Hello Race Fans!
Sleepy Hollow MX RD #2 - Ultimate MX — by Jim Bull. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 32
Happy spring everybody, I believe it has arrived. And it’s not like most years where it goes from 30 degrees to 80 in a matter of days. This spring season has brought us nice temps and finally the sunshine. The last few events have been just primo. The rider turnout has been phenomenal at some of our early events as well. Round # 2 of the Ultimate MX Championship Series saw just under 600 riders at Sleepy Hollow. The Dutchmen hosted Round # 2 of the PA State Hare Scramble Race and they had almost 500 riders, that is a fantastic number for Hare Scrambles. And the opening round of the new MDRA Race Series at Blue Diamond Park had close to 500 riders. If this is any indication of how the year is going to be, I recommend that everybody starts training hard, the competition will be unbelievable. I hope everybody is up to speed on all of the great opportunities you have this year in our area for competition. For you Hare Scramblers, the BP Promotions PA State Hare Scramble Series is going into its fifth year. That series is sponsored by MSR, Answer and Pro Taper and is the series to race if you are an off roader. Check them out at www.bppoints.com . For you motocrossers, your options are great. There are two new series in the region this year and depending on where you live it may determine where you participate. The new Ultimate MX Championship Series is also sponsored by MSR, Answer and Pro Taper. This series
runs partly in conjunction with the D6 Championship Points Series and will offer a ton of cash and contingency awards at the end of the year. You can find their schedule at www.ultimatemotocrosschampionship. com . If you live a little farther south you may want to check out the new Mason Dixon Riding Association (MDRA) Series. This series runs at 6 different tracks along the MD and PA border and offers great payouts to the experts with MDRA bucks going to the amateur and youth riders. Check them out at www.masondixonriding.com . All of the above mentioned series will pay out over $ 20,000.00 in cash and awards until the end of the year. If your gonna race, you may as well go where the goodies are. And as always, MRA will be your source to stay up to date on what’s happening around the region. So many times I run across racers looking for info on the internet, or they call and ask, “When does this race start”? For $ 11.00 a year you can subscribe to MRA and have all the information you need for a successful race season delivered right to your door 10 times a year. Clip the mailer in this issue or log onto www.mcracingaction.com and order your subscription today !! Until next time.

Brett Cox from Clayton, NJ is the first MRA / Kenda Holeshot Hotshot of the 2005 race season. We caught up with Brett the day before Easter at the Sleepy Hollow Mini Track where Brett was grabbing Holeshots and racing his heart out. Brett ended up with a second place finish on the day, but in talking with his father we found out that Brett has nailed the Holeshot in the last 12 out of 16 races he has competed in. Well, if that isn’t a hotshot than I don’t know what is. Brett congratulations on your finish and your ability to get those Holeshots. Watch out for Brett in the 50 class this year as well as the 65 7-9 division. Brett will be chasing the checkers and looking for those Holeshots while racing in the Ultimate MX Championship Series. And watch out, who knows, you just may be the next MRA Holeshot Hotshot. Jim Bull MRA
Wow !! How’s that for a list of sponsors and only his first race. MRA caught up with young Austin Herr at Sleepy Hollow while he was competing in his very first race. Austin had a great day at Sleepy Hollow, he was able to experience his first race and guess what? He had a great finish as well. Austin kept the bike up and raced to a 7th place finish on the day, but more importantly, when Austin came off the track and took his helmet off I had to use the wide angle lens to catch his huge smile. Austin’s parents were just as happy, their son was getting to live his dream and he was getting to do it with the help of a local shop and a bunch of great sponsors. Austin and his family are riding under the Off Road Motorsports banner for 2005. Off Road Motorsports in Myerstown, PA has formed an amateur race team this year and guess what? They are looking for people just like Austin and maybe you as well to sponsor for the current racing season. Check out their website at offroadmotorsports1. com or contact Greg Pamart, race team manager at (717) 866-5606 for all the details. Austin, thanks for the interview and we wish you a great first racing season. Jim Bull MRA

Danny Callahan sweeps the 250C class at Round # 1. The ATCO MX Park was the site for the opening round of the District 6 Motocross Championship Series. This series consists of 21 rounds and is divided among all D6 Tracks. Each facility gets two points dates a year with Miles Mountain MX being the odd man out and only receiving one race this season. Racers can compete for Factory Contingency money as well as D6 Bucks that are redeemable at participating tracks along with the bragging rights to see who the fastest racers in their respective classes in AMA District 6 really are. Several racers got a jump on the championship chase at the ATCO opener. In expert action, Bromley Suzuki’s Barry Carsten took home three class wins. Lebanon Valley Cycles Lowell Spangler also etched three wins in his belt to get the season moving and Joey Peters pulled off the Hat Trick in the mini ranks. There

14 Classes At The Mini Track
Pre-Easter Race • March 26, 2005 • Photos by MRA
Team B & B Yamaha KTM was out in full force for Sleepys opener.
