner rounded out the top 5 overall. In 60A, a stacked five rider field made the racing very fast at Budds Creek. Maryland’s Cameron Dowell put on a clean sweep of the
The Women’s class at MAMA is always a great race to see, as one of the country’s top female amateur racers, Amanda Brown, regularly competes in the MAMA races year in and year out. In 2009, Brown pulled off RC-like dominance in the Women’s classes, winning every moto on the season, going 24-0. Can she continue the streak at Budds Creek? In moto 1, Brown easily grabbed the moto win over 2nd-place rider Chelsea Newbold and 3rd-place rider Kara Groves. But in moto two, Brown didn’t get a good jump out of the gate and made a last-minute ditch effort into the first turn as Elizabeth Logan (4th in moto 1) led down the start straightaway. Brown flew into the inside and got close to Logan until Brown slid out in the slippery, hard pack inside. Brown went down and was left kickstarting her machine as the field was gone. Sandy Lane Enduro
Daytona 2010 ECEA East Coast Enduro Association 1010 Enduro Series By Wayne Sody
Green Bank, NJ - March 21, 2010 By Russ Brown - www.dirtriderphoto.com
73rd Running of the Sandy Lane Enduro! What a difference a week makes! Mother Nature smiled on the boys from the Meteor Motorcycle Club. After a cold winter and weeks of rain, the forcast was 73 degrees and sunny for the 73rd running of the Sandy Lane Enduro. The Sandy Lane Enduro, arguably the oldest enduro in the states, first ran in 1934 and was a total of 225 miles over two days. The only break in competition was during WWII when the event was postponed for the war. Sandy Lane was inspired by the “Jack Pine,” a two-day 500 mile National Championship Endurance Run. Riders piloted stripped-down versions of the day’s street bikes modified to be driven on sand roads and woods trails. Imagine stripping down your Harley and taking it for a ride in the trail! It was a time before offroad specific bikes and gear, with makeshift gear comprised of dungarees and garden gloves. Keytime was midnight, and Harry Staller won the event on a 74-cubic-inch 1200cc Harley Davidson. Fast forward 76 years. Keytime was 8 a.m., when the first racers hit the course that comprised of 70 miles of sugar sand, woods trails, and bar to bar tight single track. Andrew Delong took the overall, edging out Rich Lafferty on emergency points. Chase Compton finished third, two minutes back. Highpoint A went to Jamie Wright from Philadelphia, just three minutes off the pace. Rich Grate took High Point B honors, and Joe Winkler bested the C Class. Year after year, the Sandy Lane Enduro challenges beginners and seasoned vets alike. Additional info on Sandy Lane and the Meteor Motorcycle Club can be found at www.meteormc.com. For the complete

did the 1-1 in both the 25B and the 30+Vet B on the #5 Yam. That is some serious get-down; thanks for the show. I didn’t clock these guys against the open A, but every time I turned around they were there. But where is the Honda? Over in 30+ Vet C, Harmes, Bari Sr., Beck, Emery and Woodling, 1 through 5 all on Honda. Ladies, it was all Michelle Kastle with a 1-1, Turick with a 2-2, and Sparks with a 3-3. Over in Schoolboy, Daryn Thompson looked really good with a 1-1 win. Balkovic and Addison Emory IV put up a first and second. I can’t wait to see this battle as the year goes on. I was really enjoying the weather in the second half, and I thought about picking a rider of the day, based on their sportsmanship, but it was so hard. I know a lot of these riders and didn’t want to slight anyone. I thought it has to be a vet rider because at my age anyone over 30 who comes out and rides like this has to be
sighs. Yes, this is why I came, then I realized it was everyone, the whole package, the sport, and there can be no one rider of the day. Thanks for the show, and that’s the way I saw it. See ya at round 2.