Keeney Motosports Casey Clark takes home the goods in the 125A and 250A divisions.
Sleepy Hollow MX Parks, first race date of the year had to be cancelled due to inclement weather and very wet track conditions. Their Annual Pre – Easter race ended up being their season opener for 2005 and MRA was there. The Swarr’s are going into their third season as track owners and what an impact they have made. Sleepy continues to get better every year, their rider count continues to grow and I’m sure that 2005 will bring another year of great racing to Sleepy Hollow. In addition to their normal racing schedule, Sleepy has added two rounds of the Ultimate MX Championship Series. They have made some track changes to both of their tracks and moved some of the mini classes to the big track to offer them a more competitive environment. They have also limited ATV’s to youth only on the mini track allowing for longer motos and a more realistic motocross environment at the big track. The racing was fast and furious at their opening round with local favorite Casey
Clark sweeping the 125 and 250 expert divisions. In amateur action, youth racer Addison Kramer has moved up to the big bikes this year showing he has what it takes to win on the larger machines as well. Other multi class winners on the day included the likes of Nikolas Desiderio, Tyler Hawk and Greg “ Frenchie” Pamart. Sleepy also offers their near famous mini track. They offer classes for most off road bikes and it allows a great environment for the young enthusiast to get their feet wet. Classes are full of beginning motorcycle and quad racers who take their racing just as serious as the big guys. Turn out averages over 100 riders per event, so if you want to let your youngster get a taste of motocross competition while having a great day at the track, come on out to the Hollow. Check out photos from todays event at mcracingaction.com and for complete event results, check out sleepyhollowmotocross.com. Jim Bull, MRA
Austin Hay (859) battles with Petey Cusumano (10p) in 90cc quad action at the mini track.
125B Champ, Jack Hileman checks out the new double.
Keith Meshey from Mt. Joy, PA races in the 65cc 10-11 group.
Brennen Weidel (64) leads the 50 stock 7-8 division to the win on Sleepys big track.
Alexander Koslov (55) wins the 200 2 Stroke / 300 4 Stroke division.

After a full season of racing under our belts, we were able to sit back and evaluate our strong and weak points. Our goal was to make the weak strong and the strong stronger. By the end of last season we had almost completely changed the racing surface from rocky to almost total loam. That project will be complete this spring. We even made a
few changes to the track configuration, improving on something that was already good making it better. We made a few staffing and office changes to help the race program run more efficiently. A couple of brand new additions for this season are, supercross under the lights on Saturday nights, An all new peewee track for the 50cc riders, and even more level parking area. Probably one of the most important areas for any motocross rider is finance. We went the extra mile this season and found tons of great sponsors. This has enabled us to put together events that are truly second to none. From 125 C
race for free day, to four-foot trophy day, we are giving away thousands in cash and prizes. We are literally giving stuff away at every race. We think that is something you don’t see much of anymore and we want to bring it back. If that still isn’t enough, we put together weekends where a family can come, practice on both tracks Saturday, race Saturday night supercross, and race Sunday motocross. We also put together price packages to make it even more affordable. Don’t miss out! Miles Mountain is definitely worth the trip. For full event details and track information Log onto:www.milesmountainmx.com.