Round 1 of the Mainline Series was brought to you by Pagoda MC and Sleepy Hollow MX Park. The event was sponsored by ECS Honda of Ephrata, PA, family-owned since 1968 (combine Honda and great people, and it’s easy to see why they have been in business for so long), and BRD, Bryant Racing Development of Rehrersburg (Exit 17 of 78). I got a chance to meet Greg and his team, a fairly new team, but he’s been around a long time and knows his way around a bike. Also, many thanks to Mike Cepress, his team and his work on the mic. Let’s get to it. Beautiful day, perfect track, over 300 bikes, and some great racing. Open A, Mr. Zimmerman with a 3-1 goes to 1st, with Kramer with a 2-3 in second, and Lunceford with a 1-4 in third, so it’s Suz, Kaw and Yam, and it’s close. In 250 A it was Lunceford with a 1-1, Vitulli with a 4-3 for 2nd, and Savidge with a 6-2 to squeaked by Peditto for a 3rd. Over in 250 B, it was the Jarek Balkovic aboard that Camp Hill Yam with a 1-2, followed by Kocotas on a Yam and Bari on yet another Yam. In the Open B, it was Bari with a 2-2, with Klaptosky and Kocotas. This is gonna get
my hero. For the first time, I saw some of the ages in the announcer’s report, and there are guys in there 50s. One is almost as old as I am, and I got to thinking; it’s not for the trophies, it’s for the sport, so if you get a chance, thank them. Then back to reality, “What the heck was that?” It’s Mr.T (that’s T for Terry, Savion Terry) flying by, checked out, in front and down, in another time zone. The same guy I saw on the wall watching the big bikes, studying and learning. But let’s wait till the day is over. For all of you who left early, you missed the race of the day.

Klopp had his hands full with Mester, while Winsett came from the penalty row to mix in the battle. The three stayed tight until Winsett went down in turn three with a lap to go. Klopp took second, followed by Mester, Jenkins, the #28 of Lowell Worley, #1s of Damian Kocovinos, and #73 of Scottie Mullen. Thirty-four riders battled for transfer spots
After months of snowy weather and racing withdraw, the sun was out and the skies were blue for the first race of the season at Trailways Speedway. The beautiful weather brought a large rider turnout and the surprise visit of our local hero “Jersey” Jake Johnson and Connecticut’s “King of Cool” Kenny Coolbeth. Work was done to the track during the off-season, adding a new surface and a little more banking. The banking should help corner speed, enabling the riders to carry a little more momentum. Turns one and two were pretty consistent, allowing the riders to throw the bike into the turn and hold on the gas with the rear-end swung around as they exited. Samantha Bergman pulled the Adult 100 class holeshot on the TSI Racing Suzuki over Joe Dragunas #6 and the #3 of Michael Sponsellor. Dragunas gave Bergman a run for her money during the first few laps before Bergman began to pull away to a comfortable lead. Bergman took home the win, Dragunas in second, and Sponsellor trailed in third. The season is off to a good start, and we are all looking forward to the races to come. Becca Zafia #16 tucked in close behind followed by Kevin Bills #13, Darren Phillips #3, Devon Gerhart #7b, and the #95 of Samantha Bergman. Phillips passed Bills in turn three and then gave up the position soon after in turn four. Zafia put the move on Smith to take the lead and win the race by two bike lengths. Bergman fought hard against Bills but couldn’t find the room to get around him. So Zafia took home the checkers followed by Smith, Bills, Bergman, and Phillips. Smith took home another second-place finish in the 250 Sportsman class. Roy Miller #56 pulled the holeshot and led the entire race to get a win on his blue-wheeled Suzuki. Jesse Long #16a pulled off a third followed the #86 of Rich Mellinger, #3 of Tyler Phillips, and the #71a of Tyler Stacey. Anthony Crabbe #38 got out in front of the OpenB class followed by Jason Cunningham #14x, Michael Sponsellor #29s, Kevin Bills #13, Steve Lerch #60, and #23 Jeremiah Tyerya. Donnie Mullen Sr. #71 brought home a third-place finish in front of recovered rider Cliff Diem #94. Collin Cunningham #29a pulled the holeshot in the 65cc class. Dalton Gauthier #14g was second off the line followed closely by Chris Thomas #49 and #66 Zach Kolsovsky. Gauthier