We would like to thank Jim Bull & Motorcycle Racing Action for their support. It has been very difficult to be recognized in District Six, and Jim and MRA have backed us through and through. We would also like to recognize our fine sponsors: CJ’S Motorsports, Glider City Powersports, Bobs Cycle Shop, Canyon Motorsports, Joe’s Sport Center, Binghamton Honda, Larry’s Sport Center, Addison Farm Supply, Scott USA, Spectro Oils, & E K Chain. Thank you for your continued support, Kevin Krueger, Mike & Phil Egleston
EVANSVILLE RACEWAY GETS NEW MANAGEMENT
District 7 Gold Series
Expert/Pro DA$H FOR CA$H
Good news for racers, effective immediately The Evansville Raceway in Berwick, PA is under new management. Steve Stracka and Mike Orpen have formed M & S Promotions and they will be promoting both Motocross and Supercross Racing for ATV’s and Bikes for the 2005 race season. In addition to a full race schedule, Evansville will offer open practice on Wednesday evenings and some Sundays when it doesn’t interfere with an event. The two are very excited about the racing potential at Evansville and encourage riders to check out their program. Evansville has a long racing history and with any racing facility or riding area for that matter we as riders need to support it so they can continue to operate and offer us quality and legal places to ride. Their website has been updated so you can check practice and event times there as well as being able to contact the promoters. Check it out at: www.evansvilleraceway.com

Blue Diamond park
Round #1 - MDRA Race Series • April 16-17, 2005 Blue Diamond Park was the site for the Mason Dixon Riding Associations first race of their new for 2005 - 12 round series. Close to 500 racers participated in the inaugural event and from what I can tell, this series is going to be hot. The MDRA is a new organization that has been formed by racers for racers. Their race series consists of 12 rounds being held at six different venues along the Mason Dixon border line. Over $ 20,000.00 in cash and contingencies will be given away this year with guaranteed payouts for 125 / 250 expert classes at each round. The day kicked off under bright sunny skies and the first class to the gate was the 25+ expert division. Long time pro racer, Jeff Grove led the charge as the gate dropped on the first ever MDRA event. Grove a local favorite had as good a chance as anyone to pull off the win but he would be denied on this day by another Jeff. Jeff Yentzer, one of the promoters of the MDRA Series mounted a charge from third place and by the end of the moto grabbed the checkers to take the win to kick off the series. Yentzer would have a great opening round, sweeping the 25+ A and 30+ A classes while going 2-1 to grab the overall in the 125A division just ahead of another young favorite Willy Toth, Jr. The racing was just as intense in the 250A division with Chris Welsh and Michael Foor swapping out the second and third spots in each moto with Welsh grabbing the overall. Toth a first year expert put together a first moto win but was riding under the weather on this day and had to settle for third overall with 5-1 finishes.
In amateur racing action, American Suzuki’s Chad Wages led the charge sweeping both the 125B and College Boy divisions. Wages would go unchallenged on the sandy 1.12 mile Blue Diamond Course. Zeke Zieman would take the win in the 250B division with Anthony Cascio, Jr. cleaning up in School Boy. The youth action was great as well. The MDRA has formed A, B and C divisions for the 50 thru 85cc divisions. The breakdown allows the riders to compete at their individual skill levels and offers the opportunity for all to do well. The racing was tremendous with one of the best motos of the day coming in the 50cc oil injected class. The A and B groups went off on the same gate with riders being scored separately. The (180) of Nicholas Carruba on a Cobra and the (33) of Dalton Blettner on the KTM. The two swapped leads several times and put the show of the day on for the crowd. The good news is they were both winners. Carruba crossed the line first grabbing the A class win with the B class win going to Blettner. Announcing for today’s event was provided by “Factory Jake” Ostrum. For more information on the Mason Dixon Riding Association log onto their website at www.masondixonriding.com. There’s still plenty of time left to get in on the racing action. To view over 500 photos from today’s event log onto www. mcracingaction.com. Well see you at Round # 2 in early May.

Devil’s Ridge • Sanford, N.C. Moto March Madness • March 6, 2005
March Madness means basketball unless you’re involved in Carolina motocross. Then it means opening day at Devil’s Ridge. After a mild winter and 220 loads of new dirt, 347 riders were treated to a great wide race track. The lion’s share of the pro purse went to Yamaha of Lumberton’s Jason Bryant. With consistent moto finishes he claimed both overalls.