and Cunningham were side-by-side going into turn one. The battle lasted until the last turn, where the two leaders went through lapped traffic. Both riders split around a bike and drag raced to the finish. Gauthier took home the win with Cunningham in second, followed by Thomas, Kolsovsky, #13 Brennan Beach, and #131 Christopher Leviness. Cameron Smith #15 pulled the holeshot in the 85cc 7-11 class over Gauthier. Smith checked out while Gauthier had his hands full with #4c Tristan Avery. Smith went on to take home the win followed by Gauthier, Avery, #67 Kenneth Kolsovsky, Cunningham, and #99 Kyle McGrane. In the 85cc 12-15 class it was Ryan Varnes #68 that jumped out in front. Dustin Healey #45 followed in second with #10 Ryan Dragunas, #7b Devon Gerhart, #21 Joey Juergens, and #97 Petey Colonell close behind. Varnes ran away with the win followed by Healey, Dragunas, Gerhart, Juergens, and Colonell. Dave Smith #77 rocketed off the line in the 500cc 2-Valve class. Six riders showed up for the Open Twin and Vintage class. Mark Myers #55 pulled the holeshot followed by the #30 of Jason Isennock. Isennock acted quickly and passed Myers to take the lead in turns one and two. After being passed, Myers had his hands full with Chapman. Isennock checked out to take home the win followed by Myers, Chapman, and #69t Thomas Valentine. Chris Kirkner #77 was sent to the back row in the 125 class after jumping the start. Colton Smith #41 took the lead on the restart

4th Annual San Jose Indoor And By Wayne Sody 2010 Daytona East Meets 2010 West Pro Shootout San Jose Pro Indoor Short Track 2010 San Jose, Cal. - March 26-27, 2010 By Ryan Hendersen - www.RHDesigns95s.smugmug.com
“Mees, Johnson, Lewis, and Bergman Take on the West” On March 23, four of us boarded a plane and headed out to San Jose, California. We left the dreary rain behind and headed for blue skies and perfect weather. Once a year, Rod Lake Racing and P&D Promotions host an indoor event consisting of tons of practice, tight racing, and then a Legends Banquet to honor those that have helped to keep the motorcycling sport alive. When we first arrived, the concrete surface of the track was shiny and slick. The first couple of laps looked as though the riders were trying to ride on ice with no studs or cold cutters, fishtailing all over the track. As the practices went on, more and more rubber was laid down, making lap times get faster and faster. One of the major highlights in Friday night’s event was the 150 class victory of Samantha Bergman on the #50+ Suzuki. As many of you may know, Samantha just happens to be my fiancé and the only female riding at San Jose. Coming out to this race has been a dream come true for our little race team; taking home the win just added to the fantasy. Before Sam had a chance to get out on the track, we had some hurdles to jump over. Mark Tsirigos, owner of TSI Racing, did everything possible to get us out to California with help from Rod Lake, Pete Francini, and Engine’s Only owner Frank Nye. Mark has been behind Sam since the beginning and currently supplies her with three of the nicest bikes at the track. A week before the race in San Jose, we found out that our bikes would not be making the trip to California due to a sudden issue. With little time, Mark packed up a motor, wheels, and other miscellaneous parts and shipped them out. On arrival, we found that an important package had been delivered to the wrong address, and we spent an entire day trying to retrieve it. Things became even more difficult when our motor didn’t show up the next morning, and practice was right around the corner. About an hour before practice, the FedEx guy showed up with our much-needed parts, and we were able to throw our motor and parts onto Frank Nye’s chassis. Fired up and ready to ride, we took Sam over to the

Perri brought home the win, followed by Bacosa, McDonnell, Delacy, Freeman, and Legarra. The last event of the evening before the banquet came down to the East vs. West Shootout. Four riders were chosen to represent the East and four for the West. Jake “Jersey” Johnson #5, “Jammin” Jared Mees #21, Johnny Lewis #10, and East Washington rider Joe Kopp #3 represented the East. Running the #1 was Brad Baker, #37 of Jimmy Wood, and the two Halbert brother on #5 and #69 representing the West. The riders drew for their starting positions and battled with each other through the heats. Each race, the riders looked like waves rolling in from all directions and crossing each other’s paths. They swapped positions several times a lap and then just turned and smiled at one another. Jared was able to claim the fame by taking the win away from the battle. Right after the awards were handed out, everyone lined up for the banquet and awaited the entertainment to come. The banquet went well, and we all had a good time honoring the past. The food was great, and we got to speak with Dale Lineaweaver for a while about some of his projects. It was a great finale after a long day of riding. Bright and early Saturday morning we got up and headed to the track for another day of fun before the trip home. Saturday was the event that everyone was looking forward to because of the pro class. One rider would be leaving the track with his head held high, holding the San Jose number one spot until next year comes around. Many fast competitors were fighting for that prize, including Mees, Kopp, Johnson, Lewis, both Halberts, Baker, Cose, Wood, and Stevie Bonsey. There are also some local riders with much talent from
of six restarts due to riders jumping the light and guys piling up in the turns. The final restart was single file with #80 Dante Dambruoso in front. While going through lapped traffic, Dambruoso lost the lead to semi winner #54 Dana Perri right before the finish line. The second semi didn’t seem as bad, with only a few restarts. Tony Alves #16y was able to get off the line first in the main event. Ken Gray #11x was able to get around Alves to take over the lead. Perri was charging hard and gaining ground on the two leaders before spinning out coming out of turn four. John Self #22y took over the third spot followed closely by #38 Chris Canepa. Alves was able to drive it underneath Gray coming out of turn four on the last lap to take home the win. Gray finished second followed by Self, Canepa, Dambruoso, Randy Freeman #53r, Scott Alves #8, Karl Kelzer #11, and Perri. The Vintage A class was a very interesting and action-packed race. Dana Perri had the pole next to the fastest qualifier, #96 Mike Besemer, who ran a time trial that was fast enough to put him ahead of half the pro riders in the pro class. Perri grabbed the holeshot with Besemer right on his tail before a red flag came out. On the restart, it was the #24s of Robert Silva who jumped out front. Besemer worked fast to get underneath of Silva, but slipped up coming into turn three, sending him straight into the fence. The crash tore the fence up pretty good, and it needed work before
the West coast. Mickey and Marty Fey, Mike Rush, and Kayl Kolkman added into the mix. The lineup was decided through time trials. Jared Mees was quickest around the track with a 7.21-second lap time. Kopp was second fastest with a 7.35 second lap time. Mees took home some money when he checked out and won the Dash for Cash. Shippensburg Speedway Opener
Daytona 2010
By Wayne Sody District 7 Dirttrack Gold Series/District 6 Dirttrack Series
Shippensburg, PA - April 11, 2010 By Ryan Hendersen - www.RHDesigns95s.smugmug.com
“Colton Smith Triples in the 125, 250B, and 250 Sportsman Classes” On a bright and sunny morning, we headed to Shippensburg Speedway for their first motorcycle dirttrack race of the year. Banking has been added to the track along with a new rich clay surface. The cones were pushed out, making the track a little bit longer and faster. The riders were easily able to lay down some rubber, and it took no time at all to form a nice blue groove. A couple of riders went down, and the ambulance crew had their hands full. Brandon Robinson #44 broke two ribs under his collarbone. He seems to be doing pretty well, even though he cracked his brand new helmet that he was wearing for the first time. Erin Kissinger #26a is doing pretty good, just has some bumps and bruises along with a sprained elbow and lower arm. Austin Greenland #32a is doing pretty good. He may have a slight chip on his hip, but everything else seems to be intact. Colton Smith was on fire, taking home the win in the three classes that he rode. Smith’s first win was in the 125 class. Cody Ebersol #17 pulled the holeshot and held the lead going into turn one. Smith was able to make the pass to