After following Charlotte’s Blake Hovis across the finish line in moto 1 of 125 pro action, Bryant started the second moto with the hole shot. This time it was Hovis chasing, not leading as they started to set the pace. They were followed by Ridge Davis, Joshua Schmidt, and Aaron Stancil. By lap two, Bryant and Hovis, had already started to pull away. Right before the whoops, Stancil dove underneath Schmidt for fourth and quickly moved by Davis as well. Up front Hovis was wheel to wheel with Bryant, and in the last corner, slammed the leader to get the win. To his surprise, Bryant held strong for the win and overall. In 250 pro, Bryant had his way in both motos. Moto one holeshot winner, Davis led early but Doug Earls and Bryant wouldn’t let him go. Earls moved passed in the sweeper for the lead with Bryant in toe. On the next lap Bryant took the lead and never looked back. He took the win followed by Schmidt, Earls, Hovis, and Stancil. Moto two saw a Bryant holeshot followed by Schmidt, California’s John Simmons, Hovis, and Stancil. On lap three Hovis moved passed Stancil as Earls jumped by Schmidt on the back straight for second. The order would remain the same until the end with Bryant taking the win by over five seconds followed by Earls to secure his second overall. Simmons, from Menifee, California completely dominated College Boy action with double moto wins but not without a fight from Ryan Fitzwater. These two set such a good pace, that they were ten seconds ahead of the next rider. The battle for third was close between Kristopher Rabon, Christopher Smith, and William Howell. Howell would fall out of contention before the double - double section leaving Smith all alone in third. Rounding out the top five overall, was Zachery Pllocica and Tyler Shimminger. When the 50cc Oil injected class took
to the track the ruts and holes had to look like a mine field for these little guys. Moto one holeshot went to Tristan McMath of Siler City, but his lead was short lived as he would fall in the back section giving the lead to Corey Hall. Hall would continue smooth sailing while staying upright to take the moto win. He was followed by Chris Pickett, Addison Blackwell, McMath and a hard charging Lucas Hargrove. Moto two again saw a McMath holeshot only to lead about a half a lap before being passed by Blackwell. Hargrove had early troubles but was posting the fastest lap times as he tried to work his way back up to the front. He got as far as Corey Hall who matched him corner for corner. So it was Blackwell with the win and the overall, with Pickett, Hall, Hargrove, and McMath in toe. In 85cc 7 - 11 action, this was one on the highlight 80 classes of the day. Moto one saw Joseph Beam pull the holeshot and completely dominate as he pulled out over 10 seconds by lap three. Second place runner Nicholas Smith had his hands full as Nathan Lucas , Cohl Mason, and Zachary Newberry were battling for top five finishes. Newberry had just put a pass on Ricky T. of Lexington N.C., to move into the top five. He then set his sights on Mason, made the pass, and moved into fourth. This would stand as the finish order with Bean, Smith, Lucas, and Mason rounding out the top five. Moto two was a little tougher for Bean as he started in fifth watching Smith get the holeshot and start setting the pace. Lucas was all over Smith and wanting to lead himself. Bean was up to fourth when he made a pass on Newberry in the back section near the woods. He then set his sights on the Smith/Lucas duel. On lap three he passed Smith on the back straight, Lucas at the double - double section, and took the win with only seconds to spare. The remaining top five were the same as moto one as were the overalls. Racing isn’t only for kids as +35 and
+40 winner Scottie Shipley proved. With Vann Gibson consistently pulling holeshots, Shipley had to find smooth lines to make the passes. Two classes resulted in four Gibson holeshots, four Gibson leads, and four Shipley passes for the leads. Mark Williamson would stay close and also make
Fast Turn around Time
the passes on Gibson to secure second overall in +35. Williamson crashed out of contention in +40 after a second in moto one. This worked to Gibson’s advantage as he earned second overall. It was another great weekend and another great start to another racing season. The next race is the Granddaddy of Devil’s Ridge, the NC State Championship the weekend of April 1, 2, and 3. Sanford will also host the area qualifier race together with the State Championship Race. Hope to see you there. David Eller

Doublin gap MX Park