take the lead before they exited turn two. Chris Kirkner #77 was third off the line, but ended up losing the position to Matt Trout #16a coming out of turn two. Trout got around Ebersol coming out of turn two on the second lap to take over the number two spot. Smith started losing ground to Trout but ended up with the win by a couple of bike lengths. Trout finished in second followed by Ebersol, Kirkner, Jeff Staniford #56, and Jeff Hughes #33. Smith returned to the track for the 250B class. He was able to get the jump, followed by Becca Zafia #16 and Samantha Bergman #95. Bergman was able to get inside of Zafia and take over second place coming of turn two. Bergman then set her sights on Smith. She was able to catch Smith and repeated tried to get by on the inside. Coming out of the last turn on the

last lap, Bergman was able to get alongside Smith and drag race him to the finish. Smith took home the win by a wheel, followed by Bergman, Zafia, Jason Nuss #26, Matt Trout #16a, Deron Gerhart #7b, Shain Bourassa #19, Anthony Crabbe #38, and then Ryan Heagy #13x. Colton Smith launched out front in the 250 Sportsman class on his Triple J Racing Kawasaki. Roy Miller #56 was in second on his blue wheeled Suzuki framer followed by Tyler Phillips #3, Richy Mellinger #86, Tyler Stacey #91, and then #48 Alan Acri. Miller had his hands full with both Phillips and Mellinger; they were close enough to throw a blanket over them. Mellinger ended up diving up Phillips to take over the third spot. Smith checked out. Then Stacey broke away from Samantha Bergman and almost passed Phillips before the finish. Smith took the win followed by Miller, Mellinger, Phillips, Stacey, and Bergman. Little Douglas Cook #78 had a good day, taking wins in both the 50cc Chain class and the 50cc 7-8 class. Damon Ream #17 pulled the holeshot in the 50cc Chain class over Cook, Racer Stacey #95, and Hayden
GREG LERCH (#71) PULLED AWAY TO WIN HIS HEAT RACE IN THE OPEN B CLASS ON DONNIE MULLEN’S BACKUP BIKE.
Edwards #26a. Cook got past Ream and pulled away. Ream was able to gain some ground on Cook by driving into the turns harder, but wasn’t able to reel him in. Cook took home the win followed by Ream, Stacey, and Edwards. Ream repeated the holeshot in the 50cc 7-8 class over Cook, Trevor Williams #25, Robert Wheatley #111, and Braden Winsett #11. Cook and Ream battled out front the entire race. Cook was able to win by a wheel over Ream, followed by Williams, Wheatley, and Winsett. Wheatley took home a win in the 50cc Shaft class. He got out front and ran away to win followed by Racer Stacey #95, Tyler Scott #70, and Matt Scibey #7. The Open A and Sportsman classes were full of action with the large turnout. Brandon Robinson #44 had the fastest Open A heat win. Mike Poe #83s had the second fastest heat win, Shawn Baer #32 the third, and Johnny Long #36a the fourth. The top three riders of each of their heats directly transferred into the main. A large group of riders went to the semis to battle it out and try to finish in the only two spots left open for the main. After the start, the pack was coming down the back straightaway when Austin Greenland #32a went down. Erin Kissinger #26a got hooked along with Dalton Winkler #35. The three riders went down, and Tyler Phillips #3 ended up falling on top of Kissinger. Greenland was flown from the track with possible hip injuries. Winkler got up and got his bike back together for the restart. Phillips had basically laid the bike down, so he was good to return. Kissinger was beaten and bruised, so she sat out and watched. After a brief period, the riders lined back up for the restart. Travis Diem #49a got out in front with Jake Shoemaker #55 right behind him. The two ended up making the main. Fourteen riders lined up for the main on three different rows. Poe was able to jump out front at the start with Robinson charging hard on the outside above him. Robinson slipped and laid the bike over coming out of turn two. Robinson slid in front of traffic and was hit by Tommy Majeski #3a. The raised was instantly