D6 Points • Round #1 Ultimate MX • April 3, 2005 Doublin Gap MX Park was your host for Round # 1 of the Ultimate MX Championship Series sponsored by Answer, MSR and Pro Taper. The race was also Round # 2 of the D6 Championship Points Series and was sponsored by Ephrata Cycle and Sport in Ephrata, Pa. The Ultimate MX Championship Series is one of the biggest new race series to hit the East Coast in years. The series is sponsored by Tucker Rocky Distributing, parent company to Answer, MSR and Pro Taper products. Some of the best tracks in the area have dates for this spectacular racing series. Racers have the opportunity to earn free gear or huge cash credits toward the purchase of the above products but you need to get registered for the series. There will be a nice cash purse for experts that compete as well. Contact Rossini Racing Products at 908-454-8800 for details on how to get registered for this great series. But don’t delay; I believe there is a time restriction to get signed up. Now to the racing, in expert racing action the man to beat at round one was RRP’s own, Damien Plotts. Plotts had the heat turned up on this cold blistery day and he went home with the wins in 125 and 250 expert and 25+ A action. In the amateur ranks, young Adam Blessing came to town
and showed everyone that he knows how to ride a big bike. Blessing won both 125 and 250B and the School Boy division as well. Other multi class winners on the day included the likes of Broc Schmelyun, Kameron Page and Dalton Blettner. You have to give the riders credit on this day, temps were very low with high winds and the area had been belted with two and a half inches of rain the day prior to the event. Hats off to the crew at Doublin Gap for getting their track in excellent racing condition. They canceled their practice day on Saturday to save the track for race day, and that’s exactly what happened. Kinsley construction provided the extra earth moving equipment and the rest was up to the Yentzers. If I was from out of town and you told that much rain had fallen, I wouldn’t have believed you. It was cold, but the track rocked. Check out event photos at mcracingaction.com and complete event results at doublingap.com. The clincher on this great day was the $ 25.00 gift Cards that ESC Cycle awarded to the racers that pulled the holeshots in each division in the first motos.
Mark Hushon (25) prepares to make a pass on David Byers (95) in the 50cc oil injected group.

blue diamond park RD #1 - Delmarva Series • March 20, 2005
Blue Diamond Park in New Castle Delaware hosted the first round of the 2005 Delmarva MX Series. Blue Diamond has made a few changes since the 2004 Delmarva Series was hosted in November of 2004. Alan DeCarlo and crew have added a few sand sections to the track that has enhanced the terrain and the riding experience. On the first level of the new tower a permanent concession stand is in operation to cater to the patrons. The bike wash section, next to the concrete starting pad was being utilized this Sunday. The Delmarva MX series is in its sophomore year of operations and continues to grow with the help of the 2005 sponsors, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Honda, Tucker Rocky, Fly, Pro-Action, Maryland Motocross.com, Twin Air, Scott, Empire Graphics, O’Neal. Parts Unlimited, Fox, MSR, Moose, Hinson, EVS, Holeshot Graphics and UNI Air Filters. The Delmarva MX Series is a nine race series with the two worst finishes overall being dropped to the year-end total. All racers entered in a minimum of six races will be eligible for a chance to win a Suzuki RMZ 250. Blue Diamond Park, Middleford Motocross and The Landings MX will host the series. The first round took place on Sunday March 20th under overcast skies and light rain. The record of 81 degrees in 1945 was not in the forecast, nor was the record low of 16 degrees in 1923. The temperatures ranged from early morning 41 degrees to a high of 46 degrees at 6:00 pm. The winds were SSE at 10 miles an hour, which subsided in the afternoon. Standout racers for the day included Suzuki pilots Joel “The Sweeper” Adams and Jesse Kuzbyt. The two young riders diced it up all day keeping the spectators wanting more. Adams placed 1st in the Schoolboy 1-2, 1st in the 80A with a 2-1 performance and a 2nd in the Supermini behind Kuzbyt 2-1. Race turnout was the best Blue Diamond Park has seen since opening day with several promoters in the area hosting events. The Veteran “C” and the 125 C classes filled the gate and provided for some of the most exciting starts for the day.