stopped because Robinson was knocked out. Either the fall or the hit from the other bike had gotten him in the head and split the back of his helmet. He attempted to stand but could not focus. He was transported to the hospital, and the race resumed. Poe pulled the holeshot again just in front of Baer, Jonathan Jordan #29, and Long. Chris Klinefelter #99s made a move past Long to take over the fourth spot. Majeski and Jason Isennock #30 followed Klinefelter past Long to take over fifth and sixth. Donnie Mullen #71 passed Long coming into turn three. Majeski then passed Jordan, leaving room for Isennock to capitalize as well to take fifth. Poe checked out for the win followed by Baer, Klinefelter, Isennock, Majeski, Shoemaker, Mullen, Long, and Nicholas Henderson #29s. Poe jumped out front in the Sportsman main before a pileup in turn one. Klinefelter got into the back of someone and went down. Henderson had nowhere to go and went over top Klinefelter. Long was in the same position and went over top of both the downed riders. The riders returned to the line for a restart. Poe pulled another holeshot and began to pull away. Isennock was in second with Joe Gathercole #75 on the outside. Baer was sitting in fourth with Perry Phillips #18 right behind him. Mullen pulled up along the side of his brother, Phillips, and they battled for a lap before Mullen took over fifth. He then went on to pass Baer in turn three, but Baer retaliated and took the position back coming out of four. Gathercole dropped to the back, moving everyone up a spot. Shoemaker was in fifth with Winkler underneath him. Henderson was behind them with national #72 Tim Eades underneath him. Mullen got past Baer and held the third spot. Poe went on to take home the win followed by Isennock, Mullen, Baer, Shoemaker, Winkler, Henderson, Eades, Long, Klinefelter, Phillips, and Gathercole. Dave Smith #77 was able to hold off Tom Majeski in the 40+ class for the win. Ray Jenkins #25 finished in third after a hardfought battle with #17s Mike Mester. Todd Kendig #28 held the fifth spot. District 7 flattrack rep Brett Friedel #3 repeatedly attempted to pass John Winsett #47a on the low side coming out of turn four. They ended up drag racing to the finish, and Winsett took the sixth spot. Mike Mester was able to pull ahead of Jim Chapman #72, Don Mullen Sr. #71, and Cliff Diem #94 in the 50+ class. Mester was able to pull ahead and take the win followed by Chapman, Mullen, and Diem. Heat winner Brandon Price #92 pulled the holeshot in the 65cc 7-11 class. Nathan Reichert #16 was able to get up next to Price, and the two rode side by side for over a lap. Colin Cunningham #29a sat in third right behind the leaders. Chris Thomas #49 was able to get past the #66 of Zach Kolsovsky. On the second lap, Cunningham went down in turn three. Trever Williams #25, Brennan Beach #13, Damon Ream #17, and Douglas Cook #78 battled against each
wheeled Amateur class. James Smith finished second on the #41, and Misti Kopp finished third on the #76. Chris Klinefelter #1 pulled away from Jim Chapman #73 in the Open Twins class. Klinefelter was sporting his new vibrant MSR gear for this year’s contingency program. He also carried the number one plate for his championship title last year in the district. Becca Zafia #16 jumped out front in the Open B class. She had her hands full with the #13 of Kevin Bills and #100 Matt Zacher. Mike Sponsellor #29s held the fourth spot with Albert Cook #22 all over him. Zafia was able to take home the win followed by Bills and Zacher. Sponsellor and Cook drag raced to the finish with neither one backing down. They both went down into the wall between turns three and four. While down, Anthony Crabbe #38 and Ronnie Mercer #98 couldn’t stop and ran into the downed bikes. Cameron Smith #15 took the lead in the kids 150 air-cooled class. Cameron checked out for the win followed by #41 Chase Smith and #13 Brennan Beach. Ryan Varnes #68 pulled out front in the 85cc 12-15 class. Dustin Healey #45 was second off the line and close behind Varnes. Devon Gerhart #7b was running in third ahead of Kalynn Mcafee #26k. Varnes beat Healey to the finish, Gerhart came in