Happy Ramblers Season Opener April 10, 2005
Like many other tracks in the region, Happy Ramblers Season Opener was not the first date on their 2005 schedule. The rains have come this spring and hopefully have gone which meant warm temps and abundant sunshine for Happys first race of the year. In talking with many racers at the event, the wait was well worth it. The Happy Rambler Club Members have lengthened their course to just over a mile and have made significant changes to the design to make the track more user friendly while offering a challenging and new environment for the racers of our area. A few did not like the new design, but the majority of the riders I talked to were very pleased with it. New turns have been added to get the additional length; some of the old doubles are now missing with the addition of a new one in the middle of the infield. A whoop section was added coming into the finish line as well as a new table top jump. This is the first major redesign in five years and I believe it will prove fruitful to all who race there. The first moto of the day was the 25+ A division. Local favorite Jeff Grove was there as usual when the checkers fell to kick off the new season at Happy Ramblers.
Another well know face at Ramblers is the Senior A ride of Tim Schmelyun. Tim has been off the bike for a while but has come back in great form and is winning races like he always has. Todd Wilcom took the win in 250 expert racing action while Honda mount Derrick Wile grabbed the honors in 125A. Michael Reynolds was on fire taking home the victories in both the 125B and 250B amateur divisions. Another double class winner on the day was Steven Sparks; Sparks claimed the wins in the 65cc10-11 as well as the 85cc 7-11 groups. The action is always hot at Ramblers, with their new track design and their involvement in both the MDRA Race Series and the Ultimate MX Championship Series I recommend that if you aren’t a regular, you become one. You can check out photos from today’s event at mcracingaction. com and log onto happyramblers.com for complete results and an up to date race schedule.
Greg Lamey has perfect form over one of the new doubles on the re-worked track. Lamey would go on to win both the School Boy and the 125C Division two overalls.

Racers, I recommend contacting RRP at (908) 454-8800 to get all the details about getting registered for the Ultimate Series. If you’re serious about racing, this is the place in District 6 to compete. The Series runs partly in conjunction with the D6 Series, so do yourself a favor and check it out. The racing was intense at round two, check www.sleepyhollowmotocross.com for complete event results and if you’re looking for pictures, all the photo hounds were there. You can look up Thom Veety at Action Photos, motoxstation.com, wadeo-photo. com and Jim Mucklin Photography. It looks like racers aren’t the only ones running to check out the Ultimate.

Round # 2 of the Ultimate MX Championship Series paid a surprise visit to Sleepy Hollow as the event was originally scheduled for the Evansville Raceway. Apparently parts of the Evansville course were still under water from early spring rains so the promoters had to make the last minute change. Fortunately due to technology, word of the change spread fast and the racers were out in full force to race in the Ultimate Series. Close to 600 racers showed to compete on the Sleepy course to chase the points for the Ultimate MX Series sponsored by MSR, Pro Taper, Answer Racing and Rossini Racing Products. Talking to racers around the pits, they were very excited about the series. They love the door prizes that RRP was just giving away in the pits, the expert racers loved the extra pay outs and the amateurs are fired up about the end of year credits they can earn towards gear and merchandise. Hey, your gonna need to purchase new parts and gear anyhow.