2010 Middle Atlantic Motocross Assoc. Series Daytona 2010 By Wayne Sody Middleford Speedway, DE - April 11, 2010 By PJ Timberman - www.delmarvasportsphotography.com MAMA held its third race of the 2010 season at Middleford Speedway in Seaford, DE, the weekend of April 10-11th. Friday brought spring showers and washed the pollen out of the air, making a great start to the weekend. Saturday morning brought clear skies and lots of racing action. Senior Open and Support took the gate first with Brian Burma, #25, taking not only the first moto in the Open class but the second later on in the day. Mark Walker, #29, followed suit by taking both in the Support class. Josh Willin, #131, won the first moto in Collegeboy, while Michael Groves, #125, followed up a disappointing fourth place in the first race to take the win in the second, but giving Willin the overall win for the class. Willin also went on to take both wins on Sunday in Open B, giving him 3 out of 4 possible wins for the weekend. In the third race, the Women’s class of 11 riders hit the track with Amanda Brown, #293, dominating and taking both motos, with Chelsea Newbold, #129, taking second in both. In Super Senior Open, Mike Farmer, 17x, and Dean Bush, #423, battled it out and split wins, with Farmer taking the second moto and the overall first-place trophy. Nineteen riders lined up at the gate for the start of Super Senior Support, and Rich Hutchins #418 held off the field to take both wins. Schoolboy 12-16 was the last class to run for the day, and Tyler Kirshner, #244, took both races. Kirshner went on to win five out of his six races for the weekend, winning both in 80A 12-15 and finishing 2-1 in Supermini after losing the first moto to Coty Schock #19. With temps expected to hover in the low 70s, Sunday proved

D6 Ultimate MX Series Round 1
Daytona 2010 By Wayne Sody District 6 Ultimate MX Series
Pagoda MC, Birdsboro, PA - April 11, 2010 By Jim Mucklin - www.jimmucklinphotography.com
ULTIMATE MX SERIES MOTORCYCLES COME TO PAGODA Welcome to Round 1 of the Ultimate Series at Pagoda. I always enjoy going to Pagoda, and today was no exception. The track was perfect, the weather was the best day of the year. Let’s get to it. In the 250A, it was all Addison Kramer (Kaw) with a 1-1, smooth as silk, making it look easy ride that put him in first. I thought that Dan Bogdan (Yam) was going to catch him in the second race; he got close but spun out in the mid section. Gottshall (Yam) and Sebastian (Suz) are all right in there. In the open A, 10 bikes to the gate and it was all Ryan Zimmerman (Suz) for a 1-1. Kramer finished 2nd with a 3-2. Disciullo (Suz) running both class looked good. In the 250B it was two (Yam) up front. Joey Peters, checked out and was gone and goes in first place with a 1-1, and Kameron Page with a 2-2 put him right in second. Then the two (Kaws) of Tyler Conner and Paul Sanfelice Jr. If Peters and Page miss a beat, it’s going to be two green blurs. Speaking of (Kaw), I thought I saw Bobby Piazza, another Easton homeboy, out there. Looking good, Bobby. All the guys in this class were puttin’ it down. Thanks for the show. 250C is always a good show. Scicchitano (Suz) and Frey (Hon) start the series with first and second, but the #941(Yam) of Beck Calvyn looked strong with a 3-2, putting him in third. I didn’t count, but there were lots of C bikes. In the Open C, Scicchitano, Damiano and Frey take the steps; Calvyn is there in 4th. Speaking of Easton, my old hometown. Nothing says racing like the Stewart family, and Niki (Suz) Stewart shows just how it’s done and goes to first with a 1-1, and Shel Kastle with her master blaster holeshot goes
to second with a 2-2 in the women’s class. I know I sometimes miss the ladies, but I would like to say thanks to all seven that came to race. Thank you for coming to race, and with addresses like Maple Shade and Brick in NJ, Abingdon Md, Bensalem and Plymouth Meeting, it shows just how committed you and your families are to the sport. Back to the air show. Luke Palonicola (Kaw) aired it out with a 1-1 to put him in first. Luke will tell you this is what training does for you. Brendan Schulte (Ktm) out of Mount Airy, Md., who I haven’t met yet, put on a ride to give him a 3-2 and put him in second. Addison Emery IV (Suk), who always throws down a great ride, is in third with a 2-4. My two riders to watch are Arie (Yam) and Mikeeeeeee G (Ktm); they looked really strong. If you run in this pack, you’re fast. School Boy starts the season with Conner, Astudillo and Page. School Boy (12-16) Page, Pierce and Astudillo. This is going to get better as the year goes on with Palonicola, Trevelise, Addison Emery IV, and Niki Stewart in the game. I’ll see you at Round 4 at Sleepy Hollow. And that’s the way I saw it.