Motorcycles & the Media By Al Carr/ Andy Fleck
www.reactive-suspension.com In today’s society the motorcycles image has improved somewhat in past years but it still needs work. I blame Hollywood for most of the negative image in the way they have portrayed motorcyclists over the past 50 odd years. The motorcycle was never a part of family life in the U.S. like it was in much of Europe. Americans have had access to cheap automobiles since the beginning of motoring but not so Europeans. It probably wasn’t until after World War II that inexpensive cars started to permeate a recovering society. Up until that point it was quite common for there to be at least one motorcycle in a family. When young men reached the magic driving age it was unlikely that they could afford any type of car new or used but a motorcycle was another story and as a result of this growing up with motorcycles they were never perceived as anything but transportation where as here they were always associated with hooligans. Most of the bad press can be traced back to the movie The Wild Ones with Marlon Brando, a very tame movie by todays standards but in its time it did much to portray motorcycle riders as always on the wrong side of the law. Fast forward to the sixties and all the Hells Angels movies, low budget crap yes but again they too painted a bad picture of motorcyclists. In the early westerns it was easy to spot the bad guys as they wore black hats. Later on and almost till today the bad guys rode motorcycles. Things have changed somewhat and more often than not the hero at some point in the movie hops on a bike. Lets see, Will Smith in I Robot gets around on a sweet MV Agusta as did Wesley Snipes in U.S. Marshall (I think) As a matter of fact the MV Agusta 750 pops up quite a lot in films which is weird as you never see one on the road anywhere as they are a bit rare. Ducatis are popular too, seen in the Matrix 2 as ridden by Carrie Ann Moss very cool. Lawrence Fishburne and Stephen Baldwin played fugitives and at some point ended up on a couple of Ducatis in a movie that I can’t remember the title. Who can forget Sylvester Stallone in Rambo running from the cops on the Yamaha XT, which incidentally sounded like a two stroke. What is with that? I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen a bike on TV and it has the wrong engine sound. Saw a commercial for an investment firm in which a guy sitting in an outdoor cafe is just about to overhear some investment advice when a motorcycle pulls up to the intersection and drowns it out. The bike was a chopped Honda 4 but it sounded like a V-Twin harley. I don’t get it. Why can’t they get it right? I’m beginning to think that they get it wrong on purpose because the number of times I’ve heard four strokes sound like two strokes and vice versa is wrong at least 90% of the time. Movies in which the motorcycle are an integral part are a bit rare especially good ones. Easy Rider is probably one of the best, but for every good one there are dozens of real crap ones. Does anyone remember a movie called Sidewinder? I’m guessing it was made back in the early to mid 70’s and what a joke it was. You know, who did they think their target audience was, motorcyclists? Please I watched this thing and spent the whole movie thinking what a load. There is a scene where our hero? needs a race bike so this guy shows him a garage full of bikes and says maybe you can build something from these. Well the garage was full of Yamaha DT’s so the guy gets to work and a couple of days later he’s built himself a Maico, good trick. Then to test the suspension he spends a couple of minutes wheelying the bike around a parking lot. Ugh! There was a not too bad movie called Timerider where a desert racer gets a little off track and accidentally rides through a military test site just as they are performing a test of some sort that inadvertently transports him back in time to the old west. I’ve only ever seen it the one time but I remember it being an OK film, at least the Honda XR sounded right. But when it comes to talking Motorcycle movies there really is only one, On Any Sunday. If you haven’t seen this film do yourself a favor and buy a copy. Yes its a bit dated but no other movie has had such a profound effect on me more than this one, I truly believe I’m doing what I am today because of this film. I first saw this film at a local motorcycle dealer, now out of business for over 20 years, Kawasaki City. They got a copy of the film, not videotape I don’t think that had been invented yet, and had a few showings during the week. I remember coming away from that bound and determined to mow every lawn in the Lehigh Valley if that’s what it would take to be able to afford my own bike. I’m curious how many dads have shown this movie to their kids and what kind of reaction there was to it. Are kids today too jaded by Freestyle MX and Extreme this and that to get it or is it as timeless as I like to believe. Image is an important thing, how we are perceived by the general public is important to the future of MX and motorcycling in general. I believe we have taken a bit of a step backward with the four strokes as the noise levels have risen again to levels that harken back to the 70’s. Noise is our greatest enemy because it is what impacts most on those people not involved with our sport. We need to keep a low profile and not offend those who do not share our passion and have it within there power to put a stop to it. Unfortunately many riders like to draw attention to themselves with a loud motorcycle and this isn’t confined just to the Dirt there are a lot of Harleys running around with straight pipes which is drawing the ire of a lot of people. I just heard that the township I used to live in will be clamping down on noisy motorcycles with some stiff fines. Don’t get me wrong I’m not for every bike sounding like a Gold Wing but there is a fine line between cool and annoying and just so you don’t think I’m picking on Harley riders these guys on Sport Bikes aren’t helping either. Every time I see one blow past me on the interstate going 100 plus or doing standies at high speed I begin to understand why there are so many people with a dim view of motorcycles. Well enough of that, hopefully next month I’ll have an idea for a tech article and can get off my soapbox so till then, I’ll see you at the races.
